TELEMUNDO Y MÁS (#1): Eva la Trailera, La Esclava Blanca, El Señor de los Cielos #4, Secretos, and ¿Quién es Quién?: Week of April 25, 2016
Labels: esclava, eva-la-t, quien, secretos, senor4, telemundo
Caught up with the episodes over the weekend. I'll likely stick around, although my recapping efforts are still directed toward Eva la Trailera.
The cruelty is hard to take. But here is my view: If enslaved people had to endure these horrible things, then why should we look away from what I'm certain are accurate representations of the violence.
Here is what a historian in Colombia had to say:
[Don't have time to translate it.]
The cast is excellent. The young actors are very good, both the white child and the black child, who plays her childhood sweetheart. There are some clichés. The brutal overseer is too over the top for my taste. And his motivations are odd. He saved the white child twice, once by letting her be borne away by her nannie and husband and again by giving up looking for her. But his motivation for the cruelty toward Sara is very odd. He hates her for betraying his boss, Nicolás, but it wasn't clear to me why he'd have such loyalty to a man who certainly didn't treat HIM very well.
Another cliché for me was the harsh mother superior of the convent to which Victoria is sent by the kindly priest in Colombia. And, of course, the kindly nun who takes her under her wing. I thought the scenes I the convent were well acted by the girl portraying Victoria. She was good at showing how all this talk about El Señor was very confusing to her. And being defiant about getting back the necklace given her by her mother. Of course she'd be defiant. Her upbringing never taught her to be subservient. And, I expect the number of harsh Spaniards in the novela probably reflects an attitude toward the "masters" in every country colonized by a European power. We still to this day see snobby, overbearing English people once in a while in both movies and television productions.
Since I spent this weekend trying to catch up on the many episodes of Hotel I missed, I did not get to catch up with this one. I do still hope/intend to do so. Thank you novelera and Juanita for keeping the ball rolling on this tn.
Lo de Viernes Pablo suggests to Luis that maybe what happened to Pancho and Soraya wasn’t an accident. We again see the narcos threatening Andy and his later telling La Alacrana he wants half of the money she’s getting. Robert and Cinthia wonder what will happen if Soraya wakes up and remembers what happened. Pablo makes another big mistake by getting into bed with Betty and comforting her. We see Soraya calling Luis Pancho and behaving like a young girl.
Soraya laughs when Luis [from now on I’m calling him Luisbo as a combination of his former and current names] says he’s her son, thinking he's joking. She asks him to have her friends: Berta, Federica, Eva, Adriana and Camila leave. It bothers her the way they look at her. It appears she’s reverted in time to when she and Pancho were novios.
Martín lectures Pablo about having slept with Betty, even though Pablo has assured him it wasn’t “biblical”.
Elsa arrives at Armando’s house with a gay cliché, the wedding planner. Armando throws them out.
La Alacrana overhears Eva talking with the Soler gang [all those women and girls] about Soraya forgetting everything. Camila puts her foot in her mouth, calling Soraya crazy.
In her room Soraya smiles at the doctor examining her when he calls her Señora. She tells him she’s not old enough nor is she married. We get some scenes of the usual Telenovela Medicine [thanks, Juanita!] conversations by the doctors to the friends of the patient. “We don’t know what’s going on yet. We have to perform a lot more tests, yada yada.”
Pablo arrives because Luisbo called him. He wants to speak with Eva alone, saying she was the one who said they’d be friends. Eva: pues, amigo el ratón del queso (Right, the mouse is the friend of the cheese! I love this expression!) When they walk off Federica says that la hoguera (the bonfire) is still smoldering for those two.
Eva tells Pablo in the stereotypical hospital coffee shop about how Soraya confuses Luisbo with Pancho. He tells her what Soraya said the first time she awoke about someone trying to kill them.
Evencio tells Martín how well the first run of Soler e Hijas went. Evencio is trying to give Martín some money for household expenses when Betty shows up with her usual bitter two cents. Evencio has said something about not wanting to be un mantenido (a person who doesn’t pay his way). Betty takes this as a dig against her. Evencio: Él que se rasca es porque algo le pica. [One who scratches is because something is biting him; or she wouldn’t react that way to mantenido if she didn’t realize she deserved it.]
Pablo tells Eva Virginia is about to be released. Eva embraces him and te amo slips out. [I’m with Deb; I’ll believe it when Virginia walks out of there.]
Marlene tells Cinthia that Soraya doesn’t remember anything.
