Dinero Monday August 16, 2010 Marino and Ramirez Get Lucky But Nobody Else Does

Tonight was a strange mixture of pathos, broad humor, slapstick and nail-biting tension. As much as I loathe Vicky, I found myself feeling quite sorry for her tonight. Lying beautifully silent, almost catatonic, still in her white wedding garb, we could appreciate her physical loveliness and get a much-needed break from her manipulative screeching. I felt even sorrier for Don Gaston, baffled and disillusioned by the machinations of his daughter but still loving her with all his heart. Daughter, he explains haltingly, I had to cancel the wedding. Without love and trust, a marriage is doomed. Vicky doesn't see it that way and as he turns off the light and starts to leave, we see a flash of the old Vicky as she makes a wicked nasty face. I fear Rafa's troubles with VVV are not over.

His troubles at work, however, seem to be resolving. Doña Arcadia, along with Beltran, has summoned him to the royal chambers in order to offer him his job back. But Alejandra has to go. Rafa protests. The Queen laughs. You're completely predictable, she chuckles, we knew you'd say that....so here's the deal. If you get Alejandra to come back WITH Susana, then you'll have a job. But we need all three of you....especially Susana for her wonderful massages. Once that's settled, Beltran wants the 411 on the cancellation of the wedding and Rafa mumbles something about having goals he needs to reach before taking a step like that. Doña Arcadia, who knows a lot more, wisely keeps mum.

Now if only Jaime would! His hysterical high-speed tirades are in full evidence tonight. I think I'd prefer he choose the comatose route like Vicky, but no such luck. A torrent of blather and apologies greet Leonor when she opens the door to his frantic knocks. She finally calls a halt and tells him she might be able to hear him out another day. But tonight, no. She's too hurt, too devastated. In the background, we see Julieta, her tear-stained face bearing the same message. You sent him packing didn't you, ma? Indeed.

The last scene before our first round of ads is Rafa, firming up the meeting with Don Romulo tomorrow to deliver the trucks. And then musing over his last encounter with Ale. She wished him luck in his wedding and he had it...no wedding! Now if only he could wish her the same kind of luck so she would fail to marry Marco.

Now we're at Marco's and the telephone rings. It's Jorge. No problem. There was a storm, knocked out all communication but all is well now. Sorry he won't be at the civil wedding but he'll be praying for them both. And no way will he miss the religious ceremony. Marco goes in for a big hug, Ale turns her face away and looks sad, but she clings to him nevertheless.

Auto Siglo looks like a morgue, especially with only our miserable Dandy at the desk. All the rest of the sales staff is at the Trancaso celebrating Rafa's non-wedding. No matter. Rafa now has another "mission" for Dandy. One more time, he has to get Susana to listen to him. Not only that but he must persuade her to come back to work. He doubts he'll make any headway but Rafa packs him off with a "Echale mi matador" (Go for it bullfighter). And he does.

Rafa is not so lucky when he tries to contact a hungover Ale, slumped over her alka-seltzer. Once she finally locates her ringing cellphone she refuses to answer. Furthermore, no matter who calls, she's not "not at home". Got it, everybody? And with that she staggers off to the bedroom, leaving our nefarious Marco to muse "Would she still want to marry me if she knew Medina's wedding didn't come off?"

Well, the wedding scandal provides a great source of entertainment for the sales staff. They're tippling tequilas, musing about Jaime's tryst with Vicky, making fun of Rosaura as usual for her "everything's better in the US" BS, and she in turn is artfully dodging the clumsy seduction attempts of Pepeto.

Just before the next set of ads, we see Rafa leaving work, only to stumble over an hysterical Jaime, now on his second round of frenetic apologies. ( Someone give this guy a quaalude please!) Here's the short version: He didn't want to hurt Rafa or Julieta. Vicky was blackmailing him. He couldn't say anything because her brothers would have killed him. She got him drunk. (I suppose she raped you too, snaps Rafa). Well no, but remember, you stood her up at the hotel and I went to explain why you couldn't come. She was wearing a rather attractive negligée. The champagne was flowing....

And you fell for it like a chump, concludes Rafa. Jaime switches from hysteria to assault, trying to kiss Rafa as he shrieks that he's his only friend in the whole world. Rafa brushes him off. Are you gay or what? (¿volviendo del otro bando?) I'll never forgive you for what you did to Julieta. (We know these two friends will make up eventually. But clearly it won't be tonight.)

