Hija #72 part 1

Una Carta lo Cambia Todo.

Slight rewind to the dinner table battle between Demir and Oyku.

Why do I have to eat? Because I’m sick? No, because you have to grow. Oyku… you’re right to be mad, says Demir. So, why did you lie, asks Oyku. How could someone lie to their own daughter like that? Is my disease that serious? Am I really that sick? Answer me, dad!

Demir shakes his head and all he can say in response is…no. Oyku continues with her questions, why do you say are lying for my own good? Candan interjects, why don’t we talk after dinner. Oyku has a problem with that, too. I don’t want to talk to you anymore either, Candan, she says. With that, Oyku gets up to go to her room.

Candan tells Demir, she’s just a child. It’s a normal reaction. Demir says he’s the one who is not normal. He’s a useless father. A child should be able to trust their father. I want to protect her, but I’m the one who hurts her the most. Candan thinks Demir should stop blaming himself. But Demir can’t be consoled. I’m not a child, he says.

At the tea house Ugur asks Ahmed, what did you tell Demir? The truth, answers Ahmed. What a surprise, says Ugur, you learned something new. I told him the truth, Ahmed says, what are you going to do about it? Ugur says, let’s go. What? Ugur tells Ahmed, you are coming with me and you are going to tell Demir exactly what happened that night. Things start to heat up. Ahmed tells Ugur to leave before there is trouble. Ugur says he’s already in trouble. Leave, shouts Ahmed. Or, what are you going to do, asks Ugur. He’s not backing down. He tells Ahmed he is not the cowardly child he was in the past. Ugur is not afraid of Ahmed or Cemal. He warns Ahmed, I’ll go to the police if you don’t come with me.

It gets physical. Ahmed grabs Ugur and yells, enough, get out of here! Ahmed, with the help of another patron, manages to toss Ugur out of the tea house into a muddy puddle. He tells Ugur, Cemal already threatened me because of you. I’ve had enough beatings. Everyone is after me. Ahmed threatens, you will both pay for this. Get out of here before I kill you!

Ugur kneels in the street for a moment and then gets up and walks away. He is despondent. He talks to himself; Ah Ugur, life knocks you down again. You’ve always been a useless and always will be. He thinks back to early days. Two guys accuse him of trying to cheat them out of money from a job they did together. Ugur responds that Hikmet took it all and I never got my share. They don’t know or care about Hikmet. One of them says, If you don’t bring the money….and pulls a blade.

Just then Demir walks up and asks, what’s going on? The guys tell Demir to get lost, they are just talking. This is how you talk, asks Demir. Two against one? That’s not fair. Ok, let’s talk. Demir disarms the guy with the knife and knocks him to the ground. Ugur hits the other guy and Demir and Ugur run off. God bless you man, says Ugur, they would have killed me. Demir assures him that it would never happen. We are together, you are not alone. We are brothers, Demir tells him and he will never leave him. Ugur snaps back to reality.

Candan is in bed. Demir knocks and asks to enter. He comes in to get some things. Are you staying on the couch again, she asks. Yes, I’m not sleepy maybe I’ll fall asleep if I watch TV. Candan gives him a pillow and says she will look for another place as soon as possible. Demir says there is no hurry, we can work it out. Candan says this won’t work for her if they are like this. Demir says, whatever you want and leaves.

Hija #72 part 2

Demir peeks in on Oyku as she sleeps. He thinks back to dinner when Oyku asked, why are you lying to me? Am I really that sick? Why did you lie and say you did it for my own good? Demir closes the door and sees Oyku’s blue note book on the table. He rips out a page and starts to write. He also erases the blackboard. (It said Oyku - Iron man go on a trip.)

Ugur walks to the top floor of a nearby abandoned building. He walks to the edge and looks way down at the ground. He thinks of Demir’s last words to him, “He said you killed my father. Say something! The night they killed my father, were you there?” He thinks of Ahmed tossing him out of the tea house.

Ugur tells himself, jump and end your suffering. Jump so that everyone will be better off. There are two young squatters nearby who see him. One says to the other, who is he? Will he jump? They realize he might do it and hurry over to Ugur. Stop, friend, don’t jump! Ugur turns to them and says what are you doing here? Leave me alone. I don’t know your problem but don’t do it, one urges him. The other young man says, you won’t die from this height, you will just be paralyzed.

Ugur looks down, turns, smiles and says, Is that what you think? Yes, lets go inside. They ask if he’s ok. He thanks them and wants to treat them to tea. No thanks, we just want you to get home safe. Ugur asks them, how long have you been friends? Since childhood, they say. Ugur gives them advice. Take care of each other. Appreciate these moments. That’s what friends are for. Try not to hurt each other and good luck. (I suppose he’s thinking of his long friendship with Demir.) Ugur leaves and the young men wonder what was wrong.

Ugur arrives home. He thinks of Demir saying stay out of my life, I never want to see you again. Tears fall.

Early next morning, Demir leaves a note for Oyku on her pillow--from Ironman to the Princess. He leaves the house. Oyku wakes up and finds the note. She starts reading: Good morning my beautiful daughter, I couldn wake you up today because I had to leave early for work. We couldn’t talk last night because you didn’t want to talk. So, I decided to write you.

I know that lately you don’t want to talk to me, but I know you like to read. My princess, my life. I’m not as smart as you. I can’t express myself they way you do. I could never express all my love in writing because there aren’t enough paper and pencils in the world. All I can do is try to explain why I lied. That’s if you haven’t ripped up the letter yet. As much as I try, I ruin everything. I run around like a chicken without a head. Oyku thinks that sounds gross!

She continues reading: Oyku, my beautiful daughter, you are the best thing I have in life. You are my treasure. I’m scared of anything happening to you, of anyone upsetting you and of you getting hurt. That’s why I want to protect you from everything. But sometimes I destroy everything when I try to protect you.

Forgive me for the mistakes I have made. I’m growing and learning the same time as you. I don’t know another way. I always wanted to protect you from this battle. That’s why I lied. Not to fool you. Now I understand that this is your battle, not mine. I can’t fight your disease without hurting you. At this point, Oyku has tears streaming down her face. I’ll never leave you, Oyku. As long as you fight, I’ll be there. You’re right to want to know about your illness. You have to know so you can fight. If you want to talk to me tonight, I’ll tell you everything I know about your illness.

