Pasion 04/23/08: Three Men and a Baby or The Pardon Is In the Proof
[We begin with the final scene from the last episodio, and a darned good one! --ed.]
On his way from the palace, Sancti runs into Ric and they argue. Sancti says “So, they pardoned all your sins.” Ric looks at him. “—God pardons those when you finally face him. But if you’re referring to the amnesty, then yeah, that’s right.” “ --Evidently ruffians have more luck than decent folk,” Sanctiago sneers. Ric jumps off his horse and lets him have it about leaving a woman like Cami. “--So you think yourself decent folk? Have you ever once stopped to reflect back on your life? You had a marvelous woman whom you lost by chance. Instead of searching the world over for her very quickly you found consolation in her sister’s arms.”
Sancti tries to justify that. “I thought she was dead!” Ric hisses at him signaling to shut his trap. “As soon as you saw that wasn’t so, despite her being your sister-in-law, you tried to get her to become your lover.” ”—I was just trying to protect her from getting involved with you roping her in with a false name in order to turn her into your whore!” “—Don’t you call her that again!” The two end up fighting in the dirt like a couple of boys in a playground brawl. All that's missing is the nanny-nannie-boo-boo!
Sancti spits out at Ric, “It’s true! You made Camila change!” Ric screams back, “If you lost her it was because of cowardice—“ “--because you are the spawn of Hell!” Sancti yells and rolls on top, choking Ric. Ric then pulls his knife on Sancti who stops short. “-- I’ve put up with way too much from you, but now I’m fed up,” Ric threatens him. The knife is now only a hairsbreadth from Sancti’s throat. Ric rolls out from under and gets up on his feet. “Perhaps you’ve caused the death of our child and if so you don’t deserve to live.” “—Do it then,” Sancti dares him in a weak attempt to have Ric put him out of his mysery. “Do it so Camila hates you for the rest of your life for killing me.”
Ric (oh so artfully) puts away his knife. “—No, Santiago,” he answers with a righteous shake of his gloriously dark locks. “If you’ve killed our child you will be the one she abhors.” Righteous Ric then gets back onto his horse and looks over at Sanctiago. “One of these days you’re going to have to learn that when you let a woman like her go, you lose!” (What a class act!! Be still my heart!) Ric’s figurative aim with a knife has been just as deadly accurate as the real thing. Sancti, now hyperventilating from a combination of rage, frustration and self-hatred, has been seriously wounded with the truth. Ric rides away as his horse kicks sand at poor Sour Grapes Sanctiago’s sanctimonious backside.
At the same time El Chino, Mario, Pablo, Guerro and Jesus are all escorting their share of the money from the last raid and making their way back along the road to San Fernando. El Chino explains to Mario that while they were in Puerto Paraiso word of the amnesty from the Spanish Crown arrived and they eventually signed the papers. Afterwards, he says, the news reached them that the Camila had sunk so Chino left his encampment to get to La Iguana to find out if El Antillano had survived. Mario replies that he did but is now being held prisoner. Chino says considering the amnesty there is no reason he should be in prison. Pablo then asks Chino if he’d seen his mother and Chino says yes, and that she’s pretty worried about him.

Back in San Fernando at Cami’s former townhouse Lis is frantic, yelling to Fran that Ric is alive after all. Fran reminds her that she told her so but Lis isn’t in the mood. She tells Fran that Ric asked her about Pedro and she’s certain he suspects it’s his son. So, no matter what they’re high-tailing it out of there the very next morning.
Over at Justo’s Ric has just told Cami his plan to hand over to LaFont the incriminating letters in exchange for the baby. Cami is against it because she doesn’t want him to be sent to the gallows because of it, but Ric says he told her before that if he had to die then let it be for a good reason. The return of his son is as good a one as he could want. She says she shouldn’t have to choose between them and he should trust in the courts to get the baby back from Lis. Anyway, she doesn’t trust LaFont. Ric says he doesn’t believe in them even though she might.
At the prison the guards are marching the pirate prisoners to the rock quarry, beating them along the way with their whips just for grins. Mario is asking Pablo for the name of the colonel in charge but he doesn’t know. Just then they come to the top of the quarry. The pirates see them and yell up at them. Mario waves back and tries to signal for them to keep quiet.
Finally Mario arrives at the prison barracks and asks to speak with the colonel in charge but says he doesn't know the man's name. The soldier informs him that the colonel's name is Jose Maria de Valencia. Mario is visibly impactado to hear the colonel’s name. Inside his office the colonel is told a Sr. Mario is there representing Ricardo de Salamanca. He gripes to the captain and says he wonders what lie this one has concocted for him. Mario is taken before Col. De Valencia and realizes he was right. He knows him personally. “How are you, Jose Maria?” The colonel turns around at the sound of his voice and is shocked to see it is his brother. He sends the rest of his men away and Mario and he share a bit of strained small talk with each other.
Mario asks if he’s going to listen or hang him now even though there’s an amnesty in effect. Then he asks about their father and if he ever forgave him. Jose Maria chokes back tears and tells Mario their father died 5 year ago, but he had forgiven him. He puts his hand on Mario’s and Mario also fights back his tears and offers his hand to his brother as well. The two pull back from any further display of emotion and Jose Maria asks for the proof that incriminates LaFont and Mancera in the theft and sale of the crown’s stolen money.
Mario explains that he brought proof, but he will not give it to him until he sees Ric. Jose Maria says he escaped and Mario has a great chuckle at his brother’s expense. Jose Maria tells him that if he was in Puerto Paraiso then his amnesty is canceled. Mario denies knowing anything about Puerto Paraiso and then asks if he plans on arresting him. Jose Maria avoids answering and asks again for the documents he brought. Again Mario refuses until he sees Ric is alive and well. He says he’s leaving then and dares his brother to shoot him in the back for it. As he races out of the office Jose Maria yells after him and the guards start to grab for Mario. Jose Maria stops them and yells to Mario that it would be best for both he and Ric to hand it all over to him now, but Mario turns around and asks if he’s ever heard of something called loyalty and camaraderie. If he has then he should understand why that isn’t going to happen just yet. Then Mario races off as his brother yells uselessly for him to come back.

