El Hotel de los Secretos #79, 5/19/16: WTF Did We All Just Watch?

Part One

Oh my god. Guys, you guys, what did we just watch? What's going on? Someone tell meeeeeeeeeeee,

Okay, so I just finished the episode, the Univision App is crap, it lags, it shuts down on you as you're watching- and then you have to start watching from the start and hope the freaking thing will work, anyhoo, after two hours I finally made it through.

The episode was super slow until the last seven minutes, so let's recap the slow bits and then move on to the action, okay? So we start off with Belen going *splat*, once she realized that Andres knew about her involvement in the plan to get him killed, and finding herself surrounded she jumped to her death rather than face jail time, I think knowing that Olegario would place all the blame on her was the final push she needed to jump. Poor Andres, he is devastated, don't ask me why, but he is. Dummy. Andres blames Ayala and Co for Belen's death and I'm over here thinking "hu"?

Back at the Hotel, Alfredo is having some quality time with the little Al, he tells the baby that they need each other and I just want this dude to get up, run from the hotel and take the super adorable baby away. Alfredo is a good guy, proof of this is that when he learned about Belen's death he took the baby to Andres and told him he needed the baby more, oooh look, a therapy baby!

Meanwhile Teresa gets a summons from her friend, the judge, she is being accused of murdering her husband! Teresa wrongly assumes that Isabel was the one who ratted her but it was in fact Julio who did the deed in order to spare Isabel. This causes a major rift between the two. The lesson learned here is: Don't accuse your future mother in law of murder. It won't go over well. In this case it ended up making Teresa curse the day Isabel was born. Totally harsh.

Ayala confronts Olegario and tells him he's on to him and later Olegario makes the mistake of talking smack about Belen and gets a well deserved punch in the face.

Elsewhere in town, Juana and Diego are getting ready to leave Mexico, at least Juana thinks they are, Diego has other plans.

Teresa ran to Doctor V. for comfort after being served with the summons and he comforts her and later agrees to be her date to the party the hotel is throwing, and then he stands her up. More on that later.

Part two:

The party from hell

Ok so here's where the fun starts. Teresa gets ready for the party and finds that Doctor V. has stood her up, but she's a strong independent lady and goes to the party on her own. She gives a speech to her guests thanking them for their friendship and loyalty. While she does this other things are taking place in the hotel.

First we have Julio saying his goodbyes to Cecilia. He gives her a hug goodbye and Isabel walks in on them, misunderstands what's going on and stalks off. Julio leaves to go after her and Diego follows after them. Ooooh the drama!

While Julio and Isabel argue, Doctor V. leads Diego to them up in the secret room. Diego finds Julio and demands to know where Isabel is. Isabel hides. They start to fight and the fists fly and I LOVE IT. Yes, I'm blood thirsty and what? Diego deserved the beat down. Isabel comes from her hiding place and smashes a vase over  his head but fails to knock him out. Diego gets the gun and points it at Julio. Doctor V. appears and shoots Julio in the shoulder and tells Diego to take Isabel away! Ahhhhhhh, my brain!

The gunshot interrupts Ayala who was declaring his love to Matilde. Everyone rushes to see what is going on and they find Diego holding a gun to Isabel's head. Doctor V. pulls his gun on the group and prevents them from helping Isabel. Again, he tells Diego to take Isabel away, and Diego does. Diego drags Isabel out of the hotel by the hair while she begs him to let her go. He refuses to. Then she asks him to shoot her because she'd rather die than have him touch her again, then a shot rings out. Doctor V seems to believe this means Diego has killed Isabel and he put his gun down, again, WTF.

Back to the stairs at the entrance of the hotel. Diego continues to abuse Isabel, when we see Julio. He calls out to Diego "Montejo, die!" and shoots Diego!

OMG.

So looking forward to it Princess. All I can say at this point is

WHAT WAS THAT???????? I had to spend considerable time last night cleaning up after my brain imploded from the last part of the episode.

Wow, this show is going to take us to the cliff up to the last minute isn't it?

I think everyone's brain exploded when Doc Vic started HELPING Diego. I think Julio was more stunned that it was the doc who shot him, more than the shot itself stunning him. Teresa, Ayala, Isabel, Julio, etc. were all, WTF?!

