Qué Bonito Amor #9 (Mex 13-14.1) Thursday 4/25/13 Que Bonita Tristeza
My recording starts with Maria crying over the breakup to two of the Saucy Wenches outside the bar. Santos/Jose Alfredo is spying on her and tells himself he has to get a job somewhere, anywhere, so he doesn't make her suffer anymore. Has anyone brought this up as a trope yet? That doing the thing that's intended to keep someone from suffering is actually the thing that makes them suffer?
At home, Paloma is daydreaming about her teen heartthrob and doodling hearts in her notebook…she summons a vision of him right there inside her notebook and smooches it. Heh.
Meanwhile, he's mooning over his laptop where Paloma's name appears. His mom overhears him sighing over Paloma and asks him what's up and how school was. She asks why he's not unhappy about going to school anymore. "Ummm, cause I like it a lot." I think Mami knows something's up, but thankfully for him, she and Susanito's mom did not attend the same Mom classes!
Paloma is still smooching on that notebook in a way that makes me fear she'll end up with paper cuts all over her face. She gets busted by Isa, who won't take "nothing" for an answer. She tries to say she wasn't kissing her notebook, but come on, Isa's no fool. Paloma calls her "metiche" (nosy), but seriously, if you're going to get it on with a notebook in the middle of your living room, you're just asking to get caught!
Doña Prudencia is on the phone with a painter she hired to fix up a room, but they stood her up. Jose Alfredo offers to do it for her and she agrees, in exchange for a week's rent.
In Maria's dressing room, the Saucy Wench who's in love with Milamores tells her that this is why she says men deserve to be mistreated. One of the other Saucy Wenches tell her she needed to take it slow. Colosso listens at the door as Maria says that Jorge Alfredo doesn't want to see her anymore because he's leaving soon. That puts Colosso in a good mood and he leaves as the girls continue their conversation. The Saucy Wenches agree that Jorge Alfredo is trying to keep Maria from getting hurt, but Maria doesn't care. She thinks there's something more going on. The Saucy Wench gives two options, which are really both the same option: either he's married or he's seeing another woman. That's based on her seeing the way Milamores behaves.
Behind-the-bar hijinks. Banter between the bartender, waiter, and Mirta…she thinks they're slacking and yells at them to get to work. This all culminates in Pichi announcing to the bar patrons that he's got their drinks all set up…he's got a line of beers with shots balanced on the rims that he knocks over like dominos. Ok, that was actually kind of cool, but I bet if I tried it I'd end up with broken glass and alcohol all over my kitchen!
The curtain goes up on the stage and Coloso welcomes everyone and then introduces Maria. She sings Me Equivoque Contigo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Pwl-ajzsVo).
I made a mistake with you, big time,
In a way few people have been mistaken
I met you in church and I watched you quietly
So I wouldn't disturb your praying, which is sacred to me
Because of your innocent face and your direct gaze
And so many other things, I would have sworn…
But it's a sad reality you've given me
Is such a big disappointment having met you
Only God knows why he put you in my path.
Santos/Jose Alfredo is busy painting the apartment for Doña Prudencia. He uses one big wall to paint a heart and "Bonita"
I made a mistake with you
Santos/Jose Alfredo starts painting over the wall.
Maria gets a standing ovation.
Santos/Jose Alfredo shows off his first coat of paint, but he's still got to put another coat on tomorrow. Doña Prudencia suggests that he stand out by the cathedral with a sign announcing he's a painter. He hesitates, but only because he doesn't know where the cathedral is. Doña P gives him the 411.
Don Concho is nooooot happy that Jorge Alfredo won't be singing. Maria blames it on him not having money to pay for a traje. She says he should have given Jorge Alfredo an advance, but both Concho and Mirta insist that no one gets advances. Don Concho fires Maria and it looks like the entire staff is going to stand with her. Maria lays into Concho. Milamores says no way will they let him be so unfair. Colosso tells him if it concerns Maria, it concerns all of them. Concho insists that Maria is leaving. Colosso says if Maria goes, he goes too. Milamores chimes in and calls Concho on his BS…"You're always going on and on about how you were best buds with Maria's father, but the way you're treating her, it seems more like you were enemies!" Colosso demands to know why he's being so hard on Maria. Duuuuude! I bet he had a thing for Amalia, back in the day.
