La Verdad Oculta #120 Finale: All tidy, with a bow
After Juan José launches himself into the jungle, disgusted Leonardo maintains that's just why he didn't want the civilians along and orders Ramón to form an assault group. Up on the cliff, Adolfo marshals his small force against the attack, where he notes angrily they sent Juan José instead of Carlos.
But no matter, they have his woman, too; and he wants Juan José alive, to see the three hostages he's having brought up. They're mistaken if they think he won't kill each and every one, Adolfo shouts to the wind. Below the house, two goons capture Juan José, completely visible to Leonardo through field glasses.
So now they have another hostage, Leonardo grits out. The assault group is ready; and they advance, crouching through the thick underbrush, with orders to retake all the hostages alive. Meanwhile back in the D.F. at Mario's, Dora prays earnestly to be forgiven the constant urge to unburden herself to David about the identity of his father.
She knows it would kill him to learn the truth; and she prays for strength to endure again the anxiety and sadness of lying to him all these years. Back at the beach house, surrounded by guns and ammo, Adolfo empties the bottom of the bourbon bottle and nervously sweats out the wait for the attack.
Drunkenly brandishing his pistol, he laughs maniacally, threatening the women with a stray shot; just when the goons muscle Juan José onto the patio. Alejandra's hysterical at the sight and hearing Adolfo's order for the goons to shoot him with Juan José's own gun, before the women are taken below again.
Down on the beach Leonardo & Co. hear the shot, as do the women in their makeshift jail, making Alejandra lose her mind in terror and grief. But below the house, in fact, it's the goon who bought it; and Juan José absconds with his gun after overpowering him. The AFI assault commences from the rocks in earnest, and the battle is on.
The women can only jump back to relative safety and watch as outside the fight rages. Adolfo urges his troops on, but they are few and falling like flies; as Dante infuriates Adolfo by leaking out, he shouts at Dante's back for being a coward and keeps shooting. In the underbrush outside, Édgar, Valentín, a goon and Dante head for the launch.
Back in Mario's quiet study, things are nevertheless tense there, too. Yolanda comforts Santiago worrying especially about pregnant Gabriela, and she urges him to have faith everything will turn out well. Suddenly thoughtful, Yolanda reveals she's been pondering all the things she's done to protect Adolfo and why.
She's going to tell Santiago why, because tearfully she explains the secret is become an unbearable weight that's eaten her inside for years; and she makes him promise to keep the very personal, serious secret. Yolanda says her father was a cruel, merciless man; and her mother weak. They grew up surrounded by hatred -- and perversion.
Yolanda knows it's no justification, but it made Adolfo what he is. And suddenly it dawns on Santiago -- that Adolfo is Yolanda's brother! He is, she admits; but that isn't all of the story. When they found out the dirty secret of their origin, the two of them only had each other to rely on.
They reacted differently to the truth, with Adolfo full of hatred and revulsion -- and her wanting to hide, to disappear. Like when she tried to take her life and Carlos saved her; she doesn't want to try that again, which is why she desires to share her secret with Santiago.
Her name is not really Yolanda Rey, which is her stage name: her real name is Yolanda Ávila Ávila! Shocked Santiago hears that not only is Adolfo her brother -- and her cousin -- but that their parents were brother and sister.
Back at the beach, the AFI finally rush the house; while outside at the dock, the deserters board the launch. Adolfo's men are just about to murder Carlos and David when from behind, Juan José ambushes the goons and turns the tables. The good guys then hear the launch powering away and turn to blast them in a huge orange ball of flame into tomorrow with unerring shots to the fuel tank.
The AFI assault force enters the house and holds fire as Adolfo grabs the three hostages in front of him at gun point on the edge of the patio jutting out over the rocks far below. He demands the helicopter in ten minutes, or he'll eliminate the girls. He mocks David for trying to play the hero and trade places with Gabriela.
Leonardo orders Adolfo to lower his gun, because his men are going to kill him long before he's able to kill the girls; to which Adolfo shocks Leonardo threatening to never learn how his parents died if they shoot him. Adolfo entices him closer, explaining to vulnerable Leonardo that his father was probing smuggling in Durango.
And that Adolfo arranged for his mother and father to die in a fiery crash into a canyon; not only that, he arranged for a dirty doctor on his payroll to murder Leonardo's wife in the hospital! Leonardo hardly has time to react, when at that moment, Adolfo's gun clicks on an empty barrel -- and then another -- and another!
The girls desert Adolfo, leaving him teetering on the edge above the precipice; and then he tumbles over on a long fall to break his head open on the rocks below, with son Carlos yelling and running to the railing with Leonardo. Leonardo gazes at the splayed body below bitterly, regretting Adolfo didn't get what was truly coming to him.
Julieta comforts Leonardo for saving their lives, and as they embrace he cries that he's so tired of death; so tired. While across the patio, Carlos weeps piteously at the twisted figure below; Adolfo was bad to him, but he was still his father and he still cares.
How sad he had to end like this; how sad! Carlos sobs. David consoles Carlos, apologizing that it was Adolfo's destiny. As Alejandra runs to embrace Juan José, and Gabriela embraces David, their tension begins to break as they rejoice, relieved.
David is just promising Gabriela never to keep hidden truths again, when Dora phones; and David finds it oddly curious that what Dora was most anxious to know was who had killed Adolfo. Ramón approaches Julieta and Leonardo to report it appears several men were escaping on the exploded launch, including Dante.
The patio's blue pool of water is glassy and tranquil again in the twilight sky, reflecting the mood of the reunited couples, gathered around it and more relaxed AFI officers, who did their jobs. Back at Mario's, Yolanda is not finished surprising Santiago; there's even more to the story.
Adolfo drowned his unhappiness in alcohol and took advantage of all the women associated with his theater troupe. In particular, on one occasion he became insensibly drunk and set upon a pretty cleaning girl -- and raped her. This act, Yolanda continues, also resulted in a child. The woman -- was Dora!
Dora was a good girl and felt humiliated; Yolanda urged her to get away from Adolfo, whom she feared, and take her child far from him. Yolanda promised never to tell, which is why Yolanda never revealed anything about the accident at the hotel. Doesn't he see now, she asks: David is also the son of Adolfo Ávila!
