El Clon Thursday September 30: Summary for Discussion

Capítulo 161: In which Paula is The Wolf at the Door; The Naz wrangles the Odaliscas; and Natalia and Daniel discover they are soulmates.

When the doctor leaves, Marisa goes to her daughter’s bedside. Natalia turns on her: ¿Qué haces aquí? Vete. (What are you doing here? Go away!) I don’t want anyone here. ¡Que se mueren todos! (Drop dead, all of you!)
A stricken Marisa flashes back to an image of a woman in a hospital bed. The woman thrashes violently as two attendants hold her down, and give her an injection. She is screaming: ¡Suéltenme! Lárguense! Marisa, ven! (Let go of me! Get out of here! Marisa, come!) We see a little girl crouching on the floor outside the room, her face buried in her hands. And we see the adult Marisa sink down and cover her ears with her hands.

At Gloria’s, they are frustrated that the police haven’t caught Paula. And when they do find her, she’ll have ‘inhaled’ all the money she stole. Ramón is still a wreck. When Pedro touches him on the shoulder, he jumps and tells him not to come up behind him.

Yes, Paula is very much on the loose, on the prowl like a wounded wolf. And right now the wolf is at the door of the Casa Ferrer screaming Natalia’s name, struggling violently with the guards, while Marisa and Rosa look on. Close the windows, and the curtains says Marisa so Natalia can’t hear her. I don’t understand why this is happening!

Andrea goes to Gloria’s and tells Alejandro that Nati has lost the baby.

Rosa tells Marisa that Alej called and he knows about the miscarriage. Rosa told the truth: that Nati is sleeping because of a sedative the doctor gave her. And what about Leo and Lucas? asks Marisa. They’re sleeping too. Marisa will keep vigil in case Natalia needs something in the night.

At the clinic, Albieri shows Luisa Jade’s necklace and tells her he’s going to return it to its owner.

Julio comes in with some news: The Medical Board has refused to hear Silvia’s complaint. Villegas doesn’t believe the clone story and thinks he’ll look like a fool if it’s made public. Instead of being relieved, Albieri is outraged. He wants his great deed acknowledged. And he suspects that Villegas really does believe him and is denying him his glory. Luisa and Julio try to convince him that Silvia’s complaint would send him straight to jail and would make Daniel’s life miserable.

Or should I say more miserable. Daniel is reading all about Dolly. He tells Estela that the normal life span of a sheep is eleven or twelve years but Dolly died at six. They think it’s because she was cloned from a six-year-old animal. Since Lucas was twenty when Daniel was cloned, he will probably die young too: Es como si me hubieran robado veinte años de mi vida. (It’s as if they had stolen twenty years of my life.) But Estela continues to dismiss the clone story: A ti te cuentan un cuento chino! (They’re telling you a lie/a tall tale).

Dora comes in all dressed up and ready to go see the lawyer with Daniel.

Albieri shows up at Said’s house looking for Jade. As Said looks on suspiciously, Albi says: Yo vine para hacerte entrega… (I came to deliver to you…) Jade is delighted: Mi collar!
You lost it in Fez, right? says Albieri. But how did you happen to get hold of it? presses Said. Albieri has the good sense to fib and say that Luisa found it and realized it was Jade’s.

The kids have been squabbling again. Jadiya was in Rania’s room trying on her veils in front of her mirror and now Rania is like all mad and stuff, helloooo. When Said walks in, Jade has also joined the quarrel. Enter The Naz Triumphant. Said says to his sister: La casa queda bajo tus ordenes! (The house is under your orders/you’re in charge). He is going to Chicago for a day. Jade and Rania glare at one another.

Dora and Daniel are meeting their attorney, Cecilia, at Cris’s apartment. Cecilia starts to explain Leo’s intentions in his demand…

Leo, for his part, is telling Lucas that he isn’t ready to proceed right now. He doesn’t want to hurt Daniel or Albieri and he’s still too heartsick about Natalia to think about the suit. But he’s not too heartsick to blame Lucas and Marisa for Natalia’s problems. Lucas tells him that if Leo does proceed with a demand against Dora, he will lodge a counterdemand against Leo. Do it, says Leo.