So what about Susana and Dandy? Well, not tonight either. He camps outside her doorstep, rousing the ire of a neighbor with his knocking and his shouts. Susana sneaks in during a moment when he closes his eyes. He ends up spending the night crouched outside her door and only gets in when the same neighbor, taking pity on him, pretends to ask for a cup of sugar the next day. Instead of sugar, she gets Dandy. And now there's hope. (But first he has to sprint to her bathroom, poor devil.)

All right, you know who really breaks my heart? Don Gaston. He's not happy with any of his kids and I don't blame him. The boys are buffoons with serious anger management problems.. Vicky is clearly unbalanced. "What sin have I committed?" he sighs, "if only one were normal!" (Fella, I feel your pain. Believe me. Wanna start a Parents of Adult Children support group? I could use one.)

Back at the Trancaso, the non-wedding party is breaking up. Ramirez is off to see his married lady (after fending off a lot of snide insinuations about him and Marino); Bebe is heading for home before his dear wife gets worried, and the rest of the crew are musing about Marino's latest "victim" and whether there will soon be a tenth fatherless child in the neighborhood.

So where do we go next? You got it. Marino's bed which has evidently just seen a lot of action. She's gushing about his prowess, he's angling for a back rub. But whoops he lets out the secret that he's hoping he's engendered a girl child after all those boys. WHAT!? YOU HAVE KIDS!? YOU'RE LIKE ALL THE REST, YOU LIED TO ME!!! Nope, he didn't. He never say he DID NOT have kids. So okay, he has a couple. She tries to throw him out. He reminds her it's his bedroom so she has to go. Except he has other plans. A tussle, a forced kiss....which turns passionate. She wraps herself around him again. Baby girl launch no. 2 is about to begin. Thankfully the scene ends. This I don't want to see.

Don't much want to see Ramirez checking his breath outside his paramour's door either. But I do. Door opens. Breathless and surprise redhead answers. She gets a present and some sweet nothings, followed by "Is Edgar Jr. asleep?" "Does that mean.....you want to spend the night?" More ardent trembling. " Then I'm your woman!" (Don't really get Ramirez' charm but I guess in comparison to Marino, any man looks good) Anyway, clearly our pompous mama's boy going to be as well served as his erstwhile roommate tonight.

The goofy cartoon tells us that night has passed and morning has dawned. Yes, it's the day we've all been dreading, including Alejandra. The third go at a wedding. Hers.

Rosario is looking like spiffy, in a silky forest green top and very successful makeup. Even odious Quintana seems charmed, and hovers in for a "When this is over, we must start planning our own wedding, darling". Blech. Marco is also looking quite natty in his well-tailored suit. And Ale? As Rosario notes, she looks like she's headed for a firing squad (al parédon) rather than to a wedding. Figure it out, Tia!

Well, Susana, at least, IS beginning to figure it out....or at least to listen to Dandy. He's explaining that the wedding was cancelled. True, Rafa didn't back out. It was Vicky's dad that called a halt. But Rafa doesn't love Vicky. He DOES love Alejandra. And we've got to let her know he didn't get married. Susana tries the cellphone. But it's turned off. Then call the apartment! She does. And we hear the fatal phone ringing and ringing right after Alejandra sallies forth, slamming the door shut.

OH NOOOOOOO!!!!!!. And there the episode ends.

Previews"
Marian, looking lovely with her collagen-plumped lips, is musing that today Rafa loses his love Alejandra to her wedding. Sooooo sad. (Not!)
We see Ale, looking fabulous in a pale pink dress, about to say her vows.
But here comes the Pantera and Rafa! Will he stop the wedding in time? Stay tuned.

Vocabulary:
regar en tus macetas = lit. to water in your pots. fig. to dip your wick ( The sales crew discussing Jaime's alleged cheating with Rafa's girl)
pelizcadó el pastel = lit. nibbled at the cake fig. same meaning as above
echale mi matador = go for it, bullfighter!
volviendo del otro bando fig. playing in the other ballpark, being gay
como un niño caiste = fell for it like a chump
erroes no se corrigen con mentiras = mistakes aren't fixed by lies (Rafa to Jaime)
reverenda estupidez = utter, absolute stupidity! (Jaime, admitting his mistake)
animalada = an outrage, outrageous (more Jaime confessions)

eso no se hace = that sort of thing isn't done (Leonor remonstrating with Jaime)
¿le mandaste a volar? = did you send him packing? (Julieta to Leonor)
parédon = can mean wall or rock, but in this case, "firing squad" (the look on Ale's face the day of her wedding to Marco)

Dicho of the Day

I'm just going to give you a couple of expressions....they're not actually dichos, per se.

