EVA – JUEVES – Parte 1 de 2

Inside the frosty windows at Mon-Sol (thanks, deb!) Marlene tells Fajardo she has had no contact with her brother for a few days. Fajardo, dripping sarcasm, says that, if Andy is in touch, he should come see him because they found blood in his apartment. And he won’t stand a chance to leave the country.

After Fajardo leaves Armando gets real close to Marlene and asks her what she did. With that gorgon face she admits she killed Marta with her own hands – because she’s a traitor and because he slept with her (stroking his face at this last part). He jumps away as if scalded and leaves.

Gusano has figured out who killed Marta and wants to flee but Elsa reminds him Marlene has them watched.

Camila is very sad, crying. She tells Adriana that she’s going to meet Andy and let the police capture him. He calls just then and she says she’s on her way.

Cinthia comes to plead their case with Luis. Luis: “Let me guess. It’s about Robert. Did he or did he not steal the money?” Cinthia says he asked for a loan. Luis: “He took a loan without permission and this is vile and vulgar stealing.”

Of course the Trap Andy doesn’t work out because it’s not the last week of the novela. Marlene calls him and tells him they have a witness who saw he and Rebeca moving the body. He figures out that it must have been Camila. He runs and gets away from the cops.

Armando comes to Eva’s house, finds Victoria and figures out she’s been spying. Eva comes into the room reminding him that she has no reason to not play dirty. She swore she’d get him. She asks him how stupid he could possibly be taking a lover in the same place he works with La Alacrana. Even though he knows the truth, Armando tells her Marlene would not be so stupid as to kill Marta. Eva tells him he’s blind. Marlene pretends to be elegant and refined, but she’s insecure and sick in the head. She finishes the conversation by telling him everyone has the person at their side that they deserve!

We see Luis outside Robert’s cell. [I love the way, even in the US, in telenovelas, visitors go right up to the prisoner’s cell.] Luis tells him it’s the second time Robert stole from the Mogollons. [If he only knew the real reason Robert needed the money.] Luis refuses to help and walks out of there.

Armando is meeting with his confessor aka Evencio. He makes the mistake of lamenting the death of the sweet person Marta, while Sofía… Evencio punches him in the stomach.

Cinthia bails Robert out with her jewelry and his fine watches. He is outraged to find out she sold his new golf clubs.

EVA – JUEVES – Parte 2 de 2

ONE WEEK LATER

It’s time for Luis and Adriana’s wedding. Armando, looking gorgeous in a tux, is ready to leave. Marlene plans to accompany him. Simpering, massively hypocritical, she says Adriana is like her daughter. Armando refuses to take her, saying he won’t let her ruin Adri’s wedding.

Pablo brings Cecilia home with Ana, of course, tagging along. She has a vacation coming and offers to take care of the baby until he can arrange something. My teeth ache from all her sweetness. Later Pablo tells her not to get involved. All he can offer is friendship. She can’t resist and asks if he still loves Eva. He says he doesn’t want to, but…

Armando walks Adri down the back yard aisle. A priest begins to ask them to recite their vows when Marlene shows up in her black witch outfit. Sí, soy la madrasta mala del cuento. How could you have a party without me. “Which would you prefer: a curse lasting 100 years or a bolt of lightning?” [Pretty funny, actually] Armando hustles her out of there but not before she calls them all a bola de nacos y traileros. Eva tells her: “Yep, we’re common, all right. But you… no one loves you and no one desires you!”

After Armando brings the witch home and refuses her sexual advance, she vows he’ll be sorry. Later he tells Evencio he fears for Eva and his daughters.

After the wedding Luis hangs tough with the Monteverdes. Robert loses it and goes into one of his “imbecile” tirades. Luis agrees with him. He says he’s not like them; he’s a Mogollón!

Soraya approaches Luis and the Monteverdes. She says, dripping honey, what a shame they’re selling. But she tells them to look on the bright side. The sooner they sell the house the sooner they can pay her back and then they’ll all be buddies again!

Reynaldo has come to do some trucking business with Eva.

The Monteverdes are packing when Soraya arrives, all sweetness and light, saying she’s spoken to their banker, a good friend of hers, and she’ll buy their house.

La Esclava Blanca... epi 36/61
part 1

Julian is searching the slave quarters at Eden, but won't say for who, rumor is an escaped slave, they all wish him well.

