TELEMUNDO Y MÁS (#1): Celia, Eva La Trailera, La Querida del Centauro, and Fatmagúl: Week of February 1, 2016
Labels: celia, centauro, eva-la-t, fatmagul, telemundo
Since I've pretty much decided to stay with this novela, I'll be happy to recap the Tuesday episodes.
Eva, a bit drunk, confronts her sister, Carmen. “How long have you known that my husband was sleeping with your daughter?” We see that Soraya is still with Eva, in the background. Carmen: “Why are you yelling at me? Why don’t you ask your miserable husband?” Eva: “No, I’m asking you, flesh of my flesh, blood of my blood. I can’t believe the horrible thing you both did to me.” She accuses Carmen of sending the envelope and key. Carmen swears she didn’t do it. Eva says she sent those things to destroy her. Carmen: “Why would I do that?” Eva: “Because you hate me. Because you’ve always hated me. Ever since my father lifted me into that tractor trailer for the first time, you’ve hated me!”
Carmen: “You’re not wrong. I’ve hated you my whole life. But I love my daughter and I would not have done anything to harm her.” Carmen swears that neither she nor Sofía sent that envelope. And that the enemy may be closer than she thinks.
Armando is hanging with Marlene, worried about Eva. Marlene says she isn’t answering her calls either. Andy hints that she may be getting revenge with some man, and Armando lunges at him.
Andy the Asqueroso leaves Marlene’s cottage and strolls into the big house. He looks admiringly around, strokes the furniture and sits down. Adriana chews him out for walking right into their house. He grabs her arm and pulls her onto his lap. But thankfully the maid comes in and says there has been a call from the school about an accident.
Pablo’s father and Pablo talk about the benefits and drawbacks of using Evancio for their case against Armando Montes.
Pablo gets a call from the school about an accident and rushes off.
Berta arrives home, and the maid tells her that Fabiola had an accident.
At the school Berta babbles to Adriana that Eva left and that they don’t know where she is. Pablo overhears this.
Eva tells Soraya about when she first met Armando. She had just gotten down from her tractor-trailer when some guys tried to molest her. Armando appeared out of nowhere and the two of them managed to beat up the guys. We next see the two of them in the tractor-trailer. He’s now driving the vehicle and asking for a job. She asks if it’s for a co-pilot or for a boyfriend. He says he’d like both. Eva sighs and tells Soraya that their love was so beautiful.
Soraya takes Eva home. Pablo walks up before she enters the house and she throws herself into his arms crying.
Carmen shows up at Marlene’s house. “You’re even worse than I imagined! You’re a traitorous bitch. You were the one who set it up so my sister would find Armando with my daughter!”
Still kind of drunk, Eva tells Pablo about finding Armando with her own niece. She asks him to take her away from here. She needs fresh air and doesn’t want her children to see her like this.
Soraya and Pancho go to an event at the country club. It’s meant to introduce them as prospective members.
Adriana follows her father to Sofía’s house. After he leaves she asks what’s going on. Exasperated, Sofía tells her that she’s her father’s lover.
Pablo takes Eva to his father’s cabin and tells her that no one will bother her there.
Carmen tells Marlene that she’s living in Eva’s house and on her charity. She also says that if neither Armando, Sofía nor she herself sent that envelope, and since Marlene knew about all of it, of course she sent it.
Pablo has tucked Eva into bed. She tells him he’s becoming her guardian angel. Suddenly she kisses him, passionately. Then she breaks away, horrified. He starts to apologize, but she tells him HE didn’t kiss her; SHE kissed him. She says she’s dying of shame. He starts to make a statement about how he feels about her, but turns to see she’s fast asleep.
Sofía tells Adriana she’s expecting Armando’s child.
At the country club, Cinthia Monteverde makes a ghastly speech about how the club was founded by their parents for people like them. She even says something about noble blood. She mentions añeja dinastia(an old dynasty). Soraya, pushed to her limit, says: “You’re right about añejo porque huele rancio . It’s old around here because something smells rancid.
Marlene finally admits to Carmen what she did. She tells her Carmen would have done the same except there’s no chance Armando would have been interested in her. Carmen, “That may be true, but if I expose your game…?” Marlene: “They’d never believe you!” Carmen: “Well, not at first, but the seed would be sown. And, if I choose to do so, I could be a huge rock in your shoe.”
Adriana confronts her father with what he did with Sofía. She runs sobbing to her room and Fabiola comes in to comfort her.
Armando blows up at Berta and fires her. She says she won’t leave until she gives the care of Fabiola to her mother.
Marlene suggests to Carmen that they be allies. If Carmen keeps quiet, when Marlene gets Armando and the business, she’ll make Carmen a partner in the business.
In the morning Eva and Pablo talk on the front porch of the cabin. She tells him to forget about the fact that she kissed him.
Soraya approaches Eva’s house and meets up with Marlene, introducing herself as Eva’s friend. Marlene is NOT very friendly. Soraya shakes Marlene’s hand and gets the same evil vibe off her that she got off Sofía. Soraya almost spills the beans about Pablo taking Eva away, but switches her story to it having been a taxi driver.
Pancho tells Soraya that the detective dio con ese malnacido (I think they mean the stepfather who gave away her baby and sold her into prostitution.) Soraya insists on going to see him alone.
Pablo brings Eva home, but she wants to be left off a ways away so no one will think something that isn’t true. She tells him she’s going to get a divorce.
ah, wonderful recap novelera, I am ever so grateful you do these for us.
I loved how Carmen zero'd in on Marlene and got in her face, I could get to like her, I wouldn't trust Marlene coming through with the deal, and I don't think Carmen does either, but maybe it will keep her off Eva's doorstep.
Sultry Sofia is kind of overplaying this pregnancy thing by telling Adriana,
hit her again Adriana.
but I'm really loving Soraya, no pulling the wool over her eyes, and a heart of gold, showing Pancho the goosebumps on her arm just talking about that snake Marlene.
but, getting Bobby back, we heard Friday the Adriana was 18, so he must be that or older, so...
Cinthia and Robert Monteverde, they look like they came from the same mold, white pasty faces always with the same expression, I keep waiting for Henry Zakka (Robert) to be Henry Zakka but he just mimics Sinthia, these two are so good, brilliant idea putting them together.
ah, so Marlene's plan is to end up with Armando and Mon-Sol.
I was so touched with Fabiola comforting Adriana, she tries to copy Adriana's plunge to the bed, then says Adri hurts, Adri hurts.
so Pablo tells Eva he will tell no one about the kiss,
but he doubts he will ever forget it.
(Arap Bethke (Pablo) does warm very well).
Que Culpa Tiene Fatmagul? Lunes Feb 1, 2016
Sami gives Asu/Hacer a thousand and one reasons why she should not go to the cops and tell them Kerim is not Vural's killer. She'd have to explain her ties to Kerim and the Fatma case, her past and how she got rich recently. Even if Kerim is not the killer, Sami argues, the real killer could threaten her life.
Mustafa continues stalker duty outside Fatma's restaurant but it is closed because of Kerim's arrest. He later stalks Vural's grave. He watches Leman and Semsi as they cry at Vural's grave.
Erdogan tells his mother he has to avenge himself on Resat, who used his arrest to sell their house from under them, and others, presumably Fatmagul and family, who harmed him.
Kadir gets the Vural forensic report at home via fax and it doesn't support Kerim's innocence. Ebe Nine and Fatma are in the room when the fax comes in and Kadir finally lets it slip he doesn't believe in Kerim's innocence as Fatma and Ebe Nine does because Kerim had been out-of-control and doing dumb things, which he had repeatedly warned against, before the murder. He's angry at Kerim for not heeding his advice. Also, as a lawyer he's had many clients whom he believed innocent and in the end they confessed their guilt. Ebe Nine is extremely offended by this, saying she wished she had known Kadir didn't believe in Kerim's innocence before they moved in with him because she wouldn't have agreed to the move if Kadir felt that way.
