Amores Verdaderos #101 Wed 4/3/13 Flaquita, it ain't liposuction!

Tonight, as the Balvanera clan and their groupies huddle in the hospital, we learn that an ICU is a perfect incubator not just for infection, but also for truth.

At the police station
Tomasina revises what was a dead-on description of espantoso Espanto.  If the police believe her, they will be combing tony prep schools looking for a somewhat androgynous 16 year-old Cuitlahuac Bonaparte.

At the auto graveyard
When the junkyard gang hears the wail of the sirens, el Talibán pushes Kendra away roughly.  Her body crashes into a car and then tumbles to the ground. [Methinks she won't salir con la Mia.] Meanwhile el T and the guy on the moto try to speed away.  When the cops cut off their escape route, they try to flee on foot.  There is a hail of gunfire.  Both bad guys end up dead.  Kendra is running around with a bag of loot, scurrying over cars like a cockroach.  She seems to have eluded the cops.  For the moment.

In Aníbal's room
The old man wrests his nitro from the odious Odette.  She continues to needle him about Victoria.  He decides to take her up on her offer -- he will go to the clinic with her and find out the truth.

In the hospital
Nikki is in anguish.  Why is her mother's surgery taking so long?  Roy reassures her:  It's not like it's a liposuction, Flaquita.

The Big Guy makes a phone call.  He tells the person on the other end how guilty he feels about what happened to Vikki.  [Since he only has one friend, we can guess who will be coming to the hospital to comfort him.]

Jocelyn and Doris show up and make appropriate noises first to Nelson, then to Nikki.  Doris talks about "positive energy".  (Roy talked earlier about "good vibes."  No prayers to the Virgin from these two, huh?)

Nelson gets a call from the cops.  They recovered the stolen money and jewels -- poor Kendra must have dropped the sack -- but the two baddies were killed.  Salsero listens and reflects that the story has Kendra Ferretti written all over it.   "Those who live by the sword, die by the sword," says Doris sententiously.

At the Balvanera Mansion
Polita doesn't really feel like partying tonight but since she promised Lili a birthday surprise, she will go see her for a bit.

At the Arriaga apartment
Lili has heard from her father that Miss Vikki is alive.  She passes the information along to her mother who has the grace not to grimace.  Thank God, she says.  (Are her fingers crossed?)

The Big Guy is beseeching the Virgin to protect Miss Vikki.  He jumps at Opalina's touch on his shoulder.  (Yup.  That's who he called.) It wasn't his decision to stop protecting Victoria, she reminds him, and he has nothing to feel guilty about.  He begs her to tell him if Vikki will survive.  He is so afraid ...

In the OR
The doctors have finished and their patient will be transferred to the Intensive Care Unit.  They aren't very hopeful ...

In the waiting room
Nelson is impatient, of course.  (Hey, there's a lot of money riding on this.)  Nikki wants to let Adriana know what's happening but she doesn't have her number.  "I do," pipes up Guzmán.  He'll call her. Nikki shows a flash of the Brat:  "How do you happen to have her number?"

In the chapel
Opalina knows better than the doctors.  "She's going to live!" she tells Arriaga.  He and Vikki will have many years together.

Somewhere in the city
Adriana is thinking of her Luciana.  It's her 18th birthday.  Who is celebrating it with her?
[Pipe down on the Patio!  Adriana can't hear you.  Besides, she'll find out when the writers say it's time.]

Frankie's call is a welcome surprise -- until she hears the news about Victoria.

At the Arriaga apartment
Cris is trying to get Lili to cheer up and enjoy her birthday.  When Polita shows up on her doorstep with her loud Las Mañanitas and invites Lili to go out, Cris pushes her to go out and celebrate.  "You only turn 18 once."  (Which for most of us, is plenty.)

At the hospital
Odette delivers Aníbal and then leaves him.  Her parting shot:  let her know where they will be holding the funeral for his daughter.

Aníbal joins the others in the waiting room.  Salsero tells him the whole thing was very strange.  Only Miss Vikki can say what really happened.  But why did she go out the service entrance?