Martín is cooking dinner. JJ arrives, and Martín tells him they have to work tonight. JJ is as amusing as always. He says he’s going to have to appeal to the union for private detectives for having to work excessive hours. Martín leaves the dinner half done. Betty is shocked, shocked that they aren’t going to cook her dinner. They leave. Betty makes an effort. She pours about a cup of oil into the frying pan and catches the kitchen on fire!
The Soler gang prepares to leave the hospital but Camila offers to stay with Eva. Adriana doesn’t miss a beat and announces that Camila is staying to get close to Luisbo. She tells her mother that this girl isn’t anything like the sweet one she described. She says to Camila that she shouldn’t be so low as to go after her ex. Camila expects Eva to side with her. But Eva tells her she doesn’t recognize her any more and that what Adriana said is the truth!
Andy gets a big check from his sister and announces he knows just how he’s going to spend it.
Martín and JJ take photos of the straying husband and his lover.
Marlene writes another big check to the wedding planner. She wants to throw a big bash to throw it in the face of the nacos. [Where does she get all this money? Is she embezzling it out of Mon-Sol?]
The doctors tell Luisbo that he should not tell Soraya that he’s not Pancho. Luisbo, very disturbed: ¿Y qué si se da por besarme? Qué hago? (And what if she starts to kiss me? What do I do then>) Luisbo in an impassioned scene explains to Eva what he’s gone through. His parents aren’t really his parents. His parents are some strange people he doesn’t know. It turns out they’re wonderful people. Just when he’s giving his heart to them, life takes them from him. Eva tells him he has to choose whether to live on the dark side or in the light. She tells him he can help his mother reconstruct her life.
Andy’s big plan is to show up at Eva’s house looking for Adriana. [What’s this about? Adriana doesn’t have money any more. He never loved her. I guess he just can’t stand her having rejected him.]
Luisbo comforts Soraya. She’s objecting to being called Sorayita. She thinks that Eva is the woman who was going to give her a job in Tijuana. Eva agrees with her and says she’ll give her the work. But Soraya says she won’t be able to accept because she’s going with Pancho pa’l Gabacho (to white America). She tells him about the baby and that her name is Purificación. Luisbo says he’s happy about the baby, but can’t keep it up. He runs out of the room.
Evencio shows up at Mon-Sol wanting to get his belongings out of the locker he used there.
Camila, calling him Lucho, approaches Luisbo in the waiting room, offering friendship. He sees right through this and tells her to stop it. He tells her flat out that she doesn’t interest him. Plus his life is complicated enough without her messing with him.
Evencio thanks Armando for letting him pick up his stuff. Armando pretends to think they’re friends. Evencio isn’t buying this. He reminds Armando that he treated him with disdain and used him to do his dirty work. Armando offers him a drink. Evencio tells him that he doesn’t drink any more.
Armando is a complete jerk, scornfully asking Evencio if he’s going to one of those places where you sit in a circle and talk. Evencio says he hasn’t gone to AA yet, but he plans to. He tells Armando that Eva has given him a great opportunity. Armando shows what he’s after, asking Evencio who hired them. Evencio: “What, you thought this idiot would spill the beans? I won’t betray my sister-in-law. She’s a great person and will rise to the top again. Soon she’ll overtake Mon-Sol. And, if you want some advice, don’t drink so much. It’s not good for you.”
Camila comes home to Eva’s house. Andy is perched on the side of a fancy convertible and tries to flirt with her. Her response: ¡Púdrete! [But I’m worried about Camila getting coerced by him into something bad.] Inside the house Adriana tells Federica that it’s horrible to be poor. Federica says she understands. Adri goes outside for a breath of fresh air and finds Andy there, calling her esposita [Hasn’t the divorce gone through yet?]

Muchísimas gracias, novelera, for this magnificent recap. I loved it all, including your insightful asides and your translating some Spanish phrases that I didn't quite understand. You're right: this novela abounds in cliches, and that was especially evident in this episode. I would have hoped that in today's world they wouldn't have made the wedding planner so over the top, but no. Ditto the doctor's words and the hospital cafeteria. I guess they've got only one cafeteria set, so they use it each time there's a hospital (and there's almost always a hospital).
I was sure that we'd also see Evencio give in to drink, but to my surprise and delight, he remained strong. Bravo, Evencio! And while Evencio is at Mon-Sol, the setting triggers his memory and he recalls Armando's having given him the bottle of tequila, and he now realizes that it was probably to make him drunk and thus unaware of what was happening.
I couldn't believe that Betty could have spent so many of her adult years on her own and not known the first thing about anything to do with a kitchen. I like SpanProf's explanation!
