Eva Luna #96 Tue 3/22/11 Shocked expressions abound

Eva Luna Episode 96, March 22, 2011.

RECAP IS UP!! It starts below the bulleted highlight list.

Here's a brief bulleted list of the highlights:
  • Carlos invites Alicia over to his place. He seems harmless but he has revenge on his mind. He starts to attack Alicia but can't go through with it. Much regret and shame from him. (I am glad he couldn't go through with it but am still unhappy with what they've done to this character.)
  • Deborah, Eva, and Don Julio are connecting the dots and deducing that Marcella murdered Daniel's parents.
  • Don Julio is still putting the moves on Justa and she seems to be wavering a bit. Don Ricardo does some snooping and figures out that Señor Olmos is really Julio. Uh-oh.
  • Gallo locates Bruno and pretty kissin' cousin in Florida. Marcella follows close behind and (apparently) hastens them to the next world via a gun. She later seems very pleased with herself. Boy did Bruno have a shocked expression on his face when she appeared.
  • Alicia finally pulls the plug on her dysfunctional relationship with Leo.
  • Alicia discovers that she is with child. Uh-oh.
  • Marisol finally does something smart and tells cute young music label guy about her past as a table dancer. He is understanding.
  • Daniel visits the pension with Laurita and stumbles upon Don Julio (who is there borderline sexually harassing Justa). Major shocked and impactada look from Daniel, and that is the photo I present you with below: Daniel's face upon discovering that Don Julio is ALIVE! ALIVE!!!

Episode 96—Full recap.

Once again I'll be combining the short-cut scenes so we don't all go nuts!

We start in Miami Florida, where Bruno is sunning himself. Pretty cousin joins him and they lock lips. Gallo watches them from behind some palm trees and says to himself that Bruno is a "dead man."

Alicia comes to visit Leo. As usual we get a gratuitous shot of the actor wearing nothing but a towel and showing off his hot bod and tattoo. She pulls the plug on their relationship. She won't be the lover of her sister's husband. "Eva deserves better and I can't stoop so low" she says. Leo tries to dissuade her but she is resolute.

Marcella is talking to Eva at the dinner table. She's pretending that she wants a "truce" with Eva, since Eva's going to be her daughter-in-law. Eva says she'll have to think on it for a few days. After she leaves Marcella wonders if Eva has heard something about Daniel's parents' deaths and is waiting to hear more info from Deborah.

Deborah, meanwhile, has done her homework and discovered that Marcella couldn't have burned her hand in the manner that she told Don Julio. (She said she'd burned it in a fire at a hotel.) "She must have burned the hand in the fire that killed Daniel's parents!" Deborah thinks.

Deborah's finding out more about Daniel's parents' deaths. (Click on image to see larger version.)

Marcella visits Deborah. They have this fakey-friendly conversation. Deborah thanks Marcella for spilling the beans about her being the girls' mom. Deborah says she knew Marcella didn't intend for it to be done in kindness, but the result was that it hastened things and now Deborah is reunited with her kids.

Marcella also "thanks" Deborah for looking after her the other day in her bedroom when she was "delirious." Marcella tries to pass off the stuff she said about killing Daniel's parents as a delirious meaningless rambling. She plays up that she couldn't do anything so horrible! But Deborah is not buying it. Marcella then warns Deborah to not tell anyone. She doesn't want her reputation besmirched because of a "misunderstanding."

Marisol tells the cute music label guy that she was a table-dancer and prostitute. She tells him how she's being blackmailed by Damien. The cute label guy is very understanding. Marisol is expecting that he'll tear up the contract but of course he won't do that. He thanks her for letting him know so they can prepare. Cute label guy says that they'll do something to show Damien. (Wonder what that will be!)

Gallo calls Marcella and tells her that he's discovered Bruno and the pretty cousin. Gallo watches from a distance and we see Bruno and cousin recap all their betrayal of Marcella and drink a toast.

Ictoria is talking with Lileach and telling her how she saw Daniel kissing Eva. She couldn't make a scene when she saw them because that would tip off Daniel that she wasn't off her rocker.

Leo is at the office and wants to know where is secretary, Lasura (kissin' cousin) is. She didn't get authorization to take any days off!