Hija #72 part 3

Demir wraps up his letter: Princess, you are the strongest person I’ve ever met. And you are going to win this battle. I’m sure because I know you. Now get up, wash your face, change your clothes, have breakfast and march onward!

Candan opens Oyku’s door. Your dad left early I’ll make breakfast. Oyku can’t stop smiling at Demir’s letter. She reads the last line: I’ll love you forever, your dad, Demir. She’s happy.

Demir is sweeping up at the restaurant. Kemal comes in and wants to know why he’s there so early. Demir tells Kemal he’s sorry about yesterday. Ugur had an emergency. Kemal doesn’t want to hear it and says that Ugur is untrustworthy.

On the way to school, Oyku tells Candan she doesn’t feel like going today. Everyone has seen the interview and they will stare at her. They sit. Candan says it’s true they will stare. It’s because I’m sick, I know. No, Candan says, it’s because you were on the TV. They will say, “there she is” the girl on TV. But after that they won’t be curious anymore. They will say, here is the strongest girl, the bravest girl and the prettiest girl. Do you mean it, Candan? Yes, everyone will admire your strength and beauty. So keep your head up. Let them stare and say what they want; don’t pay any attention. Oyku is feeling better now and they continue on to school.

Ihsan arrives at his office. Someone comes in with Oyku’s bone marrow analysis. They found a donor!

Candan drops Oyku off at the classroom door. She greets Sevgi. Sevgi says she spoke to the class they are not going to mention the interview. This is the cue for Ilayda to tell Oyku the TV makes her look fat. Oyku claps back… Ilayda, I hope you get to be on TV one day like me, so we can see if you look the way you want. A boy yells, out, score for Oyku! And the class bursts into laughter! Sevgi comes in. She asks, what’s so funny? Ok then, open your books…

Demir is working. He gets a call from Ihsan and hurries outside. We found a match! Demir is excited. What do we do now, Demir asks. I’ll call the donor and you can meet, ihsan says, then we will begin the necessary procedures. He tells Demir to be there at 9 am. See you then.

Demir’s first impulse is to call Ugur. He stops, thinks and calls Candan instead. We found a donor! Great! Demir asks her not to tell Oyku, he wants to surprise her. Ok, see you later. Demir is feeling relieved! He runs back into the restaurant where he is confronted by Kemal. Kemal wants to know why Demir took a break without telling him. Demir shouts, my daughter is getting better! We found a donor! Kemal and the others congratulate Demir on the great news. Demir yells out, tea for everyone, my treat! Kemal will add coffees to that!

Ugur is lamenting his mother’s absence. He can’t even find a clean shirt. (boy, has his mom spoiled him!) He finds a shirt that “doesn’t smell so bad”. (I hate to think about his underwear!) He goes to make coffee but drops the jar; it breaks and spills coffee all over the floor. His pity party continues; he can’t even make coffee. He gets a text from Sevgi. I’m about to get out, see you at our café? Ugur only has a 20 in his pocket. He says that he doesn’t even deserve Sevgi. He has nothing to offer her.

Candan goes to pick up Oyku from school. She sees Sevgi and tells her the good news. Oyku comes and Sevgi wants them to tell her now but Candan says Demir wants to surprise her later. Sevgi almost blows it when she says she’s meeting Ugur and will tell him the good news. She’s sure Demir has already done that. Oyku questions but they play it off as something about work.

Hija #72 part 4

Ugur is waiting for Sevgi at the café. Congratulations, she says to Ugur. What? They found a donor! Didn’t Demir call you? No, he hasn’t yet. Ugur says, thank God. Sevgi notices something is wrong and asks Ugur if he is ok. What is it? You haven’t said a word. He has to tell her something but doesn’t know how.

He starts, Sevgi… we have to break up. I can’t do this. Please don’t be angry or sad. This is not your fault, it’s mine. I don’t deserve you. You deserve so much better. I’m sorry I wasted your time. She starts to cry. Please don’t cry, he says. She gathers her stuff and quickly walks away. He calls after her, Sevgi.. Sevgi… Ugur asks for the check. He thinks it's too expensive, but grudgingly plunks his last 20 down on the table.

Candan and Oyku arrive home. Demir calls from the restaurant. You didn’t tell her yet, did you? No, we are waiting for you. Kemal overhears and lets Demir go home early to tell Oyku. Demir is reluctant to leave and he also has to go to the hospital tomorrow morning. Kemal insists. He will have his nephew fill in for Demir. Get out before I have to kick you out. Tell Oyku that I’m happy for her and that I said hello! Demir thanks Kemal by saying he didn’t know good people still existed. Kemal claims to be the last one!

Candan is helping Oyku with her Math homework. Sevgi calls Candan; she sobs, Ugur broke up with me! We were having coffee and he broke up with me. Candan wants to know where she is. She’s just walking around. Why don’t you come over, she tells Sevgi. Sevgi doesn’t want Oyku to see her like this. Demir arrives so Candan tells Sevgi she will meet her. Candan takes Demir aside and she tells him she has to go out. It’s something urgent. Demir is concerned. Candan tells him Ugur broke up with Sevgi. Demir doesn’t understand why Ugur would do this. Anyway, Candan want to go meet with Sevgi. Of course, go, says Demir. Candan leaves.

Demir asks Oyku if he can sit with her. He mentions the letter. Did you read it? She tells him no. Maybe it fell, he says and gets up to go look. Oyku stops him. She smiles and says she’s kidding. She read the letter. Are you trying to fool me, asks Demir. You fooled me many times, says Oyku. A low blow, says Demir. Oyku tells him to go ahead, he can talk, she’s listening. Demir asks, Do you really want me to tell you everything? She shakes her head and says, yes.

And we are out.

dondi356, ¡lo hiciste otra vez! Another superb recap. I'm astonished that you were able to capture what seems to be the entire lovely note that Demir left for Oyku. I was really happy to be able to "hear" it again. He claims he's not able to express himself well in writing, but his note contradicts him with every word. And thanks also for translating what was written on the board. I got only as far as "Demir" and "Oyku" :-).

I loved your asides in dealing with Ugur and his lack of clean clothes. You're so right about his mother spoiling him.

