QE Thurs 10/30 - I once knew a lovely young lass, who had an incredible

UPDATE: JudyB's vocab list posted at end of recap and some errors in the translation were corrected thanks to astute commenters. Thanks everyone!

Friends, after all the brouhaha about saying ass, you'll never believe where I was tonight. I am late posting because I went to a seminar at Stanford entitled "The No Asshole Rule - Building a Civilized Workplace". I kid you not, it's absolutely true. I was going to try to incorporate the no asshole principals into this recap but I got started too late and I'm too tired. However I will touch upon one or two points as they arise. But first a limerick that I recall from the days when I used to play rugby...

I once knew a lovely young lass
Who had an incredible ass.
Not pretty and pink,
as you probably think,
it was grey, had long ears and ate grass.

And now, on with the show...
From last night: Pati gets the jitters and can't cook with Ern on his show. She suggests Lorena who, coincidentally, is waiting in the wings.

Ern is desperate and asks Lor to cook on his show with him, the producer wants the show to feature a cooking couple. She makes a feeble attempt to refuse but he ends up talking her into it. Work it Ernesto.

Jaime scolds Julian for being a weepy little wimp, does he think he's the only person in the world who's lost someone? Julian cries "you're the last person to talk". Jaime agrees but he's in a position to tell Julian how it is, he'll only hurt himself. And what if Zulema wakes up and sees Julian like this? Julian, steeped in self-pity, cries that nobody can help him. Jaime agrees, only Julian can help himself. It looks like Julian finally listens to Jaime and cries into a pillow just a little bit more to prove he can. Jaime delivers criticism and bad news but he does it in a respectful manner, therefore Jaime = not an asshole.

The director seems glad to see Lorena but he requests no screw-ups like when she auditioned, OK? (Looks like they still don't know Sara tampered with her ingredients.) The cameras get ready.

Fafy Cuenca calls Sara and invites his gatita to his penthouse for kisses. She answers coyly. By the way, here is what Fafy Cuenca world renowned playboy looked like in the 70's:

Yes, it's the same guy.

Ernesto plans to make shrimp souffles on today's program. Unfortunately on the day he taught this recipe in class Lorena was busy not telling Ernesto that she found her parents . No matter, she's confident she can wing it. Lorena starts off the program with her own style. Ern wants to beat the eggs with a metal globe whisk. Lorena prefers a traditional one which works perfectly when used with the light touch of a woman. She advises adding a touch of flour to the base. Ern freaks, one never adds flour to a souffle! Lor knows it's not correct but it helps the souffle hold its shape. When Ern tries to correct her she confidently does her own thing. They banter a bit. The fans go crazy and are emailing in that they like it.

They pull the "souffles" which are in muffin tins out of the oven. Ern calls them muffins because they have flour in them. Lor says call them what you want but they'll come out of the pan easier. She proceeds to decapitate the first two muffins. Ern demonstrates how its done and he removes it perfectly. He suggests that maybe they are too hard due to the flour. He tastes it and pronounces it absolutely delicious, flour and all. Lor agrees, and the secret is a touch of flour. They both laugh as the show ends.

Looks like Sara is all dressed up to go do a number on Fafy. She calls Bruto who tells her to go hunt Fafy and not to let him escape.

The fans like Lorena, "The chef is good but the chick adds pepper to the program." The director invites her to be part of the show. More lame refusals from Lor and she finally agrees to think about it to Ern's great joy.

Julian grumpily goes home. Diana is surprised to see him.

Alonso goes to the clinic to see Zulema. La Doctora tells Al she really misses him and now that Bruto left she is short on doctors. Al is surprised to hear Bruto got another job.

Tori and Betina are out getting ice cream when Tori runs into Santiago. I finally figured out who this guy reminds me of, Sean Penn! Does anyone else see it? Santiago recognizes Tori and reminds him they went to prep school together.

Fafy Cuenca drones on about selling buildings and buying hotels, and caresses Sara, he loves her perfume. She can barely squeeze out what an interesting guy he is. He asks about her and she says she's a lonely person. How can that be, he asks, she's more brilliant than the sun! She makes him feel sorry for her because she's an orphan. She smirks when he sighs "pobrecita".

Santi coos over Bettina and tells Tori even though he doesn't have a granddaughter his life is full. He's the lacky of Fafy Cuenca who also went to school with them blah blah blah the same old crap, I don't need to repeat. Tori pretends to barely remember Fafy Cuenca but we soon find out he recalls him well. Tori gives Santi the brushoff and escapes with Bet.

Sara faces Fafy so she can show him her cleavage. She kisses his hand and says his protection would make her so happy. She loves him but she's suffered so much in her life. She's afraid to love him and then he'll leave her all alone, sniff sniff, better to not connect at all.

