La Pola - September 13, 2011 - Discussion Page

Summary: Pola plans the successful escape of the Almeida brothers. She and Calendaria prepared some special chicha for the guards who fell asleep on the job. Alejo steals a kiss from her before he leaves. He is obviously still disturbed by thoughts of her being with another man. Pola tells Ambrosio that under other circumstances, she would be interested in him, but her heart belongs to another.

Alejo leads his band of patriots through spectacular Colombian countryside. They spend the night at a church where the priest is a sympathizer. In the morning they head out to Los Llanos, but the Spanish army is in pursuit. They head up a path that leads to a palisade from which there is no escape. Alejo wants to fight, but Arcos talks him out of it. They surrender.

In Santa Fé Sámano orders all relatives regardless of sex or age of the Almeida brothers to be placed under arrest. His focus now is to trap Pola.

Readers: This is short because life and work intervened. I'm still giving Alejo a little slack by reason of battle fatigue, now known as PTSD.

María Ignacia is like a black crow in the background. All her praying yielded nothing. She is still the same self-interested spoiled brat who now holds people's lives in her hands.

Isn't it amazing how one person's actions can change the destiny of so many? Maria Ignacia is too ignorant to understand the consequences of her actions, but that doesn't mean that I forgive her.

I also blame her mother for coddling her.

Alejo is not a leader - he should never have been left to be the "brains" of this operation.

Time is short for our beloved novela - as soon as they stop showing advances for the next day you know it's almost over. I will miss this one terribly.

Alejo never asked to be the leader but he does have some natural leadership skills... remember he imposed his 'rank' on Iglesias when he and Pola found each other now... and he instinctively 'takes over' when there is no leader around... (back in the Santa Fe battle he took care of teaching shooting and leading the artillery groups.)
The priest is well known to them, he used to travel with Narino's troops when they had the battle where Leonardo died. He is the one that Narino asked to make sure all the dead got christian service... so he knows them well, that is why he referred to all 4 of them by name and is friends with Alejo and knows about him and Pola.

I don't think Alejo screwed up that badly. He made the right decision and acted on his hunch asking the priest to have someone catch up to them if the priest realized they were being followed. The guy did reach them just in time right before (within an hour's trip and scope visual range) they reached the other group. And he was very unselfish in his decision to lead the enemy troops away knowing chances are it would cost them all their life. Where he was silly was in intending them all to engage the enemy and getting themselves killed for nothing... he should remember that as long as there is life, there is hope, or at least that is what he told Lopezito when they were about to get executed. Good thing Arcos was there to poke some sense into him.

I agree that Eusebia has a lot to do with how MI is... She has facilitated her selfishness... and always been in her side, even when Gaspar has other thoughts/opinion.

Pasofino, I know all about 'life and work' intervention, i was doing work stuff until 11pm last night so dont you worry. we know what its like.

Pasofino, Thank you so much for posting. I'm so grateful that in spite of your busy life, you give us Pola addicts a place to come together and wring our hands.

And yes, María Ignacia is a harbinger of evil. Did you see how she smiled at Sámano when she was condemning an untold number of souls to death? I have tried to make excuses for her ignorance but I can't do it anymore.

I thought Alejo was great last night -- although I'm glad his comrades dissuaded him from making a suicidal last stand.