And no one can know; no one! Santiago swears willingly for the good of everyone that this will remain their hidden truth. Some considerable time later, across town at a church to the applause of many and under bowers of roses, limousines pull up and deposit their beautiful cargo of four brides dressed in white with veils.
To a string quartet's wedding march, dapper tuxedo'd Asuncion leads Alejandra; Santiago his two daughters Gabriela and Julieta; and Abelardo leads Bertha down the aisle to meet their grooms in a huge, quadruple wedding, followed by flower girl Caramelo and ring bearer Chicles, who cleans up nicely.
In the crowd, Mauricio together with Mina smile and applaud as Juan José kisses radiant Alejandra's hand; and Dora beams happily as David joins Gabriela; grinning Santiago guides Julieta to pleased Leonardo; and Yolanda looks on approvingly as Carlos, grinning ear to ear, takes laughing Bertha from Abelardo at the altar.
Caramelo likes what she sees when Juan José pulls back Alejandra's veil; and each couple in turn reveal the brides, including Julieta with Ramón and Leonardo's daughter, Paula, looking on. Leonardo makes Julieta smile declaring how very pretty she looks. Each couple participates in the ceremony as it advances through the vows, rings and symbolic coins.
At the close of vows, in the audience, Mauricio threads Mina's hand with his and asks in a whisper whether she will marry him. Eyes wide with surprise and pleasure, Mina agrees and lowers her lids just briefly in thanks and relief for finally sending a good looking, good man who loves her!
The priest pronounces the quartet of couples married, and as they seal it with a kiss amid applause and cat calls, Santiago sends thoughts Gabriela's way from himself and in Mario's stead, that they are both satisfied today to see them setting off on their new path; while Dora thanks God and vows with renewed determination that David will never learn the terrible secret.
Asunción watches Juan José and thanks God for finally giving Caramelo her family and Juan José the happiness he deserves; as now-peaceful Mina watches Carlos and Bertha embrace enthusiastically and Yolanda wishes despite all Carlos's father did to him that from this day forward his way will be blessed.
Not a dry eye in the house as Santiago watches Leonardo kiss Julieta and speaks fondly in thought with his absent Márta, saying that wherever she is, she can see that their daughter will be happy. All the couples enjoy their wedding kisses as Caramelo showers everyone with flower petals and the audience showers them with congratulations.
Abelardo plays tour guide through the near future, first to introduce Gabriela and David's baby boy who looks like Mario -- and the news they are expecting again, with Gabriela insisting on working until she can't anymore, and David adoring his executive mom.
Then to a lawyer's office, where Juan José and Julieta rejoice with Leonardo at the news that Juan José is acquitted of all charges without a stain on his name -- and that they can legally adopt Caramelo now. Caramelo's ecstatic at the news she's going to have a baby brother, too.
Across town, Juan José has gone into business with Jorge with a brand spanking new, high-tech wood shop, where they produce a line of elegant furnishings for their successful upscale design store chain. With all the publicity of the case and Adolfo's death, Santiago returns to acting, even bigger than before; and Yolanda does, too.
Santiago and Yolanda share a chuckle on their television studio set after their writer scoffs at an idea Santiago has concerning a man passing for another person and fooling everyone, including family and the police. Who would believe that!
Fabulous original Mario returns in a scene Abelardo remembers where Santiago even fooled him as the double; and successful student Asunción stops by Abelardo in the office to discuss his favorite Spanish authors and poets. In the garden, Dora enjoys her role as grandmother to all the children, including Chicles who typically smashes a window with his soccer ball.
Abelardo expects to hear news Julieta will be bringing a new grandchild any time, while on Leonardo's beautiful ranch, he guides Julieta on horseback around the green, admitting sometimes he misses the adrenaline rush of police work; but that he's very glad to be at peace there on the ranch now. Paula seems happy to have a new mother, too.
Elsa visits Marcos in prison, looking relaxed, and pleases him saying she has found her place helping others and will be in charge of "Casa Hogar Caramelo," dedicated to helping the thousands of street girls like her. At his architectural office, Mauricio smiles at Mina, who beams back at him. They work together there now, in advance of their upcoming wedding.
Carlos and Bertha opened a chain of restaurants, as it turned out that Adolfo never disinherited him -- and he shared the fortune equally with Yolanda. Bertha contributes as an image designer for the chain. Abelardo tells the story that the infamous diamond shoes disappeared without a trace; but in fact, we see that Chicles carries a few of the brilliant gemstones around in his pants pocket.
Standing in Mario's office doorway, Abelardo is sure that his much-missed friend Mario would be happy at the way everything turned out as it should. His family is good; they're all blessed, or at least not restlessly pursuing happiness.
And if we want to know how David reacted to the news that Adolfo is his father, well, he still hasn't been told. He'd suffered enough; and as Abelardo closes the front door at the Genovés house, he says that for the time being, it remains between the story and us, the very last "hidden truth."
Or is it. After everything is tidily wrapped up in a pretty box, we arrive in New York City to put a bow on the gift that is this story. In an office there, Dante enjoys a nice laugh over the phone, explaining the joke on everyone back at the beach house dock, that he supposedly failed to board the launch to go back and help Adolfo.
But Dante simply absconded instead; and there he is, with his blonde female companion looking on. He hangs up as she turns, where we see she is not perhaps Zaida -- but Susana! And looking satisfied like a sleek cat after a dish of cream.
Things are very different in America this time, she notes with pleasure. And Dante promises her he'll treat her to a fine restaurant that he used to frequent with an old business partner, Adolfo Ávila.
THE END - "Dedicated to true lovers."

Part 6
In true TN style they kept any of the good guys from killing Adolfo. The post wedding scenes were nice and it was fun seeing how everyone ended. I'm thankful there was a happy ending for Elsa as well.
Not only was this a great TN, they even set it up so there could be some type of sequel (or at least short mini series). With Dante and Susana alive, it would be interesting to see what mischief they could stir up in NYC.
On a side note I think that our version (tonight) was edited b/c a few of scenes you described I didn't see. I'll have to check your you tube links.