I was very nervous when JJ went off to get more photos. I can't imagine why he would need them, given how many he already has taken. I feared that he would get caught and his camera taken/destroyed. Do we know whether he and his camera emerged unscathed?
I for one am not nervous about something bad happening to Camila. My only concern is that she could become an ally of Andy against Adriana.
Gracias novelera! You knocked that one out of the park. A lot of action and you covered every detail. Great vocab & dichos. I'm with Juanita: they really played with us a bit in that Evencio / Armando scene. When they closed in on that tantalizing glass of booze, I was on the edge of my seat yelling at the TV "don't do it!!!" And lo & behold, he didn't. I was so proud. Glad Evencio's beginning to recover some of those brain cells.
As for Camila, I'm wondering how bad she really is. After all, she has reason to be loyal to Eva and Eva's judgement is pretty shrewd. Could she be a red herring? I was pleased that she put off Andy's advances with her tough prison demeanor. Is it possible she could use her smarts to size up the situation and end up doing some good, thereby winning back her fans and vindicating Eva for rescuing her? I guess when the eyeliner disappears, we'll find out.
The "let's not tell Soraya the truth" cliché almost had me turning off the TV. This is the lowest! Bobby's supposed to pretend to be his mother's "novio"???? At least he's responding with righteous indignation. What I don't get is everybody else's attitude and that includes Eva's.
I actually didn't mind the gay wedding planner cliché. I found him adorable. I guess I know too many people like that to take offense.
And Betty trying to burn down the kitchen? Was that supposed to be comedy? And why did they leave us hanging? By the time they get back to it, there'll be no house left. SpanProf you are so right about not pouring water on a grease fire. It really pointed up how sheltered & inexperienced is our Betty!
Oh, and thank you deb for the info about “Sin Senos Sí Hay Paraíso”. I don't know how you do it. I can barely find out the schedule for shows I'm watching, let alone upcoming new series.
Wow, LXV, I'm impressed! You figured out how to get the TV to obey you! :-)
I wasn't surprised that everyone but Bobby/Luis did what the doctor recommended re playing along with Soraya and not yet telling her the truth. In situations like that, one often assumes that the doctor speaks from knowledge and experience, and that not following his recommendation might well cause harm to the patient. In Soraya's very fragile state, I don't think she's ready to be contradicted and confronted with the truth. Especially the truth about Pancho (if Bobby/Luis isn't Pancho, where is Pancho?).
Also, I want to add my thanks to deb for all the information about upcoming telenovelas. I often fail to comment on this, but I'm always interested and grateful.
I may have not expressed myself well re Camila. I didn't think about anything happening TO her. I was thinking she might, for spite, join forces with Andy against Adriana, maybe hoping to keep her rival tied to the cad to leave the field open for her. But Luisbo didn't cite his feelings for Adriana when he basically told her to get lost. He just said she didn't attract him at all.
Back to the show, the nuns were clichés but alas, I have known cruel nuns in my youth so I have no problems with the portrayal. Nicolas is pound scum along with his mother. That priest is a cum too for blessing the field while looking at people being tortured and keep going like hey another day of pure cruelty but what else is new? Keep your saintly act sir I don't want none of it. I love Victoria and her spunk. By the way, last night was the final in Colombia.
Thanks for your comment, Romy. I agree that the violence against the people is very hard to take. I guess I didn't really pay attention went on when the priest was blessing the field. I'm still thinking he's not that bad of a guy. He heard the overseer's confession about burning up Victoria's parents and knew the baby had survived. So he sent her to Spain (presumably paying her passage) to save her from Nicolás and the overseer (can't remember his name).
Last night Victoria pointed out to her friend that the nuns were making big bucks selling their embroidered items but giving them a pittance. Are they supposed to be novices? They dress like that. The mother superior appears to be planning to keep Victoria there forever since her embroidery is so good! She made a sarcastic remark last night about Victoria becoming a savage again if she went back to Colombia.
The episode begins with Andy accosting Adriana as she comes out of the house. Hello, little wife, he says. Do you want to go for a ride in my new car? Adriana tells him to get lost. He grabs her arm and tells her to remember that the baby she has inside her is his, and if she doesn't want him to take it from her after it's born, she should behave herself. She tries to break free of him, and they struggle. Suddenly Evencio comes out of the house brandishing a crowbar and orders Andy to let her go or he'll break his face...or his car. He approaches the car, crowbar in hand. Andy releases Adri, gets into the car, and drives off. Bertha and Federica come out and praise Evencio. "My hero," proclaims Bertha.