Cutest scene-- Alfredo handing over the baby to Andres to comfort him after Belen's plunge, because he knew Andres needed the little guy most right then. How are they going to resolve this daddy issue?

I don't know, Vivi, but I'm still going WTF??? after that apparent about face of the doctor.

I think Julio was just grazed, since there wasn't a lot of blood. However, that came as a total shock and there better be a satisfactory resolution to this.

I never expected in a million years that Dr. Vic would turn into a bad guy. It will be interesting to find out what the angle is tonight. Dr. Vic broke my heart! I chuckled at the scene where Angela was sitting with the rich ladies for a few minutes and realized right away how this conversation did not suit her. Angela is so practical. I just love her character.

At least now we know those occasional looks of disdain from the Dr toward Isabel were looks of disdain

Flaco wondered if the doc was enacting revenge on Rom. Makes sense if Rom knew Diego was a murderer. My child dies, now your child dies.

Where's Belen's body?

Gracias Juju

Wow what an episode! Am I the only one who believes that Dr V is not a bad guy.? He probably shot Julio to get him away from Diego's wrath and not to directly help Diego. He is mysterious but not a guy to hurt his loved ones especially Isabel. That is by far the only reason of these sudden events. Anyway the fist fight between Diego & Julio was amazing and intense as hell.

The body count in this show is gigantic and parties at the Hotel always end up in blood fests. The Hotel must be Satan's home turf !

I hated Ceci at first but I love her character now. I wish to see her more to wreack vengeance upon Ape Diego.

I hated Andres's reaction . He should have been celebrating that he got relieved of Belen. She was a criminal after all. She had some redeeming qualities but the bad outweighted the good. Her anvil was way too small for my taste.

But if the Doc is still good, then why did he let Isa go out with Diego and hold a gun on everyone until he thought she was dead? I like Nanette's/Flaco's eye-for-an-eye scenario. Or daughter for a daughter.

I get that Angela is much more beautiful than Teresa on the inside, but I wasn't really feeling the dress. She should borrow something from Teresa. I did like her subtle diss of the society women though. Very Angela-like.

Either one of those guys, Andres or Alfredo, would be a good dad to that baby. But I'm hoping that Andres realizes the baby should be with Alfredo, who is already registered as the dad and more likely to take the child far away from all this nonsense of the hotel. Or maybe send it to Arizona with Jacinto. The further away the better.

Kelly

I loved that fist fight...I know that sounds deplorable, but it was absolutely beautiful in the camera angles, intensity, and the added moments of slow motion...it was jaw dropping.

I too thought that the Doc shot Julio in the arm on purpose. He had close enough range if he wanted to kill, he could have. But if he wasn't acting on revenge and Isa was his not intended victim, he was playing fast and loose with her. I'm hoping that shot was Ayala coming in to save the day, but boy, that's an easy off for Diego. I wanted a more dastardly anvil. One bullet seems too easy on him. Whatever the heck was going on, I can't remember the last time I sat edge of my seat just mumbling "what the heck, what the heck, OMG, what the heck?" (well, it was something else, but I'm cleaning it up for you guys).

I'm expecting more body count tonight--don't know why, it's two hours, I think we still need the revolution to rear it's head. The Rich versus Poor to me needs to play out.

Sophia was rather stoic last night. What was that symbolism (they do nothing without a reason in this show) with two young girls walking up to flank her. There was someting so cold and haughty with her in that room.

I say Andres and Alfredo go in business together

After Alfredo puts his maternal unit into a manicomio. He needs to have her out of his life forever.

I'm hoping it's CeCe who shoots Diego--if it's Diego who got shot. But I think it's too early into the GF for that to happen.

I think that maternal unit will loose her little hanger-on soon. She looked positively bored with Elisa now that they were in the "poorhouse". I vote Alfie and the baby too.
If Andres winds up with Nat ( if he survives), they can have their own cherubs. Alfie needs someone, he wasn't that bad a guy.

Anyone else thinking maybe Flippy was faking the drunk routine? For some reason, there were some interactions that made me wonder if he was acting more drunk they he really was. Or maybe I'm wishful thinking.

