So...to clarify, Nett is doing a recap tonight and I will do one tomorrow, Friday. We can decide if those days stay the same going forward. For Part 1 of Hercai I had Thursday night.

Herc

Thanks for the recap of ep 1, Juanita. Nice to have Hercai back. Now I'm following 5 Turkish dizis in total!

About the recap schedule, I can take Fridays again. That works best for me. Maybe we can resume the same schedule we had for season one? Don't want to pressure anyone else.

Fatmagül #13 part 1

Kerim is greeted at the airport by the rotten ricos and their handler, Munir. Did you come to make sure I was leaving, Kerim asks. No, we just came to say goodbye, Erdo replies. Munir gives Kerim a card for the place he will stay. Selim tells him, you’re free now. Erdo says let’s hope the same for us.

Munir says don’t worry about those at home. Erdo pipes up, Beykoz (the district in Istanbul where the family lives) is only 10 mins by boat from Küçüksu (where Erdo has his boat docked). Kerim is upset they know the family’s location. Erdo makes a crack, well if Fatmagül calls, I’ll have to go help. Kerim says, I’ll kill you. He makes a run on Erdo and starts choking him. Kerim startles awake. It was just a dream, he says. [not a good start to the trip]

Kerim goes through the check ins. Fatma wakes up and takes the envelope from under her pillow. She opens the bank book, then tears it up. Meryem cries as she looks at pictures. Kerim thinks he hears Fatma call his name. Fatma opens the letter. She reads it.

In the morning, Meryem is in the kitchen. She looks out the window and sees the shed door open. Could be trouble. She picks up a big branch and goes to investigate. She’s ready to strike the intruder and she gasps, Kerim! He hugs her. He couldn’t leave. Fatma hides to watch and listen.

Kerim tells Meryem he saw Fatmagül’s face everywhere. I was in a panic leaving her, he says. I should have gone but I couldn't. [Turkish] I think I love that girl. Now it’s Fatma’s turn to panic. [Turkish] Meryem says, she felt it but didn’t want to get up her hopes. She cries happy tears. She is glad Kerim didn’t go.

Kerim asks Meryem to forget what he just told her. Will he talk to Fatma? He can’t talk to her. She hates me, he says. The day that we couldn’t find Fatma I was so afraid I wouldn’t see her again. He thought she might do something to herself. When I found her, she was crying, he says, I wanted to hug her, wipe away all those tears she shed because of me. Then I learned those tears she cries are for Mustafa. I heard her tell you Mustafa was with another. She still loves him and hates me. How can I stand before her and say, ‘I love you’? But Kerim says he won’t leave her.

Muka finds the ripped up bank book in the trash and here we go…

Meryem tells Kerim, with love and patience, Fatma will get rid of her hatred. Don’t give up.

Kerim gets a call from Erdo. He hears Meryem in the background and realizes Kerim did not leave as planned. Erdo asks why and Kerim says he changed his mind. Kerim hangs up. Erdo worries.

Meryem tries to talk to Fatma but Muka sticks her nose in. When she leaves, Meryem says, he will tell you why he didn’t go. Listen to him.

Mustafa’s parents come to Istanbul. His mother’s health is worse. She’s getting tests done.

Kerim is in the kitchen while breakfast is prepared. Muka makes husband and wife cracks again and Fatma leaves the room. Kerim asks Rahmi if he wants to come with him to see a boat business. He’s up for it.

Fatma comes back and motions to Kerim to come outside to talk. She rips into him. Liar! Why are you still here?! He tells her that Meryem needs him. She thinks he’s playing a game. He says he hasn’t any bad intentions. I just want your wellbeing. He says he wrote her a letter. She shouts that she ripped it up and tossed it. She wants nothing from him, not even kindness.

He promises never to hurt her again. She shouts that everything about him is a lie. Probably that attorney letter was fake as well. Kerim assures her it’s real. I’ll divorce you, she says. Ok, then we can go together and do it, he replies. She yells, how can I trust you after all these lies?!

Kerim tells her he wanted to go but he couldn’t. I think he wants to tell her the real reason but is afraid to say it. She tells him to shut up, she doesn’t want to listen to anymore lies.

Fatmagul #13 part 2

Fatma goes inside and argues with Muka. She shouts at Muka, I’m getting a divorce! [Turkish] if you helped me instead of using my desperation… I could have a chance! Muka goes low, did you speak with Mustafa and he wants you back? Or is there another man you have been fooling around with? Fatma raises her hand to strike. Meryem stops her. The screaming women are separated and Meryem hustles Fatma out of the house.

If that’s not enough, Muka starts in with Kerim, too. You’re divorcing? And the bank book in the trash? He admits he started an account for Fatma. Muka says so you paid her to divorce? Kerim says if Fatma wants a divorce he will accept it. Kerim tells Rahmi lets go see that place now.

Fatma tells Meryem she wants to start school asap. And then get a job when she graduates. She needs money so she can be independent. Fatma mentions that Kerim lied to her. Meryem says he didn’t lie. He was going. He left you a letter, did you read it? Fatma says no and she asks Meryem, do you know what was in the letter? No, she doesn’t but says Fatma should give it more time to get to know Kerim. He’s not a bad person. [Turkish] The fire that burns you, burns him, too. Fatma says Meryem is on his side. Not true, she answers, I was on your side from the beginning. Fatma accuses Meryem of lying. Meryem says we are all scattered like leaves in the wind. Give it more time. Talk to Kerim.

Mustafa’s father tells him his mother not doing well. She misses him terribly. That’s part of the reason they came. Mustafa says he will find a doctor for her and spend more time with her.

The rotten ricos inform Munir and Resat that Kerim didn’t leave, and they don’t’ know why. They think of reasons Kerim would stay. Meryem? Needs money? Selim says, maybe he doesn’t want to leave the girl [bingo!] Selim says, just kidding. Erdo says he know where they live, he read it on the paperwork. Resat tells Munir to fix it.

The boat guy wants too much money so they need to think about it. Rahmi mentions the money Kerim had in the bank. Kerim tells him he gave that to Fatma and adds, don’t tell Meryem about the money. And Muka shouldn’t say anything either. Kerim says from now on, he’s going to use his own money to build his business.

Fatma asks Meryem about the morning she found her on the beach. Was it Kerim who sent her? Meryem assures her he didn’t. She tells Fatma, he came home devastated. I was telling him about you, then all of a sudden he said, “I didn’t do it”. I didn’t understand. Fatma flashes back on Kerim telling her this, too.

Meryem says she suspected the others of casting the blame on him and kept him silent. Fatma remembers Munir trying to push money on Kerim that he didn’t want. Meryem says it was a big shock to her when he took the blame. I wanted to take him to the police myself but everything happened so quickly.

Mustafa has contacted Asu for a doctor recommendation. She meets with him and his parents watch their interaction from a distance. A nice girl for Mustafa? He called her and she came right away! [ha, they should know what she does for a living!]

Emre visits Kerim and Fatma. He needs her help. Asu isn’t answering his calls and he wants Fatma to call her. Fatma calls. Asu makes up another BS story. Emre did nothing wrong. Her family is forcing her to marry someone. Asu cries. Please tell Emre not to contact me anymore. There is no hope. Asu continues to cry after she hangs up.

Fatma breaks the news to Emre. [Notice the look on Kerim’s face?] Fatma says don’t give up if you really love her. Don’t let her be given to another against her will. [look at Kerim again] Don’t turn you back on her when her life is being taken away. Kerim gets up and says Meryem needs him.

dondi356

Fatmagul #13 part 3

Emre says that he liked Asu, but he doesn’t love her enough to fight for her. A man can’t take such a big responsibility for a person he doesn’t even know. I can’t sacrifice my life. [something else for Fatma to consider.]

That evening, Fatma knowingly fills plates that Meryem is taking to Kerim! He’s in the shed playing with that flower. Meryem tells Kerim that Fatma is still talking about divorce and that she hasn’t read his letter.

She tells him she will sell her house. Since he didn’t go they need the money here. He doesn’t want her to do it for him. Who else, Kerim? And she needs money, too. And Fatma needs support. Meryem says her heart is at ease and Kerim’s should be too.

Muka complains about money. She says that Kerim should contribute and Fatma has that money in the bank. Fatma does not want to touch a penny of that dirty money.

Vural makes another appointment with Asu. They cuddle in bed. Asu thinks he’s asleep but he isn’t and he hears her talk about Mustafa, what she did with Emre, and how she is jealous of Fatma. She doesn’t mention any names, of course. [She really likes Mustafa—and we thought prostitution was a bad life choice?]

At dinner, Resat mentions a meeting to make Erdo a partner in the company. Hilmiye drops a bomb, she’s given her shares to Erdo (I think that’s what Rifat left her). If something happens to me, she says, you won’t have to arrange another meeting. Resat and Munir are unhappy and try to talk her into giving the shares to Resat. Erdo isn’t ready for such responsibility. Hilmiye fights for her son’s rights and Perihan is supportive. The talk gets heated. [It’s hard to pay attention to these jackals.]

Fatma is in bed, thinking about what Kerim said on the boat. She has the letter in her hand. She gets up and goes to the window. She makes a noise and hurries back to the bed and shoves the letter under her pillow. Muka comes in. What’s going on? Nothing. Muka leaves but doesn’t really. She sees Fatma place the letter under her mattress. Uh oh….

More Yasaran business stuff. The transfer of Rifat’s shares. Erdo is officially a partner.

