Amor Bravío #5-6 (Uni 3) Wed 8/15/12

Capitulos 5 & 6 (Mexican Broadcast Sequence): Let Us Prey

Refrito

None, but the promos are giving away too much.

Lo de Nuevo

Hotel Boardwalk: Camila is questioning her decision to marry Alonso because of his insecurity, lack of self-control, jealousy, and violent streak. He tries to intimidate her but does not find this as easy as he hoped.  and finally sounds pathetic.  She realizes she didn't know him remotely as well as she thought she did. He grabs her and violently attempts to kiss her, but she pushes him away and decides to return home. She picks up her bag and exits, leaving him staring angrily after her. The music takes on a suspenseful tone.

Alonso's Office: Don Daniel sees that Alonso is a traitor. He prints some documents, writes a few things down, then has a chest pain. The Tell-Tale Heart is heard along with some horror-film music in a minor key. He calls for Natalia and tells her not to tell Alonso that he had been in the office.

Daniel & Miriam's Apartment: He still hasn't found work; the economy is bad. She tells him they can live on her inheritance at the moment, but he does not wish to do this.

Iglesia: Natalia tells Padre Baldomero – who is holding the large envelope – that Don Daniel had asked to be left alone in the office and when she returned he was very nervous. He is wondering what was this about and why Don Daniel needed to be in Alonso's office on a Sunday. As Natalia walks out of the church with the Padre behind her we hear The Tell-Tale Heart and the Padre sees Don Daniel about to collapse. He calls for help, shouting for someone to call for a doctor.

Hotel: Camila packs her suitcase, saying the first flight she could get will be first thing in the morning. Alonso is not fighting her on this; au contrario. He tells her that her mother has just called to tell them that Don Daniel is very ill and in the hospital. She begins to cry and he embraces her to pretend to comfort her [By the gods, Camila, why are you not cringing?].

Hospital Waiting Room: Augustina and Padre Baldomero wait. She is distraught, saying that something must have happened to cause this; he tells her they can only pray and trust in God. Isadora (Mama Dragon) arrives, right on schedule. She tells them Alonso called to tell her that he is moving heaven and earth to get them there to see Don Daniel.  She pretends concern for Don Daniel and embraces Augustina.

The next day:

Daniel & Miriam's Apartment: He has apparently gotten a job offer, or an interview with Licenciado Becerra.... in Mexico. As good as this sounds, Miriam had never considered the possibility of leaving Chile. She wanted their child to be born there in her country, she would miss her brother and her friends, and have to live in a foreign country. [Miriam, didn't Ruth once say “Whither thou goest, I shall go?”. This is hardly being encouraging.]

Hospital Waiting Room: Camila and Alonso arrive to find their mothers waiting for them. Augustina tells them that Don Daniel is in Intensive Care. Camila immediately marches up to the desk and demands to speak with the doctor in charge of her uncle's case. Alonso tries to get her to tone it down but she will not be dismissed in this manner. The nurse picks up the phone.

Hospital Room: It must be only a few minutes later, but Camila is clad in blue scrubs as she visits Don Daniel, who is asleep as the music becomes serious and the medical equipment maintains a steady rhythm of beeps. Camila keeps talking, as she had previously done with Luis, telling her uncle not to leave her, how much they need to do and how she loves him. She begins to cry and gently lays her head down on his lower chest. He wakes and gently strokes her head. She happily talks to him, but this is likely to be a repeat of what had happened with Luis.  He asks her to forgive him, then has difficulty saying more.

Hospital Waiting Room: Augustina sits on the couch looking pensive; Mama Dragon and her pup stand away from her as the music echoes their conspiratorial tone.

Isadora:   If the old man dies, it works in our favor.
Alonso:   Don't start singing victory yet, Mother.
Isadora:   Dear God, if it's now right now it will still be sooner than we thought. The death of Don Daniel will give us much. (pinching his chin) And all his wealth will pass into our hands.
Alonso (suspicious look):   Look, it will belong to Camila.
Isadora (smugly):   Ay, ay, dear God, so who will oversee it all? (dismissive hand gesture) Let her be happy with her little animals while you administer everything. And as a woman I tell you that the way to do have her eating out of your hand is to keep her happy and above all, satisfied. (grins as though she were Samantha on Sex & the City)
Alonso:   I don't believe it will be that easy. Camila is a difficult woman and it doesn't look like – (starts to bite a claw, but she slaps his hand)
Isadora:   Dear God, son, don't deceive me. In all ways you will have to control your wife. Because things will go better if Don Daniel dies without suspicion of what we're planning.

Hospital Room:  Don Daniel says Alonso's name twice, then the tone goes flat. Camila runs out into the corridor to yell for a doctor. The doctor and nurse come, but it is too late. Split-screen shot of the doctor covering Don Daniel as Camila collapses in tears in the corridor.

Cemetery:  Sad music is heard as we see the giant floral wreath and cross. Padre Baldomero says the prayer as Camila, her family (human and otherwise) and the ranch workers stand around in black. Camila cries as she kneels and places her bouquet of funeral lilies on the just-filled grave. Isadora Dragon rolls her eyes at the proceedings.

Bulls across the plain...