Again thanks to Aribeth and Vivi for your significant contributions as well. And thanks to everyone who commented. This was a wonderful group and I'm sad this is ending b/c we had such thought provoking discussions about the characters and life. I hope to see you in the future. Take care.
As for the finale, I'm sorry to say it was a huge disappointment for me; although the surprise of Dante and Susana was a bit of fun.
"Grits out", "Drunkenly brandishing..., he laughs maniacally, threatening...", "The patio's blue pool of water is glassy and tranquil again in the twilight sky" amd "unwitting brothers" (and accompanying picture" were only a few of my favorites. A veritable treasure trove - Jeri's jewels indeed.
Jeri, thank you...for working on CS after the time change as well as starting and maintaining our wonderful LVO line. Your recaps were always inspiring and extremely thought provoking.
The finale met and lived up to the promise of superb writing and acting. As magnificent as Julio Aleman was, Hector Ortega's performance was also superb although more understated. Who else could still make us mist over the long ago departed Mario?? He was fabulous.
So many high lights. I hald expected to see Edgar and Valentin washed ashore, battered but not broken. In my mind, I am hoping that may have happened (especially as he spared Susana).
Loved the happy couples and Abelardo's narrative was the perfect touch. They chose just the right story for Elsa (at least for now). I know happiness and contentment are in her future.
I think only true closure can come when David is told Adolfo is his father. It is too heavy a burden for Dora to continue to bear. It was and is crippling her conscience. David can handle it - he has a loving wife and family, including his brother Carlos who will love and support him.
Loved Chicles and the diamonds. I wish we could have fast forwarded 20 years to see where the loveable imp ends up!
Of couse, I WANTED Edgar to turn around in the swivel chair but knew I recognized Dante's dulcet tones. Of course you were right Jeri, I thought it was Zaida and was shocked (and yet pleased) to see Susana.
Karen, love your idea of a sequel. Susana and Dante take New York :)
I'm not quite sure how Susana dn Dante got together. Was Edgar in on it (he had to have been as he spared her life, correct?) Any insight on this would be appreciated.
I'll be commenting more later but special thanks to Aribeth, Vivi and Jeri for taking us on this wonderful ride. You were the perfect guides.
Can't wait to read what everyone else has to say.
Far and away, the best finale EVER!

As I watched the wedding, I was so glad I wasn't invited, I don't really like two of the brides, hate faking a smile for hours!
Jeri and Aribeth, I'll properly thank you for the your last two recaps if I can get to a library today....more later.
Thousand thanks to:
- Jeri thanks for writing two recaps per weeks and uploading the ones I wrote

As I said many, many times, Julio Alemán for president. The way he (and the director) portrayed Adolfo's downfall and madness was awesome.
Congratulations to my Ale for having 3 beautiful children: an 8 (9) years old little princess, a baby boy/girl and a handsome 30-something. She must be so proud. Hopefully JJ calmed down after clearing his name, having a family and finding his place in society.
I watched the ending of El camino secreto, there the narrator said Gaby and David had two sons. So I assume the next baby will be a little boy, too. :)
Asunción became a bookworm! LOL.
Elsa healed thanks to time and a good psychologist and she became the mom of many children. Her scene with Marcos was touching, her brother obviously found his peace, too, and I'd like to imagine that after leaving jail he helped her.
Bertha is the luckiest bitch ever, but I believe she never harmed her family again. And Carlos was a sweetheart, as usual. His crying over Adolfo's dead body was heartbreaking.
Chicles is officially the mini goon. He'll become a very cool young man. Good luck to his future girlfriends.
Caramelo grew up at JJ and in casa Genovés, where she had two moms, two dads, three uncles and an aunt. Not bad from a child who had zero future before.
Susana is alive! Susana is alive! Susana is alive! *jaws on floor* And Dante survived the battle. As long as they don't try to hurt our people I don't mind them together.
I didn't like:
- The way Leo's case (the death of his parents and wife) ended, it was rushed. I guess his investigation got more screentime in ECS.
- Mau proposed to Mina on the wedding. Okay, maybe 3 or 4 weeks passed by, but come on, man, are you that desperate? :) But they were adorably cute in their short scene at the design studio.
I'd like to mention the wonderful (good and evil) characters who died but who were so memorable:
Don Goyo, that old, crazy rascal, played by Eric del Castillo.
Mario, "the best man on Earth". Period.
Roberto, our entertaining Gollum.
Adolfo, the most elegant son of a b**** ever.
Psycho Eddie, who became a very likeable heir of Roberto's legacy, and his twin, Valentín. You both died in one of the the worst.CGI.explosions.ever.
Btw, Valentín played one of JDD's fishermen pals in CS2009:

01:03 (LOL)
Also, thank you for reminding us of: "Roberto, our entertaining Gollum". Yes. How could we for a moment forget???
Will visit your gallery - I am sure it will be marvelous!

That's a big life change for Juli, marrying and moving way out to the ranch. Maybe there's a local university or police force and Leo can teach police work or be a trainer?
I'm glad that Elsa ended up alone instead of with an insta-boyfriend. Some people are meant to end up alone, because the work they're here to do requires them to be unattached. Elsa may be one of those who is meant to end up alone romantically, but filled with love from and for others.
I wish we had gotten a quick update on Ulises and Zaida.
David's never shown any burning desire to know who his bio-dad is and Adolfo is dead, so unless Baby #2 comes out looking like Adolfo, besides knowing that Carlos is his brother and Yolanda his tia, what's the point in telling him? David was spared from being messed up by Adolfo like Carlos was; perhaps they should keep it that way. I don't even think Carlos knows that Yolanda is his tia.
Ha! at all three of Marta's children getting married on the same day.
Mauricio's desperation was established when he was trying to run Elsa down the aisle.
Bertha married Adolfo for nothing because Abelardo revealed Adolfo never changed the will from Carlos getting half and Yolanda getting half.
Thank you Vivi for Friday's recap.
Why were David and JJ allowed to have and use guns during the rescue operation. Were they 'deputised' by Leo. In real life that wouldn't be on at all.
