Mentir Para Vivir #2 Tue 10/8/13 Nice Try, Rhoda Penmark*

Casa de Don Gabriel (Foyer):  We watch patiently as Pretty Ricky, agonizing over the death of his beloved father, performs several facial contortions while he struggles to produce a single tear.  He informs his aunt, Fidelia, of Don Gabriel’s death.  He was shot dead by a woman in a hotel.  Pretty Ricky will travel to pick up the body and she will contact Mariano, the priest and Sebastian, his younger brother.

Hotel El Descanso Foyer:  Lucina and Raquel (who's wearing Barbara Eden’s genie costume) return to the lobby of the hotel.  After a long day of hiding murder evidence, Raquel is ravenously hungry and asks Felipe to whip up some sandwiches.  Felipe tells them that all of the guests have checked out.  Once Felipe leaves, Raquel thanks Lucina for helping her friend.  Lucina did it because she doesn’t want Allina placed in an orphanage.  Raquel hid the gun in a flower pot and Lucina has Oriana’s passport.  Lucina tells Raquel that Pretty Ricky, Gabriel’s son, is on his way to town.

Police Station:  Lila, Don Gabriel’s widow, and her brother, Berto Martin, visit the lead detective.  Berto, who looks like a cuter, younger, greasier, and slightly nervous version of Grizzly Adams, listens as Lila and Det. Lopez discuss the shooting.  Lila wants to take the body back to Tiajuana, but Det. Lopez says they can’t release it until after the autopsy.

Breaker One-Nine, this here’s the Rubber Duck!  Connnnnvoyyyyyyyy of one truck!  Travelling in an 18 wheeler, perched on her mother’s lap and wearing two pony tails, a seemingly innocent Alina munches on a delicious pastry.  We all know that the mind of a homicidal maniac lies behind that cherub facade.  Nice try, Rhoda Penmark!  Armando Martinez, the driver, gives Oriana a white envelope filled with a small brick of cash.  He says that he also has her bags.

A Strange Family Reunion in the Foyer of an Upscale Hotel:  Pretty Ricky stiffens his body as his step-mother embraces him and hesitates before shaking Berto’s extended hand.  After enduring an unwanted molestation and forced pleasantries, Pretty Ricky introduces his “family” to Pierro, his friend.  Lila starts bitching about Gabriel being with another woman at the hotel.  Pretty Ricky tells her that he is going to pick up the body in the morning and bury it in the family crypt in Hermosillo.  Lila says that she’s his wife and she wants her husband buried in T.J.  Pretty Ricky and Pierro excuse themselves.  Lila tells Berto that Pretty Ricky has always hated her.

Police Station/Morgue:  As expected, the following morning, Pretty Ricky and Pierro visit the police station.  According to the owners of the hotel, a 5 or 6 year old girl accidentally shot his father with a 44 caliber gun.  Pierro says that the gun is too heavy for a child and Det. Lopez agrees.  However, Gabriel and Oriana only interacted for one day.  There was no reason for her to shoot him.  They have not found the weapon yet.  Manolo, tells them that Orianna is a widow from Columbia.  Pretty Ricky wants them to contact the Columbian authorities, but Manolo tells him there's a lot of red tape and bureaucracy levels to jump through.  His precinct is short-handed and doesn’t have a lot of money.  Pretty Ricky asks if they performed an autopsy on his father and then asks to visit the morgue.  Once there, the attendant pulls back the sheet and reveals peaceful Don Gabriel’s face.  Pretty Ricky tearfully promises his father that the killer will pay.