Elvira and her friends are out in her car, stalking Jose Alfredo.
Concho won't answer the question, so Colosso tells him he'd better find himself another singer, and that's not a threat. Don Concho dismisses them with the words from Ojala Que Te Vaya Bonito "I hope it goes well for you, I hope your sorrows are over, that they give you what I couldn't give you, that you meet better people." Milamores reminds him that the rest of them are going, too. Maria begs them not to. Susanito tells Don Concho he's sorry, but Maria's as much a mariachi as the rest of them and with mariachis it's all for one, and one for all. The guys start clearing out and one of them comments that he's been fired from better jobs. Before they can get out the door, Don Concho calls for negotiation. Colosso demands that Maria keep her job. Of course, he caves, but he says he'll throw them all out if they attempt mutiny again. Cheers and hugs all around.
Jose Alfredo/Santos comes out of the pension, carrying the trash and a paint can. Elvira, for some unknown reason, puts a scarf over her hair and goes on the offensive.
Maria thanks the guys as they all head out of the bar. Milamores says there's nothing to thank them for, they're like Musketeers…all for one, and one for all. Maria starts heading for home and Colosso takes the opportunity to say "I told you so" and insist on walking her home. Maria gets him to agree that she'll walk home alone. Probably because he'd rather go hang out with the guys anyway.
Elvira adheres herself to Jorge Alfredo's face just as Maria approaches. Maria goes running off. Jorge Alfredo, none the wise, tells Elvira not to ever do that again. He doesn't like women who don't respect themselves. Elvira tries to argue her way into his pants, so Jorge Alfredo has to spell it out…"I'm not interested in you." This only encourages Elvira. Ugh!
Maria gets home and has a cry in the living room. Paloma comes out of the bedroom, saying Amalia wasn't feeling well, so she had to give her a sedative. Maria tells Paloma that she found out the reason Jorge Alfredo broke up with her…he's seeing another woman. Isa is eavesdropping and hears this. All three sisters cry. Though I wouldn't put it past Isa to hunt Jorge Alfredo down and make him pay. She just seems like the type. Small…but deadly….
Colosso is buying all the drinks tonight. Jerkface. Colosso tries to collect on his bet with Susanito, but Susanito (oh, Susanito, how much do I love you in this moment!) bets him double or nothing that Jorge Alfredo will be back. Colosso accepts.
Don Concho is feeling a little…ok, a lot…emasculated. Mirta doesn't approve of what went on. Concho blames it on Colosso, but he's going to get revenge on him tomorrow. Mirta is all turned on by his tough talk and starts undressing the beast. Ew!
Doña Prudencia sees Jorge Alfredo coming back in and asks him for a favor. Her sister in Puebla needs some medicine that they're all out of in Puebla, but Prudencia managed to snag some there. She'd like Jorge Alfredo to deliver them for her and she'll pay his travel and everything.
Another bottle of tequila? Geez, guys, don't you have to work tomorrow? Milamores warns Colosso not to go chasing after Maria again, but his plea falls on deaf ears. Colosso breaks into El Rey. The guys applaud his performance and Colosso toasts to a long list of women.
Santos/Jorge Alfredo drops the medicines off with Doña Prudencia's sister Remedios. Remedios is grateful that Prudencia takes such good care of her. She's sending Jorge Alfredo back with some sweets that Prudencia likes. He charms her and she laughs that with a nurse like him, she's forgotten all her aches and pains. She wishes she'd had a son like him and assumes his mother must be proud of him. Jorge Alfredo looks sad, but says it's nothing. He just loves his mother and really misses her. Remedios urges him not to be away from his mother so long and says her love protects him, no matter how far away she is. Like Harry Potter's mum. What? You were thinking it.