"apenas a tiempo" in the nick of time Will Rafa get there before she says "I do"?
un puñalada trapera" a stab in the back A perfect way to describe Jaime's actions. But at least he stopped the wedding in time.
un cuento chino = a cock and bull story Just about anything that comes out of Marco's mouth
lobo con piel de oveja = a wolf in sheep's clothing Marco, Chavez, Marino . Probably Quintana. And Pepeto? Can't decide.

And that's it for tonight folks. Enjoy.

As always a great and funny recap.
Seems like Susana is finally coming around. From the looks of the last scene it may be too late.
Rafa might not make it in time with his Pantera. He has to close the truck deal and get back in time to stop the wedding.
Anybody willing to bet that the Pantera breaks down at the worst possible moment? Plus Rafa will be carrying around a lot of cash! Anybody remembers all the worry the last time he had so much money on him?
Since I said it before I am going to stick by it: Ale will get married. Though I would much prefer if she didn't.
So it seems I will have to recap a pretty sad episode (if Ale gets married). Definitely Not looking forward to tomorrow.
Signing off... Private 057

Thanks for the excellent recap Judy! I completely agree with you about the Marino bedroom scene. That is not something I needed to see.

I was yelling at the tv tonight for Ale to answer her phone! Why would Rafa be calling if he had gotten married? Think Ale!

I'm so glad Susana is starting to come around and listening to Dandy. Hopefully they're on the way to getting back together. Too bad she was a couple seconds too late calling Ale though.

There's a lot of suspense going into tomorrow night's episode. Go Rafita! Stop that wedding!

Good morning Tracie and Private 057. Dinero is certainly great at ratcheting up the tension to an almost unbearable pitch. I guess I'm more worried about Rafa losing all that cash than I am about him being too late for the wedding.

Well, Private...we'll see if you get a bummer episode or not. Must say Ale looks smashing in that pink ensemble so at least us fashionistas can find something to enjoy.

And yes, the writers have thrown us a bone....at least Susana and Dandy are now talking.

You guys had to mention the money. I had forgotten all about that with everything else going on. Oh my goodness Judy, talk about ratcheting up the tension.

And Judy, I said it before, or maybe it was someone else, you have the best writing style. Your thoughts flow into this incredible story of words. The recap was outstanding. Every part was my favorite part. Your introduction was great. It certainly was "a strange mixture of pathos, broad humor, slapstick and nail-biting tension."

Say did anyone see Cristina last night? Doña Arcadia and Marco were both guests. Along with the leads from Don Querendon and their little daughter. They even had a little skit with Marco and Chavez.
It was fun.

Again thank you Judy for putting such spark, fun and emotion into last night's episode. I feel sorry for Poor Don Gaston as well. That is one goofy family.

Judy, I loved your recap. You captured the drama, the sadnesss, and the regret perfectly. From "torrent of blather and apologies" to "hysterical high-speed tirades" this was indeed a "frenetic" episode. Masterfully done. This was my absolute favorite vocabulary list and gifting us with several extra dichos/expressions was an added treat.

To your question regarding "nefarious Mario": muse "Would she still want to marry me if she knew Medina's wedding didn't come off?"
I answer a resounding no! Let's hope Ale realizes she doesn't want to marry Mario in any event - whether Rafa is married or not.

I like Don Gaston and my heart goes out to both he and Julieta.

Diana

Good morning Pata and Diana. Thanks for those incredibly nice words. Great way to start my morning.

As a parent, I really resonate with Don Gaston's anguish. When he mused that Vicky really needed her mother to still be alive to help her deal with this heartbreak, I almost cried. He is so baffled by her behavior. At least with the boys, he can give them a couple of swats upside the head and it's over.

Have a great day at work you two. I'm headed off to teach class.

What a well written, flowing story, Judy. I admire yet envy your skill. The description of Don Gaston, "baffled and disillusioned by the machinations of his daughter but still loving her with all his heart" cut straight to the most poignant scene of the night. I wonder how our show will end for him.

The vocabulary and dichos were particularly excellent this recap. Looks like it was a lot of work, but it seems to have several phrases which appear useful in telenovela and real life.

I actually thought Ale was going to answer the phone when Susana called the house on the second try. But she didn't--and she threw her cellphone on the table. Say it again, OH NOOOOOO!

