La Pola - June 16-17, 2011

Readers: This is a very abbreviated recap of Thursday and Friday.

HACIENDA DOMINGO – GUADUAS

Cata has dreams of Juliano, but when she wakes, Domingo is beside her in unending confusion and conflict. Gertrudis keeps trying to get her to drink the fertility tea and to do her duty. When she realizes that Pola is leaving for sure, Cata tries to get Vivianito to live in the house with her, but even he prefers to live with the slaves in the barn.

Meanwhile, Domingo goes to see the mayor about getting rid of the complaint brought against him by Juliano and Pola. After some discussion, the mayor convinces him to free a slave to make amends. Domingo will allow the firstborn of Juliano and Nicolasa to be born free.

Domingo meets with Juliano and tells him that if he withdraws the complaint, he will allow his first child to be born free. Nicolas, as we know, is taking ruda (rue) to bring on a miscarriage. The slaves are looking for remedies to save Nicolasa. It is as this point that Domingo notices Cata’s interest in Juliano and wonders aloud why this slave is so important to her.

Pola tells Cata that she doesn’t know how she puts up with that beast Domingo. Pola takes a parting shot at Domingo by calling him a coward who hits indefensible women.

MANSION IN POPAYAN

Alejo can’t sleep. He wakes Leandro, whom he assumes has more experience that he has with women, and asks Leandro if this can be. Maybe, says Leandro. The thought of Pola is driving him crazy, and he just can’t fathom what is happening to himself.

Iggy continues her crying jag and now claims that she is pregnant, but no one must know. She later tells Francisco that she feels terrible, but Francisco assures her that it is all for a good cause. Fran tells that to Alejo who is shocked, but who, of course will keep the Secret. Francisco is desperate because the dowry is to be delivered this afternoon.

Alejo is very suspicious of Ignacia’s accusation and tries to pin Acacia down as to how much time she left then alone. Alejo sees Ig talking to Fran.

After Fran loses the gold (see below) he returns to the manse and starts drinking. He tells his wife what happened and says that he is celebrating the marriage of my miserable son. He is now mad as he**.

GOVERNOR’S PALACE IN POPAYAN

Well muses the gov, it looks like Francisco owes a big debt. The gov knows that Fran is about to receive the dowry and think that maybe he can pay up now.

The receiving of the dowry proceeds. The governor announces that Ignacia and Alejo will be married, and he reads out the dowry – gold, jewelry, clothing, furniture, etc. Francisco receives a bag of gold. There is no turning back now, and Francisco and Gaspar sign the marriage contract.

The governor- when everyone has departed -later tells Francisco that he has real problems and orders the guard to relieve him of the bag of gold.

SANTA MARTA

The priest is caught with too many groceries and the soldiers follow him home. They grab Tonito, but Nariño comes out of the shadows and tells them to set Tonito free. They are headed to Cartagena thinks Nariño. He pleads for his son. Then they are told that they are going to the Castillo de San José in Boca Chica where he will be kept in solitary confinement. Tonito loses it and calls the man an assassin whereupon he is told that they will never leave there alive.

THE REVOLUTIONARIES

Don Jorge reads a document that is a demand for equal rights. He still thinks that they will prevail before the King of Spain (royalists). The others do not agree with him. For some reason Baraya wants to find a way to persuade the vireina to support them. He can threaten to expose her dalliances to her husband.

POLA ON THE TRAIL

Pola decides to stop at the monastery to see her brother, and a good man whom she had accompanied, shows her the way. The long and short of this visit is that her brother is reminded that he cannot be a priest if he is of mixed blood. Although he talks to Pola, he denies that he is her brother.

When Pola arrives in Santa Fé, she has to resort to begging to survive. She tries the house of Doña María Matea, but the maid tells her the doña is not in and later lies to the doña about it, too. She ends up sleeping in the street. She goes to the cemetery where her parents are buried. She tells her father that he was the only person who saw good in her. She promises to fight his fight and she swears to do what he could not do.

MANSION

Alejo tells Francisco that he doesn’t believe what you have done. You are not my father. He lies and says that María Ignacia told me everything. María is an idiot says Francisco.

No, says Alejo finally, she didn’t tell me anything – I knew it had to be your idea.

Thanks Pasofino. I'm just now getting back to the computer after the weekend. I expected many more comments about la Pola than there are. Maybe everyone else took the weekend away from the computer. Your recap is wonderful and I certainly appreciate it.

I realized early on (when they were children) that Catarina was obsessed with Juliano. I thought for sure from one of the previews that they'd finally get together, but it turned out to be a dream/fantasy... I'll bet that it actually happens this week.

I can't tell for certain, but it looks as though Domingo is having a change of heart about his slaves. It surprised me that he offered to pay Nicolasa's medical bills.

Wasn't that a beautiful song played Friday as Pola woke up in the street and had thoughts of Alejo? I tried to find it but couldn't. The first word was mirame.

The actor who plays the priest who betrayed Nariño and Toñito is very good and costars (along with a beautiful Dogo Argentino) in Bombón el Perro, a very sweet and beautifully filmed movie.

This week should be lots of fun and very exciting. Surely Nariño and Toñito will escape from jail.