La Malquerida, Parlour: Augustina and Camila cry together; both are devastated. Augustina leaves the room; Alonso suggests that Camila rest for a while. He kneels in front of her and tells her that Don Daniel had charged him to take care of her [indeed, we really believe that.... not]. She says “Yes, he loved you very much. The last thing he said was your name.” That really gets his attention and he looks up. “You know, I had the feeling he was trying to tell me something.” She continues to cry. He kisses her hand and holds her knees on both sides. He asks her to forget the (non) honeymoon and not tell anyone, especially her mother. He doesn't want any more problems. She agrees, then excuses herself to go upstairs.  The music (which is a little too loud) alerts the uninitiated to be suspicious.

Santiago de Chile, Park: Miriam apologises to Daniel, who says he will look for work locally. She tells him she's sorry; if he finds work elsewhere, that's fine. They kiss over their love song.

Parlour: Dionisio (El Diablo) enters and finds Alonso alone. He says something about how tragic (not), finally admitting that this “unexpected” death will fit right in with their plans. He asks about Camila and Alonso replies that she had gone upstairs to rest. El Diablo is a little sad, saying “I was hoping to get better acquainted with your beautiful wife.” Alonso doesn't dare say so, but he is peeved at this while trying to work up some venom.

Santiago de Chile, Outdoor Café: It has been eight days since Licenciado Becerra's last communication and Daniel is worried. Dante tells him to keep looking because this sounds like it fell through.

A few days later...

La Malquerida: To the sounds of the title music, cattle roam over the hills. We see fighting bulls.

Parlour/Dining Room [Note: Mexican broadcast placed the episode division in this scene] : Augustina's plans appear to be changing in her mind, but Camila encourages her to go through with her previous one to return to Monterrey. Augustina says she will miss the place. Alonso opens the outside parlour door to admit Padre Baldomero and Licenciado Becerra, who have come for the reading of the will. They read the will; Don Daniel was a very generous man, leaving a pension for Padre Baldomero and a monthly allowance for Augustina. He has left Camila his townhouse a generous monthly allowance, and everything that had belonged to his deceased wife, Amparo. Camila is to be the executrix of his remaining assets. The hacienda and the ranch has been left to Daniel Diaz Acosta, his principle heir. This sets off Alonso, who rises from the table shouting “This cannot be!”

Alonso (rising):   No, no, this cannot be!
Camila (still crying):  Calm down, Alonso.
Alonso:   Your uncle can't do this. He can't leave all this to a stranger. Who is this jerk? Who is this Daniel Diaz Acosta? Who is he?
Augustina:   I think I know who he is. (the Padre looks up)
Alonso:   Who? Who, Señora? Who is this Daniel Diaz Acosta for whom he disinherits Camila? Who is he?
Camila:   Sit down calmly, Alonso. (He actually obeys her)
Augustina:   Osvaldo, this young man, this so-and-so Daniel, is the son of Ágatha Acosta of Chile.
Becerra:   I don't know, Augustina. For the moment I don't have this information.
Augustina: Padre Baldomero, therefore you should know this. This young man is the son of that woman.
Padre Baldomero: Yes, Augustina.
Camila:   But who is this woman?
Augustina:  The lover your uncle took up with more than thirty years ago when your uncle was married to my cousin, Amparo.
Alonso:   Therefore, this Daniel is the son of –
Augustina (impatient and angry):   Yes, yes; he is nothing more than Daniel's bastard son. A child of sin born in Chile after he committed adultery against my poor cousin Amparo.
Padre Baldomero:   Please, Augustina, don't go on about things you don't know about.
Augustina (sarcastic):   And if he isn't the bastard son why would Daniel leave him this inheritance?
Padre Baldomero:     I don't know. And Daniel was within his rights to leave his property to whomever he wanted.
Augustina:  What disillusion. I was right; he never stopped thinking of this woman.
Camila:  Mother, you calm down. Padre Baldomero is right. The fact is he had the right to leave the inheritance to anyone he wanted to.
Alonso:   It's unfair. (pounds the table) It's unfair. Nobody can't take it all.

All look at Alonso as though he had gone mad.

Daniel & Miriam's Apartment:  She is talking on the phone to Dante about medical insurance for Daniel and for their baby; the messenger had just delivered the paperwork. She wishes him a good trip, then puts the papers away. The doorbell rings and she admits her brother. While he says he just dropped in to visit her and to see that she and his future nephew are well, as soon as Daniel enters from another room it is obvious he is there to check up on him and his intention to find work. It is obvious that he suspects Daniel of having married Miriam for her money; to become a kept man. Further, he suspects that the trip to Mexico was for another purpose and that Daniel is a kept man. Daniel is clearly peeved at this accusation as he exits. Miriam is also peeved with her brother.

Dining Room: Suspenseful music underscores very quietly in the background, building up until the end.