I'm still wondering how the killing of Demir's father is going to play out. I think it's highly unlikely that Ugur will turn out to be as culpable as it now appears. Why would Cemal have had to beat Ahmed if the version Ahmed finally gave Demir was true?

Of course, I also wonder who the bone marrow donor will turn out to be. My guess is that it will either be someone Demir is unhappy about (Cemal? Mu-RAT?) or it will turn out to be Ugur, and that will repair their friendship (though I'm still hoping that their friendship will be repaired because Ugur turns out not to have been responsible for Demir's father's death).

I'm not sure how much we'll learn tonight, but I'll do the recap.

Thank you so much, dondi356! I am utterly amazed at how much dialogue you can get in...and it is very appreciated. And Like Juanita, I am very impressed that you managed to capture everything in Demir's letter.

Ugur's first scenes were so depressive; poor man has finally come to the realization that he is nothing without Demir. I really didn't think he would jump even if those two young men hadn't interrupted. I just don't think Ugur has it in him.

Juanita, I too keep wondering about the night of the killing. I'm getting a little frustrated that they just don't clear up what really happened that night. Ugur sounds very convincing that Ahmed either did not tell the entire truth or just plain lied to Demir. I guess we'll just have to wait some more.

My bet is on Ugur being the donor; it almost has to be if Demir is to allow him back in his life...unless Ugur finds a way for the truth to be revealed and he did not shoot Demir's dad.

Hija

Thank you very much, Juanita and Rgv Chick. I take notes on my laptop while I watch, in my own kind of shorthand. I try to capture as much dialog as I can. Then I go back to revise and proof. When there is something critical like Demir’s letter or a big pivotal revelation, I usually go back to watch the scene again for accuracy.

I’m with you, Juanita. I was impressed by Demir’s letter. Of course Oyku would forgive him.

Ugur has hit rock bottom. The guilt and shame are too much for him. I like your analysis, Rgv Chick, Ugur thinks he’s nothing without Demir. I now doubt that Ugur killed Demir’s dad and I hope the truth is revealed soon. I fear that Ahmed is an evil slime who will cause a lot of trouble for Ugur, Demir and Cemal before this is resolved.

I keep thinking about the mess that Mufide will come home to.

Interesting you mentioned Mu-RAT as a donor, Juanita. I never considered that possibility. I wonder if the creep even gave a blood sample. He likely thinks he’s done more than enough by covering costs. As for the donor, I do think it is someone we all know. I keep going back and forth between Ugur and Cemal.

dondi356

hija

Another stellar recap, dondi! I enjoyed your description of how you manage to get all that terrific dialog into your re-telling.

I'm wondering whether this is a Turkish style or whether Spanish language novelas use letters as much for plot advancement. There have been several in this novela: Oyku finds out who her father is from Zeynep's letter. Demir reads how worried Oyku is from a diary entry. Cemal reads that he's Oyku's father in a diary entry written by Asu.

There's still a chance that the donor could be Asu, but I believe, like the rest of you, that it's most likely either Cemal or Ugur. I'm hoping it's Ugur.

Donating bone marrow sounds pretty simple, the internet tells me. You can go home the day of the donation.

I had high hopes Ilayda had changed. No such luck. But she needs to realize that the whole class is on Oyku's side. This is not the first time they've sided with Oyku. I remember they all voted for Oyku to be Snow White.

Like everyone else, I really, really want the truth about the night Demir's father died to be shown.

Hija

ah novelera, was it "Al otro lado del muro" where they tricked the boy into donating his marrow and they stuck a giant needle in his butt and into a bone to extract it, it didn't look like fun at all.

hija

Deb, I don't remember that at all! And I had to even look up the novela. "Otro Lado" reminded me also of La Casa del Lado.

Todo por mi hija - #73 - p 1 de 3

We get the rewind of Oyku's pretending she didn't see any note that Demir left for her. She then admits she's fooling him. It's only fair, she tells him, since he fools her a lot. Demir asks her to forgive him. "I should have told you about your illness before, but I couldn't. I thought I could protect you better if I did't tell you. Or perhaps I thought if I didn't tell you, I could ignore it. I know that's ridiculous." He promises that from now on, things will be different. Oyku then surprises him by saying that she's happy that she's sick. Demir looks very puzzled. Oyku explains, "If I weren't sick, and if my aunt didn't leave, I wouldn't have packed my bag and gone looking for you. I wouldn't have met you." Demir tells her that her illness has fulfilled its purpose, and now she'll get better.

In the morning, Demir the Iron Man (with an iron pot on his head) carries Oyku the Warrior Princess around the room. She tells hm she likes being the Warrior Princess rather than sitting around in her room waiting for her prince. Demir then tells her that they'll do a bone marow transplant. Demir will know more after he talks to Dr. Ihsan, and then he'll tell Oyku. "King Demir and the Warrior Princess until the end." They bump fists.

Candan and Sevgi are at a cafe. Sevgi is crying. Candan asks why Ugur broke up with her. Sevgi says she doesn't know. Candan asks whether they should ask Sra. Mufide, but Sevgi says she doesn't want to worry her. She tells Candan that Ugur said that he's not worthy of her, that she deserves better.Sevgi thinks this is ridiculous. They leave the cafe and continue the conversation. Sevgi reports "he said I was wasting time with him, and it's his fault. Why would he say this?" Candan is mystified. She tells Sevgi that she told Demir she'd find another place, and what did he say? "Whatever you want." Candan and Sevgi agree that they don't really understand men. Candan says, "Perhaps we're buiding castles in the sky." Sevgi doesn't think so. She says her father had warned her not to trust Ugur, but she didn't listen to him.

Cemal is at a cafe playing cards with three other people. Ahmed enters the cafe and sits at a nearby table. Ahmed tells Cemal that the two of them have unfinished business. Cemal tells him, "I have no business with snitches." Everyone laughs at Ahmed. Cemal says he's tired and has to leave. He has something important to do tomorrow morning. (Immediately, I suspect he's the donor.) Cemal leaves. Ahmed leaves soon afterward.

Demir is lying in bed with Oyku. He asks her whether she'd like to go on a father/daughter vacation, just a short one, 2 days. They could go camping, look at the stars, swim in the sea. Oyku suddenly looks troubled. "I don't know how to swim. I never went on a vacation with my aunt, so I never learned." Demir is excited: "I'll teach you how to swim!" Now Oyku is excited. She wants her transplant as soon as possible. The two of them hug tightly.