Jorge Alfredo walks through the market in Puebla and asks a vendor how much for a rebozo (shawl). She asks who it's for and he daydreams about Maria. He tells her it's for a beautiful woman, as beautiful as an angel. "If you want one for the woman you love, take this one." She points him to a brown one that's hand-embroidered and charges him 500 pesos for it ($41.14 at today's rates). She promises the lady won't want to take it off.
Next, he sees an ad for some Chiles en Nogada outside a restaurant (chiles in walnut sauce--this is one of the dishes Tita prepared in Como Agua Para Chocolate. If you pick up a copy of the book, the recipes for all the dishes are included) and walks in. The waitress tells him he can't come to Puebla and not try the mole Poblano! He asks about the Chiles en Nogada and the waitress explains it's a typical Mexican dish that has all three colors of the flag, to celebrate independence. He's worried it's spicy, but she says not only is it not spicy, he'll probably think it's sweet. As she talks about how it's made, we see a woman in the kitchen preparing it. "It's filled with chopped fruits and topped with a walnut sauce made with milk, cheese, cream, and sugar, and then it's sprinkled with pomegranate seeds and parsley." It must be late because I suddenly have delusions of being able to make this dish following the recipe in Como Agua Para Chocolate that I only have in Spanish. Santos starts chowing down and makes a surprised, pleased face.
Santos finds an Internet café and reads an email from his sister Wendy, basically saying that he's torturing the family because they're all sure now that he's guilty. Just to be clear, Orange Julius Giuliano doesn't want Santos to come back or they're all busted, so he convinced Bruno to convince Wendy that Santos was guilty because that was going to help them somehow. Only now, she's telling him she thinks he's guilty, which is only going to make him want to come home more than he already does, so…? The Godfather keeps Orange G on the payroll why? Wendy says they're willing to face the consequences, even if the Feds think they're his accomplices, but she can't stand that innocent people like Bruno, Arnold, and Michael are paying for his crimes. Santos is heartbroken that she doesn't believe in him. Wendy claims that her disappointment isn't as strong as her love for him, which is only stronger now that she knows his life is in danger. Say what? What the hell did Bruno tell her?
Back in the DF, Maria is having trouble concentrating on her studies. She remembers kissing Jose Alfredo in the rain. Then she remembers him "kissing" the woman in the scarf and says he left her for another woman and he doesn't love her.
Santos finds a pay phone and calls….
Derecho is still trying to convince Justo that Santos is guilty. The maid comes in to announce that Santos is on the phone.
Justo asks for five minutes to talk to him and Derecho agrees. After they leave, Curtis reminds him the phones are bugged.
Out on the stairs, Orange Giuliano tells Justo the phones are probably bugged and to tell Santos he'll call him right back with Giuliano's phone.
Amalia sees Maria crying and tries to convince her that Jorge Alfredo is nothing but bad news. Maria doesn't agree. At least for a while she believed in love and had some hope. She won't put the traje back in its place, because that would be like forgetting about him. She doesn't say what she plans to do with it.
Justo tries to talk Santos into coming home, but now that the whole family thinks he's guilty, Santos doesn't think there's any point. He says whoever was trying to ruin his life succeeded. They've already tried to kill him twice. Justo says if that's the case, he'd rather have a son who's a fugitive than one who's dead. Santos would rather he not think he has a son who's a criminal. Justo wants him to keep in touch, but Santos won't until Justo realizes that he had no reason to doubt him. Justo tells him to be careful--the cops already know he's in Mexico. "If you need anything--" Santos says all he needed was his father's trust. "Do me a favor. Tell Mom and Wendy I love them. And I love you too, dad, even if you broke my heart." Justo hands the phone back to OG.
Santos gets a scare when a police vehicle turns on its siren briefly. He says to himself that he has to get back to LA and clear his name or he'll never get to be with Maria again. "God, help me! Get me out of this hell!"
Justo tells Derecho that he's changed his mind about handing his son over (and really, he can't hand him over if he doesn't have him to begin with). "His life is in danger, and if he was able to escape from you, then you're not capable of protecting him." OG smirks to himself.