Cat Fight at the Villa El Descanso:  Lila and Berto have come to collect Gabriel’s things.  After introducing herself to Lucina and Raquel, Lila, calls Raquel the friend of a murderer.  Raquel quickly corrects her by insisting the whole thing was an accident.  In further attempts to make friends and influence enemies, Lila calls Lucina a tramp and slaps her in the face.  Lila believes that Lucina was boinking her husband and says so.  Berto pulls his sister away from the two women, but Raquel lunges at Lila.  Lucina grabs Raquel and takes care of her own business!  She promptly returns Lila’s blow and calls her a big honkin’ hypocrite.  Lucina reveals that Lila tricked Gabriel into marriage by pretending to be knocked up.  Lila screams that it’s a lie.  Pretty Ricky and Pierro show up in time to witness the cat fight from the hallway.  They do nothing to stop the altercation because they are men and men like to watch cat fights because clothing might be torn off (yes, even a hot MILF step-mother).  Lucina calls Felipe and tells him to pack up all of Gabriel’s sh*t and give it to Lila.  When Lila sees Pretty Ricky, she lies and tells him that Lucina refuses to give her Gabriel’s things.  Pretty Ricky basically calls her a liar and tells her to get his dad’s stuff and leave.

Actual Scene of the Crime:  Pretty Ricky introduces himself to Raquel, who sees dollar signs, a wedding and her children in his eyes.  The quartet of Pretty Ricky, Lucina, Raquel and Pierro converge to the patio to discuss the murder of Don Gabriel over cocktails.  Yes, it’s the same patio that overlooks the pool where Don Gabriel was shot and bled to death the previous day!  (Look closely!  The yellow tape is still surrounding the bloody pool.  Cheers!).  Pretty Ricky tells the ladies that Det. Lopez said that there are several conflicting stories about the death of his father.  The witness', “Senorita” Corona’s, story differs from theirs.  Raquel lies and says that Oriana is a widow from Columbia and her husband died in a car accident.  Oriana’s child shot Don Gabriel and she fled to protect the child from psychological damage.  Lucina tells them that the mother and child disappeared when Lucina and Raquel temporarily left them to calm down the other guests.   They swear that they didn’t help Oriana escape.  They have told the police all of this.  Raquel says Oriana is incapable of murdering a fly.  Lucina tells him to talk with the police if he wants to know more.  .

Upscale Hotel Lobby:  Lila and Berto pounce on Pretty Ricky when he returns to the hotel.  They want to know what the women said.  Pretty Ricky repeats the conversation and repeats that he will pick up Don Gabriel’s body in the morning.  She protests and says that she wants him buried in TJ, but Pretty Ricky will not hear of it.  She asks permission to attend the funeral.  He agrees to that.  She then asks if there was a will.  Pretty Ricky says that he doesn’t know and leaves.  Lila says that Pretty Ricky has always been arrogant.  Berto tells her not to piss Pretty Ricky off.

Out in the courtyard, Pretty Ricky asks Pierro if he believes Lucina and Raquel’s story.  Does he think that they are telling the truth?  Pierro thinks that they helped Oriana escape.   He also believes that the Oriana could have been scared for her daughter because the intense investigation would cause irreversible damage to the child.  Pretty Ricky believes that she may have ran for a different reason.  He says that he will put pressure on the police.

Hotel Posada Cristal:  Martinez escorts Oriana and her bad seed child into a darkened hotel room.  Once the driver leaves, Alina has the nerve to complain about the accommodations!  She demands to return to the beachside Villa El Descanso.  Oriana reminds Rhoda Alina that they are now fugitives from the law because she shot Don Gabriel in cold blood.

Villa El Descanso:  Raquel and Lucina are discussing their lack of business, when a vampire, wearing a blue jean mini-skirt and a white t-shirt, walks into the foyer.  She has no luggage and pays cash for a single room.  Raquel, who checks her in, asks to see her ID.  When Felipe escorts her to her room, we see tears in her eyes.  She folds her arms her chest and lays down in the casket, um…on top of the bed.  Meanwhile, back at the Hotel Posada Cristal, Oriana lies awake in her bed, watching the ceiling.

Martinez calls Lucina and provides her with Oriana’s contact information.  He has checked her in as his wife and she is using the name Sra. Martinez.  As she is hanging up with the driver, Felipe returns to the foyer; he complains that the vampire chick didn’t bite, nibble tip him.  He thinks she’s on drugs.

