Also- ugh, Exaltón again?
Happy New Year, everyone!
Slight rewind to Mu-RAT and Candan at the clinic.
What are you waiting for to get divorced? She responds, I have to think about Oyku’s emotional stability. What about yours, Mu-RAT asks? No answer. He backs off a bit and says, I didn’t come her to make you feel uncomfortable but reconsider. You are not part of that world. I’m only saying this because I worry about you. I’m just trying to warn you. At least think about it. The Rat leaves.
Demir is at the restaurant. He serves two customers. The woman ordered pasta bolognese (yum!). She calls Demir back. It has carrots, and she can’t eat it this way. (good grief, doesn’t this woman know what’s in bolognese? So why did she order it? I could have a whole discussion here on bolognese) Demir tells her the dish is always made this way. The man with her gets nasty with Demir. He says what are you waiting for, change it! Why are you standing there? What?
Kemal overhears and runs right over to the table. Demir, what’s going on? The man says this waiter was rude to us. Kemal jumps on Demir, too. Take your apron off and get out of here. Demir stutters, what?... but…. Kemal repeats himself, take off your apron and leave. Demir goes out. Kemal apologizes to the customers and follows Demir out.
Kemal stops Demir from leaving. Demir explains that man was rude but he realizes he shouldn’t have answered that way. He understands why Kemal would want to fire him. Kemal says he hasn’t fired Demir. He only wanted the customers to think he did. Kemal’s been in the business a long time and he’s dealt with all kinds of customers. Demir tells Kemal, you are a very good person, but you don’t have to keep me because you feel sorry for me. Kemal wouldn’t do that, but he will fire Demir if he doesn’t control himself.
Kemal asks Demir to sit. He tells Demir he has two sons in college. When they were little, one of them had a fever and he had to take him to the hospital. He was so afraid. Luckily, he was better the next day. But that one night was enough to make me lose my mind, Kemal says. He still gets goosebumps when he thinks about it. Kemal can’t imagine what Demir has been through all this time.
He advises Demir to keep a cool head. Don’t act and talk however you want. This is the hardest part of being a parent. Any little thing you do could affect your daughter. Live with that in mind. Kemal says, go apologize to those people. That’s how this job is. Show your humble side even if they are wrong. Demir apologizes to the customers but that man is still rude and says Demir should know his place.
Candan picks up Oyku from school. Betul is there to pick up Mercan. Oyku and Mercan are not speaking to one another. As they walk away, Candan asks Oyku, are you upset? Are you mad at Mercan? No answer. Do you want to go to the book store with me, Candan asks? I have to get a book and you can get one, too. And we can have a nice dessert there. Oyku’s all for it.
At the bookstore, Oyku spots her favorite book, “The Little Prince”. She picks a book called “Life is Short and Elephants Fly”. Candan thinks it’s a nice book. Then she goes back for “The Little Prince”. Don’t you have that, asks Candan? It doesn’t matter, says Oyku. They pick tiramisu for dessert. (is this Italian cuisine day?)
Candan, can I have another slice after this, asks Oyku. No, if your dad finds out you ate this before dinner, he will make a fuss. We won’t tell him, says Oyku, it will be a girl’s secret. It’s a deal, says Candan, you only live once. It’s nice to do this now and again.
dondi356
Oyku has a question, do you think I’ll make it? Of course you will…. What kind of question is that? What if Cemal doesn’t get better, she asks Candan? Candan thinks Cemal will be fine. Oyku asks, how do you know? Candan doesn’t know but that’s what she believes. Everything will be ok. Oyku tells her if I get better… I mean when I get better, I’m going on vacation with my dad. Great! Oyku asks if Candan would go with them. Of course she will.
Next question: So before we go, will you and dad make up? Candan says, your dad and I are not fighting. Oyku doesn’t want Candan to lie to her. I know you are both upset, she says. You are fighting because of me. What makes you think that? Oyku isn’t sure, but her dad gets uspet because he knows she is sick. Candan assures Oyku that what is happening has nothing to do with her. So are you going to make up with my dad? Yes. Candan explains that people who love each other, hurt each other sometimes, but then it’s fine. Don’t worry, let’s eat.
