La Verdad Oculta #87: Revenge of the nerds

Chicles quickly tires of pretending to write vowels with Caramelo and grabs the chance to disappear with Juan José on a visit to Santiago at the tunnel house. While the two men joke in wink-wink, nudge-nudge fashion over the unsolicited kiss from nevertheless hot flirt, Zaida, Chicles alleviates boredom by snooping in the makeup room.

And with truly hilarious results that must mollify Santiago when Chicles reappears as a pint-sized version of Mario, because he's patient with the boy. Embarrassed Juan José absconds with him quickly, but not before Santiago reminds Juan José to phone Alejandra -- and that some guys indeed can remove their faces like Chicles saw in the movie.

Ulises visits Zaida in her new apartment, where she learns from him that someone she already knows lives across the hall: Mauricio's girlfriend, Elsa. He exits when she receives an irritating call from Édgar with information he's supposed to "take care" of her, and Zaida reluctantly gives Édgar her address.

Mario's resident techno-geek revisits David and Abelardo in Mario's office and explains if they want to install high-tech, covert communications in David's hotel office, the base location will have to be nearby for sufficient signal strength. David's sold on this solution due to his furious vengeance to make Adolfo eat his insults to Gabriela, in whose fortitude and intelligence he has the utmost confidence.

Édgar arrives at Zaida's, where she accuses him of spying rather than caring; and as he's exiting, Zaida encounters Elsa and Caramelo. Zaida smiles particularly at Caramelo; and Caramelo takes particular interest in Zaida, smiling and asking her name -- which Zaida also does in return, remarking with a grin that "Caramelo" is sweeter than "María del Carmen."

Before they enter their apartment, Zaida makes sure to invite Elsa to coffee later, and Caramelo turns to wave a lingering goodbye as Zaida also waves, smiling. At their departure, Édgar makes a suggestive remark that he's going to "take good care" of Zaida, to which she objects and warns him before stepping back in.

A moment later on the way to see Zaida, Ulises approaches Édgar at his post in the hallway and braces him regarding his identity; whereupon Édgar grossly overreacts and punches him in the gut. The ruckus brings everyone back out in the hall in aide of crumpled Ulises, with Édgar claiming the guy must have a stomach ache.

At the condo, nervous Bertha attempts to escape to bed; but Adolfo's sensing her fear and has a plan to unruffle her feathers. He lies in rationalizing her testimony about his alibi: nobody can vouchsafe her, and he didn't hurt David. In fact, he's the victim of the Genovéses attempt to squeeze him out just when the health of the company is threatened by Mario's and David's incapacitation.

Bertha's coming around, so he invites her to an elegant supper and flatters her "daring" and "intelligence." At Alejandra's office, she's still agitated and won't take Juan José's call; instead she and Mina plan a little carousing by themselves. In David's and Gabriela's bedroom suite, while Gabriela disappears to make a bedtime snack, David tries to push to his feet out of the wheelchair.

Upon her return, he's nowhere to be found; but Gabriela drops the snack tray, crashing to the floor, when David pulls himself around the corner -- on his feet. They celebrate with a joyous embrace. Back at Adolfo's, Bertha descends in the little black dress; but he has room service instead of a restaurant, to the tune of the pop of a cold champagne bottle.

Bertha's a little disappointed; but Adolfo continues with his encouragement plan by dangling the beach condo keys in the air between them, to her surprised delight. And he promises of course to never ask her to do anything risky, as he never has so far, he claims. Bertha is considering.

At a club, Alejandra's not happy with Juan José or any other guys who approach her and Mina. When Juan José calls her there, she blows him off; and on the other end, he angrily commits phonicide. Asunción and Chicles follow behind and pick up the pieces; but the phone is toast, and Chicles gets it to play with.

At Adolfo's safe house, bloody and broken Valentín suddenly becomes creative after Dante's threat of a nice float in the drainage canal and dredges up the idea to phone Garnica's hotel in Puerto Vallarta about his personal effects.

Next morning, Elsa makes a sad conversation with Mauricio at his studio about her uneasiness with him, the apartment, the job and everybody at the office -- and especially the engagement. She returns the engagement ring and resigns her job, regretting she can't love him like he deserves.

