J - I'm late to the Patio Party but I want to thank you for your recap of Friday's episode. I still have not had time to watch it yet, but the recap was great and I appreciate all your work! Thank you!!!
Yes, thanks for Friday recap! Ahhh telenovela world, where you supervise a move of furniture next door wearing five-inch heels, light pants and a white spaghetti-strap lace top!
JudeG - I know! LOL and I loved that Brady Bunch breakfast (or was it dinner?) a couple episodes ago. I kept wondering if Alice would show up.
Wow, the captcha verification is being super picky and irritating today......!

doris- I assume the current novelas will all be finished by then,
but like all things Telemundo, we'll have to wait and see.
I've just realized that all three evening telenovelas will be pre-empted on Thursday by the Latin American Music Awards show. I've just changed the Telemundo y Más cover pages to reflect this, but I thought I'd mention it here as well.
Unlike the food at Stella’s house, this episode was 75% fat and not very nutritious.
We again see Manuel and Stella kissing. They make such a great pair! Then the usual dragging out of the love theme, like putting weight on the tone arm of the turntable. And Gata enters without knocking. She “Oh My Gods” like Majo but with a much worse accent in English. She moves toward the two of them asking someone to pinch her. She can’t believe that the nun she knows is having an affair. She’s shocked, shocked.
Manuel, always quick on the uptake, starts begging Silvana to forgive him, saying it was an impulsive thing and he’s sorry he did it. After he leaves, Gata doesn’t appear to have bought this. She says to Chivis: “!Que cínica eres! Con un romance con el guapissimo del terminal. Ahora entiendo porque quieres separar del ruco de tu marido para comerse este bombón!”
We get a very long and overwrought scene with the Three Stooges. Dominique and Poncho are starving having to subsist on the organic lettuce Stella is feeding them. She insists the diet is good for them; it’s a detox of bad things for them. She says she’s so full from the organic lunch that she’s going to take a nap. Dom says he’s hungry enough to eat toothpaste right from the tube. He tells Poncho he’s had to tighten his belt a notch. Poncho scoffs, saying he looks the same as always.
Dom and Poncho decide to sneak out for some tacos, telling Stella they’re going out to get some things for the Yorkie. [OK, so these are adults living in the same house and have to make an excuse to leave?] They open her door and catch her red-handed about to bite into a large cheeseburger!
We get another family meal at the Gallardo residence. This time it’s with Angie, Jorge, Lupita, and Pedrito. Lupita says that Angie isn’t a bruja but Majo is! She goes on to pity poor Andrés. Then she looks across the table and pointedly says that some people are being silly hiding how they really feel about someone else. She goes on to ask what kind of couple Jorge and Margarita are. Pedrito pipes up that they fight all the time.
Chivis goes on with this tiresome routine of blaming Manuel for kissing her. The staging is interesting with the contrasts. Gata has on some black jacket with sequins, while Chivis is wearing a snow white top.
The male Stooges chew Stella out for the cheeseburger. She says she only lapsed the once and excuses herself by saying she exercises a lot. Steve calls just then and says he wants to visit her at her mansion! Stella tells the guys that she has Steve eating out of her hand. She tells them she can’t wait to see Manuel’s face when he sees her with this “playbill”. Rolling his eyes, Dom corrects her: “Playboy!”
María Jose has come to Casa Gallardo to visit her sisters after seeing her mother next door. She embraces each of them and says that she’s made things up with her mother. Of course, Vicente comes home then. She leaves quickly. He follows her outside and they have the same conversation they always have. He says he loves her and knows that she loves him. She tells him she’s moving up the wedding to Andrés.
Don Benito gives Trini a box with a white tulle dress inside. She thinks he’s given her a wedding dress! Very gently he tells her that it’s a First Communion dress for Lupita. She’s pretty nice to him during this whole scene.
Vicente tells Majo about going to the university to study business administration.
Finally, her back to the wall, Stella offers Dom and Poncho some tacos if they’ll help her with her plan regarding Steve.
Some kind of big truck rolls up to Chivis’ house and some officials knock at her door telling her they’re there for the embargo. She quickly calls Manuel to let him know it’s happening. We see that Antonio José is watching the house and sees the big truck.
Trini comes home and does a good job of telling the officials that her poor daughter has three children, etc., etc.
After these guys leave, Trini, Manuel, and Chivis rejoice about the plan working. Trini is definitely on her best behavior tonight. She effusively thanks Manuel for helping keep all their things from the embargo and schlepping them back and forth.
We see Stella’s plan to fool Steve unfold. He comes to her real house. She’s wearing black with this silly black net sort of bow in her hair. The story she tells is that this is her servants’ house and she’s there in solidarity because Dom’s mother just died. Stella spins her tale on and on, describing an old, stooped over mother. Dom comes down and over-eggs the pudding with sobbing hysterics.
