Lo Que La Vida Me Robó, # 166, 7-2-2014--Ding Dong The Wicked No Balls Governor Is (Might Be?) Dead!
It's going to be a quickie tonight. I was away at a conference in DC and just got back and also my computer has been down for the count since last Thursday. Luckily, our tech department gave me a loaner today so I could do the recap, but I had to try to take notes while watching in real time since I wasn't able to watch in advance. Please feel free to add anything I missed.
Before I begin, I recently read an article about this and wanted to pay tribute to our Gracie's phenomenal crying abilities tonight:
Montserrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrat! (Really crying about Fabs) |
Ready for her Twilight cameo |
As Adolfo is about to leave Mansion Mendoza-Basurto, his cell phone rings. It's Nadia with great news: Pedro just got his no-balls self-busted up by Victor, ran away in disgrace, and now Nadia and Victoria are safe and the whole family is together again.
Adolfo isn't exactly thrilled by this news since he knows Pedro will never let Victoria and Nadia go without a fight. He is also worried about Josefina's whereabout given Pedro's previous threats and asks Nadia if Josefina is also safe. He begs Nadia to be careful and not to go out. Victor must protect them now. Nadia begs Adolfo to be careful, too, and wonders if he's joining them for dinner. Seemingly grimly aware of the task before him, Adolfo tells her, no, that he's got something to do. He tells her that he loves all of them and heads out.
In another part of town, José-Luis is trying his luck yet again with Montse hoping for some nookie, this time also trying a hypothetical approach: How do married people usually sleep? he asks her. Montse tells him to forget it and reminds J-L that he's not a monster like Pedro Medina.
"Not yet," he corrects her.
Her response to this is to say she's going to sleep with her son.
The next morning Gracie goes to visit Fabiola who announces proudly that, guess what, there's not a drop of alcohol in her blood today. It was tough--especially since Alejandro came to threaten her--but she managed to stay clean. Gracie takes a good whiff of her and seems satisfied. Gracie tells Fab they have things to do and orders Fab to come along.
Proclaiming her love as a mother is infinite |

I stand corrected, Gracie definitely still has the will but with the avances showing she tells Monse about her half sis, I just can't figure out what Gracie intends to do with it. Does she hope Monse and Fabs will come to an agreement of some sort? I'm intrigued.
One little thing I want to mention is that when Amelia gave Gracie the head jab she actually says: "Perdonate" because when the day comes that you will pay, "te va a faltar Jesus" you will need Jesus. Forgive me because it's not an exact translation but I thought it was a well crafted insult for Gracie so I had to mention it. Go Amelia!
Love to see that you mentioned the gum chewing Dim. Did anyone else notice? For those of you with military experience, does one really chew gun while holding a rifle during an operation?
The scene between Amelia/Gracie/and Fabs was just too over the top for me. Do they use a wet sponge to keep Gracie’s cheeks wet? I mean really, the tears come like waterfalls.
Most importantly, we now know that if Alejandro recuperates his name, Monse goes back to being his legitimate wife!!!!!
I am anxious to read all other comments.
Previews: I can’t believe MDJL and Maria kissing. Can’t wait to watch tomorrow night.
Thanks so much for this absolutely fabulous recap despite your computer troubles and your work this recap rocks!
I'm not buying what Gracie is selling. I think that whole little scene was to humiliate Amelia as much as she could. I'm glad Amelia gave it back to her. Gracie is horrid, just horrid for saying Dios gave Amelia a child with a terminal illness, how low will Gracie go? I also really felt for Fabs, I wish she would remember what Ale told her yesterday, that Gracie has a habit of betraying those she claims to love.
Addled, who knew? I didn't expect that at all! I don't know if Peddy is dead or not. That bullet was a through and through, and there wasn't much blood. I'm hoping Peddy is dead, but with these writers, who knows.
I am liking the Admiral, he too was in the lead with his men and this is how I like to see JL doing his job. I don't think Dimi should have been allowed back so soon. It is too soon for him, and I don't want him to make a mistake. I'm glad the Admiral told him to shelve the personal feelings, but I think this will be hard for Dimi.
Thanks again Julia for this most fab recap : )
Yes, they can chew gum during an op. It happens especially if the military member is a smoker, they are chewing Nicorette, it calms the nerves I hear.