Don't know how much I'm allowed to say before the recap is up, but Flaco just told me something that about the doc that's very interesting. But since no one else has mentioned it, I'm thinking we're waiting for the recap?

Daisy, Dr V could have shot somewhere else but was forced to shoot Julio because Diego was in the room cornering everyone . Dr V most likely knows that Diego is a sharp shooter so he had to improvise. I don't buy his sudden shift of loyalty and care. Gahh we will know more tonight!

Andresp & Alfredo should totally do buisness together. If Alfredo takes back the rights than Andres might be invited to move just to be with his child. Andres could become the child's godfather. Now I am nkt even sure if I desire to see Nat coming back together with Andres. Andres is a dolt. He would panic over everything.
The Hotel has literarly sucked the lives , souls and nerves out of everyone with it's demonic presence . What if El Hotel is just an infestation, a construct of mind? That would mean each and everyone would need a white coat!! Diego flipped tables that weren't even there, everyone was sleeping under rocks the cooks were preparing imaginary pasta and Teresa ranted on phones with no lines . Everyone was dancing in the dark because actually there wasn't electricity yet. It was all a spectre in their minds!

Thanks, Juju. Looking forward to the recap. :)

What in heaven's name did I just watch? I had to remind myself to breathe throughout the episode and I was talking to my screen out loud like a crazy person! Come the last scenes, my brain just couldn't register what was going on and I kept looking at the Doc and asking over and over: "Who the heck is this guy? Who are you?". Then Teresa stared at him with a hit-me-over-the-head-with-a-heavy-mallet impactada look and asked: "Who are you?". Ending credis. Nooooooooo! How awesome is this show?

EHDLS had disappointing numbers overall, especially at the beginning. Imagine if Univision decided to take it off the air after 13 episodes like it did "Yago" and deprive us of the amazing climax that the story reached in the past 4 weeks. I'm so glad we got the opportunity to watch such a dynamic and innovative series. The way it fared in the US and Mexico, along with the way "Yago" was unceremoniously binned by Univision, indicate that we won't be seeing more of these stylized short series any time soon. Deep down, I know that "Tres Veces Ana" is going to be a mind-numbingly stupid circus but it'll get a huge success as far as ratings go and we'll be condemned to seeing more of these porquerías produced on the cheap and receiving popular acclaim. Oh the humanity!

Catch ya guys later!

Very much agree Nandicta. I still can't get over what they pulled on Yago. But if the ratings in their primary target audience wants Victoria Ruffo sobbing on their screens, that's what they will give them.

Hate to say, it almost makes you feel like going out on top and ending the drivel with El Hotel. But I'll give Ana a try though I'm not holding out hope for the writing. Sometimes now matter how much you like some performers, if the writing is bad, the writing is bad. After this TN, and the little we got on Yago, it will be painful to have to watch something that deviates back to what we spend more time poking fun at.

Daisynjay

I still want Doc to be a good guy and get revenge on Diego (I still think Doc is Clara's father) but I don't see why he would tell Diego to leave with Isabel knowing that he had a gun and wanted to kill her. Unless he gave the gun to Diego and it only had blanks in it and Diego didn't know?? I'm hoping he only shot Julio to make Diego think he was on his side. But then why hold every else at gunpoint and make them think that Isabel had been shot? MY HEAD HURTS.

Daisynjay: "After this TN, and the little we got on Yago, it will be painful to have to watch something that deviates back to what we spend more time poking fun at."--I feel the same. I'm not looking forward to watching TNs now that I've been exposed to Hotel and Yago. Don't think I could stomach the usual kind--unless they're the caliber of Amor Bravio, for example. But those are few and far between.

If the gun had blanks and Diego shot Isa in the head, she'd still die, more than likely. It's like the doc wants her to die. It can't be so Diego is hanged for murder--he was about to shoot Julio before the doc did. Isa is key here for some reason.

Nothing like a bunch of crazies with masks on.
What could possibly go wrong?

Doc, ¿Quien eres tu?
WHo did he shoot at the end, Teresa, Ayala are still standing while Diego continues to abuse Isa with JULIO on his trail.

GOing to be a suspenseful 2 hours tonight.

