Primetime on Univisión (#1): Ringo - Week of Dec. 30, 2019 – Jan. 3, 2020
It's the eye of the tiger (Survivor)
It's the eye of the tiger
It's the thrill of the fight
Risin' up to the challenge
Of our rival
The best way to keep one's word is not to give it (Napoleon Bonaparte) Part 1
A father desperate to reassure his son of his love and his fierce devotion makes a promise. To regain custody - to never be forcefully separated again. To strengthen their unbreakable bond, forged in faith. A promise of redemption in the ring. To build a life for their family of two based on love and implicit trust. To be with each other always. Salvation for their hearts and souls. But the way is paved with trials and misfortunes, born of the selfishness and desire for revenge of others. Ringo and Turco’s fight symbolizes but one tribulation. Who will be victorious and who will be vanquished?
We begin with the fight in progress, Rosa ringside with a huge “Ringo” emblazoned on her blue T shirt. She sees Antúnez who greets her and mispronounces her name. Ahh, La Zorra is also there, and none too friendly. Antúnez asks for a photo op with his two female fighters. Looks like Rosa and La Zorra won’t be braiding each other’s hair in the near future so they take their leave, Rosa casting dark looks at her soon to be opponent. Julia arrives and purposely avoids Diego and Ivan. Julia smiles in Ringo’s direction. Ringo is shaking himself out and Turco is rinsing and spitting. Oso is pumping him up as Ringo looks determined. Uh ho, Diego sees Rosa and hears her whistling. A chant for “Ringo” arises and roars. Ringo is getting some good hits in. Round 3. Oso and Santi cheer Ringo from the sidelines. Ringo sees Julia and smiles. Round 5. Looks like Ringo is doing well as Diego look grim. Round 8, 9 and 10. Brenda and Alejo watch as Brenda’s interest wanes. Ringo’s friends watch, cheering. Ringo gets Turco against the ropes, looks like Turco is hurting. Punches are relentless. Ringo has him in a head lock.
Next it appears Ringo‘s hand is hurting, although he says he is OK. The person who is clearly in the most torment is Teresa, wringing her hands and praying throughout the entire fight. Turco goes on the attack backing Ringo into the ropes as Ringo tries to defend himself. Gloria cheers.

The best way to keep one's word is not to give it (Napoleon Bonaparte) Part 2
Max gets Eva a treat from the cafeteria and they end up watching the fight together. Turco and Ringo both look exhausted. Teresa is in tears. Ringo flanked by Oso, Rafa and Guachin gets up with dogged determination. Turco bobs and weaves, sticking his cheek out urging Ringo to hit him, quickly unleashing a torrent of punches. Diego stands up urging Turco on. Julia’s, Rosa’s and Santi’s faces reflect their grave concern and worry. Santi screams. Alejo and Brenda argue as she turns the TV off and he turns it back on. Regaining his senses (at least momentarily), Alejo stands up and leaves. Any fighting spirit Ringo had seems to dissipate. Eva is screaming and Ringo’s friends are silent. Turco goes after Ringo who collapses.
The count is started as Ringo recalls training with Oso in the ring. He sees Santi with “Ringo” on his shirt and starts to grab the ropes as he pulls himself up. Julia nods encouragingly as Rosa hugs her. Well, Ringo can barely stand as Teresa stares unbelievingly. Dear God she cries. Turco comes in like a raging bull and starts punching Ringo on his side, every painful swing hits its mark. Oso takes Ringo to the corner. As we are wondering why the referee doesn’t stop the fight, Oso tries to rally Ringo, telling him to do it for Santi, his son, the most important thing as Rafa looks on approvingly. Julia pleads with him to stop. Ivan sees her as Diego steams. And finally, Alejo shows up pumping his fist in solidarity with Ringo!
Turco hits Ringo in the face. Turco keeps up his assault yet the ref lets the fight continue. Gloria holds Santi. Suddenly the tables turn. It’s a miracle as Ringo comes to life, hitting Turco like a punching bag. Turco goes down as Ringo’s friends cheer and Turco’s corner tries to rally him. Eva and Max cheer. Turco gets the count. Diego and Antúnez exchange looks. I gather the ref is crooked and “in their pocket”. Turco is not getting up. The count is excruciatingly delayed, leaving no doubt the fight is fixed. Oso goes after the ref….Ref gets the fighters together and Turco is declared the winner. Santi hugs Ringo and Julia is crying.