Tori tells Betina that he remembers Fafy Cuenca and he didn't like him. Fafy stole Tori's girlfriend of two years when they were in school. Betts thinks her gramps is a real lady's man what with all the old gals flocking around. She's sure Tori is way hotter than Fafy Cuenca now.

Fafy offers to take Sara to Australia. He says go ahead and pack your bags. She hugs him and gives the over-the-shoulder-ulterior-motive look.

Diana and Lor girl-talk about her stint on the show. Lor says it felt great cooking at Ern's side but she has her classes, etc. and doesn't have time for the show. Diana, who should be her agent, says screw everything else this is a super opportunity.

Next scene is in a tacky-looking living room. Figures, it's Greta's. Her voice bugs me and her boobs are everywhere. I don't really have a problem with her boobs and I know it's a treat for the guys, but I wish she would shut up. She's sarcastic to Omar, asks how is his new secretary, efficient? Omar says she's as cold as a wall, again did I mention how whipped he is? He says he's only happy when he's with her and he begs her to come back to him. His only happiness will be when she's with him. Regreta looks impactada.

Samuel calls Snorty and reports that Sara rented a room and was visited by a man. "Of course, because she's a..." snips Snorty. Samuel says Sara moved out abruptly and maybe she's with the guy.

Regreta bitches at Omar while wearing her super-low sweater. She'd be hot if she weren't such a bitch. What do they say? No matter how hot a babe is there's some guy somewhere who's tired of her s**t. Anyway, she tells Omar that she refuses to be his lover, the other woman. He begs her to understand, he's not free because Zulema's not dead. She rudely tells him if he wants to cry at the foot of his wife's bed until she dies that's his problem. Conveying bad news but doing so in a disrespectful, demeaning and accusatory way...Greta = asshole.

Rosy cries about Julian to Jaime and Maruja. He went home to his mami's house. She decides to try to call him and announces she's not meant to be a martyr.

Sara and Bruto open champagne, toast, swap bodily fluids and congratulate themselves. She tells him what a great job she did on Fafy by making him feel sorry for the poor little orphan girl. He's taking her away, too bad she has to boink him. But enough talk about Fafy, right now she wants to do it with Bruto, she's never done it with a "gay".

Santi tells Fafy that he ran into Toribio, Fafi doesn't remember Tori. Fafi tells Santi about Sara, she's a real sweetie. Santi says she's astute and probably wants to catch him and marry him. Fafy assures him but there isn't a woman born who can wed Fafy Cuenca.

Lor and Diana worry about where Julian is, he left early and there's no sign of him. Lor tells Diana he hasn't made up with Rosy because Rosy called looking for him. Dad isn't home either. Is he working late? Where are the weak, unreliable men of the household?

Maruja consoles Rosy because Julian is such a stubborn jerk. Maruja advises her to believe in him. Rossy cries some more.

Omar gets home late and is greeting by the accusing stares of his daughters. They complain to him about Julian's behavior, he lost his job and he's turning into an alcoholic. Julian staggers in on cue and whines that he can't go on while his mother is in a living hell, 'no puedo no puedo' is his mantra. His sisters tell him he's turning into an alcoholic. Omar yells and threatens to send him to rehab. Julian looks like he wants to barf.

Omar tells Julian he's ready to deploy intervention if Julian doesn't get his act together. He tells Julian to sleep it off and they'll discuss the subject tomorrow. Omar tells the girls he doesn't want to do it but he can do it if he has to.

Next morning Snorty tells Jaime she feels sick, she could hardly sign the papers for the sale of the house, and then she had to use all the money to pay off the debts and damages (of the food poisoning lawsuit I presume). She has nothing. Jaime tells her to be strong, they say once you've hit the bottom there's nowhere to go but up. Snorty says those people probably never fell from such a height. Snorty before: made people feel demeaned, didn't recognize her own employees, was a tyrant over those less powerful = asshole. Snorty now = reformed asshole.

Sara and Bruto pack their bags and discuss how repugnant the octegenarian is. Bruto reminds her Fafy is loaded. They leave separately so as not to arouse suspicion. After Bruto leaves Sara smiles, "Old lover, new life". Sara and Bruto = undeniable assholes.

Vasco brings flowers to Babs to celebrate her new executive position in the family biz. Pati works for Babs I guess and brings something to her. Pati and Vasco check each other out with stars in their eyes. Vasco nudges Babs until she introduces them. He tells her he works in ecology and she thinks it's nifty.

It's a doleful breakfast at casa pobre. Julian sits down to breakfast and Omar asks if he remembers their conversation from last night. It's enough to put Julian off his breakfast. The family confronts him with all their evidence, he lost his job, he left Rosy's house, he won't admit he has a drinking problem. Fine, he says, he'll give it up, he promises. Omar is confident he'll keep his word.

Snorty says her punishment is to lose her business but the good that's come out of it is her family has forgiven her. Then she says something truly insightful and touching, "They have forgiven me but they don't love me." She bitches about Sara, she'll make Sara pay for everything she did, even if it's the last thing she does in her life. I always get worried when characters use that exact phrase.