In Mario's office, Abelardo is absolutely effusive in congratulation at David's entrance using a walker; and "Mario" is happy, too. David explains to incredulous Gabriela the plan for high-tech, covert communications at the hotel office, where David can hear and see conversations remotely from the floor below and slip Gabriela the answers she needs in an earphone.

This morning at Adolfo's Bertha seems sufficiently diverted and convinced by the vision of her impending beach trip swimming before her eyes to allay her fears about Adolfo for the moment. As she exits upstairs, Zaida enters and reports to Adolfo her progress with Juan José and that Dante pulled him into even more investment and ruinous possibilities.

Zaida's not angered at Dante anymore; but she's furious with that brutal thug, Édgar, who beat up her friend and landlord. Adolfo calls Édgar on the carpet and makes him agree to apologize to Ulises. At Dante's, he and his goons supervise Valentín's phone call to Garnica's Puerto Vallarta hotel, where they will try to retrieve Garnica's effects.

At their studio, Mina and Alejandra painfully toast with gulps of alka seltzer when Juan José enters and can't prevent himself giving Alejandra a hard time about her club trip. Through a nasty headache, she yells that he's in no position to give her a hard time and to get lost. But when he tries to explain Zaida, Alejandra stipulates forgiveness only if he never sees her again -- which Juan José claims he can't do because of business.

Her stipulation flouted, she gives him the boot. After he exits, when Mina thinks Alejandra was being a little harsh, Alejandra exclaims Juan José is rich enough to do business with anybody! The only reason he's doing business with Zaida is because he likes the old hag!

At Yolanda's, Carlos urges her to see a doctor; but she knows she isn't physically or even mentally ill. She has a deep sadness and regret; she's led a cowardly, useless life -- lying to protect Adolfo for hideous things. Carlos takes her hand and begs Yolanda to distance herself and come live with him; and she laments no one leaves Adolfo without him wanting it.

When Carlos asks why Yolanda doesn't report Adolfo to the police, she notes it's for the same reason he does not; but now Carlos is ready to testify, he declares. Pointing up the trefoil ring on his finger, Carlos understands it is evidence in a crime.

Yolanda will not tell him which crime; but she will reveal that the person who needs the evidence is -- Mario!

Hmm...Caramelo took an immediate fondness for Zaida, despite Zaida being a villain. And Zaida for Caramelo in return.

I figured Zaida was going to invite Elsa for coffee, as she did; and how about if I hear in that conversation that during the hardship of her rough upbringing, Zaida lost a baby somehow. And she would turn out to be Caramelo's birth mother.

It would make a bit more sense that they had Zaida be so completely nerve wracked after Garnica's murder; it would be giving her a bit of sympathetic possibility for rehabilitation.

Thank-you Jeri! You are super speedy and I was able to read this right after watching the show.

Interesting thought about Zaida being Caramelo's mother. I thought maybe Caramelo was staring because she'd never seen a woman dressed like a $10 whore (the $20 whores on the street have better taste in clothing than that.) Why did I suddenly have thoughts about a kidnapping when Edgar showed up?

I cannot believe Elsa broke things off with Mauricio. Seriously, that stunned me. I know some were speculating that she wasn't over JJ but I think there's more to it than that. I think Caramelo telling Elsa she'd rather live with Asuncion really crushed her and her dreams for a happy family. Will she back out of adopting Caramelo too?

I wonder if Bertha repaid Adolfo for her new apartment by sleeping with him? I don't see Carlos forgiving her if she did. Maybe the new couple will be Elsa and Carlos?

I really, really don't like Alejandra right now. She wanted JJ to call, when he did she didn't want to talk to him. This isn't middle school, it's time to grow up, Ale.

Jeri, when I saw Zaida and Caramelo together I had a horrible feeling. Maybe she's her mother indeed, maybe she'll try to use Elsa and the child.

commits phonicide

LOL!

Wow, though I suspected the relationship of Elsa and Mauricio was based on pink clouds and illusions, this break-up surprised me, it happened sooner than I expected.
When JJ was in a relationship she very wisely decided to move on and accepted Mauricio. She even persuaded herself she was totally over the big guy (which wasn't true) and was in love with Mauricio (which wasn't true either). And she does like Mauricio much. But now that JJ is free she suddenly realizes she doesn't want to continue this relationship. That's rich.
This girl is confused, which isn't surprising since in the 1980's she was the heroine, JJ was her lover and Mauricio was The Second Guy, aka the perfect man who will never get the female lead because her heart is already taken. The writers haven't changed that situation, but now she's just a secondary character who most likely will never become a protagonist. And secondary characters don't end up with protagonists, Televisa rules 1.04. Since there aren't many single young men in this telenovela, the only man she could (and should) marry is Mauricio. But Mau is the second guy... Finally I start to feel sorry for her.

