MIRADA
Ep 20: Part 1 Hope for Marina
*Beto and Marina finish off their evening with violin music, dancing and kisses. Meanwhile, Damiana prays that Ansty tell Pru and Don Louse the truth so that they can accept the love between Beto and Marina; if not, she will have to break her promise of secrecy.
*Doc Mask gets back to his house still in a fury. He throws some things around before he gets Marina’s registration form and tears it up saying that it’s not going to happen.
*Beto walks Marina back to her room. After they tell each other that they love each, they have a good night kiss and part ways…both on Cloud Nine (from which they will fall several times, I’m sure).
Next Day—
*At the ranch, everyone is at the table when Angsty comes to tell Don Louse that Lino wants to talk to him. Su and Vanesa both leave the table since they lost their appetite. Lino comes in asking if he can return to work, so Don Louse tells him to wait in his office. Before he goes, Don Louse asks Lino if he is friends with the blind one. When Lino confirms, Don Louse tells him to bring her to the house because he needs to talk to her. Angsty and Pru look at each other nervously.
*At the doctor’s office, Dr. Ricardo Bazán enters and introduces himself. When he sees Marina, it is obvious that he is quite smitten with her. After Damiana introduces herself, he obliges then introduces himself to Marina…and continues to stare.
*At the ranch, Lino tries to make excuses, so Don Louse brushes him off and tells him to go to his office. Pru comments that no one wants to tell him anything because they fear he will harm Marina. Don Louse assures her that he just wants to help her…as long as she stays away from Beto. After Angsty gives her two cents worth, Don Louse calls Marina a social climber and leaves. Angsty adds that Marina may be poor and blind, but she is no social climber. Pru thinks that Angsty should be siding with Vanesa since she will soon be her daughter.
*At Doc Mask’s office, Ramona sees all the tom papers and recognizes that those are needed so that Marina can submit her exams. Doc responds that she deserved it and tells Ramona to leave.
*At the ranch office, Lino talks about his project, but Don Louse cuts him off and tells him the project is fine. Lino can go ahead with it, but just as Don Louse is giving Lino something, he wants something is return—Marina. If Lino can’t bring her to him, then Don Louse will find someone else to continue with Lino’s project.
*At Dr. Bazán’s office, Damiana gives some background info on Marina. She found out she couldn’t see when she would bump into things. Damiana also tells him about her birth and how Marina took a while to breath after birth. Dr. Bazán thinks the lack of oxygen may have contributed to the blindness, and he will have to run some more tests to identify where the problem truly lies. If the problem is in an area that can be repaired, then Marina might get her sight. After Damiana and Marina exit, Dr, Bazán reminds Beto that they went to school together in Vancouver. After Beto somewhat recognizes him, Beto asks when he can run the tests. Dr. B replies that he has a conference to go to, but he will try to set up the exams as soon as he can.
*At the ranch, Margarito chides Lino for going to ask to return to work. Margarito thinks Damiana might have to move elsewhere since he can’t keep putting Louse off much longer. When he mentions that he is going to go talk to Damiana, Lino and Yola feel compelled to tell him that Damiana and Marina went off to the city with Beto.
*Doc Mask is making calls everywhere trying to find out where Beto is staying in the city.