At school, they're pairing up to find out how much carbon dioxide is in a bottle of soda. Paloma and Rodrigo pair up, so one of the Mean Girls shakes up the bottle of soda. Rodrigo ends up squirting it all over the class room, sending everyone into a fit of giggles. The teacher threatens to report the both, but Rodrigo gives her an innocent smile and says he must have shaken it by accident. Seriously…teenagers and soda bottles? No one saw this coming? The Mean Girls realize they failed.
Amalia and Isa come home to find Maria in the kitchen. She's been making "Rainbow Nopales," a recipe she made up. Amalia brags that Maria cooks as well as her grandmother did. "The sadder she was, the better she cooked." Amalia claims that tears and cooking just go together for women. Isa asks how to make it. "First you boil the nopales, then you top them with black beans, but you have to leave the edge uncovered…then you put some cheese on the top, then you top them with different colors of peppers, eggplant, pineapple." Sooo…cactus tostadas? Maria realizes they're out of tortillas, so she decides to go get some. Amalia says Paloma can do it, but Paloma isn't home. She's late…she's been late a lot lately. "That's cause she's been selling candy!" Isa pipes up. Amalia tells Maria to ignore her. "You finish making the food, we'll go get the tortillas. The doctor said it would be good for me to get some sun!" They rush out and Maria goes back to her moping.
Rodrigo sees Paloma in front of school. He tries to buy some candy, but she won't let him. So now he agrees to take the free candy, but only if she lets him help her sell them all…so that afterwards she can help him with his homework. He claims to be terrible at Spanish. Paloma agrees. The mean girls are all up in arms over Rodrigo being interested in Paloma.
Isa wonders why they're not telling Maria that Paloma has been selling candy. Amalia says they're preparing a surprise for Maria, that's why. Jorge Alfredo, back from his tour of Puebla, says hello and Amalia rushes past him to get to the tortillas, leaving him with Isa. Come on, Isa! Bring the smackdown! Isa crosses her arms, cocks her head to one side and informs Jorge Alfredo that she's not his "doll" and she doesn't want to be his friend anymore and neither does Paloma!
Rodrigo brings Paloma to his house and introduces her to his mother. Awwwww. "She's going to help me with my Spanish, mom!" His mom invites Paloma to stay and eat with them. "So, this is Paloma…" Rodrigo lets out a "mama!" Yeah, Gloria! Don't go all Doña Mancia on us!
Jorge Alfredo asks why she doesn't like him anymore.
Isa: Because you're very bad. You made my sister cry and you left her for another woman!
JA: No, doll, I'm not capable of trading in Bonita for anyone in the world.
Isa: You know liars go to hell, right?
JA: If only you knew I was already there.
Isa: Really? It must be because you kissed another girl instead of kissing my sister.
Jorge Alfredo explains it was the girl who kissed him and he'd never trade Maria for any other woman in the world. Amalia comes to collect Isa, but she turns back to ask Jorge Alfredo if he's lying to her. Jorge Alfredo shakes his head. Amalia thanks him for doing what she asked and says it's what's best for everyone. They walk away as two cops approach. Jorge Alfredo bends down to tie his shoes that seem to come mysteriously untied whenever there are cops around. Even the cops find that a little suspicious.
Paloma likes Rodrigo's big house. He says their house in Monterrey was even bigger. Their hands and eyes meet over a dropped napkin. Gloria interrupts to bring in the machaca (reconstituted dried meat, or meat that has been shredded and had the juices cooked out of it), which she says is the only thing Rodrigo likes…apart from staring at doves of different colors on his computer screen. Lady, I am warning you! So help me, I can only stand one of Doña Mancia! As she serves up the machaca, Gloria, Rodrigo, and Paloma all exchange embarassed glances with each other.
Jose Alfredo tells Doña Prudencia that her sister is doing well and sent her a package. He asks her to remind him where the painters get together. He's planning to go there, but he just has one errand to run.
Rodrigo walks Paloma home. She didn't realize how late it was. He offers to come in and explain, but Paloma says she'll only get chewed out, but it was worth it. She thanks him for helping her sell all the candy. He wonders what the money is for and when she says it's to help pay the rent he enthusiastically says in that case, he'll help her every day! Jr. Romeo tries to move in for some smoochies, and while Paloma might like that, she resists the temptation and runs inside.