At the prison, the prison director expresses his gratitude to Pablo for helping to uncover the drug dealing. Virginia approaches and thanks Pablo and Martin. The prison director tells her that he has sent documentation to the prosecutor. He hasn't heard back yet, but he thinks there's a 95% chance that Virginia will soon be released conditionally. She is ecstatic. [I worry about the other 5%.]
Eva is with Soraya at the hospital. Soraya still remembers nothing of the past twenty years. She asks Eva why Pancho is taking so long to return. Is he frightened about the baby? Is he angry? Eva assures her that Pancho is not angry, that he has gone to seek better work now that there will be three of them. Soraya offers to tell Eva about her history with Pancho, her story of love. She and Pancho had known each other from a very young age, but he declared himself when she was 14. Now she's 16, almost 17. He's a little older. Her name is Purificación. She goes on to tell her more about the relationship. She also says that she feels as if she has known Eva before. Eva replies that she, too, feels as if she has known Soraya a long time, almost all her life. Eva tells her to call her "Evis" and to use "tu." She also tells Soraya that she has to leave and that Soraya has to rest. For the baby? asks Soraya. Yes, for the baby. Eva leaves, and Soraya tells the baby in utero that they have a new friend, Evis.
Luis comes to the Monteverdes' house. Cinthia asks how his other mother is. She's crazy, he replies somewhat bitterly, crazier than ever. She remembers nothing, she thinks her name is Purificación, she thinks that I'm her husband, and that she's pregnant with my baby. I can't stand it! Luis gets up and leaves.
Federica and Bertha bemoan the fact that they're at the mercy of abusers: yesterday, Armando, today Andy. They agree that they need a man around the house.
The man they most likely have in mind, Evencio, is walking down the street. My imagination of disaster is working overtime. I fully expect that he'll be attacked again by one of Andy's goons. Instead, he sees ahead of him the guard from Mon-Sol who gave him the bottle of tequila. He now clearly remembers the scene, and that the guy said it was a birthday present from Armando. He goes to tell Pablo and Martin about this.
Eva sees Fabi and Adriana come into the room. Fabi tells her that she likes this new house. Adri, however, still upset about her encounter with Andy, says she doesn't like the house nor much of anything else.
Luis comes to see Soraya. "Mi Pancho, I missed you," says Soraya. "How handsome you are, mi amor" she continues. "Are you angry with me?" Luis has decided to follow the doctor's advice. "No, mi Purita," he replies, "I'm not angry." Soraya speaks of Pancho's caresses, and how he awakened her love. "You remember?" she asks Luis. "Did you feel something like this?" It must have been extremely awkward for Luis, but he finds a way to respond somewhat truthfully: "Yes, with you I understood what true love is" (Yo contigo entendí lo que era el verdadero amor).
At Pablo's, Betty tells everyone about the disaster in the kitchen. "I told you I can't cook," she says. OK, says Martin, you can't cook. At least nothing serious happened. Suddenly Evencio bursts in to say that he spotted the guy who gave him the bottle of tequila, and the guy had said it was from Armando. Evencio realizes that this means Armando was complicit in Sofia's death. Martin sees the importance of what Evencio is saying, and he asks, "Armando, who demoted you from being a driver because of your alcoholism, gave you a bottle of tequila?" Pablo asks Betty how she would respond to this new evidence if she were the prosecutor. She first acknowledges that if the guardia says that Armando gave him the bottle of tequila for Evencio, we have a place to start. But foot-in-mouth Betty can't leave it at that. She tells Evencio that even though he has stopped drinking, he is still an alcoholic, and so his testimony is worthless. Evencio is angry, and he leaves. "Don't look at me," Betty tells the others. "It's not my fault."
Armando returns home. He is told that Marlene went out with Elsa and left this for him. "This" turns out to be a fancy invitation to his wedding with Marlene. He's not pleased. Eva, too, receives one. She doesn't show much emotion. Adriana asks her how she can be so calm. Eva tells her that "the man who is getting married to Marlene has nothing to do with the man that I was once in love with. This man has nothing to do with me. I can't feel anger at a person I don't know." After Adri goes to bed, Bertha and Federica ask Eva how she really feels about Armando's infamy. Eva replies that he and Marlene are two of a kind (son tal para cual).
Armando, meanwhile, is thinking "How am I going to marry this....?" Marlene returns, gloating about their upcoming wedding. "Nuestro amor deserves an elegant (con todo lo alto) celebration," she declares. Armando is having none of this. "Nuestro amor--por favor" he scornfully replies. "We know perfectly well why we are getting married." Marlene ignores his cynicism and continues: "My wedding is going to be unforgettable. And like it or not," she continues, "you're going to marry a princess. And you're going to behave like a prince." Marlene then turns on the sex and tells him that she's going to do everything he likes. But Armando is remembering Eva in a sexy nightgown. As Marlene kisses him all over, he lies in bed with his eyes open, staring into space.