Jls obsession with Monse wont lead him nowhere, his "Not Yet" gave me the chills.
Graciela ugh i have no words for her,i didnt like how she cursed Amelia in the name of Angelica thats the worst manner on how to insult a person, glad Amelia returned her back with her own Te Hase Falta Jesus!
And i loved the Gracie and Fabiola scene ,i was actually laughing trough it,i liked it more then the scene in TDA when Victoria says to Maria that she is her mother and her co-suegra! Who is a better crier,Victoria Ruffo or Daniela Castro? Im actually not annoyed by Gracies tear making then i am more with Victoria Ruffos,it sounds so forced but Castro makes it more natural.
One -day sober Fabiola ,that got me hard!
thanks for the clarification re the gum chewing but I don't see how one can hold a gun steady with their jaw chomping away. I have TMJ and my jaw never rests.
CountxAlacran:
I think Lucero cries the worst of all the actresses.
I had to laugh out loud at the part where Montse was saying Ale was her true love. The closed captions read: "Ali Handwrote. Ali Handwrote". I also got a good laugh at Fabiola's red wine mustache. Anyone else notice that?
The scene between Fabs and Gracie went on waayy too long. I clearly don't care for either of them because I got bored.
Pedro grabbed his shoulder when Adolfo shot him. He's not dead. Adolfo should have checked or shot him again just to make sure.
Lucero is the WORST at crying! Haha! You reminded me that all I complained about in Manana es Para Siempre and Soy tu Duena, is that she was just the worst at crying! Ruffo is right behind her!
I'd like to include that Dimitrio wasn't a good crier either. After the funeral, at his place, as he was tearing it apart, they showed his face at one point, I didn't see any tears. The agony was good but his face looked dry.
And my favorite cry: Sebastian Rulli. Homeboy knows how to let the flood gates open. 'Nuff Said.
Thanks!
Sebastian Rulli has such gorgeous eyes I could look at them all day. And yes, I think he really does act wonderfully. I love him, Fernando Colunga, and Eduardo Yanez. Give me those three anyday!
Thanks so much for the awesome recap. I really appreciate it especially with your computer troubles.
Sorry folks, but I could not buy any of Gracie's tears. All that crying was a show for Fabby. She tried to put all the blame on Amelia. But like Amelia told her, Gracie did not want her child. Once Gracie realized that her being preggers would not tie Benny down, she was determined to marry Lauro, and that meant she could not have a child. She needed to be 'clean & pure' for Lauro Mendoza to marry her. No matter how many tears Gracie sheds, I always remember the horrific things she has done to Montse & Dimi and refuse to feel sorry for her. I was happy that Amelia told Gracie that she was a bad mother because she is. I started laughing when Gracie was telling Fabby how a mother's love is all good and forgiving. Que? And you Gracie are the exact opposite. You don't forgive anyone but yourself. Gracie is only turning to Fabby because Montse and Dimi want Gracie out of their lives. NEXT!
I don't think that Peddy's dead. When Addie shot him, I started yelling at the TV, "shoot him again, he's not gonna die with that shot!" Of course, I also thought that Addie shooting him was too easy. Peddy needs to really suffer and be humiliated. His anvil needs to be slow and painful. So now we have to worry about Peddy roaming the streets of Aguazul. I don't doubt that he paid off a doctor to treat his wound.
I worry now that BM is getting out of jail. She always causes major problems. I just don't know what she's going to do next. I wonder, who was first on her hit list?
More later. Must sleep.
Off to bed...hasta pronto!
I totally agree about Rulli's eyes. They are gorgeous, along with everything else on him.
Loved the link to all the pics of Graciela snarling and weeping as well. There weren't any spoilers there that I could see.
Even though I am notoriously soft-hearted, I did not feel moved during the interminable Graciela/Fabiola hug/moan fest last night.
For one thing, I was distracted by Graciela's horrid outfit. It was by far the worst...the most tastless...I have ever seen. I figured this was the wardrobe people's choice to underline that our Gracie is still a cheap, manipulative schemer. Not a mother struggling with immense grief.
But Daniela Castro can sure bring it. And I also thought the actor playing Adolfo did his turn very well again.