*Hortencia and Angsty are talking in the kitchen when Su comes in blaming Marina, the sly fox, for everything. When Angsty speaks up for Marina, Su reminds her that she is just part of the help and shouldn’t be meddling.
*Marina tells Beto that she thought she had no chance of ever seeing; that is what Doc Mask had told her…he never took her to a specialist because it was too expensive. When Beto tells them that they are returning home, Marina remember s that she forgot to ask the Doctor about Tori’s case to see if he could help him.
*Damiana and Marina arrive home. Tori arrives and tells them how Doc Mask got angry because they went to the city. When Tori tells them that he was very scared, Marina thinks it is her fault because she didn’t let the Doc know she was leaving. Marina will go talk to him; she thinks he will be glad to hear that there is hope for her (Yeah, right!).
*Zackrat sucks up to Don Louse. He still can’t find Marina’s house, but he won’t rest until he finds her.
*Beto goes see Doc Mask. While Ramona goes to call him, Beto looks through some files and finds Marina’s record. When Doc Mask enters, Beto reproaches him because he knew that Marina reacted to light. Beto demands to know why Doc kept the info from Marina and now knows that Doc wanted her to stay blind. When Doc shouts as he confirms it, Beto punches him sending him to the floor. He then tells Doc Mask that he found a doctor that found that Marina might be able to see. They continue to argue until things get really heated and they fight until Beto punches Doc down to the floor again (Squuueee! Kick him!) and tells him that Marina is no longer alone; she has him to protect her.
*Marina and Damiana give Tori his surprise—candy!
*Lino sings his usual song as Vanesa listens in her room. As she goes to the window, Su comes in to tell her that Beto is on his way home and she’d better get with it. Vanesa is frustrated that Su continues with her seduction plan, but Su insists and tells Vanesa to take a bath and get ready for Beto.
*Yola and Margarito talk more about Marina. Margarito knows that Damiana and Marina are safe as long as they are with Beto, but he still thinks they will have to move elsewhere.
*Ramona questions Doc Mask as to why he didn’t want to give Beto Marina’s file, Doc Mask grabs her arm hard making Ramona grimace until she gets away from him and runs off (Why does she stay there?!).
*Beto arrives and talks to Pru who mentions that she knows why he went to the city Beto tells her that Marina might be able to see. Pru thinks it was nice of him, but he should be more considerate of Vanesa since their wedding announcement went out. When she asks him to stay away from Marina, Beto tells her he won’t. No one can order him what to feel.
*Su is making sure that Vanesa looks sexy when Beto walks in; so Su leaves them alone. Vanesa puts on her act, but Beto is not swayed. He tells her that he doesn’t want to hurt her, but it can’t be avoided. He then tells her that he can’t kiss her the way he used to and what he felt for her before doesn’t exist any more.
*Beto goes to talk to Angsty and tells her that there is hope that Marina might be able to see.
*Su goes back to Vanesa’s room and chides her for not being more assertive in seducing Beto; she should know what excites Beto, but she isn’t even good at that. Just then Yola arrives with some fruit for Vanesa so Su leaves. After Yola tells Vanesa that Lino is suffering because of her, Vanesa responds that it’s best that they stay away from each other...even Yola said that a city girl wouldn’t be able to get along with a country boy. Yola is sorry she said that, but Vanesa insists and asks her to tell Lino to try to forget her.

After Angsty tells him that she knows about him and Vanesa, he reminds her that Vanesa is getting married to Beto. Angsty assures him that Vanesa loves him and advises him not to give up. Lino then asks her to tell Vanesa that he will wait for her in the equipment room.
*Zackrat reports to Don Louse. He saw Beto go visit Doc Mask and he stayed there for a while. Don Louse asks Zackrat to get more info on Doc Mask.
*Angsty goes to give Vanesa Lino’s message. Vanesa doesn’t want to go, but Angsty insists that she should at least go talk to him. When Vanesa reiterates that she is going to get Beto back and marry him, Angsty emphasizes that they don’t love each other and they will never be happy.
*Don Louse tells Su that he thinks Beto is meeting Marina at Doc’s office (Boy, is he way off the target!). Don Louse then tells her about Doc Mask and how he got burned saving Marina’s life. Su thinks that Doc Mask is working with the mother to help Marina snag Beto (another big miss!). Don Louse doesn’t know; what he does know is that the relationship has to end.
*Beto talks to Eric and brings him up to date about Marina. When Eric mentions that the wedding announcement continues to be publicized, Beto shares that he has already told Vanesa that he doesn’t love her and that there is no reason to continue their relationship. He hopes that Vanesa will throw him to the curb.
*Marina tells Baldo about her trip and her hopes of getting her sight. She then mentions that she and Beto were made for each other since they were born on the same day. Beto recalls talking to Damiana when she decided to keep the baby and wondering where Marina got her beautiful eyes. Marina then mentions her earrings and that Damiana named her after the earrings that have a mysterious past and will decide her destiny. As Tori approaches, Marina tells them that she is on her way to see Doc Mask, but Tori warns her to be careful since the Doc hurt him when he questioned him about Marina going to the city. Baldo decides to accompany Marina to see the Doc.
*As Vanesa walks toward the equipment room, Zackrat sees her and wonders what she is up to. When Vanesa enters the equipment room, Lino slowly goes to her and they hug. He was afraid she wouldn’t show up and she is very afraid…but she can’t help herself…yet she can help herself to his lips quite well!