Muka says very hateful things to Fatma about being divorced and ending up a prostitute. Rahmi shouts at his wife. Fatma cries.

Meryem speaks to someone about selling the house but not the land.

Kerim decides to make a garden. He has a lead on a job. Meryem tells him she put the house for sale. They are happy until Kerim sees Fatma crying at the window.

Rahmi tells Fatma that Muka is partially right. If she divorces, Muka will go. Rahmi says he isn’t strong enough to protect Fatma. If you don’t have a man people will bother you. No one bothers a married woman. He tells her Kerim has been nice to her and everyone. We are going to work together. Don’t be stubborn, Fatmagül.

Meryem interrupts. She wants to take Fatma to sign up for school. Fatma says she’s not going. Meryem will not take no for an answer.

Kerim gets a call from Vural, who asks why he didn’t go. Kerim gives the “abla” answer. He says he postponed and maybe he will leave in the summer. Vural says he understands. It’s hard to be alone. He wants people around all the time to take his mind off of things. He tells Kerim he’s working for the Yasarans now. Vural still considers Kerim a friend. [good grief, some friend]

There’s trouble in the boardroom. Erdo starts to make waves. Erdo thinks Selim’s wedding shouldn’t be postponed. You can discuss if interested.

Resat and Munir think they can use Mustafa to control Erdo by giving Mustafa a job in the building. But Erdo turns the tables and says Mustafa can be his personal chauffeur and this fits in perfectly with Mustafa’s need to stay close to his mom.

Meryem and Fatma go to the Mukhtar’s office for documents she needs for school. He tells Fatma that someone was looking for her. A man? No, a woman. Uh oh, who could it be?

And we are out.

dondi356, I'm delighted to learn that you're willing and able to do Friday recaps of Hercai again. That's terrific news!! I was afraid that you might not be available for Hercai since you're so actively recapping Fatmagul. It looks as if we may have a full team of recappers, depending on what Nett decides.

Season 2, Epi 2
Part 1

We pick up where we left off the night before, Miran confronting Azizi. She’s indignant that he has the nerve to question her motives as all she’s ever done was to protect her family. The discussion is interrupted when the rest of the family exit the mansion to take Elif to the airport. Elif deals Azizi a blow when she rejects her hug and attempt to accompany her to the airport, making it clear that she’s leaving the family because of Azizi. She doesn’t want anyone but ReyMir to escort her. Azizi's attempt to reach Elif is interrupted by Miran who tells Azizi not to press. Azizi looks truly affected, proclaims her love but Elif moves away from her intended embrace and goes to Nana Sukran for her blessing. Meanwhile, Miran tells Azizi to not make things difficult recognizing how hard it is for Elif to change her life like this. Elif says her goodbyes to everyone but Azizi and takes her leave.

Later that evening, out for a bite to eat, Reyan tries to lift Miran’s spirits. He reflects on her departure but recognizes Elif should be allowed to chart her own path. ReyMir share a cute vision of their future with Reyan narrating how things will go. We see them walking happily through their neighborhood with a child, supporting each other and growing old together. The vision and the story are interrupted when the waiter brings their sandwiches adding that Reyan’s story is very nice like the kind you see in the movies. Miran tells Reyan how much her smile lifts him. He takes her hand and asks that they promise each other not to postpone their dreams ever again despite what’s going on around them. The waiter once again interrupts a tender moment when he brings their drinks.

They return home still eating their sandwiches obviously having a good time. Just as Miran is about to give Reyan a kiss, he hears Azizi yell out for Elif so he runs to see what’s going on.

Back at the Sadoglu mansion, the family enters their terrace to enjoy the evening after dinner. Handan takes the opportunity to ask Nasuf to provide money for a dowry (???) for Yaren but he flat out refuses saying they’ve done enough for her. Before another word is uttered, Azizi barges into their courtyard with ReyMir and Firat in tow. The Sadoglu's are confused and march down to see what’s up. Nasuf demands to know why Azizi is in his home…she starts yelling for Elif. Nasuf is clueless and say’s she not there so Azizi eye’s Cihan and assumes he’s followed thru on his threat to destroy her without using a gun. Firat holds her back while she spews her threats and yells for Elif.

Elif and Azat enter and of course Miran looses it and goes on the attack when Elif grabs Azat hand as they are now married, says Azat. Miran is beside himself with disbelief and Azizi looks stunned and then sad when Azat holds up the wedding book, declaring the marriage is legal and no one can part him from his wife. Reyan looks upon Miran and the scene with apprehension while Cihan congratulates his son. Nasuf seems pleased…Azizi is weak at the knees. Miran grabs the book to make sure it’s legit and lunges for Azat. Elif calls him off confirming she’s there freely. She steps to Azizi in defiance telling her she loves Azat and in return receives a harsh slap from her abuela. Azat goes to Miran and assures him she’s OK. Elif turns back to Azizi telling her she’s ruined everyone’s lives and ruined their home and she doesn’t want her as her abuela. Azizi almost faints and is carried out by Firat and Miran as she tells them not to let her fall in front of her enemy. Elif makes one last plea to Miran not to deprive her of her happiness and to leave. As the guys drag Azizi out, Cihan takes one last stab at Azizi. He pulls out the scarf she dropped in front of their mansion the last time she came their assuming Elif was being held there against her will. He declares that unlike her, the Sadoglus are honest, handing her the scarf. She grabs it….looks back sadly one last time and they leave.

Season 2, Epi 2
Part 2

At home with no word yet, Gonul is worried but Sultana is not concerned. She starts one of her speeches but at this moment, a defeated Azizi returns home with ReyMir and Firat. The roaches come from their hiding place and can see that Azizi is clearly deflated. Firat explains the situation that Elif will stay with the Sadoglus. Azizi rages and lunges at Miran blaming him for Elif’s defection despite Miran reminding her that Elif declared her love for Azat. Azizi is not having it…Elif is innocent and can’t be with her enemy. She grabs Miran by the collar yelling that he’s the one who helped her be defending her. While Azizi was paralyzed with pain of the news, she expected Miran to take charge and get Elif out there. He’s hurt…tears in his eyes…listening to a rant that he’s a traitor. He’s given up his avenging his parents for this woman….pointing at Reyan, says Azizi. Sukran is either taking note of Aziza’s acting or the venganza statement….but she tilts her head with interest. Azizi cries on that they’re going to hurt Elif but Miran has heard enough. Azizi continues crying that Miran’s passion for Reyan has made him forget his family.

With Azizi on her knees crying, Sultana takes the opportunity to shift the blame to Reyan….saying she’s the one who handed Elif over to Azat. Of course Miran defends his wife so Sultana suggest he asks Reyan to speak up saying it was Reyan who encouraged Elif. Reyan confirms she overheard the conversation between Elif and Sultana and knew that Elif was in love with Azat but Elif confided in her ...she did not to incent Elif.

Miran wants to know why Sultana said nothing. Sultana pretends she was just a confidant but it was Reyan who swayed Elif so of course Azizi takes her anger out on Reyan but Sukran calls her out on her years of hateful sins. Sukran then lets Sultana know she’s just like Azizi having lived under her rule for long. Miran pulls Azizi off Sukran and sends Sukran to her room. Azizi continues her tears and cries that she’s been betrayed. Reyan calls Sultana out on her lies ….calls her crazy and storms off. Miran confronts Azizi telling her she’s the one that’s guilty and her actions led Elif to seek refuge with the enemy. He storms off as well leaving Azizi to contemplate.

Miran storms into their room, still hot from his confrontation with everything. When Reyan tries to assure him that while she knew Elif was in love, she didn’t do anything to instigate the marriage. He tells her he believes her but she still should have said something to him. Reyan explains she thought Elif was leaving the country and had no idea she would runoff and get married. She assures Miran that Azat would never do anything to hurt Elif. Miran is agitated by it all and especially by her defense of Azat. Miran thinks Reyan is clueless as to why Azat really married Elif but she asks him to enlighten her, he storms out of the room.

Back at the Sadoglu house, with all looking on, Nasuf congrats Azat for exacting revenge on the Aslanbey’s. This declaration surprises Azat while Yaren just looks on and smirks. Azat stands up and asks Nasuf what venganza. He tells him to take a look at Elif and the state she’s in. He is not using her to get at the Aslanbey’s. She is his wife and the family better treat her as such and with respect. When Nasuf attempt to say otherwise, Hazar tries to get him to reason but Nasuf continues on. The conversation upsets Elif so she runs out of the room Hazar appear to go after her. Azat warns the family one gain to treat Elif as his wife.

Azizi paces her room, muttering to herself, blaming Miran Sadoglu. She vows to burn all the Sadoglus if they harm Elif.

Part 3

Reyan approaches a still affected Miran on the rooftop. She reminds him of the promise they made earlier and she wants to know what he meant regarding Azat’s intentions. He finally tells her he thinks Azat went after Elif to get back at him. He’s disturbed that Elif is now with Azat, who still loves Reyan. She implores him to think things through and recognize that Elif made her own choice out of love for Azat. Miran thinks that Elif is naïve having been protected by Azizi all her life…and doesn’t know the world. She doesn’t know how to defend herself. Reyan asks Miran to trust her….Azat won’t hurt Elif…but Miran isn’t convinced knowing that Azat does not and will never love Elif. She asks him how he can be so sure and points out that Elif is stronger than he gives her credit for. She stood up to Azizi, left the mansion and found her love.