Trini gives Lupita the dress; she’s thrilled. Lupita then goes outside to leave a note in that same tree for her father. We see that AJ is watching her do this. For a moment I almost feel sorry for him. He sneaks down the street, collar raised and sunglasses on. [People in telenovelas always think that sunglasses are a disguise!]
The two detectives spot AJ and the chase is on.
Lupita, back in her house, tells Trini she asked the Virgen for her father to come to her First Communion. Trini tells her to remember that sometimes the folks up in heaven are too busy to grant every single wish.
Stella continues her mourning over Dom’s “mother” in the car with Steve. But when he asks her for the woman’s name, she can’t come up with it.
We see AJ running pretty fast for a fat guy. At first he jumps into a dumpster, but doesn’t stay there long enough. He gets out with no garbage on him and sprints down the street with the two detectives in pursuit.
novelera - Thank you for the great recap! Sorry it was a lot of silly filler. I'll try to make time to watch it today.
"We again see Manuel and Stella kissing. " Did you mean Chivis? (i hope so!!!)
I love that Stella's been eating hamburgers on the sly and got busted. LOL
Hopefully those cops will catch AJ.
The whole Steve thing has really ventured into telenovela beanie hat territory. So maybe this will wrap up in November in time for Martres. Better than dragging it out with dumb filler a la Looneyvision.
Many thanks, novelera, for this excellent recap. I loved your characterization at the start: "Unlike the food at Stella’s house, this episode was 75% fat and not very nutritious." Also your describing Dom's absurdly over-the-top performance for Steve as "over-eggs the pudding with sobbing hysterics."
What is it about all these trusting telenovela folks? They live in a fairly iffy metropolitan area, but they all seem to leave their doors unlocked. Gata's not the only one to come in unannounced and unwanted. Indeed, I half expected that the embargo guys would return, this time without knocking, just as Chivis, Manuel, and Trini were celebrating their success in thwarting the embargo.
I had the same thought as you about Dom and Poncho feeling they had to tell Stella where they were going. Then again, they really are children, but why should two children ask the third child for permission?
The scene at the table with Lupita, Angie, Jorge, and Pedrito was a bit puzzling to me. Why should Lupita, who has always adored Majo, claim that Majo is a bruja? I know that she's disappointed that Majo has left home, but still... Also, IIRC, Lupita made it clear that Angie and Benji are an item, and she (Lupita) has been pushing Angie to be Benji's novia.
Well, I finally got one prediction right. In an earlier recap, I said I thought that Trini had an ulterior motive in moaning to DB about how expensive a first communion dress is and how can she explain that to a 10-year old. Sure enough, DB buys what looks to be a rather costly first communion dress for Lupita. I continue to wonder why DB is so enamored of Trini. Then again, that's true of several other relationships in this novela as well: what do Andrés and Vicente see in Majo, what does Angie see in Jorge, what does Jorge see in Margarita, what does anyone see in Stella?
Muchas gracias, novelera.
Well, as predicted, Majo is now using the excuse that she is sacrificing her own happiness to marry Andres so that her family can be financially secure. Whatever! That's such bs. Get a job!
Thanks for the info about the next martres, deb. I don't know what they're planning to do with Silvana since we're not even half way through the episodes yet, and there should be a good 3 months to go. Maybe move it to the afternoon slot like they did with Quién es Quién?
I'm a bit confused about how MaJo thinks that marrying Andres will help her family financially. They'll have one less mouth to feed, that's all. Unless she thinks Andres will then bankroll Chivis et al?!
thanks so much for the recap novelera!
I think my favorite part in the show was when Chivis broke into a smile while she was throwing Manuel out (after kissing her), and her back was turned to Gata.
did Dom say he put some mentholated ?? creme on his face to help him cry?
Majo is a generally self-centered, lazy snot, but that seems to come from incredible immaturity rather than a personality flaw. She does truly care about her family, and maybe she really thinks that Andres's money will help them all out. Immature and has no clue about reality, but not evil. Speaking of...
Yea! No Margarita this episode! She is just a jerk.
Kelly
Also I'm moving in a couple of weeks, so if anyone knows where I can get some movers pumps and a white sexy tank top, please let me know. Otherwise it'll be a crappy old t-shirt and flips flops. Even Stella wouldn't sink that low.
Kelly
Novelera--Thank you for the recap. Very fluid, readable, enjoyable. The eye sees what it wants to see and skips over inconsistencies. I didn't even notice the Manuel/Stella gaff until someone else mentioned it. I had to go back and see it for myself. I "saw" Manuel and Chivis in my mind's eye. Yup, 75% fat, but I'm glad we got to taste the 1/2 a kiss again.
Kelly--I'm trying to picture Chivis in flip-flops and an old t-shirt doing anything at all. Impossible. Was she even cooking without an apron? I have old t-shirts to cook in but wear an apron for company.