Kerim is in jail pining away for Fatma and the longing hits him hard when he hears one of the prisoners playing the song he and Fatma sang at the work dinner. He starts crying, obviously missing his wife. The prisoners notice and tell him to cheer up since his wife got permission to visit him. As they sing happy songs, Kerim remains in his corner of the cell pining away for Fatma.
At the same time, Fatma writes a heartfelt letter to Kerim telling him she never imagined he would transform from her enemy to someone who has been pivotal to her recovery. She is committed to him, not only because he never left her, even when she had wanted him to leave initially, but because she trusts and believes him. (To me this is Fatma's love declaration because Fatma had told the therapist in an earlier episode that trust is more important than love to her.) She writes, in contrast to what she said when he confessed he loved her, that there is hope for him and for their relationship. "There is always hope. There is always hope," she writes happily. A tear of joy, love, and sadness falls on the letter as she writes.
¿Que Culpa Tiene Fatmagul Lunes Feb 1 PART II of II
Hacer/Asu is bursting to tell Fatma that Kerim is not Vural's killer. She calls Mustafa asking for Fatma's number and lets him know she knows Kerim is innocent because she saw him the night of the murder. Musta is shocked, of course, and asks Hacer for her hotel's address so he can get over to her place pronto.
Kadir apologizes to Ebe Nine for offending her about his anger at Kerim. She says she was overly sensitive since it concerns her son but she understands why Kadir feels as he does. Kadir thanks Ebe Nine profusely for bringing light and life to his home.
Snooping in on this from her bedroom window is Mukaddes who is busted by Rahmi for snooping. He tells Muka to stop being trifling and saying everything on her mind as she had promised. She says she's sharing what she feels with him, not everyone and she's going to tell the truth. She feels Ebe Nine used Kerim in jail as an excuse to move them in with Kadir so she can snag him and it's working because sheband Kadir are so close now. She also says Kerim killed Vural for Fatmagul and Fatmagul is the cause of all their troubles. A flash of anger comes over Rahmi at this . He literally drags Mukaddes away from her snooping perch to their bed and tells her to behave herself since he doesn't want to hear her badmouthing Fatma and the rest of their family, either. Mukkades assuages his wrath by grabbing her pregnant belly and Rahmi immediately reverts back to his sweet, gullible self and offers to get her milk. When he leaves the room, it's obvious she was faking.
At the Hacer/Asu's hotel Mustafa tells Hacer he agrees with Sami that she should not get involved in Kerim's case because the court will ask a lot of questions. He says Kerim, from what he heard, already confessed. Asu is doubtful and tells Mustafa he's only telling her to mind her business because a jailed Kerim gives him the chance to get close to Fatma again. Mustafa tries to kiss away Hacer's doubts by telling her she's even more beautiful than before and he loves Hacer more than Asu. Asu falls for it as later on she sings Mustafa's praises to Sami when he calls. "He treats me like a queen," she raves.
Fatmagul nervously and excitedly gets ready for her visit to see Kerim. Although she's nervous she's prepared. She has the letter she wrote to him, their marriage certificate and a plant she planted herself to remind him of home. Mukaddes even bakes Kerim cookies he likes and gives them to Fatma for him. Kerim is also nervously getting ready; he shaves, puts on a clean, white henley and paces in the prison cell as he waits for Fatma's arrival.
The visit finally happens and after staring at each other, Fatmagul noting that Kerim has lost weight, our lovebirds hug. Kerim smells Fatma's hair and looks relieved. Fatma closes her eyes, and smiles with genuine happiness as she savors being in her husband's embrace.
END OF CHAPTER
Novelera, thanks so much for this splended recap. It helped me with some scenes that I didn't fully understand. Also, I loved "Andy the Asqueroso." If "Andy" weren't already such a short name I'd suggest we call him AA from now on.
As always, I welcome the inclusion of Spanish.
I was disappointed and perhaps a bit surprised that Eva didn't press Carmen for more info when Carmen said that the enemy may be closer than Eva thinks. And I half expected Marlene to serve Carmen some poisoned tea after Carmen rightly accused her of being the one who sent Eva the document and the keys (though I'm glad she didn't: Carmen becomes more interesting in each episode). Since Carmen was astute enough to figure out that Marlene sent the stuff to Eva, I assume that she's also astute enough not to trust Marlene to make her a partner after she supplants Eva with Armando and Mon-Sol. Indeed, I expect Marlene to try eventually to kill Carmen.
Poor Eva: both her sister and her best friend are out to do her in. She clearly needs a guardian angel.
Deb, I loved your comments, esp. "Hit her again, Adriana!" I wonder whether Telemundo had medical support staff at the filming of this slap-happy novela.
I agree that Arap Bethke does warm very well, but I'm really having problems with his bug-eyed stares.
Thank you so much, JdesdeNYC! I won’t get a chance to watch this episode until tonight. This would have been the second half of the season 2 premier- episode 40.
I can’t believe Asu is even hesitating to come forward and tell what she knows to help Kerim. Well, maybe I can, after she helped the Yasaran paint innocent Fatmagul as a loose woman in court. But this is a man’s life we are talking about! I get Sami’s worry for her, but he needs to butt out. He doesn’t know any of the players involved and it’s not his business. And don’t even get me started on Stalker Mustafa! Now he’s conning Asu into believing that he loves her? Ugh! Can’t believe Asu is falling for that b.s.
I totally get why Kadir thinks Kerim could have killed Vural. He very well could have! One wrong blow from Kerim and Vural could have gone down and hit that rock, just like he did with Mustafa. Plus, Kadir has seen firsthand how out of control Kerim gets around any of those guys, AND he was the first to see Kerim after his confrontation with Vural when he was still bloody and hopping mad. Kerim is just lucky that someone else didn’t see him in that state right after. I hope this doesn’t drive a wedge between him and Ebe Nine.
The letter sounds beautiful. I’m glad Fatma has written and told him that she trusts and believes in him, since we know how important that is for her.
Looks like we’re back to 2 hour episodes the rest of the week.
J you nailed this. Thanks muchos! Your description of Fatma's feelings while writing the letter to Kerim are on target. The scene of them embracing in the prison visit was superb, the expressions on each of their faces and the camera panning their wedding rings said it all.In spite of their troubles this was a happy moment. Every time you think Musta can'T go any lower, he does. How dispicable of him to toy with Asu's feelings. However, this girl is street wise she just might figure out his motives.
Something I noticed, and maybe others did as well. When we first saw Marlene, after the years had passed since her attempted suicide, her hair looked jet black. With the black hair, red lips and very white face, someone said she looked like Dracula. I came up with Marlacula.
But now her hair looks lighter to me, sort of auburn in a certain light. Not sure if this is because she was in the shadows when we first saw her, or if they figured out how the black, black hair made Erika look very creepy and changed to another wig. I still can't believe she chopped off all that gorgeous blonde hair. But, if it's a wig, it's a good one.
Mukka is such a ditch digger and she hasn't learned a darn thing from her recent austracising. Reality is she is just an unhappy miserable person who takes joy in manipulating others or seeing others unhappy. Oh how I wish Rahmi was stronger. Ebe is on to her but is limited in what she can do because she doesnt want to hurt Rahmi or Fatma. If Kerim hadnt gone to jail Fatma would be rid of Mukka as the plan was 4 her Kerim and Ebe 2 get their on place. Now they are stuck with Mukka and her evil ways.