Wow. That's all I can say right now. I never took doc as a bad guy, and I like Nanette's theory of the eye for an eye. But, maybe Doc didn't like his daughter having a lover, just like Isabel is doing and maybe Doc thinks she deserves to die? Maybe Doc thought his daughter deserved to die for infidelity too.

I couldn't stomach the Victoria Ruffo novela at all. I quit and let it rot after the 2nd episode and that was being genereous of me. I already know how everything is going to end from the very first episodes. Yes it has Jacqline Andrere which is one of my favorite actors but the writing is horribad. Novelas aren't even entertainment anymore, they are just filler mierda filled with commercials, rampant sexism , product placement , cliches and drug abuse . Only a few exceptions stand out in the Modern time. You might as well start watching the original counterpants if you want to get actually entertained.

Daisy njay, my thought too, Felipe is faking it & maybe Jorge comes to the rescue. Where are the revolutionaries?
Maybe if JULIO is not the one that shoots Diego, there is a long list of possibilities. CEce, Jorge 'cause she knows Felipe loves his sis, Andres 'cause he (abused Belen)'
Ah Sofia!'!!!! he has the goods on her, I vote Sofia, good girl.

Isabel can get mad at Julio for turning in her mom, but she should be honest that she would have done the same thing, and has! She was quick to go to the cops when Cristina first showed up, Julio's feelings be damned. They have been digging up lots of evidence that Teresa either killed Rom or knows who did. I don't know if Isa is waiting for Teresa to confess it, but that's not going to happen. Let the cops take it from here.

Cathyx: I had a theory last night that was close to yours. I was thinking the doc was punishing Isa as a surrogate for his daughter for getting involved with Diego.

The surrogate idea is interesting. The doc might be just as ticked off at Clara for "getting herself killed" by having an affair, as he is at Diego for killing her. And Isa is a perfect stand in for her.

One more show to find out.

CountX,
What novela is la llorana Ruffo going to drown us in tears? I want to make SURE I miss it.
Anything Ruffo or Mejia, I stay far away from, both awful!!!!!

I stick to my conviction that the Doc is a good guy, there aren't many here, so he has to be one.

The solution to baby #2, is for Alfraido to adopt Andres & raise both Alfradito & Andres.

Juju, I'm still laughing,,!therapy baby!!, too, too funny!

CountXAlarcan...love your last comment. I do want to see "original counterpants"!

Just can't see how the doc could be a good guy when he put Isa and Julio--especially Isa--in mortal danger.

Variopinta.. the new Ruffo novela is also a Mejia novela. How much fun!

Also dropping by to say that this show is just full of surprises! I've been reading the recaps religiously and it's had a lot of twists and turns the original series did'nt.

Especially the Doc Vicario storyline (who is he???), Felipe and Manuela and Matilde and Ayala. Well Diegos mother never appeared in the original either.

So I'm very pleasantly surprised by all the changes that have kept this interesting even to me. And I love the soundtrack! The music when Julio and Isabel are together is absolutely gorgeous.

Thanks to all the recappers!! I haven't been able to watch this so without the recaps I wouldn't have realised how good this show actually is. Bless all of you!

TomBoy- I wish the folks who skipped this because they saw the original had stuck with it to realize how much these writers changed, added, and invented. I love that they made it different, while remaining high quality.

OHhhhh....yeah the Ayala/Mato scene. In all the madness, I was leaning into the TV going oh, for cripes sake KISS already. And then damn Doc had to go and shoot Julio.

Interesting theory on Doc and surrogate...but blast that means he's as looney as some of the others. That would explain why he was willing to help Teresa, fall in line with stealing another woman's baby and keeping Sophia quiet, for awhile anyway. And actually falling for Teresa. Ok...he's not sounding so good anymore does he.

Wondering if he's a Mason who came to protect Teresa and her riches and turned on Isa as she began to fight Teresa's plans, etc. Diego is a Mason too...protect each other at all costs?

I am prepared tonight with Mr. Clean, towels, wine and tisses. Cry at the sad parts, clean up after my brain implodes and down the wine when it's all over and we need to salute this exceptional show.