Doña Prudencia actually made a cake for Mancia, which she's sharing with Amalia. Mancia wants to read Amalia's cards. She can tell Amalia is worried about Maria. Amalia cuts the cards into three stacks, for present, past, and future, and summons "Taquito" (the dog) to sit by her on the couch. Mancia is bothered by what she sees…hurt is coming, but she can't tell if it's for Amalia or one of her daughters.
Two out of three Saucy Wenches are hanging out with Maria when Jorge Alfredo comes walking up. Maria wants to talk to himalone. The Saucy Wenches saunter off past him. He asks to have a serious talk with her. "I've come to tell you the truth…."
Tomorrow: Maria finds out her mom had a private chat with Jorge Alfredo; Colosso plans a surprise for Maria, but he's the one who gets a surprise.
Labels: QBA
Elvira's scarf may have been a ploy to disguise herself initially; she knows about her father's rule about fraternization and wanted to catch Jorge Alfredo off guard. She's an idiot about this, though.
However, any kid gloves will be off when she finds out who Jorge Alfredo really is.
I don't think we need to worry about Gloria becoming like Mancia; on some level I think she is trying to prepare Rodrigo for an early independence. I wonder if he has any musical talent.
I dearly hope Santos does tell Maria the truth tonight as much as I hope we go to proper single episodes next week.
Thanks for this great and detailed recap, especially about the food. I really liked the way they showed how the food was made.
Poor Maria. So heartbroken. I really hope Jorge Alfredo tells her the truth already. But I think it will be more of the Elvira truth and not his other truth about his legal problems.
Jorge Alfredo is very enterprising. Liked how he painted the place for Dona Pru and ran that medicine to Puebla. He has a very good heart.
I like Isa she is very funny everytime she is on the screen. I like the faces she makes, like you are not going to get anything over on me, lol.
Urban:
ITA with you about Rodrigo.
I like Paloma and Rod. They are very cute, but those mean girls, they will just try to cause trouble.
5ft:
Break a leg. And thanks for the link.
Yes, 5ft, Jorge Alfredo has to stop that "drop and tie a shoelace" routine or the cops will pick him up for sure.
Madelaine & UA, ITA and wish Jorge Alfredo would just tell María the WHOLE truth already.
I totally enjoyed the parts of the episode that showcased food.
These episode and a half broadcasts have been fantastic; probably more for the casual viewer than the recappers!
Jarifa
La Joya del Norte
How old are Paloma and Rodrigo supposed to be? He's a good kid and a decent actor but considering who his parents are in this series I would have cast a better-looking kid.
It's great when they give us a peek into some of the cities. Never been to Pueba and it looks charming. I'm going to Mexico next week and now I'm gonna be on the lookout for a reboso! I tried chiles en nogado for the first time in East LA last summer. Super yummo!!!
Loved the reference to Harry Potter!
I had a hard time concentrating on the dialogue last night and thought the mariachis were fired y punto! Thanks to your recap, I won't be utterly lost with tonight's recap.
We learned Concho was Pedro's BFF.
We learned the LOLAPD has the Garza family phones tapped
Isa learned Elvira kissed Jorge Alfredo/Santos, not the other way around
Santos/JA learned Wendy & Justo think he's guilty
I think Paloma & Rodrigo are supposed to be 15, 16 years old.
Isa looks like she's about 11.
I like Amalia's circular train of thought:
Be mad at Jorge Alfredo for hurting Maria (what he actually did she doesn't know or care)
Ask Jorge Alfredo to stay away from Maria for hurting her, knowing this will hurt her
Jorge Alfredo complies with your wish, hurting Maria
Be mad at Jorge Alfredo for hurting Maria
Wash, rinse, repeat
There was no need for Amalia to have a stank attitude with Jorge Alfredo for kissing Elvira. She told JA to leave Maria alone. He broke up with Maria to leave her alone. You know this. So why be mad with JA for kissing another woman? While Amalia is justified in not trusting JA, it seems like she wants any excuse to dislike JA to keep him away from Maria. Any little excuse will do.
