La Fuerza del Destino #65 Fri 11/04/11 A Bite of the Apple for Ivan

[Please excuse the delay.  We've had the internet out all this weekend.--ed.]

As Viewerville heads back across the Rio Grande to peek in on small town life in Alamos, Carlota has suggested to Lucia that she take a page out of her old book by marrying a man to give her kid a name and a respectable father figure, somebody that loves her and wouldn’t consider it a sacrifice, somebody like Camilo Galvan who later admits to Carly he’s in love with said expectant mother of his BFF’s 2nd child; in the California city of Lost (as in fallen) Angels, Ivan is reminding Maripaz that she’s there as Mrs. Ivan on a pass as it was the only means he could get partial custody of Alex, so fade into the wallpaper and/or find some other way of making herself scarce as hen’s teeth; and shocker of all shockers, anti-authoritarian Antolin has told the family that he’s turning a new leaf and taking a respectable job at the Ag Association offices to work as Juan Jaime Mondragon’s right hand man—or henchman, as his younger brother says he thinks is more likely.

Anto doesn’t take to Cam’s …er… harshly critical assessment of his big brother’s chosen career path and the two nearly come to blows over the kitchen table over it.  Carmen tries to “brighten” the conversation with a question about how Saul Meandragon is doing.  Big mistake!  Anto jumps on her with both feet and tells her to forget the sorry son of a sawbuck if she knows what’s good for her.  Cam heads for bed, still in a crab-assed mood, and Mama Arcelia tells Anto she can’t make heads or tails of it.

The next day, Cam visits with Lucia and wants to ask her to marry him but can’t get the words out of his mouth.  He gets only as far as stating he’d do anything in the world for her admitting why: because for a long time now he’s been in love with her. But that’s where it ends cuz Cam loses his nerve after seeing Lucia’s jaw drop.  He walks away, leaving Lucia to wonder if he got word from Carly that she’s preggers and was maybe broadly hinting at wanting to help her out of a bad fix.  Why?  Cuz he just finished telling her he’d been in love with her for a quite a while.  Carly smoothly denies that she’d ever tell him something like that!  Lucia believes her and says she’s certain that if he knew she was expecting another man’s child he’d want nothing more to do with her for sure!  Uhm-uh-hmmmm.

Cam goes back home to discuss the situation with mama.  He tells Celia that Lucia’s expecting Ivan’s child.  Hoh-boy, says Celia.  Cam explains Carly’s proposition and says obviously it’s to keep the town from gossiping, tho’ everyone will anyway because they all knew she was seriously dating Ivan.  He doesn’t care, tho, that they might because he has loved her from the day he met her.  It’s more that he’s torn because even if Lucia might accept marrying him, he couldn’t do this to Ivan to whom he owes so much and because he’s like his own brother!  How could he face Ivan once he finds out that he’s sleeping in the same bed with his mujer [lady-love/lover]?  Celia wisely points out Lucia was his bedtime gal pal, but she isn’t now because Ivan hooked up with another gal.  So, the question is, does he feel he could marry a woman who not only is preggers with somebody else’s kid, but is not in love with him either?  He would love the child as his own, he tells Mama.  It’s not the child’s fault he’s somebody else’s.  Yes, but what about being married to somebody who doesn’t love him?

At the same time, the Meandragon clan—with the exception of Juan Jeil-me—are visiting Saul in the hospital they managed to transfer him to.  The sight is shocking for the family, and they apologize for not getting there sooner, but it was all they could do to convince Juan Jeil-me to let them come.  Well, thanks, he says in all sincerity, but it’s been hard going through that all alone.  He tells them he’s facing numerous operations and doesn’t even know if Papa is going to pay for them or not.  David’s willing to give him all his savings but Saul says it’s going to cost a fortune and he’s not likely to ever save enough to cover it.

