Novelera, I have to thank you for mentioning Bosch. I had never heard of it or the novels. I started watching the series on Sunday and am ready to start season 2 today. I also was able to recommend it to two friends of mine who are also enjoying it a lot. I started to subscribe to Netflix when they dropped Longmire on cable. I never read the novels but the first two are on one of my book piles next to the couch. : )

Novela comedies aren't really my cup of tea, but I'm staying with this one, at least for now. It's a relief not to have to worry about seeing more pain porn, such as we were subjected to on La Dreadful 2.

What follows is not a recap but just some notes about things I found interesting or puzzling. One was supposedly free-spirit Emiliano urging Luis to be honest with his two women. Even Luis found the advice strange coming from Emiliano.

Though I doubt this was intended to be funny, I burst out laughing at the absurdity of Fernando's telling his Spanish class to continue reading James Joyce's Ulysses (presumably in Spanish translation) and they'll discuss it the next day. WHAT?? My guess is that none of the writers or anyone else connected with this novela has ever read or even tried to read Ulysses. It's one of the most complex books in the English language. Entire books have been devoted to interpreting it. There is NO WAY that a high school Spanish class is going to be asked to read it.

I'm frankly not interested in the lives of the teenagers in this novela. Why doesn't Ale want her mother to come into her room when she's got something wrapped around her breasts? How old is Ale? Is it possible that Remedios doesn't know she has breasts?? Or does Ale want to present as a boy (i.e., flat-chested)? Both of these explanations seem unlikely. Later, Ale sees one of her classmates kissed by a boy in a restaurant, and she runs off crying. (Yawn)

I enjoyed Emiliano refer to Gloria as Lady Silicon. (Seems the description would also fit La Doña.)

Remedios tells Emiliano that his kissing her at the open house has cost her her real estate job. He tells her that wasn't his intention (True. His intention was probably to have sex with her on the floor at the open house.)

With much urging from Remedios' father, Max goes after R's former boss at the real estate company, accusing him of putting his hand up her skirt (or wherever). The boss informs him that no, she "quit" because clients saw her kissing a guy at the open house. That shuts Max up.

Remedios pushes Connie to agree to have dinner with guapo journalist Roger Montero. Connie winds up accidentally spilling a bowl of food on Roger's shirt. (This apparently turns him on. At the end of the episode, he kisses her.)

Driving, Plutarco hits a bicyclist. She's not badly hurt. Indeed, she's eager to calm Plutarco down with a massage. Apparently this very fit young woman works at a nearby gym, where she gives massages. She gives him her card, in case he changes his mind. Uh huh.

Luis is on the phone with Aurora. She tells him she wants marriage, not just papers. He assures her that he misses her and adores her. Oops: suddenly, from the next room, Luis' daughter asks "Papi, who were you talking to?"

Obviously, I've left out a lot. I hope other folks will add to and where needed correct what I've said.

Glad you're enjoying Bosch, Jarifa. At first I had to adjust to the actor, who didn't quite match the character in my mind from the novels by Michael Connelly. The age is right, but I had pictured a larger man. I've completely gotten over it thanks to Titus Welliver's fine performances in the role.

100 dias. Juanita: I think that was an evening World Literature class that Fernando was teaching for adults rather than 1 of his daytime hs Spanish classes. I thought it was kind of sweet the way Remedios' father and Max went to the real estate office to defend her. Poor Max! Finding out about Emiliano that way. But anyway, I hope that creepy boss was really scared. I wonder if Ale is upset because she has a crush on her female partner in the Spanish research project. I'm thinking she may turn out to be gay and not know how to handle it. Ale's problem doesn't seem all that comic, but since this is a comedy, I hope things get resolved for her. The plot keeps thickening on Luis and his 2 "wives." He does deserve to suffer.

Thanks very much, SpamProf, for your response to my remarks/questions. I guess I wasn't paying enough attention to the class Fernando was teaching. I knew that he taught high school Spanish and just assumed that was the class that was reading Ulysses. A World Lit class for adults makes more sense, though I'm still not convinced that it makes sense to ask them to read Ulysses.