Camila:   I'm glad he left the administration of the ranch to me, but what bothers me the most is that my uncle had a child with another man and nobody told me.
Padre Baldomero:   It's that nobody was certain that this young man is the son of Daniel.
Augustina:    Please, Padre, it's as clear as water.
Alonso:    Whether he is or not is the least of it. He has no right to take it all. What about all your work on the ranch and the love you gave your uncle? It rightfully belongs to you, Camila. We've got to do something to put this right.
Augustina:    Alonso is right.
Camila:    We will not. I will respect my uncle's decision.
Alonso:    But why not? It's a big deal, Camila. (to Becerra) Excuse me. (to Camila) The ranch and everything else of your uncle's is rightfully yours.
Augustina:    Yes, Camila, Alonso is right. The young man who never lived with your uncle can't inherit more than you.  You were his adored little girl. His niña consentida.
Camila:    But this is my uncle's decision and I will complete his wishes, however it must.
Alonso:    Your uncle must have been mad to make this decision.
Camila:    Enough! I will do as I said. It was his last wish and we will complete it. My uncle trusted me to complete my duties as executrix.
Becerra:    Here it is, Camila. I'm sorry, Señor Lazcano.
Camila:    Osvaldo, let's get on with it. How do we do it? When do we notify Señor...
Becerra:    Daniel Diaz Acosta.
Camila:    About the inheritance.
Becerra:    Immediately. He lives in Chile. He has a limited time period of a year to claim his inheritance. [plazo]
Alonso: Why the deadline?
Becerra: Because if a year passes and he doesn't claim it and the name of Daniel Monterde, if he renounces it, or if there is a reason he can't do it, all – inluding Rancho La Malquerida – will pass into Camila's hands.
Camila:    Nobody will pass up an inheritance this large. We just need to notify him, wait for him to get here, meet him, and help him assume possession.
Augustina:    Not a word of this to anyone, please. Nobody must know why my brother-in-law didn't leave the ranch to my daughter. But this bastard –
Camila:    Sooner or later someone will know.

Santiago de Chile, Park: Miriam asks Daniel why he takes Abraham's words so seriously. Daniel says he thinks this way of everyone. [Note to Daniel: He's a cop; it's his default position after too many years at the 27.] So now it's back to Square One for Daniel's job search so he can be the provider he wants to be.

3-Quarter Moon and the next day.

Lazcano Lair: Mama Dragon has just received her pup's bad news in her sumptuous parlour. Note his submissive body language in her presence.

Isadora:     It's not an act of madness of old Monterde. No, no; there is something else here.
Alonso:      What else?
Isadora (slightly annoyed):    For him to leave everything he had to a bastard son nobody knew about is not logical. (slaps his had as he's about to bite his thumb claw) Listen up!
Alonso:     What are you saying?
Isadora:     I am trying to say that nobody is sure that he is his son. When will Daniel make out his will?
Alonso:     I don't know. I don't know, Mother. Why do you ask?
Isadora:     Because I'm sure that the old man found out about someone or something that influenced him to change his will.
Alonso (getting up and stepping away, taking his drink):    It seems impossible that Don Daniel would know our plans.
Isadora:     Impossible? No, Alonso! You said that Camila told you that the last name he mentioned before he died was yours. What was his intention? Was he trying to warn her about you or flatter you to your [stupid] little wife? [halagar]
Alonso:  I will have to find out [???]  (Music takes on a horror-film undertone)
Isadora (standing):     Me, too. But we won't trust anyone. (handles his lapels) You will ask Camila exactly what he said before he died. Then we will deal with the issue of the will. It is important that we know the entire law on this.
Alonso:     Very well.
Isadora:     We need to know all the details about how he came to this division.

If Alonso doesn't realize that komodo dragons are capable of eating their own young he should do his homework on that as well.

Hacienda La Malquerida:  Camila and Augustina walk into the kitchen, talking about Daniel. Augustina knows that Daniel has the name of his mother's husband but says that Don Daniel learned of young Daniel's existence only recently. He had requested that Padre Baldomero investigate Agatha's life after she left Mexico and the information must have arrived during Camila's honeymoon. When Padre Baldomero discovered Don Daniel having a heart attack, he called Becerra. Camila speculates on whether this news caused the heart attack, but Augustina hopes not. Had this not happened, everything would belong to Camila. Camila tells her that material goods do not matter to her; she only hopes that young Daniel will honor her uncle and carry on as he did. She isn't sure at the moment what that will mean in terms of the future. She does not have the money to purchase the ranch from its new owner. Losing it as well as her uncle at the same time will make her very sad.

Amanda's Kitchen: Amanda and Natalia talk about the day Don Daniel was in Alonso's office. Amanda tells her that Don Daniel was sure she would lose her job if Alonso found out she had let him into his office to go through his things. [We are sure she would lose far more than that.] For this reason she tells her to say nothing to anyone.

Daniel & Miriam's Apartment:  Daniel receives a long-distance call from Becerra's office in Mexico to inform him of his inheritance.

Iglesia:   Augustina questions Padre Baldomero, who tells her of Agatha's death, but that there had been no communication between her and Daniel since her departure.  Though she presses him about his knowledge of Don Daniel's life – as they had been friends since boyhood – he will tell her nothing more.

Daniel & Miriam's Apartment:   Daniel finishes the call and brings Miriam up to date on it. He has a year to claim the inheritance or it will belong to the niece. He has no idea why it is being left to him, but knows that his mother lived near this property when she lived in Mexico. Miriam becomes excited and tells him they had better do this quickly, for the sake of their baby.

[Deleted shot in favor of buffer: More grazing bulls in view.]

Cemetery:   Camila stands at Don Daniel's grave with Maja at her side, asking why he never told her about his son. She's sad rather than angry, wishing to have known Agatha and possibly her son. Maybe that's what he was trying to talk about in the hospital. She finally leaves the flowers and they walk away. Her cell phone rings and it's Ximena, lounging in bed as usual, with a cocktail.