Ern tells the producer he knows Lorena won't accept his offer, he knows her well, they used to be novios. "Ah, that explains the chemistry" chuckles the producer. Ern tells him he'd be better off finding someone else. "Now more than ever I want that girl" the producer vows.

He calls Lor and tells her he wants to make her an offer she can't refuse.

Fafy is with Santi and Bruto. Fafy pats himself down and tells him he's making sure of the three "P's" that are necessary for every traveler, pasaporte, plata, y pasajero (passport, money, ticket). Sara arrives and Fafy tells her she's lovely, "Sydney waits for us". She corrects him, with him it's heaven that waits for her. Bruto looks on approvingly and tries to appear gay about it.

Pau and Greta play cards. Paula blabs on about her booming business of selling face cream to metrosexuals but Greta is out of sorts, she's all alone and wants cream to make her invisible. Pau suggests that Greta work with her and when she wins her own car she'll feel a lot better. All Greta wants is Omar and she's lost him forever.

Speaking of, he's weeping again at Zulema's bedside. Blah blah all they built up together and now she has abandoned him. He needs a woman. HIS woman! Asshole.

Back at the cooking show Ernesto is practicing. Celeste and the producer think he needs Lorena to pep things up. When she arrives they butter her up by showing her the fan mail. She tells them she's thought it over and she accepts!

Lorena shows up on set while Ern is practicing his show and gives him a big smile. He figures out she's on board with the show and rewards us with a bigger smile of his own. Que guapo!

Producer says Lorena agreed to be on the show, thank goodness because Ernesto was cooking like a Zombie. She jokes that sometime he is an ogre, ha ha. Producer is sure that Lorena will help make the show a huge success.

Lorena gets home and Julian is moping. She tells him he should be at Rosy's asking saying a thousand sorries. He says he doesn't have the face for it. She grabs his hand and tells him if he acts like a child she'll treat him like one, she's taking him home to Rosy's house.

Al walks along talking to himself, he's about to teach his first class and what if it's a disaster? No, can't think like that, take a deep breath and power on.

Lor tells Rossy that Julian wants to talk to her. He tells Rosy and Maru that he acted like an idiot and he's sorry. Rosy agrees they need to talk and she is very, but very, disillusioned with him.

Al arrives to class and is recognized by a student, he's fearful but the student tells Al he operated on his dad and saved his life. His dad is fine now and he thinks Al is an excellent surgeon. Al comments that he hopes he can be an excellent teacher. He proceeds with confidence to discuss the kidney.

Julian and Rossy make up and he promises to lay off the booze and look for work. Julian, realizing the world doesn't revolve around him = recovering asshole.

Jaime gets home and tells Lor and Maru that he took his ma to a hotel where she's going to live alone, what a shame. Santa Lorena volunteers her own house, golly gee as long as it's OK with dad.

Al instructs the class on the value of the kidneys, how they filter blood and how they eradicate residual chemicals from the body via urine. One weird student asks how many liters of urin does one pass in a day? Two liters, but in order to produce this quantity the kidneys process 200 liters of blood. Wow how fascinating, yawn. Is this supposed to mean something to us? Maybe it will lead to Zulema's cure or something.

Paula is on the phone with Greta, sounds like she's snagged her into the cosmetics business. She's happy and tells Toribio she's about to get promoted, she has more than 20 sellers under her, which is weird because I didn't know Paula knew 20 people. Whatever. They hope Al is as happy in his new career as she is in hers. Tori tells her he's nervous and he feels like he dropped Al off for his first day at kindergarten.

Over at Casa pobre Diana is telling Omar that she didn't have time to visit the clinic. Lor blasts in, she has news and they need to talk. She tells Omar that his ma is moving into a hotel, she thought maybe she could live there. Diana doesn't like the idea, it's one thing to forgive Snorty but another to let her move in with them. Lor thinks the house is too empty with Zuly and Julian gone. Omar replies it's not just his house, he doesn't mind but if Diana doesn't want Snorty there then he respects her opinion. Lorena scampers after him while Diana looks defeated.

Snorty is all packed and ready to go. As Augusta helps her down the stairs she dismally tells herself to be strong, but how can she be strong when faced with this? She earned her solitude, it's the beginning of the end.

Omar enters and tells her he wants her to live in his house with them. Looks like Lorena gets her way again.

Snorty hugs him and looks both sad and happy at the same time.

Cap'n Sylvia: Your recap was wonderful, really exceptional. I really appreciate your noting important comments that those of us who don't speak Spanish and who don't have captions would ordinarily miss such as Hortensia saying her family "has forgiven me but they don't love me".

Hard to pick, but my other favorite quote was "Pau and Greta play cards. Paula blabs on about her booming business of selling face cream to metrosexuals but Greta is out of sorts, she's all alone and wants cream to make her invisible." Excellent!