Martin advises Pablo to tell Eva about Evencio's new evidence. "Every time you fail to tell her, she finds out and things go badly." But Pablo disagrees. "Eva wants to think that the father of her children is not a monster. She hates being wrong." [Pablo, you dummy! When are you going to learn?]
Evencio comes to Eva's and tells everyone that he can't live at the Contreras house. "Betty drives me crazy." He offers to sleep on a sofa, and also offers money. The women welcome him and laugh at his offers. Of course, the next morning, Pablo comes by to get Evencio to go with him on his investigations. Evencio starts to explain what the investigation is about, but Dummy Pablo cuts him off and rushes him out of the house. Eva, of course, wonders what they're hiding.
Eva and Federica go to the prison to greet Virginia upon her release. Camila can't go because she's job hunting and has an interview (I think). I fully expected someone to come out to tell Eva and Federica why Virginia would not be released after all, but my imagination of disaster again proved unreliable. Virginia did have to walk by Rebeca on her way out and hear Rebeca curse her and tell her that if she gets out, she'll kill her, but Virginia nonetheless does succeed in leaving the prison, where she is warmly greeted by Eva and Federica.
Pablo and Evencio go to Mon-Sol, where Evencio tries to get an address and phone number for Carlos Torres, the guardia who gave him the tequila bottle. He's not successful, but at the last minute they spot Marta, a friend of Eva's who works at Mon-Sol. Evencio sprays some mouthwash and then goes to speak with Marta. When Marta finds out that the information is for Eva, she offers to find out what she can and let Evencio know. Of course, Marlene the Omnipresent drives by just as Evencio and Marta are talking. After Evencio leaves, Marlene asks Marta to come to her office. "What did Evencio and Pablo Contreras want?" she asks Marta. "If you don't tell me, I'll fire you. You decide." [Marta has until the next episode to do so.]
Many thanks, SpanProf, for your kind words and your very astute comments. I too was amused that Andy was motivated more by threats to his car rather than threats to himself. (Then again, the car undoubtedly is more worth saving than he is.)
I found it funny that Evencio sprays mouthwash before going to talk to Marta. Perhaps that's just force of habit from all his years of drinking, though it does seem to indicate that he finds Marta attractive. I do hope he winds up with someone good at the end.
The character who probably impressed me most in last night's episode is Luis. In the previous episode and at the start of this one, we see him really upset and put off by Soraya's state, especially her mistaking him for Pancho. But as the episode continues, we see him rise to the occasion and play along with Soraya, even though the intimate details she was revealing must have been very difficult for Luis to hear. He even manages to respond in a way that not only satisfies Soraya but actually is true: through her (and Pancho) he has come to understand what true love is. And though I didn't include it in the recap, I was also impressed with his response when the two nurses or nursing assistants came to tell him that Soraya had been given a sedative that would make her sleep through the night. They suggested that therefore Luis needn't stay, but he said he didn't want to leave her because she might wake up and be upset that he wasn't there. He certainly is his father's son.
terrrific recap Juanita!
(I was busy last night and am just getting around to watching)
so Soraya has settled in to a safe place in her past, young and in love, before the tables all turned on her. I think once she feels safe she'll be ready to move on, and I agree with Eva, what a loving person she is.
I hope Eva follows through with having Pablo get a restraining order against Andy.
I have no idea why Luis went back to the Monteverde casa, but it didn't take him long to realize his mistake at being around these people.
Evencio is my hero as well, this guy totally lost everything (more than the leads) and yet he is walking his way out of it.
wow, for a moment I thought Betty was going to step up and help, maybe even agree that Eva was innocent, but as usual, she never fails to disappoint.
and once again Armando chooses sex over reason.
Marlene writes some pretty good checks if Andy can go out and buy a car, no wonder the company is going down the drain.
Thanks, Juanita. Gangbusters recap! And I agree that Luis is definitely showing himself as his father’s son. Soraya needs his affection, and he’s being terrific about overcoming his doubts.
That scene with Virginia was weird. She’s walking by and Rebeca and Carmen are behind some glass like zoo animals cursing and threatening her. ¿Qué?
They sure have made Armando a dog, haven’t they? He is approaching actual hatred for Marlene because she’s forcing him to marry her, but he can’t keep zipped up ever.