Candan is talking to Sevgi on the phone. Demir hears her, and when the call ends, he asks Candan how Sevgi is. Candan says that Sevgi is very unhappy. She and Ugur went for coffee, and he told her he wanted to break up. He said it was his fault, he doesn't deserve her. She wasn't expecting it. She's asking herself did she do something wrong, or make a mistake, or whether there's something she could have done. Candan continues, "Two people who love each other shouldn't split up for no reason." Demir replies, "Ugur must have had his reasons. Something must have happened. People don't break up for no reason."

Todo por mi hija - #73 - p 2 de 4

In the morning, we see Demir with an iron pot on his head carrying Oyku around the room with a paper crown on her head. Iron Man and the Warrior Princess. Demir is very excited about his upcoming meeting with the donor. He says he's too excited to eat.

Cemal is in his apartment. He goes to the door and is confronted by three men, who attack him. One of the three is Ahmed, who is carrying a gun. He hits Cemal on the head with it, knocking him out.

Demir arrives at Dr. Ihsan's office. "He'll be here soon," Dr. Ihsan tells him. "It's a man?" asks Demir. Yes. "What's his name?" "I'll introduce you when he gets here,"

Cemal is no longer in his apartment. He's in some location Ahmed has chosen, and he's tied to a chair. He asks Ahmed what he's doing. Ahmed replies, "Showing you who's boss." Cemal tells him, "I have something very important to do. I'll be back in two or three days and you can take your revenge then." Ahmed laughs in his face. "You shouldn't have messed with me," he tells Cemal. Cemal tells him he has no problem with Ahmed, his problem is with Ahmed's brother. "If he'd just told me the truth right away, I wouldn't have come to you."

Demir is getting more and more nervous. The donor has not shown up. Dr. Ihsan calls, but he gets a recording that the person cannot be located. The phone has been turned off.

Oyku tells Mercan that they've found a donor. He's very happy for her. Ilayda comes over and asks, "Are you scared?" "No, why?" replies Oyku. "Because of your surgery." Ilayda tells her that she had surgery, and I'm expecting her to make it sound horrific. To my surprise, she says, "I had my tonsils out. But I felt nothing. Don't worry. It's nothing." She then joins her friends who are waiting for her. Oyku has a knowing smile on her face. I think she recognizes the change in Ilayda.

Demir asks Dr. Ihsan to tell him who the donor is. He's desperate to convince the man to go through with it. Dr. Ihsan says that it would not be ethical. He can't tell Demir who it is. As he says this, he pushes the file on his desk closer to Demir. He tells Demir he has to go treat a patient on the second floor. He pushes the file even closer to Demir. He then goes out of the office, leaving the file prominently on his desk. As soon as Dr. Ihsan has left, Demir picks up the file. The donor is Cemal. Demir rushes out.

Demir approaches Cemal's apartment building. He sees Candan and asks whether she has seen Cemal, he's the donor. The two of them go up to Cemal's apartment. Demir bangs on the door. He's sure that Cemal is inside. He tells Candan, "Cemal's a psychopath. He's playing with me." Finally, convinced that Cemal is not in his apartment, Demir rushes off. He goes to the cafe where Cemal often is. Ugur is there. Demir tries to ignore him, but finally he tells him that he has to find Cemal. Cemal is the donor. Ugur suggests they look together. Demir tells him he doesn't need Ugur's help. Ugur points out that two people looking are better than one.

Candan comes to pick Oyku up from school. Oyku asks why Demir didn't come. Candan tells her that Demir had to work, but he said to tell you that he'll tell you everything this evening. Oyku takes out a large picture she drew and shows Candan. There's a hospital (thanks, Google!) and a man with a heart next to him. Oyku drew it for the man who is the donor. Candan asks how she knows it's a man. "I have a feeling," says Oyku.

Todo por mi hija - #73 - p 3 de 4

Cemal is still tied up. Ahmed is pacing back and forth, waiting for someone. His brother Faik arrives. Ahmed greets him by punching him in the face. And then a second punch. "You caused me problems," he growls at Faik. "You told Cemal everything. He came and beat me until I spoke." Faik doesn't see what the problem is. Ahmed explains, "I killed that man. I could go to jail. Get out of here. I don't want to kill my brother." He then has a flashback to The Event. The guard, Demir's father, is lying on the floor with a bloody wound on his head. We see Ugur with a gun in his hand. But this time we also see Ahmed with a gun in his hand. I found the scene somewhat confusing, since Ahmed then gives Ugur his gun and tells him to take care of the guard. But isn't the guard already dead? At any rate, Ugur takes the gun but can't bring himself to shoot it. Ahmed then tells him, well, your prints are on the gun, so if you say anything to anyone, you're the one who will be in trouble.

I'm even more confused by the scene that follow. I've always thought Cemal was reasonably bright, but the scene that follows seems to reveal that he is either incredibly stupid or eager to die. He tells Ahmed, "You killed Demir's father. I heard you talk to Faik. Now I know the truth. You won't get away with this." (He's tied up and is saying this to someone who doesn't like him and has already killed one person???) Ahmed tells him to shut up, but instead, Cemal continues: "You better be sure I don't get out of here alive." Not surprisingly, Ahmed says, "What a shame, Cemal. You leave me no choice."

Demir and Ugur have been searching unsuccessfully for Cemal. Ugur suggests going to Cemal's apartment. Perhaps he has now returned there. They do so, and Demir again pounds fruitlessly on the door. Ugur takes something out of his pocket and picks the apartment door lock. They enter and immediately see that it's a total wreck. Demir is also a total wreck. "I can't lose my daughter," he says in despair. Ugur assures him they'll find Ahmed. He then has a flashback to Ahmed's helping to throw him out of the cafe onto the street. Ahmed is upset that everyone is mocking him. Back in the present, Ugur asks Demir, "What if Cemal is the victim this time?" They decide they have to find Ahmed. They go to a cafe, but a guy there says he doesn't know where he is, but they should ask Ahmed's brother, Faik. He comes here just about every day. And bingo! Faik appears at the door of the cafe. However, he spots Demir and Ugur and immediately flees. Demir and Ugur give chase and catch him.

