Doña Bárbara - Thurs., Sept. 4- Love and sex in the Llanos: Pigpens, princesses and butterflies

Howdy all! I really enjoyed last night's episode. As Margarita pointed out in a comment to my last post, it's amazing how Luisana's appearance puts you on Bárbara's side.

Lots of name calling in this episode. Luisana says about DB:
Lo que es: una vieja sucia, indecente, maleducada y sinverguenza.
What you are is an dirty old woman, indecent, badly educated and shameless.
DB slaps her.
Luisana says that DB is a beast, a savage.

DB says that she is a savage and that is what Santos likes and why he comes to her bed and not Luisana's. Luisana replies that Santos doesn't come to her bed because she is a decent woman. Santos is a gentleman and Luisana is his 'princess.' Luisana says that she and Santos belong to the same civilized world where they can have conversations. Santos could only talk to DB about cows ('vacas'). She says that is why DB is not her rival. He can sleep with DB until she marries him. Luisana asks how DB could think that Santos could love a disgusting, low-class old woman ('una vieja asquerosa y ordinaria') like her.


DB loses it at this point and drags Luisana to the pigsty ('chiquero') and pushes her down in it much to the amusement of her employees.

Thence forward, DB calls Luisana Little Princess Pigpen ('princesita de chiquero). At this point Santos shows up. Luisana denies that she said such things to DB but Santos is disgusted with both of them.

A bird! I'm pretty sure this is a Violaceous Euphonia.

When Luisana gets cleaned up, we get a good look at what DB calls her 'fake boobs' ('pechugona artificial'). Luisana's strategy is to play the victim and make Santos feel guilty. However, like a lot of clever people, Luisana talks too much and Santos overhears her telling Mauricio about her plan. Mauricio also warns Luisana about DB. He's heard a lot of bad things about her and where there's smoke, there's fire ('cuando el rio suena es porque piedras trae,' literally, 'when the river makes noise, it's because it's carrying stones.')

Cecilia finally admits her love for Antonio. Antonio calls her his 'butterfly' ('mariposa'). We find out that Cecilia is 8 years older than Antonio. Federica finally makes it to town and finds Antonio's hotel.

Before dinner, Marisela's hair was the same untidy hank it's always been but at dinner and afterward here at the dance, she seems to have gotten her hair cut. Another encounter with Juan Pablo Shuk (I can't remember his character's name) leads to a wardrobe malfunction for Marisela.

Finally, the very cute Orestes finds out that DB sent him off on a wild goose chase and he returns to El Miedo to confront her about the death of his father.

I was wondering when the heck Marisela squeezed in a haircut. Wonder if they will keep it, or if this will be another case of magical growing/shortening hair.

I also can't remember what Shuk's name is in this one, but he apparently knows Santos from before.
 

Yes, a really good episode. So far Doña Bárbara is making the watching of FELS (which I'm only watching for the great commenters on Caray, Caray) seem like watching paint dry.

I was totally disgusted thinking they were going to let La Princesa Chiquero pull off her scam. But this novela is better than that. Santos overheard her plotting with her primo. I love the scenes with DB and Eustachia, who is a great actress and one of my favorites in the novela. Sometimes when they have roles for servants or helpers in telenovelas they are ridiculous stereotypes, loyal to evil bosses, full of comedy schtick to portray their humble backgrounds, etc. But Eustachia is an indian woman who took Barbarita to her tribe for curing. She is full of dignity and always gives DB sage advice.

If I haven't already said so, thanks so much for creating this space for what I think is the best novela on TV right now.
 

One more thing. I've been trying to figure out what era this is supposed to be. The book came out in 1929. I haven't seen any telephones. Last night Federica and her "chaperone" got into a beautiful vintage taxi. Luisana and Maurice flew into the llano in a plane, but I don't know if it was a new or old one. Now that I think about it, though, the rich guy who's also after Luisana had a scene in, I think, a modern looking boardroom. Anyone know for sure what era?

You are welcome. I really like this novela, too. I find all the characters, with the possible exception of Luisana, very interesting. It's very well done so far.

As for the time of the novela, according to the TW foro, it is set in an unspecified modern time. There are planes and cars and motorboats but otherwise there isn't a lot of reference to the time in which it takes place.

The Llanos is obviously much less technically advanced than 'the capital.' It is obviously possible to get from the town to Altamira and El Miedo by motorized vehicle but everyone seems to travel on horseback.

Jean, my only guess for the using of horses as transportation is that's it's cheaper to use an animal that already needs to exercise than to spend gas from a truck you primarily use for hauling stuff. That and the roads aren't paved, unless they are already in the city. I guess the people who live in the town proper probably walk or bike.
 

Oh, I also loved Maurice's theory that he's found Santos' weakness: difficult/crazy women ;)
 

Thanks for the photos, Jean. I'm really enjoying this TN and all the people, scenery, horses, etc. are really beautiful.

I knew DB would lose her temper and touch more than a hair on Luisana's head, but boy did she stuff her face in the pig muck...