Felipe tells Isais to take Cata far away, Isais wants Felipe to convince her first, Cata won't leave but Felipe gives her no choice, sends her to Antioque with a letter to an acquaintance that will treat he like a daughter, Felipe swears he'll meet her there, is this the first time they have separated?

the General, with his men, arrive at Damian's place, how can I help you Damian asks as he refers to his friend the General as Fidel, who raids the place, they find a dark storeroom with the shackled slaves he was smuggling and take Damian away in irons. (we later hear the slaves were in such poor condition two were dead)

Felipe awaits at home with his gun for those who will come to kill him, but no one comes till morning, it's Alonso to tell him his information was correct, Damian has been arrested, your father kept his word Felipe says.

Isais and Cata travel in a wagon and are not to far from a native inn where they will stop, but there is a stranger in the road, Cata recognizes his voice as the man that threatened her, he shoots Isais as Cata runs into the field and hides, he tracks her down and slits her throat, dragging her back to the road where she will be found.

Damian's slaves wonder what will happen to them, (don't know her name) suggests they run for it before the authorities come to take charge.

Milagros takes coffee and wraps to Julian and his men, thanks to the Marquesas, and gets his permission to take one to her papa, and tells Tomas the latest news, it was Marcos they were looking for and Damian is in jail, the news of Marcos worries Miguel and Trinidad, he knows about usand the causa.

it's the slaves night out and Julian wants to meet with Milagros, but she says it's for negroes, and she doesn't see him getting any darker by then. (it's also the monthly causa meeting)

Ana is found on the floor, severely beaten and unresponsive, they help her the best they can until Granados gets back, she needs a doctor but there isn't one anymore, he sends Paca to Eden to get Milagros.

Felipe goes with Alonso and the General to see Damian, says he is building a case against him, and accuses him of threatening Cata, but Damian says he sent no man.

Nicolas and Victoria go to Santa Marta, Reme has the job of distracting Adela so she doesn't go along, she fakes a fall, this also gives Isabel a chance to ask Tomas to make something for her, she shows him a picture in a book.

they stop to see the General about Damian, how serious is this, the General says since Bolivar this has become a serious crime, we learn smuggling slaves from the Antilles is 10 years, slaves from Africa is the death penalty, boring stuff for Victoria who goes for some fresh air, or rather to snoop around, and in the library ?? she picks up a book and is stumbled upon by Alonso, who offers to help her find what she is looking for, and later we see them with a book of military tunnels in Cartagena she had no idea, and this one, there are similar tunnels around Santa Marta but not many people know about them, Alonso explains, these were built to prevent the horror that happened in Cartagena when it was besieged by Pablo Morillo, but the plan was abandoned.

after a while Nicolas becomes worried Victoria has not returned and tracks her down, she pulls a book over the one they were looking at and Nicolas sees it's a book on the history of ships and brigs, boring stuff, the General says he will import as many novels as she wants.

La Esclava Blanca... epi 36/61
part 2

Paca borrows Milagros and are seen leaving by Miguel who wants to talk to them, Trinidad and Enith fight as Miguel slips away, Miguel talks to Paca about Marcos, she says he was tortured to tell who painted the warnings, and tells of Ana being beaten for helping him escape, but how did Granados know it was Ana, it wasn't the foremen, so there must be a traitor, Miguel tells Paca there is a meeting for the causa tonight, be careful.

the General is called to investigate two bodies found on the road to Mompox.

as they are leaving Nicolas refers to Alonso as a traitor, but what about Damian Victoria asks.

Nicolas goes to see Damian as Victoria is supposed to return to Eden, Nicolas gives his support, Damian says if you can get me out of here you'll never see me again.

Milagros who is treating Ana tells Granados she needs some Lamb flowers used to treat blows and blood clots, they only grow in Europe, but I can get some at the port, yes, yes, just go, and Paca arranges a cart ride.

the General and Alonso show up at Felipe's, he's happy about how they took care of Damian, this completely changes my opinion of you, Felipe says, but that's not why they are there, and they break the news about Cata.

as Alonso and the General stand in the doorway of the morgue, covering their noses, Felipe identifies the bodies.

quietly Felipe speaks, Cata, you taught me everything in this life, why didn't you teach me how to live without you, you are leaving me and you're taking my heart with you.

"Wooly Lamb's Ear, botanical name Stachys byzantina, has been used for centuries as a wound dressing on battlefields. Not only do the soft, fuzzy leaves absorb blood and help it to clot more quickly, they also contain antibacterial, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties."