Nikki takes her turn before the Virgin in the hospital chapel.  Guzmán joins her and gives her a comforting hug.  The Nikki Sad Song plays in the background.  "I'm so afraid," she tells him.  "Please stay with me.  Forever."  Roy the Boy chooses this moment to enter the chapel with a belligerent swagger.  He has overheard their exchange.  "Am I interrupting?" he asks, as people do when they know they are.  He came to tell her that her grandfather just arrived and he is asking for her.  Nikki leaves and Guzmán is set to follow her.  But Roy the Rollero stops him.  Frankie could probably take him in a fight but a word from Roy to his suegro, and Frankie will be out on his ass.  He reminds him that in Nikki's life, he is ranked número uno.   Frankie says nothing.  Just clenches that jaw again.

Nikki joins her Tatito and he tells her to buck up -- she is a Balvanera and they know how to kick ass, even in adversity.  The Boy is at her side but her attention is on Frankie who is now greeting Adriana.  Nikki isn't liking the way they clasp each other's hands.

Before she can act like a jerk about it, the surgeon enters the waiting room with news:  Victoria survived the surgery but she is in grave condition.  She lost a lot of blood and during the procedure, she suffered a cardiac arrest.  Fortunately they were able to resuscitate her.  They had to remove her spleen because the bullet had damaged it so badly.  Right now she is on a respirator and is in stable condition.  She will be in the Intensive Care Unit and is unable to have visitors.  Her prognosis  is uncertain.  They will know more as her condition evolves over the next few hours.

Roy the Boy has to leave for a training session (which most likely involves a couple of German blondes with wiener schnitzel for brains).  Jocelyn and Doris clear out too.  Nelson takes Nikki for something to eat, leaving Adriana alone with Aníbal.  The two reach a sort of truce as they continue the vigil for Vikki.

At Paula's apartment
A strangely subdued Cris shows up at the door.  She tells Paula and Bea that Lili went out with Polita to celebrate her birthday.  She didn't want to go, says Cris, because she was so worried about Miss Vikki.  But Cris persuaded her.  José Ángel called, she tells them.  He says Miss Vikki survived the operation.  And he's going to spend the whole night in the clinic.

Surprisingly, Paula notices that something is amiss and it has nothing to do with her.  Is something wrong? Cris admits she is very sad.  She feels like crying and she doesn't know why.

At the hospital
Nikki tells the Big Guy that he should have been protecting her mother.  If he had been there, nothing bad would have happened.  She wants things to go back to the way they were -- the bodyguard square dance is over.  No more changing partners.

Now Adriana and Nikki smooth things over between them.  Nikki even promises to help Adri find her daughter, if she can.

Speaking of virgins and worst birthdays ever
Polita and Lili have made their way to the karaoke club, Lili wearing the pretty dress that Miss Vikki gave her for her birthday. Polita babbles about hooking up with a couple of guys.  She wants to get past her guerito chulo, Frankie.  But Lili has something to get off her chest first.  She's kind of afraid that it will make Polita angry, though.  She spits it out:  She's in love with Francisco Guzmán.

Whoa.  Polita doesn't take it at all well.  "What a phony you are!  Hypocrite!  Traitor!"

Outside the ICU
A nurse mistakes the Big Guy for Vikki's husband.  She takes pity on him and agrees to sneak him in to see her for two minutes.  He suits up and enters the room where his beloved señora Victoria lies, tethered to a respirator.  He is verklempt, as are we.  It pains him to see her like that and he'd give anything to trade places with her.  He takes her hand and kisses it.  Te amo con toda mi alma, he tells her.  Her hand responds to his touch.  He looks at her and asks in wonder:  Are you listening to me?  Can you hear me?  Her eyes are closed ...

Avances:  Cris fears losing José Ángel.
José Ángel speaks his love for Vikki and she opens her eyes!

Thanks NovelaMaven for a great read. I missed the first part of th show and you made me feel like I was there. Just a note of interest about Espanto. He was Lopez, the head of personnel, in Fea. Remember his stroking his bald head? He was also the gypsy with the decorative scarring in Corazon. He is a favorite of mine

NovelaMaven:

You never fail to disappoint, what a marvelous recap for such a sturm und drung epi. Loved your whole recap and the title was so funny.