Loved how Abelardo was narrating the after events, and it was especially touching to see the real Mario once again. Nice scene.
Aribeth, I too thought Mauricio proposing to Mina at the wedding was weird. What is he a pathological proposer, lol. Very strange.
I liked Elsa's new life helping children. That was beautiful.
Chicles has the diamonds, hahaha. How did he get hold of them.
I must say that I felt very sad at Adolfo's end. So he was David's father as well, never expected that. Adolfo didn't know either that he had another son, I would presume. He was real mean to Carlos, but remember when he also kicked David when he fell from the wheelchair.
Susana must have hooked up with Dante after. I don't think that Dante was in on Edgar's plan to hide the shoes with diamonds, etc and fake Susana's death. Wonder whose body was really in the grave.
and finally, where is Zaida. Was she the friend that Ulisis went away with???
Margaret
Also I want to say a big thank you to all the people that were part of this blog. You all made it so much more enjoyable for me with all your wonderful and brilliant comments.
I can't believe that this novela has ended. Just shows you what a wonderful journey it was.
I will miss this blog very much.
Margaret
I can recommend watching the whole thing on the You Tube links. :-)
Congrats to those who thought David was Adolfo’s son. I guess my block on that is that I always assumed that Dora had a relationship with David’s dad, and I could never picture that between her and Adolfo in a million years. Knowing that it was a rape, makes sense to me. I think they should tell David and Carlos. They have a right to know that they are not just in-laws, but actual brothers.
Yay to me for totally guessing the incest thing with Yolanda and Adolfo’s parents. But I thought they would be father and daughter (like in Mi Pecado), not brother and sister. For some reason that creeps me out more. I suspect there was a lot more detail that could have been given about the perversion and cruelty of their father, but I think we and Santiago can imagine it.
I loved Elsa’s end. Yes, she did say to her brother that she was getting herself psychological help. The work she is doing is the perfect fit for her personality and the things she is passionate about. Good for her!
I felt a bit sorry for Leo. I think life on the ranch is too slow paced for him. He will need to find something else to fill his time. I would have like to see more about his story and the story of his first wife and parents. Sounds like it could have been a novella on its own!
Bertha got off easy, but some people are just lucky that way. I think she will continue to be a bitch for the rest of her life. But as long as she’s not put in a position where she has to choose the well being of her family over her own benefit/gain, then she’ll stay on the straight and narrow. I am sure she will eventually be one of those rich ladies who acts super proper, will never admit to her own wild past, and will be very judgmental of others. But she will be adored by her husband and loved by her kids and family.
I love that Santiago and Yolanda returned to acting. Could there be any future love there?
Meaning Yolanda and Adolfo's parents, not Adolfo and Yolanda.
I'm with you about Leonardo; now that life as a cop might not have such personal consequences, he might go back to it.
After all, it's apparently in his blood, since his father died investigating Adolfo's smuggling.
Aribeth, Jeri, and Vivi, bravo on your wonderful recapping over these past months! Your storytelling skills are superb, and I feel so lucky to have read your writings on a daily basis. Thanks so much for all your effort, dedication, and patience. Watching LVO every night has been so much fun, and you’ve been like shepherds leading me through it.
All commenters, I’ll miss the fun here but hopefully we’ll “see” each other again on this blog.
Aribeth, thanks for the photo gallery. It will help me with my LVO withdrawal. : )
My first reaction to Bertha as the 4th bride was "What's she doing here? She doesn't merit." Then like a faithful family member, I thought "Carlos loves her, so let it go." I thought all the brides looked sensational and understated (no clashing) and that EY looked especially elegant (unlike in his civil ceremony).
So glad to see Yolanda and Santiago back in the acting game. Loved seeing JJ start a furniture-making business with Jorge and seeing Asuncion into reading great literature. JJ has gotten back to his roots. He never looked comfortable at the hotel. The reveal of Susanna at the end was a very neat touch. So Psycho Eddie wasn’t sooo psycho after all.
I'm happy that Elsa found her calling and started a children's center. I guess she got the funding for it from JJ. I still wished though that there had been just a smidgen of a scene, like Ramon dropping by for lunch with Elsa at the children's center, to indicate she has formed new friendships (not romance yet), in addition to her ties to Marcos, Caramelo, Asuncion, and JJ.
I had come to believe Adolfo and Yolanda had been forced into child prostitution as kids. Finding out they were brother and sister raised by an incestuous father was a jolt. I can see why Yolanda would cling to material things to gain self-worth and Adolfo would treat everyone like scum.
I feel LVO ended too soon, but as stripper Gypsy Rose Lee said “Always leave them wanting more.”
EY alert: He’ll be a guest star March 22 on NCIS Los Angeles on CBS: http://www.tv.com/ncis-los-angeles/enemy-within/episode/1377401/cast.html I've never watched the show but will certainly check out EY.
As for Leo, I envision a father-daughter investigation team sometime in the near future...
And I agree with you about David and Carlos -- especially Carlos; I think he would like to know he has other family: a brother, and a real blood aunt. Yolanda would be a great-aunt (instead of grandmother) to his kids in reality as well as spirit. They never need tell anybody about the incest.
Thank you all for the many kind words and thank you so much for being fabulous participants.
A very special thanks, Vivi, for keeping Aribeth and me sane and for your terrific incisive insight into the characters and situations.
question of who would be the best parent for Cara, but JJ and Ale it is! I went from kinda watching, sporadically saving episodes for the weekend, to an addictive need to watch the program every day even using a cell phone, and now taking up space in a library to post! Who would have thought Susana would be alive and with Dante in NYC? Whose the heck dental records were those? This has been a fabulous journey with wonderful commenters, I respect every one of you..... My only regret is that it was too hard to respond to every good thought!
Oh yes, after missing bread crumb after bread crumb on Bertha, I'm allowing myself a pat on the back on Yolanda and Adolfo. Like you Vivi, that was a really hard story to hear, brother and sister. I thought it was another Chinatown or Mi Picado as well.
Most of the credit goes our top notch recappers, they are three of the very best. I knew in the beginning when “chapter and verse” was being quoted, I was in a brilliant place. Our team has taken enthusiasm, accuracy, a flair for expression, research, relevant tidbits and reliability to the highest levels! Thanks Jeri, Aribeth and Vivi, you all did an outstanding job ...Muchas, muchas gracias!