Remember in Destinos when Raquel's mother objected unreasonably to the handsome and wealthy Arturo? She was afraid that Raquel would move to Argentina. In QBA it's not just about L.A., it's about social class. Raquel of Destinos was a lawyer and Arturo did not represent a class threat to her parents. JA/Santos presents that threat to Amalia.
Oscar does not present a threat on either front. He's from the same social class. He may be doing better financially than he did before getting to D.F. but not in a way that would remove Maria completely from where she is. He seems to have no desire to alienate Amalia from Maria (who will need her when he cheats on her). That last item is what Amalia doesn't see.
Mariano was of the same class so he wouldn't have posed a risk of taking Teresa away like Arturo did.
I'd like to know what the deal was between Concho & Pedro...and if Concho is connected with Pedro's absence...
Loved your description of the leech Elvira's stalking moves...
Elvira adheres herself to Jorge Alfredo's face... Elvira tries to argue her way into his pants, so Jorge Alfredo has to spell it out… I'm not interested in you.
LOVED Santos' approach to Elvira... straight and to the point. GET LOST!! I AM NOT THAT INTO YOU!!...
if she doesn't get the point with that, she is just asking for being let down/dropped on her rear in the end. I bet losing him to a nobody like Maria will feel like a bucket of ice water down her back.
I kind of like the Paloma/Rodrigo simple teen love, a la Romeo and Juliet (Loved your nick Romeo Jr)
LOVED the pigeons (palomas) on his screen saver... cute!!
Isa is probably the smartest of the 3 sisters given her age. Just like Lucia was a great character in LHDM, I like the actor girl and the character here...
ITA with UA, Amalia does not see the issues with Coloso and Maria hooking up but she sees the worst case scenario with Jorge A and Maria hooking up precisely because Jorge A has been holding things on them and some of the things he said like leaving real soon, keep being 'edited' around. So she reads that he is not totally open and truthful, so she fears the worst of what he is or might be 'hiding'. And taking Maria away from her in many aspects is just the beginning of her fears.
Orange J thinks he's so smart getting Justo to use his phone on the suggestion that the household phones are bugged. Do we know that for sure? In any event now he has a phone number to trace to send thugs or cops after Santos. However since Santos was in Puebla they won't find him. Because as TN fans we know that if they went to the DF with a population of over 20 million they would immediately walk into the one restaurant, bar or shop that Santos would be at.
Loved the food presentations and explanations last night. It made me hungry and like the music celebrates so much of the Mexican culture.
So apparently Santos is a jack of all trades, high end car salesman, mariachi, mechanic and now painter. Amelia should worry less about him hurting Maria and snap him up for all his other talents LOL
I like the two kids together. Such a lot of sweetness and innocence there. I kept wondering if Paloma would see a picture of Oscar when she was at the house and make some artless comment about him being one of her sister's suitors. Still think that the kids relationship will lead to Oscar finding his son.
------------
LOLAPD said the phones were bugged when Justo & Co. left the room to take the call from Santos.
I was out all day yesterday so I didn't have a chance to get in on the consul/diplomatic immunity discussion. I think there may be a difference between an ambassador, his family and staff and a consul, his family and staff.
We had an incident some years ago in Washington, DC, where the son of a diplomat (can't remember if he was the son of the ambassador or not) hit an killed a young woman with his car and then claimed diplomatic immunity. It was legitimate, but the press and the citizens rose up in arms that this young man (drunk as a loon), could just go free after taking the life of this woman. Can't for the life of me remember the outcome, but it was very controversial at the time. Vivi, can you help out?
My question is--was Santos allowed to work? He didn't actually own the franchise, did he? We know Santos was able to give Mike a car, so what's the story there?
Anon207--Thank you for starting your lists. This will be a good one for us to have as a reference.
Be back later.
I'm also wondering if he ever spent any time in Mexico. If he and the family had been in the country when he was old enough to remember they would have been stationed in the DF and he sure would have known where the Zocalo was. Maybe Justo being a career diplomat hauled the family all over but not home. Santos/JA also seems a bit clueless about the food.