Sancti walks over to Justo’s after his dust up with Ric to tell him that his father has decided to give him back the concession for the store. They’ve overheard him tell Paco he was fighting and got dirty so Cami asks if it was with Ric and why. (Get real here, Cami. You have got to know the answer already. Is this an ego boost or what?) Sancti, exasperated with such a dumb question refuses to answer and leaves. Cami wonders with her father if the two despite irreconcilable differences might ever become friends.
Mario, El Chino, and company make their way towards San Fernando. They run into Ric on his way to San Benito prison and in a snit. Mario tells him that he did not hand over the letters yet since he’d escaped and Ric says to keep them safe for now. Mario tells him they’ve brought the money with them. He tells him to rent out the same house then they had leased before in San Fernando and rides off in a hurry.
Ric signals his men that he’s back as promised then goes in to the barracks to meet with Don Gaspar. He mentions he’s just had a fight with some fool and Gaspar laughs asking if the fool might actually have been Ric. Don Gaspar tells him that he’s found out what happened to his child. Antillano tells him about the deal he made with LaFont to hand over the letters in exchange for his son. Gaspar gets frustrated and tells him that with these letters he could get an additional pardon from the Crown for his participation at Puerto Paraiso, since the other crimes of piracy have already been pardoned. Ric explains that he’s not willing to risk LaFont warning Lis and the baby and her disappearing. Ric then tells Don Gaspar what he really wants is a pardon for his men who were only following his orders.
After Ric leaves Jose Maria has an afternoon sherry with Don Gaspar. He complains that if they let Ric trade out those papers for the baby they will be left empty-handed and unable to prosecute Lafont and Mancera. The archbishop suggests he should be patient long enough to let Ric work out a solution to the baby problem. Maybe if he searches the Mancera palace something will show up, some servant may decide to talk or something. The colonel says he’s got the permission to examine every corner of it and is certain that before Mancera agreed he probably had already destroyed anything compromising. Gaspar thinks something may still have been left unwittingly around there somewhere.
Gaspar then brings up the business with Ric’s men. He suggests the colonel let them sign the amnesty letter also. The colonel agrees, but as for Ric, Mancera’s daughter told him herself that Ric was seen at Puerto P. Gaspar says that maybe she might retract or say she was mistaken. Jose Maria says he wants to follow the letter of the law. The curate uses the kind of twisted logic only a consummate politician or diplomat could to suggest that if it took months for word of the amnesty to reach those parts that obviously the pirates wouldn’t have known they needed to stop their raiding. He adds that if he doesn’t have any proof they were actually at Puerto Paraiso, then by all means let the men go free and they’ll figure out something for Ric later.