Usually,when a telenovela has really nice scenes like the romantic dinner, they are followed with something awful soon after. I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop. Clearly I’ve watched too many telenovelas.

Yep, it's going to be a very bumpy ride. Lots of scoundrels conspiring to keep Beto and Marina booted off that lovely cloud. Good thing we know these always have a happy ending.

Hey all: I don't watch this one, but do find it on occasionally when I can watch with one eye and ear.
Marina is so much nicer here and in Ramon, compared to Amar a Muerte, she is just adorable with a disability. If she could lop off an arm or a leg she might maybe be my next exwife.
Santamarina sure does the 'Large and In Charge' thing well. Reminds me of lots of my Buddies.
Old Doctor Halfface sure is moody. He better be careful or Alberto will mess up the good side next time.
Vanessa and Sue: Oh Boy, Man Trap Inc. Most of this show we have only seen Vanessa in bed, that reinforces my suspicion that that is where she does her best work. All along she has sported he J C Penny PJs, until a target is on the radar. With Alberto on the way over Sue sets her up in her 'Barely There Under Wear' displayed like a luscious little fruit ripe for the picking. Mind you, this fruit can be picked over and over...... actually it will assist you in the picking effort.......A LOT..
But Alberto escapes.

Kirby, nice to see the eagles again :) Amazing how Claudia Martín can play completely opposite personas. Kudos to the actress for a job well done. "Vanessa and Sue: Oh Boy, Man Trap Inc." Most definitely! Can you imagine what Vanessa could do if she re-e-eally wanted to snare Alberto? And he didn't even seem to notice what she was wearing...WILL POWER!!

Who is going to break the safety circle around Marina first--Doc Mask, who is really angry at Beto and Marina; Zackrat who wants Margarito's job; Margarito, who wants to keep his job; Lino who wants to run his project; Beto, who thinks Papa Louse will welcome Marina (at some point); Su, who wants Marina and Beto separated so she can continue to promote a loveless marriage for a wealthy life-style; Tori, who has a temperamental brain and we all suffer when he gets things mixed up; Angtsy and Pru for their own reasons. It will never be Baldo or Damiana unless they are tortured for the information and even then, they may hold out.

Ep 21: Part 1 The Slapfest
*At the ranch kitchen, Susana asks Angsty if she has seen Vanesa. Angsty thinks that if she went out, she probably needs some alone time, but Su prefers that her daughter focus on keeping Beto in line instead of being beat out by a blind person. When Angsty suggests that Su get to know Marina so she can see how admirable she is, Su scoffs and thinks Marina is disabled and a little inferior thing….she is trash. Angsty retorts that Marina means a lot to Beto who adores her. When Su mentions that Vanessa is distraught, Angsty suggests that Vanesa may not be distraught because of what Su thinks. This sets off Su and they get into a shouting match until Pru comes in and breaks up the argument.

Angsty retorts that Marina means a lot to Beto who adores her. When Su mentions that Vanessa is distraught, Angsty suggests that Vanesa may not be distraught because of what Su thinks. This sets off Su and they get into a shouting match until Pru comes in and breaks up the argument.

