Amores Verdaderos Cap 165, 7-2-13—Gramps (Anibal), you are dead to me.
Lo siento, I'm afraid this is going to be a rather haphazard recap tonight. I was sort of in and out when watching, so I know I missed stuff. I encourage everyone to read the comments because I'm counting on our wonderful commenters to fill in the blanks I will inevitably leave!
Well, at least I have screencaps. So it's going to be more of a screencappy recap than a recappy recap. Captas?

Please note, I call Anibal (Anyballs) "Gramps" now. My mom and I discuss this show daily and her name for him is Gramps, so Gramps it is! I can't think of him as anything else now.
* Lili is chatting with Polita. Lili is going to take Nikki's old room. TACKY.
* The Little Ape and Nikki are having a pleasant chat at home. She seems happy with her plight as waitress and Guzman helps show her how to ease her poor aching feet in a warm pan of water, a remedy to help her after a long day of labor. Labor, something she's never experienced before now.
* We return to the masked men who have broken into Carlos's place (with Vicki there) as the men proceed to give Carlos a first class beat-down. Carlos tries to resist but he's outnumbered. Vicki is tied up and has duct tape covering her mouth. She cries in terror as she is forced to watch poor Carlos get the snot beat out of him.
* Big Angel is preparing to leave for good and wonders to himself how he'll sleep with her so far away.
* Meanwhile, the hapless Zambrano (who always is the guy on duty when some crap goes down) returns from the errand he was sent on to find this chaos. He releases Vicki and she tells him what happened. He secures the apartment and then Vicki and he call the Mexican version of 911 because Carlos looks in pretty bad shape.
* Gramps has a spat with The Furry Fornicator. First they talk about how Salsa-Dude has been rehired by Gramps (which is good, yay Gramps). But then there is a tiff over Lili moving in and taking over Nikki's room! The FF thinks this is too much. Gramps says it's all the FF's fault, because he spilled the beans about Chris being the daughter of Gramps. We switch to a scene where Polita is helping Lili move INTO Nikki's room! Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, who thought this was a good idea. Lili is smugly saying that she'll add her "touch" to it, as Polita is putting the rest of Nikki's stuff (like her shoes) in a trashbag. Say this isn't happening. This has got to be the lamest idea ever. No, it won't generate drama down the road, oh of course not! The discussion continues and Polita sticks her foot in it and suggests that maybe Lili will get her own hunky bodyguard, who she'll then hook up with. (It worked with the other two Balvanera Babes!) Lili is NOT amused. Polita exits hastily.
* Back to Carlos's apartment and all the excitement. It looks like Carlos is okay, but banged up. Application of an ice pack to his face has occurred. Carlos wonders WHO could have it in for him? Meanwhile, Bruna arrives. She's introduced to Vikki. "THE Victoria Balvanera?" When it's told that Bruna will play the "Vikki" character in the film, Vikki seems less than enthused.
* Gramps sends Salsa-Dude off on an errand: Deliver two envelopes full of "something" (money, obviously) to two guys who he'll meet on the street somewhere. Salsa-Dude wonders to himself what is up. Viewerville knows who the culprit is for Carlos's beatdown now. YOU ARE DEAD TO ME, GRAMPS!!!!
* Vicki leaves Carlos's apartment with Zambrano in tow. She first calls Adri to tell her the news. Then she talks to Big Angel, who is staying at Opalina's place. They exchange the usual lovey-dovey talk and then muse how will they overcome this guilt . . .
* Back at the Ranch (errr, Balvanera Mansion), the staff in the kitchen get a delightful surprise when Estefano returns (from France, presumably, where Odioette has been taken?). Jean Marie is elated and Estefano gets to pick up Balzac (heh heh) and embrace the little pooch lovingly. Later Estefano gives Jean Marie a ring. These are our most normal and happy couple in the whole novela. Enjoy their stability for a moment.
* Estefano asks Jean Marie to "commit" to him. He is thrilled and of course says yes as he admires the beautiful ring.