Vicente, my boy, you keep singing the same old song. She's not listening. I bet it hurt when MoJo told him she was moving up the wedding date. I thought she had already decided to put it off for a bit. Did I miss someone pressuring her? Mama Laura, Andres?
Juanita - I am thanking you in advance for your recap of Tuesday nite's episode. (I won't be able to read it until late this afternoon)
I still haven't had time to watch Friday's episode. I'll have some cheese with my "whine" here at the Patio. Gah...
I thank all y'all* dear recappers for keeping me current and up to date with the life and trials of Chivis and Papi~sigh~Chulo!!!
*all y'all is the Southern equivalent of Ustedes ;-)
Antonio José is running from the police. He eludes them by ducking into what looks like a nursing home. An aide comes out of the building pushing a man in a wheelchair with a blanket covering his head. One of the policemen comes over and pulls the blanket off the man's head. The aide gets angry; the man is not supposed to be exposed to the sun. The officer explains that he's trying to find a fugitive. The aide tells him he's looking in the wrong place: this is a home for war veterans (un hogar de veteranos de guerra). The policeman walks away. Another aide comes out pushing another man in a wheelchair with a blanket over his head. [Yup, you guessed it!] She brings him to a van taking veterans somewhere. We see AJ look out of the van's window as it leaves.
At the salsadromo, Angie is dancing with a chair, as Benji watches. She admits that she's very happy: the embargo won't happen again, and Majo has made up with Chivis. Benji gets down on his knees with a bouquet in his hands and asks Angie to be his novia. She accepts. She continues to be very happy until she spots Jorge. Her face falls.
Majo has returned to Andrés's house and is telling him about the embargo and about her discussion with her mother. She tells him that she realized while talking with her mother that she wants to marry him as soon as possible. She says that she's resolved things with her mother, and she can't wait forever for her father to return; she wants to get on with her life, and her life is with Andrés. He's ecstatic, not realizing that what's motivating her is not love but her expectation that marrying him will improve her family's financial situation. [I originally wrote "not realizing that she sees him as a cash cow," but that seemed somewhat too crass. Maybe.]
Back at Chivis' house, Trini tells Chivis that she appreciates all the help Manuel has provided, but she doesn't like his being so close to Chivis. There's a knock at the door and Chivis goes to answer it, expecting Manuel. Oops, it's the two detectives again. Somewhat exasperated, she tells them again that she has no idea where Antonio José is. One of the detectives informs her that they've just seen him in front of her house. She assures them that if he does show up, she'll call them and turn him over to them. The detective asks whether he and his partner can come in and look for AJ in her house. "Of course," she replies. "As soon as you bring me a judge's order, I'll let you come in."
After they leave, Trini is concerned that if AJ has been watching them, he knows about the embargo, he knows about everything. "Yes," replies Chivis, "and as usual he's done nothing to help us. I'm not going to let him get us involved in something worse" (Yo no voy a permitir que nos involucre en algo peor).
Antonio José, sweating profusely, has made it back to his hotel. He pulls out his suitcase and starts packing. He re-reads Lupita's most recent letter to him, and he also looks at the family photos that he is once again placing in his suitcase.
Andrés tells his mother that Majo has decided that she wants to get married as soon as possible. His mother mentions all the preparations that she needs to make. Majo interrupts to say that she'd prefer a small, simple ceremony. If the situation were different, she tells his mother, she'd love to have a grand wedding with 300 guests and all the trappings. However, given her family's difficult situation, she doesn't think this is the right time for such a grand affair.
In response to Majo's wish for a simple ceremony, Andrés' mother says something I'm not sure I understand: Entonces, yo me quedo con la ilusión de la boda magnifica de mi único hijo, which I think means something like "Then I'll stay with/hold onto the dream of the magnificent wedding of my only child." I'm not sure exactly how to take this. Perhaps a better translation would make her thought and intention clearer. In response to Andrés' somewhat reproachfully saying ¡Mamá!, she turns toward him, sort of smiles, and says "I know that we talked about this, my love. It's your life and I know you will make a good decision" (Ya se que eso lo platicamos, mi amor. Es tu vida y se que vas a tomar una buena decision). She ends by saying that they can count on her and her husband for whatever they want, so I suppose she's being supportive, but for some reason, I'm not convinced.
His mother leaves. Andrés then gives Majo a box containing his grandparents' wedding rings. He puts hers on her, and then she does the same for him. All throughout these scenes with Andrés, Majo never seems joyous, and she never uses the verb amar to describe her feelings for him, but rather querer. I was a little surprised that his mother didn't seem to pick up on this.