Filler scenes of Bruno and kissin' cousin shopping in Florida.

Deborah talks to a detective about Daniel's parents' deaths. He had suspicions but couldn't prove anything, he says. Deborah thanks him for his help and tells him she'll be in touch if she discovers anything. She then calls Eva and Don Julio.

Alicia has been given a bouquet of flowers. She looks at them with delight, looking for a card, perhaps hoping they're from Leo? But nope, they are from Carlos, who appears behind her. He talks about the "innocent girl who thought she could tour Los Angeles in one day" and she scoffs and says that that girl was dead a long time ago. Not to him, he says. He invites her for dinner at his house. She reluctantly agrees after he tells her that he told his mom about how badly he treated her when he got out of jail, and now mom wants to fix her a nice dinner. But Carlos is thought-bubbling that tonight he'll finally get payback for all the time he spent in jail because of her! Uh oh!

Carlos presents Alicia with flowers. (Click on image to see larger version.)

A meeting between Deborah, Eva, and Don Julio, where they talk about what they learned about Marcella's involvement with Daniel's parents' deaths. There are a series of scenes but I'll condense them down: Marcella had told Don Julio that she burned her hand in a hotel fire (which happened to be the same time that Daniel's parents died). Deborah has discovered that the hotel reported no fires at that time, and they certainly would have known had there been a fire in the hotel. Therefore, Marcella lied to Don Julio about how she burned her hand.

Deborah then reports that the official story on Daniel's parents' death was that dad lost control of the car when he was trying to park it. Anyway, the detective always suspected that this was not how it happened but he couldn't prove anything and the case was closed.

The detective thought that both parents were in the car and someone pushed the auto and it went into a tree? And the parents were already dead when this happened. (Or whatever. I'm losing it here.)

Anyway they all deduce that the parents' death was likely a murder and they also figure that Marcella did it. Marcella's hotel room was only four hours away from where the parents were killed. She probably burned her hand when she was dousing the car with gasoline and the fire got to her hand. It all adds up. But wait, what about a motive? Don Julio supplies the reason: Turns out that Daniel's dad wanted to sell his share of the company. Rather than let that portion of the company go to strangers, Marcella had him killed so that Daniel would inherit. Then Icky was pushed onto Daniel with the hopes that she'd marry him. And so forth and so on. We know the rest. Don Julio also mentions that Marcella was very displeased when Daniel married his first wife. Presumably because she had planned for him to marry Icky.
Deborah, Eva, and Don Julio put their heads together and figure out how Marcella was able to murder Daniel's parents. (Click on image to see larger version.)

After hearing all of this, Eva thinks that Daniel needs to be told! But the others think it's better to wait until they have more concrete evidence.

Bruno and pretty cousin start getting busy in his hotel room, still celebrating how they ripped off Marcella. Up comes Marcella up the stairs. Uh oh. She has a key and opens the door. There is Bruno and pretty cousin in bed, very busy. Finally they notice that they have company. Marcella says "Buenos noches Bruno." We hear a gunshot which we presume kills the cousin, and we see Bruno's shocked face, but we see neither dead body. (I wonder if maybe Bruno isn't dead yet—we still need to know why he was calling himself "Bruno Arismendi"!)

"Buenos noches, Bruno," Marcella says, right before she shoots his cousin (and we are led to believe she shoots him too). Bruno looks a tad shocked. (Click on image to see larger version.)

Alicia has visited Carlos at his house. They are both very nervous together. They drink wine. Mom is nowhere to be seen, however. Alicia admits that she's uncomfortable being alone with Carlos. Carlos explains that his mom has a headache. Let's go see her, he suggests. As soon as they go into "mom's" bedroom it is discovered to be empty. Carlos quickly throws Alicia down on the bed and descends on her as she screams and struggles. He tells her that because of her he rotted in jail. She reminds him that she didn't force him to do anything. But he says it was wrong for her to use him, knowing how much he felt for her. Finally after more struggling and screaming, Carlos loses steam. He realizes what a jerk he's been. He tells her that he loved her and just wanted her to love him back, but that this was not the way. Apologetic and ashamed, he admits that he was horribly wrong and he is so sorry. He'll not bother her again. She scuttles out of there fast as Carlos looks horrified at what he almost did.

