Yo no Creo en los Hombres #55 Lunes 9/28/15

Chapter 55: Gaslight

Honoria and Fermin sat in the hospital waiting room all night. Doris had gone home to sleep. Maria Dolores and Max came to them in the morning with coffee. The doctor had bad news: Julian would never walk again and would need a wheelchair. Max asked whether there was anything that could be done. The doctor said “No.” A chorus of “Why Julian? Why?” came from Fermin and tears from Honoria. Fermin went on about his role in Julian's illness. He ran out. She then ordered Maria Dolores to stay away from her. She blamed her for this because Julian was always trying to come to her rescue.

Doris showed the website design to Esperanza and Clara on Ari's tablet. Esperanza asked Clara to call Maria Dolores to ask what was happening. She tried to maintain a sense of humor.

Max followed Fermin, who was trying to escape the hospital. He should have been with Honoria. He looked like he wanted to find the nearest bar.

Beatriz cleaned the guest bathroom and found Claudio's watch on the floor near the tub. She pocketed the watch as Leo called her name. He entered the bathroom and asked her about the day Alma's jewelry disappeared.

Maria Dolores stood in the hospital corridor in tears. Max returned, saying that Fermin was blaming his drinking for Julian's condition. Honoria thought that was right and was furious with Fermin. When Jenny tried to say something she stopped her. She said she hoped Fermin would never return. Max told her that Julian would need them more than ever in view of his injuries. Honoria told him “The only person who accepts Julian exactly as he is is me.” Both Jenny and Maria Dolores denied this. Honoria turned on Maria Dolores and ordered her to leave because “You're just as bad as Fermn. You're like a cancer in his life. All you do is ruin his life.” Maria Dolores was hurt. She told Honoria that she would not leave until she saw Julian.

Ivana talked to Max on the phone. She tried to find Maria Dolores so she could settle the issue of the stolen red dress. There was nothing from the security cameras. She seemed to be seeing reason about the accusations against Maria Dolores for the things Danny-Boy did. Gerry speculated that no thief would do anything in front of known security cameras. He did think that Ivana was giving too much attention to this. She explained she wanted to maintain contact with Max. Gerry brought up Danny-Boy and Ivana told him she was determined to recover everything she lost because of him. Gerry asked why she was helping Maria Dolores, who had also caused her suffering. She pointed out “You're always defending her” so she didn't get his attitude. She acknowledged that much of what Maria Dolores was accused of was done by Danny-Boy. Gerry agreed, but didn't think Maria Dolores was entirely innocent. This confused Ivana. He told her that if she persisted in this she would find herself alone.

Claudio was searching for his watch. Leo came to his door looking for Alma. Claudio told him she was with Isela. She had insisted on this to help her, to protect her. Leo knew Orlando's feelings for Isela: That if there was anyone who would give his life for Isela it was Orlando. He was not ready to believe he was a danger to her. Claudio said that he and Alma had witnessed his obsession. Leo said he would have to ask Orlando because at that moment he didn't trust his parents. Claudio said he didn't trust Leo. He would have to demonstrate that he was trustworthy. Leo told him that was his exact intention.

The doctor told Honoria that Julian needed to be told of his condition. They all needed to be sure he could handle this news. Honoria asked if she could see him and was given permission; Julian would be released that morning. Jenny followed her. Max told Maria Dolores he was going to a nearby store to buy a wheelchair. He asked her to come with him but she declined. She said she couldn't leave until she had seen Julian. She wanted to be sure he was alright. When she walked away from him her face said more. That she wanted to avoid talking to Max. He knew something was wrong.

Isela was sitting with Alma in the garden. Beatriz watched them from the balcony. Alma was in the dumps. She admitted that she and Claudio were having problems. That there was a distance between them. And between her and her sons. She started to talk about their wedding anniversary, but stopped. Isela asked “There wasn't any sex?” Alma looked discomfited.

Julian realized he could not move his legs. Honoria cried. Julian told her not to. He was determined to walk. He moved his legs by hand and slid them over the side of the bed. Jenny tried to stop him but couldn't. He tried to get up but collapsed onto the floor just as Maria Dolores arrived.

Isela went into the house.. Beatriz took advantage of this to approach Alma with the watch. Isela watched her. Beatriz told Alma where she had found the watch. Isela remembered Claudio removing his jacket and the watch in her bathroom. Alma thanked the maid and went inside.

Maleny arrived at the Bustamantes' front gate. Leo let her in as she talked about straightening things out with Alma. Isela had just finished telling Claudio about the watch as Alma entered the house. She took out the watch. Isela was about to bolt. Claudio looked like he had a bad case of acid indigestion. Maleny entered like a bat out of hell saying “You have no idea what's been going on at my place. Julian – that guy who's incapacitated – was there threatening Daniel last night because Daniel was shagging Maria Dolores.”
“What? That can't be,” said Leo.
“It's what he said during the fight. He fell down the stairs and went to the hospital.”
“How is Julian?” asked Isela.
“I think he was hurt,” Maleny said with no concern or emotion. “But let's talk about happier things; everything will be taken care of.”
“You lied,” Leo said. “You are going to admit in front of my parents that you put my mother's jewelry in Clara's bag.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You know perfectly well what I'm talking about, Maleny. And I have proof.”
“That's a joke in poor taste,” she said. She looked at Alma. “If you believe this – “
“No, Maleny,” she said. “We know nothing.”
“Who told you all this?” Claudio asked.
“Excuse me,” Isela said before she walked out.