In town Mario sees Jime walking in the plaza and they embrace all smiles and kisses. She goes over with him to say hi to El Chino and then tells Mario about the papers that Ascanio recovered dealing with the contraband. She says she’s not really sure what they’re all about since she can’t read. He gives them over to Chino to have a look at them. Ascanio arrives just then and asks Jime where she got his folio from and what gave her the right. She says that she took them from his room, but she only did it in order to free him from being responsible for having to accuse Manuela’s father directly. After all he took them in order to give Camila anyway, but now has cold feet because of Manuela. She’s not beholding to anybody and what’s done is done. So Chino scans them and recognizes that they are the falsified importation permits that Jorge told him he’d come up with and Ascanio confirms it’s all been done in Marcelino’s own handwriting.
Late that night Antillano arrives and tells Mario he’s decided to exchange the letters with LaFont for the baby. He doesn’t know for sure if it’s his child, but he needs to know. El Chino, who has just told Mario he’s got a wife and two children back in Japan, tells Antillano not to worry, that he can understand and he should go ahead with his plans. They do not tell him about the folio of falsified permits they got from Ascanio though. Ric goes to bed and Chino suggests that since LaFont cannot be trusted and since he’s a pirate captain of equal rank not beholding to Antillano, he’ll hand over the falsified permits himself to the authorities and if Antillano gets mad they can throw the blame on him. Mario thinks it over.
Across town that night Sancti has a heart to heart with Ofelia and says he regrets ever having let Ricardo live, but she says he should never regret any good action he’s taken. She tries to make him see that if he and Cami were meant to be then God wouldn’t have put so many obstacles in their way. She tells him that once and for all he should recognize this and resign himself to the fact. Since he’s young he’s certain to meet somebody else eventually. (Yeah, Sancti. I’d say you’ve just about hit rock bottom. Listen to Mom and get over it!)
The conversation turns to Jorge and Sancti tells his mother about Jorge’s agreeing to return the store concession to Justo. He tells her that he still cannot bring himself to turn his father in to the authorities. All the while he is subconsciously twisting Camila’s old green scarf in his hands and looking as pitiful as all get out.
Meanwhile Cami is crying to Vasco and Ines over how worried she is for Ric exchanging those letters for the baby. On the one hand she wants to get her child back but on the other hand Ric could end up on the gallows if he doesn’t hand over those papers to the authorities and save himself. Vasco tries to console her and tells her he’s certain Don Gaspar will intercede for Ric and things will turn out for the good.
The next day early Lis and Clotilde are leaving LaFont’s house with a single suitcase. Luis asks them if they are going away and Lis says that they are only taking a few things over to her aunt at the other house. She asks about Al and the servant tells her he is feeling better and has decided to put on his peg leg and go for a ride. The two women head over to the other house then and Lis orders Clotilde to hire a comfortable coach for their journey since it will be a long one.
Al is looking for his new peg leg when Luis advises him that Ric is looking to meet with him. Ric shows him the letters and they agree to meet up in an hour at the inn in town in order to make the exchange. Ric leaves and Al asks Luis where Lis is. Luis tells Al that Lis has left and that she was going to see her aunt.
Across town, the men load up the baggage and chests of money onto the hired coach.
Ric goes to Justo’s to see Cami and tells her they’ll have the child in an hour. She is worried but Antillano tells her he’s always trusted in his luck and he trusts in it now. Things will turn out just fine. He won’t allow them not to. They kiss.
Lis gives Candida her severance cash and tells her that she’s not to tell anything to anybody about her leaving or where they’re headed.
Mario and El Chino decide to wait a bit to see if Antillano returns soon, but if he doesn’t Chino says he will go to San Benito with the falsified permits and hand them over. Mario is on edge and doesn’t know what to do. He is really losing it.
The women get into the coach with Pedro and head out. Candida, now with her little bag full of her clothes makes ready to leave the premises just as Al arrives yelling at the gate for Lis or Fran and Clotilde to answer and open up. After Al flogs her across the face with his riding crop, Candida tells him that Lis and the others left for Veracruz and took the baby with them. Enraged, Al gallops after the coach in hopes of catching up to it with poor Luis frantically trying to run on foot behind with Al’s crutches.
Ric sees the commotion and asks Candida what’s happened. She explains. Ric races back to his hacienda and yells to Pablo for his horse. Mario runs out of the house. Ric tells Mario what’s just happened. They ride off together to catch up with Lis and the baby.
Ursula, her daughter and Fortunata have a little birthday breakfast in bed party for Sofia.
El Chino introduces himself to Jose Maria and to Gaspar with the falsified documents. He explains that the permits were false because they were signed in San Fernando and not in Veracruz. Gaspar is happy to hear this because he now can now get that additional pardon for Ric.
Meanwhile down in the palace basement somewhere, Jorge picks through the jewels in the treasure chest that was stolen from Ric. He comes to wish Sofia a happy birthday and gives her her present, the jewel necklace and earrings that he took from Ric’s chest. (Charming, huh?). He apologizes for not having been the husband she always had hoped for but tells her that basically he has always loved her. He seals this loving sentiment with a light kiss and Sofia melts.
La Paisana finally arrives from Coralina Island and hands Camila the little boy Ric adopted during the plague. Pablo is excited to have another child in the family to play with. Pasiana also hands over Foreman’s personal ledgers that he promised and sent for Antillano. She explains it has all the transactions between LaFont and Foreman dealing with the stolen silver he bought from Al and Jorge, specifically how much they sold and what he paid them for it and when.
The coach gets a head start. Al catches up to it and races alongside. (Man, one-eyed, a peg-leg, no depth perception and rotten balance, I’d half expected a guy like that to fall off somewhere along the way!) Al threatens to shoot the coachman if he doesn’t stop. Mario and Ric are racing behind Al and trying to keep him from shooting at the coach. The driver speeds ahead at Lis’s command. The women are frightened. Al shoots at the driver and wounds him in the arm. (Great shot, Al, considering the handicap! What are the odds?) The horses bolt dragging the coach with the women and baby inside at breakneck speed. Ric races his horse ahead and jumps on to the coach, taking the reins from the injured driver and eventually pulling the coach to a halt.
Al demands the baby but Lis refuses. He tells her pretty much never to darken his door again if she doesn't. (Not to worry, Al! I mean, gees, she's already packed her bags and headed out of town....) So he turns to Ric and demands the letters and Ric throws them at him. Al races off with them and I think throws them into some field on the side of the road then gallops away. Ric then turns to the women and demands the baby. Lis admits to buying the baby from Auxiliadora and explains how Fran bribed the woman. Just then Ric sees the necklace Lis is wearing and asks her who gave it to her. She answers it was from her husband on their wedding day. He knows it is part of the jewels stolen from him, but says nothing. Fran begs Ric to let them all go, otherwise they’ll end up in jail or Demon Seed Al will certainly kill them.
Ric agrees, turning his back on them and says they should go and that God might pardon them, cuz it’s plain as day from the look on his face that he’s never going to. He hugs the boy to him pointedly ignoring Liz while she screams and cries hysterically that she only took the boy because she knew its mother would just have gotten rid of him anyway, that he’s chosen the wrong woman and she’s the only woman who ever truly loved and cared about him. Fran finally manages to pull Lis off him and get her into the coach but Lis continues to scream at him through the window about her abiding love for him. Finally, mercifully, the coach pulls away, taking them along with Timoteo’s fortune into the sunset.
Mario asks Ric if he’s found him. Ric can hardly speak for the tears and emotion welling up inside him. (Passing around the box of Kleenex here.) El Antillano, totally overcome with tears of joy and relief gratefully looks to the heavens and says a prayer of thanks. He falls to his knees as exhaustion overtakes him and he marvels at his good fortune. He hugs Pedro and smiles at him. “You’re fine! Yes, you’re fine!” He turns to Mario laughing and smiling and nodding. ‘It’s him! It’s my son! My son!”