At the salsadromo, Benji asks Jorge whether he's heard the news (of the noviazgo). Jorge says yes, whereupon Benji asks "Aren't you going to congratulate me? Seeing that I achieved something that you were never able to" (Ya que logré algo que te nunca pudiste). [Ow! Benji's been winning me over, but that statement seems needlessly mean.] Not surprisingly, Jorge is upset. When his boss asks him why he's not paying attention to the clients, he says he's fed up with everything, and he resigns.
Vicente too is at the salsadromo. He's not in a good mood, and when Poncho comes over with two young women, one of whom makes a play for Vicente, Vicente apologetically brushes her off. He doesn't feel in the mood to dance. Poncho accuses Vicente of becoming a fresa because he has enrolled in the university. Soon afterward, Jorge asks Vicente for a ride home, and the two of them leave.
Chivis talks with Manuel about her confusion and frustration concerning AJ. On the one hand, she wishes the police would catch him and put an end to all this. On the other, she thinks about how horrible this would be for Lupita, indeed, for everyone. Manuel says AJ is putting everyone at risk. Chivis says she doesn't believe that he's going to return to the house, she thinks he wants to go far away. She just wishes the nightmare would end and they could all be peaceful. Manuel embraces her reassuringly.
Now that the embargo threat is over, Trini has decided to leave Don Benito's house and return home. DB struggles to bring her heavy suitcase down the stairs. He tells her that he wishes she would stay another night. Trini replies that people would start to talk. DB says "If we were in a different state, all would be different." Trini pretends not to know what he's talking about. "What state? California?" She seems to be trying to get him to propose marriage, but he seems afraid of being too forward, and finally, in response to Trini's repeatedly asking "What state are you talking about?" he says "The state of heaven, where we'll all be together and share like siblings." Trini is (or pretends to be) upset that he's talking about death, and eventually, she returns home.
Stella, in her black mourning dress and a huge black bow in her hair, has returned with Steve to his house. She goes on about how sad she is and how supportive of her employees. He says he doesn't understand why someone hasn't conquered her heart. "Ah," she tells him, "you don't know how hard it is for women like me, so beautiful, so intelligent, so rich. People are interested in my body and my money, not my heart." [!!!!] Steve assures her there are men who are interested in her big heart. He moves closer. She tells him to stop, she doesn't want another disappointment. The conversation between them continues, sounding like something from a very bad soap opera, and the music reinforces this impression. Finally he says, "Forgive me, Stella, I've failed you" (Perdón, Stella, te he fallado). He says he will tell her his history.
Vicente and Jorge return to their house and see Lucha and Mauro in a prolonged kiss. Mauro leaves, and Vicente tells Lucha to enjoy it while it lasts. Lucha asks why they've come home so early, and she learns that Angie and Benji are novios and Jorge has quit his job. Lucha advises Jorge to break off with Margarita. "It's obvious that you're in love with Angie." Vicente tells him that if Angie doesn't pay attention to you (no te pela), someone else will come along who you'll like. Lucha adds, "It's obvious that you stopped being interested in Margarita quite a while ago" (Es obvio que a ti te dejó de gustar Margarita hace mucho tiempo).
Margarita, meanwhile, is lying on the couch in her house when she gets a text message from Benji telling her he's Angie's novio. She texts back, "Does Jorge know?" Benji replies, "Yes, he saw the whole show, and from the front row." Margarita is gleeful. She texts back "Good! Not another word about this." Angie's loving novio replies, "It's a deal" (Trato hecho).
Another supposedly loving guy, Steve, is telling Stella about his history. He says he never thought that the Countess of Strafford had money problems until that terrible night. She was on the phone with a friend, "whose name I can't tell you because the friend is a public figure, a movie actress." He then "accidentally" drops the name Scarlett and makes Stella promise that she won't tell anyone. Stella assures him he can confide in her. [Yup, just as she can confide in him.] He continues with his tale of woe, ending with his being stood up at the altar in his custom-made Versace suit. He tells Stella that his experience is why he's able to understand her fear of involvement. But, he adds, it's better to suffer for having loved too much than not having tried. He adds, "what's the point of having so much luxury, so many properties, so much money, if I don't have a woman with whom to share it, a woman who loves me for who I am and not for all the millions that I have?" The two of them embrace and drop onto the couch. The modest curtain falls, so Viewerville doesn't have to look away.
The scene moves back to Chivis and Manuel. They have finished moving all her furniture, etc. back to her house. Chivis raises one more point before bidding him goodnight: she doesn't want to continue doing business with Cata. Even though they'll lose a good deal of money, she doesn't want to see Cata again. He agrees. I'm not sure whether he says he too wants to stop dealing with Cata or whether he says he'll go it alone. At first I thought he was OK with stopping, but then Chivis says Cata will still be looking for him, and that he has never been sufficiently clear with Cata. She describes his behavior with Cata as blando, which I think means soft, malleable. Manuel doesn't agree: "I was strong enough to take the blame for the kiss, and you call me blando." Nonetheless, he agrees that they'll stay far, far away from la loca, even though it costs them a lot of money. She says she tries to imagine a future where she's happy, enjoying her grandchildren. He adds, "With only one balcony."