Max entered the hospital ward with the wheelchair. The doctor said he would get help, but Max said it wasn't necessary. Maria Dolores almost shrank from Honoria's hateful stare. Max picked Julian up off the bed and put him in the new wheelchair. A moment later Honoria began pushing the chair and they left the hospital.

Leo pointed out the sequence of events.
“When Clara arrived you were not here. She wasn't alone for a minute. She couldn't have known where my mother's jewelry was.” The boy would make a good lawyer someday.
“And what about me, Leo?” asked Maleny.
“You know this house much better than she does,” he said.
Alma began protesting.
“Clara left her things here and came just to talk to you, Mother. Maleny was alone there all that time. It's a co-incidence that your jewelry ended up in Clara's bag, wasn't it? It's obvious, Mother. It's obvious that the only person who had the opportunity was her!” He pointed at Maleny.
“But why would I take that risk?” she asked.
“Because you have always hated them. Because you can't stand the idea of Max being with Maria Dolores!”
“Because she's a thief and the worst trash. She's always been out to get me.”
Leo lost control and grabbed her arms. “Of course you would say something like that” he yelled. Claudio and Alma separated them.
“Leo, stop! Control yourself!” Alma said.
“Mother, if you believe even a little of what she's saying you're being manipulated. If you believe her lies then say so!”
“The only one manipulating your mother is you,” Claudio said.
“That's not true, Dad.”
“Do you have any proof of what you're saying?”
“What, who?” asked Maleny.
“Not precisely who took the jewelry, but yes, Dad.”
“Are you saying the cleaning woman took them?”
“No. It wasn't her.”
“If you want the truth, look for it!”
“No, Dad, wait.”
Alma left the room. Maleny sat on the couch and wrung her hands. Finally she prayed to Satan to protect her.

Isela called Hosefa from her cell, telling her she had left the mansion. The servant had found them out when she retrieved Claudio's watch from the guest bathroom floor.

Are you going to judge her?”
“I don't care how you judge Maleny. Just how you see your mother and me,” Claudio said. Alma came back with the maid.
“Here she is,” she said. The maid looked frightened. Maleny got up.
“Therefore you are the one accusing me of stealing the jewelry and putting it in Clara's bag?” Maleny asked her to her face.
“I didn't say that,” Beatriz replied. “Only that you arrived and you were alone in the living room. You didn't go out to see the Señora in the garden.”
“Well, the Señora was having a private conversation with Clara and I wanted to be discreet. I went out afterwards. But you were also there alone.” Alma stared at the maid, who realized she was being set up.
“But why would I do anything like that?” she asked.
“I don't know why she would rob you,” Maleny said.
“Now she's manipulating things in her favor, Mother,” Leo said.
“We aren't going to lose anything by talking about it,” Claudio said. “I'm going to look for my watch in my room.”
“She was the one who found your watch. She found it in Isela's room,” Alma said.
Claudio managed to keep his poker face. Maleny looked like she would lose hers.

Susanna asked Ivana if Gerry had left. When Ivana asked why she asked whether Ivana planned to return Danny-Boy's engagement ring. Ivana calmly answered that if and when the time came she would have the chauffeur deliver it. She hadn't decided yet. Susanna said something about it being decorative. Ivana said, “You know what? You're right. I'm going to donate it to the company's foundation.”
“Why not to an orphanage?”
“Why?”
“Well, if you want to cleanse your conscience because you can't have children, why not help ones that need it? There are lots of babies without mothers. If you like I can find a good organization.” Ivana left the room without answering.

Therefore you're saying I'm a thief.”
“I didn't say that.”
“But you're saying there were two people in the house who could have put the jewelry in Clara's bag. Coincidentally the Señor's watch disappeared and it appeared in Isela's room? These situations have two things in common. You!” Maleny pointed at the maid.
“But I've done nothing, I swear,” said Beatriz.
“Maleny is right. Isela and she demonstrated they can be trusted.”
Alma was snowed twice over. And in sunny Mexico no less.
“Pack your things,” Claudio said to the maid, “and return what doesn't belong to you.”
Beatriz left the room.
“You owe an apology,” Claudio said to Leo. “Not just to Maleny but to us.”
“Alright. But I won't stop exposing the lies being told about Maria Dolores.”
Both left the room. Alma took Maleny's hands in hers. Maleny laid her head on Alma's shoulder. She had gotten away with one more lie that destroyed another life. A life whose existence she did not recognize.

A drunken guitarist stumbled into a backstreet cantina called La Xochitl. He announced he would sing a song about an ungrateful woman. Fermin was sitting at a table. The barkeep threw the guitarist out as Fermin told the others at the table that Julian was a great accountant. Fermin was drunk. He mentioned the law office and its important clients. The nice office Julian worked in. No one seemed interested at first, then they started laughing.

Clara came into the courtyard from the street. She told her mother that Julian was back. Esperanza and Doris stopped watering the plants to join her.

One of the men in the bar started making fun of Fermin. Fermin got up and broke a glass on the man's head, then stumbled out. The other man stumbled out a few seconds later and began to follow him.

Honoria helped Julian out of Max's car while Max took the wheelchair out of the trunk. Orlando and Ari arrived, saying Doris had called them.
“It's good you're back because we were all worried about you,” Esperanza said. The men lifted the chair over a step. Honoria started to push it but Julian stopped her. “I can do this,” he said. He started moving the wheels but one got caught on broken pavement. Orlando and Max moved the chair so he could continue. The vulture Hosefa watched from her favorite low branch. Esperanza and Honoria led them to the stairs. Orlando, Ari, and Max carried the chair as they talked about fixing the stairs. Clara and Doris watched with concern. Many stares were exchanged. Hosefa looked ready to smirk.

