La herencia, #38 Tuesday "Portrait of a Lady, sketches of a Tramp"

Pedro is looking at his phone mysteriously. Is he the one sending the threats to Juan?

Juan runs to Sara’s office to ask her to leave the company and his life. She takes it all wrong, thinks this is about their break-up, but he’s actually scared for her life. Oh, misunderstandings, the backbone of every good novela love story.  They start quarrelling about the company and who has more power to decide stuff… same old, same old. Eventually Sara accidentally hits Juan over the head with the phone so bad there is blood. Then she fusses over him about cleaning his wound, but they get awfully close in the process. Surprinsingly, I find the scene pretty good, the angst might make these two a better couple. Juan says it's no big deal, Sara wants him to see the company doctor. Where is the speech about violence in the work place? Imagine if Juan had hit Sara by accident?

A doctor checks Juan’s forehead, it’s no big deal. However he postpones the meeting he had and plans to go home.

Deb is trying to remove Catalina’s portrait from the living room, saying Juan OKed it. As if! Modesto forbids it, over his dead body, he proclaims! Deb's eyes say: “Challenge accepted!”

People in town gossip about Pedro, Corni and Bea’s situation. Corni and Pedro get into a fight, but they stop when they see the two guys who attacked Simon. They both seem to know them, even Tadeo notices. Corni tells Tadeo he loves him, Pedro forbids Corni to ever come close to his son.

Juan, Lucas and Alondra get Juli to the house. Deb thinks the “muribunda” might lose the baby and have her plans ruined. She really cracks me up sometimes. Alondra calls Rosa to let her know what has happened, she says Mateo is to blame, which upsets Lucas. Juli is awake and whining about her bebe.

Juan’s assistant, Bruno, tells Sara the meeting is annulled, because Juan got hit in the head. Sara pretends not to know what happened. Juan is on the phone with Lucas, he tells him to take Juli to the hospital if necessary. He’s going home. The doc examines Juli and she’s fine, she just needs to rest in her room. Modesto says her room is cold (huh?), so Mateo offers his own bedroom for Juli. Will he later offer to warm up her cold feet between the sheets?

Jess wants to make out with her husband, but Bryan needs to leave for work. Jess thinks they don’t need to work anymore, their parents will take care of everything, but Bryan disagrees. Prospi interrupts them because he wants to talk. He tells them the story about a woman he loved when he was young; they lived in his parents’ house but she was richer than he was. She always wanted more and more and eventually she left. Jess appears to be getting the message, but when Prospi says they should have their own home, she gets upset, thinks her dad is only trying to push them out because they know about Deb. Prospi makes it clear he only wants them to be happy and independent, rent something if they need to, but be by themselves, form their own family. Jess says she hates him (what?).

Deb is still insisting Catalina’s portrait has to be removed and two of the ranch hands help her do it.

Pedro and Tadeo arrive home, talking about how Pedro forgot to buy underwear for the kid. May I just say one more time that there is no way Bea would have sent her son to spend a weekend away from home without any kind of clothes? Also, if Corni is selling the house and she will be working for Sara, how long before she moves into the ranch, too?

Tadeo also reminds Pedro he has to go to the doctor’s later. It’s for his therapy, but Pedro says Simon can help, too. Tadeo is scared of Simon, so Pedro asks who has been badmouthing his brother in front of the boy?

Rosa comes to see Juli, who is in Mateo’s room. She makes a huge fuss about Juli’s “agony” and Julieta tells her she got upset because of Mateo.

Lucas asks Mateo what is going on between he and Juli and Mateo says she is the one chasing him now. He doesn’t care anymore, he wants to have a life of his own.

Pedro sees Catalina’s portrait is gone and gets into a fight with Deb. Tadeo doesn’t like it, so Pedro calls Adela to take him away. Then they continue fighting and then Mateo arrives and screams at Deb, too. She says this is her daughter’s house, she is the only one who has the right to have her portrait on the wall.

Juan arrives and gets into it with Deb, too. Catalina Arango is their mom and she isbeing  very disrespectful. She and her daughter need to leave the house. Modesto intervenes to add his two cents, so Deb says that he has changed, since he used to be her ally back in the day: he knew about Sara and he also knows about Simon, who was aware of Sara’s existence, too!

When confronted by the brothers, Modesto has to admit he knew about Sara but he was never Deb’s ally. Pedro threatens Modesto, but Juan stops him and then goes to see Julieta, after asking Modesto to put Catalina’s portrait back where it belongs. Deb says she is putting Sara’s portrait on the wall!