Looks like there may be some changes in several of the couples. You commented yesterday Sylvia that Diana has become Ernesto's cheerleader and may be a good match with Ernesto should (heaven forbid) he not end up with Lorena. With the sparks flying between Vasco and Patty yesterday, Diana better act quickly to reconcile with Vasco. I also thought Paula may end up with Raimundo but he hasn't appeared so that may not happen either.

I don't want to be too hopeful but Ernesto and Lorena had a lot of fun and exuded great chemistry on the show. Alonso seems to be settling in nicely in his teaching career so Valeria is welcome to show up any time now.

In spite of what she's been through, Lorena continues to have a heart of gold, talking Omar into inviting Hortensia to the house. It will be interesting to see how Hortenia's presence plays out in the lesser (and now only) house.

Who would have thought we'd be looking to Bruno and Sara to provide some relief from the seemingly endless sad events of the past few weeks? Can't wait to see how their latest adventure is going to end up.

Diana in MA

Hey Miss Sylvia....you played rugby!!!??? I am so impressed. That is one rough sport.

Anyway, loved your recap and the link. Especially happy to know one can use the "No A**hole" book in a Bible Study. That's where I was last night so I missed the show. But I recorded it and now that I know there's a cute scene with Lorena and Ernesto, I will certainly watch! Our study, by the way, was on Hebrews, not Corinthians (link) but there is speculation that a woman (Priscilla) actually wrote the book of Hebrews! But I digress....

Sorry to hear Omar is still sniffing around Greta. And wonder if we're going to have a Mary Kay placement ad....winning a car sounds very much like their way of doing business. Loved your quip 20 people under her? I didn't even think Paula knew 20 people!

Thanks too for the Fafy 70's photo. I find him reasonably attractive in his present state but that's because of my age no doubt. Somebody has to love these oldsters! I'm sure if I were still Sara's age, I'd find him repellant. But heck, Bruno's repellant at any age!

Hub recovering well...went out and walked some stores the other day....things are looking good and I'm cooking super-low fat. Hate to give up my queso but will have to use it when Bob's not around (guilty secret).

Cap'n Sylvia , have you learned nothing from yesterdays tirade ?

I was shocked when I started reading your recap. I could hardly continue , but I gritted my teeth and managed to get through to the end. Not knowing if that word would pop up with the next sentence.

I guess you are just incorrigible and I'll have to accept you as just you are .

Now I have two questions .

If Snorty is broke , is the inheritance also gone or did she have a trust fund set up that couldn't be touched?

Second if Fafi is a con man who is going to con?No one has any money.
The lesser house has only Omar with a job, Diana hasn't been to work , all the others are in a start-up company which needs lots of capital to get going , Bruto has no money , Sara's broke.
Ern has his book , teaching ,and TV show but three kids and a house keeper, rent or mortgage ,etc.

This only leaves Ray, who may or may not be making money with the new restaurant.

Mark

Diana....are you sure you don't have captions? How old is your TV? (hope your TV doesn't mind my asking). Schoolmarm knows all about this, but from a certain date on, all televisions were required to have closed captions...it's just knowing how to access them. We have to do ours manually on the downstairs tv but on the little one upstairs, we can do it with the remote.

Dorado Dave didn't think he had them but after some coaching, he found he did and I'm pretty sure you must as well. Check it out.

My novice Spanish improved by leaps and bounds with the CC's because I could write down words I didn't know and look them up. It was better and more efficient than taking adult ed classes (which I tried for a while).

judyb: Being the technologically challenged person that I am, I don't even know if captions are available on our 22 year old TV.

I do plan to buy a second TV at some point and captions will be a definite requirement! My husband has spent endless hours over the past year pouring over and studying Spanish language books. He really feels the telenovas have helped him learn. So, he's happy without the captions and I know I'll be much happier with them (once I figure out how to access them of course).

Thanks for your thoughtful and encouraging suggestions Judy. I'm surprised at the number of things I have been able to pick up on and actually understand but I know there's so much I'm missing. Diana in MA

Diana...I'll write to Schoolmarm and find out exactly when TV's were required to have closed captioning and get back to you. We actually have a tv (black n white) that dates back to 72. We've had several more recent ones die during that time!

I would not be able to recap without the closed captions. There are a handful of times that my CC went out and I had to wing it but it was really tough. Good for you Diana for watching without them! I sometimes do that on my 'nights off' to help train my ears.

JudyB, glad you checked out the link. It was an interesting seminar and I think we will read the book at work for our next book club pick. I forgot to mention that Professor Sutton (author of the book) said that the medical profession was notably rife with jerks, doctors in particular. In this show all the doctors seem quite nice, probably because they work at the neighborhood clinic and don't make a ton of money. The exception of course is Bruto, and I'm sure he would be a nasty piece of work no matter what his profession.