Xlnt:
She wanted JJ to call, when he did she didn't want to talk to him.
Yes, but since then he snogged with the blonde femme fatale. It's natural that she's angry at him and feels stupid. :) I find this new separation ridiculous, but what Alejandra does isn't different from what hundreds of other telenovela heroines did when they realized their lovers might've been unfaithful.

Oh my, that speech in which David glowingly described Gabi and then said "Somos familia,"  to Fausto brought tears to my eyes.   I believe he said that Gabi had not mentioned the false wedding again, she is an inspiration for all of gals who might have a memory for slights!  I have only one little caveat, isn't Gabi going to be in danger with this new scheme?

Too bad Edgar is a bad guy, he has 1940s  movie star good looks!  He'd be cute with Mina. I know, he's permanent resident on the dark side of town!

Jeri, thanks for the links and recap, I need you with no TV!

Jeri, I missed this so your truly exciting and fascinating recap is especially appreciated. Your writing is simply stellar.

"wink-wink, nudge-nudge", " nevertheless hot flirt", unruffle her feathers" and "high-tech, covert communications" were marvelous.

I'm not surprised Elsa left Mauricio - and she should have. I'll echo her words that she does not love him as he deserves. At least she did not continue to perpetrate the charade. I do think that everything going on with Caramelo has also heightened her anxiety and do feel sorry for her.

Sandy, I think we are all routing for Mina. I still say Mauricio is her match.

Xint, I've always felt Elsa and Carlos would be a good match.

Interesting (and sad) about Zaida losing a child. I hope she's not bringing more turmoil and angst to Elsa, but it certainly doesn't look good.

Thanks Jeri! Wonderful as always.

Diana

On the two breakups, JJ+Ale, Mau + Elsa,  will viewerville be able to relax in the end and enjoy our requisite bodas  knowing the inner workings of two of the couples?  Even if there is a partners musical chairs shake up, we might not have our happily ever after sure and smug smiles on our faces en el fin!   Like real life, we'll know too much.

Jeri-

This was one of your best. Thank you. I don't think that Elsa know that JJ and Ale are going through a rogh patch, so that's not the motive for her breaking off with Mau. She seems to be doing a lot of thinking about her life (like Yolanda) because of theis whole difficult Caramelo situation, and it seems she is trying to simplify her life. Sometimes you need to clear out all the extraneous clutter before you can address the real/main issue. The fact is that as Mau's love and adoration of her grows, her love for him hasn't grown as it should. She has felt uncomfortable with his favoritism at work for some time. She has always preferred to earn her keep, rather than being a kept woman. So now that she's shed herself of the guilt of being with a man she doesn't love enough, and being in a job she doesn't deserve, she can deal with the main mess in her life-- the custody situation with Caramelo and her feelings for JJ. These two issues are not as easy to sort out as the Mau and job issue, but it helps that those other issues no longer exist to further cloud those main issues.

Good points, ladies.

My question is:
What is she going to do now? If she doesn't find a new job soon, she won't be able to keep that expensive flat and to support Caramelo.
One more reason why I'm not happy that she met Zaida.

Sorry for the typos above.

Sandy- I was also touched by David saying they are all famliy now, and so was Fausto. David and Gabi are in a really good place, really solid. She has forgiven him his huge betrayal, and she's not holding a grudge because she knows he's helping her dad and "Mario" keep secrets from her. I don't even think their relationship will be in any danger once she does find out what the additional secrets are. But I also worry that her so publicly challenging Adolfo for the presidency (and appearing like she knows her stuff) will put her in Adolfo's direct line of fire, and put her in danger.

It seems Bertha will have to be burned directly by Adolfo's schemes before she will learn her lesson. She and Chicles are alike. Impressed by shiny new things and willing to bend the rules to get them, despite knowing that it's worng. Note that I am comparing her to a 9 year old.

