Yago #58: White Lies and Truth Serum
As she’s being kidnapped by Hernan, bound and gagged and
stuffed in the trunk of his car, Selma recalls how her relationship with Fidel
began. She was Camilo’s girlfriend, but she was in love with his married BFF
Fidel and was fighting the mutual attraction. She tells us that she knew
choosing Fidel over Camilo would have consequences, but she preferred to die at
Fidel’s side than to live at Camilo’s.
Julia speaks to Fidel as he packs up his books. He regrets that they are once again running away/escaping from Camilo, as they have many times over the last two decades. Julia gently tells him that they aren’t running away, but are instead starting a new life. She calls him Papa, which nearly brings tears to Fidel’s eyes.
At Casa Guerrero, Yomar and the family fret about why Camilo
is targeting them (taking away Jonas’ recent furniture contract) and if he
knows Yago is Omar. Yomar thinks this could be the case, and everyone panics.
He then admits to them that Sara knows his real identity, which sends them into
a tizzy, as they are sure she betrayed him and told Camilo. Yomar doesn’t think
so, and Sara comes over and pleads her case. She swears she will never betray
Yomar again like she did in the past. She doesn’t think that Camilo knows Yomar’s
real identity, because surely he would have already done something more serious
to them...

Meanwhile, Selma finds herself bound and held prisoner in
Camilo’s bedroom. He enters and she wonders what he will do to her. She points
out that Fidel is a man of honor, and Camilo couldn’t even keep his word (about
the truce). Camilo pulls out a knife and…cuts the duct tape binding her hands
and feet.
Yago goes to see Lucio to demand to know why he and Camilo
are targeting the Guerreros. Lucio denies having knowledge of this, then
wonders why Yago is all up in the Guerrero business, when they are nothing to
him. He wants to know why Yago has stolen them, his family, from Lucio and
turned them against him. Yago scoffs at the irony, and reiterates his warning
to Lucio and his BFF Camilo. He accuses Lucio of being in league with Camilo in
the murder of Ambar. Lucio denies any part in Ambar’s murder and claims to
just be Camilo’s business partner.
Bruno brings Matias back from riding class, and Matias very
coldly requests that Sara follow him for a serious talk. He scolds her for not
telling him first about marrying Camilo, and then states that he is not going
back to live in Camilo’s mansion. He either wants to live with the Guerreros or
his dad. Sara agrees to let him live with the Guerreros.
Camilo is treating captive Selma to a meal, which she refuses
to eat. They argue across the long table. She accuses him of breaking the
truce. He thinks that’s fair, since she and Fidel are about to take HIS
daughter out of the country. She reminds him that Julia is THEIR daughter. He
has a deal for her—the deeds to Casino Paraiso in exchange for them returning
Julia to him. This is laughable to Selma (and Viewerville). Camilo claims Julia
is HIS daughter because he raised her. Selma points out again that that’s
because he STOLE her. Camilo loses his cool and says he did it because Fidel
stole HER (Selma) from him!
They both flash back to the day when Selma finally gave in
to her feelings for Fidel. He had come to her dressing room to say goodbye
forever. He was leaving because he loved her and couldn’t be around her anymore—his
wife and her boyfriend be damned. They kissed which led to lovemaking. As they
basked in the afterglow, Camilo entered, saw them, and then retreated quietly
to look forlornly at the engagement ring he was just about to present. In the
present, Camilo has just admitted this to Selma, and she wonders why he later
proposed to her, when he already saw her in the arms of Fidel.
In another part of town, Abel is contemplating the
engagement ring he has just bought for Julia. He tells Teo that he believes
this is his last chance to have the life he has always wanted. (Do you hear the
clang of those anvils?) Just as Teo and Abel are speaking about love and second
(and third, and fourth) chances, the rehab center calls to tell Teo that Katia
has escaped the clinic by jumping through a window, and then holding the guards
at bay at gunpoint.
Camilo finally answers Selma, as we see the flashback to his
proposal. It was the same evening of Selma and Fidel’s first lovemaking, and
she had just come back to her dressing room after performing. She was prepared
to break up with Camilo, but he asked her to let him speak first. He made a
flowery speech about his love for her and got down on one knee to pop the
question. Either out of guilt or obligation, or both, Selma accepted, just as
Fidel entered the room. Camilo pulled them both into an embrace and told them
that they were the most important people in his life. Selma and Fidel burned