Ximena:     I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am.
Camila:     Thanks, but don't say things you don't feel.
Ximena:     Why do you say that?
Camila:     Because I know you. And I'm sure you called me instead of Mother to ask if I can get her to revoke your punishment for not coming to my wedding. Am I right?
Ximena:     No, of course not, Camila. You're imagining that.
Camila:     No, I'm not. I know you, but anyway, I can't imagine you feeling so bad you didn't come to my wedding.
Ximena:     No, no, of course not. What happened is –
Camila:     Ya, this is neither the time nor the place to talk about this. I'll tell Mother you called. (pushes the end-call button, and continues walking)
Ximena (getting the dial tone and slamming the receiver down in frustration):    Ay, Camila!
Camila (bumping into Viviana):     I'm sorry, I'm sorry. (picks up her dropped phone) I was distracted.
Viviana:    Don't worry. Your dog is beautiful.
Camila:    She's my little girl. Her name is Maja.

Lazcano Lair: The dragons plot with the devil as the violins do their macabre dance.

Alonso (pacing):    I'll have to ask my notary to find out when Don Daniel changed his will.
Dionisio (standing still, arms crossed. We are surprised he has a reflection in the mirror behind him):    Yes, yes. It's very strange that this happened just now.
Isadora (seated on sofa near Dionisio):    And it's a crime that he apologised to Camila before he died. That he did it to protect her and she should trust nobody and that he felt guilty he did it.
Dionisio:    He did what?
Alonso:    We don't know. He said my name, then he died.
Dionisio:    I have the impression he changed his will precisely to protect Camila from you. (Alonso starts biting his claws again)
Isadora:     I think the same thing. But that would mean that someone told him our plans on the wedding day or the day he died.
Alonso:     But how did he discover it? How? Nobody could have told him. I left no compromising information at the ranch.
Dionisio:     Someone must have told him something. That's the only logical explanation.
Alonso:     Well, so we will need to find out, along with who told him he had a bastard son, which is why he changed the will. He wouldn't have without that discovery.
Dionisio:    Could be. We can no longer regret taking precautions.
Isadora:    Good. What are we going to do?
Alonso (nervously scratching his head):    For the moment, wait until this jerk gets here. We need to know his attitude, don't we? We could negotiate with him, I don't know. I've got a headache, excuse me.
Isadora:   Go lie down on my bed. (he exits)

Daniel & Miriam's Apartment:   Daniel locates a photo of Don Daniel on the internet and shows it to Miriam. In the photo Don Daniel wears a black traje de charro with white or silver decoration and carries a matching sombrero.  The article indicates he breeds fighting bulls.    Miriam recognizes him from the old photos despite the passage of time. She speculates that Don Daniel was a great friend of Agatha, but Daniel questions why he would leave more to him than to his own niece. And why his mother never spoke of him. The photos were also in a locked box. Miriam starts wondering about the photographer they confronted, who had a Mexican accent. Should they tell Abraham? Such an intelligent reaction except for the one obvious question: Why did Agatha name her son Daniel? Daniel tells her not to tell Abraham about the photographer or the inheritance for now. He wants to wait until they have been to Mexico and found out what they need to know.

Lazcano Lair:  When the pup is away the grown demons will prey.

Dionisio:    We can't listen to your son.
Isadora:    Of course not. I can't wait until this guy gets here; someone could be spying on us.
Dionisio:    Me neither.
Isadora:    What do you propose? (They exchange sly expressions)

Padre Baldomero's Study:   He takes a white envelope from the large one and places it near the candlestick, then takes out the cell phone photo of Daniel.

Padre:   You are Daniel, son of Agatha. Paternity in doubt. He looks like a good fellow; looks like his mother. (takes a deep breath) But I see nothing of Daniel in you. (in frustration) I don't understand how without certainty you can think this young man is yours. Why did you change your, will, Daniel? What horrible thing did you find out that provoked your heart attack? (to the picture of Christ) Ay, Señor!

Lazcano Lair: The trap is set by the Master.

Isadora (almost flirtatious):    Are you sure that this will suit us?
Dionisio:    Completely. Only they can or would be interested. [interarse] We need to protect our plans.he
Isadora (acutally flirtatious): Very well; we won't say anything. (touching his lips) In this case I will leave you in charge of all.
Dionisio:    That is as it will be. (chuckles evilly and kisses her hand) I will take charge of eliminating this problem. Be sure that we will no longer have a problem of the bastard, Daniel Diaz Acosta.

Avances

The Devil tells Mama Dragon that Daniel will not arrive to claim his inheritance; we see a gunman.

Vocabulary

halagar......     to flatter
interarse.....   to take interest
plazo........ ..    period of time; deadline
toros de lidia........ .. fighting bulls

Komodo Dragons are probably the nastiest reptiles on earth.

The Devil goes by many names in culture and religion and is a popular opera villain. César Évora's Dionisio (a name that suggests extreme self-indulgence) is so like Mephistopheles in Charles Gounod's Faust that I thought you'd all enjoy this clip from the Met's current production. René Pape is the charismatic devil in a white suit; if César sang, could you not picture him in this scene (enlarge to full screen for subtitles)?:

Bloody hell! It irritates me that this site screws with my fonts.