Can we hit Roy over the head. He needs a skillet bop to the head. Enough from his mouth already! He needs a serious zipper on it.

I liked the interaction with Guzmi and Adri, now Victoria, the one in Texas : ) don't get mean wrong, I am still Guzmi/Nikki, but I so like the friendship between Adri and Frankie. They so get each other.

Poor Cris, I really do feel for her, but Angel is gonna do what he is gonna do. He is just gonna stay with Ms Vikki until he knows she is ok. I think Angel is going to stay with Cris I really don't believe he will leave her.

Polita, now, shouldn't be mad at Lili. Lili is just sweet and innocent and was just telling her BFF how she felt about Frankie. Polita needs to get a grip. She never acted this way when she knew Nikki was into Guzmi.

Oh, the insult to the wiener schnitzel, lol, to those German Girls. Let's just say they have schmaltz for brains. I love wiener schnitzel! It's all crispy and golden and lemony. Too good for their brains I must say. Schmaltz is definitely better, lol.

I can't believe the Sulphurous one brought Anyballs to the hospital, who knew. I thought she'd throw him out of the car on the way over.

Best part of the epi, was Angel in Ms Vikki's hospital room and her squeezing his hand, sigh! And double sigh! Angel can cry, like well, an Angel. Best telenovela novio eva, sigh.

Darn typo, I meant don't get me wrong, not mean wrong, lol.

NovelaMaven I really enjoyed your recap, you did really amazing on getting the details down. Thank you!

This episode was a lot more calm compared to yesterdays chaos. Was definitely all over the place.

Anyways I think three things I want to comment on. First being Guzmancito touched my heart when I saw him and Nikki share a deep, honest moment where they both let down their guard of course due to a crisis but I love how they came together. Also Loved how Nikki slightly opened up to Guzmancito about asking him to stay with her always. Oh ad Guzmancito's crying scene I give him an A+, very believable, I even teared up during the heartfelt moment and also when Nikki prayed to the Virgin.

Second it's easy for me to say I am not a fan of Cristina, but I feel so bad for her. My heart truly goes out to her because though she hasn't said it, I feel she knows that Arriaga is not in love with her anymore and that now He is in love with Senora Victoria. Now I'm hoping she has some kind of alternative happy ending. :/

Last, finally Arriaga says he loves Senora Victoria while in the same room, but did she really hear it is my question...? I guess we'll have to wait to see tomorrow maybe.

P.s Liliana and polita club scene was funny when Liliana comes clean about being in love with Guzmancito and Polita becomes "enraged" lol.

Team Nikki/Guzmancito

Madelaine- I understand what you mean with Guzmancito and Adriana, but it better stay a friendship, that's all I'm saying lol. I wouldn't too much care for the idea of Nikki and her Tia competing for the same love interest. It would be too weird and gross, to me anyways.

"Can we hit Roy over the head. He needs a skillet bop to the head. Enough from his mouth already! He needs a serious zipper on it."
You're reading my mind Madelaine, lol

NovelaMaven:

I should proof read before I post, I meant you never disappoint. I'm so sorry. Not fail, I'm so sorry. Please forgive.

Novela Maven - thank you for the recap!

I say we throw Royero under a bus. Soon.

The new ams subdued Cristina is hard to wrap my brain around, after all the histrionics of her jealousy rages. They were so over the top that her calm tonight just seems like the writers took a wrong turn.

Anibal was stylin' in that European double-breasted blazer and jeans. . Those Balvaneras know how to dress.

thanks NovelaMaven. Enjoyed your recap. Madelaine you're so hilarious, I get addicted to your comments.
If I rely on Arriaga's friend, I'm thinking how can what she say about the future would happen unless Chris can find somebody to fall in love with and leave her family for him. It would be so cruel if she died! to remove her from the equation. Well Nelson is a different story, he was long gone before the two even realized they are falling for each other.
I also enjoyed the Lilian and Poli scene. See, all three of them, Nikki included are just showing signs of jealousy. Remember Lilian's violent reaction to Nikki and Nikki's rude and mean attitude towards the two. How lucky the object of their attention,i.e. Guzmancito.
I too, was moved by Guzmancito's tears. Not only does he look like a good crier but also a good kisser!!! I cried too when he cried in front of Paula.
Listen I saw a publicity picture of Liliana and Roytoyboy!!! would this be really coming soon? Yuck!!!Much as I do not want Ratiana with Guzmancito, I wouldn't wish someone like Roy for her. Maybe, the Tennis instructor please?

