Amores Verdaderos #89 Mon 3/18/13 A Confession (Kind of)
* Lo refrito: Victoria, the jealous Balvanera princess gets owned by Arriaga. “Yes, madam, you’re right, Opalina isn’t just my spiritual guide. Good night.” Vicky is impactada, and she deserved it.
* Lo nuevo: while Nikki is anxiously waiting for her BoyToyBoyfriend, the aforementioned young gentleman is in the middle of a threesome with two American girls (who surely won the award for the most horrible accent in a telenovela). He says he’s with his coach, and they are making arrengements to his next United States tournament. By the way, he hopes this time his beloved flaquita (skinny girl) will accompany him… as his wife. Neta gets a small heart attack, but manages to feign enthusiasm: oh, that’s great, she wants to marry him so much, and now she’s super happy. Really. Roy promises that as soon as he finishes there *yuck*, he’ll pick her up.
* Beatriz and her beaten-up knight in the shining armor are having dinner at a restaurant. He confesses in a very touching and lovely manner that although he had never had a father figure in his life, and he has zero experience with children, he wants to learn about these things, and he’s looking forward to form a family with her and Guillo.
* Paula and Felipe are also having a nice and cheerful evening together: they are talking about the good old times, and Felipe assures his ex wife that he’d love to be her friend.
* Nikki Equis, who’s still waiting for Roy, is getting more and more annoyed every minute. So this is the perfect moment for Guzmán to enter the room, and as always, Nikki unleashes all her bitchiness at him: what are you doing here, gorilla? Why can’t you leave me alone? They start arguing about Roy: while Frankie is making fun of the boytoy, Nikki demands that he show respect to her boyfriend, her fiancé, her future husband. Oh, by the way, we’re going on a tour to the US soon! Guzmi starts clenching his jaw, and his situation gets even worse when Tomasina shows up and tells him that Aníbal wants to see him at the hospital. He’s probably bored and wants to talk to someone. Nikki finds the situation very amusing: oh, that sounds a great plan for tonight, have fun, gorilla! Guzmán switches into the mega-jaw-clenching mode.
* In the hospital Adriana is walking around with a HUGE GUN, because you know, that isn’t conspicuous, strange or creepy at all. She imagines threatening her father with the gun, and Fantasy Aníbal, who has frighteningly crazy eyes in that scene, answers that if she kills him, she’ll never find her daughter. Bwahahahahaha! Adriana shoots him nevertheless. Now we switch back to reality where Adriana is torn between her desperation and her conscience. “I’m sorry, God, I’m not a murderer. But what should I do, Virgencita, what should I do?”
* At the Balvaneras Vicky, who’s still obsessing over the relationship between Arriaga and Opalina, tells Tomasina that she doesn’t know if something happened yet, but she’s sure something will happen soon. Tomasina is “más perdida que la cabeza de Pancho Villa” (more lost than the head of Pancho Villa), and she doesn’t understand what the heck Ms. Vicky is talking about. Victoria informs her about José Ángel and his “spiritual guide”. She saw them together!!! It’s crystal clear, there’s something fishy going on between them!!! That man has some nerve!!! *Viewerville: calm down, bro*
* Nikki, who finally realized that Roy won’t pick her up that evening, joins them. She needs to talk with mother about Roy… who’s very serious about her. Victoria still can’t understand her fascination about that boy. A few days ago she seemed to like Guzmán! Nikki is so serious about Roy that she couldn’t even express her sentiments towards him with proper words: she and Roy has always been cool together, and when she saw him again, she felt super wow about him. Besides, her daddy loves him, too, and that is very important for her. Your dad? Nelson joins the ladies just in the right moment, so Victoria, la impactada can ask him about the situation. Why do you encourage this relationship? The kids haven’t seen each other for a very long time! And they don’t know what kind of man he became! Nelson answers that Roy is the son of their best friends, and he has a bright future, which makes him an ideal husband for Nikki. A husband?! Nikki senses that a big fight is in the making, so she tries to flee. Nelson agrees that they shouldn’t quarrel, and he kisses his furious wife passionately. Yuck, telenovela face attack! Neta rolls her eyes, because smooching parents are super-uncool, and she leaves the hall. And yes, this is the moment when the Angel enters the hall (because in telenovelas everyone has a sixth sense for these things). It’s a muy uncomfortable moment: Vicky and Arriaga look embarrassed, and Nelson fires a few snarky remarks at the big guy. After José Ángel apologizes and leaves, Victoria tells the Furminator that fortunately Nikki’s getting better, so they won’t have to fake their marriage for a long time. And she’ll sleep in her art studio tonight!
