Guapos Thursday, August 07, 2008: The Castaways vs. the Castoffs

Damien is talking to Mono the protector in prison and is telling him that Macarena has changed, that it’s been years since Mono saw her. Mono reminds him that she has all the money he stole. Damien says it’s not her appearance, it’s that she leads a double life, hot mama by night, nun by day. Mono is impactado.

Mili and Alex are sitting on the island beach in the morning. They are sad that they have to go back and wish they could stay forever. Mili says it’s been the happiest time of her life. They kiss, then try to figure out what to say when they get back. Mili figures nobody will believe anything they make up, so they might as well tell the truth. Alex says let’s wait until we get back and take it from there. More smoochies.

In the hotel, Hugo is talking to Damien on the phone. Hugo says things are going badly and he expects they will be home as soon as possible. Flor walks up and asks if he’s heard about Mili and Alex yet. Hugo says it’s something else – Connie has been thrown in jail. Flor wants to know why and when Hugo doesn’t respond with anything definite, she pops off that she’s been up all night worrying and nothing he could say would be any worse. She whips out her cell and says she’s calling the DF to find out for herself. Hugo tells her to sit down and he tells her that Connie is being held for the murder of her father. Flor is impactada and the camera closes in on her rubbing her baby belly. Maybe she will miscarry?

Damien is visiting Connie in prison. He remarks that Connie looks better in prison garb than he does. Connie curses him and Damien says aw, he’s missed him at home. Connie growls just you wait until I get out. Damien says why so aggressive? You left me stuck here for three years! I’m here to see what I can do for you. Connie grabs him by the lapels and hangs on tight, demanding why Damien set him up. Rolling his eyes to indicate the guard, Damien tells him to let go or he’ll be in deeper trouble than he already is. Connie tells him to get out. Damien says okay, but you’re going to need some money in here, you know.

Damien mentions protection and Connie says Mono is a good guy. Damien says yeah but for how long if you don’t pay him? Connie is stuck and says give me some money and get out. Damien looks wounded and says you’ve hurt my feelings, you’ve been so aggressive with me. Connie demands money and Damien says the next time I visit, and he runs out.

Mili and Alex are lying in the sand, kissing sweetly and lovetalking. Mili remembers the first time she met him and we fade into the past. She is out on the street in her Carlitos outfit and Alex is taunting her and calling her a boy. She says she’s a woman and he grabs her and kisses her. She grabs him, acts like she’s going to kiss him back, but knees him.

Alex laughs and says he never thought he’d fall in love forever with Carlitos like he did. He wishes that he could pluck Hugo’s eyes out so that Hugo could never look at her with love like he (Al) is doing now. More sweet nothings and besitos.

In other sand, Morgan is buried up to his neck and Vale is laughing and romping around him. Hugo comes up and Vale says don’t be mad at Milagros, it’s all her (Vale’s) and Morgan’s fault. Hugo says never mind about that, Flor is packing and they’ve got to head back home. Vale says what will we tell Al and Mili when we see them? Hugo says you better pack too, your father is in prison.

In her hotel room, Flor is on the phone with Marisela and wants to know why Mari didn’t tell her anything. Mari says you told me you didn’t want to hear and I wanted you to enjoy your vacation. Flor has a meltdown and says I’m living in hell, Alex and Mili have been gone all night – together - and nobody knows where they are. Mari thinks Flor should just leave him, but Flor says she loves him. Mari says he’s a sorry excuse for a man, but what can you expect, raised by a drunk and a murderer?

Mari says Connie took our father’s life and now Alex is destroying yours. Flor says it’s all my fault papa got killed. I just had to marry Alex and our papa got mixed up with that family. Mari tells her to think of the baby and be calm and Flor says okay, and then, showing a glimmer of understanding that there are other people are on the planet and not just her, asks how Mari is doing.

Mari says she feels alone, and Mat seems to have disappeared into thin air.

Mat is sitting in a bar, looking a bit the worse for wear. Two suits walk up behind him and he recognizes their voices. He turns apprehensively and there is that Mafioso, Mari’s mama’s first husband whose name escapes me. The Mafioso is smiling. Mat tries to bolt, but the other suit grabs him. The Mafioso says you thought you could hide from me? Maybe they put a lojack on his motorcycle.