He even tried to forbid Marina from seeing Beto, but she didn’t listen. Beto took her to the city to have her eyes checked; Beto is trying to help Marina get her sight so Don Louse will accept her as his woman. Doc Mask twists the knife by telling Don Louse that Marina and Beto have been making a fool of him and also of Beto’s fiancée. If Don Louse doesn’t do anything about it, then Doc will...he will file charges against Beto for entering his office and going through his records. When Don Louse forbids him from doing that, Doc retorts that Don Louse can’t tell him what to do or not do. He stresses that if Don Louse doesn’t do something, he will respond with the same violence that Beto showed when he attacked him. Doc Mask thinks that Beto considers him his rival, but Doc will not permit Beto to take his woman. Don Louse points out that they want the same thing. When he mentions that he has been trying to find out where Marina lives, Doc tells him he will help him with that.
*Damiana explains that Angsty was the one who came up with the idea of switching the babies. Baldo now understands why Pru was crying at the grave. Baldo wonders why Damiana doesn’t tell the truth…so Damiana tells him about her promise to the archangels. The only thing she cares about is that her daughter be happy and that she return to the house where she belongs…either as a daughter or Beto’s wife.
*Marina is at the cemetery talking to her supposed parents and thanking them for putting Beto in her path. He is her happiness and is like a light within her. She wishes she could shout her feelings to the world.
*Damiana asks Baldo not to tell Marina anything; so he agrees. Damiana knows he is a good man, but she cannot return his love. Baldo knows she can’t because she continues to adore a memory.
*Pru pleads with Beto to forget Marina and adds that Vanesa is suffering . When she adds that everyone would be happy if he did that, Beto points out that he and Marina would not be happy. She can just imagine what the family would say…and Beto would have the perfect excuse for running to his blind girl.

When Lino tries to get up to go see Vanesa, Yola sits him down and tells him he will only make things worse…he shouldn’t have fallen in love with her.
*Zackrat goes to talk to Don Louse who already found out where Marina lives…on his land. He puts Zackrat in charge of throwing them out…and he can use force and needs to go alone. When he tells Zackrat exactly where they live, Zackrat suggests that someone had to give them permission to live there…Margarito…he had to have known all along. Zackrat thinks that Don Louse shouldn’t trust Margarito.
*Su goes to cry to Prut ah Vanesa is crying her eyes out. Pru tells her that Beto ended things with her, Su worries about what people will say. Don Louse then comes in and asks for his son. When he mentions that Beto took Marina to the city, Pru admits that she and Angsty knew. Don Louse then tell s them that it was Doc Mask who told him…and he thinks the Doc is “using” the blind girl.

I’m just watching this afternoon’s episode. I just got to the scene between Don Louse and Doc Mask. “Scarface” just spilled the beans to “Al Capone.”
Oooh-eeeeh, the air around Vane and Lino sure was still hot. We all knew Su was going to interrupt. In true tn fashion, Lino couldn’t prevent Su from carrying Vane off. I haven’t seen a scene with a mother physically attacking her daughter like that in a long time (or don’t remind me, I don’t want to have to think about it).

Very nice recap of some very not nice behavior. I had been lusting after Su a little, but it's over between us now. The woman is nasty. She, Don Louse, Doc Mask, and Zackrat together could make almost anyone doubt the wisdom of trying to save the human race.
Vanesa, on the other hand, has regained my admiration. I think she would be just great in a steamy shampoo commercial, she has such gorgeous hair. And the rest of her seems not too shabby either.
And the poor little blind girl managed to not fall down a well or anything like that. So... a good day in the valley.

Ay, Doris, you seem to not know much about TN doctors. They generally only see about three or four patients a month, often poor patients. Nonetheless they tend to make quite a lot of money. But they are bored so they spend a lot of time wining and dining beautiful young women, investigating paranormal phenomena, investigating cold crime cases, doing medical missionary work, and working part-time at fashion houses.
They, along with a few corporate CEO's and the landed gentry with haciendas, are the only people in Mexico who do not live in awful fear of losing their jobs and having to pack up all their belongings in an old suitcase to leave town on the 3rd class bus.
Being a TN doc is nice work if you can get it.

What I like about this one is that the Rich Begins with a B, who is the putative rival of the protagonist, is NOT such a bad person. And, you're so right about the shampoo commercial, Andy. Amazing hair!