Nett
So Sami and Asu are friends? I thought he was her handler...I dont get why she has anything to do with him if she has put that life behind her?
Nett- Before she left town before the trial, Asu gave Sami a fat wad of cash and told him to get out of the sex biz. Now, he's a cab driver and not a prostitute handler. She told him that despite their issues with each other, she felt he was a good person and she considers him a friend. And really, he IS her only friend. He knows exactly what she used to do, and he doesn't judge her. He also tells it to her straight, and I hope he warns her off Mustafa.
I'm finally watching yesterday's episode. I love how Fatma teases Ebe about Kadir. So cute.
who was the insurance guy, was he in Bajo, a cop, maybe the bad one?.
I think the hit man Andy hired is el Chivo, the guy who killed Pablo's wife,
pizza anyone?
and I'm kind of fascinated by Nicole Apollonio (Fabiola) who was the daughter Clara in "Reina de corazones", I don't know much about autism, but I'm guessing her acting is 'perfect'.
Just a brief note to say that I'm running late, but I hope to have the recap up at noon or thereabouts. Lo siento.
Part 1:
The spell of the heartfelt hug between Kerim and Fatmagul is broken when the guard in the visiting room suddenly calls out that there can be NO TOUCHING! Our lovers reluctantly break apart and sit across from each other. The don’t break their eye contact as they catch up. Fatmagul tells him of the move, and the things she brought for him. She passes on the messages of love from the family and Ebe Nine. He asks if she’s been studying for her next round of exams (she hasn’t), and urges her to continue on with her studies and the restaurant—she’s worked too hard for these things to be thrown off track now. He finally asks about Mustafa. Fatma has to admit that she’s seen him a few times (but not that he’s stalking her), and even says Mustafa is just trying to be helpful and protective. Ay! This sets Kerim off, and Kadir and the guard have to tell him to cool it. Kerim demands that Kadir keep Mustafa away from Fatma, and tells Fatma that Mustafa is just taking advantage of him being imprisoned to get back into her life. Fatma assures him there’s no chance of that.
The two get down to business speaking with Kadir about the evidence so far and what it means for Kerim. It’s not good, but Fatma shares her new mantra that there is always hope. Too soon, the time is up. They quickly and secretly exchange the letters that they have written for each other. She promises to come again as soon as she is allowed, and he asks her to write him every day. They take each other’s hand and only let go when the guard demands that Kerim leave. Fatma breaks down and cries when he’s out of site, and Kadir comforts her.
Kerim picks up the bags (clothes in one, food in the other) and the flower plant Fatma brought for him. He is truly touched by the plant, and can’t stop smiling when he looks at it. His cellmates note his happiness. He hands them the bag of food to share, and opens his letter as he looks at his plant. He reads Fatma’s words of love and hope, and she also details how she found this plant in their garden in their first home in Istanbul, nearly dead, and she planted it and cared for it with her own hands. It’s a symbol of hope. One of his cellmates tells Kerim that those flowers are called forget-me-nots. Along with the letter in the envelope, Kerim finds that Fatma has enfolded her crocheted flower chain that had been in his keepsake box.
Later, his new good mood is soured by one of the prisoners who has been eyeing him ever since he came back happy from his visit. He approaches Kerim and warns him that he’s “heard” that his enemies, the Yasaran, have spies in the jail trying to get info out of him that they can use in the trial, like an admission of guilt, or to pick a fight with him so that he’ll be sent to a rougher prison. I’m pretty sure THIS guy is the one hired by the Yasaran, and his plan works perfectly. Kerim becomes paranoid, cold and suspicious of his other cellmates (who seem like nice guys).
Part 2:
Fatmagul can barely wait to get into the cab before she reads Kerim’s letter. His letter reaffirms his love for her, and also reassures her of his faith in her strength and her ability to achieve all her goals. He wants her to keep moving forward. Thinking of her is what keeps him going.
The cab pulls over to get gas, and while Kadir waits, Fatma goes to the restroom to wash her tear-stained face. She runs right into Mustafa’s mother, who insists on speaking to Fatmagul and follows her out to the cab. Mustafa’s dad sees them and also tries to speak to Fatma. They apologize for turning Mustafa against her, and beg her forgiveness. It is a thing of beauty to see Fatma dress them down. She says she’s glad it happened. All their masks fell away, everyone put their cards on the table and she was able to see who she was really dealing with. They saved her from a life of living with people who didn’t really care about her. Since they are nothing to her, then she doesn’t really have any place giving them forgiveness. But if they need it, they have it. She gets into the cab, without even a backwards glance or a tear.
Back in Istanbul, Mustafa is having to work quite hard to juggle his lies and his women. He’s stalking Fatma’s business and home. He’s working overtime to convince Asu/Hacer to NOT tell Fatma about being a witness the night Vural was killed. He does this by lying about his love for her, moving her into his place, and playing happy families with her. He’s also dodging calls from his fisherman friend (didn’t catch his name) who loaned him the boat that night. Things get a bit tricky when Meltem visits his house, and meets Asu/Hacer there. Both women immediately know the other has slept with Mustafa, but they keep it civil. Meltem tells Asu she came by to tell Mustafa about an upcoming interview he has with her father for a job. Asu confronts Mustafa about Meltem, but he lies, brings up Asu’s prostitute past again, and then has to make it up to her with more declarations of love and nookie. The dog then calls Meltem while Asu is in the shower, and jokes with her about being jealous, and the “real” reason she came to see him. She’s just had a run-in with another dog—Selim, who’s had her followed and had the nerve to slap her in public, in a restaurant, when she admits to sleeping with Mustafa. She’s not in the mood for Mustafa’s games, and tells him to go to hell and to watch out for Selim. She’s going to Ankara (where her parents live).
The Yasaran are still in a financial downward spiral, thanks to Meltem’s dad, Turaner. Everyone, including a depressed Leman (Semsi is trying to get her into a clinic), are all living under the same roof now. Erdogan is clearly plotting his revenge on Resat, even as he works side by side with his uncle to find investors. His first order of business, however, is to get back at Turaner. Selim is on board with that. He wants to get revenge on Meltem. Erdogan hires a high priced call girl he knows in Ankara to “run into” Turaner, pretend to be an old acquaintance who now works in PR (a great need for Turaner at the moment), seduce him, tape it, and then distribute the sex tape to ruin Turaner. We see the initial phases of this honey trap, and it seems to be working. When the boys explain the plan to Resat, the three share a gleefully wicked laugh over it. Perihan eyes them suspiciously.
Part 3:
Fatmagul and Ebe Nine get the restaurant up and running again, and take pity on a young, homeless college student, Mehmet, who offers to work for free, in exchange for room and board in the restaurant. Though they worry he could be a Yasaran spy (he doesn’t seem to be), they take pity on him, and even see the benefit of someone being in the restaurant at night to guard it. At home, Kadir is still giving Ebe Nine moon eyes, while she pretends he isn’t, and Fatma teases her and giggles about it. Mukaddes is still popping up (even in the main house) and butting in to things not her business. She gets to gloat a bit to the entire family when the paternity test shows that Rahmi is the father of her baby. Fatma finally has enough of her, and in another scene that should be savored tells Mukaddes off. She points out to Mukaddes how both she and Ebe Nine have been there for her and supported her as woman, and yet she never hesitates to stab them in the back. The argument gets heated, and Rahmi comes to break it up. He asks Fatma not to upset pregnant Mukaddes, and Fatma can’t believe that Mukaddes has managed to drive a wedge between her and her brother. This makes her very sad.