Pablo Morillo (Spanish Royal Marine Corps) "He set sail with a fleet of 18 warships and 42 cargo ships with the mission to pacify the revolts against the Spanish monarchy in the American colonies. He travelled to La Guaira, Caracas, Puerto Cabello and Cartagena de Indias (United Provinces of New Granada) in a military campaign to fight Simon Bolívar's revolutionary armies".

"On August 22, 1815, Morillo surrounded the walled city of Cartagena and put it under siege, preventing any supplies from going in until December 6 of this same year when the Spanish Royal Army entered the city".

va

you do such neat recaps novelera!

"My teeth ache from all her sweetness"
and "the back yard aisle"

so Marlene has Rebeca and Andy stashed at an out of the way place, Rebeca wants a taste of Andy but he leaves, to do what...

and Marlene coming down those stairs dressed for the wedding in black, I'm thinking Maleficent (I didn't even see the Disney movie), as do the maids, who ask Eva for a job, it's just too scary over there, Eva says hang in there for a couple of days, I'll find something for you.

Eva

Many thanks, novelera, for another superb recap. I loved so many of your lines, such as "My teeth ache from all her sweetness," "[Armando] jumps away as if scalded and leaves," and "Of course the Trap Andy doesn’t work out because it’s not the last week of the novela." And yes, I too thought Marlene's wicked witch lines at the wedding were pretty funny. And she so looked the part.

Three cheers for Luis! He surprised me by not falling for the Monteverdes' pleas and excuses. And when Robert finally reverted to type and started berating him as an imbecile, Luis smiled and said something like "Ah yes, here's the Robert Monteverde I know."

Armando is right to fear for the well-being of Eva and their daughters, but he should also fear for himself. Marlene has been thinking for some time of getting rid of him, and she doesn't have divorce in mind.

I don't (yet) have diabetes, but Doctora SweetFace is endangering my health. Also, I'm wondering what she did with the letter for Eva after reading it. My hope is that it may come back to do her in.

Esclava

Thanks very much, deb, for another terrific recap. I'm a little depressed to realize how much I miss when I watch this novela, but your recap was, as always, immensely helpful.

I'm really pressed for time right now, but I do want to mention how much I appreciated the added information about Wooly Lamb's Ear and Pablo Morillo.

Eva. Excellent recap, novelera! I especially liked "jumps away as if scalded" and "of course the trap didn't work because it's not the last week of the novela"--so true! I personally thought that Marlene looked a lot like the evil queen/stepmother in Snow White, and although her lines about the 100-year curse or the lightening bolt were funny, they were also another sign that she's now completely losing it mentally. Gusano was also feeling guilty that because of his gossip someone was killed. Like Juanita, I'm also very glad that Luis didn't give in to Robert Monteverde this time, and I thoroughly enjoyed Armando's stomach punch for insulting Sofía, whom Evencio had considered a daughter rather than a stepdaughter. Armando so had it coming! Soraya's revenge is progressing splendidly. That woman is so smart!

Juanita: On Esclava, The evil plots against Miguel is getting frustrating because I'm worried they might kill him off before this TN ends.

Esclava Blanca

Thanks for the recap, deb, and the extra info.

No! Why did they have to kill Catalina and Isaias? :(

I'm trying to watch this episode online but Telemundo's Esclava Blanca page is not working for me (even though all of their other telenovela pages are), so hopefully it gets fixed by tomorrow morning or I might not be able to do a recap of Friday's episode.

Eva. Eva has diagnosed Marlene's character and mental state just about exactly right.

Esclava

J- telemundo has a site on youtube, do a search there for telemundo english, because they offer engish captions, but you need to register to see more than the first segment which I've never done.

Eva. In fact, you could say in this case that Eva is a kind of concealed narrator who is probably expressing the author's views and what we are supposed to think about Marlene.

Eva. I loved how Diego was teasing Pablo about his "novias."

Esclava:
Thanks so much, I cried for Cata, Isaias and Ana. I am afraid for Miguel too but I am hoping he makes it till the end and live happily ever after with Victoria, lol, fairy tale much? It occurred to me last night were it not for this slave story I never saw 90 percent of the black actors in this novela. I know 3 to be exact. Why they are not working in other soaps in Colombia or elsewhere? I can understand(not really) in Mexican soaps blacks are scarce but if they could cast all these black actors but Esclava why not for other genres? Anyhoo, back to the story, the malditos are seeing the writing on the wall. I am praying their anvils are huge.
Romy

Esclava

Thanks deb, I tried Youtube but I couldn't find the complete episodes even after subscribing. The main page for Esclava Blanca is still down on the Telemundo website, but I am able to access the capitulos section so I should be able to watch the episode.