Jeri- Interesting theory about Zaida being Caramelo's bio mom. That would be a zinger! Maybe Caramelo was impressed because Zaida looked like Street Walker Barbie, come to life. Ulises sis a great job on her hair, by the way. It looks way better.

I think it's time for Mina to pay Mau a visit...

Thank you all for the wonderful comments first thing! xlnt, I also suspected Elsa's timing coinciding with Asunción's adoption talk. I guess the issue put her over the edge.

She made a good try with Mauricio, but in fact she was on the rebound. That's not a good time to make lasting relationships; they are there to just get you through the rough patch.

Yeah…Zaida. I'm sure Caramelo saw plenty of streetwalkers in her former life. The fact that Zaida is a villain and Caramelo liked her despite that is my concern. Kids in telenovelas tip you off to who's good and bad.

I don't think Bertha slept with Adolfo. I'm beginning to think he's keeping her to have someone young around, now that he's getting old.

He really likes her, and he hasn't made move #1 on her yet. I'm thinking he wouldn't ruin it if she didn't want it. But I'm adopting a wait and see attitude.

OMG, if I heard my husband was found kissing someone like what I saw in Juan José's office, I would probably dump him after 25 years of being together, let alone be ticked off.

If anything, Alejandra's not raising enough hell. Man, that good ole boy laugh he had about with Santiago ticked me off, too.

Sandy, so glad I can help. :-) Are you getting your TV viewing back soon? I hadn't actually thought about Gabriela being in danger now. But Adolfo had no problem killing her mother.

Diana, Zaida has not said anything about losing a child; it was just my supposition. Sorry to give the wrong impression on that!

I am looking forward to Mina and Mauricio meeting again, too; they are more suited to each other, IMO. And after Mina's sorrowful lament two nights ago, can anybody doubt they were setting us up for it.

P.S. Don't we just know that Chicles is going to get into some mischief with Juan José's discarded phone? he he

Awesome Jeri, fabulous expository writing with a host of creative touches. Was I imagining it that
Zaida asked Edgar over the phone if he had any cocaine just before she gave him the address?

Did anyone notice that Zaida paid any attention to Caramelo at Puerto Vallarta? I did not.
We know that she heard JJ give Elsa's address to Limón via phone when she was in JJ's office. Do you think she chose to live there
to be near Elsa and child or simply
because she had the Ulises connection or both?

I have thought that Mauricio was finished as soon as he mentioned the distancing from Limón. Family is very important to Elsa. She dearly loves her brother who has
some obvious faults but protected her when it was necessary. Elsa understands the less fortunate side of life. I do feel bad that
she like Yolanda is now considering herself worthless.
Yolanda has good reason to regret her lifetime of compromise. I agree that Elsa is somewhat lost, but I believe that she
confronts the issues and takes proper steps to remedy them.

Where is Don Fausto allegedley
living/working at this point?
I haven't seen any attempts to
contact his daughters lately.
He seems to be enjoying the
casa detras.

Does anyone think that the writers are attempting to insert the theme of hatred and violence against gays with Edgar's brutal attack
on Ulises? He was all too eager
to pounce on him. As Zaida told Adolfo, "He (Ulises) is more delicate than I am."

Zaida and Caramelo had no interaction in PV. The kids were kept separate playing on the beach or with their four parental figures. Zaida only saw Chicles that time in JJ's room before she left, and of course Garnica was on the same plane with Chicles and checked in with him- starting the fascination with the briefcase.

The apartment building is pure novela small world coincidence. But that always leads to something. Yes, it's very disturbing that Elsa is now vulnerable, without a job, in the same buidling as Zaida.

I don't think Elsa sees herself as worthless like Yolanda does. In fact she is taking the steps Yolanda never did- putting a stop to certain unagreeable things in her life before it becomes a runaway train she can't get off of. Yolanda should have had such presence of self many, many years ago. But I don't think she will be able to find an easy solution to the custody issue. As for the JJ issue, that will take time to heal. I would also say that would take space, and in an ideal situation she would be able to distance herself enough from JJ to heal properly. But because she is sharing custody of Caramelo, that can't happen. Once again, I think JJ and Elsa need to see a divorce counselor or family counselor.