There is also some good news for the family, that Omer brings back from Izmir. The authorities found another set of footprints at the murder site. Footprints that come in from the water, and then appear to run back. Someone came in by boat and left the same way! But, Kerim was there the whole day-- why didn’t he hear the boat? Perhaps because he was fighting with Vural at the time? Did the person hide? Too many questions that they don’t have answers for, but this represents real hope for Kerim!
Mustafa receives another call from his fisherman friend, and Asu/Hacer encourages him to answer. He learns his friend has been calling because he’s come to Istanbul and wants to see Mustafa. Mustafa nervously invites him over to have dinner with him and Asu. Although he tries his best to control the conversation, the friend spills the beans that he loaned Mustafa his boat that day and that Mustafa came back late. Asu gets excited that perhaps Mustafa might have seen something from his vantage point on the water that could help Kerim’s case. He claims he went in the other direction and saw nothing.
The guilt finally gets to Asu and she finds Fatma’s number in Mustafa’s phone and calls her. Mustafa snatches the phone from her hands before she can say much, then takes the lead in “helping” Kerim by telling Fatma they has info on the case. He insists they meet her in person. The whole family and Kadir meet him and Asu in the restaurant, and he takes over telling them about what Asu saw before she left, that she “just” returned (it’s been at least a week or two at this point), and that THEY decided to tell Fatma and Co. He soaks up Fatma’s words and look of gratitude and joy. Then Fatma and Rahmi make the mistake of sharing what they learned about the footprints that came from the water. The killer likely came and went by boat! Mustafa gulps. Asu looks at him wide-eyed, as the truth about Vural’s real killer dawns on her.
-End of episode.
After Eva spends the night in Pablo's father's cabin sleeping off a drunken state, Pablo drives her to her house. She asks him not to park close to the house. She doesn't want anyone to get the wrong idea. She thanks Pablo, repeats that they're just friends, and enters the house to find her daughter Adriana distraught over the possibility that her missing mother has killed herself. Eva assures her that she would never do that, she would never do anything that would harm her daughters. Marlene, who is also present, looks as if she has eaten something that hasn't agreed with her.
Eva comforts Fabiola about her fall from the tree and repeats with her a saying that ends with si no sanas hoy, sanarás mañana (if you're not well today, you'll be well tomorrow). She then asks to speak with her daughters alone. Everyone else leaves, and Eva tells her daughters that she is going to divorce their father. She tells them that the only thing that lasts forever is a mother's love for her children. Andriana says that her father is a wretch who betrayed them. Eva tells her that Armando betrayed her, Eva, but only her. He loves his daughters very much.
Meanwhile, Soraya arrives at an assisted living facility. She presents herself as a loving niece who has come to see her uncle Arnulfo. She says that she has been out of the country and thus has not seen him for a long time. The nurse tells her that he's in bad health, that his lungs have been affected by emphysema, and it's important not to agitate him. Soraya the concerned and loving niece assures her that she'll be careful, and then Soraya the enraged niece seeking venganza enters the room where her clearly ill uncle is hunched over in a chair. At first, he doesn't recognize her. "Who are you?" he asks. She replies, "I'm hatred, I'm anger, I'm your damned guilt that has come to torture you." She reminds him that he took her newborn son and sold him to some rich people and then abandoned her to degenerates. He remembers her name: "Purita." "I was Purita, your niece, she replies, "now I'm Soraya, and I'm going to be your worst nightmare." She reminds him that he not only took her son from her, he then got rid of her in a filthy brothel where she was made infertile for life.
Pancho walks in as Soraya is venting to Arnulfo. She's surprised to see him. He replies, "Did you think I'd leave you alone with this rat, this human offal (piltrafa humana), after what he has done to us?" He starts to choke Arnulfo. The fast-thinking Soraya returns to her loving niece persona and calls for help, her poor uncle can't breathe. Apparently Soraya has made it seem as if her uncle simply had an attack of emphysema.
Pablo and his father Martin discuss the investigation of Mon-Sol. Martin says he hopes they'll soon be able to have proof of Armando's corruption. Pablo says he'll find proof, he's sure. He's sure Armando is guilty. "How can you be so sure?" asks Martin. "I don't know, I simply know," replies Pablo. Martin suspects that Pablo's certainty has to do with his feelings for Eva. He warns Pablo to be careful that he doesn't fall. He's better off making a landing, because an emergency landing is very painful (los aterrizajes forzosos son muy dolorosos). Pablo assures him that his feet are firmly planted on the ground, and he knows what he's doing.
Eva comes to Mon-Sol and goes to Marlene's office. Marlene is surprised to see her there. She asks Eva how she is and wants to know where she was last night. She keeps telling Eva she's acting very strange, and she should know that she can count on her, her comadre. "It's as if I were your sister." [Yep, that's for sure!] Eva says she knows she can trust her, and so she'll get right to the point: "I need you to vacate your office. I need it right away, today." Marlene is taken aback. Eva explains that this is the second-largest office in the company, and that she wants people to remember who she is, and to have one of the largest offices in the company she founded is a good reminder. Marlene asks her what she's planning to do. "What I should have done ages ago," replies Eva. "Bring order to my company." She leaves, and Marlene immediately calls Armando.
Eva encounters Evencio. He is very apologetic for what Sofia did. Eva says she just found out yesterday. He lets her know that he too found out yesterday. He again tells her how embarrassed and sorry he feels. He couldn't be a good father to Sofia. Eva assures him that he's a good man.
The scene shifts slightly to a confrontation between Pablo and Betty, who has come to Mon-Sol to see him. He's annoyed that she has come. There's another scene later on between them at Pablo's house, where she has come with pizza for everyone. There, he gives her the "you're a wonderful woman for some man" speech. She presses him about there being another woman, and he finally says yes, there's another woman. She leaves. [If someone wants to say more about these scenes, please do. I find Betty's behavior too painful to write about or even make fun of. Also, for those keeping the Slap Count, Betty slaps Pablo during the scene in his house.]
Eva comes to Armando's office and outlines the three points of her plan: they will divorce, they will split the company, and he can no longer live in the house. He rejects all three. She says that if they can't agree, she'll let the lawyers deal with it. She leaves his office.
Marlene tells Eva that of course she should get half of everything, but she needs a good divorce lawyer. Eva tells her she doesn't know any, and her dear friend Marlene recommends one: Alberto Silva. He comes right away, and while he and Eva are talking, Marlene is assuring Armando that Alberto Silva will do what she wants, and that he will give them time for Armando to figure out how to get everything put in his name. She tells Armando that she's here for whatever he needs. He is somewhat puzzled. Yes, you're on my side and not on Eva's. Why? She tells him that she doesn't think that what Eva is doing regarding Mon-Sol is fair. "I also helped build Mon-Sol," she says. "I don't what Mon-Sol to disappear." Eventually, she comes on to him, and she leaves his office once again telling him that he can count on her for whatever. He remains rather puzzled.
At the office, Eva is told that there's a call for Marlene but she's not there. Eva takes the call. It's from Salvador Mendez of the insurance company. He tells her that he is suspending Mon-Sol's insurance. She comes to see him and asks why he is doing this. He realizes from her reaction that she doesn't know what's been going on. "I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this," he says, "but Mon-Sol is no longer a trustworthy company. There have been too many robberies, and there's suspicion of fraud."
While Eva is hearing the bad news about Mon-Sol, Soraya and Pablo are watching Bobby and Adriana. The next thing we know, Bobby and Adriana are swimming in her pool when along comes Soraya in a bathing suit and jumps in. "Tell me about your lives," she says out of the blue to the astonished pair. They work their way out of the pool. Andriana goes inside for some towels while Bobby lies down on a chaise longue. Soraya gets out of the water, sees that Bobby is asleep, comes over and pulls on the waistband of his bathing trunks. Adriana returns before Soraya can proceed any further. Soraya leaves, and Andriana tells Bobby that that strange woman has a thing for him. "She was watching you, and she almost touched your butt" (casi te toca las pompas). Don't be ridiculous, says Bobby. "She could almost be my mother!" [You got that one right, Bobby!]
