Qué Bonito Amor #27 (Mex 40-41.1) Tuesday 5/21/13

By Ellie

Capitulo 40: Maria bonita, Maria tan tonta

And action!

Maria is leaving the bar when out of nowhere a man with a knife comes at her, but she's no helpless woman! She puts up one heck of a fight, uses her suitcase as a weapon, and kicks as hard as she can. When she ends up on the floor and things start to look bad Ruben makes an appearance and scares off the would be killer, Maria only suffers a mild ankle sprain and Viewerville lets out a sigh of relief, I hope Rubens wife gets a refund from the attacker she hired!

Jorge, because he is a  wonderful boyfriend and lovely man makes up his mind to find Maria and walk her home... only once he finally finds her she's with Ruben who – like a vulture – refuses to leave the fresh meat also known as Maria  and insists on taking her home. Here we get the same old argument between the three: Jorge wants Ruben to hit the road, Ruben throws some shade at Jorge for being poor, and Maria tries to get the two men to stop fighting. Good luck with that sweetheart.

Maria because she's a little slow, starts in on Jorge about the whole Elvira situation and he tries to explain for the 100,287th time that nothing happened, that he was set up and well you know the rest but – of course – she refuses to believe him. Just then Elvira, mistress of the dark, shows up and makes it a point to tell Jorge that last night was super fun and that she can't wait for them to do it again.

Jorge is unable to reason with Maria and Ruben (ever the opportunist) sees what's going down and a offers Maria a ride home (again), Jorge warns her that if she leaves with Ruben it is sooo over between them and that they are Never EVER getting back together (Okay,I made that second part up), Maria – who clearly lacked oxygen at birth – looks straight at Jorge and accepts Rubens offer!

Ruben and Maria arrive at her home and he tells her that he is leaving his wife. Maria tries to tell him that he should not leave his family especially not his kids. He tells her that his marriage has been over for a while and that no love lasts forever (what a winner!) and that it is best for everyone, including the children, if he and his wife part ways.

In El Lay- This is all the happened in LA, then I'll go back to Mexico

The Garza family – Wendy, Justo, and Altagracia – are having the same discussion that they always have when we see them (Don't they get bored of talking about the same thing all the time? Can't they discuss the bad Laker season or something?). Wendy is going ahead with the wedding plans and her parents are trying to warn her that maybe marrying someone named Bruno who has questionable fashion sense and who they suspect helped set up her brother is maybe not such a good idea... but Wendy loves Bruno and she is going to marry him, even if there are no 600 guests and even if her father objects! Altagracia shows what a loving mother she is and tells Wendy that even if she does not agree with the wedding she will always love her and be there for her *sniff, sniff*.

Altagracia also tries to get Justo to agree to look for Santos, maybe they can set up a fake e-mail address to contact him, or go down to Mexico to search for him, Justo says they need to stay put because they don't want to lead the bad guys to Santos.

Justo also receives a visit from the DA (someone correct me if I'm wrong) who informs him that Mike has been convicted and will be in the pokey for 8 years. He could have saved himself but he stood by his friend instead and also they might convict Santos even if he is not there for his trial (cara de impactado!) and one more thing: Mike believes that Guliano is behind the whole scheme. Dun dun dun!

In a hotel room somewhere in LA the unholy trinity of Bruno, Arnold, and Guliano are holding a super secret meeting. Bruno confesses that he feels terrible about this whole mess and that he could not even look Santos' mom in the eye (look at that; it can feel shame!), and Guliano is not having any of it. They need to find Santos ASAP!

Back to Mexico

Jorge has had enough of Elvira and her lies and goes to confront her. He tells her very clearly that he does not want her and wont ever want her and that she needs to take a hike before he forgets his manners and treats her like the trash that she is (I made that last part up too). Just then Elvira's mommy shows up and tells Jorge to let go of her daughter. He tries to explain that he wants nothing to do with the spoiled brat but mommy seems to think her daughter is a super special snowflake and that everyone wants her. She is about to fire Jorge when Concho shows up and congratulates Jorge on the great show he and Maria put on. Clearly Jorge is going nowhere because Concho is not stupid enough to let go of the guy that's helping him make bank.

