Doña Bárbara - Tues., May 18 - Over the river and through the woods, back to town DB goes
DB is running along the river where she starts to cry and has flashbacks to everything that happened. She tells herself that it's finally over.
DB gets back to El Miedo where she continues to cry. She says that she doesn't know why she is so sad. She has flashbacks of Eustaquia, Melquíades and Lorenzo. Juan Primito comes in and DB hugs him and cries.
DB has JP get her money out of the wall.
Santos tells Antonio what happened in the church. He says that he understands DB now and believes she was justified in what she did. He says that he feels sorry for her and wants to help her. This exchange: what DB did was horrible but she had a right to avenge what was done to her and she had guts to do what she did - we will call 'the conversation.'
Both Santos and Marisela head for El Miedo.
DB tells JP not to tell anyone where she went.
The Inspector sends men to search for DB and tells them to shoot her if she doesn't surrender.
Melesio and all the terneras except Genoveva have 'the conversation.' Marisela arrives and says that she is sad that she can't find DB to help her.
Pajarote, María Nieves and Cósme are chatting about what happened in the church and noting that Santos seems to want to protect DB when she appears looking for Santos. The police are arriving and the ternera men help her hide. Pajarote tells DB that they are helping DB because Santos is helping her.
The ternera men take DB to the river but there are men with dogs there. She jumps into the river. When the one-eyed alligator comes after her, Pajarote and MN kill it with Marisela, Santos, Antonio, Andrés, Genoveva and Altagracia watching.
DB escapes across the river but she starts to cry again. Melquíades' voice tells her to get up and find a hiding place.
Santos and Marisela find DB's horse with all her money.
All the guys celebrate the death of the one-eyed alligator and express admiration for DB's bravery in jumping into the alligator infested river. They think that DB is gone for good. They leave. Genoveva tells Santos that Marisela went to church to pray for her mother.
It turns out that having escaped from the ruined church in town, DB has returned to town and is hiding in the confessional in the active church.
Father Pernia and Genoveva have 'the conversation.' He tells Marisela to pray for her mother. Santos shows up. He and Marisela have 'the conversation.' DB is listening.

Gonzalo's been pretty quiet. Is a nasty little surprise in store for DB? If DB's going to die, I think she'll die protecting Marisela so it will be a form of redemption for her.
This is where I part ways with how the telenovela is written. Saying that DB was 'justified' in killing anyone she felt like because something horrible happened to her, doesn't cut it. Oh, and that she had the 'guts' to kill and 'avenge' doesn't fly either. What about the poor saps that got in the way? What about the stealing, beating and other sick things she did? Not to mention, DB isn't even repentant...

I thought she had a mystical connection with El Tuerto del Bramador, but maybe he would have eaten her without a qualm if Pajarote and Maria Nieves hadn't killed it. Or maybe the mystical connection was in the book. Sometimes I mix up which minor detail was in which book.
By the way, Santos shooting someone in the head (in the book) was Melquiades. I haven't finished the book yet, so don't know if it will turn out the same, in that Pajarote really killed him. Thought I might as well post this since M is dead, and there's only three more episodes of the TN to go.
DB sends Melquiades to a spot at moonrise. M says he'll bring Santos back either alive or dead. When M approaches Santos on horseback, Santos doesn't trust him, knowing his reputation as a killer (he's even worse in the book) and watches him closely. He sees the glint of a firearm from where M is, and Santos shoots first. He then brings the body back to El Miedo across M's horse.
The book hints at DB's reasoning. Either outcome would have served her purpose. She's angry at Santos for having accused her of stealing the egret feathers and killing Carmelito (something Balbino Paiba did without telling her). So part of her would have been OK with Santos dying. And she thinks Melquiades knows too much. He's not in love with her in the book. If Santos kills M, then she gets rid of a witness and brings Santos closer to the "barbarie" which is where she wants him to be.

Our Spanish teacher thinks Antonio is the voice of Romulo Gallegos in the novel. When Santos leans a bit toward violence after Carmelito's death, Antonio is worried and wants him to return to the "civilized man" he was. Antonio now accepts that Santos' ideas are the way of the future. He disagrees with the other peons who are happy when Santos appears ready to exact vengeance.