Irma asks Paloma to be present at the wedding and Paloma doesn’t mind. She asks her how her life has been and Irma says she has two younger kids and is married to a good man. She’d love for Paloma to know them. She also explains that life with Sal wasn’t easy, he was very jealous and hit her – when she gets married she will see that married lie can be hard. Oh, boy, considering who she is marrying...

Later Irma says that Paloma looks a lot like her father. When Paloma mentions Sal’s name, Irma makes it clear she didn’t mean him. Who then, tio Modesto? Sure, Irma says, but then Simon arrives, so she leaves.

When Paloma tells Simon she wants her mom at the wedding, he doesn’t like the idea, but he will do it for her. He then tells Paloma he wants her to use his mom’s wedding dress. Paloma agrees. Simon flashes back to the day Catalina showed him her dress and told him how happy she was on her wedding day. When he gets married, his wife should wear this dress, promise? This is the best inheritance she has for him, love and happiness. Back to the present, Simon says that he only got moments of happiness from his mom, and now he wants to share them with her.

Sara asks Dante about Juan’s proposal about the inheritance. Dante explains that had Sara agreed to leave the house with the brothers' approval, it would have been as if she’d never left, so the inheritance wouldn’t have been jeopardized. Sara would like to know why Juan is planning to push her away. Dante thinks Juan is a womanizer, he's planning to steal her part of the money. He only seduced her to fool her and take her money.

Dante adds that he’s worked for the Del Monte family for a long time, there are things he can’t do, but he does feel a special affection for her and her mother. He will do his best to help her even as he works for Juan. Sara would like to know about Juan’s other businesses. Dante tells her to take care of herself, he'll see what he can do.

Juan comes to see Juli, but doesn’t say what happened to his forehead. He wants to talk to her alone, so Rosa, Lucas and Alondra have to go, after Rosa invites herself to dinner.

Alone with Juli, he tells her he got hurt in the cafeteria. She says she fainted and the doc says everything is OK, but she got scared. Juan wants a DNA test. Juli says no problem, but today she got hurt because Mateo is still harassing her. Juan says he will talk to him, but Juli would rather he didn’t. From now on this baby is the most important thing in her life. Juan wants to give the child everything he and Pedro lacked and Juli agrees.

Sara asks Bruno what is the name of the architect working for the company. What is she up to?

Lucas is upset over the portrait, too, but Modesto says it can’t be helped, Sara has rights, too. Lucas is afraid of Simon’s reaction when he finds out. HAHHAHAA!

When Lucas asks Sara about the portrait, she says she told her mom to do it. Lucas is surprised she acted like that, Sara says she has changed, she is a different person now. Even with Lucas.

Rosa and Deb talk about Catalina and Rosa’s thing with Sev. Rosa once again denies anything happened between them. Alondra comes to fetch her mom, but Rosa is planning to stick around for dinner and to take care of her daughter.

Mateo comes by his room briefly, but leaves when Juan says he’d like to talk to him in the study.

Juan asks Dante to come quickly at the house, he got another threat.

Deb tells Sara she removed Catalina’s portrait because she wants to have one of Sara on the wall. Sara says she should have asked her, then thought bubbles an apology to Catalina, saying this is something she has to do.

Sara asks what Rosa is doing here, she finds out about Juli’s problem. Juan arrives and Rosa asks about his forehead wound, but Juan says it was only an accident. Rosa thinks the house has bad chakras.

When Rosa leaves, Juan and Sara get into it over Catalina’s portrait. Sara insisist she asked her mom to remove it. Juan doesn’t care about Sara having her pictures all over the ranch, he even agreed to give her the main room, but this is going to far. He is also the owner of the ranch and if she doesn't like it, she might as well leave.

In the study, Pedro is on the phone with someone, asking them for fake bank statements on Juan’s name, about 5 Million Dollars worth of financial transactions . What is he planning now?

Dante tells Pedro he knows he is behind the threats Juan has been receiving, why is he doing this? Pedro thinks Dante will never tell Juan because it isn’t in his best interest.

Simon is very happy, he wants to talk to Juan about the wedding. He walks into the house and sees there is no portrait on the wall. He yells at Sara he will kill her and her mom, like he had warned them! Juan jumps from his chair, the wording in Simon’s threat is the same as the last bloodied note he received. “What did you say, Simon?” Juan asks in a panic.

Thanks, Adriana, the recap was great and the title was the best.

Jessica is so lazy. Time for Brayan to get a quickie divorce. Prospi gave them good advice but Jessica would have to actually DO something which is a problem.

Thanks for clarifying who those guys were in the street. I had already forgotten.

Everyone always goes to Houston for medical treatment in these Mexican novelas.