Daniel is thought-bubbling about Eva marrying Leo. Francisco comes in to say goodnight. They chat a bit about Francisco's marriage. He doesn't think either of them are happy. Francisco is a simple man, he says. He wants a wife to tend to him and give him hijos. Marisol is busy with all her singing career stuff. Daniel points out the BLINDINGLY OBVIOUS: "You pretended to be a big producer when you met her!" Francisco acted like he wanted a busy career woman, so what would he expect? Daniel then advises that Francisco talk with Marisol about all of this.

Gratuitous Guy Ecker shot: Daniel offers marital advice to Francisco. (Click on image to see larger version.)

Marisol has just finished a song and it went well. Cute label guy invites her to a great dinner out. But she can't—she's got to get home to fix Francisco dinner. Cute label guy reminds her that soon she'll be busy with touring and stuff and won't be home at all. Marisol looks thoughtful at this. Then she says that Francisco was going to be her manager. After some discussion she admits that he probably wouldn't have the experience to do it.

Alicia arrives home after her traumatic evening with Carlos. She becomes nauseated. Because we are in ultimós captitulós, Alicia's brain cells kick in, and instead of it taking her WEEKS to figure it out, she figures it out in a few minutes: She's pregnant. She has to know before Eva and Leo marry, she thinks. A visit to the doctor confirms the pregancy.

Marcella's obviously traveled via Transporter or something back to L.A. from Florida, because here she is, back in L.A., calm as can be, the same night that she presumably killed Bruno and cousin. Renata is in her jammies and with her hair down and wonders where Marcella has been. Marcella gives some excuse but says that her evening was "great for her self-esteem." She then tells Renata to remind Leo to give her five thousand dollars—"I donated it to the fire station." (Remember how Marcella always donates money to charities after she kills someone?)

Don Julio is visiting the pensión and is watching Adrian play with his computer/x-box or whatever it is. Adrian wonders how Don Julio knows so much about computers and video games. "I'll tell you some day," he replies.

Justa comes in and wants to know what he's doing there. He says he came to give something to Adrian. (Or whatever. I'm losing it again.) Justa is all drama-queeny and goes into the kitchen, her eyes all wide, and wonders what's going on and what she's gonna do, blah blah blah. She's so fluttery and nervous when she sees Don Julio. Don Ricardo wants to know what's going on but she covers it up.

Don Ricardo wonders more. We are shown a series of flashbacks as he remembers more about when Mr. Olmos came around and all the stuff he said and Justa said. He really starts to get suspicious, so he snoops in Justa's stuff, finds a box and sees Don Julio's picture inside. Looks like the same guy as Mr. Olmos! Don Ricardo connects the dots. He now wants to confirm that Mr. Olmost and Julio are the same guy.

Eva comes over to Daniel's house to visit him. But he's not home. He has come over to the pensión with Laurita.

Don Julio has a moment alone with Justa. He puts on the smooth moves as usual. She doesn't want to talk to him just then. But he's so smooth. She seems to be weakening. But then Daniel and Laurita arrive. Justa answers the door. She is hesitant to let him in because Julio is there. But Laurita is there and Adrian will want to see her, so what can she do but let them in? Julio quickly removes himself to a different room, but is waylaid by Don Ricardo who has a lot of questions. Before Julio can escape, a very impactado Daniel discovers that Don Julio is still very much alive!

I also add on a personal note that Daniel looks mighty fine in that black shirt. I include a photo below as evidence:

Daniel and Laurita have come to visit Adrian. Behold how fetching that black shirt looks on Guy Ecker. (Click on image to see larger version.)

Thanks Elvira, for the early morning report. You have all the important points. Que un capítulo!
I am amazed at how fast Marzilla flew to Florida and back. Anyone ever fly from LA to Miami? Even if she had her own jet it would take about 6 hrs each way. But she was so quick that Icky seemed to act like she was only a little late getting home from...wearever she said she was.
I wonder if Laurita and Chico see Julio, too. If they do only Icky, Tony, Leo, and Jacky are the only ones who haven't seen him. That revelation has to come soon.