Poncho returns to Stella's to find Dominique in tears. Dom tells him, "With that stupid wake, we invoked death, and when you invoke death, it comes. Murió." At first, Poncho fears that Stella has died, but Dom informs him that it was Francisco Javier, Stella's dog. The dog ate and then suddenly died. Poncho asks, "Did you give him chicken without the bones?" No, says Dom, I gave him a whole wing. Poncho then calls Dom an assassin. Stella returns home from Steve's very happy. She asks for the dog, and they tell her that the dog is asleep, and they all start whispering so as not to wake him.
Benji brings Angie home after the salsadromo event. After Benji leaves, Jorge calls to her and tells her he's been waiting for her. She asks him whether he quit his job because of her. Yes, says Jorge. "I know I'm the novio of Margarita, but it's you I care for. Te quiero mucho."
The suspicious members of Viewerville were right!! Steve's boss comes home. Steve is now dressed like a high-class servant, and he tells his boss that all is well with the house and the car. Stella calls, and Steve tells her he can't see her that day, he has business negotiations to attend to. His boss starts to speak, and Steve abruptly hangs up.
Rafael is in his car when the passenger side door opens and Antonio José gets in. Rafael is very nervous that the police may see them together. AJ tells Rafael "I need you to hide me for several days. The police are on my trail." Rafael suggests he change hotels and offers him money. AJ insists that Rafael hide him, reminding him that if he (AJ) gets caught, Rafael will go down with him.
Steve is talking with his boss when there's a knock at the door. Steve opens the door, sees Stella, and tries to close the door on her. She comes in, and asks why he's dressed like a servant. He claims that he's in a performance. Then they hear his boss calling him. Stella asks whether he's gay. No, that's my uncle. Stella won't leave and comes in to find out who this person is. She speaks in her usual loud Stella voice, and the boss asks rather haughtily, "Who is this ordinaria? Stella is indignant. The boss then tells Steve to hurry up and "get my car ready, because I have to go out." Stella is taken aback. "You're the servant??" Steve says yes, and adds that he recognizes that he exaggerated a little, and that he lied to her, but his feelings are intact, firm. "When you want, we'll get married" (Cuando tu quieras, nos casamos). We see a stunned Stella as the episode ends.
Juanita, thank you for delivering a WooHoo of a recap. I actually enjoyed re-reading about Poncho and Dom's antics relative to the dog. I wonder if they will go out and buy a replacement and end up with a male dog for further hijinks.
We've all been waiting for Steve to be unmasked and you did a WooHoo job of it. Kudos.
I read sarcasm in Mama Laura's tone when telling Andres she'll live with just the illusion of a big wedding--instead of the real thing. I think she's going to be the one who drives the wedge between MaJo and Andres to pull them apart. One of the two of them is going to be disappointed. I think Andres is better prepared to start life over without MaJo than she would be without Andres (and his money), even though they both have more suitable partners waiting in the wings. The sooner they wake up from this illusion of theirs, the better for us.
Muchas gracias, Anita and SpanProf, for your very interesting and helpful comments. Anita, I was very interested in your take on Laura. You may well be right. Certainly I have a somewhat uneasy feeling about her. At the same time, SpanProf makes a good point when she says Laura is right to be apprehensive.
And yes, SpanProf, Stella and Steve are playing the same game. With probably the same lack of success.
Helen
thanks so much Juanita for a very detailed and wonderful recap!
for all her faults, I find MaJo one of the most interesting characters of the story, yes I think she justifies marrying Andres for the money, but I think the real reason is she is running from Vicente, who provokes emotions and feelings inside of her that she doesn't understand can't control.
and we have had a glimpse of what has touched Vicente, waiting for more.
Juanita- Great recap!!! And thank you or the phrase translations, etc.
So, Steve was not the owner of the house & car, etc. Well, good to know he's not a "bad guy" either! Hopefully he and Stella will continue with their ... um ... relationship.
How awful about the poor dog. Telenovela beanie hat on because I know that no animals were hurt or died in the filming of this. Good PSA of sorts, though, perhaps too many people do not know that chicken bones will kill a dog by puncturing its internal organs etc..
Thanks so much for this wonderfully detailed recap, Juanita. I missed the episode, so I really appreciate it.
Well, no surprise that Steve is the butler. He and Stella are made for each other.