Romy, I hope there is a happy ending too! I mean, it is a TN after all even if it is much sadder/more historical than others. As for the black actors, I was also wondering why there isn't much diversity in other TNs. I know that the actor playing Tomas is Puerto Rican, Lorenza is Panamanian, and Miguel is Cuban - I'm not familiar with TNs from those places though or if the actors normally act in other countries anyway.

I hope Telemundo airs more Caracol productions from Colombia. One of their goals is to promote inclusion and tolerance in everything they do. Maybe someday we'll see more diversity among the characters and relationships in other countries' TNs too.

Eva

I can do a mini-recap of tonight's episode. If someone else would rather do it, please let me know.

EVA LA TRAILERA - MARTES - Parte 1 de 2

Cinthia and Robert are not happy that Soraya will buy their house. They tell her they haven't decided yet, they have other offers. She tells them to stop being ridiculous, would they prefer that the house be auctioned off? Robert claims that they gain nothing by selling to her. She replies that what they gain is Robert's liberty. He'll be free to work, to earn money. And oh, by the way, Cinthia, I have a good friend who has a salon that runs children's parties. She needs someone to help with cleaning. Should I give you her phone number?

Rey speaks to Eva as Federica's representative: "Tell me what you need for your business to grow." She tells him that she needs 20 more trucks. OK, he replies, and what else? She starts listing other things her business needs, such as a more modern communication system, better insurance for her employees.... She's reluctant to continue, but Rey responds: "Don't you realize that it's a pleasure for her and for me to help you?" She hugs him, then pulls back and says "This never happened."

At Pablo's, Diego announces that he didn't sleep well because he kept being awakened by Cecilia's cries. Why does she wake up so often? he asks Martin. Martin explains that babies eat often, perhaps every two or three hours. Well, she's running late, says Diego, because she last awoke at 4:11. As soon as he says this, we hear her cry.

Soraya continues "assuring" Cinthia and Robert that there's no reason to worry. The house will remain in fine shape. She's thinking of renting it to a diplomat, or perhaps an officer of Panchopan, or perhaps she'll just move in herself. Robert accuses her of being cruel. She responds that she's not cruel, she's fair, just. And the moving truck will be here tomorrow, so please have everything ready. Cinthia asks, "Don't you care that we have no place to go?" "No," she replies.

Back at Pablo's, Doctora SweetFace arrives with all kinds of supplies Cecilia will need: milk, diapers, bath soap, etc. She tells Pablo that she has two weeks off to help with Cecilia. Martin and Pablo go into a separate room to do some "consulting" -- i.e., Martin asks Pablo what's going on. "No one does something for nothing," he tells Pablo. "You know perfectly well that she's in love with you." They talk about how good-looking, intelligent, and delightful SweetFace is, and then Martin asks, "So what are you going to do with your feelings for Eva?"

At Mon-Sol, one of the workers comes to see Armando about a grave problem: Eva is recruiting drivers, and she's offering better pay, medical insurance, and other benefits. He asks Armando what Mon-Sol will do if everyone goes over to Eva. Armando assures him that won't happen; Eva doesn't have enough money. The man says, well, I've done my duty, I've warned you about the problem. He leaves, and Armando is clearly very pleased that Eva is winning.

We see six drivers come to the Mon-Sol office to resign. Elsa is very cool to them, telling them to get back to work so they won't be fired. They tell her that they can't be fired, they're resigning. Soon afterwards, Marlene comes upon them, and they tell her that they're resigning. "You can't resign," she informs them. "You have a contract." "We're not slaves," one of them replies. "We've found a company with better conditions, and we're resigning."

Marlene returns to her house, upset because the drivers are resigning en masse. Armando tells her, "They're not the only ones" and shows her a note left on the table by Noemi and Celeste: RENUNCIAMOS.

EVA LA TRAILERA - MARTES - Parte 2 de 2

Noemi and Celeste are at Eva's. She tells them that she has figured out a way for them to leave La Alacrana. One of them will go to help with Pablo's baby, and the other will go to Soraya's. Celeste was wonderful helping with Fabi when she was a baby, so she will go to Pablo's. And Noemi will get her wish to go to Soraya's (where, of course, Esteban is).