Just an superb recap, done under difficult circumstances Julia. Thank you.
Pedro can't be dead. To a previous comment, Adolfo should have made sure. He should have shot him through the head for good measure. If this novela is teaching us anything, it's that unless there is an actual dead body, that person is alive.
Fabiola would be an utter fool to believe anything Gracie said to her. Gracie loves only money. She should have married Auric Goldgfinger.
Nothing will convince me that Gracie loves any of her children. They have only ever been a means to an end for her. And look at how she's re-writing history. Amelia didn't rip the "dead" baby from her arms; Macario brought a sick baby to her and she did the best possible thing.
Narcissistic mothers are particularly bad for daughters. Picture Monserrat at three or four: She would have been a pretty little girl with big blue eyes, blond hair, and wearing the best frilly dresses Gracie could find. A pretty doll to serve as a prop. Then picture her at five when she learns to say "no" and develops a personality. That's the point at which a narcissistic mother's children become useless to her.
It happened to me and several of my friends.
Thanks all! Now I have images of the Lucero and Ruffo crying scenes running thru my head. The horror (or giggles). Must. Not. Remember.
So count me among those who were like Ho-hum on the pity for Graceless. In fact, that whole mother-daughter reunion went on far too long for me. Just can't conjure the pity for either of those two, though I think we are supposed to "feel" for Fabs. Just had nothing.
As for Pedro, yeah Adolfo was a little too cocky there. For an assassin, he sure didn't do the required follow through. So pretty, but not always the brightest thinker. The shot definitely went into the lower shoulder area which means Pedro is most likely alive to shoot another day (maybe the one time he will actually kill someone himself).
With Pedro supposedly out of commission, I will be curious at Adolfo's next actions. Will he try to take over operations or use this as a means to finally walk away from his criminal life? If he doesn't walk away and still moves forward with Fina, he's a jerk. For all his bluster then, he would still be putting those he loves in danger. I still think he's a dead man walking anyway: he has two definite targets on his back now. Friend and foe alike now. And there is always Maria too.
I agree, the gum chewing isn't unusual. I had a friend who was a long-time police officer who worked a tough neighborhood and he use to do it all the time. He use to be a "smacker" with the gum which drove me nuts and that's why I asked why the heck he was always chewing it. Said a lot of the guys did it and it helped calm their nerves. Didn't think military would be allowed though, but I guess it's used there too.
Trying not to think about those previews...but honestly. Maria and JL? That better be one of those misleading previews, like he just does it to shut her up or something bizarre like that. If those two...
Daisynjay
"Montserrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrat! (Really crying about Fabs)" and " Graciela has come to call on Amelia with one-day-of-sobriety Fabiola in tow" were among my many favorites.
The cruel, vitrolic words hurled back and forth between Graciela and Amelia were beyond upsetting. "Gracie tells Amelia that God gave Amelia a dying daughter to punish her for what she did to Gracie" was heartless. Utterly.
I did not feel for Graciela or Fabiola at all either. While I believe she does love her children somewhat (in a way unfathomable to most of us), the wailing just was too much. I thought I should feel sympathy for Fab, but the character seems to possess no redeeming virtues, therefore, I felt nothing.
What was more startling than Adolfo being the one to shoot Pedro?? The fact he shot him in the shoulder. Gad, what was he thinking? Xint, I also couldn’t believe he didn’t shoot him again!! Pedro is not dead. Far from it. The only question now is what hidey hole will he crawl into? The only person who (he thinks) would ever consider helping him is Amelia.
Poor deluded Adolfo now believes Nadia and Fina are safe. How wrong he is. I am dreading what lies in store.
I was transfixed by the JL/Maria kiss in the previews! I cannot wait to see what happens there. My initial thought is that Maria initiated it and that JL will quickly end it. Guess we will have to wait and see.
Diana
I was extremely disappointed in Adolfo's shooting of Pedro. There is a reason people are shot "execution style" (as he did Mónica) so that they do not live to talk about it. So we know Adolfo is capable of it but never bothered to shoot Pedro in the head just to make sure he was dead?? The alacrán needs some guidance. No body so we have crazy Pedro on the loose some where. That is my guess. If they were not ready to kill off the character, they should not have shot him.