Back in the Galvan kitchen, meanwhile, Cam tells his mama he’s certain with time and attention Lucia is certain to fall in love with him.  Besides what’s Ivan got that he hasn’t—aside from the big bucks, which don’t mean squat to Lucia?  He can give her a decent life free from unpleasantness and hardship.  Yes, says Celia, but Love is something else again. He’s got all the right stuff, but Love is not something you can control or direct.  It either happens or it doesn’t—and it’s not a sure bet.  That may be, answers Cam, but he can’t abandon her in her time of need.  He loves her too much to allow her to become the butt of everyone’s jokes in Alamos.  No, he’s ready to marry her whether she ever comes to love him as much as he loves her.  The problem is that he feels like a traitor to Ivan!  “--Hah!  I’d say the traitor is really Ivan, don’t you think?  He’s the one who chose another woman.  He left her to marry her sister instead.”  “—Yeah, but he did it for his child.”  “—And aren’t you doing it for Lucia’s child?” He turns away in frustration, overwhelmed with the onslaught of conflicting emotions.  “—What’s important is that you’re marrying a gal who isn’t in love with you, so think about it son.  Think about it.” (Viewerville starts thinking that Arcelia is the kind of mother we all should aspire to be, perhaps.) They hug.

Across town at the Meandragon lair, the family returns to plead Saul’s case to have Juan Jeil-me agree to pay for his numerous operations.  JJ at first tells them he could give a flip and that since it was Saul’s fault for driving drunk he can pay for his own operations.  Esther has had enough and lights into her husband, telling him she loves Saul like he’s her own, having raised him from a baby and she refuses to let him abandon his son like this.  If he won’t spend the money, he might remember that she came with a bit of her own into this marriage.  Not to be outsmarted by a woe-man, he gives in and agrees to cover all the “damned expenses” himself, then grumps off.  “—Satisfied?”  I guess so!

Days pass.  Antolin seems to be taking his job at the Association pretty seriously; The Curiel Clan move in at Suckers’ Ranch; Carmen flirts with the ranch foreman; Alex starts school in Lost Angels.

While they’re unpacking some of their things, we get a PSA on pregnancy not supposedly a debilitating illness (say what?) and learn that Cam hasn’t contacted Lucia again since telling her he was in love with her.  Carly hints that Lucia might actually miss him being around, and of course, she denies it.  Carly suggests that she call him instead.  Lucia says no way.  Once Carly leaves to check on the curtains, Lucia finds out from Gloria that Cam’s been coming daily to check on the harvest and does know that this is the day they’re moving in.

Back up in L.A., Merry Piece is on her way out the door when Alex stops her to ask for help with his homework.  She tells him to ask his daddy; she was never good with schoolwork, anyway.  Alex states point blank that she really doesn’t love him does she.  Nope, she says.  “—You were only useful to get your daddy to marry me.”  She goes on her merry way out the door.  Just so happens that Anthony overheard the conversation and the look on his face shows his compassion for Alex at that moment.  He artfully takes the conversation in a different direction.  Benito arrives at that point—and this time is all legal thanks to Mr. Tony’s mouthpiece.  He mentions that he passed Merry Piece on the way and she ignored (?) him.  Tony says she pulled the same stuff on him too.  Big whoop.

At Suckers’ Ranch, the foreman tells the others that Arcelia and Carmen won’t be coming back anymore.  He offers his single, childless, boyfriend-less sister to help Gloria.  Gerardo shows up then.  He notes that Lucia is looking a bit pale these days.  Carly’s eyes go wide with cover-up fright.

That evening north of the border, MP is gambling the night away with her old school chum and the school chum’s hubby.  School Chum’s hubby may be bi-lingual, but his hands are tri-lingual as he has Russian hands, as Merry Piece happily notes.

Gerry tells the women that he’s got weeks more repair work and that it will be noisy there for a while.  Lucia asks after Alex and learns he’s talked to Carolina daily and is doing okay at school.  Lucrecia asks about Merry Piece.  Gerry’s tone turns abrupt.  “—Alex doesn’t even mention her.”  Lucia and Carly worry about Alex growing up without a mother figure—and you can count Merry Piece out in that case!  Ho hum, laments Lucia, a child needs a mama and a papa.  Poor Alex has no mama and my child has no papa.

In town, meanwhile, Judith and Cam are sipping sodas on some restaurant’s side patio.  Jud confides in him and explains that her father is pushing her on him even though she’s already explained they are only friends.  He is surprised.  Well, she says, now that he’s heard Cam’s general manager of McGuire and Son, Papa JJ sees him in a whole different light—dollar green.  He offers to explain to JJ but she says no, it’s her problem and her place to deal with him, not his.  He bucks her up telling her all the wonderful qualities she possesses and not to take his rejection personally, it’s just he’s been in love with somebody else (who shall remain nameless) and it’s something that can’t be helped, blah, blah, blah.