At Pablo's, Dra SweetFace is holding Cecilia. Diego notices that the baby smells bad. Dra SF takes Cecilia into the bedroom Cecilia shares with Pablo to change her diaper. Pablo is asleep but wakes up. He's very grateful to SF for her much-needed help. The two of them stand facing each other and give each other Expectant Looks. Meanwhile, there's a knock at the door. Eva arrives with Celeste. Eva asks Diego where Pablo is. In the bedroom, he replies. Of course, when Eva enters, Pablo and SF are kissing. She leaves, Pablo runs after her, and they have round 127 of Mutual Recrimination. "You're as bad as Armando," Eva tells him. "You're as much of a scoundrel (sinvergüenza), more of a hypocrite, and just as unfaithful. Your lambskin hides the wolf within." Diego gets very upset at the arguing and the raised voices. Eva apologizes to Diego and leaves with Celeste.

After Eva leaves, Pablo and SweetFace talk. She asks him whether he wants to continue with Eva. He says he still doesn't know. He's tired of being a puppet, of being a shoulder to cry on, second fiddle (su plato de segunda mesa). She tells him she'll leave the door open, but if he comes through it, "please don't try to use me as a tool to get another person out of your heart." SweetFace leaves, and Diego comments that Pablo really messed up, and that you can't have two novias, because they get sad and angry, like Eva.

Cinthia and Robert have packed and are ready to leave. Soraya breezes in, asks for the keys, and tells them that her chauffeur is waiting to take them to whatever hotel they specify. She adds that she'll invite them to the party she'll throw when the house is reopened. A short time later we see Cinthia and Robert enter their new digs, a very modest house or apartment.

Soraya tells Noemi that she's welcome, but she should be very careful with Esteban. He doesn't seem to return her feelings the way she deserves, and there's not much one can do about that. To avoid discomfort, Soraya has put Noemi at one end of the house and Esteban at the other. [Which of course doesn't prevent them from running into each other. They agree to be "amigos."]

The two thugs that Andy had hired to kill the Morgollones and to transport drugs have apparently not been fully paid. Tlhey come to Andy's apartment to settle matters, but when they get there they see police crime scene tape across the door and quickly leave. They also have been trying to see Marlene, but she's never at Mon-Sol when they come. This time, they encounter both Javier and Elsa (guess which one stands up to them) and learn that Marlene is at her house.

Armando comes to see Eva to let her know that he's worried about her safety and that of their daughters. Eva presses him for more information, but he can offer nothing concrete. Eva she says if he were really sincere, he would tell her what he knows about the murders of Carmen and Sofia. He would repent. It's not too late. "Don't let that vile being, Marlene Palacios, destroy your family" (No dejes que ese ser vil que es Marlene Palacios acabe con tu familia). Will her words have any effect? Tune in Monday, same time, same station.

Eva. Excellent and very complete recap, Juanita! Not mini at all! Dang, I wish when my children came home from the hospital I'd had a neonatologist MD willing to help put for nothing! Ana tells Pablo she doesn't like insecure/unsure men? That should completely let Pablo out! She's actually sensible about Eva and whether Pablo could love her or not, which makes the hiding of Betty's letter even more out of character. Of course Eva walks in at the absolute moment when Pablo is kissing Ana. She's a telenovela heroine. It's what they do! But she's rather unreasonable in her quarrel with Pablo, since she has treated him badly. The 2 Diego scenes were very funny. If he thinks that Cecilia smells bad no, wait till she's on solid food! And he's absolutely right--Pablo can't have 2 novias for all the sensible reasons he mentions. Roberto and Soraya should count their blessings, since they really belong in prison and not just a cheap hotel or apartment.

Eva

Many thanks, SpanProf, for your kind remarks and insightful comments. Yes, sigh, it turned out not to be the mini-recap I had expected to do. I can't remember what author it was who said that it's harder to write in fewer words than in more words, but whoever it was, I'm definitely in agreement.

Lately, I've been enjoying almost every scene involving Diego. The actor who plays him is doing a fantastic job, and the writer(s) have given him some great lines.

I laughed out loud at your remark about "wait till she's on solid food!" You're so right!

BTW, I'm sure you meant Roberto and Cinthia, not Roberto and Soraya. :-) I wish it were easier to edit our posts after they're up. There are so many times when I catch errors I've made, but I almost never think it's worth deleting the post and then reposting a corrected copy.