* At the hospital Aníbal tells Guzmán that he loves his daughters and his granddaughter very much, and he’ll do anything it takes to ensure their wellbeing. But he’s very worried about his little princess Nikki, and he begs Guzmi to trust him and tell him everything about her illness. In the meantime Adriana tries to sneak into the hospital room to listen to their conversation, but a nurse drags her away. Sorry, Miss, but visiting hours are over! A few minutes later she goes back to the room again, but she doesn’t notice that Frankie has already left. She hears Aníbal saying that “you’re the only one who knows my secret, I confide in you completely, and now I need you by my side more than ever”, but she doesn’t realize that he’s talking to someone on his cell phone.
* Kendra and Cris arrive at Cozumel, where we get another product placement (this time a nice lady tells Cristina what a fantastic place Cozumel is), Cristina is having a great time, and Kendra is praying for patience because her personal assistant is getting on her last nerve.
* At the Arriagas Little Orchid informs Betty and Salsero that Cristina is on a business trip with Miss Kendra. The couple look uncomfortable at the mention of Kendho, so Beatriz quickly starts talking about how happy Cris looked for having that job. Guillo, who had a nightmare again, interrupts them. While Beatriz is putting the little boy into bed, Salsero is about to leave… but Liliana holds him back and asks him to be careful with Beatriz. Please don’t hurt her, and if he’s serious about her, he should forget Kendra Ferreti. Salsero gets a phone call from Guzmán (Liliana’s face lights up), who asks for a free night off. Dances says okay, and then he tells Lili that the only woman he’s interested in is Beatriz. After Salsero leaves, Betty confesses to Little Orchid that she feels horrible for lying to Santino about what lowlife did, and then she tells the girl about the rape.
* Cristina’s absolutely enthusiastic about her luxurious hotel room in Cozumel. She’s simply adorable.
* In the hospital Guzmán notices Adriana, and remembers back to the day when he met that mysterious young woman at the ranch. Adri, who’s determined to find out everything he knows, flashes a wide, seductive smile, and says that she’s very happy to see him again.
* In the meantime Cristina’s soulmate, her husband, the love of her life is wondering around in the Balvanera mansion. He ends up in the kitchen where he meets Victoria. She asks him if he can’t sleep. No, he can’t. She says it must be his conscience: he made his bed, now he has to lie in it. *Viewerville: thanks, Vicky, that was very helpful* Arriaga can’t take any more of her jealous holier-than-thou remarks, so he starts confessing… a lot. Can’t she see how desperate he is? He can’t even think about cheating on his wife, but he has never felt like this before! He never had feelings that he couldn’t keep under control! And now he’s doing everything he can to avoid being unfaithful to Cristina. Victoria looks impactada, again.
* Adriana has a simple plan: have a drink with Guzmán, get drunk together, and make him spill the beans. She says her name is Apolonia Alvear, and she’s Adriana’s friend. She tells her even more lame lies about how she ended up in the Balvanera hacienda, and then she can’t stop talking about her best friend, Adriana. It’s obvious that Frankie sees right through her, but he seems to enjoy her company, and she really amuses him. She orders a glass of champagne to celebrate their reunion.
* At the Balvaneras Angel tries to explain his feelings with apples: he made an oath to be faithful to Cristina, to love her and respect her forever. And he has never thought about other women before. But now he is tormented by these strange feelings! He grabs her hands and says that he doesn’t want to feel this way towards this woman. He begs her to say something, anything. Victoria asks him if he thinks that woman feels the same way about him. Well, sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn’t. And that’s very confusing, and it’s driving him crazy. Please, say something! Vicky, who’s still swimming in the river Denial (by the Oblivious Bay), doesn’t get it. For God’s sake, Arriaga, I’m the least likely person to talk about these things! José Ángel gets angry: if she doesn’t listen to her, then with whom else could he talk about this? I don’t know, says Victoria. But not with me. Not with me! I hope you can solve this problem, Arriaga, says the woman, and then she flees from the kitchen.