At Gerry’s, Caro is crying over missing Alex being there.  He tries to console her but she is certain that the longer he’s away the distance will drive him further away from them till he doesn’t remember them at all.

Anto tells Celia he wants to propose to Carolina.  She’s thrilled and asks him to bring her there to live with the family.  He thinks she’ll want some place nicer. (Excuse me, but the gal’s blind.  How’s she going to know from fancy, anyway?  What stupid writer got that line past his supervisor?)  Celia sagely says it’s the quality of the home life, not the house, that counts.  Anto agrees and smiles at her.

In L.A., Ivan wanders the house and chats with Tony for a while afterwards.  He knows he’s got to bury Lucia’s memory somehow in order to get on with his life and to do the right thing for Alex.  Tony suggests going out with friends and doing things to get his mind off her.  “—Blow off steam somehow.” [Desahogate].  He tries calling Lucia but can’t reach her.  He checks on Alex for the night Ivan then heads to bed to hit the hay for the day.  Ruh-roh.  Merry Piece is standing next to his bed, buck nekkid under her silk robe.  “--I know you miss her.  Let me help you forget her.”  The robe drops.  They kiss as a cacophonous hiss goes up all over Viewerville. “—You need it as much as I do, Ivan.”  They kiss some more and he goes with the flow, imagining he’s making love to Lucia instead of her bruja of a sister.  (Ivan, you scumbag!)  Afterwards, he wanders the house, wanting to kick himself for the jackass S.O.B. he and the whole of Viewerville now consider him to be.  “—Dios mio.  What did I do?” The raven of wrath appears and Bruno is on the scent.
Van wanders into the moonlit game room and kneels by the table behind one of the cueballs which rightly should have been an 8 ball, cuz damn if he isn’t behind one by now for sure!  Tony walks in and sees what a mental state he’s in.  “--What’s going on?”  “—I’ve made a serious mistake, Pops.  When I got married I promised myself I’d never sleep with Maripaz, but I’ve just did exactly that!”  Cara de choca de Anthony.  “—You should understand that from this moment on, Lucia is dead to you.”

Gracias Jardinera,

Could not believe what I was seeing & Iván wasn't even drunk or drugged in novela style, just a typical man. Now I suppose MP will be pregnant again, not much time for protection. I guess that means when Lucia & Iván finally get together, they start with 3 kids.

Oh.Em.Gee. Thank you for recapping this horrible episode. Up until Ivan the Slime said out loud "what did I do" I kept telling myself it was some sort of effed up nightmare/dream sequence.

Ivan is dead to me.

So sorry you had to recap this mierda.

Wow - I just can't believe they went there!

[Ooops! I was supposed to keep my mouth shut!]

Audrey

Jardinera, you outdid yourself! I am still chuckling at your descriptions of some of our favorite moments. Cacophonous hiss indeed.

I'm trying to figure out who the black bird is aiming for. Am I wrong that it appears only with Merry Piece and Camilo? Methinks the only way to get our star-crossed lovers back together after Ivan's misdeed is a couple of well coordinated deaths.

Although I got a good giggle out of the description of Carolina's assessment of Arcelia's, I have to disagree a bit. IMHO, Carolina doesn't have to see a thing, as long as she can hear the fighting-at-every-meal that goes on at Camilo's, it's a bad, sad place to be. I'm surprised that the entire family doesn't suffer from serious eating disorders.

Holy cow. Just read something in another forum. Maybe it's been mentioned here.

If Saul is the maybe rapist won't his and Ivan's DNA be somewhat similar?

Not that this has anything to do with last night's horrible episode (and again I thank you, Jardinera, for taking one for the team.)

I am just so annoyed by this TN right now.

ok. breathe. just.a.show.

:-)

Thanks, Jardinera, loved your opening sentence / paragraph; very flowing. Even the huge geographical detour across the Rio Grande, which usually would bug me, was poetic.

We knew this was coming; at least they pulled the band-aid right off. Men are scum, and weak besides, and this guy has abandoned all hope and just doesn't care.