We get a few scenes with the other guys in the band. One of them is going to partner up with one of Elvira's friends and the other is going to take Ana to get some tortas because she saved his socks? (Don't ask me about that one guys, I just recap this stuff).

Oh, and also Coloso is whining to Fernando about Gloria and his son; he can't figure out what she wants from him, she's not even asking for money. Meanwhile Gloria is looking at Rod sleeping and apologizes for having to leave him (Woman, have some faith! Cancer does not mean death; there's always a chance at recovery!)

A midnight snack makes everything better (and if it doesn't at least you have a full belly).

At JNTR a very drunk but surprisingly smart Fernando gives Jorge a lecture that basically amounts to this: Even if you are having violent fantasies about Ruben don't act on them and don't do anything that will upset Maria or that will make Amalia hate you more.

Ruben is having some alone time at the strip bar and has come to the conclusion that Jorge is hiding something and Gosh darn it, he is going to launch an investigation and will find out all of Jorge's deep dark secrets.

Isa – who just says whatever is on her mind – finds Maria crying at the kitchen table and asks her "You want do die don't you? I'm sure that after mom told Jorge off he is never going to come back." Maria asks Isa to keep that thought to herself and asks why she is up so late, Isa says her doll Lupita wanted a cookie and Mari offers to make hot chocolate for them (and let me add that chocolate looked so good.)

Once Isa is safely tucked into bed Maria takes out a record and starts to sing along to Vecente Fernandes "Un mundo raro", the lyrics are here:

Cuando te hablen de amor y de iluciones,
y te ofrezcan un sol y un cielo entero,
si te acuerdas de mi, no me menciones,
porque vas a sentir amor del bueno.

Y si quieren saber de tu pasado,
es preciso decir una mentira,
di que vienes de alla de un mundo raro,
que no sabes llorar,
que no entiendes de amor,
y que nunca has amado.

y que nunca he llorado.

Porque yo a donde voy hablare de tu amor,
como un sueño dorado y olvidando el rencor
no dire que tu adios me volvio desgraciado.

Y si quieren saber de mi
pasado,
es preciso decir otra mentira,
les dire que llegue de un mundo raro,
que no se del dolor,
que triunfe en el amor,
y que nunca he llorado.

It's just a sad song about lost love and pretending that you've never been hurt by someone and that you've always won at love (Let me add that this song always gets me and thank goodness I'm over my break up because if that were not that case I'd hear this song and hit the tequila bottle, hard!)

Jorge, who is standing outside Maria's door, starts to sing along with her and once the song is over begs Maria to open the door and hear him out. She refuses, tells him love is shown by one's actions, and that his actions prove that he does not love her. I guess she forgot about how good he has been to her and her family and how he has always believed in her even when she has been in compromising situations (Told you guys she was slow). Anyhoo, Jorge (who is a sucker for punishment) stands outside in the bloody rain while Maria looks out her window and just stares at him. Jorge just go home and find yourself a lady that will allow you to explain yourself and wont be so quick to dump you just because of the things other people say to her. Yyou are far too pretty to be treated like this and no one deserves to be left outside in the rain. Either that or invest in an umbrella.

My nagging question of the night: Maria was attacked, why did no one think to call 911?

Tomorrow: Justo confronts the orange one, dun dun dun!

Good stuff, Ellie.

I wish somebody like Ana -- or even Irasema -- would advise Maria to deal with Elvira this way: Tell her she can have Jorge Alfredo because she doesn't want him. That would take at least half the wind out of her sails because she's into one-upwomanship. She is always out to prove she is more beautiful, more sexy, and more woman than anyone else and if her two friends had any brains they'd see that. This would take at least half her motive away.

That would have to be followed up by Jorge Alfredo publicly telling her to stay away from him. In front of not just her friends and possibly the guys but her parents.

However, since it is impossible for the writers to figure out how to do this, we will be stuck with her for a long while.

Obviously Ruben hasn't had time to figure it out but he should remember Lorena's threats and realize she is crazy enough to make that attack happen. And yes, why did nobody think to call the police?

Eli--This was wonderful--snarky and sentimental at the same time and some great asides (well, for us, maybe not for you--but glad to know you are on the mend).

