La Pola - August 23, 2011 - The War Begins, Discussion Page

The rebels led by Nariño continue their march to Popayan. The first shots are fired as they encounter Sámano’s forces standing guard on a bridge that leads to the city. Nariño sees the trap and orders his soldiers to retreat and then he orders the artillery to bombard the hills. Sámano’s forces are routed by this determined band and by his bad judgment in dividing his army.

Sámano orders all munitions in the cuartel in Popayan to be blown up with no warning to civilians in the area. Leandro escorts María Teresa, who suffered a minor wound in the explosion, and Eusebia back to the mansion. Francisco looks for a safe place for himself.

Pola will not be stopped either by Alejo’s pleas or by Nariño’s orders. She will fight.

gracias, la paso! that was an exciting episode! i can almost smell the gunpowder. really cool details, like the different bugle calls to indicate when to retreat, and when to screw on your bayonettes and screw up your courage!

the little valley was gorgeous, and the sheer numbers of soldiers made it super-believable. i bet this show got a few more male viewers in colombia if there are war-nerds like the US has. my only complaint was that somehow ciro, who was backing away from the action ended up hit by cannon fire that i think came from narino's side. maybe i'm wrong cuz that would be nonsense.

and i liked the fist fight between iglesias and what-is-name (something like alloyvero?), though the foley artists were working over time to punctuate the soundtrack with punches.

on the girly side of things, how awesome was pola's green coat? i want one!

Mai tai: Ciro was hit by one of the rounds from the artillery fire ordered by Alejo. He seemed to be on the point of telling Domingo something - like maybe what he did with Joaquín?

Another observation - Nariño asked what king these so-called royalists were fighting for since Fernando VII had been removed from the throne and Joseph Bonaparte was the new king.

And this detail about Sámano's character. He was the first to turn tail and head away from the battle when he saw he was losing.

Thanks Pasofino. Marta posted a detailed recap of last night's episode on yesterday's posting. I think that indeed Ciro's infidelity was not killing little Joaquín... I certainly hope so.

Carlos

Carlos: I see what you mean. Martaivet posted the details on yesterday's page.

Thank you Marta. Sorry for the miscommunication.

Thanks so much Pasofino for your excellent resumé of last night's events. And Marta, thanks for the more detailed account (posted on yesterday's page). I'm grateful to you both for keeping the discussion alive.

Oh Leandro, Leandro. Why don't you see that Sámano is just like your father -- a greedy gasbag, a bully, a coward???

So Domingo bet the farm -- literally -- on getting killed and now he's mad at Mr. Universe ... um, I mean ... Juliano ... for keeping him alive.

And Ciro proves he's the big coward we always suspected he was. Did we see his last gasp? Or was it his next to last gasp? Tell us where Joaquín is before you head on down to Hades, Ciro!

Novela Maven,

"Tell us where Joaquín is before you head on down to Hades, Ciro!"

Well put. My thought exactly.

Carlos

Ciro: Now we know the origin of the word cannonfodder.

Mai Tai - I too love La Pola's coat! I told my husband I want one just like it!

Juliano looks so handsome now, I'm so proud of him for taking the high road and saving Domingo's life. Now we just need for cowardly Ciro to reveal what he actually did with Joaquin.

I can't wait to see Francisco get his! I think I dislike him more than I dislike Samano!

Pasofino, i was not aware you would put a different page each day from here on out... i can post my summary after you post today's page.
Poor Leandro... i am afraid that he has realized how alike Samano and his dad are... and it will be too late for him...
love the acting on Alejo... i could see the worry about Pola and the knot in his throat when Ciro was hit by the cannonball.

I want one of Pola's coats too!!

Martaivett: I'll post a new page tomorrow and each day thereafter until .....the ending we don't want to see or hear.
