TELEMUNDO Y MÁS (#2): El Sultán, El Señor de los Cielos 7, y más: Week of December 9, 2019

TELEMUNDO WEEKEND EDITION (continuación)

Here's Page 2 for the week.  The current evening telenovelas are as follows (all times are Eastern Standard Time):

•   8-9PM—El Sultán
• 10-11PM—El Señor de los Cielos 7

El Final del Paraíso had its gran final on Monday. Beginning Tuesday, Telemundo has devoted the 9 PM time slot to a series of stand-alone episodes in a program entitled Decisiones: Unos Ganan, Otros Pierden. Since CarayCaray is devoted to discussion of telenovelas, Decisiones will probably not be covered here.

Everyone is welcome to join in the conversation.  Since discussions of all the Telemundo novelas share the same page, please remember to put the name of the telenovela you're referring to at the top of your post, so readers can easily find the conversations they're looking for.

By common agreement, this group DOES NOT discuss previews, trailers, or any other plot information not found in a current or past episode of the current production. Spoilers WILL be removed by the admin. This includes reference to earlier productions of the story, and even the original novel. Thanks for your cooperation!

I will put up a short recap of tonight's episode later tonight.

El Sultán - Jueves - Parte 1 de 2

The Sultán and his army are off to conquer Belgrade. Suleiman asks for Allah's blessing and also prays that no believers die by the infidel's sword.

Maria comes to see Sumbul Aga, tells him she wants to become a Muslim, and asks him to help her do so. [I'm not sure why she is doing this. Perhaps she simply thinks it's a wise move, given where she is.]

For the umpteenth time, Mahidevran expresses her hatred of Hurrem and her fervent wish that Hurrem would die. Gulsah echoes her. Gulsah then gives Mahidevran something to drink that the doctor prescribed for her nerves. Gulsah tells her that she just gave her a few drops, since more would likely be fatal. Mahidevran perks up. She takes the bottle and says she will hide it, so that Mustafa won't drink it.

As Suleiman and his men march toward Belgrade, he tells Ibrahim that he misses Mustafa and Hurrem. He also tells Ibrahim, "I'd like to meet the woman who inspires your poetry."

That woman, Hatice, tells Mahidevran that she thinks the QM wants to find a husband for her. Mahidevran asks, "Is there someone in your heart?" Hatice says no. Mahidevran tells her not to worry, the QM's attempts at arranging marriages haven't been successful lately.

Daye tells QM that the son of the Vizier Kashem Pasha is asking about Hurrem. What should she tell him? QM says to tell him she's ill and can't travel. She'll go to him when she's better.

Hurrem continues to be arrogant and demanding. She tells Sumbul Aga that she's hungry, and that she and her son-to-be want quail stuffed with rice. Sumbul tells her she should eat what the others eat, but she insists on the quail. Sumbul then goes to Seker, who is apparently making the food. Seker tells him he's paying too much attention to Hurrem: "Today a quail, tomorrow an elephant."

Hurrem is summoned to see the QM. She bows and kisses the hem of the QM's robe. The QM tells her that her child must be healthy, and for that reason she will be moved to a different bedroom away from the other slave women. The QM tells Hurrem that the child is not hers, it's the Sultán's. The QM vows that if the child is born with a problem, she will kill Hurrem.

Suleiman gives the order for his men to attack the Belgrade Castle. The Ottomans are victorious. Suleiman tells the defeated people, "Don't fear us. We don't kill those in need of shelter. Belgrade is now part of the Ottoman Empire. Be loyal to me and you won't be slaves." He orders that what sounds like a substantial amount of money be given to them to build new schools.

The vizier Kashem Pasha meets with the QM and tells her that his son is worried about Hurrem. The QM says that Hurrem is in bad condition. "What a pity," says the vizier, "she's so young."

Ibrahim challenges Nasuh to a matrak match, and says that if he, Ibrahim, wins, Nasuh has to give him his sword. Nasuh refuses; the sword was a gift from Suleiman. But then Nasuh sees Ibrahim receive a written message, and he changes his mind. He agrees to the match, but if he, Nasuh, wins, he gets to see the letter Ibrahim just received (which, of course, was from Hatice). Ibrahim refuses. He then reads Hatice's message. At the end, she mentions that Hurrem is pregnant.