Thanks for the wonderful recap. I cried too when Ric held his child. That was so beautiful.
Lis cannot just ride off into the sunset. She is too wicked. Something has to happen. I will be sad if that is the sum total of her anvils.

Now I'm anxious to see Camila and her little boy together in the next episode. So Ric's dream about Camila and the baby is going to be true.
And Marg, you are not the only one who wants a happy ending for Conchita and Pablo but I think it is to late.

Great recap Jardinera!
I have seen Fernando in his earlier works but I could not see anything except an extremely good looking man.
I don't remember him in Alondra where his part was a secondary one.
I could not watch María la del Barrio and I don't remember him in Marimar.
I watched a little of Esmeralda and La Usurpadora but I left those novelas and yes, after a while I forgot about him.
Then when I found La fea más bella and Caray Caray I could not understand this kind of admiration.
And all this talk about Fer in LFMB?
I probably missed something.
Last summer I watched a lot of youtube clips of LMFB in spanish. I had already read the recaps in caray, I bought a spanish dictionary and used www.wordreference.com.
In August I had seen hundreds of clips and I tried to watch other telenovelas.
I started Dame Chocolate mostly because the dialogue was easy to understand. The Telemundo site had the videos, recaps in spanish and no subtitles. And there was a lot of product placement ads.
After Dame Cocolate I was looking for another novela. It was my spanish hour. I tried a lot of shows then one day I found Ric and Pasión and some wonderful spanish speaking audience.
And I understood.
Now I have seen the shorts versions of Amor Real, Abrázame my fuerte (a silly story IMO but with incredible actors) and Alborada.
After Pasión's end in Mexico I tried La Traición but it hasn't worked for me. Probably I'm going to watch the full version of Amor Real. On the other hand there is Las Tontas no van en Cielo with Jaime Camil.
And this is the Question:
Can I have FC and JC in the same package?

And a little comment for Sophia from Greece: It's not my favorite song but I agree that it's the appropriate.

I had to laugh at the end, two "pirates" sobbing and laughing and cooing over a baby. In real life, so unlikely. Heh. Jorge gets more and more adorable as death's scythe approaches.
Jardinera: My hat's off to you for your fabulous recap. And, thank you for all the other wonderful recaps you submitted for this telenovela.