I remember that diplomatic kurfuffle years ago somehow I seem to remember the kid getting off and being sent home but that could have been a TV show. I remember when I was growing up in San Francisco the Ecuadorian counsel and his family lived behind my grandmother and I remember the teen age boys bragging about how they never had to pay parking tickets and could pretty much do what they pleased. We thought they were very worldly and sophisticated and talked them into teaching us the mambo. LOL

We still haven't heard Santos speak any other language other than Spanish so this is a stretch. If he has spent most of his life in the US he should be speaking English in the LA scenes.
OTHO, was his abuela that taught him mariachi songs living in L.A., too?
Most diplomats get time at home, if for no other reason than to put themselves in contact with their own people and issues before they return to their duty station.
Let's just tighten those beanies to the max and just enjoy Jorge Alfred and his dilemma.
Anita, La Dama del Queso
My first impression is that the ages are so off, that it's hard to believe this story. Jorge Salinas(although I love him immensely) is too old for this role. He looks about 10 years younger than his own father. Maria's sister Paloma, looks about 20. Her new boyfriend looks age appropriate. Not believable to me. Maria's mom looks incredibly healthy. I was picturing a sickly looking woman, but that is definitely not the case. Yes, I know I'm supposed to wear my beanie, but it's too hot to wear a beanie. It's 80 degrees here. Coming from watching Amor Bravio, it's hard for me to go back to the usual fodder of Televisa.
That said, I'm very sad to see such a great actor as Jorge Salinas stooping to do this ridiculous TN. He is so much better than this that it's painful to watch. I feel like I am TN-less right now, waiting for something descent to spend my time watching.
Both Santos & Wendy should be speaking ENGLISH the majority of the time, as well as LOLAPD. I don't think the actors can pull off speaking "American" so they don't. Even MICHAEL JOHNSON was speaking SPANISH while in America. If there's one character on the show that should be speaking English in America the majority of the time, Michael Johnson would be the one, lol.
The actress who plays Paloma is 18, so only a couple of years older than the Paloma character. If this is an American show, the actress who plays Paloma would be 27 years old. The entire original 90210 cast was a good 10 years older than the characters they portrayed. One actress was 30! The only 2 who were age appropriate were Tori Spelling & Brian Austin Green. Dylan looked 45!
Agree about the ages. Salinas is too old for this role. It's distracting. Ever see "Rosa salvaje"? Veronica Castro was almost 40 when she was filming that one and she was playing a teenager. And it showed. I don't know why Telerisa does this. Do they think people won't watch if there isn't an established star in the lead?
I'm enjoying the music. I'm not familiar with ranchera and I see this as an introduction.
(I'm happy the robot isn't using numbers. Most of the time you couldn't read them.)
Based on the degree of typecasting at this network I have to wonder whom they have him mind for a novela when it is being planned. Jorge Salinas' characters are always very "can do" and supremely alpha. They usually have a slightly dark side, though. Here he has no dark side, at least not so far.
Could they originally have had someone else in mind for the lead Considering how positive Santos is I wonder whether they originally may have thought of this role for Pablo Montero, who is 6 years younger than Jorge Salinas. Either way you had to predict they'd cast Pablo in anything having to do with ranchera music.
Jorge Salinas was the lead of Mariana de la Noche, in which his character was a journalist who took a job in a silver mine under an assumed name while attempting to solve a mystery. That role was originally conceived with Eduardo Santamarina in mind, but he didn't want it. Eduardo Yanez was not available at the time, and Jorge Salinas was actually the third choice. There may have been some rewriting for the casting change, but I don't remember. At any rate, I have difficulty seeing either of the other actors in that character.
Jorge Salinas infuses every character he plays with something unique in himself so it almost becomes impossible to imagine anyone else. No matter whom they thought of to replace him in LQNPA when he became ill, it could never have worked. Sebastian Rulli, who was rumored to be a replacement, could have done that role had he been the original casting choice, but JS is too difficult an act to follow.