Ringo arrives back “home” and is greeted warmly by his friends. Teresa tells Ringo she loves him, is he OK. He hugs her.
Ivan chastises Julia. Diego dances in like a fool followed by a huge crowd including Antúnez and Turco. Gloria is all smiles. Santi is not. Julia hugs Santi. Turco bears the marks of his beating.
Ringo cries, leaning against the shower wall as he recalls Santi cheering him on, Julia’s smile, Oso’s encouragement. The water sprays over him as he is lost in thought and remembrances. Oso is not taking the loss well, bellowing inconsolably amidst his tears. Santi and Guachin leave as Oso cries as though his heart is broken. Manuel arrives to comfort Ringo. Manuel reinforces what an excellent boxer Ringo is. Ringo runs into Santi’s arms and smiles ensue. Julia. Santi leaves as Julia examines his hand. Thank you for taking care of Santi. Julia tells him he is the champion to Santi. To her. To everyone.
Diana
Thanks, Diana, for your faithful and fine retelling of this fight-centered episode. “Eye of the Tiger” lyrics here were so appropriate. Made me think of the “Rocky” movies I so enjoyed.
I have to give them credit for spending as much time on the fight as they did and making it look as brutal as boxing is. They are going to have a fight where Ringo regains his title, right? Sure hope so. .
As for Julia and the rest of it with Ringo and Diego, etc., etc., etc.., was just plain old tedious.
Looking forward to some plot movement tomorrow.
Thanks Jarifa!
As the fight was 99% of the episode, it was a bit challenging (not as challenging as when I only understand 15% of the dialogue) but trying to create a summary when the fists were doing all the taking was hard :)
Your "and making it look as brutal as boxing is" said everything! The fight really looked realistic, didn't it? And it reminded me of Rocky's first fight where he gave it everything he had but couldn't quite beat Apollo Creed.
I was happy Alejo came around and hope he gets rid of Brenda. Quickly.
Diana
Watching this fight I could not help but wonder if it was choreographed by the same people who brought us the 'Hooka Luuurve in da Lockdown' a couple of nights ago in Lizard (El Dragon). I did think I recognized on of the ring girls from Conjugal Tent Heaven the other night.
Ring girl: The ones who walk out into the ring between rounds holding a sign with the upcoming round number. The sign is customarily an order of magnitude larger than the clothing worn for this task.
Julie was a sweetheart with Santi when she removed him from the Turdo victory celebration. He is too young to be exposed to victory hookers already. (Overlook Edna / Gloria)
I surfed in and out of this episode because I really can't stand watching people bash each other . Will sadeyed Ringo be a punching bag throughout this entire show until the finale ? UFF. And meh. P.s. My tablet always autocorrects Ringo to dingo.
Kirby, the "parade of girls " scene was so odd. I am glad that Julie whisked Santi away from the debauchery.
Bravo, Diana! Terrific recapping and sports writing. I missed the first half of the episode, but I can see it and everybody's reactions to the fight. My faves:
Looks like Rosa and La Zorra won't be braiding each other's hair...
The person who is clearly in the most torment is Teresa...
Diego dances in like a fool
It'll be interesting to see if the sports press points out that Ringo got robbed and there's no way Turco should've been judged the winner. Not sure about Ringo and Oso's next move. How can they be sure the next bout will be legit? And how can Oso deal with Rosa taking a fall now and dealing with Atunez? Inquiring minds want to know.
This all drew Julia closer to Ringo, so I guess we'll hear Diego kvetching "Ringo, Ringo, Ringo!" to Julia some more.
Despite the challenge of "covering the fight," you came through with flying colors...your interpretation was spot on and I could visualize the fight as it really happened.
Jarifa, I figured they would spend some time on the fight, but for it to last practically the entire episode was a surprise to me.
The loyalty and support from Ringo's friends was very touching , I especially liked with Manuel told Ringo, "They can take the fight from you, but they can't take you courage or determination."
I can understand Ringo being upset about losing the fight, but to call himself a loser was a little too much since he knew the fight was fixed and he did go in with a "handicap." BUT...it's just a story.
Kirby, it was very sweet and smart that Julie took Santi from the party and then sneaked him over to see Ringo, but this girl is just asking for trouble. She may as well just ask Diego for a divorce; why beat around the bush?