Eva tells Armando that the company no longer has insurance. Armando says that they'll find another company. Eva points out to him that if they can find another company, a policy will cost them a lot more, because the company is no longer trustworthy. "Someone in the company is defrauding the insurance company," she tells him. From now on, things will be different, and there will be an audit.
Andy asks a low-life friend of his to kill someone for his sister. The guy asks for $5000. Andy gives him $2000, with the remainder once the job is done. It has to be done quickly, Andy tells him, and shows him a photo of Carmen and Evencio! The guy assures him that he'll take care of it by tonight.
Armando arrives at his house to find that the code has been changed and he can't get in. As Eva is talking to her daughters (Adriana has been complaining about Soraya's bizarre conduct re Bobby), they suddenly hear Armando screaming as he enters the room. He's furious, and his daughters are scared. He apologizes to the girls, Adriana berates him for his conduct with Sofia, and she and Fabiola leave the room. Eva and Armando talk, and then she asks him to leave. He sits down and dares her to try to throw him out. Finally, Berta and the maids come into the room and he leaves.
After he leaves, Eva heads for Marlene's cabin but finds Marlene and Andy outside. She asks to speak to Marlene alone. Andy leaves, and Eva asks Marlene not to let Armando come through there to enter Eva's house. Andy, meanwhile, is coming on strong to Adriana. He is kissing her when Eva comes upon them. He leaves, and Eva tells Adriana not to trust him. "You don't know him," protests Adriana. "Neither do you," replies Eva.
In the last scene in the episode, Eva finds the handkerchief Pablo gave her. She smells it, just as the phone rings. It's Pablo. "Do you want to talk in person?" he asks, as he comes into her room. [Perhaps she should find a better home security firm.]
Brava brava Juanita. This show is moving right along! what a great recap. No kidding about that slap count. This is the slappingest novela I've ever seen.
I agree with AnonGringa: Salvador Mendez, the insurance guy is Rodolpho from Bajo without the mustache. And I think Soraya's bad uncle looked like Erick's father from Bajo.
deb; I no expert on autism but I'm also fascinated watching Fabiola. And Pablo's kid, with Asperger's demonstrates a different end of the spectrum. I love seeing the contrast between Armando's disdain & indifference and the profound unconditional love of Pablo for their respective children.
CELIA
Thanks Carlos for the heads up about the 8PM próximas: "Celia ends on Monday Feb 8. Quien Es Quien premieres Tues Feb 9 at 8pm ." I'll repeat this on our Part#2 front page on Thursday, in case anybody's skimmed over it here.
I have been finding so many of these Turkish traditions to be so interesting. While I was in Turkey noticed the nazar (evil eye bead) everywhere, and loved being invited to tea wherever I went (our characters are ALWAYS drinking tea). I also noticed the last two episodes Mustafa's mom throwing a pitcher of water after his car, and Ebe Nine doing the same after Fatma and Kadir drove off. I found that it means this: "Turkish people pour water in the wake of someone's departure for a trip to ensure their journey there and back flows as smoothly as water." I have not yet found an explanation for why Fatma puts her thumb to the roof of her mouth when someone/thing startles her, like when Kerim caught her peeking at her birthday cake.
another wonderful recap Juanita,
thank you so very much.
when Marlene was comforting Adriana, saying a strong woman like Eva would never kill herself, I think Adriana said what about you (referring to her attempted suicide)
interesting how Marlene is Eva's best friend, yet now Eva is not letting her in on her plans, kicked her out of her office, and berated her for letting Armando in, Marlene in her finest nightwear standing in the back yard waiting for Armando.
and Armando is taken aback by Eva's best friend (Marlene) trying to help him, what's up with her?
I wish Soraya would meet Eva's new lawyer, I'm sure she would have goose bumps all over.
Betty with benefits, I'm sure a district attorney gets what she wants or else.
Wow, that was one fabulous recap, Juanita. You got it all!
I especially liked your translating what Adriana called her father as wretch. That’s a great term for him.
I was wondering about the “uncle” business for Arnulfo. I thought she just said she was his niece to get access. And I thought Soraya said he was her stepfather and that, after her mother died, then he sold the baby and her into a brothel. But maybe he was the uncle instead, not sure.
I’m finding Martín a tiny bit annoying. I’ve liked the actor in other roles, especially as Ximena’s father in the first El Señor de los Cielos, the only good one in my opinion. But he’s so hyper and he treats his son like he’s a teenager. I got the impression he WANTS Pablo to be with the ghastly Betty. Marrying Betty would be Pablo sentencing himself to obsessive jealousy and controlling behavior for as long as this mismatch lasted.
What I noticed about the scene with Armando and Marlene, well-acted by both, in my opinion, was that she leaned close to him and said he could count on her. She’s making the first step in her seduction.
I thought Soraya was maybe looking for a birthmark on Bobby. I also did not like the way the two young people behaved toward Soraya, very fresa behavior on both their parts.
I work with people from México and I asked two, a man and a woman, about what Eva said to Fabiola last night. Sana, sana, colita de rana. I’ve heard this one before. Both my co-workers told me this is VERY common. It’s what a mother or abuelita says to a child who has hurt themselves in a minor way. Translated it doesn’t make much sense, but I always enjoy hearing it.
novelera- I think it was Soraya's aunt who had the farm and took her in, and Arnulfo was her husband.
Thanks very much, SpanProf, for your kind words about the recap. I think you may well be right about Betty playing more of a role later on, and the one you suggest (spreading rumors about Pablo and Eva) seems quite plausible. Hope she gets slapped a few more times for that!
LXV, muchas gracias for your enthusiastic response to the recap.
Yes, you and AnonGringa are right about Salvador Mendez: he was the inimitable and irrepressible Rudolfo in Bajo. Wow, what a difference in roles! (I suppose it's appropriate, but I think he was more guapo in Bajo. I can't believe it was just the mustache.)
Good point about the difference between Armando's coldness/discomfort with Fabiola and Pablo's love and devotion to Diego. (To be fair, I suppose it's more difficult the more severe the autism, but still, I suspect the two men would respond differently no matter what.)
Deb, thanks muchly for your very kind words re the recap. IIRC, Adriana started to say "like you" to Marlene, but I think she stopped herself before she completed the statement.
As for Marlene and Armando, I agree that the scene was very well acted by both. I hesitated about describing what she did as coming on to him, though that IS what she was doing, but the wording fails to convey the subtlety that you so rightly describe.
It didn't occur to me that Soraya might have been looking for a birthmark, but that seems a lot more normal and plausible than any other explanation I can think of. Frankly, although Bobby and Adriana were somewhat rude to Soraya, I think the rudeness was understandable and perhaps even justified. This strange woman whom they didn't know suddenly jumps into the pool and starts asking them about their lives. Huh?? I suspect that I too might have tried to get out of the pool ASAP. It's interesting that Soraya has such sensitive vibes about some people but seems totally clueless about the impression she is making in this scene.
Oops, I attributed to deb both the description of the scene between Marlene and Armando and the idea about Soraya's looking for a birthmark, whereas in fact it was novelera whose comments I was addressing there. Duh...sorry. Both of you (deb and novelera) make so many great comments.
Anyway, many thanks, novelera, for your kind words AND your very interesting comments, including but not limited to the ones for which I thanked deb. I think it's time for me to get away from the computer for a while and crawl back under my rock.