Lucas asks Enrique to prepare that counterdemand.

Cecilia, back at Cris’s apartment, explains that if Leo goes forward with his suit, Daniel would have to talk to the judge and Albieri would go to jail.

Lucas tells Enrique that Daniel is not Leo's son: Ese muchacho nació de mí, de una célula mía; eso quiere decir que es una copia. (That boy was born from me, from a cell of mine; that means he’s a copy.). That’s arguable, says Enrique. And, he says, I’m in a difficult ethical position here. Well if you can’t be my attorney, says Lucas, find me someone really good. Enrique promises to call him.

As soon as Lucas leaves, Enrique calls Roberto. TWLIM (the worst lawyer in Miami) has to interrupt his golf game to take the call. Enrique explains his dilemma. Even though Roberto’s name is on the document Leo is filing, he, Enrique, actually wrote it. If Enrique takes on Lucas’s case, he can’t continue advising Roberto. That would be like arguing against himself. Roberto is alarmed. He may be a lightweight, but he does know his own limitations. You can’t abandon me! he says.

Pablo may not be completely brain dead. He tells his gym buddies, Alejandro and Pedro, that if what Diana told him about Malicia’s trip is true, she’s history.

At the Clinic, Escobar explains to Anita and Luisa that Fernando is at home and Clara is keeping watch over him. They researched rehab facilities and the good ones are too expensive for them. They don't even have anything left to sell to raise the money...

Caro is home with Clara. Clara goes to see if the paper has come and finds, instead, the wolf is at her door: Paula.

Natalia wakes from her sedated sleep and asks her mother to repeat what the doctor said. With some reluctance, Marisa says:
El médico me dijo que habías perdido tu bebé por las drogas que habiás consumido antes y durante el embarazo.
(The doctor told me that you had lost your baby because of the drugs you had used before and during the pregnancy.)
You mean I can’t have children? asks Natalia. No, Marisa corrects her, but if you continue using drugs, the same thing is likely to happen again.

Rosa greets Daniel happily when he arrives at Casa Ferrer. He’s glad to see her too. As he says: Es mejor ser visto como un espíritu que como un fenómeno. (It’s better to be seen as a spirit than a freak.) She invites him up to Natalia’s room so he can visit his “sobrina” (niece).

Rosa introduces Daniel to Natalia: Es tu tío Diego reincarnado…igualito como era él.
(It’s your uncle Diego reincarnated... he looks exactly like him.) And he knew you when you were a little girl.

Daniel acknowledges that he told Rosa he used to have a friend named Natalia. Marisa insists it must have been some other Natalia. But he’s identical to my father, says Natalia, wonderingly. Marisa leaves in disgust.

Natalia finally seems to be perking up. She says that when she heard about what Albieri had done, she thought it was a joke. Are you afraid of me? asks Daniel. No, says Nati, sit down.
Daniel tells her: Es que la gente dice que yo soy un clon… (It’s that people say I’m a clone.)
And I don’t like it, he says, it scares me. I’m afraid of dying.
Me too, says Natalia. Daniel says everyone looks at him as if he were a freak. I don’t belong to this world, he tells her. (No pertenezco a este mundo.) Me too, she says. I don’t belong to this world either.

The wolf, AKA Paula, forces her way into Clara’s house, plops on the sofa and falls into a dead sleep. Clara is afraid to call the police because they’ll probably arrest Fernando too. And she can’t go to work and leave the house unguarded – there will be nothing left when she comes back. Call Escobar, says Caro.

Enrique to therapist: I started with marijuana, went on to cocaine. And with cocaine, I felt like God…I felt like I was holding God in my hands. And in a very short time, my life had become a nightmare.