Daniela Castro has been outstanding in her role. How long has she been crying now? So much and she is so good at it, I do not think I can stand to hear her wail and bawl one more time. She has made Graciela insufferable at this point. I may have to turn down the sound if it goes on and on again.
Amelia never should have let Graciela in. No peepholes at her house either. Why do the good guys allow themselves to be manhandled by the baddies? When Graciela grabbed Amelia's face, why did not Amelia retaliate with a good punch or a slap? It only got worse with the hair pulling, etc. Nothing noble by allowing yourself to be another person's punching bag.
Poor Montse and Dimitrio with goofy drunk Fabiola as their half sister.
Anyway, it all was entertaining.
Jarifa
Someone beat me to the comment about Gracie's dress. Hideous. Declasse and worse. Fabiola's hair is a flyaway mullet. Hideous on both grounds.
Adolfo really bungled this one. I'll bet EZ will get on his case for it when he finds out.
Agree that Pedro is not dead. My first thought after Adolfo shot him was why he aimed for the shoulder? That's where the bullet hit, so I was even more surprised to see Pedro down and out (but not down for the count).
What was/is Adolfo thinking here?
Graciela looked and sounded hideous. I could not believe that outfit, but it was WAAAY too much listening to her cry and lie. It seeme do me that a) Amelia didn't speak loud enough when she told Graciela that she didn't want the child and b) that Fabiola did not hear that part.
Did I feel anything for Graciela and/or Fabiola? NO. Absolutely not. This is just more of Graciela's hideous, manipulative games.
Mad Dog JL looked particularly scruffy and dirty when he told Montse to move over his place on the bed. Just how dumb is this guy, anyway?! Honestly, I thought he looked physically dirty. I don't understand why he thinks that doing things like this is going to change things. Perhaps, he knows that they won't change things, but he figures he'll make Montserrat's life miserable until she leaves him because he knows deep down in his heart she is lost forever.
As for Macario, this guy deserves a slap in the face for all of his chismes. Why didn't he just come out and tell Alejandro the same thing he told Montserrat? This guy will never learn.
Agree that the avances of Mad Dog kissing BM were deceiving. I didn't believe it, so we'll just have to wait and see.
I was thinking another thought about Carlota. I don't think she will be so upset once she learns about EZ. In the scene the other night when she was rude to Adolfo, she walked away in a huff, but just as Adolfo threw out that little charming statement about her having lost weight, she came back with "mi chulo". Right. I figure the good Admiral Robledo will turn her head with just a few words. I am no longer worried about Carlota.
Thank you, Julia!
Fatima
They made a pretty big point of showing the view where that bullet was pulled out of the tile.
I predict that all of a sudden, we will have NCIS type ballistics appear (when it has NEVER appeared before) and identify that bullet as Adolfo's.
This will then be deemed to be the same kind of bullet as the one that killed Monica which will show all of these people that Pedro is not El Alacran.
Fatima
Sorry, my thoughts were going faster than my fingers. I haven't been making myself clear of late. :)
Fatima
I was a little surprised at how quickly she caved to Adolfo's charms. She clearly did not want him there, but all it took was the right sweet compliment and POOF!
You are correct. She is going to be stunned, angry, and upset. I just don't think it will bring her life down like I once thought it might.
Fatima
I just read your comment from yesterday. I am so very glad you are with us today and okay and for sharing this personal experience.
Does Graciela think that Montserrat is going to jump for joy and hug Fabiola as her long lost sister?
This should make for a very interesting situation when the "confrontation" does happen.
Fatima

I got to thinking after Gracie told Fabs, yes I am your Mama, that this is quite ironic. Not only is Fabs Monse's half sister , Fabs is also Ale's half sister, being as Benny is the Papa.

I especially appreciated the recap be amuse I was not able to watch last night.
The screen caps prove that Diana Castro is not afraid to look unattractive on screen. Her snarling , distorted face is downright ugly. I agree that Amelia should have given her much more than a head poke. Gracie said awful things to Amelia. What a terrible thing to say to a mother who has lost a child. Gracie truly has a stone cold heart of darkness. I pity her.
I worry about where and when Undead Ped will eventually show up. I agree that Adolfo is not a very good assasin.