Another great recap, UA. Muchas gracias. Y también por el vocabulario. Y, por supuesto, por la aria de Faust.

I am still not really into this TN. The relationship between Camila and Alonso seems so absurd. I have a large collection of beanies, but none of them is up to the task of making this relationship believable.

It's interesting. I've seen a number of the cast members in other telenovelas, and on the whole, they looked a lot better a few years ago. I'm thinking especially of Cesar Evora, who has put on too much weight, but even Silvia Navarro looks somehow washed out, though I suppose that the role calls for that right now. And I caught a glimpse of Rene Strickler in one of the promos, and I almost didn't recognize him. However, Leticia Calderon looks better than ever. BTW, I loved your comment about her as Mama Dragon and that Alonso had better realize that komodo dragons are capable of eating their own young.

One good thing about this TN: the plot is really moving along. No drawn-out illness for Don Daniel, and a would-be assassin is waiting in the wings for Lil Daniel.

Oh, one more thing--who is Viviana (the woman Camila bumps into near the end of tonight's episode)?

Thanks UA - your recap truly captures the pure evil of that pair of demons with humor and wit. Loved your references to Komodo Dragons and especially how Alonso 'starts to bite a claw, but she slaps his hand.'

Cesar Evora and Leticia Calderon are perfect in their roles. And to me CE's extra weight adds to his screen presence and makes him even more intimidating and dangerous.

There is a very disturbing, unsettling undertone to this TN, and the weird music seems to contradict the serious, even tragic events. Or maybe I'm watching this TN too late at night.

I've had a new thought about the relationship between Daniel (CdlF) and Camila: maybe Camila's father and Don Daniel were not blood relatives, perhaps one was adopted.

Also, you noted the Quarter Moon. Do you know if this TN is tracking time by the phases of the moon (as in LQNPA)? Since Daniel has a year to claim his inheritance, this may be a way of knowing how far along we are in the story.
Anya

Miriam wants to hold on to HER inheritance and stay in Chile, but quick to say Daniel can dispose of HIS inheritance in Mexico so they can stay in Chile. Mir, sit down.

Juanita, I've been watching novelas since 1993 and have noticed that Cesar Evora seems to put on extra weight when he's playing "the heavy." That's also when he typically has facial hair. When he's playing the hero or a loving father, he gets down to his best weight and he shaves. Check the last wedding thread for his photo from La Madrastra for comparison.

His present look does suit this character, though.

Viviana will become Camila's friend, according to Wikipedia.

Anon, I am not sure that the moon phases were tracking actual time in LQNPA; we rarely saw less than a full moon there. I'm hoping that the correct moon phases are shown for this purpose in this one, which is why I note them and will encourage others to do so.

As to how we find out that Camila and Daniel are not related, I'm currently agreeing with the Padre; he's the child of a reconciliation and was named Daniel because his mother loved Don Daniel. I ended up with a middle name that was the name of my father's last girlfriend before he met my mother, a fact she didn't know until I was three years old. That did not go down well.

Anon207, I am trying to figure out why Miriam would have inherited all or mostly everything of her parents'; perhaps they didn't approve of Abraham becoming a cop? Her inheritance could have included the apartment but I think it is mostly liquid assets. Her desire to stay in Chile is likely fueled by her pregnancy and need to be near the familiar. Which would include her brother (her only relative) and her friends.

What a great recap UA. Haven't caught the episode yet, after thje soccer game I just wiped out and went to sleep. Going to catch the doings over lunch on Hulu, but with our great dialogue, I feel like I got what I needed.

Things sure are progressing, which is ok with me. My only problem with this TN is going to be Alonso...just horrid casting. It is so unbelievable that Cam would have even fallen for this guy and he's such a whiny wuss. At least they could have found an actor that had a more suave, dastardly way about him.

I also agree with the Padre and your thinking UA, Daniel isn't related to Don A, but knowing Alonso was the snake he looked like, he might know Danial to be a good egg and left things to him. (Another secret to unbury).

Still hanging in with this one though it's tough to follow being on later. As long as this doesn't become the Alonso show I'll be all right I think.

What became insanely obvious to me last night was how Mama Dragon and her pup have no boundaries. You'll see this in her facial expressions and his body language. No matter how well I can translate the dialogue (and I know I screw up from time to time) or describe the scene composition, I can't describe that as well as you can see it.

As to the casting of this actor, I think they were looking for someone who would look easily dominated by women, particularly an unscrupulous mother. He is also the skinniest actor I've ever seen in any of Televisa's productions.

UA, I'm not the least bit suprised this was an amazing, detailed, information laden recap, written beautifully (as always). The conversation translations and vocabulary were stellar.

My lack of language skills makes it hard for me to follow who the characters are in a new story. But, you crystallilzed everything perfectly. "[By the gods, Camila, why are you not cringing?]" had me nodding in vigorous agreement.

ITA with Anon in that "There is a very disturbing, unsettling undertone to this TN". I'm not really feeling SN (perhaps it's the fact her character married Alonso, who is without any sort of emotional or pysical appeal whatsoever...truly a "whiny wuss" as daisy noted. But, I love Cesar and Leticia - what an inspired, perfect pairing.

We have been shown what's "waiting in the wings for Lil Daniel" as Juanita noted. Not looking forward to that gruesome event.

Thanks again UA!

Diana

Thank you, UA. An excellent recap that captures the eeriness of the atmosphere and evil of three of our characters.