Elsewhere Gonul confesses to Firat that she knows her abuela and she fears she’s going to do something drastic. As if on cue, Azizi calls to Firat to gather their men so they can liberate Elif from the Sadoglus and destroy the Sadoglu mansion. Firat and Gonul implore Azizi to not make matters worse and if they’re going to do anything, they need to take precautions for Elif. Azizi wants to act tonight before Azat can dishonor Elif. Miran comes to her but she spits that he’s forgotten his priorities and is ignoring what they did to his mother. He’s despicable for it. She tries to incite Miran more by saying they’re going to do the same thing to Elif that they did to his mother but he let the fire in his heart die. Miran tells her to shut up but she keeps going saying she’ll never abandon her granddaughter. She finally get’s Miran to say that he will go get Elif himself. Reyan runs after him asking him not to do go.

Dondi - Thank you! Thank you! For another fantastic recap!!!

This - [She really likes Mustafa—and we thought prostitution was a bad life choice?] was so funny!!! No kidding!

And this - Fatma breaks the news to Emre. [Notice the look on Kerim’s face?] Fatma says don’t give up if you really love her. Don’t let her be given to another against her will. [look at Kerim again] Yes, absolutely! Those looks on his face were heartbreaking! Absolutely devastating and the performance was phenomenal! And I do think that Fatma did consider it immediately when Emre said a man wouldn't just give up his life for some girl he barely knew - that's exactly what Kerim did and it was telling that she immediately looked over in Kerim's direction (whether he was still out there or inside) as soon as he said it.

I loved the scenes with Meryem telling Fatma about that morning and her reaction to Kerim's 'admission' and also Fatma thinking back to what Kerim had told her before.

The storytelling in this show is so beautifully done. From the facial expressions to the dialog, and even in the pacing, all the long pauses as if the show itself is digesting what just happened before going forward. It's really haunting - and it should be.

Rhemi telling Fatma that he wasn't strong enough to protect her was so sad but true. It's amazing self-awareness that he realizes that he can't protect his baby sister, but also heartbreaking. You just want to hug him. Here's yet another character where you can wonder, what is life like for him? What is it like to truly love your sister and your family and want to protect them and yet know that you can't?

Can't help you with any of the details of the rotten ricos because I wasn't listening to them! :)

For some reason, my part I post keep disappearing. It was there when I posted parts 2 and 3 and then it disappeared. When I reposted it ...twice...it disappeared after appearing to have been posted.

Bummer...it covered Elif's departure to the "airport" and the revelation that she and Azat had snuck and got married. Also included some cute alone time with ReyMir.

Thanks very much, Nett, for this terrific recap. You caught everything, even subtle things like Sukran's tilting her head up when she hears Azize say that Miran forgot to avenge his parents. I'm really glad Sukran heard Azize say that, since Sukran knows a very different version than the one Azize has fed Miran. I'm just sorry that Sukran wasn't present later (on the balcony or the roof, I don't recall which) when Azize tells Miran that the Sadoglu will to do Elif what they did to Miran's mother and asks him, "How can you ignore the pain they inflicted on your mother?" Wow! I can just imagine Sukran's reaction had she heard this.

I was also glad that when Nasuh complimented Azat for using Elif for venganza against the Aslanbey, Azat set him straight and made it clear that his marrying Elif had nothing to do with venganza. It took guts to stand up to his grandfather, especially in public.

At one point, after Azize has gone on a mad tirade, accusing just about everyone of betraying her, Miran admits to Azize that he is partly to blame for the situation with Elif. How? He says,"I shouldn't have permitted you to have custody of Elif." Hmmm...I've never quite understood the power dynamics in Turkish families. How old would Miran have been when Azize got custody of Elif? My guess is that he might still have been in his teens. Why would he have had the power to permit or not permit his grandmother to have custody of her granddaughter? Is the fact that he's the oldest surviving male all that it takes to give him legal authority over everyone else in the family, including his grandmother?

I'm still trying to figure out just how Elif and Azat got together on the day Miran drove her to the airport. Was the plan we saw her mention to Azat in an earlier episode that he would meet her at the airport? Presumably ReyMir were not in on the plan. My guess is that Elif and Azat got married several days or more before she went to the airport. They then arranged that he'd meet her at the airport and take her back to the Sadoglu konak.

Again, many thanks, Nett, for this recap and your volunteering to do more of them.

Fatmagul

Thank you, dondi356.

"I think I love that girl. Now it’s Fatma’s turn to panic." I liked this description. Unfortunately, Unimas cut Fatmagul's reaction to this, her stunned look, how she rushed back home, touched her face with her hands. She was shocked.

"Kerim tells her he wanted to go but he couldn’t. I think he wants to tell her the real reason but is afraid to say it. She tells him to shut up, she doesn’t want to listen to anymore lies." I think he was about to tell her about his feelings and she sensed it. That is why she cut him off. She did not want to hear it and to have to respond to it.

Thanks for pointing out the parallels of Emre and Asu situation and Fatmagul and Kerim reaction to it and how it was depicted, just by looks.

"That evening, Fatma knowingly fills plates that Meryem is taking to Kerim!" - small steps.

Fatmagul reads the letter again at night. It is obvious that it touched her.

Herc

Good recap. Thank you, Nett.

I am trying to understand what Azat and Elif were thinking when they decided to marry. I think Azat was thinking that it would influence Azize and prevent her from causing harm to Reyyan, now that he has Elif as a kind of hostage. And Elif was thinking to influence Azize to stop the venganza in general, putting herself as a human shield in front of the Sadoglu family. I am always amazed that people in these stories take drastic measures in slight hopes of influencing someone's behavior. I see very little chance that Azize gives up her venganza and even less that it will, in any way, change her actions toward Reyyan. On the contrary, the war may now go into the hot phase.

Fatmagul

Dondi, thank you for giving us every detail . These writers know how to spin a fantastic tale and so do you . Love your writing style and your comments about what's happening visually . These actors and actresses convey so much with facial expressions and body language. You see and feel their frustration, pain, anger, love.

Watching Muka ramp up her torture of Fatmagul is soul crushing . Now her anger is spilling over onto Kerim and Meryem as they both try their best to shield Fatmagul from her abusive words . I get the feeling that Fatmagu l also received a lot of physical abuse from Muka growing up . She knows how to protect her head with her arms. Poor thing. Muka wants everybody to do as she says and dishes out the yelling and nagging to everyone ..Rami, Kerim,Meryem ,especially when they dare to stand up to her when she is on Fatmagul 's case. What a witch. Despise her .

Fatmagul definitely had an epiphany when Emre made that comment about a man sacrificing his life for a woman he barely knows.. . Bingo .

I am amazed that the Yaserans think it's a good idea to have crazed Mustafa buzzing so close to them. Erdogan seems to make one bad decision after the other. ...and he likes to make those bad decisions for others .

Then, we have Meryem who tries every day to be positive, pragnatic, loving. I've had people in my life like Meryem. I want to be Meryem. What a loving heart. So everyday , I tell myself ...you can help or you can hurt .

Fatmagul

Great comments Darcy and Lucio.

Fatmagül

Thanks for reading and commenting, everyone.

So glad you’re loving this show, Darcy. I love it, too. “Those looks on his face were heartbreaking! Absolutely devastating and the performance was phenomenal!” That’s Engin Akyürek! My favorite Turkish actor. We were watching him in “La Hija del Embajador” and now we’re waiting for season 3.

It’s clear Kerim’s letter has sparked a turning point. Meryem’s been working on Fatma, too. Fatma hasn’t asked Kerim to give those flowers back.

There are no words left to describe disgusting Mukaddes. You think it can’t get any worse, and then…

Lucio, the “small steps” are what makes this show seem so real and so special. There’s so much detail, verbal and especially non-verbal, to pick up on in each episode. At two hours each, it’s difficult to cover in a mini cap. I just don’t have the time to do it justice.

Thank you Susanlynn. It’s nice to know you can overlook my typos, bad grammar and lack of proper punctuation. It must be hard for you being an English instructor.

I'll try to get something posted later this evening.

Thanks so much, Nett. This was a fabulous recap. I really needed it because bad weather had my reception going in and out. I missed some details.

The roaches have returned!

I like the Bad Grannie vs. Good Grannie angle.

I hated that Miran ruined a perfectly good piece of furniture.

Azat won’t want to hurt Elif but she will be if he can’t return the love she has for him.

I haven’t had time to check the Turkish ep, so I don’t know if Telemundo cut anything important regarding Elif and Azat. But we know they had this planned. I don’t know if there’s more of an explanation on Miran’s statement about Elif’s custody, too. I’ll try to check later.

Is novelera recapping tonight? Do we have a confirmed season 2 schedule starting next week?

dondi356

herc

I sure do enjoy your recaps Nett. Thank you!

ReyMir are good when they are alone. Azize brings out the worst in Miran. So now I guess we know what Azat and Elif were planning when they met in his truck during the season one finale. Like you Juanita, how did that happen? Azat must have met her at the airport. I don’t think they had time to get married before the trip to the airport. Hopefully we get a flash back or something.

I have not had time to review the Turkish episode (#29) so not sure if things were already cut out.

I liked Grannie Sukran giving it good to Azize. Reyyan has a long row to hoe in keeping Mr. Mopey/Meltdown on a steady path.

herc

Ooops! We are on Turkish episode #27 about 1 hour 25 minutes in.