Mari answers her door and it’s Flor’s ex, Rigoberto! She gives him a cool reception. He asks to come in and says he saw in the papers about her papa, and he’s sorry. She says I doubt it. Rigoberto says we always got along, why the attitude? Mari says we got along until you betrayed my sister. How is Florencia? asks Rigo. And Mari says what’s it to you? Bobby comes up behind Rigo and says am I interrupting something?

Rigo wants to know if Bobby is a boyfriend, and she says no, just a friend. Bobby wants to know who the guy is, and Mari says Flor’s ex. The music says ta-DUM, but we already knew who he was.

Rigo says where is Flor, he has to talk to her. And sure enough, we see Flor. She is in the hotel lobby with Hugo, checking out. Vale and Morgan are there too. Morgan says maybe he should stay and wait for the others, but Vale says she needs him by her side. Hugo says to the porter let’s go and they’re about to walk off when in walk Mili and Alex. Now, that deserves a ta-DUM!

Vale steps right up to the plate and says she and Morgan were responsible for everything. Flor is livid and tells her to shut up so that they can talk to Mili and Alex. Vale says she and Morgan will wait outside and they scamper off.

Wow – Hugo has started blubbering. Flor is more proactive and she slaps Alex and tries to slap Mili who deflects her. Flor says you messed in with my husband and Mili says no, you messed in with the man I love. Yowza! Words fly. Hugo says Mili please come with me so we can talk. Flor says she’s not going anywhere until I’ve finished. Mili says you knew we weren’t brother and sister and you didn’t say anything. Alex is surprised and Mili says oh, yes, she knew that before she married you.

Back at Mari’s apartment, Mari is telling Rigo if he wants to see Flor, he can look at his wedding photos, she’s right there, before he betrayed her. Rigo says that’s why I need to talk to her, to clear something up. Mari says forget it, she’s married and expecting a baby, so leave her alone. Rigo tries to insist then says he’ll go (probably to Goggle her) but he wants to know if she’s happy. Both Mari and Bobby hesitate and finally Bobby says no she’s not. Looks like we have a replacement guy for Flor!

And we see the unhappy Flor – she’s on a lobby couch with Alex, telling him off. Don’t even start says Alex. You withheld information that was pivotal in my life, in my happiness. You knew when I married you that I didn’t love you, that I was trying to forget her. Flor says what do you expect? I’m not stupid. I love you, I wanted to marry you, have your children. Alex says you’re sick. That’s not love.

Flor says I thought you would forget her. I’m a grown woman, not a child like her. I wasn’t put on this planet to lose. Alex says you just now lost me. Flor says I’m going to take off with the child and you will never see us again. She leaves.

Things are going much differently with Mili and Hugo. She tearfully tells him he’s been an angel in her life and that he didn’t deserve this. She begs his forgiveness. She is sobbing so hard, she can barely get her words out. She tells Hugo that they were stuck on an island, no way to get home. All night? asks Hugo? Yes, says Mili. Now Hugo is having trouble ‘cause he’s crying too. He asks her to please tell if something happened between Alex and her.

Mili says she doesn’t want to lie to him. She says it was like the world stopped and she couldn’t think. Hugo is taking every word like a body blow. He asks her to stop. He runs off, Mili in pursuit.

Out by the pool, Vale and Morgan are asking Alex to forgive them. For what? says Alex, grinning. For the best night of my life? Into the scene barrels Hugo, yelling that he will kill him, and bowls him into the pool. Both are in the pool, struggling mightily and Morgan jumps in to try to separate them. Vale and Mili scream. We find out that Morgan can swim just fine without water wings.

Rigo is still leaving. He gives Mari his card to give to Flor, but Mari rips it up. Rigo leaves and Mari tells Bobby she won’t tell Flor as Flor has too much happening right now. Bobby holds the two parts of Rigo’s business card together and reads it – maybe this will be significant later? Mari leans against Bobby a little, but he pats her says he just stopped by to check in and he’s off now. Mari says Lina is lucky and Bobby says I’m the lucky one.

Mari wants to know… if Lina is pregnant, was Bobby with her when he and she were still together? Bobby says he’s not going to answer that. Mari tries to suggest he was cheating too but he says he got interested in Lina after he caught her with Mat. So now, says Bobby, you have your super boyfriend and I have my super girlfriend. Mari says she hasn’t heard from Mat. Bobby says don’t worry, bad news travels fast so he must be okay. He’s Super Mateo after all.