* Adriana has arrived at Carlos's place. He's still icing his head and Bruna is hovering in the background. Adri is concerned and wants to have the security cameras viewed and to look for clues . . . Carlos laughs and says, don't bother, I know it was your dad . . .
* We switch to Big Angel, who is looking at Lili's picture and lamenting all that has happened. He misses her. He then has flashbacks of all his times with Vicki, and thinks about how he loves her too. Salsa-Dude comes in and has an envelope for him. It's his final paycheck and a letter from Vicki, where she encourages him to meet with a lawyer that she's talked with. Big Angel catches up with Salsa—he hears about how Salsa-Dude was fired by the FF for being Kendra's ex (Big Angel is shocked but recovers at hearing about the Ho) and also hears that Salsa-Dude is okay with this because now he's working for Gramps, which is MUCH better. The guys exchange pleasantries as Salsa says Big Angel will be missed. Big Angel talks about how distressed he is by the changes in Lili and the reasons for them. Then he fills in Salsa-Dude with the latest on his life with Vicki—as good as ever, and when the FF finally divorces her, he'll ask her to be his wife (mujer). White teeth are flashed by Big Angel.
* Vicki is getting ready for bed, and is bummed because for the first time, Big Angel won't be in the house. Thomasina tries to cheer her up by telling her to think of her wedding to the Big Angel. She smiles.
* Adri marches in on Gramps in his room and calls him on his order to have Carlos beat up. He denies, of course, and warns her that she's hooking up with a guy who must have a messy life because thugs come to beat him up. She doesn't buy this for a second. He angrily says that Carlos is just using her to get back at him (Gramps) and tells her that it's tacky for her to hook up with her sister's leftovers. She isn't going for this either, and reminds him that he already drove away her first love (Vicente, who is late in arriving! Come on dude, now is the time!). Gramps scoffs at that loser Vicente, blah blah.
* Lili gets ready for bed (NIKKI'S BED) and jumps on it happily. She pulls the pillows (NIKKI'S PILLOWS) towards her and says to herself that this is a whole new life! Squee!
* Big Angel looks through a book and thinks of Vikki. Vikki is asleep and has a dream where she is remembering all of Chris's fits of jealousy. Vikki wakes up very troubled.
* Lili arrives to the breakfast table. Gramps invites her to sit next to him. She still seems hesitant and in awe by all of this. He explains that he just wants to give her what he couldn't give her mom (Chris). She should enjoy it! Big Angel arrives to see Lili. He wants to have "a talk" with her. She looks snippily at him. (I HATE this!) She walks off to the other room as Big Angel stays behind to talk to Gramps. He wants Gramps to stop spoiling Lili. She's young and dazzled by all of this. Gramps says this is no big deal and she's "Balvanera"! Big Angel says oh no. Not that. He asks Gramps to "give him his daughter back." From one father to another, Big Angel says, I ask this of you.
* Salsa-Dude meets the other two guys (who turn out to be Odioette's fired henchmen) and gives them their envelopes. These guys seem so sketchy that Salsa-Dude thought-bubbles to himself and wonders, what is Gramps up to, anyway?
* Gramps is not sympathetic to Big Angel's pleas to back off. He tells Big Angel that while sure, Lili may have grown up okay under Big Angel's parentage, Big Angel should not be "selfish" and limit her now. She can do better than Big Angel's "mediocrity." Big Angel is muy, muy offended. He reminds Gramps that he can sure dole out money and riches, as he gave Adri and Vikki all material things, but Gramps denied them a father's love. Gramps poo-poos this. Big Angel yells that he won't lose Lili. Gramps replies, "You already have." Uh oh!
* Big Angel finally has his chat with Lili and it's awful, just awful. He wants her to get over all this crap with the Balvaneras and leave with him right now! She won't go as long as he's still with Vikki. Well, he won't do that. They have this really sad, awful, awful, AWFUL conversation that breaks my heart. He wants her to see reason and realize that she belongs at his side. She says no way, she's missed out on all these Balvanera goodies and she wants them now! He says that he'll always be ready to take her back, but if she doesn't stop with this attitude then he'll stop looking (buscar) for her. She says fine! She doesn't need him anyway! She storms off. It's awful, just awful.