You hit it out of the park again lady. Loved the shoutout to Eye of the Tiger, Bonaparte quote title, the beautifully sensitive prologue (this IS a Love Story but it's not a man-woman love story, it's a father-son love story...Ringo, Santi and Oso, Rafa) and of course those observations throughout:
"Looks like Rosa and la Zorra won't be braiding each other's hair in the near future." cracked me up.
And your remark about Ringo's mom was perfect. I was very impressed by the actress' portrayal last night--very nuanced and effective. She's great whatever role she plays.
Did anybody else recognize "the Hurricane" from la Reina Soy Yo at the party? She was certainly looking quite fetching in her gold lamé postage stamp dress.
Silly me, I thought somehow Ringo was going to win this fight no matter what. Looks like we'll be on tenterhooks till the end with his money problems and custody issues. Oh well...
Great recap amiga mia. Amazing.
"Julie was a sweetheart with Santi when she removed him from the Turdo victory celebration". She was Kirby and of course I laughed at "Turdo". I haven't seen Dragon at all but very interesting that it could be the same choreographers. Santi's seen far more than he should but he seems very unassuming and a really good kid.
Susanlynn, I got through the fighting by telling myself this is only a show. I thought the actors did an incredible job, especially Jose. I did wonder though if there was a stand in for Turco as it didn't look like him from behind in a few of the scenes.
Thank you Niecie! I'm hoping Oso realizes the fix was in. Not sure if the press will say anything? Seems no one seems to admit guilt nowadays, even when caught red handed. But in reality, Oso isn't being honest either as he agreed to have Rosa throw the fight. And now, for what end?? No spoiler, but if the Rosa/Zorra fight happens, I don't see her going down.
I appreciate your kind and generous words Rgv Chick. "I especially liked with Manuel told Ringo, "They can take the fight from you, but they can't take you courage or determination." Thank you for adding that crucial information. Julia is stretching everyone's patience, Diego's and ours :) There was no mistaking your being at the fight Julia. Ivan knows it. Diego knows it. We know it. Time to see a lawyer.
Thank you Judy! Your eloquent "this IS a Love Story but it's not a man-woman love story, it's a father-son love story...Ringo, Santi and Oso, Rafa" captured the heart of this perfectly. And thank you so much for confirming "The Hurricane" was there! I thought it was her but not sure enough to note it. What an eye you have!
This patio is just the best. So glad and grateful you all took time out from a busy New Years Eve to comment. Thank you.
Diana
Kirby, “victory hookers” said it all. With them in tow, the “celebration” should have been held in a in a cheap hotel/motel somewhere and not in a private home with female family members in attendance. Tacky! . . . so many of these characters are.
Diana, Ringo’s performance made me think of Muhammad Ali and the old “rope-a-dope”.
I hope 2020 brings happiness and good health to all on our little community.
Diana
Well, whatever your traditions are, I hope you all have good luck in every way in 2020.
In my Familia, we make buñuelos and champurado. We also sweep and mop on New Year’s Eve to start the year with a clean “slate” teehee, but I manage to get it dirty throughout the year. LOL
Bloody But Unbowed Part 1(William Earnest Henley)
What defines us is not when we are at our best, but when we are at our worst. Some lives spiral downward, fast and furious. For others, the progression is slower. A series of losses, each claiming a piece of the heart, of the soul. How far can one fall? Rock bottom is but a measure of despair. Some soldier on after many would have given up and succumbed. What saves them is sheer will, determination and grit. And a precious few who love and support, who comfort, uplift and strengthen resolve. The path to vindication is long, arduous and rife with setbacks. Yet, despite seemingly insurmountable odds, against great adversity, redemption is possible.
Ringo is in anguish but Julia tells him how important he is to her, to Santi. Julia tells Ringo that, to everyone, he is the champion...and he needs to ask for a rematch. Ringo would rather continue with dance classes as he stands her up and turns her around under his arm as they both smile. He caresses her cheek with his hand and for a moment, it appears they will kiss but Julia pulls away stating they must get going. In the interim, Gloria is looking for Santi.
Oso thinks he failed and tells Rosa she should look for another trainer. She refuses telling him he IS the best. Oso argues that Ringo gave it his all and he still couldn’t win. Rosa cries as she tells Oso that she needs him and asks if he understands what she is saying. Rosa cannot contain what she feels any longer.
