Pasión de Gavilanes, Thurs., July 17, A Welcome Home goes wrong

Esperanza helps Don Filemón

Juan and a horse

the welcoming committee for Jimena

Grabi and Feonando crash the party

Abuelo is deprived of the opportunity to be the life of the party

Óscar's got a Mercedes convertible now. Very nice.

Super bad timing on the welcome home party for Jimena. We're not even going to ask yet again why these women feel they have to stay in their mother's house and take all that abuse when they could be with their cute guys.

Don Filemón didn't waste any time putting Hortensia behind him. I don't think I've ever seen anyone wear red eye shadow before. Miguel and Manolo need to set him straight.

So Belinda is trying to buy clothes for someone who is much taller. That can only mean one thing - Dínora's back from her vacation.

And now Malcom and Carmela are back. It doesn't seem possible but things are going to get worse at the Elizondo hacienda.

Hi Jean, I'm not watching this TN, but it seems that the story line parallels that of Fuego en la Sangre, the character's names all match, etc. I realize that they are both remakes of an old (Columbian?) TN, but seems to be a bit less campy. Have you seen both, and if so, give me your take on the similarites/differences? Thanks

Dorado Dave, this TN is much better than that Fuego stuff as is full of old actors trying to playing characters that are in their early to mid twenties. This is the original remake of the Colombian soap "Las Aguas Mansas" but a better version. You are missing a great soap!

Jean- Does this blog only mostly do recaps of Televisa soaps. The ones in Telemundo are more real. Is anyone watching "Sin senos"?

I thought it was bad enough with just Pepita, but now they have the Butt Girls coming to the hacienda? I couldn't believe it when I saw them at the party. How can they approve of this? And then they are appalled at the sight of Rosario. I just don't get those sisters.

I do agree, it is very frustrating that the girls won't live with their men. If I were Juan's fiance, I wouldn't let him out of my sight! And I bet Norma still stays even after Fernando slapped her so hard she fell to the floor. I would have been out of that house long ago, especially with a mother who whips her own daughter.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the new management. I was surprised to see those characters show up again!

Once again, nice pictures--keep them coming!

Hi Dave: I enjoy your comments on the FELS recaps. I read the recaps and I've watched about 5 minutes of FELS.
PdG was a hug success on Telemundo and Univisión is obviously trying to reproduce that. Hence the same basic casts mostly, but not all, with the same names. But PdG isn't campy at all. It shares some peculiarities with FELS, such as the lack of cell phones and the totally inexplicable desire of the sisters to stay with their mother.
It seems like if PdG did something, FELS has to overdo it. For example, the Gabriela's father, Martín on PdG and Augustín, I think, on FELS. On PdG, he had been a soldier and on special occasions, he likes to put on his old uniform. That's it. But on FELS it sounds like he has a regular comedy act of different costumes.

On PdG, Libia committed suicide; she wasn't murdered. The brothers did swear to get vengeance against the Elizondos but there was no thorns or blood or glowing flowers. And in more than 115 episodes, I don't think the brothers have ever been back to her grave.

The centerpiece of PdG, for me, anyway, is the wonderful relationship the brothers have with each other. Their different romances with the sisters are really well done too. And it doesn't hurt that Mario Cimarro who plays Juan is really hot. ;-)

Great photos, Jean. I was a horse fanatic as a young girl so the photo of Juan with that gorgeous new pale dapple horse feeds fantasies from both my youth and my not-so-youth. ;-)

When Juan was talking with Manolo & Miguel in that scene, I don’t know why he didn’t either confirm their suspicions about Esperanza or just tell them than they need to get home toute suite and see for themselves. Instead of telling them to get home & straighten out Don Filemón, he tells them to get back to work? To me that seems out of character for Juan. I guess they’ll find out soon enough. (Nah, this being a telenovela, scratch that. There could be some big time stumbling around in the dark first. We’ll see…)

I also like Oscar’s new Mercedes convertible. I think this vehicle actually sticks around for a while. ;-) I’m still anxious about Juan’s pickup, though. (I haven’t seen any further ahead than this episode, so I’m waiting like everyone else to see if it survived the tiroteo!)