From yesterday, I agree with those who praised the Miriam/Daniel pairing. They are a sweet and loving couple, tossed around by conditions (good and bad) beyond their control.

The actor who plays Alonso was in Alma de hiero and Para volver a amar, looking skinny and very scruffy, in both cases a real working-class, working character. He had the perfect look for the role. He was paired with Angela Boyer in Alma de hiero! It's strange to see him cleaned up, though not an attractive match for Camila. On the other hand, she's been in a remote location, few options, and hurt by prior love and luck. What bad, bad husband material he has turned out to be!

Glad to see Maja helping Camila make friends with Daniela from Destilando. So funny to me how we associate actors with a particular role.

I have really enjoyed the first two episodes, but I have a preference for more subtle villains. These two, so masterfully played by Leticia and Cesar, are already out there, plotting murders, etc. What havoc they will wreak by the end. Noooo ambiguity there.

Thank you as always, UA. (It's far too early for a bad Dragon's Lair joke.)

The reading of Don Daniel's will surprised me in one big way--Li'l Daniel, as the protagonist, deliberately isn't being positioned as someone other characters will like. In-show, he's the bastard son who either (a) is taking what is rightfully Camila's inheritance; (b) is the unexpected wrench in the Axis of Evil's plans for stealing Don Daniel's estate; and, if my promo-fu is right (which is both a knock on Uni for giving away far too much and the continuing recognition of the anvil hanging over Miriam's head), he just might be (c) framed for the inevitable death of his wife. What is this, La fuerza del destino? (Considering Olivia Bucio's resemblance to Lucero Lander, except that Augustina seems a bit closer to a sane, or perhaps simply saner, version of Lucrecia Curiel...)

That said, like Juanita I'm not quite on board with this one yet--though it's still early enough that I'm keeping an open mind. Part of it is my very limited exposure beforehand to Cristian de la Fuente and Silvia Navarro; they're doing fine, but not grabbing me. It's fairly low-key, which works in its favor--and damn if Flavio Medina's borderline uncanny channeling of Ariel Lopez Padilla (circa Pecados ajenos, I'm thinking, just without the alcoholism) isn't nearly as distracting as Miriam's anvil.

1. Large CGI block letters are used to identify a location;
2. a montage of running bulls appears onscreen (excepting the opening credits);
3. Alonso bites one of his claws (fingernails).

Bill, also:

4. When someone says "bastardo."

Don't you just love prejudice about something beyond the target's control?

There's an interesting irony in all this. Alonso wears business suits and bites his nails, whereas Rogelio in LQNPA wore black shirts, charro shirts, and had manicured nails. Yes, I noticed that.

Dang fine recap.

Camila would you please shut up so Tio Daniel can do some splanin'. Somebody needs to come up with an App that quickly allows the Jordan crosser to select his/her final message. Maybe TC for telenovela confesions or TS for telenovela shortner.

Funny how all the characters seem to know the last words of Tio Daniel but all I could understand was duh duh duh and Camila relentless yacking. How that translated to A lon So is beyond me.

Don't know how the writers are going to keep up this pace.

UA, you may be right that in choosing the actor to play Alonso, they were "looking forsomeone who would look easily dominated by women, particularly an unscrupulous mother," but I think they made a terrible mistake. Many moderately guapo actors with talent could create the impression of someone easily dominated by women, and any of those actors would be more believeable as an esposo for Camila than the smarmy guy who was chosen to play Alonso. The fact that Camila chose to marry him is one reason I find it hard to relate to or even care about Camila, even though I loved Silvia Navarro in MEPS. I'm hoping/expecting that I'll feel more enthusiasm for her character once she and Daniel begin to interact.

It sounded to me like Don Daniel at least got to the second syllable in Alonso twice before he flatlined, but hey. That said, even I was kind of wanting Camila to shut up--it wasn't a total dramatic effect flub, just a near-miss.

UA: okay, yeah, I'll allow "bastardo." Between that and the bulls people will be blitzed before they're two-thirds through an episode.

"There's an interesting irony in all this. Alonso wears business suits and bites his nails, whereas Rogelio in LQNPA wore black shirts, charro shirts, and had manicured nails. Yes, I noticed that."
True, but to be fair Rogelio Montero was far more together than Alonso Lazcano is. You can't wield a riding crop if your nails are messed up. :) We can probably blame a huge chunk of this on mama Isadora, though...

No doubt! Isadora Dragon is definitely responsible for how her pup turned out.

I wonder whether she killed her husband for his money back in the day. We'll see if Alonso ever mentions him. If he doesn't that will be a huge clue.

As for his lack of proper male beauty, I recall my own mother trying to convince me that men's looks are of no importance and that their value is in their bank accounts. The mothers of my friends would speak of "character." Most of us were taught that we should not look for handsome men. Maybe Augustina tried that one on Camila.

Heh...there's character, and then there's "character." We all know which one Alonso has in abundance. :)

And Isadora turning out to have killed her husband (which no doubt Alonso won't know until much later) wouldn't be that big a deal, at least for me. It worked in Eva Luna, after all. And similarly to how I can't stop seeing Flavio Medina channeling Ariel Lopez Padilla I can't help waiting for Leticia Calderon to go all Mujeres Asesinas on suckers. Which probably means I need to watch more novelas, or at least different ones. :D

Thank you UA for another outstanding recap. I like this TN and I plan on staying.