* Nikki and the Little Ape are talking over breakfast. He's telling her of some jobs and finances. She says they need to pay bills and the cupboard is getting kinda empty. She seems in good spirits, though. The Little Ape thought-bubbles to himself that something has to happen soon, otherwise this is all going to fall apart.
* Big Angel is still in the kitchen (where he and Lili just had a chat) when Adri comes in with a letter from Vicki. Vicki says she's gone off by herself for a while, don't follow, she still loves him, yadda yadda. Big Angel and Adri talk about what's going on, Adri pleads with him to give Vikki some space. He laments that Vikki has left him.
* We return to the Little Ape's and Nikki's breakfast table. She's bitching that Lili's grandma is going to marry Gramps. She just can't overcome her resentment of Lili. (Wait until she finds out about her old bedroom!) Nikki rushes off to work. Felipe visits Guzmancito. He's brought a few groceries, which just depresses Guzmancito more because he realizes how broke he is and how it's difficult to get jobs since Gramps has blackballed him all over town. Felipe wants to give him some money. (Take it, I say! How many times has Guzmancito bailed out Felipe's gambling ass! Come on!) But Guzmancito is so noble and he refuses the money.
* Adri meets Lili in the mansion's greenhouse. Lili bitches about her dad. She feels bad about her mom's jealousy and thinks that Big Angel should respect his dead wife and not hook up with Vikki. She bitches about Vikki. Adri is sympathetic but says, "hey, that's my sister you're talking about!" Lil apologizes and explains that it's all just getting to her.
* Apparently Felipe has left and now it's Gramps's turn to visit the humble Little Gorilla home. He comes bearing a bribe offer. Guzman plays along with him. Gramps says to not bother with the whole honor and love thing. Sooner or later Nikki will get tired of all this poverty B.S. Guzman seems to have something up his sleeve because he coldly demands half a million US Dollars. Gramps starts to write a check. Oh, no, Guzman wants cash. Gramps presumes that Guzman wants to return to the Estados Unidos. Guzman lets him think this. Gramps leaves to get the cash.
* The Furry Fornicator talking with that doctor guy (the friend of Vikki's?) asking about a DNA paternity test for Mia. It'll take a week, he learns. Meanwhile, the Kendra-Ho, wearing a weird ribbon headband, vows revenge on the FF for doubting her and getting the test.
* Big Angel meets with that lawyer that Vikki mentioned in her letter. Turns out the lawyer has located the guy who ripped off Big Angel (waaaay in the beginning of the novela, the guy who was taking the house payments). Does Big Angel want a financial settlement from this guy, or does Big Angel want the guy put in jail? Big Angel reacts to this question but we don't know his decision yet.
* Gramps returns to Casa de Little Ape with the cash. Before the Little Ape answers the door, however, we see him setting up a little camera to film the proceedings. The transaction goes as planned. Gramps has a suitcase full of money and a first class ticket to Nuevo York. They did good business, and Gramps hopes to never see the Little Ape again. Likewise, the Little Ape replies. We end the episode with the Little Ape looking resolved and sad. What are you planning, Little Ape? Will Viewerville like it or think it's dumbass? I guess we'll have to tune in for the next episode to find out!
AVANCES: Gramps wastes no time telling Nikki that her Little Ape is flying first class to the Big Apple with a bunch of dough. Nikki doesn't believe him. We see her eyes widen as she's shown the bribing video (looks like she's in the Casa de Little Ape as she views). A scene where Adri slaps Gramps across the face (extra bonus points for Gramps's shocked look) as Nikki watches and shakes her head at Gramps disapprovingly. MUST SEE TV!!!