Speak of the devil! The thugs have Mat in a warehouse and he’s crying and saying he’s sorry. The Mafioso guy says I’m going to make it so you don’t escape again. Two sartorially correct thugs beat him up for a while until the Mafioso calls them off. He tells Mat that from now on he’s to do as he’s told and to quit thinking and keep his mouth shut. Mat grovels and swears he will. The Mafioso says Mat will marry Marisela and together he and Mat will manage her father’s company, and he is to represent Constancio Belmonte. I will, I will! swears Mat. The Mafioso squeezes his cheeks and reminds him of the fate of his little friend, then wipes Mat’s blood off his hand first on Mat’s sweater, then on a thug’s suit. He walks off and the thugs beat Mat up a little more.

Damien has appeared at the convent and asks the padre if he can get Sor Cachete. The padre is skeptical and says she doesn’t know much about gambling. Damien says not that – he learned a lot from her when he was there and he’d like to say hi. The padre says she’s taking clothes to the poor kids. Damien mumbles that it’s a pretext. The padre says what pretext?

Morgan and Vale are by Alex’s car out front of the hotel. She wonders if his nose is all right, and he says it’s okay, he’s used to his new family. Vale comments that it’s weird how here they are fighting like dogs and cats and meantime her father is in prison. She wonders if he regrets anything, and he says of course not. He comments that with her father in jail, maybe he’s safe for a while and she ruefully agrees that that’s true.

Mili walks up and sees that Flor is in the van waiting. She stands there looking grim, and Hugo walks by without talking to her. Alex walks up. Everyone is very unhappy and uncomfortable and Morgan makes a weak stab at a joke. Mili says to Hugo you and I should ride separately. He sarcastically asks if she’s talking to Alex. She says they need to talk, but Hugo says you’ll be talking alone because I don’t want to listen.

He announces that Constancio is in jail for murdering Domingo. Alex and Mili are shocked. Hugo very roughly shoves Vale and Morgan out of the way and gets in the van. Vale takes Alex’s hand and says we’re with you. Hugo orders Mili into the van. Everyone gets in and you could cut the frosty atmosphere with a knife. On the road, Morgan tries to lift the mood by babbling on, but they all tell him to stop.

Flor has a spasm and grabs her stomach. Alex asks if she’s okay. She says what do you care? Poor kid is going to be born into this family – I wish I’d never met you. She rants on, ending up with calling Connie a murderer. Fun family road trip! She has another spasm.

In prison, Connie is telling Mono that he’ll have some money next week. Mono says look, I like you, but no money, no protection. Connie says you know you can trust me – when I get out I’ll make it right. Mono says we’re not in your office and I’m not one of your underlings you order around, so don’t raise your voice to me. Here you are nothing. Connie backs off and tries to make light of what he said. Mono says if he doesn’t get money by tonight, Connie’s going to have to learn a lesson. He gives Connie a little shove for emphasis.

In the car, Flor seems to be having spasms and when Vale asks if she’s okay, she tells her to shut up. Oops – something’s wrong with the car, maybe a flat. Alex pulls over.

Andrea is visiting Connie in prison. He tells her to stop rattling on about the household gossip and give him the money he asked for. She hands him an envelope and he says where’s the rest? She says she stopped by a shoe store on the way. She says she will bring his checkbook tomorrow, but he says he’s not out in the world, is she nuts? She says well never mind, and don’t yell. He remembers a signed check he left in his desk and tells her to cash it and bring him the money without stopping by the shops on the way. She doesn’t look enthusiastic and he orders her to do it.

Alex is changing the tire and everyone is out of the car except Flor. Hugo and Mili are standing in front of the car, not a good spot as Hugo has tears running down his face. He tells Mili that he will pretend nothing happened with Alex, but she cannot expect that he will continue to be the white dove in her life. He says I gave you every opportunity to go to Alex before we married – I begged you to go to him, and what did you say? You said you wanted to be my wife. Mili remembers she also said “don’t ever let me leave.” You betrayed me, I want to hate you, but I can’t. He is bawling and so is Mili.

Mili begs forgiveness and says she never wanted to hurt him, but she begs understanding too. She says her love for Alex is so huge she can’t control it. She says please let’s get divorced. Hugo says that’s never going to happen. He sees Alex is looking.

Tire changing hijinks with Morgan and Vale to let a little novela time pass.