Whoopsie,Deb sure outed Modesto. He cannot seem to catch a break.

Nice for Simón that he gets to have his bride wear his mother’s wedding dress, but what does Paloma get to choose? How could she even refuse? It sounded earlier like her wedding was being planned but not by her. The men are total control freaks in this one.

I do admit that I enjoyed Sara and Deb driving the brothers crazy by removing Catalina’s portrait.

Who is sending the threats? Dante and/or Deb is/are my guess . . . For now.

Adriana, the title was perfect. The recap – excellent. “Oh, misunderstandings, the backbone of every good novela love story” was exactly right!

Pedro has been working feverishly to bring Juan to ruin. The Del Montes live in a rather provincial world. As outside enemy forces have already been vanquished (thanks Dante), it stands to reason that the whomever now wants their downfall are within their midst. I thought Juli might have been behind the threats at first. But she seems to spew her poison in person. My money is on Pedro. Although Juan has his suspicions, it is Dante whom I trust to keep Pedro in line.

“Paloma looks a lot like her father. When Paloma mentions Sal’s name, Irma makes it clear she didn’t mean him”. Subtle. Not.

Catalina’s scenes with Simon as a child are touching. He seemed sweetly solemn when she told him to have his bride wear her dress. Seeing that lovely youngster is a startling contrast to what Simon has become. Except when he is with Paloma, likely the second person he has ever truly loved. He is terrifying when roused. “Tadeo is scared of Simon”. Of course he is.

Fedora wearin’ Deb was in her glory, smiling, smirking and lording it all over the bros for taking down mama’s picture. At least Simon wiped any trace of gloating from her face.

Jarifa, Deb always does manage to get Modesto in trouble, which is so frustrating. He becomes the whipping post, once again.

Good for Prospi for telling Jess and Bryan to go out on their own. Otherwise, Rosa will start in and there will be trouble in paradise for the one couple (love Jess or not) that has been loving and true to each other since they began. Others might take note.

I’m hoping Mateo will get Juli out of his system and sober up.

Thank you for crafting this fabulous recap so quickly Adriana!!!

Diana

Thanks for the fast replies, girls! You are night owls and I'm an early bird, up at 5 nearly every morning. Z...

Jarifa, I thought that Juli was behind the attack, too, but Diana is right, she is the more "hands on" type of schemer. Now that Pedro was checking his phone right after Juan got that bloodied dagger (couldn't actually read what was written on his screen) and then Dante accused him of doing it, too, I'm sure he's behind it.
Oh, I sooo agree about Paloma not being in charge of her own wedding. The proposal was for her bitter father, her wedding is being planned by her sexagenarian uncle and she has to wear her dead MIL's 30 year-old wedding dress. What more could a girl dream of?

Diana, I like Simon with Paloma, too, but signs of future abuse are already showing. I'm curious if the show will go there or if they will redeem Simon in time for El Fin. Irma warning Paloma about married life sure sounded like a bad omen. And Simon's very bad temper is a true giveaway that in the right circumstances, he can and he will BLOW UP in a SCARY manner.

More later!

Great recap, Adriana.

“Paloma looks a lot like her father. When Paloma mentions Sal’s name, Irma makes it clear she didn’t mean him”. Subtle. Not." Lol, Diana.

At first I thought it was Juli who was sending the notes to Juan, but now I'm not sure.

I might be in the minority here, but I actually didn't like the fact that Deb and Sara removed Catalina's portrait. The boys really loved their adoptive mother and hello? The house is called Santa CATALINA.

Adriana, thanks for the amazing recap. Maybe more later.

Adriana, thanks for reminding me who was doing what for poor Paloma’s “wedding.” That info seems like it was given years ago in this novela . Paloma is like a lamb being led to the slaughter because with Simón’s twisted mind, she could become the “enemy” and on the receiving end of his wrath at the drop of a hat. Btw, I can be a night owl but am also an early bird. Every so often, I hit the wall. : )

Diana, Irma’s half-baked comment was just bizarre. How long before Paloma finds out that Severiano is her father and enters the herencia waiting game or will she? At least Paloma found out that her father Sal was not an ideal husband and also a wife beater. Severiano must have been a real charmer to have offered “solace” to all of these needy (one way or another) women.

Weirdo, poor Tadeo getting to spend weekends in that pressure cooker at Santa Catalina. Hope the kid has plenty if time outside.

Cher Adriana, merci for the excellent, speedy quick recap as we continue to bounce along with these tortured or torturing characters.

Weirdo, like you, I didn't like that smirking Deb insisted on removing the portrait of the brothers' beloved mother . Deb seems to absolute!y relish being cruel and inflicting pain on others.