I would, though, like to hear the words "We were on a break!" in spanish... ["Friends" reference, for those who didn't watch it.]

LOL Gato Viejo! Something very similar is happening over on Cuando Me Enamoro at the moment, and just yesterday the galan basically had to use the "We were on a break!" excuse to explain to the heroine, his WIFE, why he had sex with another woman and got her pregnant with twins while they were separated. Not an easy conversation. I think Ivan will actually have an easier time explaining this eventually, than Jeronimo is having explaining his weak moment right now on CME.

However, I did not expect Ivan to fall so quickly or so easily. I was shaking my head and tsk, tsking the entire time.

Thanks so much Jardinera! The recap was superb, and not late at all.

just caught up with a week's worth of capitulos today--wow. This novela gets worse and worse! Pobres David and Judith (I like you, J, although growing out those bangs might help with the boys... there aren't many that go for the 12-year-old look). I hope we get some new personajes to give these good guys (and girl) a happy ending!

QUE the heck is up with those weird Ivan/Lucia love scenes? So bizarre... in a chicken coop with satin sheets??? Hilarious!!

I'm kind of taking solace in the Antonlin/Carolina story... corneal transplant/delinquent actually seems refreshing normal...

Thanks for the recaps!

Ivan really lost me last night. He was able to resist MP before he knew what a skank and a female dog she was so WTF??? I was so sure this was a nightmare of his.

What almost shocks me more is how brazenly MP told Alex that he was only useful in her entrapment plan. How could she be that stupid? It's a bloody shame Tony didn't tell Ivan about this.

Lucrazia will have a major hissy fit when she finds out about Lucia being pregnant.

Jardinera, your recap is a work of art, much more than this TN deserves!
Sara, your comments were hysterical, I give you honorable mention.
Yeah, Ivan is weak. But pul-lease, this whole TN is sleazy. And yet, I watch.
Ivan's mother was born out of wedlock, and Ivan is born out of wedlock; Ivan has a child out of wedlock, and now Lucia is pregnant, and Carmen had a child by Saul, they aren't married or even dating. Carlotta was pregnant by someone other than her husband and had Lucrezia. There are more illegitimate children than legitimate. The whole town is related to each other, can't the people in that town think of anything else to do but have sex???

Thanks for the recap Jardinera. Great recap for a lousy episode.

I really like Arcelia. She seems for practical and thoughtful. I like how she tries to reason with her kids in a logical manner without mincing words. Sometimes they are not ready to hear her good advise but she tries.

I'm glad Maripaz told Alex the truth about how she feels about him. It will save him heartache in the end.

Ivan - nooooooo! You disgusting stupid moron!!!!!!!! Why didn't you go to an "amigita" instead of her???

Camp Camilo - Party of 1.5
Aka Vitriol Quazi

Actually, now that I've slept on it, I think that Alex will tell Ivan about this very shortly. He has no reason to withhold this from him and Ivan will definitely take it up with her. Be prepared for a big fight!

She has no grounds for divorce or annulment now that the marriage is "consummated." However, since she has blatantly stated that Alex was just a pawn in her game, Ivan has grounds for either. And when she fools around with her former classmate's husband he will have more grounds plus a scandal.

However, he should put all his company assets in Tony's name first so that MP can't claim any share of them after the divorce. He should be willing to give her a half million dollars US as a lump sum with a restraining order keeping her away from himself, Alex, Tony, their home, and anything else. If she violates the restraining order, she must return the money.

Thanks as always, Jardinera.

So Friday night on The Real Housewives of Alamos Ivan went and consummated his marriage of convenience...honestly I can't gig him too much on this one. For worse or worse he is married to Maripaz; he couldn't be with the woman he wants to be with--who's been avoiding him anyway--and he's honorable enough to not go astray and hit up some no doubt big-haired caricature of an L.A. prostitute. At least they went for the cliche of having him picturing his true love during the act...because lord knows Maripaz doesn't deserve his full attention, and likely won't have it anyway once Alex drops the bomb about what she said to him.

By extension, that gives us another Why The Hell Are You Protecting Them? moment: Tony heard Maripaz say that she used Alex to get, right? So why the hell didn't he go straight to Ivan with that knowledge?