Flor says to Hugo I saw you two arguing. Did you tell her you slept with someone else? Hugo throws his hands up. Flor says all you men are pigs. Spasm!

Damien has four hot babes lined up in the office foyer and is telling them the requirements for the position of his secretary. They seem to understand the requirements very well, as they have on short skirts and low-cut tops and are vamping for him. Luci (without makeup) comes in and calls him a thief and demands her money. She tells the applicants that he’s a scoundrel. Damien hauls her into Connie’s office.

Back at the road trip, everyone is very cranky. The tire, which rolled away during the hijinks, has been recovered, Hugo gripes, and is reminded that he hasn’t helped. Mili is looking at Flor and says even though you’re insulting me, I can tell you look like you don’t feel well. Flor says she needs to get out and walk a bit. She gets out and grabs her belly. Her water has broken!

Avances: beat-up Mateo is telling his grandfather about what the Mafioso wants him to do, and that the Mafioso was behind the death of Mari’s dad. Flor is giving birth in the back of the car, with Alex and Mili as labor coaches.

Great recap for this climactic episode. The sad news is that last night I saw the "Ultimas Semanas" promo for the first time. Did anyone see it earlier in the week?
How long do you think that gives us? I am already feeling withdrawal symptoms.

Could you believe all six of those people were riding in the car together? That was pretty funny.

Mat really looked terrified of the gangsters, but now we know why they want him around. The avances showed him telling the truth to his grandfather, so Sr. Robledo may save the day.

The writers sent Val and Rocky out of the lobby while the other four had their discussion, so Val is cleverly still kept out of the loop on the Mili parentage secret.

Wow! What an episode...and your title was excellent Maggie...you know how I admire your skill at that.

Thought the actor playing Hugo did an excellent job during the Mili/Hugo scene. Your "body blows" description did it justice. I actually hurt viscerally watching that.

We had a major discussion on "forgiveness" "reconciliation" and "forgetting" on the Querida blog line yesterday but I'm going to take an opposite tack here and say I'm outraged that Mili could shriek "Perdoname, perdoname" immediately after betraying her wedding vows...as if she should get an instant "get out of jail" pass so she won't feel bad.

Forgiving that kind of hurt (we'll put aside for the moment the meaningless sex couplings with Nefertiti...that Mili doesn't know about anyway)....so, as I was saying, forgiving that kind of hurt takes time...much much time. And the forgiveness would be for Hugo's sake, not so Mili could feel okay about what she did...like it didn't count.

If this were real life and I actually knew Hugo, I would hope that one day he would forgive so he would not be mired in bitterness and cynicism about love. But it would not be for Mili's sake, but only for his.

And don't get me wrong. I like the Mili character, and as a hopeless romantic, I'm delighted that eventually things will work out between her and the oh-so-buff Alejandro.

But again, to wail "perdoname, perdoname" like forgiveness and healing should be instantanous just pushes ALL my buttons.

Whew, feel better after THAT rant.
Happy weekend all!

oh...and since this is about learning Spanish, it was fun to learn how to say "my water broke". Not that this is going to be coming up for me anytime soon!

Yes, but it will be for Stacey, ha ha. We can ask our Spanish tutor.

You know I had the feeling that Mili was asking forgiveness for having married Hugo in the first place, and not for what she did with Alejandro. In that sense, they are both culpable.

Maggie: Thanks for the recap. We had a storm halfway through this episode. The last thing I actually saw was Bobby taking the pieces of Rigo's card from Marisela.

Anyway, sure, Hugo is very hurt. But, who is he to complain about Mili and Al. He wasn't exactly leading a meeting of the Lonely Hearts Club while she was on the island. Nefertiti is not a name you're likely to forget anytime soon.

So, how do you say "..my water broke.." in Spanish - not that I'll need it anytime soon. That's another thing I missed. Darn!

From lower Ala

not sure if it was reflexive or not...all I remember (VCR recorder not working and I was lazing on the couch with our lap cat) was "rompió mi fuente"(preterite tense)

Now we can always check with Margarita on the accuracy of that.

In my Oxford dictionary..it gives "rompió aguas" and "rompió la bolsa de aguas". So, hey, maybe there are many ways to say it.

Sorry I can't go back and check the tape. I've ordered a new VCR but it'll be several days in coming and I'll be on vacation next week anyhow.

