Sueño de Amor (SdA) #44. Monday May 9, 2016. The One Where Nobody Calls The Police.

At a glance

-- Aranza gets kidnapped, beaten and raped because Osorio is running out of cheap ploys to raise the ratings of this train wreck.
-- Adrián runs away from home and spends the night drinking on a pile of garbage.
-- Nobody has the presence of mind to call the cops!

A closer look

In their luxury suite in Acapulco, Esperanza and Ricardo mingle limbs in slo-mo and fall asleep in a pillowless diagonal embrace.

Back in Mexico City, Kristel tells Pedro that Salma’s pregnancy brought their family together. Silver linings and whatnot. However, Kristel doesn’t know where her witch of a mother moved out to. Pedro informs her that her mom was the one who sent the CCTV tape that got him locked up in the holding cells (separos) of the police station. However, he is still alive and kicking (vivito y coleando), so no harm no foul. Pedro receives the sympathy he was fishing for in the form of a kiss. A kiss for which he’ll get admonished, at some point, by Princess Confundida

At Instituto Palacios, Napoleón, the security guard, catches homeless Silvana vandalizing school property. She was banging on the vending machine because it didn't deliver her dinner: A measly small-sized packet of potato chips. Oh how the mighty have fallen!

On her way back from her hostess job, Aranza is followed by a car. It’s one of the creeps she served that night. Instead of running like the wind and/or ducking into a shop and asking for help and/or phoning the police to give them the license plate number of the car chasing her and/or hailing/phoning a cab, Aranza calls Pato! Yep, that’s what Aranza does in the face of clear and present danger! Instead of getting help from people who can give it, she calls her clueless teenage friend who calls Andrés the nanny, then calls Pedro, then calls Luca. The latter has his own emergency to deal with because Adrián disappeared. Aranza’s assailant has had time to catch up to her since she is walking at a leisurely pace and not calling for help. She gives her attacker a gentle kick that barely grazes his crotch and, instead of running AWAY, she runs towards the dude’s car and throws herself on the hood to allow him to manhandle her. Pedro arrives in a taxi and tussles with the dude. Instead of taking advantage of the distraction to run away and call the police, she gets punched out cold by her assailant. He throws her in the backseat of his car and drives off. Andrés the nanny arrives too little too late and sends the license plate number to his cop buddies.

Adrián is drinking in a garbage dump because getting schlitzed on cheap booze has proven to solve his problems in the past.

Back in tropical Acapulco, the lovebirds have a dip in the hot tub and eat chocolate strawberries, one of many desserts they savored that evening. They decide to get married in a month. I’ll make a wild guess here and affirm that these two will not get married in a month. No way no how.

Kracy is at Ernesto’s place, in minimal clothing. She wants in on his La Sombra plan. The thought of engaging in criminal activity gets them all hot and bothered, but Anastasia interrupts. She is on the intercom begging for money, crying that she doesn't even have enough to eat. B*tch, get a job! Ernesto didn’t say this, I did. He did however order her to bugger off and stop bugging them, beggar (limosnera)! Kracy and Ernesto get down to business. They ignore Viviana’s phone call. Viviana decides to ring Mario and ask him to help her locate Adrián.

Poor Aranza wakes up in a strange place and finds herself tied to a bed. The swine who kidnapped her rapes her.

In Acapulco, Ricardo has a nightmare about La Sombra and wakes up. He finds Esperanza in the terrace. She can’t sleep because of the sweltering heat. They talk about their happiness to be together and on the verge of tying the knot. They also discuss Rodrigo’s disappointment when he finds out that his only friend, Homero, is the son of his dad’s worst enemy. Ricardo informs Esperanza - and the audience - that he has 3 nationalities: Chilean, Mexican and American. He feels more Mexican at heart, which makes sense since the actor playing him is starring in a Mexican telenovela.

The search for Adrián continues. Salma hasn’t heard from him but she knows he’s gone to get alcohol. There are many places that are willing to sell liquor to underage teenagers.

Adrián is still drinking, surrounded by filth and rats. He flashbacks to his dad’s mistreatment. Isn’t he supposed to be depressed about the baby and Estrella breaking up with him? Oh well.

Aranza’s ordeal is over and the hotel room where she was raped is empty. It appears that her assailant has left and did not kill her, but does she call the police? Noooo! She calls Pedro! He goes to get her and, again, neither one of them has thought of alerting the authorities! What can I do for you? he asks. Call the damn police, fool! She recoils on the bed and tells Pedro she wants to die. He stretches his arms towards her but doesn’t move. He’s letting the beaten, bruised and savagely raped girl walk to him to get her hug! Let the poor gal make an effort to get a little comforting from her friend! Pato calls Pedro. He tells her what happened. “No, no, no! ¡No puede ser!”, she exclaims. What else can she say? This is a telenovela; denial and not calling the police is the way characters deal with tragedy.