Ja, Ja Bill,
"for worse or worse.
"Can't blame Iván too much", spoken like a man & I doubt one could turn down MP, except in novela land, so at least that part is realistic.

In the real world both Toni & Alex would run RIGHT to Iván with that bit of info, but again this is novela land.

I bet Lucía y Camilo's boda will be a civil ceremony too.

Yahoo! I finally have internet access again! I was actually having to think of something worthwhile and productive to do physically once more if this continued much longer.....

Thanks everyone for all the nifty comments.

Ivan (the jerkwad) doesn't even know why he did the deed--which sucks. Woe is thee you with the willpower the size of one of Bruno's fleas. I figure I'd chalk it up to physical needs and that MP was just the vessel, literally, as it were. Still and all, if she gets preggers then what's Lucia to think? If she doesn't, MP will still have a grand time grinding Lucia down to her own snake-in-the-grass level by bragging about what a sensual high it was for both of them, and then lying that he thinks MP is so much better in bed than her kid sis, making up fake pillow talk and all sorts of bitchy stuff like that.

Why Tony didn't mention Alex's run-in with MP may end up being something we never learn--or he may keep it for a divorce trial once she heads to the sack with School Chum's Hubby's in som ritzy-ditzy no-tell hotel room somewhere.

I don't think that it would be news to anyone that Maripaz used Alex to get what she wanted. If there is any surprise here (and I don't think it's really much of a surprise) it's that she was mean enough to say this directly to Alex.

As for the other issue: "Just close your eyes and think of Lucía." Later, he can say "It didn't mean anything." and "I was thinking of you the whole time!". How could she not forgive him?

Conversely, Gato, the scales are/should be balanced by Ivan presumably thinking Camilo is Lucia's baby daddy--however brief that is, considering there are only thirtysomething episodes left in this show.

Wow...so is the moral of this particular novela "Whenever someone has your best interests at heart, they're a blithering idiot--don't listen to them, ever"?

(Word verification: conme, or what half the main cast--literally--has done to all of us.)

I've slept on it (twice) and I'm still annoyed as hell. I just keep picturing Boozy Floozy a few episodes backing gloating. "¡Gané! ¡Gané!" Her punishment better be good. You know, with time I came to the point I could look back and pity Ivana-ho from STuD. I don't know that I will ever pity Boozy Floozy.

I feel like Yosemite Sam when he gets really mad. OOOOOOOO!!!!

Great recap. I agree with you guys that it was an awful capitulo. I thought Lucia should tell Ivan about her pregnancy. He has the right to know he's having a child, but right now I'm so mad at him that I'm all for not telling him. The only good thing about this is the fact that boozy
can't say he will not sleep with her in order to get a divorce. But she doesn't want a divorce so that's a mute point.
I can't stand the thought of Lucia and Camilo getting married. These people really have their priorities screwed up. Everyone has a child out of wedlock but yet they are all so worried about "appearances" .

Thank you for this recap. It must have been a painful one to do and you did a marvelous job.

I agree, I was one of the ones who uttered a cacophonous hiss when Ivan succumbed. Ivan, you dog. You idiot and dog. Ivan, the idiot man.

I actually am almost rooting for Camilo to get Lucia (even though I know it's doomed) because Ivan has been such an idiot that he doesn't deserve her. But I know it's doomed, and poor Camilo deserves better than that.

Still firmly on Team Antolin. Ah, Antolin, Antolin, you are my guilty pleasure . . .

The illegitimacy rate in Mexico was 38% in 2007; it could be higher now. Lucrazia has her head where the sun don't shine on this issue.

Children do need two parents, but not when they don't love each other. No matter how Camilo feels about Lucia she isn't in love with him and won't be.

Camilo has already betrayed Ivan, as did Antolin. Ivan needs better friends.

What is with the crows?

That crow made a dramatic appearance with Camilo the other night. This can't bode well. If he and Lucia get married, then the only way Ivan gets her back is sadly to have Camilo die since people tend not to get divorced in these things. Except Gerry and Lucrezia. Oh, and MP and David! Maybe there's some hope for Camilo after all! But probably not. Unless they work something out with Judith, he may be doomed.