41 is one of my favorite episode. Everything is in it! How Fatma gives him hope, how she cries when Kerim left( it wasn't just tears) how she cries while reading the letter. And one of the most wonderful scene: the confrontation with Mustafa's parents!!! Thank them to turning their back to her,and when she said "you saved me from being condemned to a life based on benefits a life without love" and this just after reading Kerim letter,a letter full of love, full of hope,a letter from someone in jail who encourages her to live,to fight. I also loved that Kerim -despite being in jail for a crime of murdering someone and up until this moment had no hope of proving he's innocent- still remembered she had an exam & wanted her to study. Told her that life must go on no matter what happened. He was the one who might spend the rest of his life in jail and he was the one worrying about her future even if he won't be part of it. That is true love. As for Muka, happy and proud that the DNA test proved the baby was Rahmi’s is super stupid. What the hell does that prove?!! She still cheated on him, still left him, left Murat, messed Fatmagul’s case, what’s there to be proud of?!!
Thank you so much for the recap.
JdesedeNYC, another excellent recap. Thanks! I liked your note about how by telling kerim he has her trust and that she believes in him, it was like fatmagul was declaring her love. I agree. It was a hard lesson she had to learn about relationships not just being kisses and promises, but a lesson she did learn as one can see by the emphasis she puts on trust.
Like ya'll have commented it was a sweet and happy moment at the prison meet. And I couldn't help but just smile throughout the scenes we saw fatmagul and kerim anxiously get ready for their visit that they were so looking forward to. Especially at kerim declining a jailmate's offer to walk around outside because he didn't want to sweat, HA!
Vivi, I haven't read your recap because I haven't finished watching yesterday's episode but thank you. I did catch the first line and yep talk about throwing a bucket of cold water, way go to guard! They were having a moment!
I also love to see all the Turkish traditions. They also showed one about walking inside a new home with your right foot. And the one that fatmagul mentioned to tease ebe nine about placing a mirror under the bed to see who her husband was going to be the first night they moved into their new home. I wonder if the thumb thing is more of local/regional tradition?
jlk
Romy- It WAS a great episode. Thanks for including Fatma's direct quote to Mustafa's parents. I did the recap from memory from my office this morning after watching last night, so I didn't remember the exact words. I LOVED seeing Fatma telling Mustafa's parents and Mukaddes off. Amen to everything you said about Mukaddes.
Can you believe Selim slapped Meltem in public like that? Hello! She's your EX wife. She can sleep with whomever she wants. I was hoping that those people recording the confrontation with their cell phones would post it online. "Rapist beats ex-wife in public!" I'd love to see that headline and another scandal for the Yasaran.
I really enjoyed the recap. On the topic of tea...I noticed that no matter what the location or social class...everyone drinks tea from the exact same type of tea cup...what's with that. I do see a different cup for coffee but for tea...it's the same cup.
I assume that when Fatma puts her thumb in her mouth after being scared...it's a symbol of putting her heart or spirit back in after being scared. If you notice, she doesn't just put her thumb in her mouth....but she pushes up as if she's shoving something back in.
In this culture...like most....its a mans' world so of course it's OK for a man to be indignant even after committing multiple crimes...but a woman is to be shamed for the slightest transgression. No way does Selim have the right to slap his ex after all he's done. I was so outdone that Selim expected his ex-wife to be faithful to him...a rapist.
Asu is so gullible for someone of her former profession. She must really be in love to buy Mustafa's weak show of love.
I too was pleased with the way Fatma handled herself with Mustafa's parents. They helped to set him off on his course of craziness and self destruction. Ultimately he made the decision to do the crazy things he did without listening to Fatma....knowing her character....but they played their role and she doesn't owe them anything. The one thing they did correct was to question Mustafa as to why he worked for the Yassaran's after all the rumors...but that was too little too late.
Fatma did tease Ebe about Kadir...and it cute and simple. But Mukka's approach to Kadir on Ebe was just messy and out of order. She continues to dig and poke around in such a tacky manner. She still hasn't been dressed down appropriately. Then again, she has no shame...nothing stops her.
Nett
Nett- Having been in Turkey-- Yes, everyone drinks tea from that same style glass cup. It was the same when I was in Egypt too. I'm guessing it pops up in other Muslim countries too. I love tea, so I loved it. Time for tea (again)? Well, yes, I think I will have some. :)
So true that nothing stops Mukaddes, because she truly has no shame.
Vivi, great recap. Nett, I agree this is one of my favorite chapters. I remembered Fatma telling the therapist that trust is more important than love because that's when she had found out Kerim had gotten arrested with the Yasarans and Vural on the drug charge after the rape and she was upset he hadn't told her about that arrest and it signaled to her she still couldn't trust Kerim. I lovebthat Fatma is like me in matters of the heart: her love language is acts of service. It matters more to her what her partner DOES than what he says or gives her.
part 1
la noche loca,
Pablo spouts some shakespeare, Lola says it won't work, I'm a truckdriver,
Pablo wants to be with her, Eva says no way,
Pablo can tell when she lies
hmm, apparently Andy is after Adriana at Marlene's request, because it will hurt Eva, and anything that hurts Eva is good.
which reminds her, she calls Carmen to have a meet at another address, el Chivo ?? is waiting in his unnoticeable red thunderbird convertible and as Carmen leaves the house, he mows her down, as he gets out to finish the job but a crowd arrives and calls an ambulance, he scrams.
Alberto the lawyer visits Marlene, but in order to play, he wants to know her game, she spills, to reclaim the house and get Mon-Sol, how he asks, that's why you're here, she says.
a drunk Armando (with Evencio and a mariachi band in tow) serenades, Eva wants Pablo gone, but it seems it was easier getting in.
Pancho and Soraya, out stalking Bobby, are amused, Soraya spots "that guy" sneaking out.
Cinthia and Robert are annoyed, call the police, who haul away Armando.
as Marlene and Alberto watch, I guess I'm the only one that thinks they're being together is suspicious.
Pablo arrives home and says he likes being mischievous, his dad gives him the job of getting into Mon-Sols books, Eva is getting all dreamy eyed thinking of Pablo, almost calls him, but he calls her, he swoons and she throws it all back, never going to happen, but he is just thrilled talking to his hermosa dama,
Soraya runs into Eva the next morning, tells her she looks good, she is holding her head high, not like her husband, and mentions seeing 'that guy' sneak out during the confusion.
Sofia goes looking for Carmen as Evencio seeing she is not at the house runs in to get some of his things, neighbor Alex pops in to give them the bad news, they rush to the hospital, the doc says Carmen has brain damage, broken ribs, etc. etc. and is in a coma (which happens quite often to annoying people in novelas that know too much)
Pablo pops into to accounting to see about direct deposit for his check, manages to lift Javier's badge who has run off to see Eva.
Marlene shows up at work to find out Eva has taken over her office, is there a problem she asks, no, yes Eva replies, all the years you hid from me Armando's flings is a betrayal in itself, and some quick thinking on Marlene's part, you're right, but you are a smart woman Eva, you could have figured it out but you didn't want to know, I just stayed out of it.
as Javier (accountant) shows, Eva wants the info on the auditor's that she asked him to get, aa, well, Armando is the president and he said no, so Eva takes the time to explain to him Mon-Sol, that she is just as much an equal president, that she is getting a divorce and breaking up the company, and she can see which side of the fence he is on, and adds Good fences make Good neighbors.
part 2
meanwhile none of the trucks are moving because they have no insurance, Eva's orders, to Armando's dismay, but she gives the green light over the PA system, they have gotten new insurance, (that's costing an arm and a leg)
Bobby waits to give Adriana a ride on his moto after school, but she reminds him they broke up, but we break up all the time he says, as she walks past him to the much more dashing Andy who she has seen naked, all of him, on his moto, and at home he's says he's going out later, would she like to come along, no my mother would never allow that, do you always do what your mother tells you, he says, I'll be leaving at 10 pm.