Deb- I would actually feel better about Majo if she were actually staying with Andres to help her family (and not just using it as an excuse). The fact is that she's marrying Andres to help HERSELF. She's not confused. She knows she's in love with Vicente and not with Andres. The deciding factor for her is class and money. If Vicente were from the "right" class and/or was rich, she wouldn't hesitate. She and Andres had already broken up, so it wasn't like she the hard choice to make of breaking up with someone when she had feelings for someone else. She CHOSE to go back to Andres, with her eyes wide open, knowing she was choosing him because he could give her the lifestyle she had grown up with, and that Vicente could not.
Wow, many thanks to Helen, doris, deb, and Vivi for your thanks and your great comments. Helen, I too was happy to see Stella get a dose of her own deceit. And although for a while I was rooting for Benji and his claim that he really had fallen for Angie, his texts to Margarita have cured me. A pox on them both! (BTW, Helen, if you really are retired in Florida, I hope that the expected hurricane doesn't cause you any problems.)
deb, I think you're right about Majo's fear of the powerful and unfamiliar feelings she can't control. But I do think that, at least for now, she remains a snob and can't imagine herself in Vicente's social class. How his going to university to study business administration will affect his class and her feelings remains to be seen.
doris, I'm so pleased that you like my including some translations. I'm still struggling to learn Spanish, and I always appreciate it when people include words and phrases that I didn't know or was unsure about. Hence, I try to do a little of that, especially when I come upon something that either I didn't know (such as no me pela, which apparently is used almost exclusively by Mexicans) or had questions about.
Vivi, I'm delighted that you found the recap useful. I do wonder whether Stella and Steve will wind up together because they do have a lot in common, or whether poor Poncho will get his heart's desire (Yuck!). And as you can probably tell from my comment to deb, I agree with you that for Majo, money and class are paramount for her own sense of who she is. Whether she'll be that way at the end of the novela remains to be seen. And dissected on CarayCaray. :-)
Thanks for the recaps and all the comments, ustedes!
I'm sure with telenovela beanie hat firmly on my head that Vicente, who expressed the thought of going to college & was then suddenly enrolled, will no doubt have a business degree by the end of the show. Heck, maybe even by the end of the month.
The people I have met that are from Spanish-speaking countries, from Mexico down to South America, have always been under the influence of the class system. This whole Majo/Andres/Vicente thing probably rings true for native Spanish-speakers, as it has for those I've known who wanted or dared to date outside of their class.
Thanks for the recaps this week, novelera and Juanita! I'm glad the mystery with Steve has been revealed already. Now let's hope they start with getting some couples together already. I hate when they leave everything until the very end.
I'm in southwest Florida house-sitting for the month, and as of right now, I'm between the tropical storm watch and warning areas so if Wednesday's or Friday's recaps are not up by around noon the next day, it's most likely because I have lost power. First time I come to Florida in 30 years and there's a hurricane! Fingers crossed that there's no major damage.
Thank you so much for this splendid recap, Juanita. Work has been intense today so I didn't get to read it until after 4:00 CA time. I loved all your asides. Yep, Viewerville's suspicions about Steve are borne out. I think someone here, can't credit them for their cleverness, did post that they thought Steve might not really be the owner of the big house, just someone who worked there.
I kind of hope Stella does end up with Steve. Poncho is just too goofy and unattractive, in my eyes at least, to match up with Stella. She IS pretty and shapely, after all.
I suppose that was a PSA that police can't search your house without a warrant; but, if I were Chivis, I would have let them search with a smile on my face. Her willingness to let them do so might have gotten some of the "heat" off her.
I think that Majo just has a mental block about ever marrying someone who wasn't well off. She just can't go there. It doesn't help that she has no concept of being an equal partner with her spouse; i.e., working a full-time job as well. If you put two middle-class incomes together you wouldn't be THAT poor.
Yes, Laura was pretty sarcastic about having to do without the big wedding with hundreds of guests she's dreamed about. Interesting that no one seems to mention that the family of the bride usually pays. Laura seemed to assume she'd pay for everything. Well, at least Andrés will have a nice bachelor pad when MJ finally breaks it off.
Thanks for mentioning no te pela. I've understood that one in context and it was interesting to learn it's one of the myriad mexicanismos we hear in telenovelas. You keep saying, Juanita, that you're learning Spanish. It appears to me you've already learned 90%!
I have Spanish literature class tonight, and my San Francisco Giants are playing for the National League baseball wild card. If I also watch Silvana, I'll have bags under my eyes tomorrow!
If anyone's interested, this quarter our Spanish class is reading Gringo Viejo by Carlos Fuentes. We read in turns aloud, several paragraphs or a page each person. Then that person summarizes what he or she just read, in their own words and in Spanish. Then our teacher, a native speaker, questions us about some of the finer linguistic points or idioms in what was just read. We go slowly and a novel often lasts us two or more quarters, but new vocabulary sinks in this way.
Muchísimas gracias, novelera. I wish I deserved your praise for my Spanish, but perhaps because I don't deserve it, I enjoy it all the more!