Sevgi goes to her other teaching assignment with hearing impaired children. She speaks with the director. Her first day was good. The director is happy to have her as a volunteer and she explains about the kids and the special program at the school.
Ugur is keeping vigil at the hospital and he has fallen asleep in a chair. A nurse wakes him. He mumbles, Sevgi? The nurse asks him to sit up. He gets a call from Mufide. She’s checking to see how he is. She’s tells Ugur she is staying longer for someone’s henna night (ritual celebration for a woman before her wedding). Ugur is not happy and wants her to come home. He really misses her. (I assumed it’s because he doesn’t have any clean clothes left)
Ugur speaks with the nurse. He asks if someone could call him if there is any change in Cemal Eroz’s condition. He left his number and he will come back if anything changes. She agrees. Ugur leaves.
We see Sevgi with her students. Seems to me she hasn’t had much training to work with the deaf and hearing impaired.
Ugur is on the bus. He falls asleep and dreams that Sevgi is telling him to wake up. He starts repeating her name in his sleep….Sevgi….Sevgi…. He wakes up and the elderly lady next to him is staring at him. He says God help me, every time I close my eyes, I see Sevgi. The lady asks him if he’s ok. No, he’s not ok. It’s the worst that could happen. He’s heartbroken. The woman is sorry to hear it. He calls Sevgi while she’s in class. She sees it’s Ugur and puts her phone away. Uugr tells the lady, she won’t even answer my call.
Candan and Oyku walk home. Oyku hears a meow. It is coming from under the hood of a car. Ay, he’s stuck inside! They bang on the hood. The owner comes around the corner and wants to know why they are hitting his car. Sir can you open the hood? There’s a cat stuck inside. Don’t waste my time, he says. Oyku talks him into it, please help us save him. The man opens the hood. There he is! He went down by the wheel! Oyku picks him up and hands him to Candan. The poor thing is scared. He’s so sweet. They thank the man and leave with the kitten.
Candan tells Oyku she saved the cat’s life. Oyku asks if they can take him home. That’s fine with Candan, but what will Demir say? Oyku thinks Demir will agree to it because he loves all animals. (I don’t think so) Ok then, says Candan, he can stay the night. We will feed him and let him rest a bit and then I will give him his shots. Oyku says, he’s lucky! (BTW, what happened to Candan’s dog, Gece? Did I miss something? And what about her horse, Şimşek?)
Ugur is home. He looks at a pic of Sevgi on his phone. He’s sad. What have I done? I don’t know how can I live without Sevgi. He stares at the pic.
Back to the Sevgi’s class. She looks at the children’s drawings. She helps one student who gives her a hug.

Later, Ugur walks over to Sevgi’s apartment building. He calls her again. No answer. He texts her: I’m at your door, can we talk? She comes out. Why are you here, she asks? I came because I wanted to see you. I miss you. You miss me? You broke up with me! Ugur says, the way I acted was stupid. I thought it would be better for you if I stayed away. Now I realize I can’t live without seeing you. I can’t go on. Is that all, she asks? Yes. Goodbye, Ugur. He stops her from walking away. She says, Ugur you broke my heart and I never want to see your face again. She goes.
The restaurant is closing. Demir is leaving. Kemal asks the chef to pack some pudding for Oyku. Demir thanks him.
Oyku is carrying her new kitty around, who she has named Lucky. (Suertudo in Spanish, Şanslı in Turkish) Candan tells her to let the cat eat and go wash up for dinner. Candan also warns her not to get too attached before Demir sees him. Demir comes home and sees the cat. What is he doing here? Oyku explains what happened. Can he stay with us? The answer is no (is this a surprise?) But dad…. Demir says, we already feed the cats outside; we don’t need one inside.
Oyku tries but Demir is not giving in. He will shed. He can’t stay. Candan jumps into the conversation saying, his shots are up to date. You two had it planned out, accuses Demir. You didn’t ask me. You don’t care what I think. Candan says not to make a big deal. Demir’s not budging. Candan keeps trying. No is no, he says. We see sad eyes from Oyku and Candan. Maybe Demir is softening? He asks, what is his name? Lucky. Ok, just for tonight, Demir says. Dad….please. Demir is standing firm on this.