I also like the choice of who is playing Alonso. (Doesn't he look like Mr. Bean?) He is so smarmy that it makes us despise him, which we are supposed to. Camila may have married him because she thought that she would never love someone again like she loved what's his name(don't even remember) and thought that at least Alonso cares about her and she was lonely.

I think that with the padre looking at the pictures and thinking that Daniel isn't Daniel Senior's son that it will end up being the case.
Camila and Daniel couldn't end up together otherwise.

Dragon and El Diablo are a diabolical cocktail of greed and opportunism.
AlonsNo is definitely a "whipped", weak man. I can't call him a puppy, it would be a slam to all puppies in viewerville.
After this latest episode, I see some underlying strength and stones in Camila's character. Her initial joy with Luis, cut short by the accident, left her grieving and feeling responsible for his death. Three years later, she is still wounded and the Dragon has capitalized on this wounded weakness. AlonsNo is totally doing her bidding and it is very clear from the confab of Dragon/Diablo he is dispensable and could even be seen as "culpable" if their plans fail. No spoiler, just an opinion. As previously stated: Komodo Dragons have been known to eat their young.
During the reading of the testamento, he was so transparent. Mommie will have to keep him in check.
Supporting characters Natalia, Vivian, etc. look to me like a support team for Camila.
As for Miriam, given what we already know, I suspect the anvil waits for thee.

Baby komodo dragons are called pups.

They're sort of cute when they hatch, but think of what they can grow into if not eaten by adult ones.

UA-wonderful recap as always. This TN is very dark, but interesting. I like Camila and her being down to earth. Dragon/Diablo/Alonso are so dark and really will have their evil work cut out for them.

I like what Don Daniel did for Camila. He left that ranch to his "bastardo", hate that word, but he protected her from Alonso, without her knowing, although the evil triumverant has already figured that out. Alonso so gave himself away with his outburst. I hope Daniel, if he makes it to Mexico, will figure out what is up with them.

I had to laugh at Ximena last night. Now that her Mom, Augusta is on an allowance, I wonder if she will continue to support Ximena? I think she called Camila cause she thought she inherited all kinds of money and was going to hit her up for some. Does Ximena even work?

Viviana was very nice (I too remember her from Destilando Amor as Daniela).

UA
Poetic irony.
I had no idea baby Komodos were pups.
Thank you for the great recap.

UA - fine recap. The Komodo dragon imagery is perfect. Thanks for all the dialogue. Always love your account of the music.

In the hospital scene, Augustina's hair looked like it was going to fly away. Totally realistic that in her misery over Don Daniel’s illness that she would be disheveled. She's got her faults, but I do think she wants what's best for Camila. After having a second husband who ran through her dough though, she's too focused on money.

Alonso must've oozed charm at some point (off screen) to get Camila to marry him even though she knew she didn't love him, but now she knows he's not only psycho but also just not a nice person. She doesn't even want to share a meal with him much less sleep with him. Wondering how Alonso will get her to put up with him.

On Cesar’s weight, the actor was so funny in an interview with Don Francisco after TdA. Cesar said the producers wanted a "galán" but got a "gallon." I like the suave evil that he's bringing to this.

UA: Great recap with lots of funny, snarky comments.

I watched this ep and the Tues' last night. I haven't read the recap/comments for Tues ep, so forgive me if anything I comment on here has already been discussed.

I find Sylvia's character very blah. I liked her so much better in MEPS and CME.

I also find it hard to believe that Camila would find Alonso attractive, but I think the actor is doing a great job of being creepy, smarmy.

I have a hard time believing the actor playing Isadora is Alonso's mother--she looks too young.

I got the impression that Cam is not related to Daniel by blood, since her uncle married into the family.

If Ximena turns out to be more villainous than she is now, I think she might be the first TN villainess that I like. Now she's just a brat--usually they turn me off too but for some reason I enjoy watching her.

Alonso reminds me of Tony Randall and Isadora reminds me of a Mitzi Gaynor and Shirley Jones--depending on what facial feature I concentrate on. Very pretty woman.

Robey

Oh, and by-the-way. Did the surgeon actually SHRUG at the nurse when Tio flatlined?

Also, even at the wedding, Cam looked like she thought she was making a mistake

UA...Your wonderful recap is the only reason I read on to check in on this novela. It's really tough to watch. The Alonzo character has absolutely nothing redeeming about him. I am having a hard time figuring out how he was cast for this role. I second Juanita's comment indicating it's almost unfathomable to believe that Camilla would have had the least interest in this icky thing at any time under any circumstances. I'm thinking the Univision casting people made a major mistake in assigning this role to this fellow. Also I prefer my Cesar Evora loveable and hugable, which looks most unpromising in this novela. Same for my Leticia Calderon, although I've appreciated her villainous characters on occasion. It's all front-loaded with bad guys. The sweet lovebirds are about the only thing to hang your hat on at this juncture and she's not always that loving. From reading this, it must be that the Camilla actress is famous but I've never seen her before, or don't recall her if I did. I'll try one or two more episodes but if some redeeming something doesn't present itself, I'll be only tuning into Eva for a while.

On one final note....UA did I see somewhere that you make Rosarys? I'm very much interested.