It will be hard to ever equal our La Verdad Oculta experience......but maybe Teresa or PVAA???
Un abrazo muy fuerte y hasta luego a todos!
Sandy
Some secrets will remain hidden like the fact that Adolfo is David's father. The biggest surprise was at the scene before the FIN of seeing a very much alive Susana (who I thought was Zaida) with a very much alive Dante in New York. Wow. Not your typical ending but this wasn't a typical novela. I'm pleasantly pleased with the outcome.
I LOLed when Leo spoke for all of us when he called JJ" estupida" for rushing off like a bat out of hell only to be caught by Adolfo's henchmen.
Speaking of which, seeing Adolfo sitting at the chair and drinking a glass of Bourbon reminded me of the scene in Scarface when Tony Montana sat at the chair, high as a kite, and about take on the mob as a one man killing machine.
Anyway, I was surprised that Adolfo fell over the railing to the cliffs below. I thought for sure someone would shoot him especially after her admitted to Leo he was the one responsible for the deaths of his parents and his wife. LOL that Adolfo's gun had no more bullets after the big reveal.
I had a CS flashback when JJ yelled that he was free after his criminal record was expunged.
Glad to see that Elsa found new meaning for her life and that she's helping other orphan children like herself. Nice wrap up story for her and of course Mau and Mina hooked up and are getting married.
Finally, to the fantabulous three recappers, Jeri, Aribeth, and Vivi, I salute you. Job well done ladies. This has been a wonderful group and I will miss it very much. Hopefully, I'll see you all on the novel recaps for the other novelas.
Jeri, do you remember the first or second week when you told me I shouldn't write too long recaps because I would burn out quickly? I said, oh, these are the first episodes, the characters and the situations need long explanations, but later there'll be hundreds of filler scenes when I could take a rest.
Yeah, I was completely wrong. Fortunately! :)
There were only a few filler scenes, and yes, there weren't useless episodes at all.
***
I agree David and Carlos should be told about their father and aunt. Why not? David survived so many things.
Pirate Babe:
The Dark Lord Sauron was defeated, and all is well in Middle-earth.
Oh, my fellow LOTR-fan. :) Sauron is dead, and surprisingly, he and his many lame henchmen will be missed.
I agree, it'll be wonderful to see an LVO2 or a spinoff with grown-up Caramelo and Chicles (I want either a romance or a very strong comradeship), Dante and Susana, and the children of the protagonists. I agree with Vivi about Bertha, and I think a 40-50 years old Madame Bertha would be a perfect character for a Blanco/de la Pena show like Mi pecado or El manantial. :)
LOL that Chicles stole the diamonds. He's definitely a handful. I too wanted to know what became of Zaida.
However:
Thanks so much to our faithful recappers who interpreted the actions and relationships so expertly and with such entertaining story-telling.
Thanks so much to our viewing family who kept us on our toes when describing past events and forecasting future twists and turns and revelations.
It was a lot of fun and am looking forward to meeting many of you again.
Hasta la vista, bebe!
Newbie-One-Kanobe (formerly Newbie in MD)
Jeri, thanks for the tidy ending with a bow. Your wrote a great title and a wonderful finale for us all. I would be wondering about so many things without your well written details. I wouldn't have been able to enjoy this novela without you and you managed two great recaps per week, as well....very amazing.
Aribeth, your comments have me laughing...Ale and her three kids, faking a smile for two hours, Chicles the mini goon, the worst CGI explosion ever (and how did they ever manage to shoot that boat anyway) and Edgar, the very likable heir of Roberto's legacy. Thanks for the screencaps which I'll check out later.
In all this was a satisfying last few episodes, though I don't know why Dante or someone else didn't plug Adolfo as they could see he was losing his mind. Kudos to Julio Aleman. I guess Mauricio was ready for love and found wonderful Mina but it did seem a bit rushed and a tad desperate. But then why wait if you are sure. I wish somewhere in the story Bertha would have had to spend the night on the streets and scrounge for food and shelter. For all her evil, she never had to really suffer the consequences of her behavior. I thought both Adolfo and Yolanda were sexually abused or prostituted and not the children of incest, so I was surprised by that.
Will Chicles and Caramelo be friends or a couple as adults? Will an adult Chicles us his devious mind as a crime fighter for good, I hope? Will he use the money from the diamonds to conquer the world..for good, I hope?
Niece, thanks for the E Y alert. I won't have to go into complete E Y withdrawal. I'm wondering if he'll be a good or bad guy though it really doesn't matter. I remember someone mentioning he doesn't have any plans for a new novela...maybe taking a break. Hope he is back soon in a novela as good as LVO.
Thanks to Jeri, Aribeth, Vivi and the commenters for a fun journey.
Adios for now.
GinCA
My woord verif is cheer. Cheers to Jeri, Aribeth and Vivi!
GinCA
Aribeth, you are infrequently incorrect; but I must admit, along with everyone else, I'm so pleasantly surprised we had a roller coaster of a plot.
I remember Cheryl, the chica from New Mexico who left the country mid-show, said after she watched the entire thing on You Tube that the plot rocked on till the very end. And she wasn't wrong, LOL.
Thank you! :) But the faking smile was Sandy's comment, I love all four brides, even Bertha. Though I didn't mind the scenes in which she suffered a bit, she deserved that.
However, I'm not a big fan of weddings. I love the melodrama and pink scenes in telenovelas, but in real life I can't stand cheesiness, speeches, the tears of the newlyweds and the parents, so I would definitely got nauseated after two hours at the Balmori/Guzmán/Genovés/Ávila/Victoria/Faidella wedding. But probably the sight of the five beautiful men (Dave, Leo, JJ, Mau, Carlos) would ease my pains.
I agree with Jeri, your comments are always appreciated.
Niecie, thank you for the EY info! I knew about the guest appearance but I had no idea the episode would air so soon. As for telenovelas, the big guy said he spoke with two producers already. There are three producers who may create something valuable in the future: Lucero Suárez (Querida enemiga, Zacatillo), Lucy Orozco (Teresa 1984, Ramona) and Carla Estrada.