He tries to bribe Oyku with the pudding. Look, I brought dessert. Oyku isn’t interested; she already had dessert earlier with Candan. Demir is annoyed. He says fine, the cat can stay, you already had dessert, you planned everything, and no one asked me. Candan pipes up, I live here, too, and I also have a say in decisions. Demir asks Oyku to go to her room and close the door. He has to talk with Candan. She takes Lucky with her.
Demir starts, Candan, do you think you can do whenever you want? What are you trying to say, Demir? He responds, you always decide on your own and do what you want. You come and go as you please. You go to dinner with whomever you want and come home whenever you want. What other decision do you make, he asks her.
Candan says he is being rude. Stop making a big fuss. Just come out and say it and don’t use the cat as an excuse. Demir turns to leave. Candan says, fine go. Let’s just drop the conversation once again. Demir asks her, do you want me to stay here and fight about Mu-RAT? Do I need to explain that in exchange for my daughter’s life, he is taking the woman that I love? Is that what you want to hear? Candan is dumbstruck. We have to wait through a commercial break to hear her answer. (Candan, please don’t waste this chance!)
Candan stands up and faces Demir. Do you know what I don’t want? What? I don’t want a divorce! Demir looks shocked. But then she clarifies, at least not now. We should stay together for Oyku. Demir asks, and what about you? What do you feel? Stupid Candan throws the opportunity away saying, it doesn’t matter how I feel right now. Demir leaves.
dondi356
Oyku comes out of her room. Did dad leave? Did you fight? Yes, something like that. Oyku says that her dad loves Candan very much, since first he saw her. Candan doesn’t want to talk about it right now. Why? Because I’m just a kid? But it’s not like I don’t understand, she tells Candan. My dad loves you a lot. I don’t think you remember how he treated me in the beginning. He doesn’t know how to put the love he feels into words. What can we do? That’s how he is. Then there’ s Mr. Mu-RAT. He really ticks him off. (us, too) Ok, Candan has listened enough and thanks Oyku. She understands what she is saying. She wants Oyku to go wash up for dinner.
Demri goes to the hospital ICU and looks at Cemal. Ugur shows up. Demir is annoyed. He thought Ugur was going to stay and tells him, I trusted you to wait when I shouldn’t have. Ugur says he went home to change clothes.
Demir says, do you remember when Cemal saved you from falling off a roof? Yes, Ugur says, do you remember he saved you from that girl’s brothers? Yes. Ugur sighs and says, Sevgi doesn’t love me. Demir says, Candan doesn’t love me either. Ugur grabs Demir’s arm and suggests they drown their sorrows with some drinks. Demir gets upset. What are you doing? We’re not friends anymore. Ugur wants Demir to let that go. Demir doesn’t want to. He says their friendship is over. Disappear for good. Demir leaves.
Ugur flashes back. Demir and Ugur were angry with each other. This was the end of their friendship! They had been fighting over something that happened during a soccer game. Cemal has been sitting between the two. Why are you fighting like little girls, he asks. He tells them, who cares if we lose? He puts his arms around them both and says, you two are brothers. Shake hands. Peace is made. In the present, Ugur says, get well Cemal. You have to pull through.
Demir comes home. Everyone is in bed. He sees Lucky on the couch. Just what he needed. (Yes, Demir, you need this. Animals are healers.) He sits on the couch as Lucky continues his cute kitten antics. He talks to Lucky. You can’t stay. Lucky comes closer to Demir. Don’t even try, he says, you are not scoring any points, Lucky. If it were up to Candan and Oyku they’d kick me out and let you stay. You’re out! That’s my final word. (how’d they get that kitty to behave like that? He's a scene stealer!)
Next morning, we see Demir sleeping on the couch with Lucky in his arms. Oyku and Candan come out and are laughing. Demir wakes and asks, why are you staring at me? Demir is horrified to see Lucky curled up in his arms. He jumps up and claims, I wasn’t sleeping with him. He snuck in!