NovelaMaven-love your accounts of this campy TN. Expecially of your assessment of Tomasina's memory of that thug, "an androgynous 16 year old" . This was so true; especially after they showed her a ringer sketch of that thug and she totally rejected it.

Roy is totally wrong for Nikki; but he did stand up to Guzman, I wouldn't be against a redeemed version of Roy ending up with Lili.
If anyone has time to tell me who Opalina is I'd be grateful.

Good morning guys!

Thanks to all for your kind words and great comments.

Emarie:

Opalina is Arriaga's childhood friend, his hermana de alma. She is a seer ("vidente") who is able to divine the future, especially Arriaga's future with Vikki.

Some of us think that Opalina was (or is) in love with him the way Liliana is in love with Guzmán. But she set her romantic feelings aside long ago when she realized that he saw her only as his "hermanita."

Cris and Opalina don't get along well, for obvious reasons. But Lili adores her. Miss Vikki was kind of jealous of her because she thought Opalina was his mistress. I guess we're past that now. :)

I can't believe ...

Yes -- Lopez in La fea! I didn't see CS but I did enjoy the actor as "el Alacrán" in Triunfo del amor. He sneers and leers like nobody's business.

Madelaine:

No worries, amiga. I know what you meant. (I am forever gnashing my teeth over my own typos in this unforgiving comment section.)

Definitely, Roy is ripe for a sartenazo. I'm not sure about "schmaltz for brains" for Roy the Boy's girl toys. It makes them sound all over-the-top sentimental. The description might work for some other characters though ...

Didn't mean any offense to the wiener schnitzel. Lo siento :-)

I'm not going to hold my breath for a redeemed version of Royero. Not in this lifetime.

Lili got herself all tarted up to go out with Poli, didn't she? I'm not sure I liked the "luke", maybe it was the lipstick....? I hope Polita will come 'round and they'll be besties again. Soon.

NM - "schmaltz" in German means fat, lard, grease. Royero might have that instead of gray matter in his head. I could easily call him "lard head."

But talking of "schmaltzy", that's how I described the movie "War Horse" while finally watching it this past weekend. ;o) I grew up with that word, having parents that were born & raised in Brooklyn. LOL

NovelaMaven: While there were many witty lines in your stellar recap, "wiener schnitzel for brains" being my favorite, I loved your summary for its rather serious tone and the many thoughtful and insightful comments. "No prayers to the Virgin from these two, huh?)" and "She passes the information along to her mother who has the grace not to grimace. Thank God, she says (Are her fingers crossed?) " were excellent. And "sententiously"? A new word to me - gracias amiga. I love learning new words in English too!

Madelaine, I also love Francisco and Adriana's friendship. Men and women being true friends is something we see far too seldom. Nice that JA has Opalina and they have each other.

Interesting comments about Cris. Victoria, I also feel badly for Cris, especially as her world continues to crumble around her. Doris, her calm demeanor made her hearbreak all the more palpable. She is no longer cloaking her emotions in rage and ranting. There is now no doubt she has lost JA and her raw, naked calmness is all that remains. It was difficult to watch, especially as we know she has lost him emotionally if not (yet) physically.

Does Vicky hear JA's declaration? I think uttered words penetrate the subconscious and hope his words of love are of some comfort to her.

I would like to thank everyone for their prayers for Marc. He is now able to move his left arm and leg and while memory and concentration are an issue, he is speaking well. It will be a long road but I am very hopeful.

NovelaMaven, thank you for an excellent recap.

Diana

Victoria in Texas:

It WAS a good night for team Nikki/Guzmancito, wasn't it?

Poor Lili. That birthday night out was doomed from the start. Polita and Lili should have listened to their hearts: with Miss Vikki's life hanging by a thread, there's no way either one could have enjoyed herself. But yeah, Polita's outrage was pretty funny.

Doris:

I enjoyed your comment about the old man:
"Anibal was stylin' in that European double-breasted blazer and jeans. . Those Balvaneras know how to dress."