Mark, I think we'll find out tonight if Fafy Cuenca is a con. If they went to Australia he is probably not. Regarding Snorty's money, I had a bit of trouble with the translation, but I believe in her exchange with Jaime she made it pretty clear what with the debts, the lawsuit, and selling her mansion cheaply she was pretty tapped out. No mention of a trust fund. And thank you for your patience with this ex-rugby playing sailor. I promise to try a little harder to behave myself so as not to estrange the faithful commenters and my fellow recappers. As for the occasional nut cases, you can all go...oops, never mind.

Happy Halloween everyone! What are y'all going to be for Halloween? I am usually a vampire, a flesh-eating zombie or some sort of ghoul, but this year I'm going to be a kitty cat, our company cat Squeakers to be precise. Meowwww!

Thanks for the great and funny recap!
I also enjoyed the link to the interesting seminar you went to!!Wow! Wish they could have had one of those seminars years ago when I was a teacher!!! Some of those administrators.......Oh, well....

Well, Fafy looked better with longer hair " back in the day". Greta somehow reminded me of 'Elvira...mistress of the dark' what with her low cut blouse and all!!!

As for closed captioning....Don't know what happened but when we switched to a different cable company, I can't get CC on univision!!! It's really frustrating! But it comes on fine for telefutura, Galavision, and Telemundo. Don't know what's up with that!!! :(

Really great recap, Sylvia. Thanks for sharing what you learned in your seminar with us! ;)

I liked your "and tries to appear gay about it" quip.

It looks like Omar is just too far gone now. That's been a really weird character development.

I also didn't expect Vasco to have interest in anyone else, but good for him. Diana's had a horrible experience with Bruno, but she's always had the upper hand with Vasco. It doesn't hurt for her to have some competition so she fully appreciates him.

I've chosen to purposely not use my closed captioning because it forces me to listen more closely and I feel really brilliant when I understand what's being said. :)

But I've been thinking about Judyb's comments about the closed captioning helping her learn more, and I might start switching back and forth. I have noticed for example on spanish language DVDs that I have learned by using the captions. And during the Obama half-hour paid programming on Wednesday I still had on Univision and was really interested in watching the spanish subtitles while hearing english since I struggle with sentence construction in spanish.

becky t: Greta as Elvira - hysterical! Wasn't Elvira called "mistress of the dark"? Nuff said. Diana in MA

Sorry Becky t - I was laughing so hard at your Greta/Elvira comparison, I commented before reading that you already noted her "mistress of the dark" title. Still chuckling, Diana in MA

If there's one thing I don't miss about the 70s (there are actually many), it's those crappy mustaches. Is there a name for that style of mustache, or do we just call it "that 70's mustache"?

Built-in support for closed captions didn't become required until July 1993, and that was only for 13" screens or larger.

There are still lots of TVs that are smaller and/or older. Only last week did I finally give away the one I bought in 1991. I didn't buy another full-size TV until 2 years ago, and I did so only because I wanted the captions!

Mark, you are too funny.

I really don't think Fafy is a con man. Bruno and Sara had no difficulty finding out about his life and his past on the Internet. It's true that you can do a number of clever things to misrepresent yourself online, but there are limits - I don't think Bruno and Sara are that gullible. I just think they're naive to believe that Fafy would marry her.

Also, if Fafy and his friend were doing a con, I think that's what they'd probably talk about when they're alone together. Fafy wouldn't be saying "I'm going to take Sara to Sydney with me," he'd be saying "so tell me again how and when we're going to make our move?"

Julie, thanks for the info on the closed caption requirements. I really rely on and am grateful for the excellent summaries and comments the recappers and commenters provide. Diana in MA

I predict that FOF is going to turn out to be gay. He's going to hit on Bruno and Bruno's sexual hetero. orientation is going to be revealed and **ht will fly.
Emily

I have another question why do you all spell "Fafy", "Fafy" ? On my closed caption it comes out "Fafi".
Is there a difference in the Spanish?
Doesn't really matter , just curious.

Mark

Hi Diana...yes, Schoolmarm confirmed what Julie told you...only on TV's after '93 was the closed caption chip put in. So time to stimulate the economy and get a new one!

Mark, my captions spell it Fafy (sometimes, depends on the night) but in TV & Novelas they spell it Fafi. Maybe that's why several of our recappers are just calling him Fluffy!

Julie, I loved that 70's mustache. Tried to get my husband to grow one (and a beard) in our first year of marriage (figured I had leverage then) but it didn't happen.

Fafy/Fafi/Fluffy, Rossy/Rosy/Rossi, Tonki/Tonky/Tonqui/...

judyB: Thanks so much. I'm trying to save up bit by bit but have a feeling I'll be in for a shock as I haven't shopped for electronics in well, 22 years...I am probably one of the few left who still doesn't own a dvd player. My microwave oven is such a dinosaur, heaven only knows what it's emitting (which may explain my continuing to watch FELS). Diana in MA

We have a DVD player because my son won it as "employe of the month" one time. However they have become cheaper with time. That's the key....hold off long enough until the price comes down.

