Susan, Christian Bach was also in La Patrona, Minas de Pasión's original novela. She played the main villain, Antonia Guerra and I don't think anyone can beat that acting. I still check out some LP clips. I miss that show. It was my first novela.

Highlights from the couch . . .

Hey, we have hit the half way point. It is all down hill from here!

ROGELIO/IGNACIO Rogelio has Fidel get an investigation done on Ignacio. He needs to establish that Ignacio has been doing something illegal to throw him off the executive board. They find out that Ignacio has a partner in crime Carmelo who he met while he was in prison. They dealt in identity fraud and phone extortion while behind bars and because of Ignacio, Carmelo ended up doing five more years. Fidel has a lead on where to find Carmelo and makes contact with him. Fidel explains the problems they are having with Ignacio and would like any information that Carmelo has on Ignacio being involved in illegal business dealings. Carmelo remarks that Ignacio stole from him and he has not forgotten the extra five years of prison time he did because of Ignacio. He can tell Fidel and his boss more but it is going to cost them a lot. Rogelio and Fidel meet with Carmelo and bring plenty of cash. For the first packet of cash, Carmelo tells them that Ignacio works with a hacker and that they steal credit card numbers that Ignacio uses to finance his bus company. Rogelio asks what kind of evidence does he have. For the second packet of cash, Carmelo gives him a list of all of the stolen numbers courtesy of the hacker. Rogelio takes the list of credit card numbers to the prosecutor's office where they are told that if the list is legit, Ignacio is toast. Carmelo contacts Ignacio to tell him that he has a list of all of the stolen credit card numbers. Should he turn them over to the police or sell them to the highest bidder? And by the way, his hacker Fausto is no longer working for him. He has a new boss. He sends Ignacio the numbers so he knows he is serious. He also tells Ignacio that he knows his address, where his mom lives and where his wife works. Ignacio asks what he wants. The answer is money! Carmelo will send him the amount and a credit card number he can send it to. Ignacio goes to visit the hacker. When he gets to his office, he finds that Fausto is long gone.

HONORIO talks to Rogelio about his idea for his land. He would like to turn it into a cooperative where they all could share in the profits. His people and family comes first. Rogelio says he will need to build housing and he will talk to his mother to see if the foundation might help with construction costs. Honorio gets the phone number of a cousin. The cousin says that he was in the group the other day but was unable to help him. Honorio says he is not complaining but is asking how can he help. The cousin explains that they have been thrown out of everywhere they have tried to settle and that they are dying of hunger. Honorio informs him that he thinks he has a plan that would work for all of them. He wants to tell him so he can convince the others.

ETERNAMENTE Page Two

THE BACHELOR/BACHELORETTE PARTIES Rogelio and the guys have a really fun (NOT) idea and "kidnap" Fidel and deliver him to his bachelor party after Rogelio told him the party had to be cancelled until after his wedding. Fidel is not laughing at the "joke."They are at a pool hall and do some drinking but are basically bored. No, there is no sexy woman jumping out of a cake as Paula had jokingly predicted. They decide to see what is happening at the bachelorette party. The women are having lots of fun. The men arrive just after Martine shows up and is confronted by a male stripper. She cannot help but look even though she doesn't want to.

THE WEDDING Eva and Fidel have a nice civil ceremony at a local restaurant. Before the ceremony, Paula gives Eva her mother's necklace to wear. Eva cannot get out of wearing it. The ceremony is filled with lots of humor. Before kissing the bride, Fidel asks for permission from Martina who wholeheartedly gives it to him.

THE PROPOSAL PARTY Andrea and Luis want a traditional "asking for the hand"proposal dinner/party. It is being held at Andrea's house. She wants it done now so her mother can attend. The event never really happens because of two difficult women: Vanessa and Imelda From the start, Vanessa makes inappropriate, denigrating and bizarre comments. She doesn't see what the whole point of why they are there. Then Imelda explodes when Fernando arrives late (he was with Ximena who wanted to tell him that she was ready to fight for and wait for him) and airs all of the dirty laundry of her crumbling marriage. She tells Fernando that she won't get a divorce so that he can go off with his secretary. Vanessa smirks and shortly after, everyone decides that the event is prematurely over and leaves.

IRMA/MARTINA Martina calls Irma and asks her if her bags are packed and she is ready to leave. She has already given her plenty of time. Irma tells her not so fast because she knows something about her that her sons wouldn't like. What would they think of her an old woman being involved with Gabriel and finding out that they see each other at the cabin. Martina says no worries because her kids know already. (But they don't. Gabriel tried again to convince her to tell them) Martina wants her and Ignacio out of town and the shares of her company back. The conversation ends. Irma goes berserk, remembers horrors of her life, and spreads gasoline all around the cabin. (It splashes all over maybe even on her) She breaks in with a handy dandy screwdriver in her purse and throws photos and flowers on the floor.