They do! Vikki managed to look chic in the ICU, ventilator and all.

I actually think the New Cristina is very compelling. A sudden quiet can be very ominous ...

Vida2:

Now that you mention it, all of Frankie's "girls" let their feelings show last night (Although I think Lili has moved past jealousy into hopelessness. Or maybe resignation.)

Lili and the Rollero? Nooooooooo!!! She deserves so much better. Unless the Boy Toy undergoes a Life-Changing Experience and becomes a Better Boy.

Diana:

I'm so glad that Marc is on his way to recovery. It's very good to hear from you and have you back here with us.

"Sententiously." Yes. The word just popped into my head when Doris tried to take the moral high ground that definitely didn't belong to her. (I mean Roy's mother. Not our Doris. She can take the moral high ground whenever she wants.)

As for liking Frankie and Adri's friendship, me three! (He is one of the few people who can coax a smile out of her.)

Doris:

"Lard Head" would work for the Rollero. It carries none of the figurative meaning that "schmaltz" has in English.

Lili definitely looked older. It kind of broke the illusion of just-turned-18.

She and Polita will get past this, I'm sure. It's not like either one of them has a real chance with Frankie anyway.

NovelaMaven- As funny and witty as always. Thanks amiga.

Thanks also for the reminder that Kendra plans to name her (assumed) daughter Mia. We never really discussed this interesting choice in name and its significance when she said it last episode. It just takes the usual villainous possessiveness to a whole new level.

I was glad to hear that the other witnesses (not the blind Tomi) caught the license plate of the criminals' motorcycle, allowing the cops to catch and kill them. I was pretty shocked by how quickly they were sent to the next world. I was looking forward to seeing the words "El Taliban" in such an unexpected context, for a while longer. In any case, this is a lucky break for Kendra. She still only has one bad guy, Espanto, to pay off and appease.

That second drawing of Espanto, based on Tomi’s delusions, was totally William Levy with thick dark hair. LOL!

Loved the title. Roy's comment was so insensitive…but it was funny.

Diana- Glad to see you back, and very happy to hear that your brother is on the mend. I'm still sending good thoughts and prayers your way.

Emarie- In addition to what NovelaMaven said, the other reason why there is tension between Opalina and Cris is because JA was out of town and with Opalina, supporting her while her mother was dying, when Cris went into early/difficult labor. She still holds a grudge about that. Plus, Opalina has always refused to read Cris's future, and she thinks it's because Opalina doesn't like her (while she is super close to Lili and JA and does readings for them all the time), or that Opalina sees something bad in Cris's future and just doesn't want to tell her.

Diana:

So glad you are back and that your brother is recovering, still praying for his full recovery : )

NovelaMaven:

Oh, I'd forgotten about the other meaning for schmaltz or schmaltzy. I was trying to come up with another German dish/condiment for those girls' brains. Weiner Schnitzel is just too good for them, lol.

Vida2:

Thanks, lol.

Vivi:

Thanks for fleshing out the Opalina picture. As you and Sara pointed out earlier, she is no ordinary character. She is more like a driver of the plot or a catalyst. But I like her for the element of magic she brings to the story.

Let's not forget her connection to Adriana -- she's the one who told her that her daughter was still alive.

"I'll call you "Mia" because everything will be MINE. MINE. MINE."
Yes, we let the "Mia" thing pass by unremarked. There is some very good writing on this show but very little of it is for Kendra whose dialogue is of the "Curses! Foiled again!" school of villainy. (On a recent snow day, I saw Marjorie de Sousa on El gordo y la flaca. She took great pains to tell the audience that SHE wasn't Kendra in real life, she was only acting a role. I'm thinking she's gotten a few letters from people who have trouble distinguishing life and art.)

Madelaine:

I hear they are serving wiener schnitzel for lunch today on the Patio.
:)

Great recap, NovelaMaven. You always manage to crack me up and today is no exception. Don't you love when one of the characters dumps a perfect recap title right into your lap?

Is Ratiana now getting makeup tips from Paula? Yikes! However the red birthday dress looks great. Why am I worried that Roy is going to wander into that very club on this very night?