Escobar brushes off Clara’s concerns: He can’t leave work. Take care of it yourself. It’s your problem for letting a stranger in the house. I’ll come by after work and talk to Fernando.

Then Escobar turns to Anita and grouses about Clara’s expecting him to interrupt his workday. She must have a real problem, says Anita. Well Fernando didn’t have these kinds of issues when he was living there, he says. Esto demuestra que Clara es un fracaso como mamá! (This shows that Clara is a failure as a mother!)

At Empresas Ferrer, Leo asks Caro where Clara is. Caro tries to cover for her friend saying she was in earlier but felt ill and had to go to the doctor.

Roberto and Enrique continue their conversation in person. Enrique insists he can’t advocate for two opposing sides. Roberto again begs him not to abandon him. The phone rings. It’s Leo asking Enrique to come to his office.

I suppose Lucas asked you to recommend a lawyer, says Leo. No, answers Enrique, he wanted to hire me. Enrique catches Leo smiling at the thought and he is furious. He tells Leo: You’re so smart! You think you hired the most persistent, daring, brilliant attorney – and now he'll be going up against old, alcoholic Enrique!
Oh please, says Leo, don’t make a telenovela out of this. And don’t underestimate yourself. Enrique retorts: You’re the one who shouldn’t underestimate me! [Bitter irony is lost on Leo. He is the Man in the Gray Teflon Suit.]

The Reign of the Naz begins. She sends the odaliscas – Jade, Rania and Amina – to cooking school. Lesson one: How to prepare carnero for your man. No la confrontes, (Don’t confront her) Amina warns Rania. And the three march meekly toward the kitchen, like three lambs preparing to dress the mutton.

When Lucas gets home, Mama Rosa tells him to go to Natalia’s room – he’ll find a nice surprise there. Lucas stops at the doorway when he sees Daniel and Natalia together. This is what he hears:
N: ¡Qué divertido! Eres mi papá pero de mi misma edad! Lo máximo!
(What fun! You’re my father but you’re my age. The greatest!)
D: ¿Te gusta?
(You like that?)
N: Sí, sí, me gusta – Papá!
(Yes, yes I like it, Dad!)
They hug.
D: Sabes, es divertido tener una hija de mi edad. ¿Qué papá te gusta más, el viejo o el joven?
(You know it’s fun to have a daughter my age. Which father do you like more, the old one or the young one?)
N: Me gustas más tú! (I like you better!)
D: Hija! (Daughter!)

Credits roll.

NovelaMaven thank you once again for the recap for this blood pressure boiling episode.

Really this novela has really made it hard to root for any of these characters at all.

Marisa sorry i didn't feel one ounce of pity for her not when she keeps repeatedly making the same mistake.

Not surprised even though Albieri would be arrested he wants to be acknowledged from his peers by his great achievement. I have a feeling even though he may have dodged a bullet by Julio and Luisa talking him out of exposing what he did. He's going to get his chance to tell everyone about his great breakthrough. The guy can barely suppress himself wanting to have that recognized.

Another selfish egotistical maniac Leo he never fails to make me go uGh are you for real, now he blames Marisa and Lucas for Nati's problems. Really and what did you do to help your granddaughter?Best thing he could have done for Nati is throw her horrible mother out of the house and not have so much a negative influence on her daughter.

I do wonder how dear Leo will take it when he sees how much Cris is helping Dora fight him with her own lawyer. One wonders if he'll accuse her of the ultimate betrayal.

I like the fact that Lucas is finally pushed to the brink, that he is willing to battle his own father over him acknowledging Daniel as his son and not a copy of Lucas.

It's going to be priceless when Leo learns how inept Roberto is as a lawyer and not getting his own way.

Are Pablo's brain cells finally firing up?

I don't know if Anita was starting to be attracted to the Chump by what he was going through but how any woman in her right mind after overhearing how he talked to Clara over the phone. Should have a big fat stamp and stamp it on his head a major loser and reject. He deserved what Malicia did to him what a total a-hole.