PS...Don't know if I agree with you, Nina, about what Mili was asking forgiveness for...but yes, it could be multiple things....for marrying him, for not being able to love him as she loved Alejandro, for not being able to resist "giving herself" to Alejandro, for...yes, an infinity of things.

What IS good is that, as a lawyer...you can see many different sides to this issue.

If I were in trouble, I'd sure hire you Nina!

Excellent recap Maggie, thanks!

Ok, apparently Hugo isn't ready to accept the marriage was a huge mistake. I agree with you Judy about Mili's seeming to expect that perdoname will take care of things. I've always had the unpopular opinion that she was using Hugo unfairly - even if he volunteered. It doesn't let you off the hook with me just because someone allows you to treat them badly. And just because Hugo cheated with Nefertiti doesn't excuse Married Mili for sleeping with Married and expectant father Alejandro.

Of course, as soon as Mili finds out about his little romp with Nefertiti, she can get her divorce. Maybe Nefertiti will show up back in the DF and spill the beans.

I'm with all of you, I want Mili and Alejandro together, I just don't think the path to getting there has always been a righteous one for Mili.

Enough of MY rant!

I didn't know we were so close to the end. I thought we were going through Oct with this one. Has this ended in Mx already?

As my hubby said...Hugo was putting on the crocodile tears. What a hypocrite! I think his ego was hurt more than anything. Losing yet again to his cousin.

Mateo, what a joke! I thought he left DF, but the dummy just went to his favorite bar to hide out. He thought he was such a bad ass and now he has to run to gramps for help.

Waiting to see when Rames and Nef will pop back up. Braulio will be thrilled!

I agree JudyB, something is really not right here.

When I watch this show with its teen protagonista I think of all the teengirls watching this and other novelas and wonder what lessons are being beamed out to them.

First off, at the beginning, Mili was an orphan who had to find her way, but who was basically cheery and plucky and loved by all who knew her. Alex was a happy womanizer. In the course of our show, they’ve had nothing but pain and oceans of tears, punctuated by a few moments of heaven, and they both have tons of enemies. Lesson: Love is going to make you suffer horribly.

Then there is the love that is TAN GRANDE that you can’t resist it no matter how hard you try, It will grab you by the hair and drag you around and make you do things you never would have before, including doing things to other people that are ethical disasters. Lesson: Love is giant, irresistible, emotional black hole that will not only suck you in, but will also suck in and destroy the people around you.

Next, you must fight (luchar) for your love. Lesson: If you are struggling against the whole world and continually sobbing, you are in a great relationship!

There is one good lesson here: Don’t marry people you don’t really love. It’s not fair to them and you’ll end up hurting the hell out of them.

Good breakdown of the dangerous messages Maggie. I agree with every point.

So often unfaithful spouses use the "it was bigger than both of us" excuse....believe it....and expect you to believe it.

And all these telenovelas promote the idea that true love is instantaneous (well, in most cases) and irresistible. Sooo dangerous and hurtful.

Oh well...

JudyB – I think that in these cases of instant powerful attraction, there is something that is TAN GRANDE, and it ain’t love, if you get my drift.

Amen sistah!

Well, both American and Mexican media have programming that send these "wrong" messages. But fairy tales and other types of romantic storytelling permeate all cultures and have always done so. Do you believe that young women engage in unsuitable relationships because they see fairytale endings on TV? I think everyone knows the difference, but they can't stop themselves for other reasons, e.g., hormones, wishful thinking, and denial.

So I will just continue to enjoy the novelas for what they are.

Telenovela world says that Guapos ended in Mexico in early June. It probably gives us about 8 more weeks, or early October.

NinaK – you are right about foolish messages on TV and in the movies. Not only love stories, but cop shows, lawyer shows, etc. are nothing like reality, and even reality shows aren’t completely real. Heck, we watch them for entertainment, so we don’t expect or want scholarly examinations of the human condition when we want to have a little fun. We just want to be carried away for a few hours.

What troubles me about the novelas is that they seem to be so pervasive on Spanish-language TV. You can watch novelas all day and through the night. I picture the women watching with a Kleenex in hand and the men hoping the gangsters will come back on and beat somebody up, or there will be more shots of the motorcycle. My main concern is that women will be led to believe that troublesome men can be redeemed by True Love, or that women will enter a bad relationship thinking that this level of pain and conflict is normal, even romantic.