Carlos: Thanks for your comments. I think a lot of people are watching this, but just not commenting.

Anyway - I said this last week, and I'll say it again, I will try to make the weekly recap shorter.

I, too, loved the music. Every episode has something wonderful happening in it.

Pasofino, I clicked on the la Pola recaps link on the side bar and the last one listed in the index is last weeks. Maybe some of the usual commenters are not aware that you posted this weeks recaps.

Carlos

i was tired of being first or loudest or whatever and decided not to post until somebody else had!

but yes, thanks again, pasofino! i salute you! (doffs silly tricorn hat in your direction)

i think the trouble is there's not much to poke fun at about this, and one can only post "i love la pola!" so many times. and the questions i might pose usually get answered by the recap! still, i do my best with idiotic comments, thankyouverymuch!

i have to admit, i got so excited about la pola, i looked more carefully at the wikipedia entry, and read one of the "for further reading" suggestions, and got the other one out of the library. if anybody knows of romance novels based on this period, please tell me! exploring the facts will show some possible spoilers though--i guess you never know if the script will follow history, but there are definitely some names to recognize.

gosh, i really hope nic hasn't damaged the baby! it's a TN so of course it will be fine, but could you imagine if the plot ran that way? she damaged the kid cuz she didn't want him to be a slave, and now that he'll be free, it turns out hes got horrible birth defects instead? ouch!

boca chica! almost better that guaduas! it's a song: boca chica guaduas boca chica guaduas! or bowchica wow wow.

oh and maria matea's back, baby! i sense some good things are going to happen for Pola. did you see the head of hair on that kid! watchout justin beiber, there's some new hair in town. i wonder if he will grow up to be one of the rebels in jail when the show started. i distinctly remember seeing Jonny from Herederos Del Monte in lockup, but we've not been introduced to his character yet. he's cute even if it looks like his eyes always point way out to the distance. slight walleye? i'd smooch him if he asked!

and how funny was alejo's expression when Igg said she was pregnant! he was thinking, that dream in the river with la pola...maybe i was actually with iggy but to fevered to realize it. these poor kids have been taught nothing about sex. does he even know how babies are made? i think he might believe it was true even if he hadn't had a "wet dream." (get it? wet dream? har har)

getting off topic, carlos, your link made that friggin song from Fuego ELS stick in my head. bombon assesino! ugh. and then i watched the you tube thing and was thinking--hm that's not a pitt, he's much more muscular through the legs, i wonder if it's one of those what'cha callems. and then i realized that i skimmed too fast and Dogo Argentino was NOT a beautiful actress costar in the film! i saved it on neflix!

mai tai, I agree that there is not much at all to mock here... although... did you wonder how after after the prisoners were transported down the river in the little boat (boats?) how the horses managed to get to the campsite that night Nariño and Toñito escaped?

You mention the good-looking guys... I think that Magdalena is one of the most attractive women I've ever seen, and I was so annoyed over her relationship with that little twit Jorge Tadeo... I definitely want to see him get his.

Unlike you, I'm expecting both the baby and Nicolasa to die. I hope that you are right.

I forget that actor's name but he is so good in Bombón (as is Bombón).

Carlos

Carlos and MaiTai: I love your take on things. I don't know why this isn't posted to the sidebar. If anyone out there can check behind me, please do. I posted it the only way I know to do so.

the women in la pola are all hot hot hot by anybody's standards, i think! well maybe not gertrudis.
iggy, cata, mags, pola, maria tadeo, maria matea, nic, and the joven pola and cata. even the horse is named bonita!

Pasofino,
It looks like you have both postings tagged as:

La Pola (with a space).

Try tagging it as:

LaPola (no space).

I'd fix it but I don't know how to retag someone else's posting (or I haven't been granted that superpower)

that song 'Mírame' is so beautiful!! it's sung by Marta Gómez. i had to write down the lyrics and google it.
needless to say, i keep rewinding the episode to simply listen to the song. it made me fall more in love with 'Alejo.'

Pasofino, it can't be easy to recap an entire week's episodes. Thanks for all your hard work.

This show is by far the best thing on TV right now. I'm a happy camper given that I have Alborada in the afternoon and La Pola in the evening.

To K Demonio and Shallowgal and everyone else. Thanks for you comments. This is definitely challenging. I've thought of posting daily, but, with my erratic schedule that is not possible. I'm trying to shorten it a little, but, after I look at my notes for the day, it seems that the details do matter.

pasofina, i keep wondering if there's anything we can do to help you. my translation skills are iffy, but i feel like i owe you, and i'm with you all the way!

what's the name of the sandy brown haired colonel? he was next to alejo many episodes back, eavesdropping when someone was making announcements in popoyan. he hasn't had a big role yet, but he pops up. he's maybe 50-55 yrs old?

too bad pola's going to have trouble with her new roomie. i feel for the woman though, when was the last time anybody bought her some earrings?

love the scenes where pola and alejo were physically close but didnt notice each other. who else was screaming "turn around!!!"

i'm not exactly sure what don francisco was up to with the gobanor, but it's clear it was slimy, dastardly, unfair and ugly! booooo francisco!
