El Dragón #82, 1/20/20: Finale - Sayonara
This
has been a tale of moral relativism unlike no other we have seen
before from this network. It serves to remind us that all that is
called morality is relative to its people of origin. We may agree
with it or not, but it is there to be dealt with. May no one else
who reads this be in as much conflict over it as Miguel Garza.
Mexico:
Miguel met the Pig in the prison's visiting area. The Pig tried
provoking him about varioous things including Ishiro but Miguel
remained cool, saying he was there to enquire about the deaths of his
parents. He brought up the recording Adela found. The Pig said that
the recording had caused Lamberto's death becase it was proof of
Roberto's betrayal. There was a flashback to the meeting in the
house in Ciudad Juarez where he had his heart attack.
Miami:
Edna was loca about finding Miguel's money,which is now
invisible to them. She still could not prove his financial crimes.
Howard's boss told her she was out of line and told Howard to do his
job, which was to arrest Edna.
Mexico:
Miguel talked to Adela about this, saying that he had lived with
undeserved guilt his entire life. Flaco called to tell him about
Edna's arrest, which meant that he and Adela were almost home free.
All his enemies are now disposed of.
Pig
had another visitor who told him about Edna's and her husband's
arrests. They discussed his escape plan. He had scores to settle.
Miguel
thanked Trejo for having accompanied him to Japan and both Trejo and
Flaco for their help. He talked about moving to his island.
Sayonaras and bows were exchanged. Flaco then checked his own Swiss
bank account and saw $100 Million US.
Adela
saw her grandmother and asked why she wasn't packed for the move to
the island. Abuela said she didn't really want to leave her friends
behind, but eventually started packing.
Miguel
visited Hector, who was preparing to move to Europe. They talked
about how they had different methods with the same goals. Hector
talked about seeing specialists in Germany, saying that hope was the
last thing to lose.
Ciudad
Juarez: Dora began writing her definitive confession of what
Miguel should know.
Mexico
City: Adela spoke to the architect of the island house, talking
about a study for Miguel with lots of sunlight, a playroom for her
future children, and a garden they could play in. Dora called her
and asked her to come to see her so she could give her something for
Miguel. She was fingering the envelope during the call. Adele said
she would see her the next day.
Pig's
men talked about their plan, which was happening the next day.
Hector
and Ana prepared for the awards presentation.
Miguel
and Adela talked about Dora. She told him she had no idea why Dora
wanted to see her. He said he wanted Peligros to accompany her. He
had forgiven Dora and hoped that Jorge would eventually forgive him.
They talked about her grandmother. Adela said she could not believe
that they were about to have a happy life.
Hector
received a major award, Top Journalist of the Year. He gave a long
speech dedicating the award to various people starting with his dead
sister, ending with his wife and daughter, and calling on the end of
censorship and the quest for truth. He wanted Mexico to elevate
itself and become a safe place. He was appropriately applauded.
Dora
handed the letter to Adela, who told her that Miguel had forgiven
her. Dora thought that this might change once he reads the letter.
She confessed that she was the one who had gotten Tacho out of
prison. Adela bore her no ill will and told her she would see to it
that Miguel reads the letter. Dora said that “We do crazy things
for love” which includes the keeping of secrets. Adela agreed.
Jorge came into the room; he appeared to be on his way to getting
back to normal.
The
Pig's accomplices painted some lines down the highway disguised as
workers employed by the relevant government agency while at the
prison he was cuffed and taken out of his cell.
A
crowd – including journalists – gathered to watch the Pig being
delivered to the court building. He wore kevlar over his prison
khakis. It looked like he only had socks on his feet.
The
Pig and his accomplices drove out, abandoned the pickup, and got into
another car. They pulled into a parking garage where Carmen was
waiting.
Adela
left Dora's letter on the nightstand for Miguel just as her phone
rang. The Sow had called her, saying the Pig had escaped and wanted
to kill her. Adela asked where he was and she said she didn't know.
She said “You have to help me” and Adela stupidly agreed to meet
her
Gary
realized that this escape had been planned but had no real clue that
he was in the same room with the Pig's highest-level accomplices. He
made a shot-in-the-dark accusation against them but got the expected
reaction. He walked out, saying that this was not a coincidence.
Miguel
and Ishiro found the pickup. Peligros called re further
instructions, saying that he was listening to the police frequencies
for more information. Miguel said he and Ishiro would split up and
search, then the Pig called to tell him that he had Adela, who yelled
to Miguel not to come after her because the Pig intended to kill him.
Pig said he wanted a face to face without weapons. [We knew how
this would really go]. He was to come alone or Adela would die.
The Pig then ordered his Sow out of the car and he left her behind,
armed. Miguel told Ishiro he was to stay behind.
Miguel
arrived at the parking garage.
Gary
got into a police helicopter and took off.
Miguel
made the mistake of turning his back on the Pig to try to free Adela.
Adela
seemed aware that this was going to end badly as she flashed back to
earlier times with Miguel. She kicked the Pig with all her strength.
He lost control of the car and slammed into the side of a warehouse.
A
few days later Miguel got the envelope from Dora. As he returned it
to the envelope Peligros and Ishiro talked at the entrance to the
hotel Miguel had purchased. Peligros warned Ishiro that the police
might still be looking for him. The young samurai said that he
doubted that Gary would look for him. Peligros agreed, saying that he
would not fnd him. Miguel came out and the three of them left. All
were dressed in black.
Japan:
Miguel and Tadamichi met in a pagoda-roofed garden structure as they
discussed the journey and the Garza family secrets. Miguel said
that he did not know the man he found in himself. Tadamichi replied
that a man doesn't know the darkness inside himself. He told Miguel
he was proud of him and bowed. Miguel told him that he was ashamed
of what he (himself) had become. He wanted to think that his parents
would be proud of him had they been with him. Tadamichi was shocked,
saying that he didn't know the truth. He then told Miguel that
Roberto had wanted to kill his father, but in the attempt had killed
his mother and that he was the one who had advised Lamberto to kill
his own son.
Miguel
said that both of them were wrong, telling him that this had been a
trap by the Pig. He asked why Lamberto sent him to Japan. Tadamichi
told him that in the beginning it was intended to be temporary and
intended to help Miguel to get over the trauma of the loss of his
parents. However, when he saw Miguel's potential he raised him in
his own ways Miguel asked whether – or said – that his life and
their friendship had been a lie.
Tadamichi
answered that he had been the most true thing in his own life. He
bowed, saying that his work was done and that now, saying he must pay
with his life. Miguel answered that he had taught him that it was
better to have an idea than a sword. Tadamichi said that was right,
and that he (himself) was as guilty as Lamberto because he
had robbed Miguel of his parents. That was dishonorable.
Miguel's
Island: Miguel had returned there alone.