"Where is Cemal?" they demand to know. Faik claims he knows nothing. Ugur tells him, "Your brother kidnapped Cemal." Faik says he has no idea, he hasn't seen his brother in a while. Demir is furious. He hits Faik and threatens to kill him. Faik then admits, "Ahmed kidnapped Cemal, and what are you going to do about it? Do you think I would put my brother at risk? I'm saying nothing." Demir grabs him around the neck. "My daughter is going to die because of you!" he shouts. He starts to choke Faik. Faik's phone rings. Ahmed is calling. Demir tells Faik to answer, but if he says anything wrong, Demir will kill him right there. Faik answers the phone. Ahmed asks him where he is. At a cafeteria. Ahmed tells him, "Come over here. We have a large problem. We have to bury someone." The call ends. Faik tells Demir and Ugur that Cemal was alive when he saw him. Cemal tells him, "If you don't tell me where he is, I'll kill you right now."

Todo por mi hija - #73 - p 4 de 4

Oyku is doing her homework. She's worried about Demir. He should have been home by now. Candan tells her he probably has to work late. Oyku asks her to call. Candan tells her that if he's at work, he may not answer. Oyku thinks he'll answer and asks her to call. Candan calls. There's no answer.

Cemal and Ugur are watching the place where Ahmed is. One guy walks outside. They wonder how many others are there. Demir is hoping that Cemal is still alive. We won't know until tomorrow, since the episode ends here.

hija

Oops. The last sentence in part 3 of my recap erroneously begins "Cemal tells him..." It should begin "Demir tells him..."

hija

Oy. I clearly was too tired by the end of my recap. In addition to the error I have already pointed out, I've found another, very similar error in part 4. The final paragraph should begin "Demir and Ugur..."

Hija

Fabulous recap, Juanita. It was very helpful to me. Thanks so much. No need for correction.

Good ol’ Dr. Ihsan did not keep us waiting! It’s Cemal!

And thank goodness we got clarification on Demir’s father. I agree the flashback to the robbery was a bit confusing. I understood it as Ahmed deliberately made Ugur put his prints on the murder weapon to blackmail him to keep quiet. Young Ugur was so upset by what happened it would have been very easy for the police to get him to squeal. Demir just needs to forgive Ugur for hiding the truth.

When Candan told Demir about the Ugur/Sevgi break up, it seemed as if she was fishing, relating it to the suspected Demir/Ugur fallout. “Two people who love each other shouldn’t split up for no reason.” And by the look on Demir’s face, Candan knows something is up.

I couldn’t understand why Cemal told Ahmed what he overheard either. Brave or stupid? Demir, Ugur and Cemal have all shown flashes of intelligence and stupidity. In Demir’s and Ugur’s case, usually one is there to compensate for the other.

Looks like the three guys will become great friends again.

Terrific recap, Juanita! Don't apologize for any missteps. I've seen my own mistakes many, many times the next day after a recap posted.

Dondi, it's interesting that you thought Candan was hinting that people who love each other...meant Ugur and Demir. I thought she might have been hinting about she and Demir.

That Ahmed is a rotten, rotten guy. IIRC Ugur had a gun, but Ahmed took it from him and put the one he, Ahmed, had used to kill Demir's father into Ugur's limp and shell shocked hand. It's a shame Ugur didn't man up about this a long time ago.

I have no doubt our two guys, maybe one brain, will find Cemal in time.

hija

Thanks very much, dondi356 and novelera, for your insightful and forgiving comments.

Yes, dondi356, like you I'm very relieved that we've finally got the whole story about what Ugur did and did not do that night. One thing that surprised and somewhat confused me about that scene was Ugur's immediately taking off his gloves. I don't think I saw/heard Ahmed tell him to do so. I can understand why Ahmed would want him to do so, but why would Ugur take off his gloves unasked? Or did I miss something?

As for Cemal, there's no question in my mind as to whether he was brave or stupid. Stupid overwhelmingly wins my vote.

novelera, I too thought Candan was hinting about herself and Demir when she was talking about when two people are in love, though I can see how it could also apply to Demir and Ugur, as dondi356 has suggested. And I loved your statement, "I have no doubt our two guys, maybe one brain, will find Cemal in time."

Hija

novelera, I think you are likely right about Candan hinting about herself and Demir. If this is the case, I don't know why she just doesn't come out and tell him she loves him. Or tell him she wants to give a real relationship a chance. I initially was thinking she was after something he was hiding from her and worried he would get into trouble.

I'll do the recap tonight.

dondi356

Hija

I’m very late to this party but wanted to make sure I thanked you, Juanita. The recap was splendid and your oopsies were practically insignificant.

I just want to say that I was amazed at how we were thinking so much alike during that scene with Cemal being so STUPID! Those blows to his head and face must have loosened some screws.

Oh and I lost my bet that Ugurvwas the donor. Oh well, Cemal was the second choice and a pretty good one. I suppose this is headed for a happy reunion of the three stooges...errr, buddies.

hija

You're always VERY welcome at the party, Rgv Chick, no matter when you arrive.

I really like your explanation for Cemal's stupidty--the loosened screws caused by those blows to his head and face. One mystery solved, so many more to go!

The more I think about it, the more I'm glad that Cemal rather than Ugur is the donor. Ugur has been such a good friend to Demir for so long--I wouldn't want to think that Demir will go back to being a close friend because Ugur donated bone marrow. Ugur doesn't need an additional reason to win back Demir's friendship. He just needs the truth to come out. Cemal, on the other hand, has been an SOB toward Demir ever since he got out of prison. Cemal could use some good deeds to put up against things like his trying several times to set up Demir and Ugur to be arrested, and of course his kidnapping Oyku. Being a donor might finally bring Demir, Ugur, and Cemal back together.

Hija #74 part 1

Slight rewind. Oyku and Candan wonder why Demir isn’t home yet. Demir and Ugur are scoping out Ahmed’s hideout.

Demir gets a call from Candan. It’s Oyku using her phone. She asks, when are you coming home? I miss you. When will your boss let you come home? Besides, you were supposed to tell me what Dr. Ihsan said. Demir lies to her, I’ll be home late. The boss asked me to help him with some furniture. We had to wait until all the customers were gone to start. He tells her she will be asleep by the time he gets home. I promise I will tell you everything Dr. Ihsan told me tomorrow morning, says Demir.