Eva

ah Juanita, so nice of you to post a wonderful recap on a Friday night.

that Soraya is pretty tough, I was thinking she would rent the house back to the Monteverdes so she could show up every month to throw them out, because of course Robert no longer has a job.

loved the day of the wedding when Soraya gave the honeymooners the ok to misbehave, and we haven't seen them since.

when Marlene brought up the contract with the drivers, they said, we're not slaves, if you can fire us, we can quit.

something I have learned, when you invest in a business and it grows, your investment grows, this is a good deal for both Federica and for Eva, and nice to see Rey is such a good company president.

was it last night JJ brought Eva his file on Silva, he's a cheat, you'll have fun reading about him, he tells Eva.

La Esclava Blanca – Friday, June 10 – Capítulo 37, part 1/3

Angela tells Gabriel about Catalina’s death. Milagros joins them, happy to share the news about Damian getting arrested. She learns about Catalina. They need to change the location of the causa meetings so as to not bother Felipe. At the inn, Manuela does not want the meetings to be there. She also lets it slip to Jesus that Gabriel is important to her. Jesus agrees to have the meetings there from now on and if Manuela doesn’t like it, she can just not be there when they happen. She is not happy. Por esa bendita causa nos van a matar a todos (they’re going to kill us all because of that damn cause).

Victoria gets out of the carriage, telling Bernal she’s hot and wants to go to the river. She sends him back to El Eden alone and asks him not to say anything to Adela.

The General asks Felipe about organizing a funeral for Catalina. Mi hermana no debería estar bajo tierra (my sister should not be underground) is his response. Nicolas shows up and Felipe has murder in his eyes. Nicolas starts giving his más sentido pesame (most heartfelt condolences) but Felipe grabs his gun and yells yo se que todo esto es obra suya (I know this is all your doing) and se lo voy a cobrar (I’m going to make you pay)!

Isabel helps Remedios walk with the crutches that she had Tomas make for her. Adela interrupts them, admonishing Isabel for wasting her time on stupid things instead of going to church. Isabel starts arguing with her about the existence of God – a mí me resulta muy difícil creer en algo que no he visto y que no se pueda comprobar científicamente (it’s very difficult for me to believe in something that I haven’t seen and that can’t be proven scientifically) – but Remedios cuts in and tells Isabel to keep walking with her.

Nicolas is practically begging for his life. Felipe is not backing down. He has always known that Nicolas is un lobo vestido de oveja (a wolf dressed in sheep’s clothing). Alonso and the General manage to talk him down. He gives the gun to the General and walks away. Nicolas still looks terrified.

Victoria lowers herself into the pit with a rope to check out the tunnel. She finds something on the wall and smiles.

Nicolas complains to the General that Felipe had no right to threaten him or his good name, even calling himself intachable (faultless, flawless). The General notes that he has been muy mal rodeado (very badly surrounded) lately thanks to his friendships with Lopez and Caicedo. They need to get to the bottom of this or chaos will reign.

At Caicedo’s, Gracia is about to leave and asks if anyone else is coming with her. They could hide in teh mountains, find a palenque. Diosdado tries to talk her out of it, worried she will get caught, but she still leaves and two other slaves decide to go with her.

Milagros treats Ana’s wounds. Francisco asks what else he can do to help his wife get better and Milagros replies que deje de pegarle (stop hitting her) under her breath. Luckily dejar and pegar have several meanings and she is able to recover by claiming she said que hay que dejar que peguen los emplastos en las heridas para que sanen rapidamente (you need to let the dressings stick to the wounds so they’ll heal quickly). He wants to take her to see a doctor, even though she really shouldn’t be moved in her condition. He sends Milagros back to El Eden, warning her not to say anything.

La Esclava Blanca – Friday, June 10 – Capítulo 37, part 2/3

Talking to Caicedo in jail, Nicolas is angry that Francisco is asking on his own and doing stupid things that could endanger them. Caicedo is more concerned about his current problem of being in jail and all... he asks Nicolas to buy his slaves and he accepts. Caicedo thanks him, me quitas un gran peso de encima (you’re taking a weight off me).

Ana convinces Paca to go to the fiesta to tell Miguel about Francisco being the murderer since no one has heard from Marcos or even knows if he’s still alive. However, when she tells Francisco about the cabildo (gathering), he throws his glass at her and accuses her of abandoning his wife. After she runs away, the traitor Cuno tells him the slaves might be talking about the causa there so he could go and check it out.