Oh I was crying watching Ric fall to his knees holding his son grateful to have him in his arms. And Mario his best friend there holding him. Beautiful scene. Beautiful acting. Lis is so deluded. She really thinks her excuses for kidnapping Pedro from Camila causing her unspeakable pain in thinking their son was dead was going to fly with Ric. She's just as deluded as Sancti with his obsession over Camila. What an emotional rollercoaster ride. Don Gasper is working hard to get Ric that pardon. Ironic that if Ric hadn't taken part in the carnage because he owned Foreman he wouldn't have to worry about still going to the gallows. So the Colonel and Mario are brothers. I figured that much when he mentioned about black sheeps in the family. I hope Lis losing Ric isn't her only punishment. She needs to get back what she dished out with the pain she caused Camila. One more day to go before the grand finale and I'm dreading it. This is definitely the best novela I've watched in a long while.
Oh and Jardinera a fabulous recap as always. I appreciate all the time and energy you've put into it. It's much appreciated.
JARDINERA~~~YOU ROCK !!! Thank you for that great recap of an action and emotion-packed episode. While I was watching the show last night, I was thinking about the fun of reading the recap today and sharing our thoughts on the events that occurred...so much crammed into one hour. We all need heroes, and Ric is a hero. Not only does he look like a hero, he speaks and acts like a hero, strong in body and soul, compassionate, loyal, and protective. I enjoyed the replay of the rumble between Ric and Santi . Ric said all the things that I've wanted to say to Saintly. Go, Ric !!! Seeing Mario and Team Ric approach on horseback to save the day was magnificent and satisfying. Those who guessed that Jose Maria was Mario's longlost brother were spot on !!! And , the race for the baby was superb. Ric and Mario riding at breakneck speed with Crazy Al just ahead and ominously nearing the coach containing Ric Junior. Ric climbing onto the runaway coach and stopping it. Lis making one last attempt to feel Ric up as she professes her love for him. And Mario hugging Ric as Ric hugs his baby. Jorge presenting Sofia with stolen goods as a birthday gift was...interesting. I, too, am developing a soft spot for Jorge. I think he really does love Sofia , but I guess it's true that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. [Saintly certainly verifies that concept.] I suppose that Lafont is riding toward a bad ending , and it seems that the coach carrying the 3 harpies -Lis, Fran, and Clotilde - is headed for a deep ravine somewhere. [My only hope is that the poor, wounded driver escapes without further harm and retrieves the cofres of coins.] Thank you, Jardinera for your dedication to providing us with insightful, witty recaps EVERY WEEK. I always look forward to reading your descriptions and clever comments of the events we've seen. I hope that you will go along for our next adventure...Tres Hombres Shaking and Baking and Breaking Hearts.

Great recap! my only little quibble is that you short-changed the reunion between Jimena and Mario - I really love this couple, and their reunion was so sweet and passionate (and a little funny), that I was just melting.
This episode hit a lot of emotional high points - Ricardo's reunion with his son, holding the baby and crying; Ricardo assuring Camila that things would work out; the girls giving Sofia her birthday morning greeting; Sofia and Jorge's scene had me tearing up a little; and the fight between Santiago and Ricardo. All were SO well done!
And I've gotten quite fond of Don Gaspar - he's a man of the church, but he can still understand human frailty. And HOW MUCH do I love that they show some of the older actors, realistically, with sore feet - this last episode had Don Gaspar lying in bed with his shoes off, wiggling his toes, an earlier episode had La Paisana in the posada with El Chino washing her feet and then wiggling her bare toes.

This episode hit a lot of emotional high points - Ricardo's reunion with his son, holding the baby and crying; Ricardo assuring Camila that things would work out; the girls giving Sofia her birthday morning greeting; Sofia and Jorge's scene had me tearing up a little; and the fight between Santiago and Ricardo. All were SO well done!
And I've gotten quite fond of Don Gaspar - he's a man of the church, but he can still understand human frailty. And HOW MUCH do I love that they show some of the older actors, realistically, with sore feet - this last episode had Don Gaspar lying in bed with his shoes off, wiggling his toes, an earlier episode had La Paisana in the posada with El Chino washing her feet and then wiggling her bare toes.

And the moral of the story is : Ain't it good to have friends . Ric and Camila are lucky to have the help of so many loyal and devoted friends in their hour of need----Mario, El Chino, Ascanio o o , Jimena, Don Gaspar, Paisano, Pablo and the others, Ines, Vasco ...whereas Lafont is alone and twisting in the breeze with no one to turn to. The Beatles were so right... In the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make. What you send out into the world comes back to you. What goes around comes around.

Fantastic job Jardinera, Cuzzin Cash! You put in all the detail I so wanted to read again from last night.
It looks like the guys did a lot of their own stunt work. They were really going fast on those horses and I thought Buffy was going to fall off at some point. I sure hope there's more in store for evil Liz, Fran & Cliotilde.
It was great to see MMM Mario back in action and with Jimena. I like the way both of these characters have developed and grown into better people.
Carla has certainly designed the perfect hero in Ricardo. For me, he embodies all the qualities of true leadership and a good man. Only in the novela could one hombre be so perfect...

Yeah Mario's back! Woo Hoo!! Wonder if FINALLY he & Jimena will do the mattress mambo? Surely Carla Estrada wouldn't tease us viewers & leave us hanging on this storyline? Talk about cruel.
I'm wondering if Jorge knows either he's about to kick the bucket & just didn't tell Sofia or he's about to be arrested and that is why all of a sudden he is being decent to Sofia & Ursula. He's cleaning his consciense.
Can't wait to see Le Bouffy taken away in shackles. What are the odds Jorge points the finger at Le Bouffy and claims innocence. I'm guessing it will be in tonights episode when this anvil will drop. Wonder if Manuela will finally tell Daddy-O to take a short jump off a long cliff. Thank goodness she found a good man like Ascanio.
Since the pirates have been pardoned, I wonder if we will see Foreman ride into town & be with Ursula once & for all? Heck they are perfect for each other.
I think Conchita & Pablo would make a cute couple. Pablo is so sweet. Maybe they'll see each other & make googly eyes (lol).