I'd love to see him in Orozco's show, well, as long as Lucy gets an opportunity from Televisa. A friend of mine knows her on facebook and a few months ago Lucy told her she was looking for a good script. And of course she wants to give a role to her best friend, Helena Rojo. The few Helena/Eduardo scenes in CS were fantastic since they're both charismatic actors, so what about giving them more opportunities to work together? :)
Carla would be great, too, but if she wants to make another historical telenovela (yawn), it will be hard for me to watch her.
Cheryl- If you're out there reading, I hope you are still having a wonderful time in Mexico.
Jarocha- Thank you for all your insight. Keep working hard in grad school in DF. But make time for fun too!
To all of the commenters-- You ladies are just fabulous. I loved dicussing and debating this fun tn with you.
To all you lurkers-- This is your last chance...I hope you enjoyed reading the recaps and comments.
Like real life, no? When some people have kids, they seem to be naturals at it (like Elsa). While others have to grow into the role (like JJ and Ale). But that doesn't make one person more worthy of being a parent than another. All parents make mistakes, learn along the way, and have their own unique style of parenting. So we were never going to come to resolution in our debate because there was no right answer.
I don't think I could add much to the comments, except to agree that I enjoyed the final and that I also worry about serial proposer Mau. I also thought this is a very intermarrying group with Carlos' half-brother marrying his half-sister, etc.
Thanks again,
Pascal
I have no problem with Gabi and David getting re-married alongside Juli and Leo. I don’t even begrudge Ale and JJ joining in. They already had their wedding but the reception was ruined by Adolfo so okay, include JJ and Ale. But…I have a huge problem with Bertha and Carlos getting a Happily Ever After. I thought the underlying premise of TNs was that in the end, the good people get rewarded and the evil people get their punishments. Bertha’s actions led to people being murdered, kidnapped, blackmailed and terrorized. But Bertha didn’t get any punishment whatsoever, instead – Ta Da! – she gets the guy, the money, the big wedding, family acceptance and a way cool job. Now I didn’t get to see all of Passion, so I didn’t see all the bad doings the blind girl did, but at the end she was gang-raped by bandits and left to wander the desert blind and alone. The writers of LVO didn’t need to go that far, but I would have liked to see at least a good family shunning and a cheap elopement.
The shoes, the diamonds, the photo, the letter, and the cufflinks: these were more than props. They were the reason the story happened as it did. Yet, none of these amounted to anything in the end. The shoes, the photo and the diamonds "disappeared" and nobody cared. Really? And the fact that it was Chicles who absconded with them rubbed salt in the wound. Just once I would have liked to have seen an adult punish him and actually teach him to keep his hands off what isn’t his. Just once. And wouldn’t it have been nice if those diamonds had ended up on the fingers of Gabi, Juli, Ale and maybe Dora, Elsa and Yolanda as well since all of them suffered because of those gems?
Dora. I really hated this storyline, it was the weakest of the TN. Dora was supposedly terrified of Adolfo because he raped her and got her pregnant. We know Marta died 20 years before the story started. David was born and adopted by Mario and his wife before Marta died. Dora didn’t go to work at the Genoves house until after the maid was murdered. JJ was released from prison 11 years after the maid’s murder. So Dora spent at least 9 years working in a hotel Adolfo owned where she could run into him in the halls at any time? Oooo-kaay.
Mauricio and Mina and the Out-of-the Blue Proposal: Mr. I’m-Desperate-to-get-Laid hooks up with Ms. Please-Somebody-Marry-Me. I’m good with it.
Elsa’s storyline ended well, but I would have liked to have seen where the funding for her facility came from. My guess is from Asuncion as JJ and Ale have no love for Elsa. I would have liked to seen some closure to the Elsa-JJ storyline.
Yolanda and Adolfo: My hubby was nearly right. We figured the document that Leo removed from Adolfo’s safe was Carlos’ birth certificate that named Adolfo as his father and Yolanda as his mother. The incest would have been brother-sister between Adolfo and Yolanda. It made more sense that way as it would have explained Adolfo’s intense hatred of Carlos. It would also explain why Marta never told Santiago about Carlos – because he wasn’t her child.
The surprise twist ending: I can buy Dante getting away, but Susana’s body was identified by dental records. Unless there was corruption in the police ranks (imagine that!) and Edgar was actually working for Dante all along I don’t buy the Susana thing. Zaida and Dante ending up together would not have been that far-fetched since Zaida was still alive and the last place she was seen was at Dante’s office. I think the Susana thing was just the writers throwing a bone to the viewers who were upset by Susana’s killing.
The Abelardo Show: I liked Abelardo but all along I’ve been thinking that Abelardo reminds me of Mr. French from Family Affair. Mr. French (Abelardo) watched over Buffy (Caramelo), Jody (Chicles) and the pretty, moody teenager Cissy (JJ).
Overall I thought this was a really good TN, I just felt after 119 episodes they owed us a better finale.
Elsa’s storyline ended well, but I would have liked to have seen where the funding for her facility came from. My guess is from Asuncion as JJ and Ale have no love for Elsa. I would have liked to seen some closure to the Elsa-JJ storyline.
Abelardo said she got the money from the government. JJ/his household weren't involved, thought it would've been nice - and no, they would've given her money. Don't forget that JJ risked his life for her twice and Alejandra isn't a cold-hearted witch either. They didn't hate her, they just had a very complicated love triangle/quadrangle/custody situation.
I'd also like to know what happened between them later. She was allowed to meet Caramelo whenever she wanted and it's hard to imagine her abandoning the kid. Though maybe she decided to distance herself from JJ for a while, until she managed to forget him.
Actually, Dora didn't work at the Hotel Mirador for years. It was a brand new hotel just opening when the murder of the maid happened. We don't know what she was doing in those years between when Adolfo raped her, and she found herself working in a hotel that he co-owned (well, the restuarant portion). Perhaps she didn't even know he co-owned it until she saw him later, as she was following Mario's businesses in order to be close by to David.