Fermin tried to stumble his way home, only the liquor store was in his way. He saw the tequila display in the window and went inside. While the clerk was getting him a bottle he checked his wallet. It was empty. He took the bottle from the counter and ran.

Alma was completely taken in by Maleny's victim act. They sat on the couch.
“Poor you. Leo tried to accuse you based on deception, but –“
“No, I have responsibility in this. I told you to accuse her of stealing your jewelry so you would force Maria Dolores away from your sons. You almost made that happen.”
“Forgive me; I was desperate,” Alma said. “We've never had problems with our sons.”
“Well, Alma, it's clear about the robbery. If you want to think I manipulated you to thinking bad of them, say so. It's not important what Max thinks of me.”
“No, I have to take my responsibility for this.” Another maid came in with a glass of water for Maleny. “Only Isela's things are in the guest room.”
“Isela is staying here?”
“Yes,” said Alma. “And where is she now?”
“I don't know,” Claudio said. “I'm calling her cell but she doesn't answer. I'll try again.” He tried again and walked away.
“What's happening?” asked Maleny. “If you know.”
“Isela was staying with us for a few days because we were helping her. Her boyfriend Orlando was stalking her. He probably raped her.”
“It was him?”
“I don't know. I asked her but she denied it. But I'm sure it was him.”
Maleny looked relieved.

Orlando and Ari were talking about Julian, saying he needed therapy. Adri said it would take more than that because of Julian's illness. Ari told Orlando what Doris had told him of the incident. Somehow he seemed convinced that Maria Dolores had a thing with Julian before Max entered the picture. He compared this with Orlando's situation with Isela and Claudio. As if by magic or a curse Isela appeared in front of them. She stared at Orlando with zombie eyes.
“Orlando, how are you?” she asked. He ignored her question and walked past her.
“Orlando, where are you – “
Ari stepped in front of her and into her line of sight. He motioned for her to stay put.
“Orlando can't be near you,” he said. “Because of what you did. He doesn't want any more trouble. You're not worth it because of what you're doing to Claudio Bustamante's wife.” He then went to catch up with Orlando. Isela stood staring after him.

Max was at the Morales apartment. Esperanza knew none of this was her fault. She said Honoria was always disappointed that Maria Dolores didn't fall in love with Julian. Clara said they all knew that sooner or later Julian would end up in the wheelchair. Maria Dolores was upset because that happened too soon. It was because of the fight with Danny-Boy. Doris pointed out that this was Julian's decision and he hadn't regretted it. Clara wanted to help. Maria Dolores was sure Honoria would reject any help from them. Max said they should approach Julian himself. Then he wondered whether Fermin had returned. Esperanza said she hoped he hadn't fallen off the wagon.

Isela tried to make Hosefa understand she had to leave the Bustamantes' mansion. Hosefa would not listen and began her usual round of insults. She went on about a missing watch meaning nothing. She threatened to go over there to give them a piece of her mind. Isela took the bait and checked her cell. There were numerous missed calls from Claudio. She called him and told him she was afraid Alma had found out about them. He told her to come back because all was in order.

Max tried to reassure Maria Dolores that this was not her fault. He knew how Julian felt about her and that he had decided to go after Danny-Boy. She tried to go back inside but he pleaded with her not to leave him out. She embraced him without hesitation and tried not to cry.

Julian sat in his room staring at the wall. Honoria led Jenny out and closed the door behind them. Jenny told her she was going to look for Fermin because Julian would need his help. Honoria didn't want her to and told her to leave. Jenny told her off. Now was no time to isolate Julian. She told her that Fermin's drinking had nothing to do with Julian's medical issues. It was genetic and could have come from her, his mother. She left Honoria to stew.

Leo wanted to see Julian but Max told him not to. Now was not the time. He had called him to get him to help look for Fermin. Jenny appeared and went with them to begin the search, starting with the local bars. Maria Dolores stayed behind.

Maleny was leaving the Bustamante mansion just as Isela returned. She couldn't resist taunting her about Orlando having raped her. “But you and I know that not likely. What's more likely is that you're boinking Claudio.” She looked back for a second and stared at Isela again. “If not, how did a maid find his watch in your bathroom? Well, things have changed in Clara's favor because he's exonerated her and fired the cleaning woman.”
“Well, then it suits us both,” Isela said. “You know perfectly well that Clara is incapable of stealing from anyone. Excuse me.”
She walked inside. Maleny looked like she had lost but didn't know why.

Alma was wondering whether Isela had stolen the watch. Claudio said he would straighten this out. Isela entered just in time to hear this. They asked where she went and she said she had been in the hood. Alma reminded her that this wasn't safe. She answered that she was worried about Julian. “Unfortunately, he's become paralyzed.”

It was dark. Fermin had drunk most of the stolen bottle as he stumbled around the shantytown. He was blaming himself for everything that had ever happened to Julian.

Isela told Hosefa that the issue had been resolved and the maid fired. Hosefa seemed ready to laugh until Isela said that the sons were going to reconcile with the sisters. Now Hosefa ordered Isela to tell them that Maria Dolores had been shagging Julian and that's why he's paralyzed now. Isela pointed out that this would not be that easy. They had never been a couple but that didn't stop the poison Hosefa was still spitting. Isela told her that the only thing she was concerned about was Maleny because she knew about her involvement with Claudio.

Fermin stumbled toward a large fire in some ruins and passed out near it.