More and more impressed with Edith González every episode. The scene with Soraya was so touching. Soraya said something about Eva made her think she’d seen her (or was it known her) before. I’m not sure, but I thought Soraya came up with “Evis” on her own and Eva smiled happily to hear her old nickname.
I was worried about Betty being in the room when Evencio told the Contreras Crew about having seen the guy who gave him the tequila. But I guess the writers are going with her being realistic. There’s no more reason to be in cahoots with Marlene since Eva has been found not guilty.
I AM wondering where everyone is going to sleep at what looks like a regular 3 bedroom ranch house in LA. They’ve added Virginia and Evencio to the already crowded place.
"confirmed the production kick off of its new original production “Silvana Sin Lana,” starring Carlos Ponce, Maritza Rodriguez"
"an original story"
"Chivis Rivapalacios de Villaseñor (Maritza Rodriguez), a wealthy woman happily devoted to raising her three daughters. However, fate takes an unexpected turn, forcing her to give up her life of luxury and go to work for the first time in order to support her family without the help of a man."
"Manuel Gallardo (Carlos Ponce) a widower with four children who works hard selling fish for a living. Even though Manuel promised his children that he would never marry again and has learned to be happy by himself, his promise will be put to the test when “Chivis” moves in next door and challenges all of his prejudices towards rich people."
"Adriana Barraza (the mother Irene in "Dueños del Paraíso") plays Trinidad “Trini” Altamirano de Rivapalacios, mother to “Chivis,” and the judgmental grandmother of the Villaseñor sisters. In denial of her new economic situation, she will struggle to accept her family’s new lifestyle and will arrive to her new neighborhood thinking she can boss around its residents."

can't wait for Victoria to arrive in Santa Marta as a marquesa, but wait, will she have to marry Nicolas who has changed his crops over to Cocao but his handshake deal is not being honored by the sex-gone-wild widow, or will Miguel and the gang kidnap her first and hold her for ransom?
Thanks, deb, for your comments. That's great news that the show is 61 episodes. I really, really like the shorter ones: Like La Reina del Sur and La Mariposa.
Yes, Victoria's arrival in Santa Marta should be VERY interesting. I loved how they developed her plot to get on that ship. We knew they weren't going to send her to the French alps to be a nun! I was really shocked that the hierarchy of the convent appeared to be able to force people to become nuns. I always thought one had to choose it, although I'm sure plenty of people "signed up" because they were poor and had no other way to feed themselves.
It appears that Miguel's move to the dark side is over. He still wants freedom, but I don't think he plans any more highway robberies. It was awful, and I'm sure true, that the hacendados felt free to ignore the part of the Colombian law that freed slaves at the age of 18.
I got a big kick out of the way that beautiful woman (can't remember her name) turned the tables on Nicolás. He was so sure she'd a) marry him or b) give him all the cacao business.
Many thanks, deb for your kind words about the recap and your on-target comments. I especially loved your remark about Soraya's having settled in to a safe place, and the likelihood of her moving on once she truly feels safe.
I too was surprised that Luis returned to the Monteverdes, even briefly, but I guess it makes sense. He has, at least for now, lost both of his beloved birth parents, and I think he may have wanted a parental presence at this incredibly awful time. But it didn't take long for him to realize he wasn't going to find what he needed at the Monteverdes.
Thanks, too, for all the very interesting information about what's happening in the telenovela world. I'm glad to hear that La Esclava Blanca may be only 61 episodes. I tend to prefer short ones. My all-time favorite, La Reina del Sur, was also quite short.
ah, cacao! (sometimes spelled cocao)
(from various sources)
"a small tropical American evergreen tree having leathery, ellipsoid, ten-ribbed fruits"
"cacao beans are found inside the “fruit” of the tree, in football-sized pods"
"after the beans are cleaned, roasted and processed, they are called “cocoa.”"
"Cocao beans, believed to be first discovered in South America by the Olmec Indians around 1500 B.C., are found in the center of the cocao fruit. The yellow, green or violet pods are pulled from the trunk of the cocao tree and the beans are scooped out. Once the beans are fermented and dried, they are cleaned, roasted and hulled. The shells of the bean are removed and the remaining contents, or “nibs,” are blended like coffee beans to produce different colors and flavors.
Nibs are then ground until the cocao butter is released. Heat from the grinding process causes this mixture of cocao butter and finely ground nibs to melt and form a free-flowing substance known as chocolate liquor. From there, different varieties of chocolate are produced."