Thank you Jardinera for all your work on this novella's recaps, they were always thorough ant witty and it was real pleasure to read them. And it was so fast!
I didn't catch the Santi - Ric confrontation in the previous episode ( my recording stopped exactly at 10 but it lasted few more minutes) so I was really enjoying this time, especially how Ric gave Santi what he really needed to have a long time ago.
The acting was superb! I love Ric's hissing gesture - saw it a few times. May be I should learn to do it.
And I agree with Mad Bess - it's all about friends, real friends, who never loose faith and always there for you.
Also I'm there with Todd on casting older actors in Mexico. I noticed this in LFMB and Destilando - so many older actors were involved. And in this novella as well. And older means not only older then 50 but 70-80. I think audience knows that their favorite actors always will be there and producers try not to break their expectations.
Remember - Jose Jose was in deep depression and he actually had risen back to real life after he was in the cast of LFMB. He even won an award ( even though I think it only was a token of appreciation of his previous career)

Ursula, her daughter and Fortunata have a little birthday breakfast in bed party for Sofia.
This was one of my favorite scenes in this episode. It was just sweet. It's pretty common in these novelas to have little sentimental scenes with supporting characters near the end of a novela so that we can enjoy them one last time. And in spite of all their flaws, it was nice to have the Mancera family happy and together. Of course it makes the anvil all the more poigiant too. I wonder if Jorge knows that the jig is up or if he really is ill and will have a fit or something and croak, avoiding his comeuppance.
The baby scene was wonderfully played. Is it just me or does that baby have a giant head?

After reading the translation of Ric's and Sanki's argument I think what is coming clear to me is Sanki has all this time been ignoring Camilla's feelings BECAUSE he wants to right his own wrong. In his mind, if I don't let go of her that wipes out the last time when I did give up. He looked like he was playing out a vow of 'till-death-do-us-part'. No luck with that plan Sanki.

I'm with you, Cap'n Bonney, on Whorehey's cheap-a$$ move. I mean, c'mon...picking through the stolen merchandise you have stashed in your basement is not exactly a gesture of love & affection. If Sofia knew, she'd be crushed at his callow declaration of love & then she'd smack him into next week for being so incredibly crass.

Luv his voice, his curls, and his attitude. BUT his last minute displays of affection toward Sophia and Ursula when he realizes the gig is up is quite transparent.
In re the necklace(s) from Ricardo's stolen treasure - he spotted the one Lisabeta was wearing, so now he's absolutely sure that LaFont & Co. (yes, he knew, but now he KNOWS) were the ones who stole it. Betcha he sees Sofia in her birthday present and is sure that Jorge was not only in on it but probably has at least some of it stashed someplace. There will be a reckoning!
I'm hoping Lisabeta goes someplace and, when she announces she is Senora LaFont, finds that he's wanted there (for various crimes) and she's going to pay the price.

Jorge's abused power, his friends are dying or falling away, and he's realizing they weren't really friends, just hangers-on.

About Little Rick's head...I think that it is a normal size. Remember a baby's head is large in portion to his/her body. By the way, remember that the newborn Baby Ric had a fullhead of very black hair . Do you think that Little Ricky's head was shaved??? The reason that I bring this up is because a few years ago, I had a student from Argentina. When she gave birth to her first child, she asked the nurses when they were going to shave her baby's head [because that is the custom in Argentina]. The nurses looked at her as if she were crazy, especially because her husband was an intern in that hospital. So, I wonder if the custom is the same in Mexico.

The leap or however it occurred from horse to coach was too fast for my eyes but IT WAS GREAT.
That was something!
On the other hand, that was something. Coach kept all its wheels, no doggie running ahead to clear the road of critters and no critters derailed the horses, depth perception and balance no problem, target shooting at a gallop hitting bulls eye! My kind of fantasy for the kid in me. Loved it! and didn't Ricardo look good stretched out on a full galloping horse?
Now I wonder how MMM Mario managed to stay just behindand beside him during the race. Those edits for time lapse indicating distance covered were a bit disconcerting, found them forcing me to blink. Interesting.

Loved Mario and Jim's joyous reunion. I agree with Cpt. Bonney Morgan, about the reasons why Santiago has held onto the dream of Camilla, the overwhelming guilt over that he did not search for her. The scene where Santo removed Camilla's scarf, I think this motion was indicative of him finally deciding to possibly accept loss regarding her- he'd never removed it in previous scenes before. Also, in final portion of the opening credits wedding scene, if you look at his outfit, he was not wearing the scarf anymore, but looked terrific.
Also, wanted to touch upon Ric's baby's hair...
Babies go through much transition with hair- they can be born with dark hair- then, it falls out (or often is rubbed off in patches) and is at gradual intervals replaced by heavier, thicker more mature hair down the road. Or, the baby can be very hairy and then the hair becomes thinned out... or, is born with red hair, then later is blonde. Also, someone may have curly locks, the hair changes over time and eventually grows in straight or vise versa. ect. This is often why someone has fine blonde hair as a child, but then it becomes thick, and they are dark haired as an adult. People born with thick, coarse hair often do not show such transitions as obviously, if much at all. This hair growth cycle of thinning, thickening and changes can often continue until around puberty, when a person's adult or mature hair has finally come in... (Speaking as an ex hairstylist here...) At first I thought Le Bouffant was shooting INTO the carriage, rather than at the driver, and I was horrified. If baby A.J. hadn't been in that coach, it would have been great if Lis, Fran, Cloti, and Al had all gone over some cliff in a freak accident--watch where you're going while I'm chasing you bi-yatches at breakneck speed--OOOPS!!! Especially since that's the way Le Bouffant got rid of GRita. Yeah, a 4-for-1 would have been awesome.
Ursula's hair. Yeah. Makes me think she's done one of two things. 1) gotten something big gift-wrapped at Rich's or Macy's, and liked the bow so much she saved it to wear on her head, or 2) she's been to DisneyWorld (Mickey Mouse ears).
The Ric/Sancti smackdown was awesome. I could have kissed them both for such a great scene. I'd pay money for those outtakes, the way they worked out the action between themselves, them cracking up at each other between takes. Priceless stuff.