The hacienda is getting crowded.

Paloma should concentrate on getting her law degree and distancing herself from all the toxic people around her who want to control her life.

OT..I watched the two hour start of " Ricos", and it is pretty interesting with some familiar faces .

Good work, Adriana.

I agree with Weirdo and Susan about the picture. I don't think Sara specifically authorized that action, but could not back down in front of the guys. I suspect I will continue to be disappointed in her if she doesn't give Deborah a real verbal slap over her most recent behavior. This is so despicable and declassee.

Jessica is acting immature because Rosa never treated her or her sisters like adults. Prospero is right: Jessica and Brayan need their own place to be free of Rosa and her interference.

Simon is looking worse with every episode. Paloma should not marry him, His latest threat on Sara's life did look suspicious to Juan and that is understandable.

And this whole superstition about the groom not seeing the bridal gown before the ceremony... does that apply to this situation or not?

More later.

Ricos

I wish I had the energy to recap this one. Nothing is like the lives of the rich and shameless.

Adriana - thank you again for another stellar recap, from your oh-so-appropriate title to this gem of a truism:
Oh, misunderstandings, the backbone of every good novela love story."

Prospi was spot on with the kids. Ay, Jessica, spoiled brat is they name. She really does not like adulting. Can that marriage be saved? Hmmm.....

If Bea moves into SC because she is homeless, and Rosa moves into SC to "take care of" Juli, before they know it half the town will be living there. At the DelMonte's expense, too! All those people to feed and clean up after.....vaya!

Run Paloma, RUNNN!!!!!

Tadeo is not the first kid to be spending a weekend without clothes packed by his mother. This I know from personal observation. Makes one wonder, right?

I was so sick of that portrait fight. All a bunch of Type A people in that house. Reminds me of Game of Thrones but without the swords, blood and gore.

I think Pedro is behind the threats on Sara's life. He is descending into his own circle of hell.

What is up with that bombshell Deb just dropped about Modesto knowing about Sara and being her ally in the past? Modesto looked very uncomfortable when she said that. Deb thinks she should be the owner of that place, not Sara.

I have been trying to imagine these characters back in the day , and all these women swirling around Sev with Modesto watching all the affairs . Was Modesto protecting Sev or Catalina? Will we find out if and how many children Sev spawned ?

Susanlynn - Modesto knew about Sara and Deb all along. Many episodes ago, Modesto told Sara that Sev was sending money on a monthly basis to support her. I think it happened when Sara mentioned their (Deb and her) money problems. Deb either pocketed it or stole it or spent it all because when Sara asked Dante, he lied and said no, that Modesto was lying. Sara is Dante and Deb's cash cow.

With this new info it will turn the brothers against Modesto, which is what Deb wants. She wants them all to go down in flames so that everything will be hers. My thoughts are that Dante would take it all from Deb if that happened.

Irma's comment to Paloma about her father was interesting. Could Modesto be her dad? Paloma looks more like him than Sal. But then, telenovelas never care about characters actually looking like they are from the same bloodline.

OT..."Ricos".... Urban, even though I don't understand the dialogue, the visual made it pretty clear what was happening . Rulli is the poor, little rich boy, and the actress playing Mariana is the poor, little poor girl. Cantu is , again, the rich dad that he has played so often . Adela Robinson is the first wife having an affair with Cantu's right handman who is in love Cantu's second wife and also sleeping with Rulli's sneaky Novia. Ha. What a first episode !!

"Ricos" sounds a lot like present tense "Herencia" which is more about the past tense. ;-)

OT...Doris, yes, it is another wild, novela ride if evil rich folks wheeling and dealing and backstabbing in a big mansion and a bigger office building . No avocados in this one . I think the family business is soup or something else in cans . There were cans of their product on the huge conference room table .

Ricos

I don't have the time or energy to recap that one because it deserves my full court press on such subjects. If nobody posts anything by this evening I might go to the Wikipedia page and post the bullet points. This series got higher ratings in Mexico than Herencia.

Let me say now that Alejandra Barros will be the same jealous crazy that she was in AQNMD a few years ago while Sebastian Rulli will be the black sheep of this family. Fabiola Guajardo (of the cheap-looking two-toned hair) was in my first outing as the voice of the rich and shamless in Pasion y Poder and will be far less likeable here.

I hate what they did to Victor Gonzales' hair, too. Loved him in La Candidata a few years ago.

I also hate the bumpkin image they gave to Mariana, but perhaps that won't last. This series has 60 episodes.

"The boys really loved their adoptive mother and hello? The house is called Santa CATALINA" made me smile Weirdo! Deb knows full well the most contentious choice to make and nails it every time!