Have no idea what tv's cost these days but as long as one doesn't go for the wide-screen high-def stuff I would assume it's not too horrendous. But that all depends on the family budget. With gas and groceries going up, discretionary items do have to be saved for. I only work part-time and my husband is retired, so...... and of course I love to spend my discretionary on grandkids.

Hope it works out for you. I took a whole page of notes on Sylvia's show. There were a lot of idiomatic expression and a few dichos and so I do think closed captioning is an excellent investment for the beginning student. And believe me, adult ed classes are not cheap. So for that, a new tv would "pay for itselrf".

Really terrific recap, Sylvia. I forgot to record last night but now I feel like I saw it.

If you have cable, you should be able to get closed captions even if your TV itself doesn't have the closed caption chip. You can change your cable settings so that the CC is added directly to the video feed. I can tell you how to do it if you have Comcast and the Comcast DVR, for other systems I'm sure there are instructions available somewhere.

JudyB, I was pretty exhausted last night and didn't do a good job on idiomatic expressions. If you're up to sharing please feel free to put them in the comments or email them to me and I would be happy to add them to the bottom of the post.

Sylvia...I write down things other people might not find important. So feel free to "cull". Also, some of these have already been in that great vocab list you and Mano Derecha put together" But here's what I noted for me...if you think it's worthy, just add it.

panico escnico = stage fright
bloquée = frozen with fright (Patty)
le da el toque = gave it that special touch
cortarlo por lo sano= cut him short for goodness sakes! (Santiago going on and on)
salir ronchitas = breaking out in a rash (what happened to Lorena last time she was on the show
a se le pegó a uno como chicle= he'll stick to you like gum, be a real drag (Toribio talking about Santiago)
dinero mata carita= money overrides good looks( when it comes to women acc. to Toribio)
me fue de espaldas= I was astonished (Diana, talking about seeing Lorena on show)
no seas cabeza dura=don't be stubborn
fria como una pared=totally cold (I think you noted that one)
tengo derecho a darme mi lugar-I have a right to be respected
yo no sirvo para martir=I've no interest in being a martyr (Rossy)
para que le ponga un "hasta aqui"=for him (Omar) to set (Julian) straight
no hay mal que dura cien años= this will all blow over (Maruja comforting Rossy)
y por si acaso no estoy por sermones=just in case, I'm not up for any sermons (Julian to family)
mañana cuando estes in tu juicio=tomorrow when you're sober (in your right mind), thinking straight etc.
pisandome los talones=dogging my heels (Hortensia about creditors)
lo de Rossy es asunto aparto= Rossy is another matter
ella es mandona=she's bossy, she's a ball breaker
me sacó de orbita=another way of saying me sacó des casillas=drove me nuts, made me lose it
me gané mi soledad a pulso= I "earned" my loneliness (deserved it...Hortensia)

By the way, when I'm writing a recap I never get that many expressions because I'm concentrating on putting it into English. Sometimes I have no expressions at all or only a few vocabulary notes embedded.

On nights when I'm not recapping is when I learn the most Spanish.

Howdy =)

Thank you kindly Capn' for a fabu recap and for your link on "workplace" (haven't finished reading, but I enjoyed what I read). I also enjoyed the "young Fafy" pic. I think he's "attractive for his age" (and looked well in in his prime), but definitely older than what I would go for.

Re: Tori's exchange with Santiago - Tori tried to make it look like he did NOT remember Fafy, and later explained to Beti it's because Fafy stole his girl back in HS. Apparently, Fafy had money back then (probably comes from old money) and that's how he got so many girls. I'm with the band that thinks Santiago is gay (I was convinced he was Fafy's secret lover before Fafy started hitting on Sara). My guess, as the whole meeting seemed out of left field, is that somehow Tori will find out that Sara's with Fafy and unmask her.

Re: Is Fafy a con man? - Depends on your definition. Did you ever see the show or the movie "Cabaret"? There was a swinging rich guy who took our young heroes for a ride and then ditched them when he tired of them. It's clear the man has $$$ (and did even when he was young), and I don't see him trying to get money out of Sara or Bruto. However, he may well just be stringing them along for a while (perhaps the jewelry isn't even real) and may ditch them (or at least Sara) when he's bored. Unless I missed it, he never actually gave Clinic 23 any money, just promised it. He probably likes to show it around to get his way and then stiffs them. That would be a nice ending for our two little sociopaths. Incidentally: How the heck did Sara get a passport so quickly? It's probably provisional, and Fafy will find out who she is, and leave her and Bruto stranded in some foreign country that doesn't even speak Spanish. I will laugh ;)

I too wondered if Al's boring kidney lecture would lead to him finding out a way to help Zuly. Hopefully it will, 'cause I'd like to see her get better.