Elvira,

thanks for the bullet points. Emarie ITA about Marcie flying to Miami from LA so quickly.

Julio needs to come out of hiding its not working for him now. Elvira ITA with you about Julio's behavior towards Justa.

Elvira: Thank you so much for the bullet points! I am on the road again and not able to catch much of anything of either Eva or TdA.

I, too, am disappointed in how Carlos has been 'treated' on this TN. I am glad his good side took over and stopped him from carrying out his revenge, but I most certainly hope that Stupid Spandex Alicia heard what he told her...he said he used to study and work hard...until he met her and things went to hell in a handbasket

I so hope that stupid Alicia heard that. Unlike Fer in TdA, Alicia has shown absolutely no signs of growing up; none.

As for Julio, I am a tad disappointed that he is now becoming somewhat of a stalker. He is pressuring Justa in the same way that Ricardo pressured her into marrying him.

Maybe neither of these men will get what they want in the end.

That Eva is finally connecting the dots is a miracle unto itself!

Gracias Elvira!!

Susanita

Thanks, Elvira, for getting the main points up this morning. And thanks too for the photo of bug-eyed Daniel. We see that expression in the intro every day, and I always wondered where it came from. Now I know (though perhaps he has had the same expression at other times and I just haven't remembered?).

Emarie, I too was surprised at Marcela's SST-like travels between LA and Miami. Hmmm...perhaps she used the same airline that the characters in El Clon used to travel back and forth between Miami and Morocco.

Actually, I think somehow Marzilla bribed Scotty to send her via transporter!

I was hoping for something a little more colorful for Bruno's exit, but I guess the writers are saving that for Marcie and Leo.

Justa needs to get away for a while to think about what to do with the rest of her life.

Alicia should consider having an abortion. I realize that most novela characters wouldn't even consider it, but who really wants to give birth to demonspawn?

ok, I am a bit suspicious... did Marcie really kill Bruno? or did she do something else? we actually saw that she killed Rosaura from Bruno's reaction after the first shot, but we did not hear another shot, we just saw Bruno's 'peeing in his sheets' facial expression... so I am wondering what Marcie is up to if she left him alive (probably blew his b___s away though)

Great recap, thank you for including details I had forgotten.
Urban, love your commments always, and regarding your abortion idea, I am sure Marzilla would be glad to fix the girl a nice cup of tea...
I need to vent, a little, sorry. Don't any of the characters take reproductive responsibility, ever????? There is birth control, but no woman in a TN ever uses it. Even so, why doesn't Leo use condoms, the slimeball? US TV stopped having unprotected sex in the 80's because of HIV...
And, I am sorry, but I don't care what Alicia did, Carlos is still responsible for his reponses to her actions. These writers have a weird point of view, the "external locus of control" as they taught us in psychology 101. I need to tighten my beanie, sorry for being toxic.

The detective thought that both parents were in the car and someone pushed the auto and it went into a tree? And the parents were already dead when this happened. (Or whatever. I'm losing it here.)
ok, if I remember correctly the detective said the parents were in the car and the car was pushed down adn exploded...
But Deb and Eva are wondering if the car had not exploded and they were in the car, how come the parents did not make their exit before the car made it down the hill... Julio says... I bet they were already dead... then Marce doussed the car with gasoline and when she tried to lite it and used her hand, that is how she got burned. Then Deb and Eva say we are still missing the motive... and that is when Julio says 'i have that covered... same ol same ol! money!... then he tells them about Don Pedro's telling him days before the 'accident' that he wanted to sell his part of the agency and Julio had told him eh could not buy him at the time, that he needed to find someone outside.

Even though Carlos was right when he told her that his prospect for the future was great before he did what he did to get in jail, he did it out of love and now he is just a felon (his future is ruined)... HOWEVER, I agree that he went way overboard in his reactions, and after all, it was HIS OWN decision to do what he did, Alicia did not point a gun at him or even ask him to do it, so he can't really blame her for the consequences.

I too very strongly doubt that Alicia will have an abortion. My guess is that she will lose the baby, though, through a miscarriage, caused either accidentally or deliberately (e.g., Marcela's tea).