A theme that I don’t recall seeing in English-language shows is the “luchar por nuestro amor” concept. I mean, how do you fight for love? If you do aggressive or sneaky things to your competition, you are going to look bad, or like a nut case. You don’t go after love decked out in armor with a spear in one hand.

Anyway, I think what worries me with Guapos more than other novelas is that, if I understand correctly, it was an afternoon novela aimed at teens. Grown women are supposed to know better, but teens are very impressionable and dreamy.

Thanks to Maggie for the recap and the oh-so-appropriate title =) New mob guy is called Gustavo Villalobos. He’s been dubbed the “Wolf Man” by a few. I like “Tavo” since that is short for Gustavo, though it’s not as colorful as the other one. Also thanks to NinaK for Wednesday’s recap. Damian may indeed have to “do the Macarena” and “take one for the team.” I didn’t get a chance to comment on Wednesday’s epi, so here they are for both.

Stacey, et al – here is what I’ve ascertained from the whole Macarena thing: On Tuesday, the Chunkster and the MS were discussing that she had a wayward sister. Then on Wednesday, Socorro mentioned having a friend, back when she was a dancer, who looked a lot like the Chunkster (and also, they agreed to split cooking for the Lina/Gloria wedding banquet). Therefore, I’m guessing Macarena is the Chunkster’s evil twin sister, and that she probably went to hide in a convent ‘cause she was sick of getting mistaken for the other sis. For a bit of useless trivia, did anyone catch the fact that this bar is called “La Bien Querida” (the well loved)? In Fuego, the bar is called “La Mal Querida” (we have dubbed it the “Bad Love Bar”). Anywhoo, Mono Salazar (the big Mongo guy) has told Damian that Macarena helped him rob some place, then betrayed him, had him thrown in jail, and ran off with the dough. Damian’s mission, which he already accepted, is that he must seduce Macarena, and run off with all the dough, splitting it 50/50 with Mono. This off course blows my theory of a character that looks like Mili’s mom. Wouldn’t make sense to have two sets of characters that look alike.

Anon 4:58 from Wednesday’s epi - I guess creepy camera guy comes from an agency of some sort? Either that, or he told a buddy he was working for Connie, and the friend just called him with the chisme that his new boss was in the slammer. Obviously, he’s not going to tail anyone if nobody’s going to pay him. He decided to take photos of the other two couples when he realized they were there, just to have more chisme for Connie.

Beckster et al, regarding the romanticizing of losing one’s virginity – It’s not just TNs, it’s been happening for ages. Remember Romeo and Juliet? She had a whole speech about how much she wanted, etc. Off course, they ended up dead, but they enjoyed it while they had it. The fact that we are well aware that this is rarely a pleasant (and some times darn near agonizing) experience, doesn’t seem to detract writers, painters, screenwriters, etc. from portraying it as being all wine and roses. There have off course, been exceptions. Those of us that saw Pasion, got to watch newlywed Lisabetta ask her spinster aunt if it would hurt. She replied that she heard it did (never having experienced it herself). Poor Lis got to find out as her new hubby took her by force. In Sin Senos no Hay Paraiso (probably the most realistic TN out there, too real for my taste) 14-year-old prostitute-to-be Catalina asked her BFF/Madam if it’s true that it would hurt. Yesica told her sometimes it was worse that others, but it always hurt. We later see Catalina on a pool table (romantic huh?) with the bodyguard of her potential client, after he snubbed her for a more buxom model. A few scenes later, the BG asks why she’s crying, and she explains she’s still sore, and not sure when she’ll be able to do it again. The answer is revelaed as his buddies appear and threaten to tell the big boss unless they get their turn with her. Mercifully, for all its grit, this TN isn’t terribly graphic, so all we saw was a rose she dropped just before she was deflowered. The same rose was crushed under the boot of one of the goons before she was raped. What I’m saying is that it is a major event, and usually played in one extreme (all sweet and wonderful) or the other (usually rape).

Pasofino – Flor said “se me rompió la fuente” – as JudyB said. “Fuente” means fountain, but also applies to the amniotic sac. Some also call it “bolsa de agua” (water bag).