So the killers, Peligros and Ishiro live. Miguel who orchestrated the deaths of many lives, too. Albeit, alone on a beautiful isla.
Flaco and Trejo got rich. AND Jimena lives? Glad Jorge still traumatized..There was never a happy ending for Miguel....ruthless in his revenge. But poor Edna....she gets prison......And Howard still up to his sexcapades? Thank you, reapers from the bottom of my heart.
You did an amazing job bringing this novella to life.

I don't think there could be any more to this story. I have to say that while male audiences seem to prefer car chases and violence to romance, I don't think that this makes for a better story.
Although I sensed that Dora carried a lot of guilt I really felt nothing for her at the end. She may have been right in the first place to try to keep these truths from Miguel for his own good; I'm not sure. The big question is whether she can live with herself now.

Thanks, Urban. Your finale recap was outstanding—as usual. I watched this the first couple of weeks and had thought I might binge watch this OnDemand. So, another thanks is in order for saving me from wasting my time since with this depressing ending I would have been disappointed since Miguel seemed to end up in a worse state than when we first met him.
With all those millions Edna can steal Weinstein's lawyers and get away Scott free. Then does she get to keep the money? Gary can now get his hard earned bonus.
I would hope that Ishiro and Peligros got at least as much dinero as Flaco did.
Ishiro doesn't have to worry about returning to Japan unless he wants to. Peligros will stick around to protect Dora and Jorge.
Adela's fiery death made me think of Appolonia.
I wonder what the ratings were both here and in Mexico.

I don't even know what to say about this ending. As soon as I saw happy Adela making plans for a house, I knew she was destined for death. I would want Miguel to know that Adela's last heroic action was guided by his "bible."
So is Miguel going to spend the rest of his days on that island? Will he grow a long beard and live like a savage? Maybe I should "Cast Away" a soccer ball into the gulf so that it can find it's way to Gecko Island and Miguel can name it Mikey.

Things finally slowed down last night so Viewerville could grasp the state of mind of the main characters.
RIP Adela. Ya'll saw many clues along the way and predicted she wouldn't survive. She was young, foolish, and in love. Since Mig entered her life, she'd been shot and bombed, but still she wanted to remain by his side.
Adela did make one last gesture of feistiness. She kicked the hell out Epig as he tried to speed away.
Urban, your prologue is superb. Interesting that despite the moral relativism, the writers refused to have Mig kill Pig.
So no good investigative reporter is going to snoop the setup of Edna?
Surprised we never saw Jimena again. Looks like she turned out to be the smartest person in this TN.
The writers have paved the way for Mig to become an avenger of sorts. With his money, cerebral skills, martial arts magic, and the new (to him) knowledge of Matthew 16:26 [thanks Urban for pointing this out], maybe in any future sequel he'll fight to protect the defenseless, instead of the lousy Garza lousy lineage.