And I can't say you're incorrect about most of those points; but I'm just not holding their feet to the fire, LOL. I'm taking their word for it, even forgetting the letter.
The one thing I might want to take up is that there was a certain element in the show of people who were atypically shown being fond of money, but nevertheless rather sympathetic.
I kind of identify with Yolanda and Carlos, if not exactly with Bertha, when Yolanda told Bertha the other day that she "loves money!" And the show doesn't make the love of money evil, as they sometimes do. They just tell it like it is.
1) When Edgar earnestly told Susana that he would not hurt her and would find a way to help her, in exchange for her telling him all about the diamonds and photo, I believed him. He was usually a man of his word, so I was really shocked when it looked like he had broken his word and killed her callously. I am less shocked to think he somehow engineered her way out of the country and hooked her up with some shady characters that would help her out.
2) Edgar had some friend on the inside of the police department, probably many. He used to be in the service, and we saw that friend give him info on Elsa's case. Someone on the inside could have easily put Susana's name on the dental records of some already dead woman.
It's not hard to make another leap to guess how Susana and Dante could have hooked up. Just think about how those shoes ended up in her and Marcos' hands in L.A. and then made their way back to Mexico and back to their source! That was one convoluted, complex journey, but it made sense.
I have no problems with Susana being alive. It happened so many times in movies that the dental records were fake. My bet is on that Eddie had corrupt friends inside the police.
Btw, I never really understood this dental records thing. I mean, I know every person has unique denture, but how on Earth does TV/movie police find records of every single person? I'm very touchy when it comes to my teeth and I visit dentists frequently, but none of them have panorama photos of my mouth. What about people who don't even go to the dentist?
evidence in the end to put away Adolfo or free J J. Adolfo self destructed with all his kidnappings and the other evidence was lost or irrelevant. All Adolfo attempts were futile in the end. He did himself in. It would have been nice to see the evidence used to tie up the case but it was too late. For me this novela, for the most part, was so much better than many shown in primetime and it did move quickly with little filler and I loved all the cliffhangers. Pretty great acting all around too.
GinCA
Therefore, it follows that JJ must have taken the stuff home and Chicles being Chicles (he is after all a budding kleptomaniac, lol) found the diamonds and didn't tell anyone.
xlntperuvian, you mentioned the fate of the blind girl in Pasion. That was the most cruel ending for a villian that I have ever seen in a novela. It ruined the whole experience for me. Everytime I think of that novela my mind just zooms in on her fate in the last episode, of her on her hands and knees begging for help. Just horrible. I just can't get past that. She didn't deserve that fate at all.
Margaret
I thought it was pretty cynical of the writers to have Susana's throat cut soon after her long coma and after Edgar showed he had a heart, so deep down I was hoping she was still alive. It would be nice if she found a way to let Marcos know. He did love her.
I had never seen Julio Aleman before and I must say he became my favourite character to watch by the end. What a great and complex villian he portrayed.
LVO was one of the better novelas. Never a dull moment. I wanted to watch every episode, not like most novelas these days.
Margaret
Marcos will probably be in jail for a long time for his role in killing Don Gregorio, the jailbreak, hawking the stolen diamonds, etc. I kind of don't blame Susana for skipping Mexico and hightailing it to NYC. Even if she let Marcos know and waited around for him, what kind of material life would she have? Being a maid in a Genoves-style household? Maybe shoplifting and hustling? Why do that when Dante is offering her the good life in NYC?
Xint, you made such good points. As I watched the last episode, I saw each major star's head rotating around in a giant diamond and I thought that somehow they should have worked the diamonds into the finale in a stronger way. I've never liked Dora either, but most novelas treat maids and lowly workers differently, I'm just used to it.
On Bertha, it was sad to see a cunning, selfish person win it all, but we've all seen it before in real life haven't we!
My schedule is only good through that weekend and doesn't show Monday the 21st yet.
Again, thanks to everybody for their participation in this great group; it has been a pleasure functioning as the "team leader."
And I would like to send a special thanks to Melinama for hosting Caray Caray and giving us the opportunity to have fun here. :-)
Jeri, yes, so glad you mentioned Melinama - thanks to our blog mom for her support.
Again, thank you Jeri - you were the captain that steered this ship and gave us the cruise of a lifetime. Gracias.
Diana
Just FYI, I sent Melinama a thank-you note on behalf of all of us for allowing this Insomniacs Club group, which was kind of a departure for Caray.
It was generous of her, and I'm glad it turned out successful.
Breaking news, though I don't know if it's true. Maxine Woodside likes to make up things.
Jeri- Thanks for sending the note to Melinama. We were lucky that this experiment worked.
I just watched my recording of the 1st episode of PVaA. Great beginning! Adult themes and real situations. Wonderful acting. I think I'm hooked. :)
Re Lucha - world's worst mom;
she never checks her son's pockets
to see what might be lurking - although of course I did enjoy Chicles.
After all the comments about Alejandra adoring Caramelo, there were no scenes with the 2 of them
until after the wedding.
Re the brides, I liked Julieta the best, the most natural with loving kisses between her and her new husband - saved the mad passionate kisses for a more private moment;
Although, I cannot stand Bertha and think she got everything she ever wanted with only a few bad moments, she did look cute and was quite natural as a bride (her second (or 3rd) wedding as well).
I was wrong about Limon; never thought he would rise to the occasion of reading Cervantes.
Hector Ortega did an excellent job
with a range of emotions.
I never could stand how Gabi walked; it was like prancing with tiny steps - odd looking to me. I thought all of the other gals walked normally.
I did love the surprise ending with Susana but thought that the beginning and middle of the novela were far better than the Finale.
I was disappointed that Leo did not analyze the blood in the warehouse as he said he would.
It was Yolanda's blood and would have led to Adolfo much sooner.
There were some weak links in an
otherwise terrific novela.
Re Mauricio - When I was in college, I had gone out with 2 guys at different times for about 2dates. At the end of the 2nd date,
I told them that I did not want to pursue the relationship. They were both literally crying and extremely upset - which made me like them less, but at the end of the evening, each one asked if I had a friend to recommend. I did so. Both of them went out with my friends and fell immediately in love with them. All I could think of was Maurico on the rebound -
yes, Aribeth, I agree,; how desperate can you get?