Elvira: The screen shots were perfection (especially JA - sigh) and your recap was sensational. Haphazard?? Hardly! This was organized, well detailed and filled to the brim with savvy, fun comments.
"Lili is going to take Nikki's old room. TACKY", "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, who thought this was a good idea", "(NIKKI'S BED)... (NIKKI'S PILLOWS)" and "(Take it, I say! How many times has Guzmancito bailed out Felipe's gambling ass! Come on!)" were but a few of my favorite lines.
While sympathetic to a character I've always liked, I couldn't help but cringe at Lili's rapture at taking over Nikki's room. While she didn't have Polita peeling grapes for her (as Carlos noted yesterday), Yet, did anyone else notice she made no move to help Polita with the chic trashbags of luggage? A sense of entitlement is starting to show and it is not a good look on our ex-Disney princess.
Balzac was a sight for sore eyes. Admist all the drama and heartache, he filled the screen with joy as did Estafano and Jean Marie who are but the only untroubled couple for the moment.
Elvira, I couldn't understand everything JA and Lili said, but agree with you that this rift is heartbreaking and must end soon.

Hope this isn't another prolonged separation between JA and Vicky. I do think it was wise to give Lili some time to reflect (although seems like wishful thinking at this point).

"Lili is going to take Nikki's old room. TACKY", "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, who thought this was a good idea", "(NIKKI'S BED)... (NIKKI'S PILLOWS)" and "(Take it, I say! How many times has Guzmancito bailed out Felipe's gambling ass! Come on!)" were but a few of my favorite lines.
While sympathetic to a character I've always liked, I couldn't help but cringe at Lili's rapture at taking over Nikki's room. While she didn't have Polita peeling grapes for her (as Carlos noted yesterday), Yet, did anyone else notice she made no move to help Polita with the chic trashbags of luggage? A sense of entitlement is starting to show and it is not a good look on our ex-Disney princess.
Balzac was a sight for sore eyes. Admist all the drama and heartache, he filled the screen with joy as did Estafano and Jean Marie who are but the only untroubled couple for the moment.
Elvira, I couldn't understand everything JA and Lili said, but agree with you that this rift is heartbreaking and must end soon.

I just had another thought about Guzmancito and the request for cash instead of a check. Maybe he and Nikki will keep this money and do some good with it. Since I'm usually bad with numbers, exactly how much money did Guzmancito ask Anyballs for? I heard millions of dollars but how much? I hope he and Nikki keep it and open a bidness maybe. That would solve all their financial problems but then again, maybe Guzmancito asked for the cash and made the video just to show Nikki how far Anyballs will go.

Guzman is too noble to keep it, although he and Nikki should. There current financial state is his fault. All they had to do is accept Vicky's intervention and he would have had a glowing reference and she probably would have suggested some possible employers too. But at this point Nikki wouldn't need to see video proof to believe Anibal tried to bribe Guzman to go away. That's why I don't get the point of doing the video and pretending to go along. It would only make sense if he and Nikki decided to keep the cash. But that is so against Guzman's principals, that I can't see that happening.
I think Guzman set this up to show not only Nikki, but everyone else, just how manipulative Anibal is.

Perhaps Guzman will use the video for leverage with Anyballs so Nikki and he can get work. Guzman knows that Anyballs doesn't want the rest of the family to see proof of his dirty deals. So far Anyballs lies - lies - lies when accused of various crimes and actions, and there is little proof (except for Carlos). Just a thought.

I am very curious what Guzmi is up to. Does he plan to use that video against Grumps somehow, or just take the money (as an inheritance for Nikki) and also Nikki and get away? I still say he should work for Yawn Carlos. There's a guy who's primed to hire security, AND hates Grumps! Perfect combo!
We know there's at least one extra bedroom in the palace: the guest room where Kend-ho stayed. Sure, it's drab, but if Lili is going to redecorate anyway... And there'd be another room if they would just get rid of that waste of oxygen Nils. I can't believe Adri actually approved of Lili taking over Nikki's room. When I was about 9 years old, the father of a friend, also 9 years old, broke up with his wife Tuesday and installed his girlfriend in their home Wednesday. My friend, who had issues with her mother, immediately took to calling her father's girlfriend "mama" and getting along chummily with her. It was quite the scandal in the neighborhood, especially among mothers. That's the only time I've seen someone adjust in one day to the type of issues Lili has had to adust to.