Muchas gracias, novelera, for your kind assessment of the recap and your insightful comments. I loved your comparing Armando to a dog, although I think even a dog may have more self-control than Armando seems to possess.
BTW, I think you're right about Soraya coming up with "Evis" on her own. When she then called Eva "Doña Evis" Eva asked her to drop the "Doña" and just call her Evis. But the name first came from Soraya.
part 1
(and the intro no longer has any lyrics),
Marlene quizzes Marta, spill or your fired, she does, and Marlene forbids her to give Pablo information on Carlos, and the rest of the guards, and checks him out herself, ah, the guard that gave Evencio the Tequila, and hands the file to Andy, you find him first, this guy could unravel the web of deceit I put together.
Marta calls Evencio and tips them Marlene is on to them, Pablo thinks Carlos is in danger, we better find him, takes JJ a while to narrow down the address from the internet, they're off.
but Andy arrives first, offering Carlos a job, lets go for a ride he says, Carlos is impressed with the car, the ride of your life, Andy adds.
Luis spends some time with Soraya, being loving but dodging the husband bit the best he can.
later Luis meets with Damian, time to meet with the stockholders as the new owner, as Damian edges him on and to the meeting, where he presents himself, he is not Pancho but he is willing to learn.
a week passes
as Eva and Evencio are on the road,
Luis is trying to learn the ropes at PanchoPan
Martin comforts the wife client with the cheating husband
Marlene makes wedding plans as Armando avoids it all,
Pablo cares for Betty,
Camila is working at a food place,
and Luis says he just can't do this, run PanchoPan, but Damian is by his side, keeping him going, when Luis gets a call, it's the hospital, and Soraya, he's off,
and Pablo has not been able to find Carlos, starts thinking he may be dead.
Eva arrives home, Marlene/Armando's wedding is today, she misses Pablo, Virginia talks her into going to see him, but Pablo is at the police station putting up his case about Armando giving Evencio the tequila, as Eva walks in, oh no, she loses it, (who would have thought) you've known this for a week and you didn't tell me, she never wants to see him again (have we heard this before) he grabs her when she tries to leave and she kicks him in the privates (does this mean no sex tonight and I guess we're past the slapping)
can you see why I didn't want to tell her, Pablo says, as he somehow manages to follow her for part two, trying to stop her from doing something stupid.
Adri is sad, and her rival Cami in kind of a crude way, shows her good side as she gets the "preppy girl" to vent, it's about her dad's wedding today, he's marrying that witch that put Eva in prison, Adri just wants to go there and make a scene, Cami adds, your dad's a jerk, I would burn the house down, and they do this bonding thing where they plot to ruin Marlene's dress and Adri is out the door, are you coming, Cami says she's a little tired, but it's a joke, no way is she going to miss this.
part 2
at the wedding in the big house, Armando in a tux still looks like he is trying to avoid all this, the maids are eating cherries, oh and here comes the bride down the big stairs in her $10,000 dress,
Luis arrives at the hospital, but where is Soraya, ah, she's hiding in the cupboard, Luis slowly opens the door, get in here before Arnulfo sees us, he's going to take the baby, she says, but Luis coaxes her out of there, comforts her, (and she seems to be moving forward in time) as she realizes he has already taken the baby, and now he'll sell her to those people, as Luis patiently takes it all in, promises her that she will see her son again, but he will hate me for giving him away, she says, no, Luis says, he will adore you, (wow, Bobby has a front row seat on his early life) and as he calms her down, the nurse gives her a sedative, but who do we see in the doorway, it's Robert, who mockingly calls his son Pancho.
Armando says Marlene does look very good, (or was that sexy) only good she says, I look spectacular, and it's off to find the notary for the ceremony, and here come the accepto's when who's that crashing through the front door, it's Eva, coming at Armando calling him a murderer, confess to it, Armando saying what good would that do, and as she lunges at Marlene who she blames for everything, Armando holds her back, but wait who is that crashing through the front door now, it's Pablo, grabbing Eva and dragging her back screaming, this could get ugly but Elsa arrives with security to break it up, but not before Adri and Cami hear it all, but how did Eva find out, Armando asks, later, Marlene says.
Adri runs out thinking her dad is a murderer, Cami is disappointed they didn't get to use the spray paint on Marlene's dress, but comforts her, we were a perfect family Adri says, my dad was a little dumb, but he really loved us, and Armando arrives trying to salvage what he can, he swears he is not a murderer, he had nothing to do with Sofia or Carmen's deaths,
as Andy comforts Marlene, Eva getting the best of you lately?