He returns the sentiment and a romantic kiss is ruined as Santi bursts in, grinning ear to ear, who sing songs that they are novios. Is no one going to be allowed to kiss in this episode?? Julia and Ringo catch the tail end of this and of course Rosa denies but Julia’s eyes are dancing.
Diego and Gloria feed off each other’s fire, Diego sticking his finger in Gloria’s face. Diego calls Julia, chiding her for taking Santi without telling Gloria. This ruse does not begin to convince us that he wanted anything other than to know if Julia was with Ringo. Julia says that she took Santi for a burger. Alone finally, Oso and Rosa start to kiss but Ringo, Julia and Santi pop back in. A really cute scene. But a bit too much for Rosa who ends up kissing Oso on the cheek.
Carrizo introduces "the Hurricane" from la Reina Soy Yo to Ivan (sorry, I don’t know her name here). Antunez celebrates and he, Diego, and Ivan conspire about the fight between Rosa and La Zorra. Carrizo goes into a frenzy as the “winner” arrives. Turco shows up pulling Ivan toward him with a pretend rope. Speaking of, Turco looks like he has rope burns on his face. Red and raw. Shame. Ivan comments that Turco is not the fighter he used to be. Ringo on the other hand is what champions are made of. He wishes he could sponsor Ringo, but knows Ringo would never agree to it.

Bloodied But Unbowed - Part 2
Alejo calls Ringo and tells him everyone is supporting him.
The public is rallying behind Ringo, calling him champion. He is attracting throngs of people on the street, voicing their admiration and support as he gets his picture taken time and again.
Ringo gets a call from Alejo, asking how he is. Alejo wonders if he has seen the papers which are saying that he is the real champion and what they did to him is inexcusable.
Oso goes and cries on Manuel’s shoulder. He is not the trainer he used to be. Manuel gives him a pep talk. Oso leaves, lightened and determined.
Ringo reads the article which criticizes the referee, the boxing association and Turco...they have no dignity.
Julia talks to Oso again about giving Rosa a job to help Teresa. Oso doesn’t feel right about Julia paying for the office space but agrees.
Ivan visits Manuel regarding a “delicate” matter. The fire at Julia’s was deliberate. He confesses that Brenda is the suspect as Lupe has an eyewitness. Eva is at the door, listening. Ivan tells Manuel that Julia doesn’t know. Brenda denied everything. Ivan doesn’t want to believe that Brenda could do that but she did cause a small fire previously. Manuel explains that unless someone filed charges against Brenda, there is nothing to worry about, but if they do file charges, they can claim that Brenda has psychological problems and is not responsible for her actions.
Rosa goes to visit Oso. Oso talks to Rosa about working with Teresa. Rosa suspects that Julia is behind this since Julia has been trying to get her to quit working at the factory. She finally agrees to take the job.
La Zorra arrives and deliberately mispronounces Rosa’s name again. Rosa corrects her and La Zorra tells her “you are my punching bag”! Well, this does not bode well for a warm and fuzzy friendship, does it? The argument escalates and Guachin comes in and stops the argument in its tracks. Time for the promotional photos as Diego slithers in with the photographer. Rafa comes in making goo eyes at La Zorra. Guachin gives him the I’m watching you sign.
Brenda visits Alejo complaining to Alejo about leaving her at his apartment. She tells Alejo that Ringo takes advantage of him...and she is there because he left her with the need to be with him. At first Alejo seems in no mood, telling her Ringo is my friend. Brenda (who must have seen “Sea of Love” but Ellen Barkin did it better) opens her raincoat, her only article of clothing and they start kissing. Eva, in deep thought contemplating what she heard about Brenda, picks this unfortunate time to speak with Alejo and walks right in on them. Mercifully, they were not aware of her presence. She, on the other hand, will likely have that scene seared indelibly into her brain.

Bloody But Unbowed - Part 3
The photo shoot goes amazingly well. NOT. No love lost as the two rivals spar verbally with fiery looks. After the photo shoot, Roda complains about La Zorra being there; she doesn’t like her and is going to show her she can fight even though she has to lose. It’s not personal Oso tells her. Rosa disagrees. We are treated to a full bodied melodious Cesar Evora laugh. Even Rosa can’t stay mad.
Rafa gets in the shower as does Zorra. Rafa thinks it’s Pepe and gets out and draws back the curtain and sees Zorra. He smiles and although we saw nothing, his reaction left no doubt he was impressed.