OT...Dondi, trust me ..after teaching grammar and writing for years and proofreading lots of compositions , including those written by our 2 daughters, I come here to just enjoy the recaps and comments and friendly banter. Communicating is the main goal. I love your recaps which clearly show your appreciation for these mesmerizing stories.I

Thanks to you , I have a new telenovio . Those eyes. That face. Engin is an amazing actor. He makes me believe everything he says and does and shows. For example, he seems to actually know how to weld ! I wonder if he has worked as a welder . I had a student from Syria who was a welder whose mother was Turkish . His name was Jamel ( Handsome in Arabic), so watching those welding scenes makes me think him .

Hi Nett. Is there any chance you could do Wednesday recaps? That's the one day we didn't have a regular recapper for during season 1. Novelera did the Thursday recaps then, and she has said that, if possible, she'd like to continue doing Thursday for Season 2. Is Wednesday a possibility for you?

herc

Dondi, when you posted you'd be recapping Hercai on Fridays, I assumed you would do tonight's recap, so I didn't plan to do so. This works great for me because my monthly dinner and chat group is meeting tonight, and I'd have to watch and then do the recap rather late.

herc

I am awaiting Nett's reply to Juanita about Wednesday recapping. If I stop doing Thursday, as I did for Season 1, and change to Wednesday for Season 2, my Wednesday recaps would be brief. My Spanish class will be back in session beginning the first week of January and, as I may have mentioned before, it meets quite late because the instructor teaches Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Spanish, all on Wednesdays. Because our group in Advanced has fewer students than the other classes, we've been relegated to the late hour (8PM to 10PM)!

I've been in this class for over 25 years. A co-worker, Mexican American and born in the Bay Area, likes to tease me. What? You haven't graduated yet?

fatmagul

Thanks so much, dondi. Yes, Muka is intolerable. It looks like that uncomfortable living arrangement is not ending anytime soon. She's now trying to wrest the money in that account from Fatmagul. I know Rahmi is like a child, but I hate it when he sides with the witch for his own convenience. I also had the impression that she might have said she'd leave (alone). Of course she's not going anywhere; but, if she did so, she'd probably leave the kid. She couldn't wait to pack him off to kindergarten (or nursery school...not sure which it's supposed to be). She even was happy they were saving on feeding the kid lunch!

I was glad to see Erdo thwart Resat and Munir's plan to use Mustafa to keep him in line. Munir is despicable. One of the rottens said something about Kerim probably having gone through the money and stayed to extract more.

Something about Mustafa's mother drives me nuts. It's probably a cultural thing, but her cloying love just seems over the top to me. I am also the mother of one child, also a son. He was raised fairly free range. He moved to Arizona, where his wife was born, and I was sad. But I always trusted him to make his own decisions. Now he's back in Califa and I'm very happy. But he's an adult, and I treat him that way, respecting his decisions.

I also noticed Kerim's non-verbal reaction to Fatma's comment about wanting Emre to stop a forced marriage.

Fatmagul

Novelera, I have taught both Middle eastern mothers and sons , and they definitely have a very strong bond.

Muka is greedy and bossy . It must be awful having to live with someone who thinks he \she is the boss of everything and everyone . Meryem is the exAct opposite of Muka. We see good vs evil playing out in that household.

Challenge : See if you can catch Muka saying " please" or " thank you" to anyone anywhere , any time . She Loves to utter commands to everyone in her orbit.

herc

Such a fine recap, Nett! Thanks so much. I am sorry about the problems that seem to be happening with recappers' posts on Blogger. Not sure why that is happening. And a big thanks to Rgv Chick for sorting these things out for us.

That was a very, very dramatic second episode of season 2! The writers of this one seem to reveal something having happened without saying how. And then later, in a grey flashback, we find out how. I am also supposing Elif told Miran and Reyyan they didn't need to come to the gate with her. They probably left and Azat came for her.

It's interesting the strength of HAG's love for this grandchild and only this grandchild. I sort of assume that her son who died in the automobile crash may have been the only decent one. Mehmet, who married Dilsuh, was shown beating Dilsuh. And the one who was married to Sultana was truly awful; we saw the burn mark on her stomach that he inflicted, causing her to give birth to a stillborn (she thinks). So maybe Elif's parents were decent people and this made her Azize's favorite. She has certainly shown plenty of contempt for Gonul, even tricking her with revealing the whereabouts of her brother if she accepted Miran's marrying Reyyan.

Nasuh is an idiot. Who announces a marriage as being for revenge in front of the bride? I think what Reyyan told Miran will come to pass. Elif will win Azat's love.

I have no idea how they're going to resolve Miran's storming off to get Elif for his grandmother. I'm 99% sure it won't happen. But I don't know how the resolution will take place. Either Reyyan convinces him not to go at all. Or Cihan and Nasuh manage to threaten him at gunpoint.

Sultana's scheming is just awful. She helped orchestrate the Azat/Elif marriage. And, when it's happened, she tries to blame it all on Reyyan.

I also enjoyed Sukran's take-down of Azize. She told her what she thinks of her in front of the whole bunch of roaches.

I can switch to wed recap if needed.

Nett, I would SO appreciate it if you could recap on Wednesdays! As I mentioned, this has historically been a bad night for me to put up anything except a few bullet points because of my Spanish class.

Thursdays have been working for me. Sometimes I have a book club that night, but I just plan to burn a bit of midnight oil those nights.

Looks like we have a full schedule of recappers for Season 2 of Hercai. Fantastic!

Dondi, you are an Amazon! Don't ever apologize for when you get the recap on Blogger. Thanks so much for resuming Friday's episodes. I don't know how you manage to recap two, but I'm grateful for it.

Fatmagül #14 part 1

Slight cut: Mukaddes returns to the house with New Year’s decorations. She sends Rahmi out back to help Kerim to take the opportunity to snoop while Fatma is out with Meryem. [we knew this was coming.] She makes a beeline for the mattress. She reads the attorney letter.

Rahmi tells Kerim about the decorations. He would like a tree just like in the movies or in the stores or hotels. Kerim thinks that maybe they shouldn’t be celebrating anything right now. Rahmi says this time of year makes him feel warm and fuzzy. He always asks God for a good year and he listens.

This scene has a bad translation. No one mentions Christmas. They don’t celebrate Christmas. But they do celebrate New Year’s like Christmas. Gatherings and presents. And you will see winter holiday decorations and decorated trees, in the city and in some homes. Just like we do for Christmas. Believe it or not, I’ve even seen Santa Claus decorations in some shows!

Muka comes out and sends Rahmi on an errand so she can torture Kerim. She questions him about the attorney letter. What will happen to Fatma when she’s no longer a married woman? She will be at the mercy of other men. Muka doesn’t want to take care of her anymore. Kerim says that Fatma would do much better without Muka’s care. Muka tears up the letter—you won’t divorce. Kerim says tearing the letter won’t stop anything. If Fatma wants a divorce, there’s nothing you can do. We will go together.

Muka says really? If Fatmagül wanted to divorce you, she wouldn’t have kept the letter you wrote her under her pillow. She flashes the letter. Kerim is stunned for a moment, then grabs the letter from Muka. Yep, Kerim, that’s your letter! The one Fatma said she ripped and tossed.

This was the end of ep 14 and they edited this scene: the look on Kerim’s face when he saw the letter—a small hopeful smile! Muka notices and Kerim notices her noticing and he stops smiling. He tells Muka she is not to tell Fatma she showed him the letter. She must put the letter back in its place. He says if she does this he will stay.

Muka says it’s not like you would leave anyway, I saw your face. Forget about the divorce. Oh, the attorney letter is ripped Fatma will find out. Kerim says he can replace it with his copy. Kerim goes into the shed and gets his copy. He can’t stop smiling.

Meryem and Fatma wonder who could have been looking for her. Meryem wonders if it was a relative Mustafa has here. Fatma says no, and don’t tell Rahmi, he would worry. And Muka will take it badly, too.

Mustafa gets some clothes for his new position as Erdo’s driver. Flash to Erdo telling Mustafa he needs a trustworthy and hard-working man. Loyalty is the most important thing for me, Erdo says. Be respectful, but you don’t owe Munir Bey anything because he hired you. You’re my man, now. Erdo gives him money for new clothes.

Muka puts the letter back in its place. But then she takes the attorney letter and puts it in her room.

They decorate outside the house and Meryem and Fatma return home. Beyhan and Emre are there helping. Meryem tells Muka that Fatma is all set to start her studies. They have her books and everything.

Beyhan says that Erol needs help at his restaurant, New Year is coming and some of the staff quit. She proposes that perhaps they can go help Erol, then stay for the celebration. Emre says they always go to Erol’s for their New Year’s celebrations. Muka pushes for it.

Kerim has a job lined up. There’s lots of work for the New Year celebrations.
More Yasaran stuff. Munir, Resat and Selim talk about Erdo’s move to hire Mustafa. It’s put them in a bad position.

Kerim suggests to Meryem that they buy New Year’s presents for everyone. He tells Meryem to tell Fatma his gift is from her.

dondi356

Fatmagul #14 part 2

Meryem tells Kerim about the woman who was asking about Fatma’s address. Meryem is uneasy about it. She asks Kerim if he has any idea. Meryem wonders if it’s a relative of Mustafa’s. Now Kerim is worried.

Kerim gets a call from Munir. He’s ticked. He wants to know what made Kerim change his mind after all that hassle to get his papers. Kerim just says he changed his mind. Munir drops a bomb on Kerim: Mustafa is Erdo’s new driver.

Munir has some questions for Kerim: Why is Erdo trying to learn your address? Why is Erdo asking about Fatma? Why is he interested in her? Why does Erdo want you to leave so badly? [This plays into the dream Kerim had on the way to the airport.]