Rosa oh my these people are just not good for my blood pressure at all.

Clara call the cops already and have you even got in to check to see if your Fernando is still breathing? Two grown woman can't handle one stoned out druggy who is dead on her feet and just wants to sleep? What about the security at where she is living did she even think to tell them she does not want Paula to be in the premises. This is why Malicia got her marriage broken up and now has gotten to go on a trip to Paris. WAKE UP Clara and stop being a dope, you're going to lose your job if this continues.

Lucas wow i think him hearing Daniel and Nati talking and her saying she likes him better as her dad will be the final straw for him.

¡Muy bien hecho, amiga!
I actually liked this episode (except for Enrique's PSA, of course)!

My niece has a certain expression that my sister calls 'Fierce Face.' I would call Lucas' expression at the end of the episode - Fierce Face. Well, as fierce as Lucas can get. I'm sorry but he is such a wimp.

I loved the scene with Nati and Daniel. Lucas shouldn't get angry about that. He should embrace whatever makes his daughter laugh and talk like a normal person. A non-judgmental soul mate is what she needs.

I see we're setting Enrique up for his vindication in court and of course, he'll probably get drunk on the day of the trial and only pull himself together at the last minute.

I loved the Naz ordering the odalisques to the kitchen. It's about time those women actually did something! Not that the Naz ever did anything around the house either. But she deserves her moment of power.

I just feel sorry for Clara. She's way out of her depth and isn't getting much help. True, she's not asking for help but still. The Chump has reverted to form. I sure hope he doesn't end up with Anita. She's way too good for him.

Think Pablo think! Go to the club and check on Malicia's story about her trip. You can do it!

Great summary NovelaMaven. With all the characters feelings showing/ not showing, except for eye rolling or mouth set in a grimace you make the plot move along.

Gloria is true to her character.

Could the sKanks baby be Daniels? Leo would go into super lawsuit mode. Barb

What great comments! Thank you!

Blusamurai, I agree with just about everything you say, but like Jean, I still sympathize with Clara. She can't bring herself to be the one responsible for sending Fernando to jail even if, logically -- and telenovelogically -- it is the only way out of the current crisis.

And I sure hope Pablo checks up on Malicia's story before the witch gets back; once she's standing there and lying to his face, it's too late.

Jean, I really liked this episode too, mostly for the way Daniel and Natalia have each found a soul mate in the other. Maybe this is what Natalia needed to turn her life around. And maybe it's what Daniel needed to break through his terrible loneliness. So let's hope that Lucas can get past his "Fierce Face" reaction (Great description, by the way!) and become a protective father figure for both of them.

Barb, at this point I have no idea whose baby Miss K is carrying. But judging from all the hints she's been dropping, I think we're all going to be surprised! (And icky Hilda will be the most surprised of all!)

NovelaMaven the reason why i am so hard on Clara when Fernando tried to get clean she thinks the way to celebrate is to take him to a club with alcohol available. Now that he is at this critical stage in life she along with Caro use the internet and check for rehab centers to help him. She should have been doing that when he said he wanted to be clean, plus her not telling Rogelio about her problems. She needs a man right now to lean on as we see the Chump is not the answer. I won't bring up Leo as person who can sympathize about what she's going through with her son. That selfish egomaniac doesn't have a clue even more than she does.

As for the Nati and Daniel relationship, the way Marisa is do you even think she will allow it?I certainly don't see her get any support from either of her parents concerning him.

As for Pablo ita i hope he goes check up on her also but we are talking about another clueless individual here too.

You are completely right about Clara, Blusamurai. She has made one mistake after another. [Maybe her biggest mistake was the offscreen one when she decided to marry Raul Escobar!]. But I can't help it -- I like her and I sympathize with her. I find it completely believable that a loving and intelligent mother could allow herself to be sucked into the hell of her son's addiction.