Rhonda – you’re not alone on Hugo being treated unfairly. We all agree that he was once manipulative, has been a psycho at times, and as Jewels pointed out, has an ego problem since Al slept with his dead fiancée and he always thought he’d be the one with Mili. Having said that, he truly does care for Mili, and showed her his love by trying to let her go, TWICE! Yes, he agreed to enter a loveless marriage deluding himself that things would change, but he did it because she gave him hope, and wasn’t about to turn down the opportunity that he might actually get some. I think it’s a little hypocritical of him to be mad after he cheated as well, but he probably figures he did it ‘cause she did it. He also plans to forget both infidelities (not that he will) and move on with his insane marriage (and we all had such hopes!). I suspect we may get another rape attempt from him =( Maggie makes a good point on this sending bad messages about what “true love” is. However, they do show the rare couples that have happy, healthy marriages (Horacio and Socorro) to even things out. Off course, any young people watching this one would probably identity with our younger leads instead. They may even see Gloria’s trick to snag Chamuco as sound advice, even if everyone that knows better tries to tell her she’s in the wrong.

Thanks for the ending info NinaK. I was a little shocked when I first saw the “ultimas semanas” announcement, and wondered how many weeks they meant. I thought I saw a preview for something new a few days ago (it was once and I didn’t pay a lot of attention, but I don’t think it was “Las Tontas no van al Cielo”) so we’ll probably hear more about that in the next few weeks.

Maggie – Guapos started off as an afternoon PM, but apparently switched to prime time (hence, more sex and treachery?). Chances are a lot of teens kept up with it though. I think most folks understand that there is a difference between reality and fiction though – at least we hope.... The concept of “fighting for you love,” means simply not giving up. If there’s a misunderstanding, you try to clear it up. If they hurt you, you do your best to forgive them. If other problems arise, you try to solve them. Alas, some crazy folks do interpret it as real fighting and that’s where lies and schemes and fistfights arise.

Thanks for all this great info, Margarita. You have an amazing memory for all the plot details!

It’s VERY interesting that Guapos started off in the afternoon and then switched to evenings. That explains a lot. For a good part of the beginning of our show, it seemed to me that things happened way too fast, and that there was very little emotional backwash to what usually would be majorly upsetting events. Conflict and resolution would happen in one episode, and then it was like the slate was wiped clean. That certainly has changed, and the show has considerable emotional depth now.

As for fighting for your love, it seems that in the novelas that advice is offered when there is competition and the protagonist/a’s friend tells our hero or heroine to go out and blow the competitor out of the game.

Margarita, thanks for all that extra info and philosophizing. You are probably among our best Spanish speakers and also you seem to be watching every show! So that helps fill us in.

No one has commented on Rigoberto yet. I found him very thuggy and unattractive. Why was Flor so broken up about losing him?

I can't decide about Rigoberto. He LOOKS kind of thuggy, but I don't think we really know what happened between him and Flor. I think it has been said that he cheated on her or maybe just betrayed her, but given that this is Flor, who knows what really went on or how she misinterpreted things. I think Flor was upset because she was humiliated that things didn't work out for her. But I'm just guessing that he may have some story that makes him not so bad; he may just as well be totally evil. I am interested to know why Bobby looked so amused upon learning that this guy was Flor's ex, or what was on that business card that was of such interest to Bobby. "Suegro-killers-R-Us"? "Rigo the Fairy Florist"? "Padre Rigo"?

Speaking of Bobby, I wonder if his parents will bother to come to his wedding. At least Luci and Connie won't be there.

As much as I hate Flor, I do feel a little sorry for her, having to give birth on the side of the road with the people she hates the most assisting. Worst. Road trip. Ever.

I really appreciate this blog, I come to it often to make sure that I really understood some of the finer points of these Novellas. I just wanted to say I got a little teary last night when the "Ultimas Semanas" came up on the screen. My Husband thought that I was a little nutty...

Does anyone know the hotel that the group was staying at in P.V.
I am going there and would like to visit the hotel.

There are 30 episodes left. Hugo was a gigantic hipocrit with his treatment of Mili. Not hours before he was rolling around in the pool having sex with a women who picked him up after missing with Rocky, not with someone he loved.

I don't condone Mili's actions but she isn't along in this mess.

As for the divorce Mili will get one but I suspect that Hugo has turned into a true Arango and will get caught with someone else.

From those previews it looks like Mili will be the one who helps Flo give birth to the child she no longer wants or needs. Should be mucho fun.

Loved Bobby saying he was the lucky guy. He does seem to be able to resist MP2 obvious advances.