Munir tells Kerim that Erdo had followed him to the hotel they stayed at when they first came to Istanbul. Munir tells him to beware of Erdo. Resat and Munir laugh about pitting Kerim against Erdo. [this sounds almost as bad as using Mustafa to control Erdo.] Maybe they can get rid of all 3 this way,

Kerim is upset. He thinks back to what the rotten ricos said about Fatma after they saw her with the sheep.

Mustafa spends some time with his parents. They are surprised and not too thrilled to find out he’s working for the Yasarans. Emin says the Yasarans have a bad rep in their town, not to mention the recent newspaper articles. Mustafa loses his temper a bit. He defends the Yasarans and says it’s Fatma who cheated on him.

Selim complains to Vural that Erdo is using Mustafa as a threat against them. Vural doesn’t give a damn and hangs up on Selim.

Kerim watches Fatma in the kitchen from his window. He almost leaves the shed for the house, but then thinks twice. He goes back to the window.

Erdo calls Kerim but he doesn’t take the call. He sends a text to Kerim: we need to talk, we need to meet, call me, it’s important.

Fatma gets into bed, then gets back up again. She takes Kerim’s letter out and reads.
Kerim can’t sleep he gets up and sits and stares out his window at the house. [this is getting a little creepy]

Next morning, Kerim looks out the window again and sees Fatma in the yard feeding pigeons. He sees her walk away and notices there’s something wrong with her shoes. He goes out and greets her, good morning. She actually turns and nods at him. [hmmm…] He asks her about her studies. He can help her if she wants. She would ask anyone but him!

Meryem comes out. And gives Kerim something to take to eat on his way to the job. He has no time for tea. Kerim looks at Fatma’s beat up shoes. Later as he works he notices some nice boots in a store window.

The Ketencis meet with Erol and let him know they are willing to help at New Year’s. They talk about the menu. Muka touts her skills at cooking, Rahmi mentions that she learned some things from Fatma. And they will prepare turkey. Have you wondered what they call a turkey in Turkey? It’s “hindi”.

As they head to Erol’s kitchen, Emre stops Fatma. He wants her to call Asu again. You told me not to give up, he says, ask her to come to NYE. Muka watches from inside as Emre gives Fatma the number so she can call later.

Kerim gets paid and he goes to buy the boots he saw. He has to call Meryem to find out what size he should get.

The Ketencis leave Erol’s and Muka sends Rahmi on an errand. Muka wants to know what was going on between Fatma and Emre. She saw he wrote something and gave it to her. A poem? A love letter? Fatma tells Muka what Emre wanted. Muka warns her not to call, the girl is promised to someone else.

Kerim sees a ladies winter coat in another store window. He goes inside.

dondi356

Fatmagul #14 part 3

Dinner is ready and Fatma knocks on Meryem’s door. She peeks inside and sees all the gifts. New Year’s gifts, Meryem says. Muka comes running. They decide to open them early. Kerim watches through his window. He sees Fatma take the coat and put it on right away. Çok güzel, (very beautiful) Fatma says with delight. Thank you. Fatma opens the boots and tries them on right away.

Envious Muka notes that Fatma got several nice gifts. And she complains about hers. Muka cracks at Meryem, let’s see if your boy is as considerate as you. Fatma blows up. You have to bother me? It bothers you to see me smile?

Erdo meets up with Selim, Meltem and Vural at a bar. Meltem mentions that her cousin Gaye has come along tonight. Gaye comes back to the table. Erdo looks interested.

Mustafa waits in the car for Erdo. He takes some things out of the glove box. There are pictures and he looks at them. One of the pictures is the rotten ricos with Kerim. Uh oh… now he remembers Kerim from the engagement party. He puts the pic in his pocket.

Meryem tells Kerim that Fatma was very happy with her gifts. They all were very happy… well almost all. Kerim says he wishes they could go from Istanbul, maybe go abroad. Start a new life without the shadows following us.

Meryem thinks they don’t have to worry about Mustafa anymore. He has a new girlfriend. Kerim wonders then who is the woman trying to find Fatma. Meryem thinks that might have been Meltem. Meryem says it’s a new year. It will bring better things for us. Many things will change for you and Fatmagül.

It’s New Year’s Eve and everyone is working at Erol’s. Emre asks if Fatma called Asu. Fatma says she did and Asu is not coming. Fatma lied to Emre, she never called Asu.

Perihan receives a diamond necklace from Resat with a card that says he won’t be able to spend NYE with her but he will make it up. Perihan makes a call to Resat. Aren’t you going to be home with us tonight, she asks. He says yes. Well then, it seems your jeweler made a mistake. Ha, that necklace was for Resat’s mistress. No way Resat can cover this. Perihan cries.

Customers start to arrive at the restaurant. Muka is already drinking in the kitchen as the others tidy up.

Kerim is home getting ready for the party. He takes the letter out from under Fatma’s mattress. He smiles and puts it back.

New Year’s Eve at the Yasarans. Should we care? Gaye asks Perihan why she’s not wearing the lovely diamond necklace. Perihan says there was something wrong with the clasp. Erdo says so that’s why my uncle was shouting today—find that jeweler!

New Year’s Eve at Erol’s. Muka is drunk. Kerim arrives and Muka shouts for him to come over. He has gifts for Murat and his friend. Fatma gives Meryem a gift she made, a kerchief.

Fatma comes to the table and the look on Kerim’s face….wow. Meryem greets Kerim with kisses. And Fatma tells Kerim, hoşgeldin (welcome) I think his heart stopped for a second. Kerim has a hard time keeping his eyes off of Fatma.

The Nalcalis watch NYE festivities on tv in the hotel room. Should we care?

Fatmagul #14 Part 4

Emre and Kerim drink raki. Emre asks Fatma if she wants a drink. She doesn’t. He asks again and Kerim says don’t pressure her. Emre asks if she goes crazy when she drinks. No, not me, Fatma says with a quick look in Kerim’s direction.

Ugh. We go back to the Yasarans. Selim calls Vural to come over. He tells Selim he’s not alone and hangs up. Asu asks him why is he so unhappy? Who do you ask for forgiveness? Vural is not in any mood to answer and he tells Asu we won’t talk about the woman you’re jealous of either. He says she can leave whenever she wants. Then she asks him did you kill someone?

A slow dance at Erol’s. Fatma and Kerim are the only ones seated. Beyhan comes over and tells them to get up and dance. Fatma says her foot isn’t completely better yet. Then Muka comes over and starts pestering.

After downing some raki for courage, Kerim grabs Fatma’s hand. Everyone is watching us, he tells her, let’s dance a little. I’ll make you pay for this, she replies. He’s into it but she’s clearly not.

As they dance he tells her, if you read my letter, I wrote “wherever I go in this world…I will always be thinking about you.” Fatma says she doesn’t want to know anything in that letter. Kerim says, how I wish you read it and knew what is in it. I don’t believe anything you say, she replies. He says, maybe one day…. Never, Fatma tells him, that day will never come.

She breaks away from him just as it’s time for the countdown to midnight. At midnight, Kerim approaches Fatma and she hurries back to her seat.

Party is over, everyone is home. Muka is very drunk. They all try to get Muka to bed. Fatma goes in a drawer and finds the attorney letter that Muka hid. Why do you have this, she asks Muka. Drunk Muka spills the beans. I didn’t touch your letter, I just took this. Kerim told me to put the letter back in its place. Fatma rushes into the hall and Kerim is standing there. He heard everything Muka said. He leaves.

Fatma cries and Meryem goes to comfort her. Don’t be ashamed. Kerim wrote that letter with lots of affection for you. Fatma wants to be left alone.

Kerim is upset, too.

Fatma takes the letter from the mattress. She tears it up and throws it into the stove.

And we are out.

dondi356

Dondi thank you for another superb recap! And for once again clearing up the confusion caused by the hack editors! I couldn't understand how that letter from the attorney wasn't ripped up and why Kerim would give the letter back to Muka so she could put it under Fatma's bed again.

I do not understand these cuts at all. Like I said yesterday, they can not be watching this show or know anything about the plot. They consistently cut very important scenes. Dudes, cut the rotten rico scenes if you have to cut something. Leave Fatma and Kerim scenes alone.

I 1000% agree that Kerim staring out his window at Fatma 24/7 would be getting creepy by now. I had that thought too, however, cinematically I think it's a really beautiful way to portray all the longing and frustration and other complicated feelings without having the characters regurgitate dialog over and over again day after day like a lot of shows do and that gets tiresome fast. And as a bonus, we in the audience get to spend lots of time staring into those beautiful expressive eyes Engin has, I think it's a winning idea! :)

I wonder if News Year's would have gone better if Kerim hadn't drunk? The dancing was too much too soon but prior to that Fatma actually said hi to him and welcomed him for the first time and then she was clearly upset with the alcohol...maybe she wouldn't have gotten so brittle if he hadn't been drinking? But then maybe the whole situation with the dancing and the romantic undercurrents of the holiday would have been a trigger either way.

The scene with Munir manipulating Kerim and Resat laughing in the background felt like a pivot point. Up until now, yes they have done horrible things but it's felt like damage control and simply doing what they thought they needed to do to cover their asses. But this move feels more villainous more calculated, it's for sport more than for survival. Why do they need Kerim to leave so badly anyway? He's living quietly, minding his business and staying far far out of theirs. Where's the threat? I could see it if he was coming to the building daily, making threats, demanding more money, making waves...there would be a motive to still want to see him flee the country. But at this point, if they just left him the hell alone they would probably never hear from him again so what's the point in harassing him? Maybe they think Mustafa will find him if he doesn't leave and that will cause a problem?