Well, I fell asleep and on!y saw the last half hour which was more than enough to make me decide that if this is the direction novellas are going, I am going to have to find another escape from reality.
You know that feeling you get when you are leaving the movie theater after a really love!y , uplifting movie ( Sound of Music, Little Women...) Well, this left me with the opposite of that . This was a grim show with a grim ending.
I guess that the saying "live by the sword; did by the sword" applies here. That scene in Japan reminded me of one in Highlander the tv series. Your best friend stands by to kill you in case your own sword thrust does not do the trick.
I keep thinking of the 4 questions a teacher told her students to ask themselves as they made their ways through life " What do I want to do ? What do I want to be? What do I want to have? What do I want to give? " Mig and company should have been asking themselves those questions .
One of my favorite quotes is from the Beatles, " And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make. "
There was a show in the 60s about doctors in a hospital. Every episode started with the old doctor's voice saying, " Man..woman...birth...death...infinity. I suppose in the end...that's it.
Enjoy having that romantic private isle all to yourself ,Mig. All the money in the world can't buy happiness or peace.

Kirby: I was not surprised Edna got arrested by the IRS (assuming Miguel framed her for corruption). I knew her law enforcement career was going to end BADLY. Big question is whether Gary gets her job ?
Susanlynn: NOT shocked Adela got whacked. I agree with RVG Chick: all signs were pointing toward a fiery & explosive deadly ending for her.

You all have said most everything there is to say. My only contribution is that, although poor Adela had to die, it was necessary to add any hope of another season, simply because of the lack of chemistry. They were boring to watch together. And Miguel finally got the entire truth, but at what cost? I don’t know if I could stand another season of Miguel back to his man whoring ways. I think there are enough loose ends to delve Into, Or create new antagonists. UA, amazingly articulate prologue! Tullí commented on IG recently that this was his favorite character to date. Maybe due to his complexity and the “moral relativism” as uA put it. Because it is probably easier to play a character who is stagnant, but dynamic characters get all the fun.
I am tired of the nihilism in general in entertainment these days and in recent novelas: “La candidata”, “El Príncipe” (at least with that one you could choose a happier ending on line) and now this. I am sure I am missing many more. Maybe that is why “Ringo” a very traditional novela was a hit in Mexico and is doing well here. I am hoping that this trend ends soon because it has been around for a while now.
Jarifa..I am right there with you. I am afraid the new dismal direction of novellas is a sign of the times. Bah

Thank you UA. I can't imagine having to do this recap for this dismal final. I had the feeling that nothing was going to end well. Hated to see Adela killed off. I'm glad that Pig was dead, but I also thought Carmen should have been killed off too. Adela was stupid for falling into Pig and Carmen's trap. She should have known better than to go alone.
So what are we supposed to be happy about anyway? The fact that Miguel could finally shed tears at the end? This is the crappiest ending I have ever seen for a TN. The only one who left really happy was Flaco, with his $100 million. Disappointed that we never saw anything more for Jimena and she did not have to pay for her embezzlement.
And Miguel ends up all alone with his tears. Big deal. Ishiro is alone and so is Peligros. He never had a love interest anyway.
Thank you to all my fellow recappers who muddle through this with me. I also appreciated your efforts. So thank you again to Urban Anthropologist, Jardinera, and Esther. You did a fantastic job.

I don't want there to be a sequel to this. There was so little emotion beyond anger and too much bloodshed. Too many villains to hate, too, while the characters we were supposed to root for were not only flawed but downright foolhardy at times.
This series gets good points for production values, location shooting, camera work, and actor performances. The music was also excellent. It also seems to make a point that someone like Miguel will never find peace. Michael Corleone could have told him that.

The ending left such a bad taste in my mouth. Why the hell did they have to insert Tadamichi into the Lamberto/Roberto storyline at the very end? The writers never even explained the background of how Tadamichi and Don Lamberto knew each other.

The ending left such a bad taste in my mouth. Why the hell did they have to insert Tadamichi into the Lamberto/Roberto storyline at the very end? The writers never even explained the background of how Tadamichi and Don Lamberto knew each other.
I'm so disgusted, I'll have to wait until later to put in my other two cents.

I think a third season would require an entirely new story. Something that forces Miguel off the island. They could tie in enough stuff for the first few episodes. And then start anew. But there are still Edna and Howard to chase him with the law. His demons to peruse him. It would have to be a good story. Maybe find a Miguel with some redemption. But that’s just the writer in me thinking about what could come next. Jimena is now one of the major players in the game but still has a torch burning for Miguel. If they pulled in Angelique they would for sure get ratings. But they said after 3veces Ana, that being an actual couple made it uncomfortable acting together, at least in the steamy parts. If there is an audience they will do it.
Victoria, yes FC and AN had great chemistry in Amor Real. I also saw it between FC and Lucero in Alborada.