Thank you Elvira for the wonderful recap and pics.

I really have no idea what's going to happen to Alicia, and I kind of like that. Usually it's very predictable what will happen to the naive girl who falls for the wrong man--she will wind up with the galan's best friend. Not so here. First of all, of the galan's best friends, one is the villain that she is already involved with, and the other is his driver, who already has his own tangled love life. Also, this girl made a mistake with not just one guy, but THREE! Now she's pregnant by the villain. The thing that has made Alicia less sympathetic than other naive girls in other novelas is that she is not sweet and kind. Yes, she's basically a good person, but she's flighty and selfish. When Carlos got thrown in jail, she really didn't agonize about it much. She didn't think about his poor mom that he was supporting (the woman who had been kind to her and cooked her meals when she studied with Carlos), or that this guy with a promising future had now lost that. None of these things crossed her mind. She was just worried that Carlos would somehow rat her out to the police and pull her into it. He never did. He could have told the cops that Alicia put him up to it or even that he was doing it to cover up for her. He never said a word to the cops. Alicia’s record was kept clean. No, she did not make him do it, or ask him to do it. But the reason she seems so unsympathetic is because she really didn't give a damn about him. I think that's really what ticked Carlos off-- not really getting caught for the crime. It was Alicia's reaction (or non-reaction)- not coming to visit him, not calling or writing him the entire time he was locked up.

I’m glad he came to his senses before he really hurt her, and I hope he can put his rancor behind him now and move on.

Agreed that Carlos is responsible for his own actions. No question there. What is disappointing is how the writers have dealt with this specific character.

I think Carlos realisation was NOT that he was a convicted 'felon', but in the moment he stopped attacking Alicia, I think he came to the realisation that he had done it all for a woman who did not care for him or what happened to him. In other words: "I did this for HER?!"

Someone needs to clear this up for me. Just exactly what did Carlos do that made his crime a felony? I came in on this TN at about that time and I am still not sure if what he did was a felony or a misdemeanor. Furthermore, I've never understood why he languished in jail so long for this 'crime'.

Alicia needs to do some climbing of her own up Redemption Hill.

Susanita

I have no idea how long people get for these crimes in real life. Frankly I think he got thrown under the bus because he didn't have a good lawyer. That's often the key for getting a light sentence/getting off, and having the book thrown at you. As far as I can tell he was guilty of breaking and entering, stealing private information, and tampering with records.

Found this info on breaking and entering with intent. Keep in mind that Carlos broke in at night and opened a locked file cabinet:
“You commit Third Degree Burglary if you break into a vault, safe, or any locked container with the intent to commit a crime. Of course, the "crime" for which you must have the intent is usually theft in this case. This is why burglary charges often appear along with theft charges. Third Degree Burglary is a Class Five Felony carrying a possible sentence of one to three years in The Department of Corrections. In many jurisdictions in the U.S., burglary occurring at night is punished more severely than burglary occurring at other time. In California, for example, nighttime burglary was punished as burglary in the first degree, while daytime burglary was punished as burglary in the second degree.”

1-3 yrs... cool! thanks Vivi! that matches up with the time that has ellapsed in the novela.
And I agree that Carlos was mad at Alicia's actions or lack there-of while he was rotting in jail... and I too wish im to move on and forget her, she is not feeling the same for sure.

I like the Carlos guy. The actor is doing well with this role. Good looking + common sense appearing. Pls keep him around.

Did anyone else notice that Marcie was wearing two different Pearl earings when she was talking to Debra one was white the other gray . Weird

I thought they (whoever it was) said the Villanueva's car was pushed into a ravine? Did they say "barranca"? That would be ravine. Anyway, somehow that was the impression I got.

Audrey

Thanks for your recap Elvira and your pics. I never ceased to be amazed at the lack of brains the Gonzalez sisters have. At least Alicia realized she was pregnant rather quickly and broke up with Leo. (There is only one TN I have heard of where a woman actually had an abortion so I don't see that happening here.)

It's great Eva's connecting the dots regarding Murderous Marcie but now that they almost know for sure Marcie has killed, don't you need to leave the house (or make her leave)? Why does no one sense the imminent threat of having that woman in your house?!!

