La desalmada, #51, Thursday, "A decent proposal"

Fernand is comforting Rafa, by saying that in her eyes he is the best man in the world, she sometimes feels like she doesn’t deserve him. (Only sometimes, asks the Patio?) Love and kisses. Fern adds he shouldn’t be sad and Juana agrees and says that life goes on. He’s smart and hardworking, that’s all he needs. Rafa kisses Fern again and jokingly tries to kiss Juana before he leaves. Fern tells Juana she’s happy they won’t depend on something coming from El Primor, that place is tainted by the blood of the people who went against Octavio. That’s what Cesar said. Juana thinks she should stop listening to that guy.

Martina is having lunch with the priest (where has he been until now??), asks him to investigate Clara and her years with the nuns. She’s very interested in everything dark in her past.

Lety asks Rigo to take Rafa’s stuff to Fern’s ranch in the truck he left behind, but do it on the hush hush, Octavio doesn’t have to know. Julia arrives after and doesn’t look happy with the way Rigo is gaining power at the ranch now that Carmelo is gone. Lety is more interested in Isa, is she doing OK? Yeah, for sure, she’s even back to work on the site projects.  (Yeah, riiight!) Lety asks Julia if maybe they could come up with some activity to do together. Julia assures Lety that she does have something that she’s working on, it’s a life project that could bring her mucho dinero on the long term. (Wink, wink!)

Cesar accepts a job with Luis. Fern will try to find him something better paid with a rancher, but this will do for now. Some drunks arrive, asking for Flor, thinking they are at the bordello. Cesar punches them and throws them out. One of them ruffles Rosalina a bit, she’s happy Cesar is here to defend them, drunks always come at the restaurnat asking for Flor (must be nearby, what a fine family neighbor this is).

Rigo has come with a truck full of luggage, Rafa’s stuff. Rafa would rather not accept it, he’s afraid if he finds out his father might turn on Rigo, too. Rigo says no worries, wants to be there for Rafa, he’s so happy for him, how nice to be loved like this. Would Isa love you poor, too? Rafa, ever the blind fool, is sure that she would! Rigo also gives him something special from Lety, something he can’t refuse.

In the next scene he says goodbye, and Fern arrives asking about Rigo. They haven’t been introduced yet, Rafa tells her that he brought him his stuff from the house. Fern thinks his mother could help him talk to his father. Even if she’s OK with him leaving El Primor, he needs to reach out to his father, prove that he’s the sensible one. Rafa is impressed, she’s such an angel, especially after the bad way Octavio has treated her. He needs to leave, he’s having lunch with Lety. And he’s also planning to talk to the bank, ask for a loan for Nuevo Amanecer. Fern is scared because the ranch already is indebted. But Rafa reassures her, he’s taking the loan in his name, there will be no danger for the ranch.

Octavio asks Martina if she’s dealing with the toxic waste issue. Martina asks him for time and not to pressure her. He threatens her, she looks disgusted, threatens him back.

Lety and Rafa have lunch together in town. She thinks things will get better between Octavio and him as time goes on, but Rafa is too disappointed by his behavior.

Isa has a huge headache, Angela remembers it’s not her first hangover. They talk about Rigo, who loves her and wants to be better for her. But Isa can’t deal with being poor, even as Angela insists that Rigo is the best man in the world. Isa leaves, German overheard the whole conversation and Angela confirms that Isa loves Rigo. German realized that Angela also loves him. Angela denies it at first, then asks him to keep this to himself, especially since Rigo only loves Isa. German promises to keep this a secret and Angela says she’ll go back to Mexico when she’s done with work. Angela thinks time will heal her wounds.

Martina tells Antonio that the priest is investigating Clara. Antonio asks her to keep David in the dark about this for now. They also talk about Octavio and how many stupid things he’s doing at the company, not obeying the Inspectors’ demands. How are they supposed to help him then? Martina is amused, Octavio will see what it is to have her as an enemy.

Octavio argues with Lety about the stuff she sent their son. He thinks Rafa should learn about independency the hard way, Lety insists she will never abandon her son. Octavio almost gets violent, Lety reminds him that she herself chose him years ago. Octavio says that he truly loved her, while Fern is only using Rafa. Lety can’t be sure of that, they need time to figure it out. Octavio says he’ll ask Fern to sign a prenup. Lety thinks this is offensive, what would have been his reaction if her father had asked this of him? Octavio repeats what a hard worker he’s always been, so Lety again reminds him that this was exactly what she used to tell her father about him. Octavio is actually lost for words for a bit, then accuses Lety of being too romantic and naïve. Yeah, maybe, but she will help her son as much as she can with or without his approval.