*Still at the church, Marina tells Angsty she is a beautiful person. After they leave, they meet up with Beto who insists on escorting Marina to Margarito’s house…it’s time they stop hiding from his father who needs to accept that Beto wants to spend the rest of his life with Marina.
*At the ranch, Pru is consoling Vanesa and assuring her that Beto will come to his senses and ask her for her forgiveness. Vanesa tries to tell Pru the truth, but Su shows up and intervenes and starts in on Vanesa. When Pru tells her not to be so harsh on Vanesa, Su insists that Vanesa will do as told.
*Zackrat shows up at Damiana’s house and tells her he is there following Don Louse’s orders to throw them out of the house. After he tells Damiana that it is Marina that Don Louse wants out and that he didn’t tell Don Louse that Damiana is Marina’s mother, Zackrat wants Damiana to show him some appreciation and forces himself on her, but Damiana fights back and tells him they will leave by the next day. Zackrat ends up pushing Damiana to the floor where she hits her head and passes out.
*Marina tells Yola that Beto doesn’t want them to hide anymore and that Beto ended it with Vanesa. Yola tells Marina about Margarito planning to tell Don Louse where she lives and that they will need to move. She assures Marina that her father will help them find somewhere to live. Margarito approaches and apologizes to Marina for what he is going to have to do. Marina then rushes home to help her mother pack what little things they have.
*When Beto and Angsty enter the house, Pru tell him that his father knows everything; so Beto goes to see his father. When he enters the office, Beto tells Don Louse that he is going to marry Marina. When Don Louse shouts that he isn’t going to allow Beto to ruin his life or have his grandchildren be born blind, Beto argues; so Don Louse tells him that if he is going to insist, he will have to leave the house.
*Margarito sees Yola crying in her bed. He thinks it’s because she is worried about Marina, but Yola confesses that she is also worried about Lino. As she is about to tell him about Lino and Vanesa, Lino shows up and admits to his father that he is in love…with Vanesa. Margarito chides Lino for setting his eyes on someone he shouldn’t, especially Beto’s fiancée. Lino insists that Vanesa loves him and he doesn’t care who opposes them. Margarito reminds Lino that he has been loyal to Don Louse for many years and that thanks to him, they have a house to live in and secure jobs.

He doesn’t know if the woman is alive, but he did tell her that it was Don Louse who sent him. Zackrat then admits that the woman is Damiana and that he didn’t mean to hurt her, but she came at with him with a knife. Don Louse suggests that they wait; they will surely find out if the news is bad.
*Pru goes to Beto and pleads with him to stay…and to forget Marina. Beto refuses to submit to his father’s demands. When Beto insists that he is leaving the house, Pru feels faint. Outside, Tori arrives and has the misfortune of being seen by Zackrat who tells him that Beto is busy. Meanwhile, Beto is attending to his mother whose blood pressure and sugar levels are low. When she comes to, she asks Beto to stay, but he tells her that it’s not up for discussion.
*Su goes to give Vanesa the scoop about Beto leaving the house. Vanesa points out that Beto ended it with her and there is nothing more they can do. Su responds that sehis not going to give up; she has a plan. Beto must not leave or lose his inheritance.
*Doc Mask arrives at Damiana’s house. After he checks Damiana, he tells Marina that she is still breathing.
*Zackrat goes to tell Don Louse that Tori was looking for Beto. Tori wanted Beto to go see Damiana who was still passed out. Don Louse warns Zackrat that if Damiana talks, Zackrat will have to leave the ranch.
*Tori gets back to Damiana’s house and tells Marina that he couldn’t get to Beto. After Marina thanks him, Doc Mask tells them that he will take care of everything. Marina cries as she tells Doc that she went looking for him to explain why she left and to offer her apologies, but Doc tells her that can wait; making sure Damiana recovers is what is important.
*Don Louse is by himself remembering “the incident”…he recalls running down the hill and going to Tori who is on the ground passed out. Louse tells Tori that it wasn’t him who took the shot…it was the devil! Louse then runs off. Don Louse thinks that luck smiles upon him. Tori’s head injury left him mentally incapacitated and he doesn’t remember anything. He hopes Damiana forgives him, but no one can connect him to her. Su then comes in and tells Don Louse that Beto is tending to Pru. When she suggests that he not be harsh on Beto (she should take her own advice!) because he just made a mistake, Don Louse retorts that the Ocaranzas don’t make mistakes.
*Lino is on his way to go see Vanesa when Yola stops him and takes him back to the house. She tells him that he should wait until Vanesa comes looking for him.
*Su suggests that Don Louse accept the blind one for now. If he doesn’t Beto will go off and marry Marina who will inevitably become part of his family. Su thinks that Beto will get tired of Marina since she doesn’t even know how to use a fork. Don Louse fears that if he accepts the relationship, it will be a great humiliation for him.

After he leaves, Marina confides in Tori that they will be going to stay with Doc, but Tori vehemently urges her not go with Doc because he is bad.