Evencio comes to work to tell Eva about Carmen (against Sofia's orders)
Eva rushes to the hospital and gets to see Carmen, we see some memories of them in younger years, I guess they never did get along, but Eva still loves her, asks her to return.
Sofia stops by to ask Armando for help, he tells her to get lost, as Marlene drops in complaining about losing her office, Armando throws out getting kicked out of his house, Javier shows up with his Eva problems, welcome to the club.
Soraya and Pancho visit the uncle, he looks bad, the guilt must be killing him, Pancho says, but I wanted to make him suffer Soraya says, and she has a plan, is it to take him home with them?
Armando and Marlene talk about Carmen, this is good Marlene says, one less thorn in our side, Armando, who at times does not seem like bad guy, is taken back, I've never seen this side of you, but this doesn't stop him from asking her out to dinner, Marlene likes this, but wanting to set the hook deeper, she says no, ask one of your floozies, Armando replies that his tastes have changed.
Eva leaving the hospital runs into Sofia, (the wise woman and the foolish girl), I think Eva gets it across that she understands what Sofia is going through, that she doesn't hate her.
Later that evening, Marlene drops by the big house with a bottle of wine to comfort her comadre (two faced perra) Eva spills on how tough the last couple of days have been, but she is alive, and has to be tough, to patch up her tires, start up the engine, and head on down the road of life (or something like that)
meanwhile Pablo has snuck into the accounting office with Javier's badge, Evencio is doing his walk through as nightwatchman, and hears something, but as he zero's in on Pablo, he is startled by something else...
Vivi you have excellent recall. Tks for a great recap. The comments on Turkish traditions was interesting, keep them coming. Was elated with the admission of Asu seeing Vural alive after Kerim left the scene. Can!t wait to see the role that Kerim's father will play. I am a little fuzzy on what transpired between Kerim's mom/dad in the reflection scene. Can you clear that up? The Yasaran clan have spies everywhere, now they are going after Meltem's dad. In spite of financial problems, they continue to find money to pay people. These people think that money can cure all evil.
Deb, what a pleasure to wake up this morning and find your extensive and delightful recap! I loved it! Many thanks. You seem to do humor so effortlessly. I especially chuckled over El Chivo "waiting in his unnoticeable red thunderbird convertible," and "Eva wants Pablo gone, but it seems it was easier getting in." And apparently yes, alas, you were the only one (except for Viewerville) who found it suspicious that Marlene and Alberto were together.
I hope you're wrong about Soraya's plan to take dear uncle Arnulfo home with her. ¡Ya basta!
While we're thinking about what will happen, I'll add that I'd love to see Fabiola and Diego provide a key clue to Marlene's undoing. Yeah, unlikely, but this is a telenovela, and schmaltz is a telenovela's life's blood.
Thanks deb! That was great. Fast moving and funny! I think you touched on every single detail of yet another action-packed epi. About Armando "who at times does not seem like bad guy..." That seems to be what Jorge Luis Pila does best. He did the same sort of "bemused about the vicissitudes of women" kind of waffling in Otra Piel. A dashing, and sometimes repentant gigolo. There are moments when the audience's collective heart just says "Awww". I'm warming to Pablo despite his goofy cock-eyed grin. There seems to be real chemistry there with Eva. As always, Telemundo's casting reveals more depth in the characters than I was used to over at Univision.
Part 1:
The gang at the restaurant is so excited about Asu/Hacer’s revelations about the night she saw Kerim leave a very alive Vural in the clearing, that they don’t notice how both she and Mustafa have become quiet and pensive after they revealed that the killer came by boat. They agree to go to the D.A. in Istanbul right now, for Asu to give her statement. Kadir calls the D.A. to make an appointment. Rahmi, Mukaddes and Mehmet stay at the restaurant, while Asu and Mustafa drive together, and Ebe, Fatma and Kadir drive together in Kadir’s car. As they pull off, sharp-eyed Rahmi spots Yasar spying on them. He tries to block Yasar as he drives off, then calls Ebe Nine to tell them that they are being followed by the Yasaran goon. Luckily, he delayed Yasar enough that he lost their cars, but Fatma and Kadir keep looking back all the same to see if they’re being followed.
In Mustafa’s car, the tension could be cut with a knife. Finally, Asu questions Mustafa about being out in the boat that night. He swears that he just went out for a short while, and she can ask any of the fishermen or his parents. He stops the car, as he berates her for even thinking he could be the killer. Fatma and Co stop their car too, and Fatma and Ebe Nine approach Mustafa’s car to see what’s going on. They mistakenly assume Asu is having second thoughts about testifying, and that Mustafa is arguing with her to do so. Asu and Mustafa clam up. Ebe gets in their car with them to make sure they drive to the D.A.’s office. They tell Mustafa about the Yasaran goon who was watching them.
While waiting for the D.A., Ebe tries to convince Asu to also amend her statement about Fatmagul in the rape case. Feeling like she’s being cornered and made into the bad guy, Asu threatens to leave. But Fatma begs her to stay. She doesn’t care about what Asu says about her in the rape case. She just wants her to tell the truth in THIS case and save Kerim. While Asu gives her statement, with Kadir by her side, Mustafa makes a strong play for Fatma. He wishes to turn back time to a year ago, and do everything differently. He tells her that she has him, and therefor has nothing to fear. Fatma tells him that she doesn’t need him, and they can’t turn back time. What’s done is done. All she can do is offer him thanks for what he’s doing now. They speak about the rape case, and bring up why he didn’t stop Asu from making her false statements. He says he knew nothing at all about it, until she testified, and that he was furious with Asu (not quite how it happened). Asu has just finished her statement, and overhears this. Mustafa offers his hand to Fatma as he and Asu take their leave. She accepts his hand only briefly.
In the parking lot, Asu lets Mustafa have it. She brings up her suspicions about his role in Vural’s death, and also curses him out for trying to make her look like the bad guy, while making himself look like the hero in front of Fatma. He’s just trying to get her back, now that Kerim is out of the way. She knows that this is the reason why he tried to keep her from speaking to Fatma, and then took the lead on revealing the truth to her the way he did. Mustafa, who becomes a better liar every day, hotly denies it all. Then he plays the ultimate mind game on Asu, and asks her if this is what she thinks of the man who was going to ask her to marry him? He claims he was out looking at wedding rings this morning because he planned to ask her to marry him. Asu immediately melts. They head home together, where Yasar is waiting outside. Mustafa, becoming cleverer each day, openly confronts Yasar and accuses HIM of killing Vural on behalf of the Yasaran, right in front of Asu.
After he lost the gang from Fatma’s restaurant, Yasar reports back to Erdogan. Erdogan tells Selim and Resat, and they begin to freak out about why Asu and Mustafa are meeting with Fatma and Co. They begin to think that Asu is changing her statements from the rape case, and panic. When they learn that it has to do with Vural’s murder case, and proof that Kerim didn’t do it, it just adds to their worry. Munir is summoned back early from his trip. The womenfolk, Perihan and Hilmiye, are even brought into the strategy meetings. When they first think Asu is changing her testimony about the rape case, Selim and Erdogan decide, if push comes to shove, they will lay the full blame of the rape on Vural. He’s dead anyway. Then when they all learn that Asu is testifying about Vural’s murder, and that Mustafa is accusing THEM of hiring a hit on Vural, they all worry about how to fix this. Their problems get worse when Leman and Semsi (there to take her home and to a clinic) overhear the last part of this conversation. They both lose it and go after Resat and the Yasaran boys. If it’s true that they had Vural killed, they will kill the Yasaran! They finally leave, broken, but with a new sense of purpose between them.