Padre Juan visited Honoria. He said he missed her at services and she should come back. Leave Julian alone for a while to adjust and work things out. He had faith in Julian's ability to adjust. “He has a will of iron!” he said. Honoria was not so certain. Julian was sad, possibly depressed. The priest got up but Honoria said she had to talk to him. He sat down and she said she thought God was punishing her. She had blamed Fermin all those years for Julian's condition but that she was responsible. Neither saw Julian in the next room. They could not have known that he overheard them.

Maria Dolores was standing on the street just outside the enclosure when Danny-Boy sneaked up from behind her.

“You know you and I have to talk,” he said. “I know you want to get back together, my love.” He embraced her. He looked desperate. She froze. A cold anger grew in her eyes.

Wow, that was an excellent recap Urban!

I hated what was done to poor Beatriz, that was so vile. And I even got more upset with Claudio than Maleny in that scene. Maleny is so unhinged but he can be so cold.

Jarocha

Urban- You did this sad and frustrating episode justice. Thank you.

Jarocha- I agree with you about Beatriz and Claudio. Mal knows and acknowledges exactly why she threw the poor maid under the bus. But Claudio thinks of himself as this just and fair person, and yet he just did this to this poor woman to save his hide. But he'll never admit to that. He's such a hypocrite.

The whole Julian storyline makes me cry. Especially when he got back to the vecinidad where even getting over the threshold where you need to make a step down, then the broken pavement, and then the stairs to get into his home. It was immediately apparent how limited his life would be. I hope Max gets some ramps installed asap.

Thanks.

What we all need to keep in mind about the Santibanez is that people without money or social position aren't even human to them. They exist solely to serve them in whatever way they can think of. They go a step further and see Ivana as a cash cow -- even referring to her as such -- because she is not thin or beautiful. Maria Dolores is no more to Daniel than a blow-up doll with actual ovaries and a uterus.

I hope she doesn't end up pregnant, but I don't see it going any other way.

Urban- That's exactly the point. We don't expect any more or anything different than what Mal did to the maid. It was only Claudio's behavior that was shocking/disappointing. He and Alma say their sons are the most important to them, and they did a great job raising these two good/moral men. But with every thing they do, they push their sons away. Leo was beyond disgusted by what they did to the maid, and how they continued to believe Mal's lies.

Great recapitulation UA.

"Claudio managed to keep his poker face. Maleny looked like she would lose hers"

Well, Dan still wants MD accused of burning her own shop.

I hate that smug faced Claudio, how convenient to clean up his little mess and demand an apology from Leo. An opportunity missed by Leo however, to demand an apology from his mother and father, their accusation of Clara. Shame it is on the back of a throwaway Beatriz.

MD has been standoffish with Max since the deal with Alma to protect Clara and since the rape, understandably more so, but since Clara is ostensibly cleared, how will MD keep him at arms length? It's uncomfortable watching MD trying not to be alone with Max or have any physical contact and Max still ignorantly hopeful.

Isela that cockroach sure scurried for a dark corner.

As distressing as Julian's return the scene was so well done.

MD can choose not to tell Max about her rape, but it bothered me a little when Max assumed Julian went to see Dan for the same reason he did, the promissory notes, and MD gave a tentative affirmation.

MD called Dan, I hope it's to chew his ass about Julian.

The Bustamante brothers must be feeling horrible now because of their parents' gullibility. Max doesn't even know the half of it yet but Leo will not keep it from him.

What bothers me even more is that Maria Dolores is keeping everything in. She's not telling Max about the rape. I understand shame and the feeling of helplessness that can cause it, but Danny-Boy isn't going to stop. He will harass her until he kills her when he doesn't gey what he says he wants.

He was able to hurt Julian (I don't think that was an accident) but Max could beat the crap out of him. He deserves that.

Hell no Dan won't stop. He's still got the arson card too. Is Dan using that to force MD to resume their relationship or if she is pregnant as leverage to give up the child. I assume with what Dan has done to her so far having her imprisoned is not a stretch.

Not to mention that if she's in prison he can take the hypothetical baby away with impunity if it's his. This is about as dark as it gets.

The arson is still under investigation. MD was not there when the fire started. She doesn't own a car and so would not have had the gas needed to start the fire. She also doesn't own the insurance policy on that property.

If Max's emotional attachment to MD was not an issue she could ask for his legal assistance and be completely honest about what Dan has done. Dan could spin things however he wanted but Max could knock it down. I do wish MD trusted her mother and Max's ability to handle full disclosure but Esperanza withheld the mugging at knife point from MD and Clara so guess that is where MD gets the behavior.

Thanks UA, great thorough job as usual. Tuesday mornings are such a treat with you work.

Alma has got to realize that thieves don't return to you what they just stole before you ask them about it. Come on lady, you're not that dumb, you just don't want to see it.

Cathy, you are dead right on that.

While we have no info on it, I'm willing to bet that Alma inherited that mansion, so she comes from privilege. Now she is defaulting to the attitudes and prejudices that go with that territory. She can't -- or won't -- see that Maleny is unhinged. She thinks she sees a garden-variety neurotic, although I can't understand why she would think even that is acceptable. Why would she ever want anyone like that to be the mother of her grandchildren?

Claudio should know better. He knows about the non-suicide of Hector Santibanez. Why he still associates with Mama Bear and her cubs is beyond my understanding. They must have some dirt on him.

Claudio cannot allow the poor to have any redeeming quality nor admit any well heeled have flaws for that challenges his patriarchal feudalistic caste system.