And yes, you may well be right about Ale's being gay. That would also explain why she was so emotional when she phoned her mother and said she needed to see her and wanted to stop lying to her. I guess we'll find out soon. One thing I like about Telemundo is that it tends not to drag situations on forever.
 

100 dias. Thanks, Juanita! And what a great mother Remedios turns out to be! Also, I liked the way that Max was (eventually) understanding about Ale's not being his biological daughter, but his daughter in every other way. And Emiliano deserved to be gobsmacked.

SpanProf, it looks like you nailed it re Ale. And I agree, Remedios's response to Ale was superb: understanding, supportive, loving.

I loved Jimena's bizarre sleep mask with wide open eyes painted on it.

I wonder how much longer it will be before Jimena and Aurora figure out that Flaco and Gordo are one and the same.
 

100 dias. Also 1 mystery solved. I had wondered whether Jimena was a lawyer or paralegal in Constanza's and Plutarco's firm. It turns out that she is a lawyer--presumably an associate rather than a partner. I too thought her facemask was hilarious! :)

I’m up to #88. Thought I’d find more time to watch since I’m working from home but, no way.

Now we are getting lots Polish words in the translation. Ladies?

It's not the same since the departure of Ibrahim (aka feed, dog lord). Arrogant as he was, I miss him.

Poor Firuze, no need for poison with Hurrem around. I liked her and so did Suleiman for a moment.

I laugh every time a new challenger rises up to face Hurrem. They think they have what it takes but, no. I don’t hold out much hope for Sah Sultan to get the job done.

I am very happy with the return of Bali Bey! I’m aware of Kuruluş: Osman. I plan to find the time to watch someday. If you are a fan of Burak Özçivit, Kara Sevda is his big hit. It’s currently on Uni as Amor Eterno and I think you can find English subs online. Or check out Calıkuşu (aka Lovebird), you can find English subs online. He starred in that with Fahriye Evcen who is his wife IRL. I only saw the first two episodes of that before it left Netflix.

If you are interested in seeing more MC actors in other shows:

I watched the first season of The Gift, a Netflix original, starring Beren Saat (from Fatmagül) and Mehmet Günsür (our Prince Mustafa). I thought it was meh but it was only 8 episodes, 1 hour each.

I watched the first season of a current dizi, Babil (10 episodes). It’s a mini reunion of MC. The actors who played Suleiman (Halit Ergenç), Mahidevran (Nur Fettahoğlu) and Rustem (Ozan Güven) have lead roles. I liked it a lot. Don’t know when/if they will resume, production has been shut down.

Next, I’m planning to watch, Fi, with Ozan Güven and Mehmet Günsür.

#88 is good, I was drifting but this pulled me right back into it.

in the following ones I was looking for Boris Karlof or Lon Chaney lurking in the dark stone castles in the flickering candle light. (they turned down the candles)

I thought of Ibrahim as a genius, arrogant for sure, but I looked at the "Sultan is the Lion, but I am the tamer" business as a way to control their enemies and leave the Sultan out of it. I'll miss him too but don't call me Hatice.

loved the Firuze story but the captions were jumbled at the end, I kind of got that the real Firuze and the guy that supposedly wanted her dead were worried about her, and then there was the part later when the Sultan was being poisoned with the good guys / bad guys pointing at each other where Ibrahim figured it might have been her.

I like Bali Bey but as you said earlier how long can a good guy be good here, and now, as Bali Bey puts it, he is caught between two fires.

Mustafa is proving himself to be quite the prince, this can't end well, can it?

SpanProf, I totally agree. I preferred Costanza when she was doing some lawyerly sparring with Remedios' former boss, ending with, "How much will it cost to save your marriage this time?"

At times, I find it difficult to believe that all these people are friends. Especially Jimena, who seems like a total airhead. It's hard to see her as a lawyer, and hard to see her and Connie as associates or friends. IIRC, in one of the first episodes, Jimena is boasting that while others may have marital problems, she doesn't, because she did a better job of choosing a mate. !!!