* In the bar “Apolonia” is getting more drunk every minute, and she’s just talking and talking and talking about Adriana and her cold, calculating father, Aníbal Balvanera. To Aníbal if you don’t have money, you don’t exist. But Adriana is nothing like her family, and actually, Victoria is very different from their father, too. She’s generous and noble, but maybe she shouldn’t have stayed so close to her father… He surely kept her away from exploring her artistic side completely. Frankie finds Apolonia very intelligent and interesting. And what does she think about Miss Nikki? Oh, she’s a wild child, says Adri. But she’s very nice and charming if you push the right buttons. Guzmán notes that her fiancée, Roy Pavia obviously knows which buttons to push. Wow, he’s a very famous tennis player, and he was her first boyfriend, says Adri! Frankie says that Apolonia is surprisingly well-informed about the Balvaneras, to which she answers that no, she isn’t, because they live in different worlds, and she could never fit into that family. Cheers!
* Vicky’s now raging in her art studio… to poor sleepy Tomasina whom she woke up and dragged out of her bed. *LOL* Unbelieveable!!! Arriaga had the nerve to tell her about his future infidelity! That cynic bastard! Tomasina, who’s more clever than the whole Balvanera household combined, asks Vicky if the Angel was talking about Opalina. Well… he didn’t mention her name, says Victoria, but she’s sure she was talking about her. Completely sure!!! After all, she saw them hugging!!! *sorry for the abuse of the exclamation point*
* The tormented and almost-fallen Angel is packing his stuff into a bag. Because what’s the point of staying in this house if Victoria can’t notice how much he loves her?

Adri is up to no good. I can't wait to see what she is up to with Frankie : )
Roy is just as bad as we thought he was and menage a trois at that what a collosal jerk. He is even worse than FF is.
Will wait for your wonderful recap to comment more : )
Gotta go with Mads re Roy. As I watched him "operate," I thought, he's no FF in training, he's surpassed him already.
I feel so sorry for Nikki right now. She doesn't want to be pressured about her health, but she sure feels pressured about her wonderful future with Roy.
Arriaga managed to get through that whole confession without once mentioning who he was having "impure" thoughts about. Talk about miscommunication. Of course, now we know why Vicky was allowed to witness that loving, sentimental embrace between Arriaga and Opalina.
Ok, see everybody tomorrow--very late in the morning!
I had to laugh about Adri sitting there in a crowded hospital pulling this HUGE gun out and no one noticing.
What's better than driving several hours into work (ANOTHER snow storm here), already tired and cranky but finding my frustration melt as fast as the icicles on my coat from the images on my screen. For me, Eduardo is the ultimate. Sigh...
I only got the gist of the confession but does Vicky truly not realize JA means HER?? Now, where did I tuck away my beanie...
Madelaine, when I watched Roy with his way too young women, I shivered with disgust. He is pathetic - how can Nikki stand him? No charm whatsoever. Blech.
Anita, great point that Nikki is certainly pressured about Roy. How nice of her dear, devoted father to continue pushing her in his direction. Ack.
Sara, not only was Adri concealing firearms in the hospital, she was escorted out of Anibal's room but returned moments later. Security??
Francisco is going along with Adri (I'm sure simply to see what she has up her sleeve) but I was a little surprised to see he was in her bedroom. Hmmm.
Aribeth, cannot wait for your recap!! As you know, my translation skills are lacking and can't wait to hear exactly what JA said to Vicky.
Diana
I liked the interaction between Adri and Guzman, but I did even when they first met at the hacienda. This should be fun to see Adri try to seduce information about her missing daughter out of Guzman (info he doesn't have). Kind of weird though that Adri could be perceived as a love rival to her daughter (Lili) and her niece (Nikki) over the same man.
Not sure what Adri is up to, but Frankie doesn't believe she is who she says she is. She was getting rather sh!it-faced ... er .... smashed on that champagne, wasn't she?
I'm also anxious to see this strange, dreamy episode through your perspective.
Our lovers are all wandering through the woods, mismatched and out of sorts. Someone needs to sprinkle a little magic dust or read some caracoles ... or something.
Adri is the worst seductress ever, almost scary in the crazy lady vibes she gives off. Apo-loon-ia is right.