Boy, the writers certainly gave us a violent reminder that this isn't simply a gentle romantic comedy... right between the eyes... literally.

I'm needing a dose of Balzac (heh heh) about now.

Carlos

Diana- Happy you are back and made it home safely. Glad to know your brother, Marc is starting to show movement. I will continue to pray for him in his recovery.
Welcome back!

Also your comment, "There is now no doubt she has lost JA and her raw, naked calmness is all that remains." That's exactly my main point, I think she is not only realizing it, but trying to also come to terms with it. It's a sad situation for her because you can tell that she is still in love with Arriaga, that hasn't changed. Now Cristina is probably realizing that what Arriaga and Senora Victoria feel for each other is more than what she thought it to be which was just a scandalous affair which has not taken place. Gosh, replaying her sad, hopeless face in my mind it truly is a tough situation to be in. She has no energy to be angry, only figure out how to deal with the situation.

Vida2- "I too, was moved by Guzmancito's tears. Not only does he look like a good crier but also a good kisser!!!"
I Lol'd on this comment. I'd like to believe so! Lol

Emarie- " I wouldn't be against a redeemed version of Roy ending up with Lili."
I never thought of Roy being able to redeem himself, but now that the thought has crossed my mind, I don't think I would be either as long as he genuinely and truly did change for the better.

Team Nikki/Guzmancito

Carlos:

I can't believe I forgot Balzac (heh heh). My bad.

"Boy, the writers certainly gave us a violent reminder that this isn't simply a gentle romantic comedy... right between the eyes... literally."

You know, the comedies aren't exactly mayhem-free zones either. Terrible things happen. People we care about suffer, even get killed. There is always always that sense of "memento mori" in a novela, whether it is labeled a comedy or a melodrama.

What is striking here though is that the deaths last night were video game deaths. Those two guys were ciphers; and we feel nothing, not satisfaction, not sorrow. That's probably bad for us, huh?

And yes, I do love it when the writers give us a line that screams "title." I bet Balzac would love it too. If he were, um, verbal.

The henchies in this TN, except for Espanto, don't stay around very long. There was Espanto's former partner, the one that helped him kidnap Nikki and Kendho, was killed and money went missing, there were those elevator henchies that stopped the elevator on the orders of the Odious one, and then they were tasked with retrieving that DVD that was supposed to have naughty bits on it involving Angel and Ms Vikki, they were fired by the Odious one. Then we had that Taliban guy and his cohort and now are both dead. Everyone that works for Kendho is guaranteed to be a dead henchie. Almost makes one want to be an Odious henchie, si?

Oh, and the other henchies that tried to kidnap Ms Vikki, both at the hacienda and at the mall, seemed to have disappeared, left the country.

The violence last night made me wonder if I was watching one of those narcovelas.
Viewerville was given a rather graphic shot between the eyes.

The initial police artist sketch looked more like Espantoso. By the time Tomi got done with it, I didn't know who that guy was. Beauty is definitely in the eyes of the beholder.

NovelaMaven---Great recap, I hardly
know where to start. Line after line was great.
Nikki shows a flash of brat---Yes, I noticed that last night.
Pipe down on the patio! Adriana can't hear you.
Odetta, BRUJA! Let her know where the funeral will be.
Roy's German blondes with with wiener schnitzel for brains. LOL
The bodyguard square dance is over.
No more changing partners.

Diana---Glad you are back and glad that Marc is doing better. Prayers are helpful for sure.

Madelaine---I have more typos than anyone. It always bothers me when I see them later after the post.

vida2---NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No Roller Boy for the sweet Little
Orchard. Please NOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
the gringo

Doris:

"The violence last night made me wonder if I was watching one of those narcovelas. "

I asked myself that question on Tuesday when the well-dressed woman looked at Miss Vikki sprawled in the street and said matter-of-factly: It looks like an "ajuste de cuentas", a settling of scores. That's what people say when they want to distance themselves from violence -- it's between narcos and it has nothing to do with us.

Hola Gringo:

Glad you enjoyed the recap. Little Lili sure has some staunch supporters on the Patio. Still, Roy is like a blob of cookie dough, not yet baked. Or maybe half-baked. He -- unlike, say, Kendra -- actually COULD change into a mensch and then be Lili-worthy. Maybe we could ask Opalina if that is likely to happen.