On their nightly excursion in the city slums to look for Adrián, Viviana and Luca bump into a group of unsavory characters. It turns out that they were just looking for a little money to get their liquor (pomo). Viviana thinks that what is happening is all her fault for being so superficial and for failing to protect Adrián from Ernesto. Sorry to insist, but isn’t Adrián supposed to be down in the dumps because of the whole baby business?

Apparently, it’s “let’s all hate on Ernesto day” because Salma as well is joining the dissing! “Poor Adrián!”, she thinks, “I can’t imagine having a dad like Ernesto!” Again, hate to be stickler, but wasn’t Adrián doing just fine until you told him that the sexual abuse he suffered at your hands resulted in an unwanted pregnancy? Ernesto is no saint but can we focus on the issue here?

At Casa Gallo, Estrella wants to go looking for Adrián in the middle of the night but her brothers stop her. “Adrián could be in danger!”, she protests. So your proposed solution is to endanger yourself too? Thank goodness, Erasmo and Kiko have functioning brains and prevent their idiot sister from going out at that ungodly hour to look for the alcoholic boyfriend that she herself dumped after he impregnated another girl.

Oh no! Aranza washed her face and wants to go home and erase every trace of her rape because she doesn’t see the point of jailing her rapist and aggressor. This is such phenomenal bull, I can’t! How could Aranza possibly think that not reporting her rapist is the best course of action? After what she has just suffered, she should be prepared to skin that mofo alive! Why is she adamant in letting him get off the hook so easily?

At Casa Manzanares, Kristel tells Margarita that she loves Pedro but is still very much confundida. She can’t make up her mind yet. She wants her grandma to understand her suffering and confusion. Juaréver, lady! I am so over your cheap drama!

Finally, Aranza does the right thing and lodges a complaint against her rapist. We learn that she is only 17. How come she worked as a hostess, serving alcohol at a bar?

It’s the next morning in Acapulco and the lovebirds are strolling along the seashore. Esperanza tells her fiancé that she slept like a log (como un tronco). Finally, one of her life dreams came true, because she woke up next to the man she loves, and in one month, this will happen every single morning. Ricardo says he’ll win custody of his children and they’ll all be one big happy family: the Alegría-Guerrero family, with Ricardo’s kids, Esperanza’s kids and the kids that the couple will have in the near future. This much happiness is too fishy in the telenovela universe

A quote from the capítulo

“(...) hermoso, chiquitito, precioso... Sería la bendición más grande de Dios.”

*Esperanza imagines what her future child with Ricardo would look like: “(...) beautiful, small, precious... It would be God’s greatest blessing.”

Thank you for stopping by over the weekend. Much appreciated, indeed.

Enjoy the discussion! :)

Thank you Nandicta!

This was one of the bleakest episodes yet. Ara was savagely attacked...

And Adrian had a relapse (perhaps not as I fear he wasn't sober for more than a few moments)...He ended up in a pile of newspaper, infested with rats.

He still fared much, much better than poor Ara.

I wish I had taken notes but those were the lowlights. I think I blacked out most of what occurred from my mind.

Diana

Thanks in advance, Namdicta, for your recap. No worries bout the recap. We all have had those obnoxious outages.

A few thoughts before I hit the road:

Ara should be able to have the bastard that raped her also charged with kidnapping besides the aggravated sexual assault if they find him.

So, Ricardo and Esperanza are to get married in a month. Hmmmmmm . . . Seems a little early for a "happy ending" for them.

Loved Ernesto amd Tracy so into each othe and Tracy with the mask on. Might she be mistaken some time as La Sombra and meet an early end if Ernesto doesn't.

So sad too bad Anastasia. Might she commit suicide?

Interesting Luca getting hit up,on the street for cash being in the wrong neighborhood and all looking for Adrián.

I felt sorry for Adrián passing out in the garbage heap.

I am sick of Kristel not being able to make up her mind.

Highlight of last night Selena calling Pato: "Pato Cuac"!

Sorry for the typo: NaNdicta!

I will be waiting, thanks for the effort!

Thank you Jarifa!

I'm going to save my comments on the terrible events of last night for the recap but will now try for a bit of levity.

I've tried to be fair. Truly.

In terms of Kristel's agonizing over her suitors? I have attempted to step back and remember when I was Kristel's age (many years ago) to see what could make her possibly consider preferring Pedro over Erasmo. Honestly, I came up empty handed.