Not a good night for the Ikky's overall -- Frankie and the Big Guy are starting to call some bluffs, I think.
In case you were wondering how the Balvanera mansion looked like from the inside in real life: photo
I so enjoyed watching Cris' small town girl sees the big city. She was loving every second of touring the hotel and her somewhat spacious deluxe room.
Kendra's eye rolling and silent suffering were very much enjoyed. Cris having Kend take her pictures was great.
doris - JA IS honorable. That's what makes him (even more appealing). Huge sigh...
Diana
Diana, stay safe and warm! Just think -- tomorrow it will be spring and all this winter stuff will be in the past. (if you are in Cozumel, por ejemplo) :)
Vivi: I am with you too about Adri and Guzmi. They are so good together, but he is suspicious of her as Doris said. I really think he has no idea she is really Adriana Balvanera. Maybe he thinks she is a con artist, we'll have to wait and see.
Agree with all about JA. The guy is full of morals and he can't concieve of doing anything bad like cheating. Que es Hombre, sigh!
I also thought it was funny how Cristina basically has Kendra working for her. She was just enjoying the luxury while Kendra had to do the checking-in and take photos and everything. I am not sure Cristina understands what being an employee entails. She doesn't seem to do anything for Kendra at all, she just tags along and enjoys the perks. I'm all for it.
The product placement worked on me. I'm ready to go to Cozumel right now.
Question---Did you stroll down Balzac street today?
I am so glad that Adri didn't turn into a murderer last night, I guess
that the preview people were just playing with us.
I thought that Adri's acting last night was superb. Slowly getting wasted, she did it well, very convincing.
Boy Toy Roy 2+1? Is he going for a gold star or maybe a first place metal?
Diana---Cris is in vacation heaven.
Kendra? Hotel hell. So funny.
So when is JA going to be the "unfaithful" husband? Or---will
it start with Cris? Anyway, it looks like their mirrage is doomed.
Thanks for the mansion pictures Aribeth? The inside of the mansion on the set looks so much more beautiful and modern with the skylight, chandelier and big staircase.
the gringo
So Vickie walks out on the poor distraught man cause she thinks he's talking about Opalina. Understood, but still ironic after the many times JA has consoled Vickie about her problems.
ITA on Cris's joy in Cozumel. That was fun to watch. She wanted the photo to show Lili. I remember when Cris didn't even know how to use a cellphone.
Wondering what Salsero will do about KendaHo now. I'm sure he realizes KendaHo's the source of Lili's misinformation about him chasing her.
I really enjoyed watching Adriana and Guz sharing conversation over drinks. She seems like someone I'd love to have a drink with... what beautiful eyes and what a sweet smile... She may be crazy but I'd probably tell her everything I know.
Anibal's chat with the Guz cracked me up. He had him drive all the way over to the hospital to ask him to keep an eye on Nikki?
"That's it?"
"Yep...next!"
Carlos
I was laughing hard at the nickname Frankie gave to Roy: Roy el rollero. (Roy, the roller-skating little boy.)
And his name is Roy Pavia. In Hungarian Pávián means baboon, so I may call him "Roy the baboon" from now.
Niecie:
"Understood, but still ironic after the many times JA has consoled Vickie about her problems."
Agree, it's ironic, and she's very blind and selfish these days. But I don't know, I think in a reversed situation Arriaga would've done something similar. These feelings they have (longing, jealousy, guilt) are very complicated and confusing for them.
Adriana hears Aníbal say he wants Guzmán to tell him everything about his granddaughter. Aníbal is referring to Nikki. Adriana assumes he means Lucía. Highjinks ensue.
Cris cracked me up last night. She really was like a kid on her first big trip.
It will take a lot more than Nikki's illness and Roy's womanizing to make me feel sorry for her. She's still a spoiled brat who has no empathy or compassion. When she stops treating Guzman like crap and stops calling Liliana "Ratiana" I'll be able to stand her. I'm pretty sure she's gonna find out that Liliana is her prima, and I can't wait for that day.
My favorite line (among so many):
"At the Balvaneras Angel tries to explain his feelings with apples"
BTW, I have a punctuation policy: never apologize!!!!!!
I was trying to decide whether the girls' accents in English were deliberate or not? I thought they sounded sort of German. Maybe they were supposed to sound European? It's hard to say with telenovela English.