Turco shows up with his victory poster that he hangs up in Teresa’s lunch room. Oso screams at Turco, telling him to take his trash. Oso demands to know how much they paid the referee and wonders how Turco could have turned out to be such a cheat since he and Ringo trained at the same time and in the same place.
Ringo shares the papers with Oso. Referee Martinez is chastised, saying the real champion is Ringo. Oso tells Ringo about Rosa working at the cafeteria to help Teresa. Ringo teases him about him having Rosa there all the time now. Oso tears up (of course!) and a fatherly hug ensues.
Rafa tried to chat with La Zorra who isn’t too keen about answering all his questions. Call me cynical, but she’s not exactly the “chatty Cathy” type 😊 He tries to ask her out, but she evades the invite.
Ringo brings Julia x-rays of his hand. Good, no fracture. She removes his bandage and wants to give him something for the inflammation. It is quickly clear that Ringo is terrified of needles! He refuses to get the shot but will however agree to take some pills. They laugh and then she rubs some salve on his hand and bandages it. Ringo then gets serious and tells her that he wants her to be part of his life’s plan... he is going to wait for her for as long as it takes. Uh oh. It really seems as though Ringo and Julia are going to kiss when Diego come in and screams “Julia”. They break apart and the last thing we see is a close up of Diego’s livid face. Not the stuff sweet dreams are made of.
Diana
Sincere thanks to Rgv Chick who helped with some difficult (well for me anyway) dialog.
Can anyone please tell me the name of the guy in Manuel's office? Not Alejo. Or Max. Thank you!
Back to work for me tomorrow - sleep well all!
Diana
Diana, thanks for keeping us up to date in fine form. Perfect title and sentiment: “Bloody but Unbowed.” The holidays passed far too quickly. : ( Have a good one!
Two things made me smile in this episode: Santiago chanting “They’re kissing” seeing Rosa and Oso./ Rosa being all decked out in her “rosa” (pink) fight attire.
At least the press and the public saw the sham the fight was and realized that Ringo was the real winner.
The time has come for smarmy Diego to demand a divorce from his clearly ambivalent wife. Please set Julia free already if she is too responsibility ridden to do it for herself.
Thank you so much. And, from my list of things I wish I'd said: :The time has come for smarmy Diego to demand a divorce from his clearly ambivalent wife. Please set Julia free already if she is too responsibility ridden to do it for herself".
Perfect! Yes, at this point, someone has to end the charade. If it's Diego, so be it. :)
And I appreciate your noting Rosa's pink fighting gear which I saw but didn't put two and two together...
Diana
Love the title Diana. I had an 8th grade teacher who made us memorize poems each week and I remember the "bloody but unbowed...I am the captain of my soul....from one of them.
And especially loved this part of the prologue:
What defines us is not when we are at our best, but when we are at our worst. Some lives spiral downward, fast and furious. For others, the progression is slower. A series of losses, each claiming a piece of the heart, of the soul. How far can one fall? Rock bottom is but a measure of despair. Some soldier on after many would have given up and succumbed. What saves them is sheer will, determination and grit
I look forward to your intros every time you do a recap. They are always a gift.
Also got quite a chuckle out of this:
Brenda (who must have seen “Sea of Love” but Ellen Barkin did it better) opens her raincoat, her only article of clothing and they start kissing. Eva, in deep thought contemplating what she heard about Brenda, picks this unfortunate time to speak with Alejo and walks right in on them. Mercifully, they were not aware of her presence. She, on the other hand, will likely have that scene seared indelibly into her brain.
and this:
We are treated to a full bodied melodious Cesar Evora laugh. Even Rosa can’t stay mad.
I was watching the show this morning half asleep and when I heard that laugh, I thought, Good Lord! that man could have any woman he wants with that laugh. It's so marvelously seductive. What a set of pipes!
And great ending sentence...Not the stuff sweet dreams are made of.
Just a treat, my friend, and thanks for the birthday wishes. Twas a big one. But on we go.
Thank you for your always kind words and support amiga.
And, if we must be woken from our daydreams, I can think of nothing better than to hear Cesar's dulcet tones. Beautiful and melodic.
I'm happy and grateful you enjoyed the recap. I'm enjoying this TN tremendously as it is serious but not depressing and has touches of humor and lightness. Not overly enamored with Julia as she's not being truthful to Diego (or herself) but it's still early.