I could have smacked Omar for going after Greta. He's not only being horrible to his family for cheating, but was quite insulting to Greta telling her he wants her to be his mistress again. Much as she annoys me, I hope she finds someone who actually works out for her.

OTOH, I hope Ickturo and his mom get their comeuppance. Maybe they will run into Sara and Bruto during their travels and it will hit the fan...That would be fun too ;)

Quick correction - I only want Ickturo to go to jail or something. Finding out what a loser her baby is should be enough punishment for mean mom.

I don't know how things are in Mexico, but my father's employer was able to get him a passport within just a few days when they wanted him to go to Germany. There must be a expensive, fast-track way to get a passport for business "emergencies," VIPs, etc.

Or maybe she used Chalo's forger friend to get her a fake one shortly after she left the orphanage.

I also thought Fafy's friend was gay and that it was Fafy who had stolen Tori's girlfriend. It says something about Fafy (but not anything surprising) that he doesn't even remember Toribio or the girlfriend.

Hey Sylvia! Just wanted to stop by and tell you that you're doing a great job. That seminar must have been very interesting!

Thanks Nickster! Thanks to you folks for the correction that Fafy stole Tori's girlfriend, that makes so much more sense. JudyB, I will post your AWESOME additions as soon as I get a chance.

You guys rock!!!

Sylvia, Wonderful wonderful limerick to punctuate some of our discussions of late. What a fun episode this is, I like the ultimas capitulos when they flow cheap and easy!

Sara's anvil cart is being loaded from many sources, can't wait to see it roll down the hill. And Bruto should be mashed under its wheels too. Omar is an idiot and so so disappointing but if Zulema wakes up beautiful and remembering all the stupid stuff he has said to her during her coma, she can take care of his anvil cart.

Fafi is just fun because he is baiting Sara while he keeps saying as an aside that no one has ever made it to the altar with him. I wonder if the passports will become a trap, Fafi discussed the the 3 P's of travel and pasaporte was first and most important! Wonder if they will ever get to Australia?

Thanks for the recap Sylvia and the vocab list JudyB. Tonight should be fun.

Thanks for the funny recap..I am glad to see you totally supporting my favorite word. Reading this..lead me down the rabbit hole hee hee hee the AssBandit resurfaces...

Anyhow I have a observation...can someone tell me why Alonslow was wearing that much washed too tight white nipple shirt when he taught school? Egads...I worked with a guy who wore a shirt like that it had been just washed to death and was so thin, the buttons were so tight you were literally in danger of losing an eye if it popped one.

Someone said he was too poor to afford another...I beg to differ, thrift stores sell perfectly good ones for like $2.00 & this guy could have missed a meal and bought one. Same to you Alonslow

Ahoy, Cap'n Sylvia~~~~As always that was a great recap not to mention the extra information about eliminating assholes. [I don't think that you will get in trouble because the objectionable word if I remember correctly was ''ass''...there was no mention of any objection to ''asshole'' so I don't think that you have to worry. [By the way, someone posted that the poster objecting to the a-word was a troll. Is there a special cyber meaning for the t-word [troll] or was it just a comment about her personality , as in, ''You are such a troll.'' Do you think Fluffy is the same actor who played the poor soul married to Helena Rojas' character in Mundo de Fieras ??? Maybe he'll take Sara to Australia and leave her out back in the Outback....and she'll meet up with a crazed dingho. I wonder why the writers made a point of Torby knowing Fluffy Hefner and his Sidekick ??? That has to mean something otherwise why would they share this connection with us ??? And wow, Julian did a pretty fast turnaround after talking to his equally screwed up father Omar. I am ready to get that t-shirt [''Omar, you are dead to me''] now. What a loser. I hope Zully wakes up , meets a young hottie orderly, and kicks Omar out.

Troll is an internet term, yes. "Cindybin" is... well, someone else has already explained it in great detail:
http://www.cindysbeentrippin.com/blog/?page_id=95

As for the shirt, I know Julia did those great graphics last week - I think they make special paper for regular inkjet printers that you can print any graphic and then iron it onto any shirt!

Julie, thanks for that revealing information about the troll in our midst. Who knew? So interesting now that we know so much more, no?

Wow, Julie, I was blown away by the Cindybin info, since her (?) posts are still coming regularly to Jean's Telemundo blogs. I feel like an idiot for falling for it! But at least now it makes sense. :)

And on a positive note, our reward for making it through QE is going to be Las Tontas No Van Al Cielo. Yeah!

You're not an idiot. "Cindybin" spends a lot of time on "her" efforts. Evidently it is a labor of love. :-)

Julie~~~Thanks for the website. How odd the world of cyberspace is.

Wow, I had no idea about trolling! Must be nice to have so much spare time. I couldn't begin to imagine what that's like. Whatever, I'm not getting rid of my troll doll that I've had since the sixties, or my Santa Claus troll doll earrings that I wear for Christmas.