I went to bed early last night, so I .missed this first episode and appreciate any details . I plan to start recording this show and watch the next day. Anything is better than the drugs, political corruption, and violence of the new telenovelas.
I watch a lot of reruns and get lost in a happy past ( Renegade, Waltons, Golden Girls , Hart to Hart, etc) but I get tired of all the ads for preplanned funeral expenses and Medicare Advantage. Uff.

Well, this may be the last word on El Dragon. Maybe that's why it was originally called El Ultimo Dragon. (A nod to the Last of the Mohicans, maybe?) Glad they thought better of it.
Victoria--I agree with your assessment. Disappointing. It started out interesting, good characters, pretty good character development and clever action scenes--although overly violent for my taste (like I didn't really need to see Mig being tortured by the Columbian--it added nothing in the end).
For me the finale was strung out longer than what we are used to--a blitz in the last 5 minutes. Well, they gave us that, too, but by then, it felt more like the last of the air leaking out of a punctured balloon. I was offended that Miguel considered beheading Tadimichi. So they saved the big reveal that it was Taddi that advised Lamberto to kill Roberto until the very very end. Ok, big deal.
I also didn't like that he left Edna with her reputation destroyed and in prison--the only honest cop (if you don't count Marco) on the show. Yes, maybe she was a little obsessed, but rightly so. Are we supposed to guess that he did the right thing later on?
It WAS sad that this man of so many talents, lost the two loves of his life and ended up alone on a beach. Maybe he had the house built and he's continuing to dabble in finances, but for what--he's in effect a very rich hermit.

He didn't like the character or story, but Lord High insisted his exclusivity contract demanded he accept the role. Evidently, there went Fernando's exclusivity contract out the window.

Doris (over on Hijas) looked into FC’s new telenovela. Apparently it will be the story of a poor boy growing up to be a narco king. How disappointing. Well, regardless, I’ll give it a look-see and if I like what I see, I’’ll look some more.

Fernando isn't a kid anymore; on his nect birthday he will be 54. He has to branch out.
Telemundo is too fond of the narco stuff for my taste and Fernando didn't do too well in comedy novelas, so where else is he going to go?

Too bad they can't make telenovelas about middled-age women falling in love with gorgeous middle-age men like FC. Just as an example, Adela Noreiga is now 51, and I'm sure she has aged nicely. Even though she doesn't want to act anymore, nor Angelica Rivera, there are still middle-age actors Televisa can draw from and satisfy audiences that want nothing to do with narcos. It's crazy that below-30's aren't sick of them yet either.

My gratitude goes out to all the recappers who day-by-day dedicated their days, time, and voice to us so we could fill in the parts we missed or misunderstood, so we could enjoy sharing our thoughts with our Caraymates, and so we could have something fun to read with our morning coffee or whenever was our habit each day—sometimes even before the birds sang.
Some of you have been recapping for a while now with such commitment and devotion that I feel as if I am able to tell each one's writing style almost immediately. I even wish I knew more about what your daily life was life was like so I could envision you crunching away over your tablets or notebooks, writing or typing away furiously while trying not to squint or bang your fist.

It's really a pleasure to read everyone's unique style; and I love the different approaches each of you use to recap. The detail given in each recap is unbelievable; and I can see why you spend several hours writing, revising, spell checking, and finalizing. Not to mention learning HTML! I miss Carlos's support and defensive of the 'bad girl', e.g., Laisha Wilkins or Grettell Valdez, etc., so I appreciate Kirby and Steve stepping in with their male opinions, even though they might not be so pro-'bad-girl'. Kirby your comments re Ximena and Adela came close though!

I am going to go into Caray withdrawal badly since I have no desire to watch Ringo, Rubí, or Vencer el Miedo. I think La Doña would be interesting, however, I'll pass on another telenovela with David Zepeda. Instead, I'll try to hold on until Operación Pacífico starts in February. Meanwhile, I'll do what I usually do re-watch older novelas and finish watching Médicos, Línea de la Vida.
I will miss everyone greatly! Please promise you will recap again! Please! Y'all add so much to my humdrum life.

Thank you for the kudos. I do hunch over, legal pad in front of me, glasses on, pen in one hand, coffee cup in the other, and tv on. The afternoon shows take less time, but I just can't do a 9 or definitely a 10 pm show regularly any more. It takes too much out of me, so I raise a glass of thankfulness for those who do. I long for the days, never to return, when we had 8 and 9 o'clock shows and Cristina at 10. Those were also the days when the tns ran to near 200 episodes.
I think you'd enjoy Rubi, if you never saw the original. So far there's only been one nasty guy and Rubi kneed him in the nuts.