Fausto is supposedly at his old job "selling books" everyday. He goes home to the apartment each night, after "Mario" has supposedly turned in early to his room, not to be disturbed (he never has dinner with the fam). He sees Gabi in the morning before she goes to work (and also shows his face to the servants), hangs out with David and Abelardo, goes to the tunnel house when nothing interesting is happening in the big house, then goes home in the evenings. Sometimes he leaves earlier than other evenings, depending on what's needed in the big house. He's then back in the apt in the evenings to have dinner with Juli (and sometimes Gabi when she drops by after work). That's the pattern I've seen at least.

Floridia, I think Zaida asked Édgar if he had something to take a note on. The location of her apartment seemed to be a coincidence to me, as she had known Ulises before.

It was push come to shove with Elsa: when the chips were down, she was showing pair of deuces. Mauricio had no choice but to insist. I would have, too.

If they were going to get married, as she had just agreed, her loyalty had to be to him, not Juan José. It was a moment of truth.

There is the gay issue. Later on at Adolfo's they had bad-guy Édgar make a back-handed agreement with Zaida to apologize to her "little girlfriend, uh, boyfriend." While good-guy Mauricio introduced Ulises to the show as his friend.

Mau, as Ulises and we call him, seems to get along well with all kinds of people. He's really easy going (like Mina). He and JJ could have been really good friends had JJ not kept treating him like crap. Remember how friendly and open Mau was with JJ in the beginning; even times when he took Elsa out on dates and returned to her apt to find JJ waiting there (a big jealousy trigger for most guys). JJ threw what could have been a wonderful friendship down the crapper. I fault him more for ruining that possible bromance than the Elsa friendship mess, because the Elsa situation is more complicated. He didn't feel the same way as she did. He behaved very badly towards her, but they both haven't figured out how to handle the situation.

But Mau has no prior history with him. If I was Mau, I would be like forget this guy!

Vivi, muchísimas gracias; thanks for clarifying everything I mentioned. Yes, "Mau!" I thought that was hysterical when Ulises referred to M as such. I totally agree with you re JJ's treatment of Mau. He needs to repair that huge personal travesty of justice.

The problem with my analysis on the Mau, Elsa breakup is that I have little objectivity because personally, I like Mau so much and in a way am ambivalent at best about JJ. I can't take my own preferences out of the picture. Also, at my age and years married, I value different things than a younger woman might. Mau is just a better person, therefore more attractive  than JJ in my way of thinking. It isn't my choice though is it.

Jeri, can't record so have to use your links with a phone.  I've crossed into the LVO addiction category!

Wonderful recap Jeri. So far I'm liking David's plan. He just may come across something useful to finally bust Adolfo out.

I'm leery of Elsa becoming friends with Zaida since she's bad news. I was surprised that Elsa not only broke off the engagement, but also quit her job. I'm guess Mauricio will now hook up with Mina.

Yolanda should tell Carlos what happened so he can be helpful to "Mario" since he's come to the good side.

I'm glad Fausto didn't get too upset with a curious Chicles rummaging through the stage makeup although I'm fearful he may blab about it at an inopportune time.

Forgot to mention I was afraid Zaida would have a wardrobe malfunction with that dress. Geesh.

Carlos won't be fully redeemed until he turns himself into the police and tells them exactly what happened to the hotel maid 11 years ago, his role in it, and clears JJ's name. We have all been pressuring Dora to be the one to testify, but we should really be putting the screws on Carlos. He's the one who really knows what happened and how it happened. If Dora testifies, it will be him that gets dragged off to jail. He better do it first.

Thanks for the recap Jeri. I was also shocked that Elsa broke up with Mau. While I understand why she did, I'm still sad about it. I do hope this means dear Mina can finally get someone!

Zaida's dress was awful. I'm intrigued with the thought that she could be Caramelo's birth mother.

I really hope that Zaida isn't Caramelo's mom. The novela has been very sympathetic to JJ, Limon and Elsa. This new paternity would shake that triangle too much, wouldn't it? Perhaps they are just trying to signal a new personality change in Z, kind to children and later redemption.