I'm glad Fatma didn't call Asu, Erme doesn't need more heartache just to advance the plot.

Stupid Muka destroying whatever itty bitty process may have actually been made. Bye-bye letter. But as often as it showed her reading it, I am sure she has it memorized anyway. It's so sad, her words to Muka were so true. She can't stand to even see Fatma smile or have a minute's peace - she just attacks.

Fatmagul

Dondi, thank you for another excellent account of the continuing drama.

I guess Muka doesn't know that Kevin actually went to the airport to leave . The way she smirks as she gets into his personal space and tries to tell him what to do, think, and say drive me carzy. The look he gets on his face when she launches into one of her signature tirades is one of utter disbelief . Having grown up in Meryems' loving care and as Galip's apprentice, Kerim isn't used to a harridan like Muk.

Watching Kerim do an honest days work and using what he earned to buy a coat and boots for Fatmagul was heartwarming , and nobody knows he did that except Meryem. That's true love.

We are seeing that Fatmagul actually dodged a bullet when Mustafa rejected her . Guy is a mess.

Muka is all about the drinking and dancing . For someone who is always scolding Fatmagul about being a bad girl , she sure likes to shake it ,shake it on the dance floor. Besides being envious of all the gifts Meryem gave Fatmagul, she didn't like the sweater from Meryem because it was the low cut V style she prefers to show off her ...charms.

It was sweet watching Fatmagul shyly giving Meryem the scarf that she edged in crochet . I have a similar one from a former Turkish student , so these types of scarves must be a popular item in Turkey .

Kerim worked all day before NYE and was so happy and hopeful about joining the family at that party . It hurt to watch .

Erdo keeps making one odd decision after another while thinking he is super smart . Vural is out of it and suffering .

Fatmagul

Darcy, everything you said was spot on .

I think that the writers putting Kerim in that shed instead of in the house was genius. It seems symbolic of Kerim not being a true part of the family , an exile . He did his part by marrying Fatmagul under pressure from Munir and fatmagul had no choice due to Muk terrorizing her. As he gazes out his window at the house trying to catch a glimpse of the people living inside the house together , we don't need dialogue to feel his longing and loneliness.

Herc S2 ep 3 part 1

Reyyan tells Miran, you must stay. Sra. Azize know how to reopen your wounds. Whenever you start to heal, she reopens them again. Miran says Rey doesn’t understand. She reminds him how much she sacrificed to be with him. She asks, will you make Elif sacrifice, too? Gul is there, my pregnant mother is there, she tells him. They would never hurt anyone on purpose. But if you show up, you will start a war. Can you live with that? You will regret listening to your grandmother. Don’t let your grandma manipulate you.

Miran struggles with Reyyan’s words for a moment, then he shuts the door. Rey gives him a hug. Would you like to go for a walk? He nods. We see an unhappy Azize and Gonul.

Meanwhile at the Sadoglus, Hazar sits to speak with Elif. He tells her not to be afraid. He sort of apologizes for Nasuh’s words. He tells Elif she is not alone. You have Azat, me and Zehra. I can’t ask you to see me as a father, but… try to see me as your friend. Elif is weepy, she says there is no need for compassion, your father is right, I don’t deserve it. You almost died because of me.

Hazar places his hand on hers. Shh… you made a mistake, you were scared. You were scared, but I did something even worse. My lies made you a prisoner. I learned a lesson from a young woman. You’re a lot braver than I am. Do you think so, Elif asks? Hazar says the whole incident between them has been forgotten. We are family now. I don’t want Reyyan to feel like an outsider there and I feel the same way about you. Elif is very grateful.

Hazar has a question: do you really love Azat? Yes. What about Azat? She shakes her head. He doesn’t know how much I love him. Hazar is surprised… what you said downstairs…

Azat comes out of his room and listens in. Elif tells Hazar, I said that so my family would leave. Miran has a bad temper, but he understands love. I knew he’d leave if I said we love each other. Hazar realizes that this is not a true love match.
Azat interrupts, Elif, you are tired. I can take you to my room… our room. She goes with Azat.

Handan is pleased with the turn of events. She tells Cihan she had given up, but when Azat showed up with the wedding certificate, I thought my heart would burst. Cihan says he didn’t do anything. He knew Azat’s feelings for Reyyan would fix it. Handan doesn’t care the reason, all that matters is they are married.

Cihan says he knows his son well and he knows this marriage will never be real. Don’t get too excited about being an MIL. Handan wants to know why. Cihan says they won’t sleep together. Handan gets it. How will we ensure that Azize lets the girl stay here? Azize can never know what’s going on, Cihan replies.

Nasuh walks up on the two. Handan thinks fast, we are talking about Azat’s wedding celebration. We want something glamorous. Nasuh bristles, we didn’t accept this girl to be our bride! We did it for revenge! And you talk about glamorous wedding festivities?
Cihan explains that’s why they need to do it. We need to show everyone and Azize that Elif is the new Sadoglu bride. That hag will suffer. Nasuh is against it. Hazar shows up and speaks, Cihan is right. We must celebrate the wedding. Nasuh is ticked. That girl tried to kill you! Hazar says it was an accident, she didn’t mean it.

Nasuh continues, did you forget what Azize did to Reyyan? No, Hazar replies, but have you forgotten your regrets concerning Reyyan? Hazar says, don’t make the same mistake with another innocent girl. We shouldn’t want these kids to suffer like we have, Hazar says. We should have a celebration fit for the bride and groom’s families. That put Grandpa Tyrant in his place!

Herc S2 ep 3 part 2

ReyMir walk. Miran says, I can understand now…the pain I caused you. Not just yours but your family’s and everyone. I wanted them to suffer like I had, or like my grandmother suffers now to destroy them. Rey says this isn’t about me or us.

He tells her she is wrong, it is about him. [yes, it’s all about you, Miran. Should we call him Me-ran now?] Everyone has paid the price for what I have done. Now it’s Elif’s turn. It was necessary for me to go through this to understand you.

Don’t torture yourself, Rey tells him, this must end [I second that] We’ve been tested, it’s hard. Maybe it isn’t over [we have 41 more Turkish eps to go]. But in spite of everything, we are still together. They can be together, too. It’s not impossible. [but not likely, Rey] My cousin… Miran interrupts, your cousin is not as cruel as me. He’s not filled with hatred like me. She shakes her head no. My cousin has been loved all his life.

Miran whines, I thought it was over. That I paid with all my suffering. I’d been punished and it was over. But it’s not over yet. Apparently I have not suffered enough. Rey says that Elif is neither your punishment nor your test. But she’s not a piece of furniture you can move around either. [I thought of that chair Miran tossed off the balcony] If Elif doesn’t want to return, there’s nothing you can do.

Miran says maybe Rey is right. Maybe Azat won’t hurt her and abandon her like I did with you. He feels Elif won’t be happy because she won’t be accepted. She pushed Hazar, she is Azize’s granddaughter. And Azat doesn’t love Elif. He says, now I’m worried… I’m anxious because I don’t know what’s happening.

Nasuh calls Azize to rub it in. I bet your heart is hurting now. Take care of your heart, Nasuh tells her, so we can share a dance. Fate has made us family once again. Azize panics, if you touch a single hair on my granddaughter’s head…

No, woman, Nasuh says, when will you understand that you and I are different. If you don’t hurt Reyyan, I won’t hurt Elif. Your granddaughter came and I gave her my blessing. I allowed her the Sadoglu name. Azat is planning a big wedding celebration in the Sadoglu mansion. I wanted you to find out from me. Azize is sickened. She counters, I’ll have your funeral before I celebrate any wedding, Nasuh bellows with laughter.

Back to ReyMir. Rey says Elif won’t come back. Let her live her life. You may be right, but she has to go through it. Let her grow up. She offers to go visit them. Miran doesn’t want her to go. Rey suggests going home. He doesn’t want to go. Its walls are covered with lies, he says, if I touch them, they will stick to me [too late]. Rey says we won’t run. We won’t give up. Grannie Sukran is there. Miran looks at her, I’m glad you are with me. Otherwise, I’d be lost. I could never handle all of this. Thank you.

Awkwardness in the newlyweds’ bedroom. His room… her room… our room… He tells her she can decorate it any way she likes. Are you hungry? Would you like to take a shower? He just wants her to feel comfortable. Elif knows this is hard for him. Nothing has to change, this is a partnership, she says.

He goes to leave and Elif stops him, do you think we did the right thing? Will this work? He asks if she is having second thoughts. No. She just wants this to work out for everyone.

We get a flashback: This is my proposal, Azat says. I’m not suggesting a conventional marriage. [not what Elif hoped for] We won’t really be a married couple. He lays the cards on the table. I’m not in love with you, I can’t make you happy. I can’t be your husband because I love Rey…. he stops short. We would do this for our families. If you wish to protect them…. she interrupts, I am. I’m doing this to protect our families, too. I want this revenge to end. End flashback.

Herc S2 ep 3 part 3

Azat says there’s no going back. I don’t want you to be sad and cry. If we’re both on the same page, this will work. Don’t worry. Try to relax and rest. He leaves her in the room.

Melike and Nigar talk in the kitchen. Azat was sure a sneaky one. Melike says she feels bad for Elif, but… Hanife walks in… the Aslanbeys need to understand what Reyyan went through.