Demir turns to Ugur and says, let’s finish this quickly. May God help us. Let’s hope they did nothing to Cemal.

Oyku asks Candan if she knows when the surgery will happen. In a few days, says Candan. The hospital will let us know and we need to be ready for when it happens. Oyku asks if they will put her to sleep. Don’t worry Oyku, Candan tells her, you have the best doctors in the best hospital in Turkey. You will start to feel better and you will realize you have beaten your illness. Don’t be afraid. Oyku says she’s not afraid. Now its time to brush your teeth and go to bed.

The guys catch a glimpse of Cemal being walked somewhere in the building. He’s alive! Thank God. Demir tells Ugur to go to the back of the building and see if there is an entrance. Then call me, Demir says, and the rest will go as planned.

Candan reads to Oyku in bed. Once Oyku falls asleep, Candan leaves.

Ugur goes around to the back of the building. He texts Demir: I found an entrance. Demir texts back: ok, on my way.

Oyku starts dreaming. She calls out for her father. She’s on the operating table. Dad, I’m scared. Demir tells her you don’t have to be afraid. This will be fast. Oyku asks, where is Dr. Ihsan? He will be here soon. Dad, are we going on vacation and we will get to swim? Yes, whatever you want after the surgery. Just then, Ihsan appears in his business suit. He says, we won’t be able to perform the surgery. Come with me and I’ll explain. Oyku cries out, dad don’t leave me! Dad please don’t leave me alone!

Candan wakes Oyku from her bad dream. She tells Candan, I want to see my dad, where is he? Candan says your dad has left work. He will be here soon. Think nice thoughts so you can sleep. Oyku relates her dream. I couldn’t have my surgery, she says, I didn’t get better and my dad left me alone. Candan tells her your dad would never leave you, you know that. Everything will be alright. Candan gets in bed with her. Candan is worried now, too.

Ugur picks the lock on the back entrance. Demir walks up to the guards at the front. He talks to the guys about a car parked there. This is great--I’ve got a car like this, Demir says, but I can’t get it to run. Cemal hears Demir’s voice.

Demir continues to talk to the guys about the car. Meanwhile, Ugur has managed to open the back entrance. Demir tells the guys, I’d love to hear the engine roar. One of the guys obliges and guns the engine. While Demir occupies the guards, Ugur sneaks in and unties Cemal. Who would have thought I’d get to save you, Ugur tells him.

Ahmed appears, wondering what’s going on and recognizes Demir. He also spots Ugur and Cemal. A fight ensues. Ahmed pulls a gun on Cemal and Demir disarms him and knocks him to the ground. Ugur gets into the driver’s seat of the car. Demir looks at Ahmed and flashes on a couple of things: Ugur telling him that Ahmed killed his father and Oyku asking him to promise not to fight, steal or get in trouble. He snaps back and tells Cemal, let’s go!

dondi356

Hija #74 part 2

Just as Demir and Cemal are about to get in the car, Ahmed gets up, points his gun and yells, Cemal! They both turn to face Ahmed. Cemal pushes Demir into the car. Ahmed shoots Cemal.

Our guys manage to get away but Cemal looks like he’s in bad shape. Cemal passes out and Demir keeps calling his name. They arrive at the hospital emergency (Acil) and Cemal is taken in.

Gunshot victim in critical condition! Cemal is taken right into surgery. The guys have to wait outside. Demir yells, don’t die Cemal! You can’t die! You need to live for my daughter. Do it for Oyku.

Candan is pacing; she calls Demir, it goes to voice mail.

Demir is pacing back and forth. Ugur asks, are you ok buddy? Demir gets angry, stop calling me buddy! It’s your fault we’re in trouble with Ahmed! If anything happens to Cemal, I swear I’ll kill you. Cemal is my daughter’s only hope. Ugur is very sorry. Demir begs for Cemal to hang on.

Meanwhile, things are not going very well in the operating room. Someone says, we’re losing him.

The police show up, along with Mu-RAT. Mu-RAT asks, what happened? You brought in a gunshot victim? Demir says it was an accident. Mu-RAT tells him to give his statement to the police and then come to see him in his office. Ugur quietly asks Demir, what are we going to tell the police? Demir says, the truth. Ugur is unsure about that. He thinks Ahmed will come after them. Demir doesn’t care about Ahmed and they still don’t even know if Cemal is still alive. They go with the police.

Faik is looking for Ahmed in another part of town. He finds him in an abandoned building. Ahmed tells Faik he shot Cemal. Faik asks if Cemal is dead. Ahmed doesn’t know but Demir and Ugur saw him shoot. It’s over if they tell the police. He tells Faik to find a good place to hide and come back to get him.

Demir tells the cops he saw what happened with his own eyes. We stopped to look at a car. Coincidentally we saw my friend get shot and we brought him to the hospital.

Demir goes to see Mu-RAT. Mu-RAT asks if he gave his statement. Yes. He asks Demir, ok, what really happened? Mu-RAT is looking at Demir’s bloody hands and clothes. Demir is silent. Mu-RAT assaults him with outrageous questioning: You’re not going to say anything? I came here for nothing? What have you gotten yourself into? Are you in the Mafia? (that one gets a little reaction from Demir) Mu-RAT continues, the guy was shot. Why were you with him? Is this why I’m financing Oyku’s treatment? How do I know you didn’t shoot him? Demir finally speaks, don’t be ridiculous! That man is Oyku’s donor. They shot him and I rescued him! I told this to the police.

The Rat is worried that the hospital’s image will suffer. Demir yells, why are you bringing this up? Should I have given up my daughter’s only chance to live? I should let him die so your brand doesn’t suffer, Mu-RAT? Ok, calm down, says Mu-RAT, I understand you are angry. But The Rat thinks Demir should try to understand him, too, and he says, let’s talk later. Demir agrees and leaves. (Don’t know how Demir resisted belting him but I’m glad he did)

Ugur tells Demir he gave his statement. No news on Cemal yet. Ugur assures Demir that Cemal is a fighter, he won’t give up so easily.

Surgery is still going on. They can’t stop the bleeding and they have already used 5 units of blood.

Faik takes Ahmed to a safe house. Ahmed complains about staying in this pigsty. Ahmed is worried; Faik had heard Demir and Ugur told the police everything. Faik says don’t worry, at least Cemal isn’t dead. For now, says Ahmed.