Loved your:
...I hope Rubens wife gets a refund from the attacker she hired!
..Ruben who–like a vulture–refuses to leave the fresh meat
...he tries to explain for the 100,287th time that nothing happened
...Can't they discuss the bad Laker season or something?.

Oh, there are just too many good ones, Eli. I'll let other find them!

I keep thinking the same you two, call Maria's bluff, give her back the dang traje de charro, call you parents and get busy clearing your name.

THEN go back to Maria and show her you have been telling the truth all along, introduce her to your parents, pay off del Olmo, make all the mariachi guys dreams come true, get Irasema off the street and into Susanito's arms, set up a trust fund for Rodrigo, give Paloma her quinceanera fiesta, tell Maria he still loves her and buy the Mendoza family a nice little single-family dwelling in a nice neighborhood...(well, a girl can dream). That's a lot on one guy's plate, especially with Padrino & Luigi never forgiving or forgetting.

Anita La Dama del Queso

I just want to slap some sense into Maria. She is one of those people who will cut off her nose to spite her face. She so doesn't deserve JAntos who has been nothing but kind to her sand her ungrateful family.

Am I the only one who found the whole attack thing stupid. Evil woman hiding in THE bush watching inept attacker in front of a brightly lit bar. The mariachis take this night of all nights to stay in the club getting drunk, JAntos who always left around the same time as Maria inexplicably hangs around doing God knows what. Maria turns into Lara Croft but completely neglects to scream. Dios Mio this is pushing my stupid buttons.

So Gracia tells Whiney Wendy that Bruno doesn't really love her which goes over poorly with the spoiled brat. I think she deserves to marry the swine, have him rip her off and then find out he helped frame her brother.

Both Justo and Gracia are correct, she in wanting to hotfoot it to Mexico to find JAntos and he in not wanting to all attention to him. In reality they have been sending JAntos messages and could tell him where they would be staying. It is completely illegal for the US government to bug phones of diplomats.

Rueben is a pig but he isn't stupid. He sees that Santos is not intimidated by someone who would appear to be his better. It's sending warning bells that the man may not be what he claims. Lourdes was taken back by his attitude when she confronted him but she isn't smart enough to think there is something there.

Those previews of Justo telling OJ he thinks he is behind the frame isn't a smart thing to do. He should realize the man who could set up such a scheme didn't do it on his own and is dangerous.

Ellie - Thanks for a fun recap. I haven't been able to watch much, but now I feel caught up. Appreciate the detail.

Rueben is some charmer telling Maria that love doesn't last. As if she didn't know before, she should definitely know now that he's interested only in getting horizontal. It's too bad she's got to waste her time being polite to him.

Really liked your recap and all the snarky asides. "Maria – who clearly lacked oxygen at birth" and why don't they talk about the bad Lakers' season were just two out of many.

Nice poignant, yet sappy, scene at the end with JA and Maria singing on opposite sides of the glass. Yes, JA needs to invest in an umbrella, at least.

iBrava Ellie! You had me laughing so hard at so many snarky bits. My fav: “(Don't ask me about that one guys, I just recap this stuff).” LMAO!

We don’t have trials in absentia in this country. Just sayin’. We’ve got these silly notions here of due process and the constitutional right to confront your accuser. Sheesh. The slander of our legal system is getting a little deep.

I think that no one called 911 because it is a TN and no one ever calls 911 in TNs. :) But in addition, IME, in real life in Mexico, people don’t call the cops very often, either. The guy ran away, Maria was unharmed, and everybody just shrugs, and life goes on. Not just in Mexico, either. From what I’ve seen in various countries, if the cops are corrupt, underfunded, understaffed, and/or not very professional, people don’t bother with them and just deal with problems themselves. I think it’s a pretty accurate portrayal.

I think it’s significant that Ruben saw his wife at the scene of Maria’s assault. Say what you will about that loser, he isn’t dumb. And I also think it’s significant that Maria can wield that make up case like a battle axe and knee a guy in the nuts. Don’t mess with her.

She’s also got a mean streak. I dumped a few guys in my day, but I can’t ever remember not sitting down with him and having an adult conversation about it, especially if it was someone I actually cared about. And then to leave him out in the rain all night long? I wouldn’t do that to a dog.