Diana
Brenda: Dam she's cray cray, but she sure is fun. Ya just have to become scarce when the depressive phase shows up.
Is the one you girls are calling 'the Hurricane' the gal in the sprayed on gold dressette? She is Genesis from Double Life of Estela Carrillo. She is a hoot. She was Negra in Rosario Tejeras too.
Kirby, yes (laughingly) the woman in question is the one in the "sprayed on gold dressette. I completely forgot that she was in Double Life and I saw that start to finish. Ack.
If Alejo had asked me, I would have strongly suggested he keep Brenda in the look/lust but don't touch zone. Being a practiced liar and pyromaniac to boot, heaven knows what she might do next. Unpredictable is one thing but she is a ticking time bomb. I hope Ivan and Brenda get her the help she needs before it's too late.
Diana
Diana, than you so much for such a delightful recap; and of course, your prologue is truly inspired.
My favorite scene was Santi walking in on Oso and Rosa, followed by Julia and Ringo. Oso and Rosa may make an odd couple but they sure are giving us something to look forward to...aside from that heart-melting "full bodied melodious Cesar Evora laugh" (thanks, Judy!)
I know it's useless, but I'm trying to figure out exactly what Brenda's plan is. I know she is not really interested in Alejo and is using him to make Ringo jealous (or that was her initial intent). Does she expect Alejo to go running to Ringo and tell him what they do? I suppose only a cray cray person would think that...and an even cray-crayzier person would fall for it.
Jarifa, "The time has come for smarmy Diego to demand a divorce from his clearly ambivalent wife. Please set Julia free already if she is too responsibility ridden to do it for herself." That would be really good, but Diego is too proud to let go; if anything, he'll try to get rid of Ringo and absolutely refuse to give Julia a divorce.
Diana, I haven't been able to catch the name of the other guy in Manuel's office. I was trying to look it up, but couldn't find it. I did, however, find out that Cesar Evora won The TV Adicto Golden Award as Best Actor and Jose Ron won the award for Best Male Protagonist..so hats off the to them!
Boy, Rafa served himself on a platter to La Zorro. He told her something like he’d be at her service to help in any way, like to take her to the movies, make love to her … She responds by telling him to fetch her some water.
You bring up an interesting point about Brenda. I have to admit for a split second, I wondered if Brenda might actually be falling for Alejo. Your points are very well taken although I laffed at "I suppose only a cray cray person would think that...and an even cray-crayzier person would fall for it". Absolutely!
I fear Diego will be very vindictive and give Julia a divorce over his dead body. Please don't get our hopes up Diego :) And that was pure speculation, no spoiler.
Niecie, thank you very much. I did not understand that Zorra "...responds by telling him to fetch her some water". Wow! No shyness there. Gotta give her credit. Rafa asked for it! I have a feeling though there won't be any sparring there (at least in the ring). I think she would make mincemeat out of him!!
Diana
OK, so in Brenda's Bizzaro World, she and Ringo woulda, coulda, shoulda, or have been an item, and she is doing these things to make Ringo jealous. The view from here in the kennel, is that to the victim, Alejo, jealousy and grudge sex is hardly distinguishable from the real thing.
But Santi is still the star of the show.
Good answer Rgv Chick!!!!
Kirby, I guess Brenda is a "fire starter" in more ways than one. In the blink of an eye, things just well...disintegrate...
Yes, somewhere in Brenda's addled brain, she thinks Ringo will be jealous. All he wants is for her to just stay away from him. And you're right, Alejo was really jealous. He was on the verge of throwing his friendship with Ringo away until cooler logic prevailed. But that was pre-hot office sex so Alejo's brain is likely melting right now :)
Diana
"He was on the verge of throwing his friendship with Ringo away until cooler logic prevailed. "
Over Brenda? Woof
Nobody understands why we chase cars either. Woof.
OT...judyb b....I had a 4th grade teacher Miss Hamm who had her students memorize looks. I can still recite "Trees" ...I think the poet Joyce Kilmer. One stood next to her desk and recited one of the poems in a tiny pamphlet she gave us. I think that if one was successful , she put a gold star in our books next to that poem. I used to recite " Trees" for my students when telling them the advantage of memorizing things like irregular verbs..( EX...begiin..began ..begun)