Azat comes back to the honeymoon suite. He sees Elif hasn’t eaten. Handan comes bearing gifts for the new bride. She asks Azat to step outside to talk to his father while she chats with Elif. He worries. Handan says this is the tradition, plus she has nothing to wear. He warns his mother not to do anything to bother Elif.

Handan welcomes Elif to the family. I have these gifts and more for my DIL. I’ve been saving for Azat’s future wife since he was born. They are the typical gifts---nightgown, slippers, towels. Tomorrow we can go out and buy whatever you need. Azat is satisfied that Handan means no harm, so he leaves.

Handan tells Elif they will have a mother-daughter talk. She sees the way Elif looks at Azat. Don’t deny it. I’ve been in love, too. I know what it is and what it does to you. I know how it can hurt.

Cihan tells Azat he knows this is not a love marriage. He did it to save Reyyan and protect the family. It was a noble sacrifice, he tells his son.

Handan tells Elif, if your grandmother finds out the marriage isn’t real, she will do all she can to take you from here. But if you make it seem the marriage is real, everything will change. Your grandma won’t touch Azat or anyone in our family, not even Reyyan.

Cihan is telling Azat the same thing outside. What you do behind closed doors is your business but out here you must be husband and wife.

ReyMir return to their room. Miran complains they got one day of peace and tranquility. That was yesterday. We waited so long to sleep in this bed. We paid a high price to be together, he says, to talk and share a smile. But there’s always a new challenge. Will the suffering never end?

Reyyan says love took root in our hearts despite the suffering. It formed the bond between us. Everybody has problems, she tells him. Yeah, but they get to catch their breath, he responds. All I feel is crushed. When I walk out the door I ask what new misfortune awaits.

He looks out the window. It’s the middle of the night everyone sleeps in their homes. What about us? Every time I try to build a new life, I stumble. I’m sick of it. [I am,too, and it’s only the 3rd ep of season two] I want to start being happy with my great love. Rey tells him I will always be with you.

I know he replies, you always try to calm me. You always try to comfort me. I don’t want us to carry this burden on our shoulders. All I want is to wake up one day with my wife and walk out with happy faces. To hear a good morning that isn’t a dig. How can you endure a life in which “good morning” is a luxury? Rey answers, I can withstand anything when I’m with you. Why must we withstand, Miran asks.

How did you think it would be, she asks? He replies, I’d wake up before you and kiss you at the end of your nose… like this. I’d ask Esma to make us a special breakfast to eat in our room. Then we’d go out shopping. Then go to the hotel and eat dinner under the stars. After, we would dance. You and I have only danced once until now.

What’s stopping us? We don’t need to go anywhere to do it. Reyyan plays some music. They dance. I wish we could stay like this forever, Miran tells her. [it would make recapping easier] I don’t know why they cut the Turkish song to play the Spanish theme, oh well…. They kiss. Will this be their moment?

Herc S2 ep 3 part 4

Turkish song resumes. Elif looks at her gifts and we see Azat in another room in the dark fiddling with his wedding ring.

We hear Elif’s inner voice: Maybe my dream will come true. Maybe you will love me one day, Azat. Maybe the fate that brought Miran and Reyyan together will bring us together, too.

ReyMir went to bed with all their clothes on. He kisses her lightly on the forehead. He gets up and starts to take her boots off when he hears Azize shout for Firat.

Azize has assembled her troops on the patio. We are ready to leave, she says, I don’t care what happens. I’m not coming back without my granddaughter.

Miran confronts Azize. She tells him she’s going to rescue Elif. Like this? No. Azize says she doesn’t owe him any explanations. Elif won’t suffer the consequences of this sick passion of yours.

Miran says don’t send your men. Let me go. I will bring Elif back and no one will get hurt. Azize accuses him of forgetting about the revenge. Miran says he will get Elif and the day for revenge will come. I haven’t forgotten. But the day I do it and against whom I do it is my decision. Ok, Azize says, don’t comeback without your cousin.

Miran tells Firat to stay behind. He’s fixing this himself. Gonul thinks Miran will need help. Miran says an Aslanbey should stay behind and protect the women. He looks at Azize, everyone under this roof is an Aslanbey, right grandmother? [Gonul looks pleased Miran said this.] Yes, but we are missing one, she replies. Don’t come back without her.

Sukran comes out. What’s going on? Why all these men? Where are you going? He assures Good Grannie that it’s nothing. She’s worried. He leaves.

Sukran approaches Azize. Where did you send my grandson at this hour? MYOB, Azize replies. Sukran says this is her business. Where did you send him? Since you want to know, he went to the Sadoglus to get my granddaughter. Sukran loses it. She shouts for Reyyan. Reyyan wakes, hears Sukran shouting for her and runs out.

Run, run! Miran went to bring Elif back! Sukran cries. Azize blocks Reyyan’s way. You won’t stop him this time. You won’t cloud his mind. Rey says Azize is the one contaminating his mind. What if Miran dies? What if he becomes a murderer? Don’t you care? Rey addresses everyone, he is your family. But everyone in this house is scared of you (Azize). You are all a bunch of cowards. You hold back because of fear.

dondi356

Herc S2 ep 3 part 5

Rey is defiant, I’m about to finally change things here. I won’t let Miran sacrifice himself for you. I won’t let you drag him into your darkness. Rey charges for the door. The men try to stop her, but another man stops them. No one is to touch, Reyyan, he orders.

What do you think you are doing, Firat asks. Azize slaps the man. Miran ordered him to protect Reyyan. You can punish me, he says, but I can’t disobey him. Azize sends Firat to intercept Reyyan. Rey begs Firat to let her go. She has to stop Miran before he does something crazy. What will he do?

Miran has made it into the Sadoglu konak. He sees Hanife waiting. He remembers her from when he caught her meeting with Azize at the old house. She tells him Azat is sleeping downstairs and he is not with Elif. She’s alone. Be careful.

Miran sneaks into the room waking Elif. She thinks it’s Azat and very surprised to see Miran. Elif, we are leaving. She’s not going. He tells her he has to get her away from that man. I’m not going, she says. Miran threatens, if you don’t want anyone to get hurt, come with me. He grabs her. Don’t cause a tragedy. Don’t force me to use my gun. He takes her out of the mansion.

Elif tries to talk him out of it. Remember when Azat came to get Reyyan? You said “Reyyan is my wife”. Well, I’m Azat’s wife. Don’t drag me back into that hell. Miran says that’s her mistake. You don’t love Azat, you’re doing it to escape from home. You don’t have to live there if you don’t want to. But don’t ruin your life over some confusion. Elif says she really is in love with Azat.

Azat goes to the room and sees Elif is missing.

Elif gets into Miran’s car and Firat and Rey drive up. Rey jumps out and runs into the mansion. She meets Azat and tells him, Miran took her. Azat hisses, I’ll kill him! and he heads outside.

There is a confrontation between Azat, Miran and Firat. Guns are drawn. Rey begs, please don’t do this.

And we are out.

I had forgotten how annoying Miran and his moods are, especially when you have to do the recapping. I would have dumped his ass a long time ago if I were Reyyan. Too much work.

dondi356, wow, you are watching 5 dizis and recapping two! So impressive, just like this fabulous recap! “Me”-ran, haahaahaa!! Yes! It was all about him last night in nearly every convo with Reyyan. Miran is still in need of a good deprogramming.

ReyMir are good alone and away from that konak. They should take Good Grannie far away.

Poor Elif, she has gone from one bad situation to another. I really hope Azat can learn to love her. He needs to give up on Reyyan already. At least Hazar was kind to her. He earned a few points back on my list.

We were due for another gun drawing scene. Loved the snark dondi356! Thank you for recap.

Fatmagul

Thanks for reading and commenting, Darcy and Susanlynn.

About the creepiness: It was a brief feeling. I’ve seen this show a few times now. But this time those window scenes reminded me of another character that Engin played, someone who developed a sick, obsessive love. What does it take for longing to turn into obsession? Anyway, Kerim Ilgaz is a much different character than Mustafa Bulut in “Bir Bulut Olsam”.

Alcohol is an issue for Fatma, and she can’t tolerate Kerim drinking anything at all. I didn’t get the idea that Kerim was drunk. I just think the closeness was too much too soon for Fatma, as you said Darcy. It’s one step forward and two steps back for them.

Regarding Munir and Resat: It did seem like Munir and Resat enjoyed themselves. I think they were tickled by their own “cleverness”, taking care of three birds with one stone.

The initial intent was to keep all parties separated with the idea life could go on in some fashion and that all would be forgotten in time. I think they worried if Kerim hung around, his conscience might get to him, and he would squeal. The last thing they would want would be for Kerim to fall for Fatma. Too late. Kerim was attracted to Fatma from the first time he saw her.

After Munir was threatened by Mustafa, he thought that by keeping him close and well paid it would bring him under control. We see how well that worked out.

Remember that Mukaddes is in on this deal, too. She holds some cards, too. The Yasarans need to keep the Ketencis safe from Mustafa.

Vural is the weakest link now.

Yes, Susanlynn, Muka had no idea Kerim was steps away from leaving. Fatma, Kerim and Meryem did a good job of keeping that secret. And I agree with the symbolism of the shed.

dondi356, I'm in awe of your seemingly infinite ability to produce superb recaps of multiple dizis at once. This one, for example. I enjoyed it considerably more than I enjoyed the actual episode. Your recap had the advantage of being filled with lots of great, on-target snark. This made the frustrating episode more enjoyable.