My two cents:
Nikki deserved the payback she got: losing her money, her social status and her home to Lili. However, I agree that it was tasteless giving her room to Lili, because for God's sake, there must be at least 4 or 5 perfectly luxurious rooms in that castle (not just Harry Potter's little cupboard under the stairs).
Lili is a better and nicer human being than Nikki, but right now she isn't very likeable. We can rationalize all her actions just like we analyzed why Neta was such a huge b*tch at the beginning (and here comes the obligatory part where we enumerate all the tragedies/bad things that happened to Lili and the shocks/disappointments she suffered). She's young, she's hurt, she's lost, and her mind is poisoned by Tatito.
Her reaction to the Arriaga/Victoria relationship is understandable because her mom just died (approximately 6 months ago), and she has every right to suspect JA banged Vicky while Cris was still alive. Now she's angry at them. It's okay. If 20 years pass by, and she's still mad at them, then I'll call her an idiot. (Yes, I call Vicky and Adriana idiots for throwing hissy fits whenever someone mentioned the mistress of their father. Geez, even the royal family of UK got used to Camilla Whatshername after that many years.)
It seems slowly she's becoming a stronger, tougher businesswoman who has a real passion for gardening. Good for her, and hopefully she won't end up as a bitter iron lady. And she's still very, genuinely nice to people who are not Nikki, Vicky, Roy or the Angel.

And while I understand Lili's resentment towards Arriaga and Vic, I found her efforts to separate them totally useless.
In my opinion you can't talk a 25+ years old adult out of a strong relationship - neither with reasons, nor with emotional blackmail. (Except a few extreme cases.) You either get used to it, or you just wait until they break up on their own.
Naturalmente this is Telenovelaland where people break up for the strangest reasons, but still.

I think that your memory of the early days is a little faulty. I think if you'll go back to the early comments for this show, you'll find that Nikki actually started off with very few supporters. I admit that I found her to be cute, but not many others shared that opinion in the early days... however, even you expressed some hope for her on Nov 14 when you said:

The throwing out Nikki's things is what offended me. And she herself should have declined that room until all was resolved and Nikki voluntarily gave up the room. Can't wait to see the redecoration and what happens when Nikki sees it. I hope that she won't care about the room, but will care about her things.

We'll see if Guzman takes the cash. But this is what I think he should do. Show the clip to Nikki. They both get on a plane to NYC and find jobs in the Big Apple. When they have stashed away enough they can return for Anibal's funeral.

I hope Polita at least plans to send that stuff over to Nikki, rather than throwing out her photos and mementos and things. She may be in cahoots with Lili, but she should still fear the displeasure of the Ikkis if she throws stuff away without authorization.
I want Guzmi and Nikki to use that money against Grumps somehow. Maybe hire detectives to dig up all his dirt, or a doctor who will do a lobotomy, or something. I just wonder, why only half a million? Why didn't he ask for more? Did he want to stick with an amount he thought Grumps could get in cash right away? Guzman made the video so that when he tells Anibal his family will find out that he tried to bribe him to leave Nikki and Anibal says, "I'll tell them it's a lie! Who are they going to believe - el gran Anibal Balvanera or a muerto de hambre like you, Guzman?" Guzman will answser - "The will believe el gran video. Here's your copy. Keep it, I have more." Smile, salute and exit as Anibal stands there with his jaw on the floor and his blue lenses teetering on the edge of his nose.

Maybe Guzman wanted to document Anibal committing a crime as leverage? I think making a cash transaction that large without going through proper channels is a crime.
It's always *possible* that Guzmancito could immigrate and lie on the customs form and not have his bag searched, but that's a pretty big chance to take. And if he did declare that much money, he'd have to explain why he had it, and he'd get all kinds of red tape and scrutiny. And when the agents called Anyballs to verify that this was legitimately Frankie's money, Anyballs would probably tell them that it was stolen or dirty.

Gringo please don't get angry with my opinion of the Little Orchid.
Vivi, I agree with you and I too have mentioned that it's just too bad that this character(Liliana's) was being transformed into an antagonist and were being written to enhance the protagonists. I liked the Disney Brat nee Princess back then when she was taking care of her orchids and plants though.
On that day of the revelations, Nikki went up to her room with Guzmancito, and didn't she say something to this effect to him, that she was so homesick of their apartment, that her room and the manse meant nothing to her anymore?
She was a serious Nikki speaking but later on tonight(I have seen the east cable episode) and as I write now she will be a NIkki loud and unthinking and will hurt Guzmancito witj her subconscious remark.