And it can't be said enough. Ivan, you're a dumbass. Does LA not have a wall good enough for you? Maybe something on the beach? Covered in sand? And seagulls? Covers all your weird fetishes and is still better than sleeping with your wife. Blech.

Kelly,

That was priceless; totally cracked me up.

I'd rather see Camilo redeemed than dead, but life isn't always fair.

IMHO Camilo's sins, if you will, are little compared to the others in the scheme of things. I agree with Celia and Tony that Ivan lost his place in line for Lucia. Ivan doesn't plan to return for the next 8-10 yrs. depending on where he considers Alex fully grown and big enough to take care of himself when it comes to MP's nasty intrigues. Does Ivan really expect Lucia to wait around another decade to take up their love affair right where it left off? Get real!! Cam has been put in charge of Lucia's wellbeing. Now that Ivan's married he is incapable of making Lucia whole in society, and there's no better man to care for his child and to offer him unconditional love and a decent upbringing than his BFF, Cam. It's like Gerry ten yrs. earlier.

I feel that this TN is more geared toward the bad guy. I mean I've never seen the "good girl" get raped, usually someone protects her. I am not a Lucia fan, I think if it had been written that she told Ivan a long time ago where his son was all of this would not have happened. The writers are making everyone pay, except MP. I don't think Lucia's baby is Ivan's, and to be frank I don't think MP is going to allow herself to get pregnant again, what get fat and lose her body? Not in the cards for her.

I've never watched a novela where the man has suffered so much. But Friday's episode was ridiculous, Ivan goes to bed with MP because Lucia is not answering his phone calls - then I say Lucia good for you you made out better.

I really thought this was going to be the best TN out there, but the writers messed up so much.

Jardinera: OMG - I missed a few minutes of this and to my shock and horror, missed Ivan committing an almost unpardonable sin. Ack.

Perfect title and the recap was amazing. So many wonderful lines, "city of Lost (as in fallen) Angels" and "woe-man", but "tri-lingual hands", was my favorite.

I love Celia but all of her children are in for heartbreak. Carmen because she's selfish and cruel, Cam because of all the reasons you went into in the recap and Anto simply because we all fear he and Caro will be doomed in the end.

Mrs. Ivan's cruel answer to her son was unforgiveable. Ivan, how could you????? Blech.

Diana

Excellent recap Jardinera, thanks!

In this TN, despite his thug life Antolin has been the better male character -- he lies, cheats, and kills but he does it all without betraying his core convictions.

On the other hand, Ivan has been so inconcistent that I'm wondering if he ever had any deep set of beliefs. From the moment that he learned the true nature of Maripaz regarding him and Alex, Ivan always maintained that he regretted ever sleeping with her and that he has been too naive and had tried to keep his distance from her. I'm not mad that he sleept with Maripaz because at the end of the day she's his wife and his a man after all.

What frustrated me was the fact that not two episodes ago, Ivan himself was telling Maripaz they're only married in name only; where were his regrets before he went further? Couldn't he have stop it until it got to that point? -- Ivan has no convictions and that pains me about the character.

Unless....

It's a trick of the writers; they wanted to present it that way because A) so that they couldn't annul the marriage based on not doing the deed (an annulment will automatically revert the custody back to Maripaz)as opposed to a divorce will give Ivan the best chance in obtaining full custody of Alex; and

B) It's a fact that Camillo and Lucia will tie the knot very soon; I'm guessing that Lucia will also consumate her matrimony and the viewers will be better able to digest the fact that the heroine is sexing up another man other than her true love by hating on Ivan at this impasse of the TN.

Myo-

oops!

.... other than that I don't see why it was necessary for Ivan to give into Maripaz seductions so easily and later mops around in shock of what he's just done.

Myo-

Renata770: Welcome! As far as I know, it's not a fact yet that Lucia will marry Camilo. If it isn't something possibly hinted at in the "avances", I would ask you to self censor as we have a "spoiler free" zone here.

Your reasoning regarding the divorce and custody question makes quite a bit of sense!

Apologize Jarinera and all; I was just making speculation based on the "nueva etapa" nothing else. I apologize to anyone who has neither seen it nor didn't want to know about it. I'll keep my comments just on the past and current episodes from on.

Myo-