Ugur is sleeping again at the hospital. This time Ihsan wakes him. Is Cemal okay, Ugur asks? It’s better if you see for yourself, says Ihsan and Ugur goes with him.
Faik brings food to Ahmed’s hideout. Ahmed pulls a gun on him. You should announce yourself, he says, I could have killed you. Faik says, the police are still looking for you. Faik says let me talk to those guys, maybe they will change their statements. (I thought Demir and Ugur didn’t mention Ahmed.) Ahmed wants Faik to stay out of it. He will handle it. He asks Faik if he brought what he wanted. It’s a phone.
At breakfast, Oyku and Candan are still laughing at Demir sleeping with Lucky. Demir says being cute won’t help Lucky. Demir is feeling itchy, did the cat bring fleas into the house? No, Candan checked him. Demir is also annoyed by the constant meowing. Meow, meow, mocks Demir. Demir says he had to feed him to get him to shut up. Is that so?
Demir gets a call from Ugur. He goes into the bedroom and shuts the door. Ugur, is there news about Cemal? What is it? Something has happened, says Ugur.
And we are out! Ultimas semanas were announced!
dondi356
What a wonderful recap, dondi356! I'm especially glad you included so many delightful asides.
Kemal is turning out to be the father/advisor Demir never really had. The advice he gives Demir is exactly what he needs, and Kemal's kindness is also endearing. Indeed, it's one of the novela's few bright spots right now.
So what's up with Oyku and Mercan? Did I fall asleep and miss something? Did I stay awake and miss something?
Loved your aside about Ugur missing his mother because he has no clean clothes. He probably doesn't have much to eat, either. Washing clothes and cooking food are not among his talents, which seem primarily to include sleeping deeply, picking locks, and being a loyal friend to Demir.
I agree that Sevgi doesn't seem to have had any training in teaching the deaf and hard of hearing. Then again, I didn't see much evidence of that disability among the students, either. In fact, I keep wondering how this figures in the novela's plot. So far, we've simply seen Sevgi interact warmly and well with the students, which we've already seen in her teaching her regular class.
Good question about Oyku's dog and her horse! I wonder whether the answers are on the cutting room floor (perhaps along with a fight between Oyku and Mercan?).
Yes, Candan really blew it! I was yelling at her through my TV screen, but she apparently didn't hear me. :-(
And, for that matter, Ugur really blew it as well, again not explaining to Demir what really happened the night Demir's father was killed.
In a previous episode, we saw Sevgi and Candan commiserating with each other over the men they love who apparently don't love them. And now we have the other side of the coin: Ugur and Demir bemoaning the fact that Sevgi and Candan don't love them. Nice symmetry.
dondi356, mil gracias! I really look forward to reading your recaps, so much detail and dialogue that I sometimes miss so again, many thanks!
Juanita, can I just copy and paste your entire comment?
I really enjoy watching Kemal; he can be strict, but is very understanding and caring. Demir is very lucky to have a job with him; he didn't only get a wonderful employer, he got a wise father figure who will hopefully keep steering him in the right direction.
I also agree about Sevgi lacking training...and that those kids had no hint of an auditory impairment...Mehhh, we have better things to keep us talking, let's move on :-)
In regards to Oyku and Mercan, I think the writers were just tryin to show how upset and worried Oyku was about not getting her transplant...even Mercan suffered from that backlash...ok, we got; now let them be best buds again :-)
I was SO frustrated with Candan. What the heck is she waiting for? Demir just confirmed that he loves her and she did NOTHING! Ughhhh! Someone please shake some sense into her!
Thanks, Juanita and Rgv Chick!
Like we saw in Ugur’s flashback, it’s going to take Cemal to change Demir’s mind about Ugur. Cemal can’t die.
Demir lucked out with the job at Kemal’s. Ugur blew this, too.
I think Rgv Chick is right about Oyku and Mercan. Liked how Betul and Candan gave each other knowing looks. This rift won’t last long.
Juanita, I will accept “cutting room floor” as a euphemism for what might have happened to Candan’s animals.
Maybe the deaf and hearing impaired scenes were for Turkish PSA reasons.
Gotta love a 9 year old girl giving solid relationship advice to a grown woman. Listen to Oyku, Candan!