Isabel and Remedios walk around El Eden. Isabel knows that Reme likes Trinidad since she looks at him the way she looks at Gabriel. Reme admits she does indeed like him a lot, but he would only reject her. Reme tries to teach her that real life is hard, it is not like what she reads in books. Isabel, ever the optimist, thinks el mundo es como uno quiere que sea (the world is however you want it to be).

Victoria stands nearby and gets their attention. She is all dirty and looks exhausted. She claims she fell while picking flowers. Isabel stalls Adela – by claiming she thought about the God thing again and she wants to confess all her sins, so please pray with her - while Reme gets her inside to clean herself up. Victoria is happy with what she found in the tunnel and she needs to tell Miguel about it.

Nicolas announces to Caicedo’s slaves that they are now his. He orders the dogs out to find the three that escaped. None of them know how to swim, and Gracia is the only one who gets in the river to try to go further. The other two stand on the bank not knowing what to do.

Milagros arrives back at El Eden and breaks the bad news about Catalina to Miguel. Just then Remedios shows up and asks for his help in the house, orders of the Marquesa, but Julian has orders to accompany any slave to the house. Remedios fakes a fall so that they can get Julian away from Miguel, with the help of Milagros who distracts him by saying they can go out on another night.

Adela wants to go have lunch but Isabel says no, I have so many sins still to confess, especially with regards to thoughts about Gabriel... Adela is proud of her and agrees to continue praying.

Victoria tells Miguel about the tunnel and she made a boceto (sketch) of it. Miguel doesn’t seem happy though. He tells them that Catalina was killed.

Julian notes that there is no law prohibiting guards and slaves from having a relationship. Milagros thinks he’s going too fast. He kisses her and she takes a little while to push him away so no one will see them. Too late, Trinidad is spying on them from behind the wall. Julian is all smiles as he leaves. Milagros also smiles after him, touching her lips, and Trinidad has a hilarious look on his face.

Isabel can’t stall Adela any longer. She knocks on Victoria’s door so they can have lunch together. Victoria tries to make room in the closet for Miguel to hide, but Adela opens the door and sees him standing there holding a dress. Victoria says Miguel is bringing Reme’s things to the room since she will be sleeping in there from now on.

Nicolas and his men find Gracia’s body in the river, and take the other two slaves back to El Eden.

La Esclava Blanca – Friday, June 10 – Capítulo 37, part 3/3

Miguel finishes bringing up Reme’s bed to Victoria’s room. On the way out, Tomas wants to talk to him. He knows he’s sad about Catalina. Miguel doesn’t even want to think about the meeting that night. There have been so many deaths already. Tomas reminds him that freedom will be for all the others who come after them, not just themselves. Miguel won’t budge though, asking Tomas if losing another daughter is worth it. Estás dispuesto a pagar ese precio por la libertad (are you ready to pay that price for freedom)? Whoever killed Catalina would do the same to Victoria if they found who she was.

Victoria and Reme talk about Catalina – the one good thing is that maybe her death will speed up the causa. Victoria needs to be even more careful about what she says and does.

Felipe receives the suitcase that Catalina had with her. They didn’t steal anything, which proves she was killed just to send a message to Felipe. The General agrees that is what happened.
Alonso tells his father to rest. The General doesn’t want to though. Uno descansa cuando se muere, y a veces, ni siquiera eso (you rest when you die, and sometimes, not even then). He remarks that Francisco was not present at the raid at Caicedo’s.

Francisco tells his guards and Cuno that he’s going to leave because the lands are cursed. They all agree to go with him. He wants to take some slaves with him, but sell some others, and no one can say anything to anyone, including Ana.

The slaves Nicolas bought from Caicedo arrive at El Eden. Miguel notes that Nicolas’ good luck comes from his friends’ misfortunes. What a coincidence. Julian tries to find places for everyone to sleep inside, but there are too many people. He wants to put some chinchorros (hammocks in Colombian/Venezuelan Spanish) outside. Everyone is grumbling. Trinidad tells Milagros he saw her with Julian; Milagros says so what, I know you like Remedios even though you’ve been acting like a coward. Trinidad still thinks los blancos y los negros no se deben mezclar (whites and blacks should not mix). Just look at what happened with Miguel and his parents. She advises him to go with what he feels and not with what he thinks. She calls him maluco (another Colombian/Venezuelan word for ungrateful) and says life is too short to keep thinking such cucarachas (lies [also: cockroaches, but not in this context obviously]).