I don't see that. I think he's hostage to an ugly secret. I'm also sure he has handed down judgments based on circumstantial evidence (which apparently are the majority of cases here in the US as well).

Someone said yesterday that he may have convicted Isela's "sister." If so why didn't he realize that upon hearing her name or Hosefa's?

Thank you Urban, I stayed up to read last night but too sleepy to comment. I try to phrase my comments to where they make sense so they wont get deleted, so I keep it simple. Your writing is intriguing and cant stop reading once I start. I appreciate everyones recap, because of time they invest to keep us informed. As for Alma, I would respect her more if she was "stupid" but she deliberately doesnt want to see. I will not feel too sorry for her when she finds out about her husband and Isela. Claudio is first class pompous bastard. Some things just cant be phrased any other way.

Urban, this is a good recap to a exasperating episode. The lies just keepa comin. Alma is
Such a stupid woman. "We've never had problems with our sons".. you still don't stupid, your problem is with that lying snake sittin next to you.
Out of all the dumb people on this show, alma Is the dumbest. The ho-heffa ain't got
Nothin on her. We know shes a dingbat, but
Alma, living in her fine house riding around in her fancy car eating her fancy food and wearing her nice clothes she's blind and dumb. It might take her awhile to figure out the watch in the guest bathroom and a sleeping pill. poor stupid woman I do not feel sorry for her, I would if she didn't so blatantly go along with the lies that malney has been spinning and all those other upper crust lying people. Her anvil is going to be a shocking one. Cause she so willingly believed the lies.

She's known Maleny for all or most of her life, or at least that's the impression we got a while back. How could she not have seen a major change happen around the time of Hector's death?

There was a country song a long time ago called "Behind Closed Doors". I'm sure the Bustamantes don't know even a tenth of what goes on in the Santibanez household.

Than you so much for the recap, UA!

Why is Honoria so sure that she passed the MD gene onto her son and not Fermin? It could just as easily have been him. Also, I understand that these people are not well educated and supposedly didn't really understand or know what disease Julian has but how can Fermin or anyone for that matter actually believe that his alcoholism somehow magically transformed into a baby being born with a muscular/bone disease...he clearly doesn't have a mental handicap, just physical. It really makes no sense.

While I am not overly empathetic towards Alma, I have no ill will towards her and hope she has a happy ending. I think we saw the true Alma when she was first introduced to Clara - she didn't care that she came from a lower class neighborhood known for violence or that her rich, privileged son wanted to date her, she judged her for her character only and embraced her. Unfortunately, Alma is surrounded by a bunch of manipulative, cold, deceptive people who spin lies as easily as they breathe and she buys them every single time - that makes her gullible, nothing more. In a TN where there are always multiple versions of stories going around concocted by desperate people to cover bad acts and lies, Alma, herself, has never really spun anything, she's always told the truth, or the truth as she sees it. We haven't seen her actively try to hurt anyone or make someone seem evil for personal gain like the majority of these sorry souls..she's just easily manipulated and persuaded by others she trusts.

I am newer to TNs so I am not sure but is it TN rule that if a couple has a theme song that they will end up together? I ask because Isela/Orlando have a theme song which worries me because I feel like Isela finding out that Josefa is not really her Mother, that she has been manipulated into a revenge plot by her all these years and I assume the death of Josefa (just a guess - may not happen) will somehow be her anvil and that in the end, the couple will end up together and happy. I can only speak for myself but the fact that Josefa has manipulated Isela and brainwashed her may have been enough for me to excuse her actions earlier on, but certainly not now and I genuinely dislike this character. She's her own person now and actively stabbing being who have been nothing but loyal to her in the back and acting on her own accord rather than just following Josefa's orders. I would hate it if Isela ended up with Orlando after what she has done to him and all the head games she has played with him and the trouble she has gotten him into as if the fact that she has a horrible influence in her life (Josefa) excuses all her actions. I fear this will be the case. Can a TN vet enlighten me.. is the fact that they have their own song a given it will be Isela + Orlando in the end?

Urban, terrific recap.

For an instant, I thought I saw a look of compassion on Josefa's face when she saw Julian in the wheelchair. Maybe she was reminded of something from her past regarding her daughter?

Alma must be in denial. Better to believe that the maid is a thief even though she volunteered the watch and that it makes no sense that she would put jewelry in Clara's bag, rather than believe that Claudio was getting it on in Isela's room. Oh, and didn't Isela inquiry whether Alma and Claudio had sex on their anniversary? Yep, employees always ask the boss's spouse about their sex life. Poor Alma.

Claudio has certainly failed the integrity test. He could at least feel bad about kicking out an innocent maid, but nope.

It's a beanie moment for me that Ivana would want a Dan baby since she knows what crud he is, but I guess she's all about hurting MD now.

Which I have trouble understanding. MD never did anything to her. She should have been thanking her for bringing the Jacinto situation to light so she could get rid of him. Once she knew Danny-Boy had stolen the dress she should have apologised to MD, gotten her back in the salon, and given Danny-Boy the heave-ho.

However, the writers seem to be pushing her in the direction of psycho baby-napper because she cannot have children of her own. I just hope we don't have a long wait to finding out whether MD is pregnant now.

As for a compassionate look on Hosefa's face, I have my doubts. She's still looking for dirt on him and MD that she can use against MD and her family.

UA--Finished your stellar recap. Thank you. It was so much emotional turmoil to get through. Especially useful were your dialog translations. They get so into their characters, shouting over each other, it's hard to keep my comprehension beanie straight.

Haven't read the comments yet. Will do so next.