I’m so disappointed to see Carmela & Malcolm again. I despise these two so much it’s almost physically painful to watch their scenes. With them now joining forces with Gabriela & Fern, and now with Dinora perched to reappear, things are going to get ugly again. Ughh…

Jean, you mentioned PdG has been about 115 episodes so far. At this point the YouTube episodes are at about 122-123, so it shows the degree of editing that’s been applied to the current version.

Howdy =)

Anonymous 10:45 - Caray, Caray! pretty much only does prime time Univision recaps (they are aired anywhere between one and six months after they air on Televisa), with a few exceptions like Zorro and La Traicion from Telemundo and I think one daytime TN that aired on Univision. Telemundo has the option for English subtitles (I think it's CC3), so there is no actual "need" for recaps. Discussions on the other hand, can be done with any channel I suppose. A bunch of us wanted to discuss LT and Melinama was kind enough to start a thread and Jean was kind enough to do the posts and then took on the insane task of recapping it as well (and we are all quite grateful). We did a thread for this one as well, but we don't recap, just chat. I caught the first three or four episodes of "Paraiso" and it is very well done, but too real for my taste.

Cindybin, I think the beef with Rosario has to do with her actions rather than her clothes. She has tried to steal Franco and then had the nerve to confront Sarita. Also Sara thinks Rosario is behind the attacks (I'm on the fence on that one). There is also the fact that, because of her, there have been 5 attempts on Franco's life through the equally unwelcome Armando. I do find faulty logic in having girls in pantless chaps at a welcome party for a girl. Bachelor party, yes; girl welcome home from hospital party, nope ;) Norma probably will stay after the slap. I realize that the girls want to protect their mother, but who's protecting them? They need to realize that mom has to learn this lesson all on her own, they just have to make her realize they will be there when she fails. As usual if they did, this would be a far shorter telenovela, so we just have to grin and bear it I suppose.

I laughed as Crabi and Fernie crashed the party, especially as the trumpet player punctuated with the old "wah, wah, wah" and then Martin blew his noisemaker once. It was humor in the face of unpleasantness.

Marie Celeste, I was also mortified to see Malcolm and Carmela back. The fact that neither of them were any good at running an hacienda (they were usually at the house and they drove the hacienda administrator away) and have a criminal record will mean nothing once he realizes they hate the Reyes boys! He will probably hire them so they can kiss his butt and join the Reyes hate-fest and between the three of them they will drive the hacienda to the ground.

Oh, Marie Celeste, I think Juan was trying to avoid being a chismoso with the fruit brothers. He did tell them that they would have to find out on their own about their pop's infidelities before he then told them to get back to work. You're right that it was out of character, but maybe it was just him getting uncomfortable and not knowing how to get out of the conversation. Tact is not his strong suit ;)

This is a little off topic, but fun. ;-)
Since poor Juan is so “dance challenged”, I thought I’d throw out a couple of YouTube clips that show how untrue that is of Mario “Shake Your Moneymaker” Cimarro. ;-)

1. From ‘Mas Que Amor, Frenesí” (“More Than Love, Frenzy”) (2001). Looks like fun, no? A cute scene that would be even better if that blonde & her partner stopped hogging the camera. The sound quality here is awful, so turn the volume all the way up on your computer:

2. From “El Cuerpo del Deseo” (“The Body of Desire”) (2005): I’d give about a year’s salary to trade places with Lorena Rojas in this one. ;-)

Thanks, Jean, (and anon 10:43). From your comments, it seems that the two are similar in the rough story line, and characters, but FELS is trying to out-do PdG. They are asking a lot of us at times, stretching the bounds of credibility sometimes adding sillyness. That's part of the attraction- that it's campy, and easy to mock, but fun along the way. I mostly watch to keep my ear tuned to spanish, as my hearing the word lags far behind my ability to express myself. So, thanks agin for your answer, and keep enjoying your soap...dd

Ok, one more fun video..