Aribeth, outstanding recap as usual. I loved it all. I think my favorite funny bit was the "calm down, bro" picture.
I'm looking forward to seeing how the rest of the evening goes for Guzman and Adri. They both really have a lot in common in the way they are so resentful of their parents. I know Guzman is destined for Nikki. I just have a hard time watching him fawn over, or being fawned over by, these little girls (Nikki, Lili, Polita). Adri's crazy, but she's a woman, and it's a different kind of interaction. Plus, it's fun to see Adri drunk. :)
"In the hospital Adriana is walking around with a HUGE GUN, because you know, that isn’t conspicuous, strange or creepy at all."
"Angel tries to explain his feelings with apples..."
"Vicky, who’s still swimming in the river Denial (by the Oblivious Bay)..."
This episode was so busy I didn't mind that Balzac wasn't in it.
"This episode was so busy I didn't mind that Balzac wasn't in it. "
Hahaha. That may be the standard by which all future episodes of this show will be measured.
a. Was Balzac in it?
b: If not, were we amused/distracted/entertained enough not to mind?
As much as I got a chortle out of Roy's new nickname, the Baboon, I'm afraid we'd be offending and disrespecting many a fine, upstanding baboon out there, who wouldn't want to be compared to Roy el Rollero (the meaning of which I missed completely).
You nailed it, Aribeth >>These feelings they have (longing, jealousy, guilt) are very complicated and confusing for them.<< I wonder how long before one of them says something to the other that cannot be misunderstood.
We know we've chosen teams already, but I hadn't expected to see Guzmi and Adri get along so well. They're both being playful and engaging and flirty. Sadly she's got daddy baggage and he's got mommy baggage, so I don't think it will work. Back to team Guzmi/Nikki.
Can't wait until tonight to see if Vicky finds out Arriaga wanted to leave for real and how she treats him after their little row in the kitchen.
And, boy! I appreciate your "with apples" explanation of Adri overhearing Anibal's phone convo. I watched it last night but the sequence of things went right over my head (Adri hears Anibal's talk with Guzmi about "nieta" and then returns to overhear the phone convo.) Yeah, she definitely has the wrong idea about how much Guzmi has. Thanks so much!
I'm still firmly on team Nikki/Guzmancito. I just don't see the Adri-Guzmi pairing.
"...river Denial (by the Oblivious Bay)" The 'Oblivious Bay' is a new one for me. I love it!!!
a. Was Balzac in it?
b: If not, were we amused/distracted/entertained enough not to mind?
NM --- so true.
Phew~! dodged a bullet! We just got our TV/Internet/Cable service restored a few minutes ago. (a line in the 'hood got cut) I was afraid I would miss tonight's episode and possible Bal-zac sighting. We're back in business. Yippeeeee! No AV withdrawals!!!!!
Also ditto with all the comments about the apples and the Denial River, by Oblivious Bay, lol. So loved the whole recap.
Too bad Vikki wasn't listening and Angel wasn't 'spailin' like he should have. They are the King and Queen of miscommunication, I must say. Too funny.
Roy has gotta go. Those accents sounded Russian to me too, Sara. German speakers sound different with the English. The Russian's have a certain accent when they speak English and that's what it sounded like to me. I really, really hope Nikki does not marry horrible Roy.
FF had his nerve, kissing on poor Ms Vikki and her having to remind him, yet one more time, their marriage is a sham. Too bad he won't take the hint. Ms Vikki needs some Extra Strength Listerine, jus' sayin'.
*Viewerville: calm down, bro*
made me laugh with delight. I just loved this Aribeth!!
Already cited but worth repeating: "beaten-up knight in the shining armor", "walking around with a HUGE GUN, because you know, that isn’t conspicuous, strange or creepy at all" and "the river Denial (by the Oblivious Bay)" (which is totally sidebar worthY) were my favs.
While frustrated by the poor communication and misunderstandings between Jose and Vicky, I'm tolerating it because it is helping to prevent them for doing something they will both be sorry for later. Both are honorable and there will need to be major life changes before the two can be together and be happy. Starting a life with cheating goes against both of thir moral characters. I hope they can be strong and wait.
Bea and Santino melt my heart...
A masterpiece. Period.