Isabel plays detective at dinner and wonders who could have killed Catalina. This tires Adela out and she asks Hilaria to prepare her a bath and bring lots of cognac. Victoria asks Nicolas if he’s going to let the slaves go to the fiesta. Yes, the new and old slaves, so things can return to normal around her. Isabel is happy and kisses his cheek.

Hilaria tells the slaves they can go out, but she doesn’t have time for that tonterías (nonsense) and her ama needs her more than ever. They make fun of her as she leaves. Miguel announces they will meet at the posada (inn) from now on.

Eva. Thanks for the correction, Juanita! As my dear old mother used to say when she mixed up names: "Soraya must have been thinking of me!" And thanks, deb, about the file JJ brought in. Our cat picked that exact moment to ask to be let out, so I missed his explanation and wondered what it was about.

Eva

Many thanks, deb, for your kind words and great comments. I love your idea about Soraya renting back the house to the Monteverdes so she can come each month to kick them out for non-payment. (Though perhaps Cinthia will be a successful breadwinner, cleaning for Soraya's friend who runs children's parties! :-) )

J, with each of your recaps, I become increasingly in awe of your ability! They're so well-written, well-organized, and helpful. Once again, I haven't yet seen the episode, since I was recapping Eva last night, but from your recap I probably have a better sense of what happened than if I had actually seen the episode. And I'm finding the Spanish you include very helpful.

Esclava: J your recap is stellar of course. I feel I barely need to watch the show because of your detailed retelling. Adela will catch Victoria one of these days. I am still sad about Catalina.

I too am in awe of your recaps J, they are just so good.

I have to watch this show twice to do one, the first time to put together the story segments that are all over the place and the second to try to catch the little things they throw at us, and if I wasn't watching with english captions I would be totally lost.

I loved the scene when Nicolas swung by to give Felipe his regards (I sometime wonder if Nicolas thinks he is one of the good guys only doing what needs to be done), and the look in Felipe's eyes, it just stripped Nicolas bare.

it's nice that the General is an honorable man (although he is hardly ever without a drink) and was not dissuaded by Nicolas in suspecting him.

I was surprised that Francisco kept his word and paid Milagros with a bag of coins, but it confuses me that slaves would have money because where would they keep it?

and something I left out of thursday's recap is when Francisco comes to the conclusion, it is everyman for himself.

the english captions referred to Nicolas getting Damian slaves, as renting.

and wow did this ever speak volumes when only Gracia and 2 other slaves left, and the rest stayed, awaiting their fate.

I may be wrong because it's not clear, but I got the idea that Victoria found a plaque on the wall of the tunnel and made a tracing of it, (ah, maybe it had a map, because I think we are talking about miles of tunnels) she is excited about them being their way to freedom.

I thought Isabel was just going to distract Adela so Victoria could get to her room, but then Victoria gets all cleaned up and sends for Miguel and they hang out and chat, she is always so close to getting caught.

did Isabel ask if Adela was going to take a bath IN cognac, and Nicolas replied, no, but it would be a good idea for everyone if she did.

Romy- I too loved Catalina, what a neat person, not sure what Felipe meant by not burying her, cremation?

ESCLAVA

Deb and J- Thank you for the wonderful recaps. I am now catching bits and pieces of the show, so your great retellings help fill in the gaps.

I too worry every time that Victoria is about to be caught. She's just tempting fate much of the time.

Romy- We don't see more black characters in modern day Colombian tns for the same reason we hardly see them in Brazilian tns, or see more indio/mestizo people in Mexican tns, or all of the above in the tns from Miami.

Telemundo...

according to the tv schedule, "¿Quién es quién?" will have a 1 hour gran final Monday 20june16, immediately followed by 1 hour of "La Sombra de Helena" which will be taking over the 2 hour slot.

elsewhere,
in a press release last monday Telemundo announced it has made a deal with Keshet International (KI) to co-develop and produce a new original Spanish-language series to air on Telemundo, what's interesting is, "The development of the Spanish-language series will be led by Perla Farias" (creator of "Baja el mismo cielo")

“Keshet is known for producing powerful, unconventional and bold scripted series"

Esclava" Yes, Vivi you are correct about the lack of black actors in novelas.