Miriam and Juana talk about Candela and Piero getting close. They go to his room, just as Mari comes to visit. Rosalina tells her that Piero’s involved with Candelas, so she follows Miriam and Juana inside. They knock on the door, Piero is with his camera and Candela is half naked on the bed, so he asks them to wait. Juana breaks the door open, Mari sees Candela naked and runs away. Miriam realizes they were just working on Piero’s class project.

Mari is upset, thinks Piero is with Candela because she’s too young and naïve. He tries to explain, she won’t hear of it.

Octavio is upset with Rigo, too, he says he was only following orders. Lety could have used someone less trustworthy, so it was better to ask him. Octavio agrees, wants to make sure Rafa knew he still doesn’t approve. This is what he deserves, is he not tired of living in that dingy ranch? Rigo says Rafa looked rather well, committed to helping out at Nuevo Amanecer. He doesn’t want to give up, just like his father. He even dares to suggest that the fighting needs to stop, so Octavio asks him to leave.

Rafa is back at the ranch and very upset, he didn’t get the loan. His father intervened at the bank, he’s shocked by such cruelty. Fern pretends to be shocked, too (she knows better, though) comforts him.

Lety and Julia talk about Octavio, she can’t believe how strict he’s being. If it ever comes up, could Julia tell him to make peace with Rafa? (Look at Lety, even suggesting pillow talk ideas) Sure, Julia says. And she changed her mind about the divorce. For now. Lety thinks she should give her marriage another chance. Julia says that time will tell if that’s possible.

Rigo visits Isa at the window with her favorite chocolate. Don’t worry about money, I’ll get some. He tells her there is a guy who wants to buy a ranch and he’ll counsel him. Isa doesn’t seem impressed, he swears he will get the money she needs…

Fern talks to Juana about Octavio being so upset with Rafa, she didn’t see it coming. Juana is optimistic, they will be OK. Fern thinks it’s her fault, Juana says that Rafa knew what he was getting himself into. (No, he does not!) After all it’s better if they stop talking to him completely. Fern lets it slip that this was not the plan and Juana realizes she’s planning something. Yeah, Fern decides she needs to talk to Octavio.

Juana thinks she’s crazy, Octavio won’t do anything against Rafa, but he will against her. He could even try to kill her if Rafa is not there, Lety might even help him if she’s as evil as Fern believes. Cesar overhears and agrees with Juana, Fern can’t put herself in that kind of danger. Juana’s surprised to see Cesar work in the restaurant, he says he can go with Fern confront Octavio, Juana says they both need to stay put. Juana realizes Fern got him the job with Luis.

Rafa is back at El Primor, barges into the office without knocking. Octavio asks him if he forgot how to behave, Rafa asks if maybe his father forgot where he came from. Why does he treat him like an enemy, since he forced him to choose and he doesn’t even know Fern. Octavio says he has the life experience to know these things, Rafa spent all his life in school, always calling him to solve his problems with money. Rafa thinks this is not the way to open his eyes to the reality,  he will only disappoint him more. He might not even be able to forgive him. Ever! “This won’t cost you money, but my love and respect.” Rafa storms out, leaving Octavio actually shaken.

Rigo and Mari talk about his love for Isa. He thinks Piero loves Mari just as much, they need to talk. Mari mentions Angela, Rigo says she’s only a friend. Rigo has to go, gives her a brotherly kiss, tell the others he had a belly ache and went to sleep. Piero comes just then, Rigo warns him to behave. Piero came to take her to Fern’s official proposal party (or whatever that’s supposed to be). Mari thinks Panchita won’t let her go, Piero insists this is an important moment for his family. She still says no.

Juana wants to take her ukulele to the party, Rafa thinks she should leave it home so she can have fun with them. Juana mentions how bad he looks, he’s upset with his father. She asks him to forget about that man, pretend he’s a newborn, someone who gets to start from zero at her ranch, just like all the other people she accepted at Nuevo Amanecer. Rafa takes advantage of this opportunity to ask Juana how Fern ended up there. Juana says it was something very sad, but Fern has to be the one to tell him. All she can say is that when her dad died, she sold everything to start over here. Fern arrives, looking very nice (and appropriate, not too much cleavage, it shows that Rafa didn’t help her with this makeover).