Thank you UA for so much translation and added info on the dragon reference. Loved the aria too.

Count me in with Cathyx, Daniel 'namesake' is not Camilla's cousin but a gesture of affection along the lines of 'love never dies'. I like the Director's courage in selecting this actor of diminished appearance to portray a repulsive character.

I am SO RELIEVed that Camilla is being portrayed as having a 'backbone' and a brain in her head! Thank goodness! It's hard for me to wish a heroine luck in love when I'm wishing she'd become a woman first.

Dona Felipa, try to catch some youtube episodes of Navarro in Montecristo. I think a lot of her work was with a previous network. I feel she's an amazing actress.

I sawdat too Robey! Making the most of his 'walk-on' maybe? lol

After reading Tues eps recap/comments, I see there is a blood relationship between Tio and Cam. Also, see I'm not the only one commenting on the Alonso/Tony Randall connection.

Robey

Thanks for the detailed recap.

One other character I am not liking is Miriam. She seems a spoilt thing to me. I suspect that the plan about to be hatched at Daniel by the gruesome twosome and their slimy leech sidekick will backfire onto Miriam.

Cindy

UA thanks for another recap and the info about Komodo dragon. Though I must say, I think they are cuter than AlonsNO.

I do like this TN but I need to get to bed early.

Yes, Aloneso definitely reminds me of a smarmy, nasty version of Tony Randall, who I still enjoy watching in those Doris Day/Rock Hudson movies. As for advice from mothers on choosing a hubby...if you get lucky you can find a good guy who is also guaypo. If you can't find one of those...always choose the good guy over the goodlooker. Aloneso has struck out in both those departments...he's not a goodlooker or a good guy. Time to bunt. I agree that Camila just caved in to her mother's constant pushing to marry A. Gee, my girls never listened to me about their choices of mates.

Yes, Miriam would want to stay in Chile near her family & friends due to the pregnancy, but she would want to stay in Chile without or without a baby on the way. Remember, it was Daniel that had to convert for her, not the other way around. I think they are a cute couple, but I also think Miriam wants things her way.

Madelaine, this is a dark tale and I think Univision will save this time slot for the darker stories. It's rated TV-14 and I think that's a good thing.

Niecie, I thought I read somewhere that Mejia originally wanted Cesar to be Victoria Ruffo's husband in TdA; it's like there's a law at Televisa that when the two of them are in a novela together they have to be married to each other. What's interesting is that Osvaldo Rios was her great love in Abrazame Muy Fuerte while Cesar was the villainous husband.

Robey, I don't know how old Flavio Medina is and Leticia Calderon may be too young to actually be his mother. That's very common, though. In the aforementioned novela Cesar Evora's villain was the biological father of two young men played by actors who were only 15 and 8 years younger than he.

Bonney churros, I agree with you on what is the probable (non) relationship. I think that Agatha wanted Don Daniel to be her son's father.

The opera clip was one of my favourite moments of that production. If your local PBS station ever shows it again, watch. The tenor is gorgeous as well as talented.

Cindy, I think Miriam is probably feeling a little afraid at the prospect of leaving what she knows and the pregnancy intensifies that.

Dona Felipa, the photos of some of my rosaries are here. Photos 26-31. They're not yet on my website but I will charge $100 for each; they are strung and knotted by hand on silk cord. There is also a purple jade one that I haven't photographed yet.

Karen, et al: Glad everyone agrees on the komodo dragon comparison.

Can't watch this UA. Lots of reasons, but just can't. However thanks for another carefully crafted recap. So much to admire. Truly a work of art.

Too busy to comment today Urban. Thank you for yet another fabulous recap!

No prob, guys.

I don't have a weekend discussion thread ready for tomorrow because I will be away overnight on Saturday; I will need to work on Monday's episode tomorrow. I now realize that I shouldn't have posted one last week with a Friday finale.

Weekend after next we will have a discussion about the novela characters and situations we would create based on the cliches we want to kill or change. Think about these till then.

UA: your rosaries are very beautiful.

I know that there are some character actors from classic films, for example, who always played the mother/father, etc. when they actually weren't that much older--or even younger than their offspring. etc. The prob I have with Isa/Al is that she too young. I could buy it if she didn't look so young.

Robey

I agree that she is too young. She also said in the first episode that people say the same thing which means that she had Alonso when she was quite young...

Ibarramedia

I'm interested in how Isadora met Dionisio; how they became scam artists; and how long they've been doing it. Was her late husband one of their victims?

I've been thinking about that. It sounds very likely.

UA: Late to this party, but a really enjoyable read!

Well, "The Tell-Tale Heart is heard along with some horror-film music in a minor key"--excellent pickup! I didn't catch that!

Thought the same thing:

"Camila, why are you not cringing?"
Liked these:
Camila, her family (human and otherwise)
Alonso starts biting his claws
Mama Dragon
Thanks!!

If all goes well, caption pages will start tonight (thursday) here. I'm not watching this one right now, having switched to Abismo, but I hope these are useful to a few others. I wish the quality of the english captions was better; I guess the former, talented transcriber got fed up and quit.

Haven't posted in a while, these new captchas are brutal...

Gracias, Gato Viejo!

Muchas gracias, Gato Viejo. These were immensely helpful in La Que No Podía Amar, and I'm delighted that you'll be providing them again for Amor Bravío.