Ibrahim brings several messages to Suleiman. Suleiman asks to see the one from Hurrem first. After he reads the letter, Ibrahim tells him there is good news: Hurrem is pregnant. Suleiman is pleased but very surprised: "how do you know this?" he asks Ibrahim. "Hurrem's letter made no mention of this." Ibrahim tells him that there was a message from the harem.

El Sultán - Jueves - Parte 2 de 2

The scene shifts to the Vatican. The Pope (I assume) announces that Suleiman has succeded where his ancestors did not. Luis wouldn't heed our warnings. Hungary is now in two parts, and the Muslims are in the heart of Europe. The Pope warns that although the Ottoman troops have gone home, the war is not over. They will be back in the spring, and we must be ready.

A sign tells us that it is now two months later. The Sultán arrives today. A very pregnant Hurrem worries: "What if he prefers to see Mustafa and Mahidevran?" No, she tells herself, don't worry. Firial reminds Hurrem that Suleiman can't come to see her before he greets his family. "First give birth to a boy," she says, "then you'll be his wife."

Suleiman greets the QM, Mustafa, and Hatice. He walks right by Mahidevran and does not even acknowledge her presence.

Mahidevran is miserable. She asks Gulsah whether she loves her. Gulsah assures her that she does, and that she'd give her life for her. Mahidevran tells Gulsah it's not her life she wants, but Hurrem's. She explains to Gulsah that Gulsah must find a way for Hurrem to take the liquid that is fatal in large doses. "Hurrem must take it. By tomorrow she must be dead. If you do this, I'll give you anything you want."

We see Seker preparing the dessert and giving it to the official taster (presumably, to make sure it's not poisoned). The taster proclaims the dessert tasty. They then give a tray with the dessert to someone to take part of the way to Hurrem.

The Sultán is in Hurrem's room, I think. He hears the door open behind him, and Hurrem comes in. They embrace. He pats her belly, then brings her over to a full-length mirror and gives her a lovely necklace, which they both admire in the mirror.

Gulsah is waiting. Another woman, Hasibe, comes by, carrying the dessert for Hurrem. Gulsah shows Hasibe the drops and asks her to put them on all three pieces of the dessert. Hasibe doesn't want to do this. Gulsah tells her not to be afraid, the drops will just cause an allergic reaction, nothing serious. Hasibe asks what happens if the Sultán eats the dessert. Gulsah again assures her that the drops just cause an allergic reaction. No one will know that she, Hasibe, was in any way involved. [Huh? Wouldn't the person who brings the food be the first to be suspected?] Gulsah then promises, "If you do this, you'll get your weight in gold." Hasibe reluctantly takes the tray and proceeds toward Hurrem's room.

Suleiman is impressed that Hurrem has apparently learned to write while he was away. "Did you really write that letter to me?" he asks. She replies that the words were all hers, but not the handwriting. She then gets up, goes to a desk, and writes "Suleiman, I love you."

Hasibe hesitates, but then puts lots of drops on each of the three pieces of dessert. She delivers the dessert. Hurrem tells Suleiman, "I have a craving for something sweet," and she eagerly starts eating the dessert.

Juanita- thanks so much for the wonderful recap!

I've been looking over the war stuff, their first objective was Sabac castle then on to Belgrade, but there was another town, Zemun, that was close to and absorbed by Belgrade that had a fortress, this is where the wedding took place. Luis' main place is Buda Castle north in what is now Budapest.

I think the money the Sultan offered up was from the local public treasury that they captured.

there was talk if Hurrem has a boy she would then be the Sultan's wife, so to speak as I don't think at this time the Sultan had ever formally married a slave.

sultan

Busy day. Not much time to comment. But, if all the desserts had the stuff on them, does Mahidevran also want to kill Suleiman? Lots of these plots don't make much sense. Plus she's pretty crazy. She already beat up her rival. If Hurrem AND a child of the sultan died, she'd likely be found out and beheaded! Probably more for the loss of his child than loss of a concubine.

And, thanks a million, Juanita, for putting up another terrific recap! You are a trouper!

Sultan

I am so sorry I haven't been around this week. Evening work obligations have kept me from watching (I have another one tonight!) and I'll have to catch up over the weekend. Next week will be better and I can start recapping at least once a week. Fridays would be the best night for me, with recap up Saturday morning. I can also step in as needed here and there like with Preso and Paraiso. I'm hoping we can work out a reasonable schedule for all. Thanks.