with guilt and shame and let the farce continue. In the present, Camilo admits
that he proposed because he hoped that with time she would eventually want to
stay with him.
Lucio enters Camilo’s foyer unseen and overhears as Selma
points out to Camilo that Julia needs to be with her true family, and that
Fidel, not he, is Julia’s father. He lets her go, but wants to know one thing
first--- did she ever love him? Selma sadly tells him no—she always loved
Fidel.
Selma finally gets home to a worried Fidel (who thought she
had gone off to sing at a club). She tells him what happened, and quickly calms
him down. She wants them to continue on with their plan to leave, and their set
timeframe, just with more caution. She doesn’t want them to rush and make
mistakes. They meet with Julia to give her the new passports/identities for her
and Abel. The plan is to first go to China, and then to Iceland—a great place
to have and raise a child. Julia is sad about leaving everything behind, but
also worried about Fidel. “I know Camilo would die for me, but I also know he
would kill you.”
Katia has finally reached her destination—her old flophouse,
where the pusher who turned her on to heroin is still the queen bee. Katia
tells her she’s trying to get off the hard stuff, and knows the pusher also
sells methadone to help addicts ease off the drugs. Katia puts her veins (and
life) into the pusher’s hands, and instead of methadone gets a shot of a potent
cocktail of heroin and pentothal—the truth serum drug. The pusher then calls a
mystery person to inform them that Katia came calling, just as they supposed,
and she’s down for the count.
Lucio quickly arrives and pays the pusher a fat wad of cash
for a job well done. He knew when he found her after researching Katia’s past
that she would come in handy. He then paws and kisses Katia (blech) as he asks
her all about the location of Fidel’s headquarters and his men. Under the
influence of heroin and the truth serum, Katia is powerless to resist.
Teo, Yago and Abel are in the middle of freaking out at the
rehab clinic folks, when a staff member runs in to say that Katia has just turned
up at the front gates, and is OD-ing. They manage to save her, but the head of
the clinic tells Teo that they need to take stricter measures with her. No
calls and no visits, from anybody, for a while. He agrees and signs the paperwork.
A worried Yago speaks with Abel about what they are going to do about Katia.
Abel assures him that although Katia has her problems, she’s trustworthy,
unlike Sara.
Sara, meanwhile, is giving Camilo the cold shoulder. She
demands to know why he’s trying to ruin Jonas Guerrero’s business. She points
out that he has nothing to do with her past with that family. Camilo snaps, and
says he does because, “You’re still in
love with FIDEL…uhm…Omar!” Sara (the Selma stand-in) is confused how he
could have confused Omar’s name with Fidel’s, and about what Omar (who is dead)
has to do with her and Camilo. Flustered by his blooper, and not wanting to
reveal what he knows about Yago/Omar, Camilo backs down and says he will return
Jonas’ contract to him tomorrow.
A bit later, Lucio continues to try to manipulate Camilo
into doing what he wants—break the truce. Camilo refuses. He’s going to keep
his word to Julia and Selma. Hernan arrives and shares the information Lucio
gave him, of course not revealing his source, about Fidel’s lair and defenses.
Camilo still won’t break the truce. Lucio tries another route—Camilo should allow
Fidel to leave with Selma, Julia and Camilo’s grandchild, and THEN break the
truce by attacking when Yago is the one in charge. The idea of losing Julia and
his grandchild doesn’t sit well with Camilo, so Lucio tries yet another tactic.
They can invade Fidel’s lair, take Julia by force, and retreat, all without
shedding a drop of blood, if they use the element of surprise to neutralize
Fidel and his men. It’s a win-win. Camilo agrees to this plan.
While all this drama and plotting is going on, Yago somehow
finds time to ambush Ximena while she’s attending an art exhibition to beg her
to come back to him. He has even managed to get the gallery to schedule a show of
her art work the next month. Ximena is unimpressed with him and the bold
romantic gesture, tells him off, and leaves.
While smirking at his ability to manipulate Camilo into
thinking they are going to spill no blood while attacking Fidel, Yago and their
crew, Lucio cleans his gun and fills it with bullets. Meanwhile, across town,
Katia finally wakes up in her locked rehab room. She foggily remembers telling
Lucio everything about Fidel’s location and their defenses, and starts to
panic. She bangs on the door and window, begging to be let out so that she can
warn her team. “Let me out! They’re going
to kill everyone!”