I too thought Chivis might have been wise to let the detectives search her house. Oh well, telenovela characters never listen to me. :-) And I too thought about the custom of the bride's family paying for a large chunk of the wedding. It was certainly true for my parents. Indeed, I only found out years later that they had to take out a loan to do so. I guess in this telenovela, it's obvious that Chivis is in no position to foot the bill, and Andrés' parents certainly are, so....
Well, I guess you went to bed happy last night, since the Giants won. Normally, I wouldn't know this, but the Sports section of today's Washington Post featured an article about the game with a big photo of Bumgarner and a sub-header that read "Bumgarner, Gillaspie propel Giants into NLDS, 3-0." Congrats.
I was very interested to read about the procedure you follow in your Spanish class. It's the same one a small group of us use when we meet. However, we meet only once a month (in each other's houses), so it takes us forever to get through a book. And, alas, we don't have someone who can question us about linguistic points or idioms. There's one native speaker in the group, and she occasionally does correct someone's pronunciation, but nothing more.
Steve tries to convince Stella to forgive him for lying. She slaps him hard, causing him to break a vase. Don Roberto comes downstairs and starts yelling at them. Stella reveals everything to him after he insults her again and marches out.
AJ demands that Rafael help hide him for a few more days so he can solucionar (resolve) a few things. He finally relents. He rents a depósito (warehouse) that he rarely uses so AJ can hide there.
Dom comes home with a dog that looks exactly like Francisco Javier. He begs Poncho to play along so that Stella won’t realize it’s not the same.
Jorge tells Margarita that he hasn’t been honest with her and that they can’t be together anymore. He wasn’t able to forget Angie and seeing her kiss Benji the night before killed him. Margarita kicks him out.
Dom advises Poncho to forget about Stella and find someone else. Poncho doesn’t want to. No one can replace Stella.
Angie jokes with Benji about how teachers shouldn’t go out with their students. He changes the subject to Jorge not working with them anymore. Angie asks him to not be mala onda (mean/on bad terms) with Jorge even though Jorge hasn’t exactly been buena onda (nice/easygoing) with him. He’s with Margarita and they are together, so why fight? Benji agrees. He receives a text from Margarita and makes up an excuse about his mother needing the car so he can leave.
Benji tells Margarita to forget Jorge since he obviously doesn’t care for her anymore. She won’t give up though. She threatens to tell Angie everything. Benji remains calm. He knows that if Margarita talks, she will lose Jorge forever, and she definitely doesn’t want that.
Stella arrives at Manuel’s crying and asking for forgiveness. She knows she messed things up and made a lot of mistakes. She wants them to have a second chance. Manuel seriously thinks she needs to see a mental health professional. Stella thinks they should go to couples’ therapy.
Manuel tells Stella he cares for her as a person, and as a friend, but he can’t help her. She thinks everything was her fault, for being so stupid. Stella actually thinks that Manuel will want her again after she figures things out. Me vas a recuperar. No te preocupes. (You’ll get me back. Don’t worry). Manuel is speechless at how delusional she is.
Just as delusional Poncho keeps pining over Stella. [FF -> more of the same in this scene] The new dog ate the sandwiches Dom made.
Cute family dinner at the Villaseñors, including Majo. Chivis is happy they are all together again. Lupita is excited and stressed about her first communion. Majo tells them she’s marrying Andrés, though she doesn’t appear to be overly excited about it. Angie remains seated while the others jump up to hug Majo. Chivis hopes that Majo is doing it out of love and not because she’s running from someone or something. Trini comments that it will help the family economically and Lupita notices that Angie didn’t congratulate Majo.
Rafael takes AJ to the warehouse. AJ claims to have everything under control; he just needs more money and everything can be resolved with money. He throws the keys to Rafael (to the car parked in front of Chivis’). Rafael knows the police are most likely all over it; which they are. They know AJ rented it under one of his aliases.
AJ reads Lupita’s latest letter with the date/time/place of her first communion. He conveniently finds some hats and a wig in the warehouse.
Dom cleans up the house that the new dog is making a mess of. Stella returns home and tells them about Steve’s lies. Dom and Poncho are annoyed that Stella talked to Manuel. Stella thinks that by returning to her normal self, Manuel will fall in love with her again. She’s going to return all the fresa things she bought since she’s in deep credit card debt. She goes upstairs to find Francisco Javier and discovers that he has chewed up everything in her room.
Lupita tells Angie the note she left for AJ is gone. Angie tells her it’s highly unlikely their dad will show up because he’s hiding from the police. Lupita knows that he probably won’t be there. Angie gives her a necklace that AJ had given her for her first communion.