We know Mario can dance, but singing is apparently NOT one of his gifts. ;-) But how cute with the little girl!

Thanks for the awesome videos Marie Celeste. I almost didn't recognize Mario in Frenesi. Not only was his hair completely different, but he was a good 40 lbs lighter than in PdG. His accent was a lot thicker too (probably since everyone around him had one as well) but those eyes and that smile were classic Mario =) I didn't think his singing was bad (you wanna hear bad singing? Bobby from Guapos did entirely too much of it and it was downright painful), and he and the little girl had a great little moment there. Obviously he can handle children better once they've gotten a little older! The ECDD clip wasn't so much a showcase of his dancing as of the great chemistry he and Lorena Rojas had in that one. I would definitely have LOVED to trade places with her;)

I don't think that Friday's episode merits its own post.

Melissa successfully turns Leonidas into a nice guy and Malcom and Carmela get settled in and start doing evil things.

How long do we think Dominga will last at the Hacienda?

How will Fernando be able to explain away that Malcom and Carmela have a criminal record? Not exactly the kind of people you want running your hacienda.

Howdy ;)

Jean, I have no idea if Dominga will be the next to take refuge at the Reyes compound, but I wouldn't be surprised if she was.

Not only does Fernando have to explain the fact that his two latest hires have a criminal record, but once grandpa and Dominga bring her the chisme that Carmela wanted Dominga to leave little JD alone, she just might have a thing to say about that. Alas, from the previews it looks like no dice on getting rid of those two, but it will be interesting to see what they do. You know, besides having Malcolm try to shoot the Reyes bros!!!

Carmela has indeed declared herself a villain with that statement: She hates children!!!

I don't know if this part took place on Friday or will happen Monday, but check out Juan in the kitchen at Olegario's birthday party. Looks to me like this is another scene without Mario. While there are a few frontal shots of Juan with some dialogue, he looks almost computer-generated. Notice how stiff he is, as if he was literally cut out of another scene and pasted in here. Looks weird to me, but it could be just my imagination.

Ugh...We hear the annoying strains of "Amor Prohibido" once more, but under different circumstances this time. Let's hope it's the last time, for multiple reasons.

In addition to Malcolm and Carmela, this unknown shooter business is wearing on my nerves. Even though they were setting it up to look like Rosario could be behind it, my money is on Dinora.

Marie Celeste, I also noticed the stand-in. The wig was not as curly as Mario's actual hair. Yup, the "Amor Prohibido" performance was a little disturbing, but I'm glad that Melissa finally realized what a mess she was getting into and got herself out of it. After today's episode, we see that your Dinora theory was indeed correct.

Shame on Olegario! He's not even that good looking, and now it turns out he has a babe in every stable! Hope he gets caught. If Dominga takes refuge at the Reyes house, there will be no hiding things. I think she'd actually be a good "pareja" for one of the fruit boys. She's too pretty for Olegario. Quintina may well forgive him, but if she does, I hope she gives him hell first. She's no shrinking violet and will know how to keep him in line in the future.

That Gabi is taking the old "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" saying a little too close to heart. It will no doubt come to bite her in the butt. I figured the mere fact that Malcolm nearly decapitated Fernando would be a wake up call about the insanity of keeping those guys around, but it looks like she's too insane to see the truth. On the plus side, this means we still have many episodes to go.

Margarita,
I completely agree about Olegario. ¡Que descaro! I did like him, but he's lost some points with this little stunt. I had the same thought about Dominga and the Fruit Sons. Hopefully she'll see there's greener grass at the Reyes' place, and Quintina will teach Olegario a thing or two & he'll end up sorrier but wiser.

So we now have Dinora "2.0". Strangely enough, I like the new hair (more the cut than the color, but as a whole, I think it works.) Talk about "mala hierba nunca muere"; she's it. I hope the Reyes & Elizondo clans modify their behavior a little better in light of the fact it's clear someone is trying to murder Juan. Since the police are of no help at this point, it would be a good idea for both the Elizondos and the Reyes' to watch their backs a little closer. We'll see how they do.