Rigo is up to no good. He meets Isidoro and some masked men on a field. Isidoro gives him a gun, Rigo didn’t think he’ll need one. Isidoro is right in pointing out this is no child play and Rigo is such an idiot to get himself involved in this, I can’t even.

The plan is to steal some cattle from a ranch. During the thing Isidoro is shot, Rigo helps him on his own horse. He thinks they should take him to a hospital, but the others threaten him with guns, telling him they need to leave Isidoro behind.

Miriam is teaching Cesar how to be a waiter. Ha, Rafa will be happy to see him, was nobody else available? Cesar tells Miriam he can’t believe Fern can love a Toscano.

Just then the party arrives and Rafa is surprised to see Cesar, thinks Luis invited him. Miriam explains he’s working there, they need the help. Rafa kisses Fern again in front of Cesar, just to mark his territory, Cesar congratulates Fern for the engagement and Luis takes Rafa to the cellar to show him his booze (again). Fern thanks Miriam for covering for her, Rafa can’t find out she asked Luis to give Cesar a job. Miriam says no worries, this is a night for celebration. Have some tequila!

Later, during dinner on the terrace, Fern makes a speech, thanking everyone for being there. They are her family. Rafa thanks them, too and Juana makes a joke about nobody at the table being able to give them marital advice, because they’re all single. Then Rafa says David is here with him, standing by his side instead of his absent parents, and David stands up to officially ask Luis, Juana and Miriam for Fern’s hand in marriage.

Luis says that Rafa helped Fern see the light and he thanks him for this, Rafa calls Fern a hurricane that barged into his life and turned it upside down. She’s so strong, courageous etc etc... And he takes out a ring, it belonged to his grandma and to his mother when they got married, this is proof of his mother’s blessing. (Also, it’s her very twisted way to send that blessing, since she met with Rafa for lunch and actually had Rigo send the ring in the morning with the other stuff. Oh, well)

The scene is actually quite nice, everyone is touched, Fern’s eyes are moist, good thing nobody is looking at Cesar, who’s watching them from afar, in silent rage.

Alone, Fern and Rafa talk about the ring. He agreed to accept it because that’s his mother acceptance of their relationship, she now knows Lety's a good woman.  They hug, Fern is happy to have Lety’s approval. Rafa is hurt his father is still being difficult. Fern mentions how much she misses her own father and they kiss, while Piero takes some pictures and the others clap. Then Luis makes a toast, too, mentioning that dreams are worth fighting for. Like the one he and Miriam had when they started their restaurant; Piero intervenes, asking Fern and Rafa to do their best to actually be together forever, unlike his parents. He attacks his mom again about her lie. Miriam just calls his name, meaning NOT now, child! and he has the decency to shut up. David asks Clara if she wants a proposal like this, too, but she doesn’t care about being married, she only wants to be with him forever.

Inside the restaurant, Candela is upset they haven’t even been included, while Miriam pretends to be Fern’s mother. Rosalina is upset, too, she wishes she could leave, but her father won’t take her back. And she loves Luis so much (barf).

Juana thinks Fern should tell Rafa the truth, or at least that she’s a widow and her husband was killed. Fern is afraid, she plans on talking to Rafa  when they start the papers for their wedding, but he’ll want to know the details. Octavio could even kill Rafa if he found out. But the day will come when she will tell the whole truth.

Mateo comes by the restaurant, chats with Cesar. Then he sees Fern, the fact that she’s marrying Rafa changes things. He knows she’s a good woman, but soon enough she’ll be on the other side. Fern tries to say that Rafa and Octavio aren’t even in speaking terms right now, but Mateo points out that blood is thicker than water and soon enough she will be one of them, too.

Cesar thinks Mateo might be right, but Fern won’t back down, even if she loses the small ranchers’ support. Cesar reminds her that nobody needs to know their plan, Fern can’t wait for everyone to know the truth about Octavio and realize she never betrayed them. Cesar gets emotional, thanks Fern for her effort, in memory of his daughter and wife. He grabs her hand just as Rafa walks in to witness it. He goes ballistic, pushes Cesar aside. “Why is this guy holding your hand?”

Comments:
Adriana Noel, thanks a million for your recap. Someday I'll be able to stay awake and not catnap through the show, but until then these recaps are lifesavers.

Martina is interesting, but not in a nice way. A lot like Octavio.

I know that Piero is doing these shoots for his photography class, but he must be enjoying himself besides. Too bad his girlfriend had to show up.

Mari really is cute, but yeah, she is naive to a fault, and she should trust Piero a little more.

In this show of idiots, too many to count, Rigo manages to become Idiot #1. It's no wonder I fall asleep from time to time.