I would like to understand why Selma accepted Camilo's proposal, especially since she appeared to be ready to break up with him just before he proposed. Was she momentarily unable to resist his charm? Did she blurt out an affirmative because he had taken her by surprise?
And poor Katia. I know she's not allowed access to visitors and phones, but could the clinic maybe relay a message to Yago & Co.? It's kind of important!

Julie- I couldn't believe that I got BOTH episodes where Lucio got to paw Katia. Yuck! Unfortunately, after pointing a gun at half the staff and escaping, I don't think the rehab staff will be inclined in the least to listen to Katia's ravings and pass on a message.

Steve- I think Lucio now has everything he wanted from Katia (except maybe to sleep with her, or lick her some more). I think she's in more danger of taking her own life out of guilt.
Team Yago is surely going to blame Sara for both Camilo knowing his real identity and Team Camilo/Lucio finding out where the lair is located. This was sure an yet intense episode, I screamed inside for Selma&Katia to save themselves! Luckily Selma made it out unscratched. Speaking of which I kind of felt bad for Young Camilo when he saw Fidel&Selma sleeping together just before he wanted to propose to her. Almost any man would lose their minds especially someone who was raised on the streets. Fidel acted like a complete jerkoff.
I hoorayed when Ximena rejected Yago. Ximena shouldn't be anyone's Rebound woman no matter how good looking the men appears to be !
The Katia scenes made me irk. Just when Katia thought that she would get a health dose of methadone, she get's injected with the same garbage. I liked Lucio before but right now he just sickens me.

I too felt kind of bad for young Camilo, but he got himself into a worse situation by proposing AFTER he discovered Selma and Fidel together. He was begging for heartbreak.

Oh dear. Can't watch this. Glad you got the recap up so quickly Vivi so that I know Selma is alright (for now!) but clearly things are about to go south. Katia is indeed the weak link and it's setting up all kinds of horror. And why in heck wasn't she being given methadone in the clinic. Do not understand that. Oh well...Thanks amiga mia. And so sorry you got two Lucio grope episodes. Not fair!

Well, they certainly picked the right actress to play Selma. She is very appealing...very womanly. Of course all the selections of actors have been wonderful in this. First rate production. But sometimes, I'm just too much of a wuss to watch!
Judy- I like how Selma's not some botoxed middle-aged woman trying to look young, nor typically "pretty." Yet very attractive and elegant. The actress they chose to play her younger version is also a great match for both her and Julia. Really good casting.
I hope we get a time jump at some point and Julia goes back to her red hair and old style. Enough of this dark hair and grungy dark clothes.

I don't know why they brought in methadone. Methadone has a much longer half life than heroin -- an addict doesn't have to get a fix every 5 hours with it. But once you get on Methadone, it is much harder to get off than heroin -- after 5 days suffering withdrawals you can be off heroin. But methadone is likely to require something like a month of withdrawals. Methadone can block heroin so that you don't get the drug euphoria from heroin any more, but the price is likely to be an eternal dependency on methadone. My opinion of methadone, having worked with methadone patients for something like 3 years, is that methadone persons act rather normal -- they may have impeded sex urge & constipation; & they will probably continually have to be increasing the dose slowly.
Based on my experience now 10 years old (there may be newer treatments now) is that for heroin addicts the choices are 1) incarceration for 3 months, physically unable to get opioids, 2) methadone, 3) a miracle (if the Son shall set you free, you shall be free indeed). And going to a methadone clinic to pick up doses costs time, may require you to get up at 5 AM every day, and can cost a lot of money.
For some people methadone maintenance may be a way to control chronic pain, like a neck injury. I have never seen methadone injected. I am not sure that it is easy to get injectable methadone. But taking a stiff dose of methadone when you have not worked up to it, is a good way to stop breathing & die/

Cathyx- I also thought of Flavio and Sofie in their roles in Yo No, and thought they must be having a bit of fun with the audience. I'm sure they are good friends in real life, making those scenes easier to act out. They were both also in Para Volver a Amar, but their two characters never interacted with each other.