Margarita, I like your take on "Is Fafy a con man?". You make some excellent points, rarely are things just black and white.

Susanlynn, Fafy/Fafi/Fluffy is definitely the guy who played Rojas' husband in Mundoo.

I wonder what the guy Horty hired to ''get'' Sara is going to do now?...Will he follow her to Australia ? What terrible fate could await Bluto and Sara there? Crocodile Dundee ? Vegamite sandwiches? Kangeroos gone wild ? Hugh Jackman ? A lovesmitten koala bear ?

I hate to disagree Susalynn, but I would think meeting Hugh Jackman in the Outback would be a good thing ;) Vegemite sandwiches, not o much...

I'd gladly eat Vegemite if it meant meeting Hugh Jackman. Yum!

Great recap Cptn Sylvia, maybe we should have an a**hole free blog rule? And I loved the little poem.
About the Novela all I'm going to say is Ernesto and Lorena FOREVER!!
Judyb I love your vocab list, it is very accurate and complete, I just wanted to add that the dicho "no hay mal que dure cien años" has a second part. It's usually not said aloud because you are supposed to now it. The whole thing goes "no hay mal que dure cien años, ni tonto que lo aguante" What people is trying to tell you is that everything will pass or some how you will find a way of extract yourself from the situation because surely you are not a fool.
Julie who would have known… The article about trolls is very informative; I wonder what people get out of disrupting other people’s blogs, so they win when people answer their silly questions? I guess is just another way of getting attention and validating themselves. The question is now; if a troll posts a question and nobody answers it does it makes a noise?

Wow...never heard the second part of that dicho, Maricruz, thank you. Will have to write it down. Alas, if I don't, it just continues to "pass through" my brain and travel on.

I find the "troll mentality" to be very strange. I too had to look up "troll" when the commenter on Fuego talked about it. The last time I encountered trolls was reading fairy tales to my kids eons ago.

Does anyone remember the troll skit from Mad TV ??? She/he/it was working at The Gap.

I mentioned to my twenty-two year old daughter what happened here with the troll and she knew all about those. She said they just like to stir up trouble. I personally think they need to get a life!!!

I remember those troll dolls!!!! Weren't they called wishnicks then? I'ts hard to remember that far back! Do remember in the sixth grade that some kids had those little Beatles dolls. Bet they are worth a fortune now!

Also thank you for the vocabulary list!!!!

Sylvia, I’ve died and gone to heaven, your recap was a verdadero side-splitter!!!! I can’t remember when I’ve laughed so hard and I’m only through the title (awesome!) and the limerick (incredible!!). Thank you, thank you, and my apologies for responding so late! What a great night for that seminar! (I may have to use this website info at work even as soon as tomorrow….) Rugby? Our Cap’n Sharkbait? I picture you as 5’ barely, petite and NOT a rugby type. Will wonders never cease?!

“Jaime delivers criticism and bad news but he does it in a respectful manner, therefore Jaime = not an asshole.” LOL! Great assessment!

“here is what Fafy Cuenca world renowned playboy looked like in the 70's:” Yep, every bit as Fluffy back then.

“Tori runs into Santiago. I finally figured out who this guy reminds me of, Sean Penn!” Yep, exactly! The spooky part is that Santiago is at least two decades older, and probably three.

“Santiago recognizes Tori and reminds him they went to prep school together.” Well, of COURSE they did. The D. F. is just a small island, after all.

“Santi coos over Bettina and tells Tori even though he doesn't have a granddaughter his life is full. He's the lacky of Fafy Cuenca” ROTFLLLLL!!!!!

“Next scene is in a tacky-looking living room. Figures, it's Greta's. Her voice bugs me and her boobs are everywhere.” ROTFLLLL!! And the biggest boob in her house is Omar.

“Conveying bad news but doing so in a disrespectful, demeaning and accusatory way...Greta = asshole” ROTFL!!! Do we have a new scale in the making?
“Dad isn't home either. Is he working late? Where are the weak, unreliable men of the household?” LOL!

“Snorty before: made people feel demeaned, didn't recognize her own employees, was a tyrant over those less powerful = asshole. Snorty now = reformed asshole.” ROTFLLLLL!!!!

“Julian and Rossy make up and he promises to lay off the booze and look for work. Julian, realizing the world doesn't revolve around him = recovering asshole.” ROTFL!!

“She's happy and tells Toribio she's about to get promoted, she has more than 20 sellers under her, which is weird because I didn't know Paula knew 20 people. Whatever.” ROTFL!!

“Tori tells her he's nervous and he feels like he dropped Al off for his first day at kindergarten.” I have an odd sense of what’s great, but this was one of the greatest telenovela lines of all time for me. I just loved Toribio being so supportive of Slow.

Great vocab list, JudyB and Sylvia! Great comments, everyone!

Jeanne