Now he's a cattle rustler? Oh, man. I hope he doesn't get hurt, but if he manages to save Isidoro, Isidoro will owe him one.

Andy

Adriana: Good Job on the recap of last night's episode. As always Gullible Rafa always blows things out of proportion OMG.

Andy: How badly does Buji Martina want to expose Clara's past ? Why does she hate her so much ?

Steve Boudreaux

Adriana Noel, just sensational. Your detailing flowed so smoothy and you captured all the details perfectly.

“…pretend he’s a newborn, someone who gets to start from zero at her ranch, just like all the other people she accepted at Nuevo Amanecer”... – just one of many reasons I love Juana.

I loved the celebratory engagement dinner, true friends reveling in Rafa and Fernanda’s happiness. If only Fernanda’s intentions weren’t tainted…

Martina goes straight to the source – the omniscient local priest to ferret out Clara’s past. “Martina is amused, Octavio will see what it is to have her as an enemy”. I don’t doubt it for a moment.

My heart caught a bit reading “… how nice to be loved like this”. I can’t help but like Rigo and do feel for him. Andy, I had the same thought as you in that Rigo might dodge a bullet (so to speak) if he does save Isi’s life.

“Fern talks to Juana about Octavio being so upset with Rafa, she didn’t see it coming”. Sigh.

I wonder what it is like to live in Lety world, with a light film covering your lens of understanding, catching flashes of reality but never seeing things as they truly are.

Adriana Noel, thank you! This was grand.

Diana

AdrianaNoel: Thanks again. I really enjoyed reading this one. ITA with many of your observations. I must admit that Rafa's jealous rages are getting on my last nerve! We never saw that with Isa, that's for sure! And, Leti sending over the ring and then meeting with Rafa -- sort of dopy, I agree.

Thanks, Adriana. Loved the title and recap. Yep, why didn't Lety give the ring to Rafa herself since they were going to lunch together? The writers slipped up on that one.

Last night's epi was a fun one for fashion. Fern pretty in hot pink, Juana gussied up and glowing, Lety classy in pearls and pastel, Julia in that strange white ruffled thing.

Rigo - now that he's done this idiot thing, I hope he's planning on buying a ranch with the money and leaving crime behind. I actually want Carmelo to find out about this and slap him silly.

Once again Thank you for the stellar recap

I love the vibe between Martina and Oct. I can easily see this leading to a great TV trope of hawt sweaty Hate Sex.

Well again I have to say as much as I hate Oct..he is right the young Prince is so unworldly. He has been handed the $ all his life.

Thank God, Ma gave up the ring or otherwise Rafe woulda had to come up with 20 pesos for another ring from a street vendor.

Rigo is sad because now he is a cattle rustler or horse, goat, sheep rustler. I don't know some kind of rustler.

Isa is blackmailing him..there will never be enough money.

I don't get the Piero pics. I mean years ago my cuz was an art major she was several years older me and she told how they sketched live nude models. My teen mind ran wild. So now if you do an on line course which is what I guess he is doing..isn't that a bit different than doing it in a class setting. I would think there could be all kinds of legal implications.

Fevered

Adriana, thank you! You captured everything so well. I would rather read your recap than watch the episode!

This show goes further and further off the rails all the time sometimes I enjoy it and sometimes I wonder just how high the writers were when they wrote this!

Jardinera, ' I must admit that Rafa's jealous rages are getting on my last nerve!' ITA I hate the whole jealousy storyline in any TN I worry that little girls are growing up thinking that throwing a fit like a jealous idiot is a sign of true love! Yuck

I really don't understand how Angie fell in love with Rigo. I can't remember if I have said this before or not, but even though he's probably basically a good guy all he has done around Angie is cry about Isa and use her as his beard, what is attractive about that?

I also don't understand why and how Juana expects Fernanda to just forgive and forget and live happily ever after! Is she supposed to accept Octavio as father in law and live in peace? I think I have said this before but to me this is crazier than anything Fernanda has done. Not saying Fern's plan is good either but Octavio remains a threat: to Fern, to everyone around her, to future children or grand children, neighbors, friends, etc etc etc. I wouldn't let that anywhere near my family for any reason....Juana just seems to want Fern to forget everything, get married and start giving BBO grandchildren to torment, insane!

Piero, Candy, Mari, and all that....yawn

Also Octavio already knows Fernanda is Santi's widow - and they have discussed this publicaly so Fern has nothing to gain by not telling Rafa. It's just ammunition for Octavio if he realizes he can use it to plant doubts in Rafa's head.