NovMav-Thank you again and again each week for bringing this schmaltzy piece of not much schnitzel, but altogether entertaining visual narrative to us.

Mads, I don't think Arriaga can leave Cris either, regardless of what Opalina says. I don't think he quite buys everything she sells, but it makes him feel good.

In this case, he thought Ms. Vikki might die and wanted to declare his love for her. They both know they have been skirting around that line in the sand of an amor prohibido and neither are willing to cross it, for their own good reasons. But this was different.

Roy would have a long way back to decent personhood, in my book, for Lili or any other decent lass. His upbringing and life experiences have taken him to a very selfish place. He's been poisoned at the well of his father mainly, but Ma goes along with it. Money is what makes life worth living, but he just doesn't want to work for it very hard.

I can't see Roy turning around on a dime or dollar to see Lili's qualities beyond her pobresa. For his lifestyle, he needs a stunning beauty by his side, a Nikki, not a down to earth, lovely but rather plain Lili. Course, we haven't really seen her come out of her shell yet, at just 18 and the sooner she learns that Guzmi is out of reach, the better.

Vida2--either the tennis instructor or the swimming instructor. They let that storyline rivalry drop like a rock in the pool.

Here's hoping that Nikki remembers these honest and tender moments with Guzmi, and remembers his words, before so rudely interrupted by the BoyToy. Did she see his tears? He held his anger in check since it would just upset Nikki again.

So, are we on the patio relieved that the death sentence on Ms. Vikki in the hospital tonight has been lifted by El Taliban's convenient demise? Wiener schnitzel for everyone. I didn't think I could go through another Rogelio/Bruno-Alonso/Isadora set up so soon.

NovMav--How about Fried Brains for Roy's pastime girls? Bratgehirn. Not as sonorous as Wiener Schnitzel.

Mads--*Frying pan* in German might be very useful: Bratpfanne. Roy needs a Bratpfanne to the head. It would indeed fit him nicely. On the other hand, if Nikki gets a little overly hot, she would need a Bratpfanne to cool her down.

Oh, Vivi--This is for you...
Gizzards in German is Muskelmagen. Good one, no?

Anita:

Bratpfanne is perfect. I'll have to remember that.

Carlos:

It's funny that the bruja Odiodette was at the Balvanera's the other day and Balzac (hee hee) was nowhere to be found, must have been hiding out cause he is scared of her. I wish he had given her a nip on the ankle.

Thanks, Novelamaven. Diana, I am sending prayers and good vibrations for Marc's speedy recovery. Maybe instead of schmaltz the cuties have schmutz [German for ''mess''] in their nogins. BoyToyRoy reminds me of every spoiled, wealthy teenage boy I've ever had to deal with. He really gets on my last nerve. Have you noticed that he always drops in at the mansion at mealtime. Is his family in such a financial crisis that the frig is empty at their house ? I had a beau once who loved my mother's cherry pie. I think that the pies kept us together a couple months beyond the relationship's expiration date. Come to think of it, the guy shared several character flaws with the BoyToy...including lying and running around with other German girls.

Susanlynn:

Now I have it schmutzkopf, that will work. They do have "messy heads" don't they, lol.

Great recap, mi amiga. I just loved "wiener schnitzel for brains". I didn't get to see the episode, but thanks to you now I don't have to. I'm sure your version is much better!

Sara

It was so sad to see a subdued Cristina last night. She is not her happy vibrant self. Deep down she knows that her marriage is just about over. There appears to be no fight left in her. What's going to happen when she finds out that Victoria is her sister? Still a lot left to go in this novela.
the gringo

Anita- "Muskelmagen" makes me think of muscle men, which makes me think of Guzman, and Daniel, and Jesus, and well, all of our current crop of muscle bound telenovios. :)

Anita:

I always enjoy your comments. It strikes me that the conversations that people seem to be most engaged in around here concern things that haven't even happened. The two blondes -- who may be German, though some think Russian -- had a walk-on part several episodes back and here we are trying to agree on the appropriate German food metaphor for their brains. Bratgehirn, Bratpfanne, Muskelmagen -- who cares what they mean? They roll off the tongue so delightfully.