Candan is sleeping on the couch. Oyku wakes up and she wakes up Candan. Why did you sleep here, she asks? Oh, I fell asleep. Your dad was really busy last night. He should be on his way now. Go wash your face, she tells Oyku. Candan tries calling Demir again. No answer.

Hija #74 part 3

Oyku and Candan make breakfast. Oyku asks Candan, how many days will I be in the hospital? I’m going to miss school. Not a problem, says Candan, Sevgi will help you and the doctors will give you a medical excuse. Oyku mentions about Ilayda getting her tonsils out. She said they made her sleep and then it was over. Candan says the same will happen for you. Oyku tells Candan, the warrior princess isn’t afraid of anything. That’s the spirit!

Demir and Ugur are still at the hospital. Ugur suggests that Demir go home and he will stay. Go see Oyku. What will I tell Oyku? How do I tell her? She’s waiting for news about the transplant.

The surgeon comes out along with Ihsan. Cemal is in critical condition. He’s in the ICU with a serious injury to his intestine. There is a possibility of an infection and he has lost a lot of blood. So, will he get better, asks Demir. What about the transplant? Ihsan says there is nothing left to do now but wait. Demir states, he has to live.

Ihsan realizes this is hard for Demir and, honestly, he is worried, too. But we need to be strong, he tells Demir. We need to be patient. Trust us, says Ihsan. Getting upset won’t do anyone good, including Oyku. We will keep you notified.

Ugur will stay at the hospital and will call Demir if there is news. Demir realizes he still has Cemal’s blood on his hands and clothes.

At breakfast, Oyku is asking for her father again. Demir arrives home to a bunch of questions from Oyku. Where have you been? Your boss didn’t let you leave? Didn’t you sleep? Demir wants to change his clothes but Oyku stops him. What did Dr. Ihsan say? Who is my donor? Tell me.

Demir asks if he can change first. He hides his bloody clothes and comes back out. Oyku asks him when is my transplant? Well… I was finally able to meet the donor. Oyku is very excited; she wants to know all about him. You know him already, says Demir. It’s Cemal. Cemal?

Oyku flashes back to some of the vile things that Cemal said to her. Oyku is upset. He’s a bad man, she tells Demir. He tried to come between us. He forced me to choose Asu. Yes, that’s right, but he volunteered to help us now. He’s done some bad things but he’s not a bad person. He wants to change. Demir asks for Oyku’s trust. Ok I’ll trust you dad.

Oyku is ready to pack for the hospital but Demir calls her back. We have to wait a bit longer. Why? Cemal had an accident and he’s in the hospital. We have to wait until he gets better. Oyku accuses Demir of lying. She figures Cemal doesn’t want to donate his bone marrow. He wants to hurt them again. Demir assures Oyku he was telling the truth. Oyku isn’t buying it. She goes to her room and closes the door. Demir enters her room. He tells Oyku to get up and come with him, so she can see the truth with her own eyes.

Demir takes her to the hospital and she sees Cemal through the ICU window. Will he get better, she asks? Demir doesn’t know. Dr. Ihsan said we need to be patient. What happened to him? An accident. Will he get better? Yes, he was the strongest one when we were kids. He was never sick. Don’t worry, he will get better.

Oyku speaks to Cemal from the window. You did really bad things to us. You tried to separate us. You lied to us. But it doesn’t matter. I hope you get better. I don’t say it just for me. I really want you to get better. I hope we can be friends like Ugur and me are. We will have ice cream and go to the park.

dondi356

Hija #74 part 4

Candan asks Ugur what happened. Ugur claims not to know much. Candan can’t believe this; didn’t they bring Cemal to the hospital? Yes, but the thing is when we got there… he is interrupted by Oyku and Demir. Time for Oyku to go to school. Demir reminds Oyku they are the iron man and the warrior princess. Now they are fighting time. Demir tells her, I know it’s boring, but it’s almost done. We have to wait for Cemal to get better. Now go to school. Candan takes her to school.

Ugur tells Demir to go to work. He will stay and call if anything changes.

Sevgi is doing a Math lesson. Who has the answer? Everyone raises their hands. Sevgi calls on Mercan but he is not raising his hand to answer. He wants to know why Oyku isn’t there. The kids laugh. Ilayda tells him Oyku is making him lose his mind. Sevgi says Oyku is on her way and calls Ilayda up to the board.

Ugur is at the ICU window. He flashes back to when he met Cemal. Demir goes to the restroom and Ugur and Cemal sit. I heard you just left the orphanage, says Ugur. Demir has told me a lot about you. He said you have been friends since you were kids. Yes, we grew up together, Cemal says. He’s like my brother from another mother. I love him more than I would a blood brother. If anyone ever messes with him, I’ll be there. I’ll beat up anyone who hurts him.

Oyku arrives to class. Sevgi asks Candan if everything is alright. No, it isn’t. They step outside the classroom. Candan tells her that Cemal, Oyku’s donor, was shot last night. Demir and Ugur saved him. Candan doesn’t know much else. She tells Sevgi that Oyku is feeling a bit down.

Then the bell rings for recess. Ilayda tells Oyku, did you wait outside until class was over? This sounds more like playful teasing, not the usual Ilayda nastiness. Sevgi asks Oyku if she will go out to play. She doesn’t feel like it. Mercan asks her to go out. When he pushes it, she yells at him to leave her alone. He leaves her.

Candan is in her clinic and The Rat shows up. She asks him if something has happened. Unfortunately, he tells her. Oyku is ok, so what is this about? This isn’t about Oyku, it’s about her father, The Rat says. Oh, Mu-RAT, not this again… Candan, they arrived last night with a man with a gunshot wound! They were covered in blood. What does this matter, asks Candan? Mu-RAT tells her, Demir’s dark life has been dragging us down. He is worried. She tries to get a word in… Mu-RAT…. He asks her to listen for once without interrupting. How can you defend this man? How do we know Demir didn’t shoot that man? What are you saying, asks Candan, why would he do that? Cemal is Oyku’s donor.

What if he decided not to be the donor and Demir lost control and shot him? Isn’t it possible? Candan thinks this is not possible. Mu-RAT keeps trying. You know that man can’t control his anger. (I wish this Rat could control his arrogance and idiocy) Those people are criminals; they were in prison! What are you doing with them?