Judy- Another fantastic recap amiga. Thank you. :) I also felt sorry for Don Gaston. He was so understanding with Vicky. He even said that he didn't know if she lost the baby or got rid of it, or was never pregnant, but no matter what he was here for her and loved her. That's pretty darn understanding for a traditional Mexican father! He was doing and saying all the right things. I wish Vicky could have really heard him. His heart is breaking for her.

Like you, I'm more concerned that Rafa gets and delivers the money, than that he stops Ale's wedding. She does look smashing in that preview dress. I almost want her to get married so that Marco lets some of his real character slip out and she starts to realize who he really is and what a huge mistake she made. I'm also glad Susana and Dandy are talking. I hope he tells her ALL.

Good morning to everyone!
Jusy forgot to add my thoughts on Marino and Ramirez.
I definitely could have skipped the Marino scene, but the Ramirez scene was better only because Marino is getting betrayed by his best friend.
Just a small warning and disclaimer: if Ale does get married tonight the recap might get delayed while I take up the courage to write it.
Signing off... Private 057

Dr. Judy, your recap is such a treat this morning. Although this was a rather somber episode, you managed to tart it up nicely with your exquisite wit and good humor, not to mention your journalistic prowess. I always look forward to my dose of Judy each Tuesday.

Don Gaston was so lovable with his quiet expression of confusion, sweetly buffered with affection and fatherly understanding. How wonderful seeing an outwardly and seemingly emotionally clumsy man express such love for his daughter. Made me tear up a bit. Of course Vicki played perfectly the wounded, spoiled, and slightly unstable bride.

Nelson and Suzy are definitely righting their relationship. Good for them, reunited by a common purpose... salvaging the bond between our lovable, but undeniably high maintenance couple. Good luck with that.

For me, Sandra's attractiveness has taken a dive. Does she have cotton candy for brains?

As noted already by Diana and Barbara, the vocabulary today was special.

Carlos

Judy, Judy, Judy! Great work!

I am sad to say that I too feel that something is going to happen to our poor Rafa, I hope it is that he is just late for the wedding. I also agree that maybe if Ale and Marco marry that maybe that is truly when she will start seeing the real Marco

Good morning Dinero gang. Back from class, in need of a shower but wanted to check back with you all first.

@Barbara, like you, I'm always looking for phrases I can use. Mind you "regar en tu maceta" is not one of them but it was too juicy to pass up. Ditto for "pellizcar el pastel".

"Pellizcarz" can also mean "pinch" but in this case it's translated as "nibble". Fun stuff.

@Vivi and Carlos. Hearing Don Gaston's words gave me new respect for the actor....and the writers. The scene was beautifully played and written. And we all agree, very poignant. There is nothing worse than seeing your hopes and dreams for a child turn to dust as they self defeat over and over again. Helpless and heartbroken. But I'm sure Miss Vicky will rise from the ashes!

@ Private 057 and Kat in Alabama....yep, lots of tension about tonight's episode, but good call that the marriage might be a plus as it will open Ale's eyes to the true Marco. Vivi noted this as well. And besides it will give Marian new hope as well!

Private, I'm sure you can gird your loins, muster your courage and grit your teeth and slam that recap out in record time. THEN you can go drown your sorrows. I'll join you.

@Carlos...I'm with you. The most disgusting part about the bed scene with Marino was how quickly Sandra felt back under his greasy spell. Blech and double blech!

Carlos- Somehow I think Sandra will be the one to have the last laugh on Marino. I sense some instability there. Her ex seemed pretty enraged, and she seemed to have a bit of the dominatrix in her in bed. At least I hope she turns into an crazy/evil domineering harpy that Marino can't get rid of. Maybe that's just my little fantasy.

I enjoy Ramirez's interaction with the redhead. He is still his long-winded self, but she just loves it! For every pot, a lid.

My question/confusion is this, all of Marino's exs are called his ex wives. But it doesn't seem that he married any of them. They're all just his baby-mamas. Are people just calling them his wives because they had a child by him? Is it the sex or the child? I ask also because last night someone at the Trancazo said that Rafa was lucky not to marry that Senorita, and then I think Jimenez said, well she's not really a Senorita any more- alluding to the sex and/or pregnancy with Jaime. So having sex/getting pregnant automatically makes a woman into a senora?

And why can't Ramirez get invloved with one of Marino's exs? It's not like they're together anymore. They're not married. She's not having an affair. The only problem is that Marino is his friend and that ick factor is there in two friends having slept with the same person. But Ramirez keeps saying he's seeing a married woman, which is not the case. She's a single mom, free to be with who she wishes.

