Warning: do not visit Univision.com, you can get a really bad computer virus there...

Hi all,

I thought it was just my own bad luck that a visit to Univision.com landed me with a horrible hard-to-eradicate computer virus which called itself "Internet Security Essentials" and locked up my monitor with frozen warnings of doom if I didn't buy "protection" (like the Mafia protects us).

But today my computer guy told me he has a bunch of Mexican customers who have brought in their locked-up computers with same problem, a computer virus gotten at http://univision.com.

The computer tech says it's not univision's fault, somehow their site has been invaded from elsewhere - they don't mean to be giving us computer worms - but till they get it fixed it is NOT A SAFE SITE.

Anybody else had this problem?

We keep getting warnings that a virus is trying to invade our computer (our son has installed a security system) and he thinks it's coming from CarayCaray because as soon as I logged in to CarayCaray on my new laptop, we got another virus warning.

Unfortunately I have to disable the security system to "tag" my recaps or other people's recaps. So the viruses keep coming but our system is protected, as far as I know.

JudyB - I'm not getting virus warnings when I visit Caray Caray, and scan every other night, so it might be when you disable for tags that something is getting into your system.

Melinama - I have not visited Uni's site in ages, and remember when you got that first virus/worm not very long ago. Thank you for the warning.

Hopefully MacAfee will keep my 'puter safe.

Wow. I was thinking about heading over to Univision. Glad I stopped here first. Thanks for telling us Melinama.

I've been having computer problems i was on univision last week checking for updates on what's going on with WL. I guess i wasn't on there long enough to acquire a virus. Since then loading up watching on youtube or sites i used became a problem. I used my recovery disc and downloaded all the programs i had on my laptop again. Thanks for the important information.

About a month ago my laptop was infected with a virus, same deal as Melinama's security warnings, etc., and it took us hours and hours to get rid of it, at least I hope it's gone. I didn't know where it came from but I had logged onto Univision for something. After Melinama's original warning I have not been back on their site.

I haven't had any problems with logging onto Caray, Caray.

On occasion, when logging in here, I get bumped to the Gateway search site, but it's an intermittent problem. I can't even remember the last time it happend.

I think someone has hacked onto the Univision site. This must have been a black hat attack. A few of the forums that I visited had been down for a few weeks because of that and they also had to migrate to new servers.

I'd been hesitant to go there since your first warning but like a fool I went there 2 weeks ago and then my nephew came over and went on some music sites and the next day I had a virus repeatedly asking me to get an anti-virus program. I blamed my nephew's sites but now I think it was probably the Univision site. It took me over 4 hours to get rid of it after running countless virus programs. still not sure its permanently gone but it hasn't been popping up any longer. HARD lesson learned!!

cubsfan, that is exactly the one I got.

OUCH! Wonder if that affects Macs? Also wonder if Univision just put it in to avoid complaints we make about time switches and caption problems? (Es broma, mi gente, es broma).

Ibarramedia, what is a "black hat attack?

My computer has all of a sudden gone black & off for about a month now. I have to restart, fix problems, very aggravating. I go to Univision quite often, so maybe that's the answer.
Tks for the warning.

When I had technical problems several weeks ago, that is what happened, as I was watching the tv while typing, I must have clicked on whatever to download software in response to those messages.

My computer was unusable. Instead of doing my recap I was trying to get rid of the virus. I ended up having to format and reinstall everything.

I know I had a couple of spanish dictionaries opened, blogger, and possibly esmas.

I went to the Univision site today to try to find out how many episodes the last day of Sortilegio will include (answer: one). When I did so, I hadn't yet read your warning, Melinama, nor the responses from others who had similar experiences. I nervously scanned my computer with both Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware. Both scans came up clean. I don't know whether that means the threat has passed or I was just lucky.

serendipity ---- I've been to the esmas and televisa sites several times in the past month and have had no problems. (keeping my fingers crossed for luck, too!) I don't think it's esmas.

Thanks for the warning even though I wouldn't dream of not having viral protection on my computers. I don't even trust the free programs. Also don't want to take a chance of passing along a virus or worm to people in my address book. The feeling of security outweighs the cost.

Jeanne, This will better explain what that is.

Anonymous 10:02, I have (and had) a virus program, updated and all - this virus got past it.

Ibarramedia - I use Firefox. The article refers to IE. Firefox has been historically safer, but the hackers are now starting to target it as well. Any thoughts?

I use Firefox. I know if I hadn't accidently clicked while typing I would have diverted disaster.

Doris, those Black hat hackers are still able to infiltrate websites no matter what the browser, it could be firefox mozilla or safari and it would make no difference. It attacked a few forums that I participate in and the admin told me that is also had mass spamming from it.

Ibarramedia I confirm the info you gave Doris re. virus entering regardless of browser since I use FireFox and still got the virus I described in my post at Mon Feb 15, 10:44:00 PM EST.

thanks
rebecca

Ditto. Please let us know when Mi Pecado is coming & what channel. THANKS.

I recently got blocked from sending emails to certain clients because all of a sudden my IP was blacklisted due to spamming, which I have never done. Now that you guys are talking about this, I am thinking it may just be because of visits to one these sites-- caraycaray OR Univision. Wish I had read this before visiting Univision today.

Ibarramedia, thanks! I forgot to check in again after I posted that. I will be watching for it.

Jeanne