Best scene of the day for me was the one with Ari, Orlando and Isela. Her sultry charm didn't work on either man. She was just left standing there, alone with that come hither look on her face frozen. If things don't work out with Claudio (and who thinks it will), she has no one in the barrio to come back to. She burned those bridges.

Anon 12:36- 1) This is not really a typical tn in many ways. 2) Isela and Orlando was a secondary couple, and anything can happen with those. And 3) the writers have been channeling a Olando-Doris vibe from the beginning, and they wouldn't have done that for no reason. Ari and Isela are damaged people with very shady morals and values. Both Doris and Orly are straight shooters who have been deceived repeatedly by these two. The logical conclusion is that they will end up together. Just like MD and Max were deceived by and cheated on by Dan and Maleny.

After weeks of intense drama, and the last few days attest to this, I think I understand why some Carayers like light comedies.

Anon at 12:36--please get yourself a screen name and join the crowd on the Patio. You made some excellent observations.

To answer you, UA didn't report all of Jenny's conversation with Honoria. She said it was likely she carried a recessive gene for the disease and could just as easily been the cause of his disease. For it to become dominant, perhaps Fermin also carried a recessive gene, but she exonerated Fermin from contributing to it with alcohol. Muscular Dystrophy, ALS and Muscular Sclerosis are diseases we still don't know enough about.

Anita- Right. If it's a recessive gene, then both parents would have been carriers. But even knowing this, Honoria always put the blame squarely on Fermin's shoulders, blaming his alcoholism for Julian's medical issues.

Anita agree the best of show was Isela being shut down by Orlando and Ari. I watched again this morning and was just as satisfying.

Yep, Alma initially did see the good in Clara despite her roots, it was Claudio all along making demands of Leo and whom he associated. I was so angry when that self important ass, Claudio, demanding an apology of Leo, while allowing Beatriz to take the fall because it covered his deceit, knowing it absolved Clara. He must suspect Maleny stole the jewels too but protects her and serves his purpose. How convenient for him to have someone uneducated and poor to blame.

UA--What you said..."Claudio should know better. He knows about the non-suicide of Hector Santibanez. Why he still associates with Mama Bear and her cubs is beyond my understanding."

Early on we heard the adults had not been socializing after Hector committed suicide. It was only when the tn started they were brought back in contact. And even after that, their encounters have been few.

A word on Susana:

Susana suggested to Ivana last night that she adopt or at least help out orphans (by donating the ring), because there are lots of babies who don't have mothers who need them.

You know, Susana probably resents Ivana because taking care of Ivana probably put Susana's life on hold. Susana might not have wanted to take care of children, but got stuck with Ivana when she should've been dating & having fun. Men that Susana might've wanted to marry may not have wanted to take Ivana as part of a package deal and people of that class aren't down with the baby momma/baby daddy situations.

Josefa / Josefa's daughter:

Josefa's daughter might've had a different last name than Josefa or Claudio might not have paid attention to the little people. Josefa's daughter died at least 15 years ago; why would Claudio remember the name of a nobody?

Claudio:

It was not a surprise to see Claudio frame the maid for his crimes. We saw Claudio fixing the situation with Maleny years ago as well (I think Ursula or Claudio killed Hector). We saw Claudio get a protective order against Orlando to keep Isela for himself (also order goons to beat up Orlando).

Claudio is no upstanding citizen. Judge not lest ye be judged. That's what Josefa has been trying to bring to the light (even if her plan is sick & twisted).

Alma:

When that blanket is ripped away from her eyes, she will see a Claudio she doesn't even know and would be disgusted to know. This will probably be why she leaves Claudio, not the affair with Isela. The affair is just a bonus.

Anita- Yep. Claudio and Alma limited their Ursula time after Hector (Claudio's BFF) "committed suicide", but it does seem they kept some basic contact with each other. And we know that Maleny and Max began dating when they were the same age as Leo and Clara-- high school. After that point, Maleny must have spent a lot of time at their house.

Niecie et al--
About Isela asking Alma if they had sex on their anniversary. That conversation was broader than that. When Isela asked about "intimidades," she was referring to more than just their anniversary. Alma had been sharing her relationship with Claudio. She's recalling how on their anniversary, he had promised to work less to spend time with her, but he hasn't come through with any of his promises. Now look at them, they are more distanced than ever, even.....and she doesn't finish. Isela picks up on that and asks about sex. I don't recall if Alma actually answered, but it was obvious from her look that it was true.

Is that the answer Isela was looking for? Does she want to know if she is having an exclusive sexual relationship with Claudo? Does she want to believe she is "giving" Claudio what he wasn't getting at home? Is she afraid to admit she "took" something away from Alma that she had been getting at home before Isela came on the scene.

As I recall Alma looked pretty happy and satisfied after their anniversary night.

Anita, thanks for the info. Poor Alma. Her closest, trusted buddies now are Maleny and Isela.

Anita- Did a brilliant job explaining that conversation. Alma was in fact stating that they haven't been intimate (both emotionally and physically) SINCE their anniversary (we know they had sex on their anniversary), despite the promises Claudio made.

Yeah, I don't quite get why Isela wants to know. Does it make her happy to know that she has in fact disrupted Claudio's marriage? Or is she just pleased to know he's being exclusive (sexually) with her?