Of all the gals, I liked Elsa first and Julieta next. I am glad
Elsa has found a noble calling,
and has been commented, she is young. She spent years loving JJ,
but she didn't really love him
for awhile because she did not like the person he had become;
she loved the original. She wanted to find a combination of romantic love and a good, honest guy to boot. Mauricio was not the one. I very much disliked the fact the way he called Elsa stupid although he had thrown in a few compliments.
Of all the guys, I ended up liking
Leo the best. His character was strong. JJ continued to be a disappointment, and David's role
was not strong enough.
Of course, I loved Yolanda, but she was in a category of her own.
I never thought of the incest between Adolfo and Yolanda.
Is this just a guess?
Adolfo too was in a category of his own and the star of the show.
A very emotional and physically challenging role.
Sandi, I always enjoyed your comments.
Thanks again, Aribeth,Jeri, and Vivi. I did not miss one episode.
You are all awesome!
One of the teachers here saw Teresa. It ended 2 wks. ago in
Antigua, Guat. She liked it but
not the ending.
Is this the plce to keep checking
for exciting news of other novelas?
Thanks to all for all of your comments. I enjoyed them
to the fullest.
All the Best...Floridia
Like you, I would put Elsa at the top of the LVO respected characters. I saw threads of strength in her in the beginning, but also felt she was a bit of a victim and needed to take more control of her life. By the end, she was in complete control and even a trailblazer in the sense that she was no longer waiting for a commitment from JJ, but was giving a commitment as a " Tia" to homeless children. Forging ahead without a galan in a novela is about as strong as it gets!
Adolfo's character did steal the show. I wonder if the writers, after seeing Julio take command of every scene he was in, decided to de-emphasize the illegal jewel trade and make Adolfo's crazy emotional breakdown more important in the finale. They should have brought the jewel smuggling in at the end to make for a more cohesive beginning---ending.
Floridia, I enjoyed your posts as well, along with the insightful posts of the entire group!!!
I wish we had a place to comment on EY's appearance in NCIS! I have that on my calendar.
Just read your comment about Scarface. I was thinking exactly the same thing about Adolfo in that drinking scene!
Sandi, Thanks for your reply.
Jeri, Vivi, Aribeth, is it possible to check in still for notices of future novelas, etc.
or will this blog cease to exist?
I think it's a nice idea to use this last entry to keep touch, especially since we're kind of anticipating upcoming "Teresa."
After that, if we like Teresa, we could hang out there. And btw, I haven't been able to locate a start date for Teresa on Univision yet.
Also I don't know if we would be as lucky to find it in its entirety posted on You Tube like LVO either. That was amazing, and I hope they leave it up for future reference.
I'd love to keep touch here. :-D So go on ahead.
I'd love to keep in touch. I have 3 more weeks here in Antigua, Gua.
and will tap into Teresa when I return.
Hate to part with good friends.
All the best....
Thank you so much to Aribeth, Jeri and Vivi your taking the time and effort to write this wonderful recaps for us and I enjoyed the comraderie on this line so much. I was reminded of the wonderful times on Gancho and I hope we see each other in another telenovela line, maybe Teresa?
Anyway, I enjoyed the finale and I was content with most of the character endings except for Mauricio's proposal wich kind of made him much more desperate than I expected. He fell inlove hard and fast for a second time.
My best wishes to everyone.
Jarocha
I watched part of the first episode of PVaA and really enjoyed the wedding scene with all the couples transitioning through their vows...while they were still happy. It seemed a bit too emotionally intense for me to watch every night.
Thanks again for the info on EY in NCIS LA this coming Tuesday, the 22nd. I'll watch for certain.
Nice hearing from you all.
GinCA
I watched the NCIS episode. First of all, I like Chris O'Donnell, Linda Hunt and LL Cool J, so it was a pleasure to watch them. Big Ed had a short scene in which he played a Venezuelan politician, the target of an assassination attempt. He wore a stupid moustache, he flashed his 1000 smile and made a speech in English and Spanish. My withdrawal is eased for a while, now I'm waiting for the supposed Univision telenovela. :)
Nice to see EY for even a little bit. With the moustache, I thought he was channeling Vincente Fox's persona.
And they got the charismatic part right. It was a pretty good episode, I though; well written.
Jeri, I thought the LA version of NCIS was more disjointed than the one Mark Harmon is usually in. ...Just thought I disagree for old times sake!
I miss "our" LVO!
This was the first time i watched this show and I love the set decoration. Maybe I'll tune in next week
Big Ed, how I miss yee and the LVO recappers and commenters, too. I'll try to catch D A for my E Y fix.
Looking forward to Teresa.
GinCA
GinCA
I'm such a fan of the original. All the characters are so adorable, it's hard to choose just one.
And I only discovered it a couple months ago; went and bought all the season sets.
I'm just finishing season 6 on the DVDs, but I keep up to date on the new episodes, which are season 8.
I did think that the LA, EY version held its own, I was interested until the end!
they are moving TDA to 10 p.m. eastern and putting Teresa in the prime time slot.
Tentative schedule:
7pm/6c -- Una familia con suerte.
8pm/7c -- Eva, until replaced by Cuando me enamoro.
9pm/8c -- Teresa.
10pm/9c -- Triunfo del amor.
*rant ON*
Please, excuse me for my language, but f*** Univision. They put TDA to 10 pm, but they put CS, LVO and PVAA to midnight? Why couldn't they put them to 10, too? It would've been hundred times easier for people to follow these shows and maybe we would have had recaps for PVAA, too.
*rant OFF*
But at least we'll have Teresa at primetime. :)
Back from Guatemala..thinking of watching Destilando by recording it; not planning to stay up that late. I am very much interested in the opinions from the experts on this novela; I found the 2007 recaps. How did you all like it?
I like EY, Julio A, Sergio Sendel,
René Strickler, and I like the heroine, Saraí Meza (although have not seen her previously.)
Apparently Silvia R. has a small role in this as well. ..also interested in seeing Chantal Andere
whose mother is still going strong.
She too is an unknown for me.
All the best,
Floridia