I'm with you and Mads -- Arriaga can't leave Cris, nor can Vikki break up a marriage. But CRIS can leave Arriaga. I guess we'll have to stay tuned ...

Susanlynn:

You are so right about Roy and food. He is quite the little Hoover. Still, it's hard to define mealtimes at the Mansion. People are always trying to get Nikki to eat, of course, but it's only the staff who seem to sit down together; and most of the time, some imperious Balvanera calls them away from the table before they can lift a fork to mouth.

Sara:

I've missed you. Have you been away on spring break? I'm glad you liked the recap but I think you'd like the episode even more. No holds barred, my friend. None!

Diana - Welcome back! Glad to hear your brother Marc is doing better.

NovelaMaven - Terrific recap. Thanks for putting some lol in my afternoon. My favorite lines:

" ‘Am I interrupting?’ he asks, as people do when they know they are."

No prayers to the Virgin from these two, huh?

"Surprisingly, Paula notices that something is amiss and it has nothing to do with her."

On Opalina, it's strange that she has never ever done a reading for Cris. She doesn't just do readings for bosom buddies like JA and Lili, but also readily did Adriana and even gave Vickie a little crypic hint.

That dress looked great on Lili but, yep, she must've gotten makeup tips from Paula. Come on, somebody at least ask her to dance.

Niecie:

I believe the consensus on the Patio is that Opalina avoids doing a reading for Cris because she sees some dark things ahead and doesn't want to be forced to say them aloud.

"That dress looked great on Lili but, yep, she must've gotten makeup tips from Paula. Come on, somebody at least ask her to dance."

Even if Lili didn't get a Paula make-over, she's been hanging out with her for a while. I guess it's starting to show. But yeah, it would be nice if someone flirted with her a little bit or took her for a turn on the dance floor. Poor little orchid.

Wonder if Roy had weight problems in the past. He's always making off-the-cuff comments that are weight-related, even before he knew about Nikki's bulimia. His "it's not a liposuction, Flaquita" is an example. A boy his age might have easily said, "it's not a splinter, you know" - or something along those lines.

The OR scenes were not very dramatic. TNs need to infuse some "Grey's Anatomy" drama and/or realism (I know, I know, budget!) into their operating scenes. Or at least better acting (yes, I realize these are second or third-tier actors) once in a while.

Once Vikki comes around and explains what happened, how she did what she did to protect Tomasina, I think the tiger in Tomi will surface and she'll seek to avenge Vikki against Espanto. She'll go to the police and explain how her planets weren't lining up that day but now they are and her description will be spot-on.

Polita is too nice of a person to stay angry at Lili for long. They'll make up and Poli will be happy to have a fellow-sufferer to see her through her "Guerito withdrawals."

NovelaMaven--Offspring and I were in Costa Rica taking Spanish classes and living with a Tico family. ;-) Hubs might even let me go back for a month this Summer!

Wow, Sara -- that sounds like a blast! I hope your students know how lucky they are to have a teacher who is always stretching and learning more.

I took the offspring to Guatemala a few years ago to study a bit of Spanish and it was amazing.

Any tico slang for us?

Hey...new idea...maybe the two blondes' heads are filled with what we just had for dinner...sauerkraut!!!!...or maybe borsht .

Thank you so much NovelaMaven, for a witty, snappy, fantastic recap!

Yeah, I think it's Chris who is going to be removed from the picture, in one way or another. I don't see Big Angel leaving his wife for another woman. If for not for his wife's sake, but for his daughter. He couldn't look the Little Orchid in the face if he did that. But even so, I don't think he'd do it to Chris.

Poor Chris! She sees how it is. How sad.

I don't know if Roy the Boy can be redeemed, but I guess if I'm rooting for Salsa-Dude's redemption, I might as well add Roy into the mix too!

Sorry, NovelaMaven...no tico slang.

I read this yesterday but I couldn't comment on it: thank you, Maven for the fantastic recap! :)

Thanks NovelaMaven.
Vivi, "Muskelmagen" Don't forget our Mr. muscleman himself, Gabriel Soto of Refugio, isn't He a hunk?