The following morning, Oriana and her bad seed child return to the hotel from a day of shopping therapy (hopefully there’s no crescent heeled tap shoes in those bags).  Raquel calls Oriana from the Villa El Descanso crime scene patio (what is wrong with these people?  Did they drain the pool yet?).  Raquel tells Oriana that they told the cops that Alina was the shooter, but they don’t believe them.  Oriana is the prime suspect because an eye witness saw her holding the gun.  Personally, I think it was all part of little Alina’s diabolical plot to frame her mother…nice try Rhoda Penmark!  Those adorable pig-tails aren’t fooling me one bit!  While Raquel is still speaking, the vampire chick walks by her wearing the same clothes from the previous night.  On the phone, Oriana stresses that she needs to look for work.  She can’t keep mooching off of them.  She wants to go home and take her chances with the law.  Raquel says that she, Lucina and all of their employees are at risk because they have all lied for her.  Oriana has to stay a fugitive.  Oriana says that she also needs to enroll Rhoda Alina in school soon.  Here we learn that before fleeing Columbia, Alina’s was up for the Excellent Penmanship Award in her class, but a little boy named Claudio won the medal instead.  Allina didn’t take the loss very well, from what I hear.

Funeral:  Pretty Ricky kneels before his godmother Paloma’s wheelchair and thanks her and her family for coming.  They ask for Fedelia.  She comes over, but she clearly hates the woman standing behind the wheelchair.  The woman offers her condolences.  As the priest gives the sermon, Sebastian, Pretty Ricky’s younger brother enters the funeral home and gives Pretty Ricky the evil eye.

After the funeral, Fedelia reveals that Gabriel was a womanizer and constantly cheated on Pretty Ricky’s mother.  She also says that she hates Lila guts because she stole Gabriel from her sister.  Ricky says that isn’t true and points out that the relationship was over ten years before Lila and Gabriel met.  He stops his aunt from berating his dead father.  Sabastian comes over and tells Pretty Ricky that he is returning to school.  Sabastian gives a flippant answer and goes upstairs.  Pretty Ricky tells Fedelia that Sebastian hates him.

Casa de Pretty Ricky:  After the funeral, Pretty Ricky leaves the main house and goes home to his gaudy blue house that clearly screams for woman or a gay man’s touch!  Everything and I do mean every inch of that house is painted blue with bits of white trim…blue exterior walls, blue stairs, blue interior walls, blue cabinets and blue counters!   The butler serves coffee and reports that Marilu called.  Pretty Ricky phones Det. Lopez who tells him that Oriana’s husband is alive and is wanted in Columbia for smuggling gold.

Villa El Descanso Pool Area:  Det. Lopez returns to Villa El Descanso hotel where Lucina and Raquel continue to boldly lie to his face.  They tell him that they weren’t aware that Oriana was wanted for smuggling gold.  He’s pissed off because they and their employees have given him a bogus description of Oriana.  He can’t send that description out to IDENTIKIT.  After the detective leaves, the vampire girl walks by them and ignores their mumbled greetings.  The vampire has a flash back of herself lying on a twin bed pregnant and strung out on drugs.  She was kicked out of a brothel and an inn because she was strung out.  Back in the in the present, she walks slowly into the sea.

Hotel Posada Cristal:  In another flashback scene, Oriana recalls Lucina advising her to tell Alina her that father, Jose Luis, is dead.  In the present, Alina looks adoringly at a picture of her father.  Her squeaky little voice wavers as she inquires about when her father is coming and why he hasn’t called.   Fresh tears fall from her tiny trembling pixie chin…Nice try, Rhoda Penmark!  Oriana finally tells Allina that her father died in a car accident on the way home from work.  He is in heaven now.  That’s a horrible thing to do to a little sociopath, Mommy Dearest!

Villa El Descanso:  Lucina and Felipe notice a small crowd gathered on the beach below the Villa El Descanso.  The vampire committed suicide by walking into the sun sea.  Her corpse is surrounded by the cops and a few lookeeloos.  Lucina denies knowing her and tells Det. Lopez that the dead girl was not a hotel guest.  Lopez polls the crowd to see if anyone else knows the vampire.  They zip the corpse into the body bag.

On the way back to the Bates Motel Villa El Descanso, Lucina tells Felipe to keep his mouth shut about the dead girl.  Two guest deaths at the same hotel over a two day period is very bad for business.