Every time Mu-RAT thinks about it, he loses his mind. (!) He continues, then there is the thing with the hospital. If the press finds out, I’ll be ruined. An exasperated Candan asks Mu-RAT, what do you want from me? Mu-RAT wants her to listen to reason. She doesn’t need Demir anymore to take care of Oyku. You got her out of the orphanage. What are you waiting for to get divorced?

And we are out.

dondi356

dondi356, muy buen hecho!! Bravo to you for churning these out week after week, very impressive!

Before I start with last night's episode--

Juanita, I'm in awe of your comment regarding why it was best that Ugur not be the donor, very insightful and point well taken!

And dondi356, "I don't know why she (Candan) just doesn't come out and tell him she loves him. Or tell him she wants to give a real relationship a chance." I have been waiting for this for such a long time! She is expecting Demir to "know" how she feels when she has done nothing to give him hopes. She is always telling him that everything she does is because of Oyku; and then she started going out with the RAT! What does she expect Demir to do...read her mind??? I really don't blame Demir for being cold toward her.

Ok back to last night--

I'm just glad it wasn't Demir who got shot; that would have been so devastating for Oyku. And of course, the writers have to prolong the suspense.

Watching Oyku talk to Cemal from the window was quite touching. I was hoping that there would be some indication that Cemal was at least feeling her presence.

I don't understand why Ugur just doesn't tell Demir the truth. What is he waiting for?

Mu-RAT continues to be a dirty RAT, just looking at him gives me the heepbie-jeebies. Candan just needs to cut him off...with the biggest blade she can find.

hija

Thanks very much, dondi356, for your wonderfully complete and detailed recap. It helps to explain something that puzzled me. When I saw the bad guys walk with their prisoner, Cemal, I thought they were taking him away, perhaps to kill him. I didn't understand why Demir and Ugur didn't immediately try to follow them. But in your recap, you say Cemal was being taken to another location in the building. That really helped me.

Wow, two picked locks in one night. Ugur apparently has a real talent!

Actually, the person whose talent most impresses me in this novela, including last night, is Demir. I've been astonished at how well and how fast he thinks on his feet, coming up with just the right explanation/excuse for just about every situation, be it his improvising about the car and wanting to hear the engine roar, to the many small lies he has told Oyku, not to mention the wonderful note he left on her pillow in the previous episode and his decision to take Oyku to the hospital to see that Cemal is really badly wounded.

I'm also impressed with Demir's growing self-control. In last night's episode, he remembers Ugur's telling him that Ahmed killed Demir's father. In the past, that would almost surely have led him to try to kill Ahmed, but this time he also recalls Oyku's wish that he not lie or steal or get into trouble. He passes up the opportunity to harm Ahmed. And later, as you also show so well in your recap, Mu-RAT treats Demir with utter contempt and hurls insult after insult at him. Demir is furious, but again he controls himself.

There's one thing Demir does in last night's episode that I hope doesn't come back to hurt him. He takes off his bloodstained shirt and hides it under the mattress. Perhaps I've just watched too many crime shows, but I kept thinking that if the police come to suspect him, they might come to look for evidence, and one of the first places they're likely to look is under the mattress. True, he can simply explain that Cemal bled all over him as they took him to the hospital, but (I can hear the police asking) why then did he feel the need to hide the shirt? Just a thought I had last night while watching the episode.

hija

Rgv Chick, thanks very much for your appreciative remark about my earlier comment!

I was struck by some of the remarks you made in your response to dondi's recap. I kept wanting to say "Yes, yes!" Perhaps especially to what you say about the lack of communication between Demir and Candan. Both of them have a longstanding and very puzzling reluctance to say what they feel for/to each other. Even though I'm a woman, I find myself understanding Demir's reluctance more than Candan's. Though Demir has many talents, he suffers from a lack of self-confidence and a tendency to blame himself when something goes wrong, even when it's not his fault. Also (as Mu-RAT is constantly stressing), Demir really is from a much lower social class than Candan. I think all of this combines to make him VERY reluctant to express his feelings to her. And, of course, Candan's reminding him that theirs is just a marriage of convenience and that it's not working well for her must also help to explain Demir's reticence.

I'm less sure of what's holding Candan back. She seems to have been somewhat open about her feelings for Demir when talking to Sevgi. Has she been brought up to believe that the man should make the first move? Seems unlikely, but possible. Is she still somewhat uncertain about Demir as a life partner, given his background, his lack of self-control, his future prospects to earn an honest living? I'm really not sure. I do think/hope that if either she or Demir would open up, the other would respond well.

And speaking of reticence, I agree strongly that Ugur should just tell Demir the truth.

Finally, I loved your final suggestion--that Candan should just cut Mu-RAT off "with the biggest blade she can find"! Amen!

Hija

Great comments and analyses, Rvg Chick and Juanita! Especially like what you both have to say about the Demir/Candan relationship.

IIRC, Demir did make a declaration of love to Candan. He was on the run from the police (I forget why) and he showed up at her clinic. A romantic moment, a missed opportunity for Candan and a big frustration for us viewers. Later, he had to retract his declaration. It was a condition for the oft mentioned “marriage of convenience”.

I can’t blame Demir for this either. Why would he take another chance only to be shot down again? He’s waiting for a signal from Candan. One would think Candan was raised in a convent.

I think Ugur has tried to tell Demir the truth. Demir was not ready to listen. When Cemal wakes, I’m sure he will let Demir know it was Ahmed, not Ugur. Will Demir want revenge? Anyway, Ahmed will probably not let this go. He’s going to make more trouble for the three old friends.

Where is the anvil for Mu-RAT?

Dondi, tomahawk dunk! OK, I've been maybe watching too much basketball. What a terrific recap!

I'm late to the party and my new page is already up. But I wanted to express my thanks to both you and Juanita for all the fine recaps.

Everyone has been so eloquent in response to dondi's recap that there is not too much to add.

I do agree that Candan is frustrating. Sometimes she just gets that blank look on her beautiful face, and I feel like screaming. And we probably can't hope she'll tell The Rat what Viewerville would like to say to him. First, it's not in her. And second she would not want to risk his spiteful withdrawal of Oyku's care. Although...he wouldn't dare do that because of the free publicity he got from the television interview.