DCG: “Dios Mio this is pushing my stupid buttons.” LOL! Whiney Wendy may deserve to go down with Bruno, but it’s actually her parents’ money (and Santos’ inheritance) they are after, not hers. If she had earned it herself, it’d be different.

Anita, I think you have just sketched out the plot summary for las ultimas semanas. :)

I hope our lovely Santos doesn't end up a muerto de pneumonia. :(

With all that Jorge Alfredo has done for Maria's family you'd think Amalia's attitude would improve about him. Instead she prefers to see him as the predator that Ruben is.

When it is so obvious that the very married Ruben is up to no good.

BTW if he cares at all about his children he should be finding out if Lorena's madness is hereditary.

Enough with the middle school hi-jinks between Maria/Jorge/Elvira/Coloso. It's now beyond ridiculous! 'you're my friend' 'you're not my friend' 'I love you' 'I hate you' 'she loves me' 'no, me' 'you don't love me' 'you don't believe me' 'he loves me' 'he wants me' 'she hates you' - again and again and again ... ya basta!

UA--That's a good one about Ruben checking out Lorena's locura as possibly being hereditary.

I think this episode was a lot of treading water, we've heard these convos before, same thing, over again.

Although, I was surprised to see Ruben at a strip joint after dropping Maria off--and oggling the fresh meat. Maybe it's not so much Maria he's so obsessed with it's his purient nature and wanting a fresh challenge. But with Maria's rejections, it only makes him want to try harder--and get a little something on the side.

The assault on Maria, it was all over in 60 seconds. The writers could have made more of it. We can always use a hospital or clinc scene to stretch things out. I did notice she was limping around the apartment. Maybe she really did hurt her ankle and they wrote the scene in after-the-fact. Basta with the speculation. It's too hard on the brain, after all.

Do people in Mexico really make hot chocolate on a burner with a two-foot flame in a clay pot?

Decie Girl--Loved your whole outburst. But you don't have any estupida buttons. It's the writers who are pushing each others' to see who can come up with the most estupideses.

(I keep swearing I'm only watching this for JS, but I'm getting a bit put out at him right now. And Lucia over on CI isn't making it any more creditable that they are married in real life!!!)

Carolina--You sound like a really decent person, working out where a relationship went wrong before showing him the door. I have a close friend who has maintained pretty good relationship with the men she broke up with over the years--and married now for 20 years and hub is ok with it.

Sometimes that strategy works, sometimes it doesn't (depending on the nature of the relationship), but in Maria and Jorge's relationship, it is so new, so fresh, they don't really know each other very well. The only times we've seen them together talking it's all about how Jorge can't live without her, she's so beautiful, grateful for her helping him, can't tell her about his past, etc. etc. etc. If they were in L.A., they would probably sign up for couples counseling.

Anita, one of the fundamentally ridiculous things about this TN, and from what I've seen, about most of them, is that the couple falls in love instantly and don't know each other or have any kind of reasonable basis for making the relationship work. The lil' love puppies, Paloma and Rodri, have spent more time together, just hanging out and getting to know each other than the so-called adults. You are so right that mainly what Maria and JAntos have talked about is how much in love they are.

I don't know that I am so decent, but I am pretty pragmatic. I wouldn't have a bad break up with a guy I worked with, that's for sure. And I would let a guy save face, even if I had my mind made up. You sit down and hear him out and at least he can leave with some of his dignity intact. Maria is probably afraid that if she is face to face with him, she won't be able to resist him. But then, who among us could?

If they were all in L.A. Amalia would be ranting about how wealthy Santos would be looking to take advantage of poor, innocent Maria and toss her aside later when he's tired of her.

I hope he has a chance to talk to Concho about Elvira's behavior. However, my gut tells me that she will continue to top herself, just like the Merry Piece did when we thought she couldn't do anything worse.

Nice job, amiga! You had me chuckling with your silly asides all the way through. I am so over this sort of see saw relationship. So much on again off again I'm starting to get sea-sick.

BTW, I think "El Lay" is a keeper! I loved it!

Thank you guys for all your kind words!