In jail, Kerim continues to be paranoid and cold towards his cellmates, instigated by the Yasaran spy masquerading as his friend. He even accuses them loudly of being Yasaran spies. They all think he’s crazy. The news about Asu’s testimony bolsters his mood, as do the daily letters from Fatma and the pot of forget-me-nots. He gets an unexpected visitor and is taken to the prison director’s office. When he sees his visitor, suddenly he is flooded with memories—the first is of the man he sees before him, disappearing out the door with a suitcase in hand, when he was a little boy. It’s Fahrettin Ilgaz, his father!
Fahrettin read about his arrest in the news, called up his old contacts in Ildir because he couldn’t believe it, and came from Australia as soon as he could to offer his help to his son. Kerim is hostile towards him and rejects his help. When the prison director tries to get him to be a bit more respectful of his father, Kerim tells him that his father died a long time ago and he doesn’t know this man, then leaves. When he gets back to his cell, the memories continue to wash over Kerim. He remembers finding his mother’s lifeless body, after she hanged herself (so much trauma for a little boy!). He remembers shortly after that, living with Ebe Nine and her mother, and Ebe Nine comforting him and bringing him back to the bed they shared when he sat up at night crying, waiting for his father to return for him (he thought his father was dead, Ebe told him he would return for him), then later cutting his father out of his photos. He tries to hide his tears from his cellmates. He tries to start a letter to his father, but is unable to get past the greeting line. When he leaves his cell, his “friend” (Yasaran spy) snoops and reads what he’s written. The other prisoners threaten to tell Kerim.
Fahrettin calls Ebe Nine and tells her he’s in Turkey and visited Kerim. Fatma and Kadir witness the call. Fahrettin will be in Istanbul the next day and wants to meet with Meryem/Ebe Nine. Ebe Nine is shaken by the call. Fatma wants no part of anything that’s going to hurt/upset Kerim. Kadir offers to go with her, but Ebe says she has to do this alone. Through a series of flashbacks that Fahr has while he’s visiting the grave of Enise (Kerim’s mom) in Ildir, and that Ebe Nine has, we learn the truth of what happened between Fahr and Enise. We learn even more when Eben Nine meets Fahr at a café the next day. Fatmagul watches them from a distance.
Fahr was Enise’s father’s choice of husband for her. She was in love with another man at the time, but her father hated him, threatened his life, and Enise married Fahr just to keep this man safe from her father. Her first love then killed himself, and Enise always held all of this against Fahr. Fahr loved her, but she always despised him. (Sound familiar?) Eleven years, and one small son, later, Fahr had finally had enough. He had gotten a visa to Australia and an opportunity to start a new life in a new country. He wanted him, Enise and Kerim to start a new life there together. Enise refused to go—told him to go and take Kerim with him. He explains to Ebe: “She didn’t love me. She hated me with all her heart. She always cried for her love. I was punishing her when I left. I thought she’d come with me. I left my son because my wife left me.”
Fahrettin then tries to blame Ebe and her mom for the rupture between him and Kerim. He thinks they should have told Kerim the truth about the relationship between him and Enise, and that she was the one who drove/sent him away. (Hey buddy, that doesn’t change the fact that you left, and NEVER came back!) Ebe wants to know just how she could have explained that to a little boy, whose mother had just committed suicide? “I was there. I cared for him. Wiped his tears…He needed to cling to something, and that was the dream of his mother.” Later, Ebe goes home and takes a framed photo of herself and Kerim out of his keepsake box. Behind the photo is an old, yellowed letter. She holds the letter to herself and cries.
The days and weeks go by. The restaurant is bustling. Fatma takes her exams and thinks she did well. She and Kerim write each other each day, and we hear snippets of their letters—family updates, including Fahr, the business, exams, his case and the investigation, and of course words of love and encouragement. Finally, they get the news that the trial date has finally be set. It’s in a week!
Mustafa and Asu, meanwhile, have also settled into a domestic routine. But Mustafa seems to be getting more nervous and jumpy. Asu watches him as he tosses, sweats and mumbles in his sleep. He has a moment of genuine honesty with her, and cries is her arms as he tells her: “There’s an emptiness inside me. So large that I don’t know what to do…I feel I’m going crazy…Please forgive me.” Clearly, something is weighing on his mind and heart. Asu follows him to the cemetery, and watches as he cries and prays over Vural’s grave. The truth dawns on her again. She stumbles backwards and Mustafa spots her. She looks at him like she’s seeing him for the first time and says: “You did it!”
-End of episode.
Salim and Erdogans plan to blame the dead guy is ludicrus. Fatma and Kerim are very much alive and can I D them and wont be bought off. What a hairbrained idea.
Fahrentin has his work cut out for him. Regardless of his failed relationship with his wife...it was he who walked away and didnt return for his son. Ebe did the right thing by giving a grieving child hope. How was she to know his father wouldnt return.
Nett
Nett- ITA with your whole comment. Selim and Erdogan are arrogant idiots.
Fahr has no right to reproach Ebe Nine anything. He should be kissing her feet for taking in his child, who is not related to her, and raising him and loving him. If he wanted Kerim to know about/understand the drama between him and Enise, he should have come back from Australia long ago and told Kerim himself.
SpanProf, what was your workaround for seeing the entire capítulo on Telemundo? If you'd rather reply via email, you could send a message to

Thanks so much, deb, you are one funny person! Loved the unnoticeable car! And that only we veteran TN watchers thought it was odd that the sleazy lawyer who’s supposed to be representing Eva was at Marlene’s house.
I was thinking about Doña Bárbara last night. Both Edith González and Arap Bethke were in that one. I wondered if they cast Arap because he was in love with a woman older than himself in DB. Maybe Edith liked working with him years ago and influenced his hiring as the galán.
I also think Edith is much better at portraying strength than weakness. The first couple of days and right after she found out about Armando’s infidelity with her niece, I wasn’t feeling the novela all that much.
Now she’s got that steely look in her eyes and she’s kicking you know what and taking names. It seems a better fit for her skills. I absolutely loved her moving Marlene’s stuff out and telling her she asked her nicely the day before and it didn’t happen. I also loved her reaming the crooked accountant or whatever that weasel is who is in on Armando’s fake robberies.
Of course they had to go with Adriana ignoring her mother’s insistence she stay away from Andy. I guess that’s what teenagers do. But I’m not liking that kid very much. Even when she was sympathizing with her mother, her acting was poor. Guess I just don’t like petulant teenagers.
I'll post this on the newer page as well.
Thank you for the recap Vivi. If you do the recaps from memory I tip my hat to you lady. Bravo. Up until this episode we never saw Fatma as happy as she was and they didn't(Kerim and Her) meet in this episode, and it was full of love,we saw more love than any other one. This is because kerim is not here! it's weird to say that, but weI think when he is beside her she is always afraid to show him her love because she is afraid of what will happen next but in letters she goes for it. Granted a lot of time has passed and she learned to trust Kerim but Fatma is not even near ready to go behond holding hands and a few quick hugs, as she should be anyway. It is way too soon for anything else. I just love the phone call scene, Fatma's happiness was so genuine, and was showing. Kerim's mom did not love him enough to live for him, sad and his dad is wrong not to have come back. Meryem is hiding something about the content of that letter. I wonder why in Spanish dubbing they call her "Ebe Nine" at all times not "hermana" In the Turkish version no one calls her Ebe Nine after, say, the first few episodes. They called her " Meryem abla" or just "abla" which is "Big sister Meryem and big sister" even Kerim. Anyhoo, great episode and greater recap.