There are quite a few very nasty people in this TN, but there are also some very nice peeps. Angustias for example. She seems muy nice, and has a beautiful smile. But she should go ahead and tell Pru the truth, it would help solve some big problems. Oh, telenovela, right, too soon.
It occurred to me that she doesn't have a boyfriend (as far as I know) and it would be good for her to find somebody. Then I thought some more and decided that she seems happy with things as they are, so better to leave well enough alone. There is nothing more certain to mess up your life than becoming romantically involved with someone.
In TNs, I mean. :-)
Yola cares about her brother and is always looking out for him. Pru seems to have made her pact with the Devil and is trying to keep him under control when she can, which is not often.
Vanesa has turned out to be nice, though weak. Not her fault perhaps but...
Well, I can't see her living on the ranch with Lino and picking avocados, taking care of the horses, and doing housework. She and Yola would fight over how to arrange things anyway. Do they shoot many shampoo commercials down in Valle de whatever?

That final convo scene between Su and Louse looked like a premonition....when she placed her hand on top of his ... and he looked down at it ....shenanigans might ensue in a future episode. I wouldn't put it past Su to steal Pru's husband to ensure her own economic survival in case Vane falls thru for her.

JudyB, that scene where Marina found Damiana was definitely nerve wracking. While I'm glad that a "doctor" arrived to help, I hate that it was Scarface. Now I'm wondering if he will use that to his convenience and hold it over Damiana since "he saved her life." Maybe he'll claim her as his woman too. Creep!

Doris, "That final convo scene between Su and Louse looked like a premonition....when she placed her hand on top of his ... and he looked down at it ....shenanigans might ensue in a future episode." thanks for bringing that up, I had the same thought (Ewww, but they deserve each other).
JudyB, that scene where Marina found Damiana was definitely nerve wracking. While I'm glad that a "doctor" arrived to help, I hate that it was Scarface. Now I'm wondering if he will use that to his convenience and hold it over Damiana since "he saved her life." Maybe he'll claim her as his woman too. Creep!
Thank you RGV Cluck Cluck, Meow, Baaa (or whatever goats say). I was sure Damiana was not dead. That would have left Marina completely in Doc Mask's clutches with Beto looking in from the outside. Right now they have no other choice than to move in with Scarface.
Su has no right to be called Mother. It parallels a US soap I'm watching where the Mother has hurt her daughter psychologically in order to achieve her career ambitions and money. Same as Su.
I had a different interpretation of Don Louse's flashback. First, recall the conversation that Baldo had with Damiana. She said she couldn't respond to him the way he wanted. There was only one man in her life--or sth like that. She didn't mention anything else, but I took note.
Next, the guy who was jumping all over the place saying it wasn't he, it was the Devil who shot the guy on the ground, HAD to be Tori. He ran off, still jumping, legs all askew.
The guy who was shot, I'm going to guess was Damiana's lover, intended, whatever, because, when we go back to Don Louse, whom we don't see in the flashback, he says he hopes Damiana can forgive, or get along without him--or sth like that. (I could be wrong but can't go back and check because I deleted the episode.) Don Louse is relieved that Tori went bad in the head and could never recall what had really happened. I think Don Louse shot Dam's boyfriend. Either way, it explains why Tori is mortally afraid of gunshots.
Bingo status: I'm sure I heard Don Louse (or was it Doc Mask) say "Sueltame." My Card 1 has "Discovery of Real Parentage," so that one is a sure thing....maybe in episode 50. On Card 11, I just crossed out "Character Sings," and sings and sings. I was sure we'd get "Faked Pregnancy," but Vane wouldn't go along with Su. One of my squares is "Thrown Food." I wonder why Julie didn't include "Thrown Cell Phone" in there somewhere in memory of Sergio Sendel in MEPS.

Hmmm...interesting theory Anita. I even thought maybe Don Louse had a thing for Damiana. He was seriously upset when he found out she was Marina's mother. Well, whatever, clearly he deals with his guilt over bad behavior by attributing it to the Devil. Now, is he schizo? Borderline? He sure has some surprising reactions at times. Glad at least he values the partera who brought his "son" into the world. For whatever reason.