Of course Pedro is alive. No villain of that caliber dies before the final episodes!
Put me down as seeing Graciela's crying for what it is, a histrionic outburst by a selfish narcissist. Ugh, I felt it would take a truckload of Zofran to get through that scene so I fast-forwarded it.
I watched Soy Tu Duena, can't remember what Lucero cried like, can remember Mr. Colunga, though. I saw one scene with Ruffo crying in a TN a while back and stopped watching that TN-couldn't do that for months.
Can't wait to see what will happen with Maria and mad dog JL.
I agree with all those that think Pedro will live to see another day. When Adolfo, our "expert hitman" shot him, I was left waiting for the next shot and was disappointed when he walked off. I was like "what the heck Adolfo?!" Every time we have seen him shoot a gun, he has shot to kill (ie: the "traitor" drug dealer, the pimp and Monica) and all he does to Pedro is shoot him in the shoulder? I almost started laughing as Pedro grabbed his shoulder and then it looked like Pedro paused for a moment and decided to let himself fall to the floor and play dead! Now everyone is going to walk around Aguazul with a false sense of security.
"Graciela has come to call on Amelia with one-day-of-sobriety Fabiola in tow"---great one Julia! Also I loved how Graciela sniffed Fab's mouth before they headed off to make sure she hadn't drank anything. This was one tough scene to watch, and I'm glad Amelia stood up for herself, and gave Graciela her own verbal smackdown. Lily, you are right "when Amelia gave Gracie the head jab she actually says: "Perdonate" because when the day comes that you will pay, "te va a faltar Jesus" you will need Jesus".
As for the Fabs/Gracie scene, maybe I'm pretty sensitive, but I did feel bad for Fabs, because if she had a real loving family growing up she may have turned out quite differently. She had the opportunity with Anastasia but they died too soon, and Ben did just abandon her as a little girl. I thought that was a powerful scene, almost of a little girl finally thinking she is going to get the love she wants and giving in to her mother's arms. Guess with Gracie, we will have to wait and see what happens.
Maricruz
And Fatima, great investigative thinking about the bullet that hit the ground. I didn't think about that until you mentioned it!
Maricruz
I would like to clarify one thing that came up back a few episodes ago. When anita shared her marital strife with us from 40 years ago, it was not I, Anita with the capital A.
I did have my own tribulations with a husband who was mentally troubled and on the slippery slope to abuse, having already used verbal and then began with the physical and the threats. Fortunately, I had two loving and supportive parents, friends and work colleagues who helped me get through this.
The damaged ones were my two children, but especially my daughter, she was only five when her world came crashing down on her. It has taken her over 40 years to realize that everything that happened wasn't her fault. After many years of separation, we have reconciled and have forgiven each other and have formed a very tight bond. I'm glad I didn't give up.
Anita in MD
Pedro was only shot in the shoulder, he will be just fine in a little while. If you are going to kill someone, you don't put one bullet in the shoulder or---- maybe you do in novelas.
When I saw Gracie's outfit I had to look twice because I couldn't believe what I just saw. Fire the Wardrobe crew I say.
criers---I can't stand either Daniela Castro or Victoria Ruffo's
crying. They both have low voices
which makes their crying sound even worse.
How many guards does a governor have? Adolfo sent them away. QUE?
And shouldn't a governor be at the state capitol going about the
state's business?
the gringo
Does anyone know what Adolfo was trying to find when he was looking through those documents in Pedro's office? I'm assuming it was the will, right?
Happy 4th everyone in the States who is celebrating and enjoy the long weekend!
Best and thanks again,
Julia R.
I loved the way they were posed, almost back-to-back, as if they were in a duel.
Amelia is one tough chica, taking Graciela's best shots and coming back with her own haymakers.
Dimi seems so out of place in actual combat. When he carries a weapon he looks like he is in a paintball contest.
And what is the protocol now that Pedro is shot? Does Amelia still move in and clean up the bloodstains?
"The marina are preparing for Operation Get Creepy Pedro At Last!"
I think you may have caught the campiest episode so far, the one where some good actors hit their own particular level of incompetence and hilarity ensues.