I think Isela was fishing to know if Claudio is exclusive to her. This girl is a mess.com. MD, I feel for her because she is clearly not thinking right. I mean there are no reasons good enough to call Dan. None even if it is about Julian. What good will that do? And who speaks with their rapist? She does because it's Dan and they have an history together. Unfortunately, I think she will somehow be pulled in Dan's games. Whatever they are. I hate rape stories. Period.
The recaps are as good as the show itself. So thank you.
Romy

I have reconsidered my thoughts about Alma after reading different perspective on how she behaved with Clara at the beginning. Maleny really knows how to manipulate her into doing things that she hadnt even considered on her own. Yes, I agree with anon207 that Alma will be so very disillusioned w her husband when she sees him as he really is and not just because of Isela. I will not change my mind about Isela, she is a snake.

Alma actually needs to get a life. She sits around all day fretting about Max, Leo and Claudio, lamenting the days of long ago where there was lots of activity at the house but now there is none.

Sometimes I think it goes back to what Maria Dolores told Max at the beginning of the story, when he was asking her why was she believing Dan's lies when she knew he was lying and MD replied because she wanted to believe him (or something to that effect).

Alma is believing everyone's lies because she wants to believe them.

She wants to believe Maria Dolores is a bad barrio person.

She wants to believe the maid stole Claudio's watch.

She wants to believe Clara ran up to her room and scooped up all her jewelry.

She wants to believe Orlando is a rapey stalker who tried to kill her son.

She wants to believe that Maleny is a good, sweet person who's in love with her son.

She wants to believe Claudio is just busy with work.

Because to disbelieve any of it means facing up to the fact that she is biased Clara & Maria Dolores because of their social class, even though she doesn't believe herself to be classist.

Because to disbelieve any of it means facing the fact that Claudio & Isela are having an affair, right under her nose and right under her roof.

Because to disbelieve any of it means facing the fact that Maleny is a lying, cheating weasel and she (Alma) would prefer a cheating, lying weasel as a wife to her son as long as they were of the same social class, than for Max to marry a barrio girl.

Because to disbelieve any of it means facing the fact that Orlando is an innocent victim, just like she is, of two lying, cheating snakes.

Alma doesn't want to face up to that. It's too much. She'd rather clip orchids & sit on her patio all day.

Anon207--You nailed it! Good list of beliefs vs. disbeliefs. Poor Alma, but at least she has her orchids, her patio and relative physical security from harm. Something MD has none of.

Correct me if I'm wrong about this, but wasn't MD a stand-out dress designer at the very beginning of the show? I'm pretty sure Ivana knew her worth and the Jacinto accusations just upset the smooth-sailing of the company. She probably had never had any experience dealing with this. Where was her HR dept. after this came to light? She was getting TMI from every direction, including Dan-Dan. Some of her enmity towards MD might surely have been based on her talent. Ivana KNOWS MD is talented.

Still, I fear for MD's and Doris' new on-line start-up company if Ivana decides to interfere.

I'm dying (well, not quite, figuratively, though) to know what Ivana plans to do with Dan and Max. This tn is sure keeping me riveted.

Anon, Anon, are you the same person who posted earlier? We have no way of knowing, or following your thought processes. Anon207 is a known poster. We've been reading and following those posts for many tns. Please, take a name--or a number. You'll be joining a great community.

Anon207, I was just about to post an almost identical comment! I don't think Alma's reactions have been all that odd, up until last night's episode. I mean, the facts and circumstances are stacked against MD. From Alma's perspective:

Maria Dolores
• Father murdered by strangers for money = poor person in dangerous neighborhood. (Too dangerous for her sons)
• Just met her and has heard virtually nothing but bad things about her
• Son had to get her friend out of jail
• Fired based on accusation of robbery
• Gets job back, immediately accused of robbery again
• Suddenly found to be dating super rich guy…who is dating someone else! = homewrecker
• Apparently, is either a gold digger, or was trying to extort money from rich guy’s family
• Friends and family constantly need legal and financial help – hospital bills, stalkers, rapists
• Moves rapidly from first rich boyfriend, to new rich boyfriend who is her son and was dating Maleny = homewrecker again
• Sister accuses her of planting jewels = cunning, plotting liar
• Sister admits to stealing jewels
• MD accuses Mal of sleeping around
• Friends barge into rich mom’s an attack people (Doris vs. Mal, Julian vs. Dan)
• Apparently still in or has returned to old bf’s bed?

vs. Maleny
Maleny
• Accidentally killed her father in tragic accident, emphasis on the tragic. Needs to be protected and loved and sheltered, especially because she was a child.
• Has known her since she was a child. Her son was in love with her for many years and proposed more than once.
• No friends in jail (no friends, really…)
• Not fired (no job…)
• No need to rob
• Was dating Max for many years
• Again, No need to rob, dating Max for years
• What, in the Santibanez circles?! Of course not!
• Flipped out when Max broke up with her…but apologized and replaced everything. Plus, still heartbroken.
• Brother has admittedly done some craziness, but apparently MD has that affect (after all, look how Max and Leo are acting towards their own mother!)
• Poor, loyal heartbroken Mal? Never! Max is her only man.
• Never! Her friends don't barge around (again, no friends…)
• Again, poor heartbroken, loyal Mal? Of course not! I'm sure Max was and is still her only...right?

Yes Josefa actually had one or two tears on her cheeks, unbelievable but true. Does she have some kind of heart after all.
I'm more disgusted with MD than anyone else at this point, but to call Daniel to meet her goes beyond stupid and inconsiderate of any feelings Max may have for her. She just keeps pushing Danny-Boy in Max's face.

Incredible photograph UA. You have such a gift for finding these. Thanks. Can't watch this...too dark. But always enjoy your photos and the wonderful titles the recappers come up with. Great team.