Ariana, this was excellent.

I can see Fernanda and Rafael being happy, but only if Octavio dies or they move a thousand kilometers away. However, I can't see her keeping that secret forever. Darcy, you are dead right.

You go, Juana! Kicking the door in was awesome. As far as the nude photography thing goes, I can't see what's wrong with it. Candela is a legal adult who consented, Piero would be sending this only to his prof, and one has to be able to trust someone in that position.

The priest should know Martina better. I am surprised that he isn't seeing through her. She has displayed some truly unhinged public behavior, so I am guessing that she is only protected by being married to Antonio. Does she know that he is a client at Flor's bordello? Would she even care?

I feel bad for Rigoberto. He is seriously deluded if he thinks there can ever be enough dinero to satisfy Isabela. She needs to peddle her wares in the right places in Mexico City and be a bigger whore than her mother.

Thanks, guys! This was a fun recap to write, I didn't expect the proposal to turn into such a big deal, it was truly a nice scene.

I don't find Rafa's jealousy so upsetting, maybe because Fernanda is hiding so many things from him. I believe that deep down he knows something is off, but he's too infatuated with her to realize it; if he was a bit more selfaware and a bit less dim (for lack of a better word), he'd figure it out. I do find it funny that he never suspected Isa, who cheated on him from day 1 and he actually believes that she's not after the money.

Adriana, Merci for a great recap with a great title . Thanks for using your writing skills to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse . I often think that the talented recappers here at caray could write a terrific telenovela.

I agree with all the interesting reactions and comments .

Rigo ...geez ...he stops crying in his beer to go cattle Rustling or whatever that was to get dinero to win Isa. wow...Who knew you could purchase true love ? Dumb bunny . I stopped feeling sorry for him a long time ago. All this anguish and tears over a spoiled girl who likes to bunny hop in the barn. I have no sympathy for dumb, randy, Rigo. Testosterone fueled Rigo is confusing bunnyhopping with love . NEXT....

I am wondering if wardrobe has taken Juana out of her flannel shirt and given her a hasty makeover so that Cesar takes notice and romance blossoms between them.

Thanks so much ADRIANA. I love your recaps and love how you join in to the discussion with your own reactions. So fun to watch this together.

Certainly agreed with this!

"Lety and Julia talk about Octavio, she can’t believe how strict he’s being. If it ever comes up, could Julia tell him to make peace with Rafa? (Look at Lety, even suggesting pillow talk ideas)"

Poor Lety, she will be crushed when she finally finds out it's her "best friend" that's betraying her with Octavio. Reminds me of that old blues song "Don't worry 'bout no strange woman, jes watch our for your own best friend". Amen!

I hate all the contrived jealous scenes. They're so weird and unnatural. Repetitive and annoying.

And Diana, I loved this:

"I wonder what it is like to live in Lety world, with a light film covering your lens of understanding, catching flashes of reality but never seeing things as they truly are. "

Sounds lovely, frankly. For as long as it lasts, Lety is happy. Hopefully she will find the inner resources to continue with her life, once that "light film" gets ripped apart. If Fernanda and Rafa produce some adorable grandchildren, that will help a lot. Every life has ups and downs but I'm in no hurry to see poor Lety run into a brick wall. Sigh. Because it sure does hurt.

Well, lots of fun reading ADRIANA'S recap and enjoying all the comments. Sunny and crisp here. Glorious Fall weather. Hoping you all have sunny skies wherever you are.

Still laughing over Julia's " life project" = roping and hogtying Big Bad . haha. As if.

Just a quick note to say I totally agree with those who are tired of the repetitive and contrived scenes of jealousy in this novela.

AND to note that Juana looked really good at the engagement party. It's about time César or somebody showed a little interest in her. All these other characters, with zero or less to offer, are doing better than she is. I know Macarrón would be jealous, but he'll get over it.

And I agree with Darcy, "I also don't understand why and how Juana expects Fernanda to just forgive and forget and live happily ever after! Is she supposed to accept Octavio as father in law and live in peace?"
Octavio killed Fern's husband, raped her, and stole their land, and later she finds out he has a pattern of doing this. Just make nice with the guy? I don't think so.

Let me be the first to point out that this TN can be rather silly at times.

Whoops! I am not the first! In fact we were warned before we even started watching it. I can only believe we are all gluttons for punishment.

:-)

Andy

Niecie: Getting the sense that Rigo's hustling will backfire on him sooner or later.