Sandy:
In my case: I can like a character who's played by an actor whom I find irritating, but it's hard not to like a character who's played by an actor whom I like. First case: Tom Cruise isn't my favourite guy but I adore him in many movies.
Second case: I can't stand Rodrigo from Destilando and Camilo from Te amaré en silencio, but I have a soft spot for the three dumb Juans (LVO, FELS, CS). They are big, bipolar, often obnoxious but caring and entertaining children. Had JJ been played by someone who has no charm, I'd be in team Side Characters. Yeah, I'm totally biased.
But at least we can exaggerate the flaws of these guys/ladies, we can emphasize their virtues and debate over those flaws and virtues. ;)

I think J J noted and I thought Zaida was concentrating on Elsa'a address when it was mentioned in J J's phone conversation in his office. I don't think it's a coincidence that Zaida is living in her friend's building but I haven't an idea of her reason why she might have moved to be near Elsa and Caramelo. Maybe to spy? J Lo started a trend with the plunging necklline and strategically placed tape but not everyone can wear it as evidenced by Zaida.

Oh, that Chicles is as much of a pain as Dora. So is J J. I hope to see E Y in a role someday where he has smarts along with being handsome.

Hope David's plan works. But since he's so frisky maybe he should return to work part time.

Jeri, love your great recaps and thanks for the links.

GinCA

Jeri, thanks for explaining
Zaida's question to Édgar and also for alerting me to Édgar's reference to Ulises as first "amiguita" and later as "amiguito." I missed it but went back and listened.

Does anyone think that "Carlos"
appears much younger in TDA?

GinCA, I'm drawing a blank on Elsa's address possibly leaked to Zaida by Juan José; but interesting, if so!

Sandy, I've never liked Zaida much, so I'm with you. I hope she isn't the birth mother.

If GinCA is right, and Zaida moved nextdoor on purpose, her friendliness to Elsa and Caramelo would be in a whole different light.

She could be following Adolfo's orders to destroy Juan José, starting with kidnapping for ransom, for example.

Vivi, so true about Carlos. I think I filed that conversation away in my "believe it when I see it folder," though.

Adolfo would never let Carlos testify against him if he gets wind of it, and I hope he doesn't. :-(

Things look bad enough for Adolfo exercising his droit de seigneur on Bertha and then being furious with Carlos when he gets wind of that, too.

Floridia, Marco Méndez has held up very well since LVO and does look very youthful in TDA.

I might be interested in watching that show had Marco a bigger part. I like his hair here better; he looks like a Beatle in TDA.

ON the topic of romance, has anyone seen "Blue Valentine?" From the review in The New Yorker and one in a local paper, it is an
excellent portrayal of true love gone sour with excellent acting.
I hope to see it soon.

I think Elsa was stupid to turn her back on Mauricio. She is living in a dream world to think there' a possibility of her getting with Juan. He's head over heels in love with Alejandra even though she drives him crazy. Mauricio is a great guy and I don't believe that Elsa gave him a worthwhile shot. I think her accepting his proposal was aimed towards showing Juan Jose what he was missing. Elsa did not commit her heart to Mauricio and always compared him (silently) to JJ. She's at fault her because she should never have accepted his proposal and led him on. She told him she was in love with him - she lied! JJ has some immature points as when he threw the phone but Elsa too needs to grow up. Life doesn't always give you what you want and sometimes the best thing for you doesn't come in the type of package you expect. Mauricio probably is the best thing for her, but now Elsa has thrown that away. I hope Mauricio goes after Mina - they'd make a good couple. But he needs to heal because Elsa has broken his heart. At least she didn't marry him - I'll give her that.

Love the scenes with David and Gabi. They are a passionate couple and she certainly applied her own brand of physical therapy that helped him get back on his feet - literally.

I think Elsa was fooling herself into believing she loved Mauricio. She cares for him so she thought that would translate to love. I agree with the thought that she probably did some soul searching after the Caramelo situation.

Jeri, thanks for the recap. I love watching LVO and your breezy style of unraveling what happened. I don't think Zaida is Caramelo's mother. Zaida’s a skank but way too resourceful to have dumped a baby in the trash, even if she wasn't as connected as she is now. She would have at least placed the baby on someone's doorstep or in front of an orphanage. Caramelo's a doll. Who wouldn't take to her instantly?

Hi, Niecie; they made too much of a point of it. It was odd; and the crux is that Caramelo was particularly interested in Zaida (a villain), not that Zaida found Caramelo appealing, although that wouldn't be necessary at all.

Jeri, egads! On the other hand, if Zaida is Caramelo's mom this could lead JJ and Elsa to make a truce.