Eva stomps home, tells the girls to not let Pablo in, and goes to her room (hmm, lots of floor space here for even more guests) and remembers back when they got the big house, a birthday party for Fabi, with the family around Evencio, Carmen, Sofia, Adri, with Armando being so loving, saying this was going to be forever.
Luis is breaking down with all the chaos around him, Pancho, Soraya, the business on the verge of bankruptcy, he just can't do it, as Robert strangely listens, then awkwardly hugs him, Luis worries about the business as Robert throws out a slur of technical business terms, giving Luis the idea he knows this stuff, maybe Luis should hire him as an advisor? (I would say Robert smiled but I don't think he ever has)
Marlene calms down the crowd and the wedding is back on, accepto Marlene says, and now for Arnando, will he, and after a short pause he mumbles out uhum, is that yes or no the notary asks, and then a yeah, ok and they are officially man and wife, (and Jorge Luis Pila was so cool here) he picks up his ring, puts it on checking it out, turns his back on everyone, and walks to the sofa and a drink, leaving Marlene alone to fetch her ring and finish the ceremony.
Pablo has quit knocking and gone away, Virginia checks, and in he comes, straight to Eva's room, she demands he leave, he demands she listen... (ya, ya. kiss already)
(no show tomorrow)
Wow, deb, what a superb recap! I loved your asides, such as "I guess we're past the slapping" and "I would say Robert smiled but I don't think he ever has." I wonder whether we're going to have to start an "in the jewels" count.
Yes, except for her, um, athletic prowess, Eva does seem to be in replay mode. She loses it (again), she never wants to see him (again). Yawn.
Soraya seems to be making remarkable progress, at least physically. I'm not sure I could have crawled into the cupboard and maintained that position for as long as she does.
I wonder whether Soraya's mental confusion is contagious. Luis seems to have caught it. How else to explain his not seeing through Robert? Perhaps Damián will have to come to the rescue.
Thanks deb and Juanita (for the previous excellent recap)! I noticed that about the theme song last night. But I'll bet the words come back before long. At least now we're getting a full credit listing. Funny how these things evolve over the course of each show. I do love those scenes of the highway coming into LA. Makes me want to get on another road trip. I haven't been there in years.
Freaking out over Robert's insinuating himself into Luis' distraught confusion. I would hate for that creep to gain ground. Luis was so great with his mamá last night. Now he really knows the truth about how much he was loved. Eva (snooze) she better get a life and soon. But I'm still enamored of Edith Gonzales.
They made such a production of the "time passing" sequence, I was surprised it was only a week. But I guess long enough for Carlos to be well and truly dead. These writers are a bit clunky in their plot developments.
The wedding scene was a triumph. Armando played the only hand he has left, the sorry creep. What's with Camila? Has she turned around? I noticed a smidge less eyeliner last night. And will Rebecca's parting curses come to harm our sweet ingenuous Virginia. She's still not completely in the clear, is she? I, too, was amazed at the sheer square footage of floor space in Evencio's modest bungalow.
thanks guys!
I don't think Andy has actually killed anyone as yet, has he?
interesting how they are bringing Soraya out of her trauma, if she makes it I think she will be tougher than ever, coming at the bad guys with a taser in each hand.
if Robert gets his claws into Bobby, the owner, he'll be able to push Damian aside.
if anyone likes the theme song, 5ftlatina posted a longer version done by the singer, located here,

Deb, you outdid yourself! So many great lines. “guess we’re past the slapping” “Bobby has a front row seat on his early life” “kiss, kiss already”.
Yes, I think we’re all sick and tired of Eva telling Pablo they’re over. These writers seem brain damaged or something. Don’t they know they’re dealing with a good percentage of telenovela veterans? The two main leads always end up together. And some other novelas have better devices for separating the two than Eva’s hissy fits. I feel for Edith every time she has to behave that way.
I LOVED Armando walking off with his ring and sitting on the sofa with a stiff drink.
I don’t think Adriana bought his earnest protestations that he hadn’t killed Sofía. But she did say something about Marlene having done it, so maybe she may have left a shadow of a doubt about her father.
I wish they’d shown a bit more of the reactions of Marlene’s guests, her high class friends, hearing the accusations of murder. Armando handled it well though, trying to make it seem as though Eva was jealous he was marrying Marlene as a reason for Eva’s outburst. And she should have been more controlled in the way she accused him.
Yikes, Luis is a babe in the woods. Scummy Robert is licking his chops about getting his hands on some Panchopan money. And the $$$ inheritance as well.
oops, I posted the wrong link for the longer theme song above,
this is the correct one, as done by the singer, Barbara Intriago,