After reading the translation of Ric's and Sanki's argument I think what is coming clear to me is Sanki has all this time been ignoring Camilla's feelings BECAUSE he wants to right his own wrong. In his mind, if I don't let go of her that wipes out the last time when I did give up. He looked like he was playing out a vow of 'till-death-do-us-part'. Yes, cpt. bonney. YES. That's been his problem all along. Because he let Cami down, he hates himself even more than he hates Ric, thus his ridiculously self-destructive actions to date.
As everyone's already said, Ric crying with A.J. in his arms was just SO worth the wait.

I'm satisfied with Liz punishment because she has paid with the 2 things that she valued most in this life. Now, she's headed for lands unknown and that has to be scarey. But that's the bed she made with her wicked ways. Yes, she did go out of her way to be mean to Cami, but if it were Cami the one seeking revenge then I'd say "go for it, give her a good cussin out and a good smack". But the Novela Gods take great pride in making the stars so likeable until they don't even have to fight their own battles. In other words, they are always the victim. They always have a loyal following who will gladly put the love birds happiness. So, hopefully if there is more punishment for Lis, it will come from the hands of someone she has wronged and a matter of our collective NRG wanting to protect bird brain Cami. PS: Despite my difference of opinion, I enjoyed the show as much as the rest of you.

I was thinking how it looks as tho Lis and Tia Frankenstein are being allowed to run loose in the world. On the basis of threat to society I don't think their threat is very high.
Al the Abuser of course is number preceeding one. The almost overlooked number one threat to their society is Auxi. She is a killer for hire.
I think what she did to Camilla was perferate her womb to set up an infection. She had a buyer for this baby but... Auxi never batted an eye or asked a question so this may not have been unique in her experience.
Even if that SanFer judge does not hold her accountable due to lack of testimony I believe the telenovela justice league will bring closure to her case.

Thanks so much, Jardinera, for the excellent recap! Ric sobbing with his baby in his arms was a high point. I also enjoyed seeing the scuffle between Ric and Santi again. I could hear Ric telling him the flat-out truth about his actions over and over again.

I've only watched the last couple of weeks (on purpose) but have checked in periodically on this blog line and am really touched by the cameraderie, the caring and the bonding that has taken place over this telenovela.
I don't remember it as being quite so tender with Destilando, and while we Fea watchers were fanatics, we were so annoyed by the extensions and the Aldoisms that by the end we just wanted it to stop.
Carla Estrada seems to have had the wisdom to keep it intense and compact, so that you yearn for more and yet welcome the satisfying conclusion for each of the beloved characters.
And wait breathlessly for the anvils to fall on yet a few more.
I feel quite wistful reading all these blogs...the same feeling I had at high school graduation...it will never be quite the same again.
I doubt that Fuego en la Sangre will grab you in the same way, but who knows? And I love the friendship you have for each other and these characters, come what may.

I groaned when Jorge went to shop at the Mancera Basement Bridal Collection. I realize there's no Zales in San Fernando, but it was still tacky. Valuable as those jewels may be, in terms of cost and effort on his part it's no different than if I pulled an extra pen out of a drawer and gave it to my Mom for her birthday.
I've been thinking about Lis and Fran and I'm not sure if I need any more closure on those two. Every known relative has either died or disowned them. They're a couple of helpless idiots who have to rely on gossip and lies in order to get help or pity from anyone. They really have nothing to look forward to.
But I can think of ONE thing that could make their lives a little tougher... an Alberto Jr. on the way.

I agree, JudyB, the reader mood on Destilando was a bit different - we seemed to have more trolls than usual, as well as people who wanted to blab spoilers and gossip. It made the comments area less fun sometimes.

Auxi, on the other hand, knows the dollar or peso value of a healthy newborn baby, and there's no way she would have let him come to harm...
On the third hand, whatever Auxi would have done with the baby, it's true that he would have been lost forever as far as the Darien and Salamanca families were concerned.

I would never want a woman like Lis to reproduce in real life. Nor a man like Alberto (granted Manuela turned out OK, but her mom was probably nice).

judyb~~~Hmmm...hmmmm...guys and gifts. Hub bought me the same earrings twice...twice [for occasions..2 identical pairs of earrings. So, now we have a system. We pick out a piece of jewelry together. Then, he wraps it up, buys a mushy card and some roses, and for my part, I act surprised. It works. But ,then , we do not have a big pirate treasure chest in the basement for hub to rummage through. The real embarrassment would be Sofia wearing her gifts and running into the woman from whom they were stolen. They looked pretty distinctive.