Upon entering the foyer, Lucina researches the vampire’s information in the hotel registry.  Her name was Ines Valdivia and not Hematophagia, Mistress of the Darkness as I had thought.  She was from Juarez City and as luck would have it, she also left her passport at the counter.  Lucina takes the keys to Ines’ hotel room.

Hotel Posada Cristal:  Oriana encourages Alina to eat her burger and fries because eating always will cheer up a child who was just told that a parent has died fifteen minutes before dinner.

Bates Motel Villa El Descanso:  In Ines’ hotel room, Lucina compares Oriana’s passport photo to Ines’ passport photo.  She smiles slyly and then packs up Ines’ possessions without the passport.  She also finds a charm that says:  To my little daughter with all my love, Mom. She also throws it into a black bag and tells Felipe to put it in the storage room.  Felipe questions why she doesn’t put the passport in the bag.  Lucina tells him to mind his own business.

Little Blue House:  Did they run out of other colors at Sherwin Williams?  I just don’t get the décor of this house!  Pretty Ricky and Pierro discuss his father’s murder over drinks.  Salude!  No matter what the occasion, Pretty Ricky always seems to find a way to enjoy a refreshing margarita.  Anyways, Pretty Ricky shares that Oriana and Alina flew to Mexico from Columbia.  He can’t understand why Oriana would kill his father because Don Gabriel was a good man.  He didn’t deserve to die lie that.  They think that Gabriel may have heard her speaking to her smuggler husband over the phone.  Pretty Ricky declares that she will rot in jail.

Raquel checks into an orange hotel building and calls Oriana.  OMGosh!  Her hotel room is all orange!  Mommy Dearest tells Raquel that Alina’s bummed out because she told the child that her father died in a car accident.  Raquel agrees that baiting the baby sociopath was for the best.

Casa de Paloma:  Pretty Ricky visits his godmother, Paloma.  The priest is also there.    It turns out that Ines' was Paloma's grand-daughter!  She is hiring a detective to look for her.  Uh Oh!  This is not gonna be good.  I can tell.

Hotel Posado Cristal:  Oriana encourages Alina to drink her chocolate shake, ‘cause chocolate shakes always cure the blues when you’ve just learned, during dinner, that your father has died and you’ll never see him again.  Once again, Allina’s big brown Puss-N-Boots eyes well up.  Nice try, Rhoda Penmark!  She wants to go home to her father!   Oriana further psychologically damages her child by reiterating that her father is dead as a doorknob…just like the man that you shot down like a dog on the beach.  Alina wants to know if her mother will die too.  She doesn’t want her mommy to die (right now).  Oriana explains that everyone will eventually die, but she'll be around for a long time (hopefully).

And that, dear friends is the absolutely, accurate, and incredibly true story of how Rhoda Penmark Alina became a child serial killer.

Cynderella, you're the best, this was HILARIOUS.

Some of my favorite parts:

"Pretty Ricky, agonizing over the death of his beloved father, performs several facial contortions while he struggles to produce a single tear."

"Berto, who looks like a cuter, younger, greasier, and slightly nervous version of Grizzly Adams"

"the mind of a homicidal maniac lies behind that cherubim-like façade"

"they are men and men like to watch cat fights because clothing might be torn off"

"his gaudy blue house that clearly screams for woman or a gay man’s touch"
- gay man's touch - LMAO
I'm sooo going to enjoy your recaps.

I believe Ines was Paloma's grand-daughter, not daughter.
Raquel and Lucina are really good at covering up crimes, makes one wonder what else happened at Villa of Descanso Eterno that they manage to hide.

Raquel sure seemed to fancy Ricky, I don't suppose she'd be willing to share him with Oriana, though...

The little actress playing Alina is very good, for one, she's a far better crier than David Zepeda.

The story is moving along rather fast, I like that.

This was excellent. Of course now I won't be able to look at Alina without picturing Patty McCormack.

Thanks, Adriana! I'm glad I could make you laugh.

I will also update change Ines to "grand".