TomBoy
!por favor, please! tell me the novela, I want to avoid it like the plague

Could it possibly be that the doctor is Diego's estranged father whom he's never seen ? I know that theory probably has
a lot of holes in it since I really haven't thought it out. I'm thinking that maybe the doctor disapproved of
the way that his mother raised him and overlooked his bad behavior and is trying to stop him.
Thank you to all the recappers and commenters without whom I would have been
unable to enjoy this amazing novela.

Recap is up now

Thank you, Juju, for this great recap and all of the other ones you gave us!

Anon 7:15: I also thought that might be a possibility.

Many thanks, Princess Juju for all the entertaining recaps you provided throughout the run of this excellent series! I had many hearty chuckles but my favorite line ever from your recaps was this one (loved it so much I saved it!): "Sofia and Alfredo are super happy about the possible spa, they think that their mothers will finally let them be happy, poor fools. They should fake their deaths and move to Omaha. I think faking your death is the solution to EVERYTHING."

I love all the speculations about the Doc, though I can't say I consider him a good guy. I remember saying a long time ago that he was my favorite male character after Ayala and that I would be heart-broken if he turns out to be a baddie. Well, I mourned him the day we found out he wrote that note to Diego warning him that his wife had a lover. He knows full well just how sadistic and volatile Diego is yet he does his best to put Isabel in harm's way! Bad doctor, very baaad! He is still my second favorite male character and I still have a crush on Juan Ferrara! My (updated) theories are that Dr. Mysterious is either: Clara's dad, Diego's dad, Clara's lover (I know the letter says Samuel but still), Clara's lover's dad or (an old speculation I had way back when that letter business was discovered) Rómulo's friend/associate to whom the letter was addressed. These are all the options my brain could come up with. I can't possibly think of anything else.

-- Variopinta and all those with a low threshold for estupidez and permanently leaky tear ducts: The new Mejía/Ruffo masterpiece is called "Las Amazonas". Avoid at all costs or stock your tool shed with reinforced steel beanies to protect your brain cells.

-- TomBoy and Anon@7:15: Glad the recaps were a useful addition to your enjoyment of EHDLS.

Thank you TomBoy and Vivi for sharing your impressions of this show compared to "Gran Hotel". To be honest, most of the criticisms I heard about EHDLS were from people who didn't even see it and the majority of mocking comments frankly reeked of "malinchismo". Just because something was made in Europe doesn't mean it is necessarily superior. I watched the first 5 episodes of "Gran Hotel" and I like EHDLS better. Also those who put EHDLS down because they felt it's trying to be like "Downton Abbey". No offense, but I lived in the UK throughout "Downton Abbey"'s run and it is basically considered a glorified soap opera in period costumes with occasional funny quips from Maggie Smith. The show got it worse after the blond babyfaced protagonist, whatever his name is, was magically cured of paralysis then died in the Christmas Special. After that, people and newspapers pretty much just made fun of the show after every episode. I didn't even bother watching the last season because the one before last was just so lame, with one infamous scene actually consisting of Lady Frigid Mary coming into the house then saying: "I'm going upstairs to remove my hat". End of scene. But I digress. My point is that there is good and bad in everything and one can't simply elevate a production to the rank of absolute perfection simply because it's made in Europe and/or because actors speaking in a Castilian (or British) accent sound more sophisticated. EHDLS was inspired of "Gran Hotel" and improved on many of its aspects. Praising it would not take anything away from the quality of "Gran Hotel". That's why I never understood the relentless putting down of EHDLS in Mexico when it should be celebrated as an attempt to improve the quality of local TV series.

Well, better hit the hay to be fresh tomorrow morning for the finale! So excited (and sad)! Good night :)

Nandicita, very well said!

I keep seeing people comparing the two and calling EHDLS just another 'refrito' when it's actually so much more.

I for one am very glad I tuned in and saw the amazing spin the actors and directors put on this show.

I truly hope that they'll make another series like this but I really doubt it. What a shame :(

I think you are missing the point about Las Amazonas. If course we all know how it will end. The enjoyable part is seeing the twists and turns and tears they go through to get there. That is why people watch novelas. Evora and Ruffo have, in the past, made a very satisfying couple of watch. The supporting cast is excellent. I am going to give it a chance.