Thanks for your recap Jardinera! Just got to it today.

Really, the fact that NONE of the people who know that Marci tried to poison Julio (Julio, Eva, Renata, Alicia, Justa, Tia, the good Doc, Deb) have a real concern about Eva's family safety while living under the same roof as Marci is troubling. She tried to kill Julio for his money and his business. She killed Dan's parents for the money and the business. She forced a realtionship and marriage between Dand and Vicky for the money and the business. Eva now has her money and her business. That would make her, and all of those in her family, top on Marci's murder list! None of them have thought about this though. So it's not just Eva being stupid and naive. I'm glad that at least Eva thought immediately to tell Dan about his parents, and it looks like she does so tonight, now that the Julio cat is out of the bag.

Great work, Elvira. Even though he has a name, I like cute music label guy. There's nothing more to add to the recap--even though you claimed to be losing it.

Alicia is not in our typical novela. Normally, she or her family would "force" her to marry the offender (I know it takes two to ok, Tango) a la TDA. But this is a situation where her pregnancy would undoubtedly break up Leo's plans to marry Eva.

So, Alicia, do the right thing and fess up to Eva BEFORE you tell the putative father the happy news--you'll live longer that way.
Una Nte

Elvira: Loved all the pictures and your terrific recap despite "feeling like you're loosing it"! LOL! Thanks!

==========
ViviDC: ITA regarding all you brought out about Ali as a very unsympathetic character. She really is selfish and self-centered, not just with Carlos, but even with Eva considering she continued sleeping with Leo after she learned Big Sis was engaged to him.

Call me a psychic, but I don't see Alicia Puss-in-Boots officially reaching sanity until after she inevitably runs straight to Leonardo and goes "Yo soy embarazada! Now you can't marry my sister!" And Leo, after that initial "No puede ser!", will flip out and do something massively wrong--possibly causing another death in the process (Tony, Carlos, please pick up lines one and two)--and that will finally make our resident ingenue go "...my God, what did I do?"

the cute record label guy character name is Gerardo, I think. The actor is Vadhir Derbez (sp?), son of Eugenio Derbez adn grandson of a great actress Sylvia Derbez

Vivi, yes, everyone in that household seems to be 'knowingly living dangerously, Eva most of all.'

Vivi: Thanks for clearing up the felony case against Carlos. I never quite understood what it was that he had done. Gracias!

Also ITA with you re all of these people thinking it is just perfectly fine to keep Cruella in the house! Eva has stupidly fallen for every line Slime Bucket Leo has fed her re all of the reasons why Cruella has to stay. Wasn't Slime Bucket Leo in the process of finding Cruella an apartment? Has that gone by the wayside as well?

Bill C: I think you are so very right!

Susanita

Thanks for a great recap. I was watching Despierta America this morning and they mentioned that Univision will finally announce tonight when "Teresa" is starting and, consequently, when the grand finale of Eva Luna will be. There has so much speculation regarding how much longer this telenovela is going to last that it is nice to finally get an official end date.

usually once they begin saying the end date it is no more than 2 wks away so I guess it will be over early in april.

I agree with Bill. Alicia didn't break up with Leo after finding out she is pregnant, it was before. I can see her approaching him with this before telling Eva.

Elvira, Loved all the Dan pictures!! And thanks for the great recap. I love the detective stuff with Deb and Eva and Julio.

The Carlos scene was just strange. It is like the writers can't make up their minds which way to write him. I am glad he stopped before things got out of hand. I Have a feeling he will end up being a cuasuality in the end perhaps by saving Alicia with his life.

Thanks again Elvira for the fun read and again thanks for all the great Dan pictures.

Thanks for the recap and everything else what you did for us.
Alicia was drinking wine just before she found out she is pregnant. By my experience from watching so many novelas I can say that is first sign she will lose that pregnancy.
I don't like Marisol &Francisco's love story but I think they need to stay together. I was surprised how Marisol never was thinking how she will become famous and how all her clients will say" I'm very happy I had sex with famous Marisol".
Don Julio is annoying with his behavior toward Justa.
jjablan.