Also, Fidel was married when Cam proposed. Selma may have realized that she made a big mistake sleeping with Fidel and saw accepting Cam as a way to set herself straight and stop the affair from going further.
I have a soft spot for the older Fidel, just because I like the actor. But when you think about it, the younger Fidel set off this whole dreadful chain of events (one chain anyway) by his betrayal of his wife, the mother of his two sons, and his betrayal of his best friend.
He had no business pursuing Selma. He did so, literally behind his friend's back, even while knowing how in love Camilo was. And no doubt knowing how much his own wife loved him.
And for that betrayal, his wife's heart was broken, their sons killed (even greater heartbreak) and his new wife's heart broken, when their daughter Fabiola was kidnapped.
Quite a thoroughly rotten piece of work when you think about it.
And notwithstanding, there is something very endearing about the older actor they have picked to play Fidel. Very conflicted.

I tend to agree with Judy.but I don't think Young Fidel could have controlled his feelings. It seems to me that Fidel&Camilo were at first wooing Selma because of a bet ( They were always competing with eachother) but then things quickly turned deadly when actual love became involved.
Judy- Indeed, what young Fidel did wasn't right. But from the flashback we had of him, Selma, his sons and Fabiana spending time together, and later when his ex-wife called to tell him what had happened to his sons, its seems his ex-wife moved on with her life. Infidelity happens, people break up, get divorced, share custody of kids, and move on. Camilo is the only one in this mix who couldn't move on, and instead took things to a deadly/vindictive level.

Are you saying that somewhere they post Thursday's episode (aired 11PM - midnight in central zone) later than that? When & where would that be? Are you saying that in some areas when I have seen an episode Wed night, it still will be shown later on the West coast? No, I don't want to post any spoilers. BTW, I have an awful hard time navigating this site, reading episode summaries in chronological order, episode by episode.

Enoch, YOU saw Wednesday night's episode, but this recap is for the Tuesday episode. The Wednesday episode recap will be posted in about five minutes. The recaps for Yago are being posted later on the day after they air, because many of us can't watch this show until it turns up on Hulu or on other sources.
Enoch- For Yago, we don't post the recap until the next afternoon because most people are not staying up past midnight (when the episodes air) to watch and don't get to watch their recording until the next evening. Vivi...there's the "classicist argument" and the "romantic argument". The classicist values order and loyalty, so while "el corazón no se manda" one's actions can be controlled. Therefore, one honors vows (fidelity, 'till death do us part)and consciously chooses not to hurt others (in this case, Fidel's first wife and his best friend).
The Romantic Argument of course is the opposite. One keeps vows and promises if one feels like it, but one follows one's heart and feelings if they lead elsewhere. Alas, feelings are changeable, often in the space of a day, certainly in the space of a year or two. And honoring agreements and covenants is part of what makes an orderly, trustworthy, viable society. The Romantic Approach leads to chaos. But also excitement and changeability for those who are getting what they want. For those who are left behind, not so much.
As you can tell, I'm a "Classicist"! The premise of most of these telenovelas runs directly counter to what I believe and hold to. But IT'S IN SPANISH!!! So I'm going with it.
And I love our discussions on the blog line. Always good to see and appreciate the other point of view.

Judy- I fall more on the Classicist end of the scale myself. But I'm also realistic enough to know that when it's over, it's over, and there's no point hanging on and crying for an eternity about it. Interestingly enough, the folks on the Romantics side who follow their heart, whomever it hurts be damned, also seem to be the ones who have the hardest time letting go and moving on when it's the other person who ends it.