AJ is terrible at disguises. He wears a really fake-looking beard, a hat, and glasses pretending to be a technician to enter into Rafael’s office. He wants Rafa to call Chivis, but his secretary tells him that two detectives are there to talk to him about AJ. He lets them in while AJ pretends to work on the modem. One of the cops notices AJ, but just asks him to leave since it’s a confidential meeting. The cops are ready to negotiate with AJ. Rafael claims he is not in contact with him, and that they should also leave Chivis alone since she is completely innocent.
Pedrito complains to Lupita that praying doesn’t work since he failed his math test. He doesn’t think he was doing it right. Lupita tells him he also has to study. The padre talks to them about what happens during the first communion. Pedrito has questions: first about la hostia (communion wafer) – does it taste like medicine? And do they get to taste wine? Not until they’re older. Lupita has her own question: Since wine represents the blood of Christ, what does whisky represent? Because Trini is religious and she drinks it. Trini hears this and comes down the stairs.
Rafael and AJ argue in the warehouse. Rafael admonishes him for making so many mistakes. AJ still protests that he didn’t steal anything; he only borrowed from people and he will return everything. He knows what he’s doing, and he knows he needs to stay away from his family for now. Rafa reminds him of the embargo and leaving his family with nothing. Las pobres no tienen donde caerse muertas (the poor women don’t have a penny to their name). AJ thinks that’s a good thing so no one will go after them. Rafael yells at him to take it seriously. Either he leaves the country the next day or he turns himself in.
Thank you, J. It's always a pleasure to read one of your recaps. You cover all the details and conversations I don't see or hear (like Stella's and Trini's). I DO like to read about them.
SpanProf--I thought the original little dog was a female but she wanted to name it Francisco Javier. At the time didn't make any sense to me, so maybe I heard it wrong. It would be funny, though if they got a different sex dog for the new one, but eating sandwiches, not housebroken and tearing up Stella's room is good enough for me.
I'm so tired of AJ's antics. He needs to go away. But we know that First communion is going to draw him to the church. He will need a better disguise.
NOTE TO ALL--SILVANA IS NOW BEING PLAGIARIZED ON AT LEAST ONE FACEBOOK PAGE. Thanks to Kat (5ft Latina) alerting me, I'm on it. I just got Novelera's Episode #3 (July 22) taken down. I despise this sort of copying--the word for word, whole recap, pass it off as their own work and get praised for it.
Thanks so much, J, for another terrific recap, complete with some helpful Spanish.
I couldn't believe that the police didn't recognize AJ in Rafael's office, or at least recognize that the guy looked very strange. But then again, even the people who worked for Rafael and knew AJ didn't recognize him.
So Stella is going to return all the fresa things she bought. Hmmm...I wonder whether that will include Francisco Javier. That, I think, was probably her most expensive purchase, and I doubt she'll get her money back. I suspect that the place where she bought the dog will recognize that it's not one of theirs. (Perhaps it's my TV, but FJ2 (the replacement dog) seemed to have blue/gray hair on top and light brown elsewhere. I don't recall FJ1 being similarly two-toned.) What else could she return? A washed and dried wig (perhaps still with a hint of fish smell?)?
I enjoyed Pedrito's uncertainty about how to pray--should he hold his hands this way or that way? What, he also has to study??
wonderful recap, as always, J!
did Steve say he knew lots of famous people,
but they didn't know him.
so Stella starts the fight for love with a a big slap,
hmm, mad at a guy for doing the same thing she is.
did Steve's boss say she sounded like a fishmonger?
so Stella is going back to being Stella, saved all the receipts and is going to return all the stuff (good luck with the dog) but wait,
didn't hijo 2.0 tear up all the stuff she was going to return.
Thanks so much for the fine recap, J. I needed it because I fell asleep for the last 10 minutes or so because I watched it AFTER having gone to Spanish class and then saw the rest of the Giants baseball game.
I couldn't help but enjoy Jorge's dumping Margarita. She's on Team Delusional along with Stella because she said something about getting him back at a later time. Benji was very forceful with her when he said Jorge would, of course, find out she'd been involved if she tried to tell Angie about his own involvement in the plot.
I'm pretty much over the Three Stooges scenes, not quite enough to fast forward them, but these people are just ridiculous.
I was too tired to really focus on what Steve's boss called Stella, but to me it sounded like "fishwife" translated into Spanish, deb. That's a common English insult for someone who's abrasive, loud and completely lacking in good manners; i.e., Stella.
I'm currently waiting in line and have some silly theories:
Steve also wears a wig and yet is irrationally scared of fake hair, that's why he went hysterical when Stella's wig came off
Poncho realizes he is actually in love with Dominique
Cata is used as a 'honey trap' by the FBI to catch AJ
Margarita ends up with Benji
Andres's father has something to do with AJ's cons
Both Andres and Vicente realize they can do better than MaJo
...................................... (yes, I'm bored!)
The first communion is definitely going to be important... they have mentioned it often since the very first episode.