Seeing Erasmo in that tight sleeveless shirt last night sealed it for me. Kristel is not ready for such a man. Clearly, if she were, there would be no doubt in her mind.

It's man vs. boy and Kristel is not yet ready to step up to the major leagues.

I think Erasmo deserves so much more. Frankly, Kristel is OK, but not "all that".

Diana

I think Erasmo is too mature for Kristel. They may be close to the same age, but he had to grow up a lot faster. He works hard, maintains a home, takes care of his siblings including trying to get treatment for Kiko, is trying to go back to school, does the grocery shopping and cooking, goes without so his sister can have a smartphone, etc. Kristel may have a horrid mother, but she's still basically a kid who's used to being pampered. Even her brief job has not exactly been hard work; she shows up and looks pretty. She plays at architecture but we've never seen her put a great deal of effort into her schoolwork like most real architecture students do.

Erasmo is far and away the better choice, but his life is also one of adult responsibilities, and I don't think Kristel is anywhere near ready for that. I don't see why she'd choose Pedro, but I can see why she'd want more carefree relationships for awhile yet. Erasmo should be thanking his lucky stars that she imploded their relationship before he was stuck trying to keep her happy and maintained while she made the feeblest token attempts at work and felt like she was doing her share.

They still haven't given us any reasons to think Ric is a swoonworthy galán. At any point are we going to actually believe that he deserves a happily-ever-after with Esperanza? I do not accept cheesy love vaults and cringeworthy public proposals as proof of anything. And I still want Espe to become a better agent than Ric (to quote Elle Woods, "What? Like it's hard?!") and catch La Sombra herself.

Too bad the Mickey Mouse idea is taken.

I also wanted to wait but I am going to say this, Aranza is in no way 17, otherwise she could have not been working as a ''hostess'' in a bar of questionable reputation. But then if she lied, both herself and whoever hired her will be in trouble. I don't want to sound harsh, but what was she expecting working in a place like that?

The young man who plays Adrian just tears me up. I feel so sorry the character he plays. Erasmos........WHOA what a hunk. I notice many of the patio peeps are no longer here, how much longer is SdA scheduled to run? I can only do one TN a night and miss many of the other peeps.

To all the recappers, thank you, and I do enjoy all the folks that are hanging in with me.

Make that Erasmo,

Julia, your reasons why Kristel isn't ready for Erasmo (or his lifestyle, family among many factors) was well stated.

I still prefer my reason. She doesn't deserve those chiseled arms. Vapid I know but I can't help myself ;)

emeraldrose, agree with your comment regarding Adrian. He is very talented and all too believable.

I am not sure how many more episodes there are but I would suspect at least 50, perhaps more?

Diana

I agree with you, Diana. You know who deserves Erasmo? YOU DO. You should have him around your home, using those chiseled arms to build you a new brick poolhouse and hang a hammock from which you can admire him building it. I'm not entirely sure you should USE the poolhouse. He doesn't have a great track record for stable wall construction. But you should have him build it. I'm sure you could appreciate him properly.

Julia, what a gift! Thank you! And I would appreciate him. Sigh.

Diana

The recap is finally up. I couldn't get a repair person until this morning then I had to wait for my lunch break to watch the episode. Many thanks to all for your patience and for filling in the gaps to your fellow readers.

Diana, Jarifa, Pablo and Julia, your support and faithful following is very much appreciated. Emeraldrose, you are welcome to join the discussion any time. :)

Thanks Nandicta for the recap. I don't always catch this one, but I'm wishing I hadn't watched this episode. I was not expecting anything that bad from this supposedly silly and light-hearted TN. :(

Thanks a bunch! It was worth the wait, as always!

Thank you J! You are right, this episode was too dreary for a supposedly light-hearted comedy. Actually, there is a lot of gratuitous violence and sex scenes in this family-oriented show. :)

Thank you Pablo! You are too kind :)

Nandicta,

The episode made me so very sad but your recap was a wonderful antidote.

"Adrián is drinking in a garbage dump because getting schlitzed on cheap booze has proven to solve his problems in the past" and "She is on the intercom begging for money, crying that she doesn't even have enough to eat. B*tch, get a job! Ernesto didn’t say this, I did" were wonderfully wry.

Like you, I was relieved that Ara finally, finally went to the police.

Adrian continues to drown...

I agree with you and J that this tragedy was not in keeping with the overall theme of this show and was too heavy to digest.

Nandicta, your vocabulary and dedication to this is so appreciated.

Diana

Many thanks, Diana! Your support is greatly appreciated! :)