Thanks very much, deb, novelera, dondi356, and Halimacandy, for your comments. deb, I'm especially happy that you're looking at the war stuff. Most of the time, it goes right by me when I watch. novelera, I too was scratching my head over the instructions to cover the dessert with the drops. I guess we can assume that neither Hurrem nor Suleiman is likely to be killed or severely impaired by the drops, but still...
dondi, I'm delighted to hear that you'll be able and willing to help with recaps starting this coming week. Halimacandy, just don't let Hurrem hear that you hope she gives birth to a girl! :-)

And MANY thanks, novelera, for offering to put up "a few bare bones lines" tonight!

"ESDLC"

Since everybody else is too drunk with the overrated Turkish TV Drama "Sultan", here's my latest thoughts on the final Season of "ESDLC":

1.) Lupita Jones (1991 Miss Universe) just declared holy war on Navarro. She's upping the ante even further against him by having her team digging up damaging dirty little secrets.

2.) Nurse Chick & Luzma having a heart to heart.

3.) Joaquin is about to become a midnight carved up Christmas Turkey as Amado slices him up.

4.) Meanwhile Diana cringed at the sight of the torture of Joaquin.

5.) Dumb Berenice still has no damn clue Jaime whacked Mommy Amuhada.

6.) Ambar still finds a way to escape law enforcement agencies.

7.) Ojeda & Dalia will get busted one way or another.

8.) Surprised Colon is back in action with DEA after surviving a headshot last Season.

9.) Castillo & Carla still having problems.

10.) Violeta needs to stop nagging.

11.) The Casillas family better step up their game if they want to take down El Capo, Volpi & Ojeda.

12.) Jaime still plotting in getting to Los Pinos.

Sin Senos 4 finale

Below is a translated summary that questions in the last paragraph whether another season is coming. Telemundo, Villalobos and Pernia say no, but Pernia earlier said that another 40 episodes were supposed to follow in January. Another article I previously linked to claimed the "finale" was intended to be a cliffhanger with tacked on updates because of the surprise cancellation. I would be happy if they posted those 40 online. Why waste them?

Queried by fans, Roberto Manrique replied that he also is clueless about Santi's fate. He apparently shot no more scenes with the mystery woman.

EL SULTÁN – VIERNES

What an excellent episode! What tension and terrific acting all around! As time goes on, I am more and more impressed by the actor playing Suleiman. I totally believe he’s that historical figure. He shows all the aspects of a complex man. He’s a warrior. He understands his enemies. He has the capacity to show mercy to conquered people. He’s capable of a great deal of love.

So Hurrem is gorging on the desserts while Suleiman doesn’t take a bite. She passes out.

That excellent female doctor of the 16th century figures out she was poisoned, wakes her with medieval smelling salts, and gets her to throw up the poison. [Were there female doctors in that era? I suppose men in the Muslim world were not permitted to treat women, so perhaps there were.]

Suleiman is not happy with Ibrahim, perhaps another case of his not managing his “sultan’s rooms” duties. He orders him to find out who is behind it and, by the way, what if he ate the dessert?

The QM finds out what happened. Suleiman tells the unconscious Hurrem that she’s the sultana and she must fight. QM looks sour.

Poor Hasibe, who sprinkled the poison on the desserts, sobs and tells Gulsah she deceived her saying it would only give Hurrem an allergic reaction that would keep her from Suleiman’s bed. Gulsuh suffocates her to keep her quiet and then hangs her to make it look like suicide.

As before with the case of the stolen ring, Ibrahim gets to the bottom of what’s going on.

Mahidevran pretty much throws Gulsuh under the bus, telling her it's all her fault.

Ibrahim interrogates Gulsuh, starting gently and then slaps her. Gulsuh, probably because her mistress didn’t exactly support her, says that Mahidevran gave her the poison. Ibrahim shuts her up and then swears her to silence.

Ibrahim tells Suleiman that the one who poisoned Hurrem hung herself. Suleiman, with a pretty cynical expression on his face: “Then she took the secret to her grave.” He then tells Ibrahim that the traitor is near to him.