I can understand why Raquel helps Oriana because their childhood friends. I don't understand why Lucina is so invested in this, but she gave an explanation, so I have to live with it. BUT!!!! Why would the employees risk their freedom and family for a Oriana? I would have been collecting the reward money and endearing myself to the millionaire son so he can be "appreciative", if ya know what I'm saying.

Anonymous...that was the goal. I'm glad you liked my recap.

Cynderella, you are absolutely hilarious! I loved your recap!! I looked up "The Bad Seed" to remind myself of that child actress. Like anon@0826, I will FOREVER see this Alina as Patty McCormack!

You are just hilarious!!!

Now, what is the meaning of all of the blue in Pretty Ricky's Place?

Mil gracias!

Fatima

Absolutely hilarious, Cynderella. Simply brilliant. It would have never occurred to me (and as you know, I have a rather devious mind) to cast that frightened precious little cherub as Rhoda Penmark here, but this is dead on. I'm still cracking up.

Wow, I sure didn't get to spend long with my favorite actress, Laisha Wilkins... and they certainly didn't do her any favors makeup-wise. The face that Raquel made after she checked in was wonderful.

Carlos

Thanks, Fatima!

Did you notice that the Raquel's hotel room was all orange? That's worse than waking up to all blue every morning. The set designer should be shot!

Carlos, don't look directly at her. That's how she'll get ya. LOL

I don't know who Laisha Wilkins is. I'd never heard of her until this TN.

I'm so glad that you're recapping a show I'm watching again. And of course it was so funny.

I thought it funny too that mom was pushing her child to eat right after she just told her her father was dead.
I missed the part that let us know who the unknown suicide committer was. Thanks for that clarification.
One thing though, I'm not sure if you were joking about Alina being the killer. I thought it was obvious that the killer must be the boyfriend of Lila, who happened to shoot his gun at the same time Alina was holding one. Am I thinking wrongly about this?

Cathy, we all think Alina is innocent...I guess Cynderella was joking... right?

Cynderella - Thanks for the laughs and the details. David Zepeda as "Pretty Ricky" is just too funny. My favorite: "They do nothing to stop the altercation because they are men and men like to watch cat fights because clothing might be torn off (yes, even a hot MILF step-mother)."

That does it for me. I'm rooting for the bad guy. No. 1 - He's played by Diego Olivera. No. 2 - Oriana had no right to tell Alina her daddy died AND expect the little girl to eat dinner right away.

I'd been wondering when Fabian Robles would show up, then realized he already had. I like his geeky look as Piero.

Niecie, I didn't realize he was Fabian Robles. At first I thought it was Jose Ron, but figured it couldn't be since he has blue eyes, but it never occurred to me that I knew who he was.

So many of these actors have been with David Zapeda in the past. The suicide woman, Rachel, Don Gabriel, Lila, even the detective. And who knows, maybe others who have yet to make an appearance.

Great recap Cynderella! I realized it was yours as soon as I got to the Vampire part lol.

Poor Alina, too many traumatic things are happening one after the other. Having to leave her home, the incident with Gabriel and now believing her father is dead.

My favorite scene was the funeral. I liked the camera work there, especially when we were introduced to Sebastián.

Well, Laisha came and went. At least she did a great job looking depressed and her dead corpse was a little creepy. Sorry you couldn't see more of her and in different conditions Carlos.

On a sidenote, Mayrín and Laisha were in the same class at CEA (the Televisa school of acting) and debuted together in the same show Mi Generación.

Jarocha

Thank you for the recap! Cyn, Laisha was in LFdD with DZ (it seems as though there are about 5 actors/actresses in this TN who were in LFdD.) She also had a small role in LFMB and if I'm not mistaken I know she was in a TN with Sebastian Rulli but I don't remember the name. I believe she was the villain in that one. I almost didn't recognize Fabian Robles. His hair is very different in this TN.

If Raquel is interested in "Pretty Ricky" then I wonder what that will mean for her friendship with Oriana down the line.

I have yet to be convinced that pairing DZ with Mayrin was a good idea. I think he has better chemistry with Altair. However, both he and Altair are probably best as villians.

Hi CathyX!