Hola Vivi. Thanks for bringing up the confusion around "mujer" and "señorita" etc. I thought maybe I had missed something because I opted out of the earlier chapters.

Here's one possibility. Marino didn't marry any of them but they're all his "mujeres" because he made them his and he pays them child support, pittance though it may be.

Or maybe he only married the first one, the mother of his son Edgar Jr., whom Ramirez is bedding, and never bothered to divorce her. Hence she is still legally his wife, even though he has a raft of concubines and progeny after her.

And since "mujer" can mean both woman and wife, it's all very confusing linguistically as well.

Theoretically, I think Señorita meant unmarried AND a virgin in the long ago and far away. Though that assumption no longer applies in modern life, it can still make for a snide joke. But Vicky doesn't automatically become a señora unless she's legally wed. Right? Which reminds me of how in ENDA the wicked aunt kept reminding everyone to call her "señorita" emphasizing her righteous, virginal state (apart from all those righteous murders!).

Finally, love your "for every pot a lid". What a sweet way of saying it. You're such a romantic!

Thanks for another breezy and fun recap, Judy.

I agree with everything everyone said, especially Private 057 and Vivi. I'm going to have to comment earlier to get any original thoughts in!

Okay, I thought of something. How come when Ale's phone is turned off, you can't leave a message? It just says out of area or something. I thought if you've set up voice mail, callers would normally be able to leave messages if the phone is off. Certainly Marco's apartment isn't far enough from Rafa's house to be "out of area". I was thinking he could send her a text, or leave a message that the wedding didn't happen. I'm not too up on the technical side of phones, but is this realistic, or are they just making the call impossible for the purpose of the story?

@Hombre. Good one. Used to be, people wouldn't have cell phones so all kinds of icky plot devices could simmer. Now that they have to recognize the ubiquity of these phones, they throw in "out of area or turned off". But if it's just turned off, you CAN leave a message. And of course, any business person would have the voice mailbox option. As aged dorks, my husband and I have ultracheap cell phones that can't "text" but we can receive text messages (at a price). The only time I have ever encounterd an "out of area" message was one time when I was trying to call someone in France!

These dang writers just want to ratchet up our anxiety and raise our blood pressure. No fair!

Judy- This is definitely a case where the historical meaning of a word is coming up against the changing modern meaning.

In the past senorita equaled unmarried female virgin (is there any other kind but a female?...).
In the present senorita equals unmarried woman.
In the past novia/novio meant a serious relationship with intent to marry, also equals bride and groom.
In the present novia/novio mainly means the person you are dating seriously, not necessarily intending to marry, but much of the old meaning remains. Now prometido is being used more often, like we use fiancé, to clear up some confusion.

There does still seem to be a distinction in the mind though that a novio/novia is something serious. When watching the Cristina show for Mi Pecado the other week, Maite Perroni made a distinction between the three months she and her current boyfriend were just dating each other, and the month they had officially been novios.

Totally enjoyed Judy. Thanks a bunch.

I also felt so sorry for Don Gatson last night. He certainly has a house full of crazies. After that face VVV gave I am sure she is not through with Rafa.

PLEASE don't let Ali marry Marco. And PLEASE don't let someone steal Rafa's money. Haven't these people ever heard of checks. Makes me crazy.

Marino just plain makes me sick. GAG

I am SOOOOO happy thought that it looks like Dandy and Susana are going to get back together. The guys needs Susana in their court and should have included her from day one.

@ Vivi..I noticed that tooie., what Maite said. "Novio" reminds me a bit of what passed for "getting pinned" in college (mind you, this was back in the late 50's early 60's.) You dated. If if got serious, you became pinned (his fraternity pin), or you might get his football championship ring or something to wear on a chain. If it really got serious, you were engaged. Sum total, there were visible signs of commitment. "Novios" I presume is just an announcement to one's friend's, without any jewelry involved. But in these days of casual hookups, I see there are still regular gradations of involvement that are being observed.

Hi there Lynda. Your comment posted while I was replying to Vivi.

Glad to see you get as emotionally involved as I do in these crazy tales. From time to time I make solemn promises to stop watching because the tension makes me crazy.

But I'm crazy anyway, and at least this way I'm learning Spanish. But glad I have a fellow nail biter in the virtual family room....as well as a fellow gagger whenever Marino's on the screen.

Good point that the fellows should have included Susana from the beginning. So what if it would have shortened the telenovela...since I had extensions, that would have been just fine with me.