Not Fernando Valencia (Adolfo) though. I loved the way he turned on a dime from smarmy flatterer ["You look thinner and prettier every time I see you"] to heartless mobster ["I know you're the rat!]; from would-be killer to clicking-his-heels-in-the-air-from-sheer-exuberance hero.
I was pretty sure I saw Pedro's eyes turned to the side as he lay on the floor. And from where I was sitting, I could hear everyone on the Patio screaming at Adolfo: SHOOT HIM IN THE HEAD! (OMG, what has become of us?)
Thank you so much for this fun read!
For those of you that live in OBX please be safe during this Hurricane Arthur set to bear down on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Here's a question for those who have an eye for detail: can someone trace the journey of the Will? I think it was stolen by Fabs but after that I cannot correctly place the history of who got it and how. The last theft was when Gracie stole it from Fabs but a lot of other hands touched it before that.
Fabiola brought the real will to Pedro, who put it in his safe.
Adolfo stole the will from Pedro's safe, then gave it to Maria.
Maria hid it in the Mendoza family chapel near the altar.
Sandro saw her with it one evening, then stole it.
Maria shot him in the living room of the Almonte beach house, then stole the will again.
I was wondering if Pedro will show up at Amelia’s. I fear there’s a Victoria kidnapping in the future.
I felt bad for Fab. She’s so desperate for a mother that she’s going to accept Gracie and Gracie will destroy her. Fab isn’t strong like her other children. I know she deserves some retribution, but I don’t believe she’s bad at heart—like Gracie, Peddy, EZ, etc.
I couldn’t believe what Gracie was wearing. She keeps dressing weirder and weirder.
xlntperuvian: I noticed the wine mustache, too. It looked like the kind you get when drinking grape juice, which I'm assuming that's what she's drinking.
Nanette
So, is there a shortage of lead in Mexico? How much could it have cost to put one more bullet into Pedro? And being that it was Pedro, perhaps a stake through the heart... just for good measure. Let's face it, Adolfo is an incompetent screw-up... although his clean-up crew did a great job on Fabiola's white sofa. I got a good look at it... pristine.
As for María, I think I was less troubled to learn that she had been a drug-addicted prostitute than by seeing her kissing on JL in the avances... Gaack!
Graciela's net skirt was functional... she won't be getting mosquito bites on her legs.
Julia R,
I think that Adolfo was just checking to see if there was anything in Pedro's office that might incriminate him. Graciela had told him that she turned the will over to the authorities.
Carlos
Jarifa
So glad Amelia didn't get cowed by Graciela. Count me in on feeling absolutamente nada for Graciela or Fabs. Fabs hasn't shown any kindness to anyone, not since Angélica and Ginny, and even then she had alterior motives.
I too am puzzled about Adolfo. Could it be he meant to maim, but not kill? Surely he didn't think Pedro would have all his incriminating files just laying around?
I appreciate Carlos' forgiving allowance that the weirdest of skirts is actually a mosquito tent for Gracie's lovely legs.
I just cannot watch Victoria Ruffo crying or not crying. Why is she so often cast in Mexico. Do they like her?? Hard to imagine.
I am probably going to scare Willa tonight if I scream or jump when creepy Pedro crawls back into the script. There is no way he is dead. I have been enjoying Adolfo's rather redeeming assassination attempts and always a sucker for those deepest blue eyes, but I don't see him being around to the end. Just guessing, no insider knowledge here... Maybe he will sacrifice himself to defend his sister and neice from the Frankenstein monster about to come in wearing Pedro's blood soaked suit..
It's the same disguise she wore 7 years previously when she tried to kill Monse.
Madelaine, amiga, I know! The irony of it all. Is Graciela foolish enough to think that Montse, Dim, and Alejandro are going to buy "Mi Bebe" story?!? Thank you, too, for the info on the "prove you're not a robot" bidnez. I have no problems with the numbers, but the mish mash of letters drives me crackers.
Urban, thank you for the link to that episode when Fabiola threw Montse and familia out! Somehow, I don't see Montserrat jumping for joy at the prospect of her new sister. OY.
Jarifa, Macario's loose lips never seem to function at the right time, do they?
Anita with a capital "A", I am so very, very happy for you that you and your daughter are a team. It would have been heartbreaking for you if that had not been the case. I am happy for you, amiga.