Lis had told Fran many times she was sure Camila and her family were going to give the baby away; that was how she justified taking him, so by "that woman" I am sure she meant Camila. Of course her real reason was to hurt Camila by taking away Ric's child as she hadn't been able to take Ric himself from Camila. Her hatred and jealousy of Camila is the identical bookend to Santiago's hatred and jealousy of Ric.
Marvelous, marvelous recap.

Unless the chase was speeded up, they were really at a breakneck pace and at one point, La Font looked like he was going to slide off his horse going around the bend. Seemed kind of dangerous to me and Ric had to stop the carriage as well.
Regarding the green scarf, in Mexico do they use the term green with envy (jealousy.) Seems appropriate to me that Santi always has himself wrapped up in it.

If I was Cami, I would have been curious about Santi's fight with Ric too, especially since Ric didn't say anything. They have a lot they could have fought about :-). I believe Cami said it would be absurd to think Ric and Santi could be friends and Justo said "No, never", so I think they were at least realistic about that.

Sofia's birthday breakfast in bed was very sweet. Are we seeing a kinder , improved Ursula so we'll accept her marrying the nice Coronel Jose Maria?

Bravo for Gaspar talking sense into Jose Maria about letting the prisoners go & the timing of the pardon, while having a brandy, or perhaps port or sherry from España. He is a good shepherd of his flock. Cute scene with him on the bed wiggling his tired toes -I can relate to that!
As to Ric - once again - perfection!
In tribute to these last 2 nights, I'm going to put butter on my popcorn as I watch the novela end.
That will help assuage my sorrow - I hope....
Loved seeing Mario & Jose Maria; especially loved that JM acted liked a loving brother, and not a rigid military man. I hope we see more reconciliation of the two in the next 2 hours.

Anonymous~~~I think that only Jorge suspects that Lafont is responsible for Rita's death. And, as far as I know, the gran final is just 1 hour. Gee, how will they fit in all the weddings that we are hoping will take place. Tonight, the villains will have to get theirs because on Friday we need to see all the happily ever afters. I'm expecting some anvils to fall on Lafont, Lis, and Al.

Thanks for all the many wonderful episodes you have recapped on this white-knuckle to heart warmed by tears fantasy ride of a show. I am glad you are going on to Fuego and wish I would be there too. But, Mexican Literature class, the art tour and my photos aren't ready, intensive Spanish week coming in May and so much else. I will be a faithful fan and commenter instead of recapper. It was a privilege to recap with you even if just for a while.
My bet is that Sofia wouldn't be surprised that Jorge shopped on eBasement. At least he also picked a lovely box to present the stunning necklace in. She was just so pleased that he even bothered since he didn't very often according to her words. His best present to her was admitting that she was ALWAYS SMARTER than he. I liked that confession even better than saying she was always the most important woman in his life (too many in the parade to pick from even if it were true). I really like Jorge with all his irony and dry wit. Perhaps they came in a package with the ED but perhaps they were always there which would have made for some laughter for Sofia who is my real heroine.
In this dusty NM spring, the intense cryng jacks I have started and stopped a half dozen times the last several nights make me feel clearer. Sweet babypie and Ric the hero of heroes scene is just the best. Two to go. Hope everyone enjoys them.

The final scenes were awesome--The thrilling chase to rescue the baby, Rick's cold farewell to Lis, with him showing a little regretful pain for their past relationship, and then the weeping, the smiling, the supportive hug from Mario.
I don't think Lis needs a baby, unless she dies in childbirth. I would like to see Mario and Jimena have a baby. That's when we'd see a tough guy go totally mushy.
BTW, one of my daughters was born with dark hair, which fell out after a month or so. Then she was bald, then blonde.

Oh, and my take on Lis' words were that she was still trying to trash Camila and get Ric even to the last minute in her delusional way. Her clinging to him until they pried her nasty little fingers off and shoved her into the coach was so creepy. Great acting all around. I loved how Ric further punished her by keeping his back turned to her. I hated how she sniffed him in the prior scene. She was really surprised to see him back from the dead.
There are really a lot of things to wind up in the two remaining episodes. Hang on to your hat! Wheeeeeee...

Yes, Cheryl..the sniffing. I guess because Lis is blind, she must use her other senses to experience Ric...thus the grasping and the sniffing. I was afraid that she was going to lick him. Oh, who am I kidding ??? Jardinera~~~I agree completely. That final scene of Ric clutching the baby and Mario clutching them both...superb. That's one of the aspects of telenovelas that I love...they aren't afraid to show real, raw, intense emotion. I'm really going to miss this show, but chin up and onward to ....the bakery. Sigh. I have a problem with closure...and I think the producer of this telenovela should be reading all of these comments and sitting down to write a sequel because there are just too many lose ends to tie and too many interesting ideas to ignore!