Isela, as the other woman, has the fantasy that big house and Claudio could be hers. Josefa wants to break up the family and destroy Claudio's reputation but I think Isela sees how they live on the other side of the tracks and likes it and Claudio is her ticket out.

Love all these lists to describe Alma's (addled) state of mind.

Hellashelle- I would change one thing. "Accidentally killed her father in tragic accident, emphasis on the tragic." Alma actually does NOT know/think Mal shot her dad. She thinks what Claudio told her-- that Mal's dad committed suicide in front of her. Still, doesn't change the "poor Maleny" storyline in Alma's mind.

Claudio, on the other hand, has jumped ship. He started out as this fine upstanding guy, but now he's firing maids to hide an affair. Which he's having with an employee. Who's staying in his teenaged son's room. In his home. Where he lives with his wife.

Sorry, Urban, I didn't say thank you for your fantastic recap! I have got to figure out how to get succinct; you're recaps always have the perfect amount of detail and dialogue! Send me your cool vibes this Thursday, I need to channel my amazing co-cappers.

Ah, that's right! I forgot that Claudio has only told Max and Alma the cover story. WEll, then it's even worse:

-Saw her father commit suicide in front of her (and she was a Daddy's Girl!)

Victoria I'm with you and cannot comprehend why MD would call to meet with Dan. Even if she wants to give him a piece of her mind about Julian or the rape or just to generally tell him he's a shit. I don't think she even thought about Max or much else since Dan came into her life it's been all Dan for good or ill.

Yeah, Josefa's tears were a shock to me. I almost wondered if I'd missed a scene where she riled Julian up to go after Dan or something. But Honoria was her only friend for a long time and she's always felt bad for Julian, even if her sympathy was heavily tinged with gossipy glee, expressed more in terms of MD being horrible than Julian being in a horrible situation and was/is incredibly condescending towards Julian.

I'm not sure why she called Dan either, but I'm guessing it's to deal with the house situation. After all, she clearly told Max to stay out of it because she and Dan would deal with it. And since she's apparently not going to the cops, she's got to do something since her rapist and blackmailer has the means to kick her entirely family out into the street.

If they are to discuss the mortgage they could by phone or in a well lit public place instead of alone at night with her back turned. Yeah MD put Max in his place with Dan holding the phone. Take that Max.

Tofie, you seem to want to think that MD still has a thing for Danny-Boy. She doesn't. I think she is trying to protect her mother, Clara, and Max from the worst of it. She also might need to recover her own strength. I would recommend karate classes.

One more thing that always bothers me in TNs: Guns. They're ever-present no matter the story type. In this one it's way too easy for Maleny to get her hands on one. I can understand their presence in LSdP in a rural environment but this is in a major city. WTH???

Wait. Other than the gun in the Santabanez house, when else has Mal had a gun? Of all the families in this tn, it the least surprising to me that they are the only ones with a gun in the house.

She had one in the hotel room, which was aimed at Ari. Presumably that is the same one, but why would there be one in the house if there was already a gunshot death in the family? That seems counter-intuitive.

Rich, sick people always need guns to protect their materialistic souvenirs.

Considering she was likely involved in killing him, I don't think Ursula gave a damn about the propriety of keeping a gun in the house after that.

I really can stand claudio even more after what he did to beatrice.
"How convenient for him to have someone uneducated and poor to blame".
why is it because this young woman is a maide it Is assumed she's uneducated and Poor? there are a lot of educated people in the service industry and they get paid well for it. They're not poor, maybe by these
People's standards I suppose. Thats their narrow minded thinking. I hate it.there will be
More thinking like that in the future, theres a
Ways to go with thid twisted mess.
Josey did look like she had a tear in her eye.
But thats not foolin me, that woman is full of
Hell. Isela may not be her bio kid, but shes
Actin like it. Ooooo these people!!

Well, Maleny can buy a gun at the Federal Registry of Fire Weapons offices in Mexico City. That's the only place you can buy a gun in Mexico, and you need to do alot of paperwork to get it, seeing as she has no previous criminal record and there's no record also of her suffering from mental illness (though she obviously is unstable), it could be a legal one. The Secretariat of National Defense control the registry and only one gun is allowed per citizen, you are only allowed certain calibers and the local authorities are notified if you are a gun owner.

But then, Maleny's gun could be illegal. I can believe the Santibañez would have the contacts with some lowly criminals to get some smuggled guns.

Jarocha

Jarocha,
Your knowledge of all things Mexican amazes me.!!!

Victoria- Jarocha is Mexican and lives in Mexico. She's our go to person when we want the real deal about how things are in Mexico, or how the Mexican audience reacted to a tn. She's also a wonderful person.

Viva,
I knew Jarocha lived in México but still her WIDE range of all things Mexican is astounding. I don't even keep up with what is happening in my neighboring state. And just think how many states Mexico has! !. We are lucky to have such a great Viewerville patio table.

Jarocha, if you are tuned in, kudos to you!!! I lived in Cholula, on the outskirts of Puebla, and sometimes wish I had never left.

Gotcha Victoria. Sometimes it's hard to know who knows who on the blog.

Victoria and Vivi, you are both too kind. Thank you.

Victoria, I've never been to Cholula even though I lived not too far for many years in Veracruz. I've been to the city of Puebla many times though, and I like that state. Right now I'm living in Baja California and, even though it still is Mexico, I think I only now just realized how different one place can be from another in the same country so I doubt I'll ever get to know as much of my country as I would like.

Jarocha

Jarocha
My husband and I would go back in a minute but our years during guerilla warfares and drug wars, we had enough!

Please help keep us up to date.