Suleiman goes to see Mahidevran, who clutches Mustafa, telling him that his family will be together. Suleiman leaves without saying anything.

Suleiman comes to tell his mother to watch Mahidevran, who he knows poisoned Hurrem or he’ll kill her himself with his bare hands.

Suleman tells Ibrahim he went to see Mahidevran to tell her he never wants to see her again, but he could not do it. His face full of suffering, he tells his friend that he cannot cause Mustafa this pain. Her hour of punishment won’t be right now, but he won’t forget what she did.

Ibrahim and Mahidevran talk. He tells her he knows all: the ring, the beating of Hurrem, and the poison. If this keeps up, he can’t protect her. Apparently he once swore to take care of her if Suleiman cannot. He tells her to stay away from Hurrem. She tells him that the Russian hates them both.

sultan

Wow, novelera. What a terrific recap of a terrific episode! You captured everything succinctly and beautifully.

I was a bit surprised that Ibrahim apparently has long-standing ties to both Gulsah (since they were at some other palace together) and Mahidevran, who he says is very dear to him since he vowed to protect both her and Mustafa (probably as part of his duties to the Sultán). And apparently he's still trying to protect Mahi, cautioning her to stay away from Hurrem and focus on Mustafa. Mahi, however, isn't sure she can or will do this.

One thing that isn't clear to me is why Ibrahim and Hatice have to be so secretive about their love for each other. Is it a class issue? I know that Ibrahim is technically a slave, but he has an august position as the Sultán's right-hand man. I'm not sure what Hatice's class status is. I think she was married and her husband died, but that doesn't tell me what she is vis a vis Ibrahim.

Like you, I'm really enjoying this telenovela. Can't wait for Monday!

Sultan

excellent recap novelera!

you very well captured the essence of the suspense.

I think Ibrahim also told Mahidevran to ditch Gulsah (good move for Gulsah to get her away), send her to another palace or something, at least for now.

Ibrahim..you need to listen to Mahvi-Devi, the Rusa hates you both!!

sultan

I was at a monthly gathering of friends and thus watched the episode late and put up a short recap late. So I left a fair amount of things out.

I suspect it was on purpose that Ibrahim had his conversation with Mahidevran about her plot in an anteroom to Suleiman's bedroom. She could overhear laughter and joy coming from within. I was surprised by Ibrahim's being on Team Mahi. But I had the impression it was because of some actual oath of honor he'd taken to protect her.

Juanita, my general sense is that the forbidden nature of Ibrahim and Hatice's feelings for each other is rooted in the concept of women being property. I had the sense that it was sort of accepted that a man might fall for a person of a lower class or even a slave and raise her to his level. Suleiman's mother doesn't like her son's doing so, but she can't really oppose it. But women were married off by their parents and were even bargaining chips. I think it would have been inconceivable that the daughter of a sultan could marry a former slave. [At least I think that's what Ibrahim was in the past; didn't they show him being abducted?]

sultan

novelera, I too was surprised to see Ibrahim apparently on Team Mahi, and like you, I decided that his oath to protect her and Mustafa explained his actions.

Yes, perhaps you're right that Ibrahim's being a slave is what makes his relationship with Hatice so problematic. I don't recall their showing his being abducted, but even Ibrahim says that he is Suleiman's slave.

SIN SENOS 4 FINAL, SULTAN & GENERAL

Halimacandy, thanks! I did see Carmen and Gregorio act out their preferred ending of Cata and Titi living together in a beach house. Their characters joked about that possible future in an actual scene after Cuina betrayed them and kidnapped Titica.

I didn't realize Gustavo Bolivar was elected to Colombia's senate last year. That might explain why he didn't write this season. And maybe his politics pissed off Telemundo executives? I reread Amazon reviews of his sequel novel and readers were pissed that Sin Tetas Si had no ending because Bolivar promised a Part 2 third novel. It might be helpful to know how much its plot matched Telemundo's last 4 seasons.

I watched part of Sultan when it ran on MundoFox, but couldn't keep up with it. It's beautiful but very repetitive. I'm also struck by how much its red headed female lead resembles Russian NRA spy Maria Butina. I prefer the modern belly dancing, soundtrack and beloved familiar actors in El Clon which has several more weeks. It's fun to watch future Santi and Diabla in earlier slightly similar roles.