And as for the bond between Nati and Daniel, if it were up to Marisa, Daniel would never be allowed in Casa Ferrer. But since it's Leo's house and Leo is enchanted with Daniel, I doubt that Marisa will be able to treat him like another Alejandro. Or at least I hope not:-)

NovelaMaven, thank you once again for a terrific recap and morning Spanish Lesson.

This was one of the better episodes. Hopefully, Leo will be the one to take Nati and Daniel under his wing and protect them from Marisa and clueless Lucas. So Marisa had a terrible childhood, that is no excuse for being a horrible mother.

Clueless Lucas and Clueless Jade just need to run off together and get it over with.

The parts that showed Daniel and Nati bonding were wonderful. It was they like they picked up where they left off as children. Hopefully both of them can find some peace.

The best part of the episode was there was NO MALICIA.

Maybe Karla will have her child next week. I am willing to bet that it is not blond haired and blue eyed.

Rosemary

I'm with you Rosemary. I hope that Karla has her baby next week. To be consistent with the way the sKanks are potrayed as amusing bumblers, one assumes that it is going to be obvious in the delivery room that the child is not Roberto's. I can't think of any way that it would be that obvious unless the baby were black or oriental.

I assume/hope that we don't have to go through a paternity suit by the sKanks. We've already got 2 potential lawusits going - Leo's suit to claim paternity of Daniel and Silvia's proceeding against Albieri. We don't need another one.

Can't seem to get to watching my
tapes, so for Wednesday-Friday I'm going to count heavily on TWB&BR (the world's best and brightest recappers) and TEBC (their equally bright commenters) this to keep up and get ready for the last days.

Thought on reading Jean's recap for Wednesday (I think), it's good Nati lost the baby. Given the stuff in her system, it could have been born with horrible deformaties, existing addictions and terrible psychological problems.

Today NovelaMaven's recap let's us know that playing with Daniel again she doesn't seem so upset about the loss anyway???? (Remember, I haven't see it.)

Over the weeks we've learned how proud Alberti is of cloning a human. I keep wondering how much more difficult that would be than cloning any warm-blooded animal (like Dolly for example). The only difference is A had to lie to the carrier (birth mother), but how different would the process itself be?

Maybe I'd have more time to watch if I didn't write such long replies!

Have a nice weekend, All you Fine Folk. Lois

Thanks again, friends, for the nice words.

Lois, You are right that for the moment, Nati looks untroubled. And yet everything I know about grief has taught me that it comes in waves. A person may be smiling one moment and then sobbing uncontrollably the next because of some trigger -- a word, an odor, a memory. So when we see Nati sharing a light moment with Daniel, it doesn't mean she's not upset about losing her (and Alejandro's) baby.

Women grieve their early pregnancy losses harder than most people think; they mourn for all the dreams that can no longer come true.

That's why it was especially moving to see Natalia at ease and smiling, stepping out of her isolation if only for a blink of an eye.

(And it was moving to see Daniel move out of his isolation too. As Rosemary put it, it was as if they had picked up where they left off as children.)

Late again so I'll keep it short. Very nicely done NM. Nice description of Jadiya and Rania as "the kids," and "don't make a telenovela out of this" had me laughing.

This episode started out frustrating but then surprisingly they decided to push forward several storylines! First we get some slight movement as Pablo wakes up slightly, we see a little more of Marisa's past, and Nazira moves from complaints to actions. Then even better, Daniel and Nati meet, and really hit it off! I'm glad the show went there, because the scenes between them were really good, and their empathy was plausible. (And of course their playful conversation ended up seeming like another knife in Lucas's back.) We also got some substantial movement on Leo's lawsuit and the two countersuits, and in that, finally some payoff on Enrique's inferiority complex. On the plot meter this is a 4 or 5 (of 5).

Also, Clara is now officially dumber than Jade. She will let anyone into her house, and let almost anything happen to her without taking even the first reasonable precautions to prevent it. She doesn't deserve to be attacked, and I can still sympathize with her somewhat, but she could have easily avoided a lot of trouble.

Jean: lol at "think Pablo think!"