I don't believe that Alina did it for the following reasons:

1. She repeats that she didn't do anything. She keeps asking for her father because "he would believe her".

2. Both Pierro and Manolo say that the gun was two heavy for her.

3. They've done the autopsy. It was a 44 caliber bullet. They don't have the gun in order to do the ballistics test. So, we don't even know if she is the one who fired the gun or even if the gun she had was a 44. Does that makes sense?

too...not two...

Thanks for reading Niecie in MD.

Yeah, I thought that was odd...

Your father's dead...eat a sandwich.

CathyX,

Did you also notice that the 1st guy that greeted Ricardo at the funeral played Enrique in Abismo? David Z was the lead in Abismo.

Yes, Cynderella, of course it makes sense, but I wasn't sure you though she was innocent by the nickname you gave her.

And about your next comment, yep, I forgot to add him to my list. He's the one who looks like Eliot Gould to me.

Jarocha,

I have a strange sense of humor, but she looked like a zombie or vampire to me. She could have been in Twilight or something. I didn't want to call her "the druggy" because I am not judgmental and that is rude. LOL What if she were just anemic or something?

Cynderella, yes, I saw that orange. There is warmth to orange, but blue can be kind of lacking in warmth.

I gotta tell ya, I KNOW I am going to enjoy your recaps. Just LOVE the Rhoda Penmark biz. BTW, do agree with you that the Alina kid is most likely innocent for all of the reasons you've stated.

Wicked sense of humor and I love it!

Fatima

Good work!

That gun was too small to be a 44 but too tough for a child that size to shoot.

On the subject of Rhoda Penmark, has there ever been a novela kid on that level of evil? I've been watching novelas for 20 years and I can't recall one like that.

Thanks Cyn for a great recap. This is the first time I've been on board with you and I can tell already that I'm going to enjoy the ride. I read the comments before reading the recap, so I knew that you realized that Alina was not the killer. That made your "snark" descriptions even more hilarious.

Ugh! David Zepeda ... Ugh! Tried, but can't stand to watch his attempts at "acting" ... so, bailing out of this one.

David Zepeda: Ivan/LFDD ; Pretty Ricky/MPV

Laisha Wilkins: Maripaz/LFDD; Vampire Chick/MPV

Ferdinando Valencia: Saul/LFDD; Berto/MPV

Alejandro Tommasi: Gerardo/LFDD; Gabriel/MPV

Leticia Perdigon: Arcelia/LFDD; Lady that Pretty Ricky's Aunt Can't Stand/MPV

Thanks Urban! I've only been watching novelas for 3 years. I can't help you with the "evil children" theme. However, I've seen some old ones. Unimas shows old TNs during the day.

Foxy, Wait, before saying that you like my style. I will get more obnoxious as time goes on. You may not like my sense of humor in a couple of weeks. LOL

Anon@5:23 3 years ago, I was channel surfing when I saw Mario Cimarro alone soaping himself up in a shower seen in Gata Savaje. It was the first TN that I had ever watched. Why am I telling you this? I didn't start watching TNs because of the acting and by golly, I am not going to stop watching a TN because of the acting.

Anon207: it's good to hear from you! Where have ya been?

Anon207, I like your list!

Fatima

Thank you, Cynderella, for a recap that was indeed hilarious, even though most (all?) of the pop culture jokes whizzed right over my head. Not that I mind; I think I prefer it that way.

I rather like DZ. He seems more relaxed this time around than he did in Abismo.

I think the little midget murderess is not much of an actor, but maybe she'll improve. One can only hope. At least so far, she hasn't done anything obnoxious. That's a welcome change for a TN kid. (And no, I don't think she is the killer.)

I'm still keeping an open mind, but desperately looking for something, anything that will hook me on this one.

Here I am, a day late and more than a dollar short. Cynderella, your title almost made me fall over. Just perfect! I haven't thought of Rhoda Penmark in a while but comparing her to la pobre Alina is hilarious. Nice job.

UA, in my relatively short stint of telenovela watching I can't recall, offhand, a telenovela child on the level of Rhoda Penmark. She is memorable, no?

Breaker One-Nine, very funny.

Also, good call on the vampire. That's it for Laisha? Sheesh, what a waste of talent.

Cynderella, thanks for the laughs.