And on Jess, "She really does not like adulting" had me laughing doris. You're so right. While Rosa does deserve part of the blame, Jess is a married woman now and has to take care of herself. I didn't realize what a child Bryan is. His mother and grandfather have table manners, what happened to him? Get a clue.

Simon is getting worse Urban. Definitely.

Diana

RICOS

Susanlynn, I hadn't intended to watch this but once I started, I was hooked.

Rulli looks as handsome as ever. Enough reason to watch in and of itself. Cantu and Robinson are gravy.

"I also hate the bumpkin image they gave to Mariana, but perhaps that won't last" could not have said it better Urban. She is playing the part as written. I am sure she will get better.

I have only a vague idea as to who everyone is and what their relationship is to each other but this looks really good.

Diana

Thank you for the fabulous recap Adriana! I haven’t watched yet and probably won’t get a chance until tomorrow, but I wanted to stop by and say I LOVE the title!!! So good!

doris, ITA that the real power is Dante and he would double cross Deb in a heartbeat.

Thanks, Adriana, another excellent recap. Everyone moving in reminds me of one of those children’s stories where the pot of rice, or whatever, never gets empty. In this, there’s always another bedroom!

I am in agreement with all that thought the portrait should remain up! I don’t like this new Sara. She should have told her mother off.

But I’m proud of Mateo for resisting Juli. Hope he can stay sober and keep it up.

I would give up my inheritance, or stay in my room, if I had to live with all that yelling!

Liz

Thanks, Adriana. Superb title.

Wierdo and everybody, I too didn't like them taking down Catalina's picture. So Sara's backing Deb to keep up her iron fist act. Sad to see Lucas disappointed in Sara after he's gone to bat for her so many times.

Irma is some prize, not. She would tell Paloma that Sal's not her father after all the years that she let Sal raise her? If she couldn't take Paloma when she ran away, she could've at least come around when she remarried to such a good man and had resources.

Tadeo is afraid of Simon? I've never seen Simon show anger around Tadeo, especially with Cornelio and Pedro taunting and snarling at each other around him all the time. He even saw Pedro shoot Cornelio. So I'm wondering if Tadeo overheard when Paloma told Bea that Simon confessed to her that he'd killed Sev.

Only Deb and Pedro realize what a skunk Dante is . Does Modesto have any idea that he is acting against the brothers ? Who will discover what he is up to ?

Liz, yes, if I had to stay in that hacienda, I would take a tray to my room at mealtimes .

Great chat, everyone, I'm finally done with this day, so I have a bit of time to jump back in.

I so agree that Irma has proven to be a disappointment. She left her daughter with a man she knew was not her father. And she managed to rebuild her life, even had other kids but never thought about contacting her again??Did she give us the reason why she is back now?

When Pedro asked Tadeo about Simon I was like: does he even know him? I mean, he was raised around the ranch, so he probably does, but they don't really have a relationship. Pedro has found the secret to parenthood: when the kid is in the way, call the help to take over for the parenting part of your life; the nerve he has blaming Cornelio for influencing Tadeo when he's brought him to live in a vipers nest.

How many bedrooms does this mega mansion have, anyway? The main bedroom now belongs to Sara. There are 5 other bedrooms for the guys, Deb's room, Juli's "freezing" room, Modesto must be sleeping downstairs in his own bedroom and who am I missing? Oh yeah, now Tadeo should get his own space, too. So far I counted 9 bedrooms upstairs.

Having everyone live in the same place reminds me of some of my favorite novelas from Argentina, where multigeneration families, their secret lovers and not so secret enemies all lived under the same roof, with a bunch of servants always spying on them and everyone keeping something from the past hidden. Maybe that's why I like La Herencia, takes me back to simpler times.

Forgot to mention that if I lived in the Del Monte household, I would not miss one single breakfast, or lunch or dinner or silly monologue with one of the several portraits decorating the walls. I guess that tells you everything you need to know about me, I love good gossip - make me a low level sirvienta, have me serve them coffee and eavesdrop on all the fighting and secret spilling and I would be set for life.

RICOS
The original was one of my first ever novelas, I still remember it vividly. I also watched two of the remakes , the Thalia one and the more recent one with Mauricio Ochman (who was then replaced). Am I missing another remake? I feel like this story has been done to death and as much as I like both leads , I can't bring myself to watch it again.
And with double episodes of Jerencia for the time being, I wouldn't exactly have the emotional energy anyway. Zzzz...

Double episodes are a challenge. While I get that a double episode estreno is a big deal it is a lot to take in without a cheat sheet or family tree chart.