So yes, Miran has learned a lot since the start of Season 1, but he still is somewhat torn, as well as prone to out-of-control rages. I'm surprised he doesn't have a perpetually sore throat.

Reyyan, on the other hand, seems to have become immensely sensible and wise. Somehow, far from destroying her, all she has been through has made her stronger, more confident, and more mature. That seemed evident last night as she tried to talk sense to Miran, as well as in her confrontations with Azize. I'd love to see some of Reyyan's strength rub off on Elif.

I can't imagine what's going to happen with Elif. I can't imagine her remaining sane if she has to go back to live in the Aslanbey zoo. But if by some miracle Elif is able to remain with Azat at the Sadoglu konak, Azize will almost surely try to wage a devastating attack. But how could she do that without endangering her beloved granddaughter?

I guess right now the question is how the standoff that ended episode 3 will be resolved. In spite of (or perhaps because of) the fact that Miran, Firat, and Azat are pointing guns at each other, I doubt anyone will be shot. But I can't imagine who will back down and where Elif will wind up.

Again, many thanks, dondi356, for this marvellous recap.

Fatmagul

Dondi, I didn't type that Kerim was drunk, that was autocorrect's input. I typed drank. Ie. 'Would it have been better if Kerim hadn't drank?' I agree he wasn't drunk, Muka took care of that role.

Fatmagul

Thank you, dondi356.

To the point of an outsider looking in. When Fatmagul was taking out the textbooks, the whole family came into the living room: Meryem, Murat, Rahmi, Mukaddes. Kerim was passing by and stopped at the living room door and listened to the conversation. Then Fatmagul noticed him standing and with her eyes and head gesture showed "What are you doing here?" Kerim stopped smiling and said he was going to wash his hands.

"Have you wondered what they call a turkey in Turkey? It’s “hindi” - I learn all kinds of things. :)

Thanks dondi356 for the songs. A variety: party music, romantic songs. Four songs! A feast.

Nice scene between Fatmagul and Meryem in the restroom when they were getting pretty for the party. Meryem suggested letting the hair out and Fatmagul smiled and changed it from full ponytail to half ponytail. Then Fatmagul gave Meryem a gift she made.

Why did Fatmagul become so upset when she was outed that she kept the letter? The violation of privacy, that Muka took it, read it, and told Kerim about it was some of it. But I think mostly she was upset with herself for showing a weakness, a crack in the wall of her rejection of Kerim. We have seen her read the letter at least three times. The lines that pulled her heartstrings are now firmly in her memory even if the latter has burned.

Hercai

Dondi, thank you . Well, New season . Same guns.

I guess Azat will fall in love with Elif by the finale ,but there will be a lot of lying and crying before that happens . I have noticed that in Turkey, the whole family calls the bride "their bride." It seems that you marry the whole family . Also, the family seems to set the new couple up for their married life by buying certain things for them. In the U.S, we have showers for this purpose , and our friends and relatives buy things for the couple's new home.

Miran and Reyyan are off the floor and chair and into the bed , but they keep their clothes on. Why ?

herc

Thanks so much for the terrific recap, dondi. Like Juanita I am in awe of your recapping skills.

You said it! Miran whines. Miran whined practically the whole episode. He slightly remembers what he did to Reyyan in abandoning her. But he fully remembers every difficulty HE'S ever had and the lack of love in his upbringing. Way too much of Reyyan wheedling him to be a better person last night. And, of course, he bends to Azize's will once again.

I saw a much nicer side of Handan last night. She seems determined to make Elif welcome and to be affectionate with the girl. This could be on its way to a decent life for Elif if it were not for Miran's inability to resist Azize. I suppose the case could be made that he went there to prevent bloodshed with all those guys going with Azize, but still, I'm so furious with him. He doesn't listen to what Elif tells him. What he deserved was for her to scream loudly, bringing down Nasuh, Cihan, and the house guards on his head.

Susanlynn, I loved "new season...same guns"!

fatmagul

Thanks so much, dondi, for all your heroic recaps. It being Friday night and being a night owl my whole life, I did watch Friday morning's two-hour episode at 11:30PM.

But I am on my last nerve here. It doesn't look like there's an end anytime soon to Muka's bullying of that claustrophobic household. I had heard raves about the dizi. I also thought Hercai would not return until 2022. I don't think I can stand much more Muka.

So far the only bright spot is Meryem, a joy to witness in every scene.

The ricos are also disgusting, especially Munir. His baiting Kerim with the idea that Erdo would come there for Fatma was awful. And...it seemed counter-intuitive. Doesn't he want Kerim to leave? He's giving him a reason to stay. I kind of think Erdo would like another shot at Fatmagul. Hopefully that doesn't happen.

Herc

Stellar recap dondi356, and I couldn’t agree with you more! Dump that bipolar whine-baby, cause he needs a reality check! Tell him to look you up when he’s successfully put the past where it belongs and when Azize can no longer pull those puppet strings of his! Every time he tries to get fierce with Azize, I just crack up! She’s got him so turned inside out he can’t see the forest, the trees, the grass, the lake——-nada!! He’s like the 3 blind mice all wrapped up in one, and Azize is the cheese—— the BIG cheese! So glad Reyyan’s ain’t afraid of her and can see right through her manipulations and lies. Cause the rest of the roaches act like they’ve been sprayed with a can of raid when it comes to Azize, lol.

I, still, really do love to see Miran and Reyyan when they’re one on one. It’s like no one and nothing exists but the two of them. Miran looks so enchanted with her, and Reyyan has such a dumb smile on her face it can’t be anything but love! And while I love her support of Miran, she’s getting close to that martyr syndrome thing that can become a turn off. Take the pacifier out his mouth and stop babysitting him! Cause if you don’t, he’s gonna remain Azize’s man, not yours!

I feel bad for both Azat and Elif. They’re two very kind hearted souls who are trying to make the situation better all around for everyone. But I can’t see that happening. I see no sparks between the two and I think they’re doomed to be friends at the most. I also think when Elif realizes this, her fragile heart won’t be able to withstand it. Elif needs the kinda guy who loves her from the door…..I also gave Handan a thumbs up for her seemingly sincere olive branch to Elif…….

But those two old coots, Nasuh and Azize had me rolling with their telephone conversation, lol! They are a match made in revenge hell! Can’t wait to see what plays out between them two!

Great recap dondi356! Glad Herc is back where it belongs! But poor Parientes ……seems it didn’t stand a chance…..

Fatmagül

Darcy, no worries, I realized that was auto correct. My comment was to show that alcohol, especially when she sees Kerim drinking, reminds her of that night. Kerim doesn’t even need to be noticeably drunk. And obviously, she can't stand being near him. I should have been clearer.

Lucio, it’s good that you mentioned that scene with Fatma’s textbooks. Those little interactions are important to keep in mind. I’m glad you share an appreciation of the Turkish songs. Soundtracks, whether generic instrumental or additional artist vocals, add so much to a show and I think they are too often overlooked in their importance. I hate when they replace/edit the original songs. I like what you said about Fatma and the letter. How embarrassing for her.

novelera, I can’t blame you for being fed up with Muka. She is the “Yaren” of this story. It’s hard to watch her even knowing what happens. I realize that two hours is a huge commitment. I’ll be sorry to lose your “voice” on the patio. I agree that Munir’s plan seems counter-intuitive, but I think he feels that this will keep any potential trouble in check or somehow eliminate the troublemakers. It’s definitely high risk.

dondi356

Thanks, everyone. Love reading the comments.

VVS, thank goodness that 3 of my dizis are only once a week.

Miran’s constant whining is so hard for me to take as well as Reyyan’s constant “wheedling”. novelera, I could cut, paste, and quote your entire paragraph. Juanita, yes Miran has learned, but not enough to deprogram yet. I don’t want to wish ill on the actor, but an occasional mild sore throat to shut him up?

I’m finding it hard to care about the lead couple. I don’t feel the chemistry between the actors that I have felt in other great dizis. I have not seen Ebru or Akin in anything else. I keep hoping for a change. I agree with VVS, that ReyMir are much better alone and away from the konaks.

What holds my interest? All our tasty crockpot theories. The especially villainous villains: Azize, Nasuh, Yaren. What generated this crazy revenge? What is the relationship between Azize and Nasuh? The impending marriage of the two psychos, Yaren and Harun. The mystery of the missing Aslanbey child. The story of Elif and Azat.

I think we are all worried about Elif. I hope that she and Azat have an HEA but I really think they might be headed for tragedy. This is a dizi after all, and with 69 eps there must be at least one great tragedy.

dondi356

Herc

Oops forgot to add: Carmella, I love your oh so snarky comments! “the rest of the roaches act like they’ve been sprayed with a can of raid when it comes to Azize” LOL. Nasuh call to Azize was priceless.

Handan might be nice to Elif now, but she tends to go which ever way the wind blows. I wonder how supportive she will remain. I think Hazar is more sincere in his support. And I think Zehra will be, too. I worry about Yaren torturing this poor girl. They better marry her off fast!

Nice that we had a Yaren and Zehra free ep.

Fatmagul

Kerim got his copy of the letter about divorce to replace the one Muk found under Fatmagul's mattress and ripped up so that fatmagul wouldn't know that Muk had found her hiding place. I couldn't understand why Muk took that one and put it in her drawer. Can you imagine living with someone like Muk who constantly invaded your privacy? Awful. Poor Fatmagul.

I won't be able to do a recap for today's show. I cant watch until late tonight. So feel free to comment.