ETERNAMENTE Page Three

She then calls Martina. She asks her to guess where she is. She is at Martina's little love nest. She found something her lover will be interested in. Martina takes a taxi to the cabin.( In the meantime, Rogelio arrives at the house and asks Micaela where his mother is. Micaela is worried about Martina and tells him that she took a taxi somewhere. Rogelio calls the taxi company and finds out where his mother is.) Martina goes into the cabin to talk to Irma. (Didn't she smell the gasoline outside or on Irma?) Irma goes on a tirade telling how Martina ruined her life with Hipólito. Martina informs her that she denied what her son could have had from Hipólito. Irma tells her that before she poisons her son against her, they will both die here. She sets the cabin on fire. The women physically fight until they lose consciousness from the smoke. Neighbors have gathered outside and have called the fire department. Rogelio arrives. A fireman brings Irma out. Rogelio covers himself with a blanket and gets his mother out. As they load Martina into the ambulance, Gabriel appears. Half conscious, she fixes on Gabriel and tells him to never leave her. She loves him. Gabriel tells her he loves her, too. Only then does she recognize Rogelio. He is surprised.

EVERYTHING ELSE

Fernando and Ignacio commiserate about the state of their marriages. Fernando says even if Ignacio weren't his brother, he would choose him to be.

Lucas admits to his friend that he really blew it with Paula. She never wanted to replace his mother.

Ulises talks to Vale the principal of the school and agrees to go work for them, too.

Please add anything I left out.

Jarifa, thank you so much. You have truly outdone yourself!
WHAT an episode! The three VERY different parties, and the levity of the bachelorette party in contrast with the intense scenes of BSC Irma's arson and murder attempt.
Ana Bertha Espin sure can bring on the cray-cray! I remember her as Tia Rosaura in La que no Podcast amar- a very different villain than here. Irma is just insane.
Urban Anthropologist, what do you think her diagnosis would be?
Interested to see what the fallout of all of this!
Thank you again, Jarifa. I look forward to reading the comments and, of course, for tonight!

That should be La que no PODIA amar. I HATE Auto-Correct!!!!

If it hadn't been for that whole 'asking for the hand' ceremony, I'd have forgotten Luis and Andrea existed. I somehow found him more interesting when he was suffering from the unrequited love. Now it feels kind of bland?
Imelda hasn't learnt anything. She doesn't respect Fernando and had no problem showing her disdain. Now she is so desperate it's funny.
I believe Irma even told Martina that had she toldIgnacio the truth, Hipolito would have taken him and she would have been left alone. Such a strange attitude. So she was so mad at him for not leaving Martina for her that she poisoned her own son against his father and the entire family. What is so special about Hipolito that she is so obsessed with him? I might be misremembering, but at some point she mentions that Hipolito didn't come to look for her and only came to see his son. Did she get pregnant on purpose?
Ximena is willing to sacrifice way too much. If Imelda threatens him with limiting his chances to see his daughter, Fernando won't be so quick to ask for divorce. Unless they do something more original this time.
I bet Martina thinks she has the right to date whomever she wants, even if her kids will get mad. But her kids have to 'take her into account when planning theri relationships'. From a couple of things I saw, I'm not entirely convinced she will get any kind of punishment or real lesson. I'm a bit surprised she isn't meant to be 'evil' when there are so many comparatively small things she does that show what she is like. The whole Eva's secret reveal and spying on Luis...and then 'you lost your baby but who cares because you must share the news of your pregnancy'. Who is that woman that Gabriel proclaims to love? I'm pretty sure I haven't met her.

Eternamente #59/60

Gracias, Jarifa, You got all the madness in.

Irma reads like a textbook case of Borderline Personality Disorder. The symptoms are:

--- Fear of abandonment. People with BPD are often terrified of being abandoned or left alone.
--- Unstable relationships
--- Unclear or shifting self-image
--- Impulsive, self-destructive behaviors
--- Self-harm
--- Extreme emotional swings
--- Chronic feelings of emptiness
--- Explosive anger

I've also heard that people with this condition often don't have a good relationship with the truth. When Irma said that Hipolito was hers before he married Martina I doubted it. Thus far we have no proof of it. I think Hipolito cheated on Martina because he sensed that she didn't love him and had married him for his money and social standing.

Which repeated in the next generation with Fernando and Imelda, who is a malignant narcissist who can go this way herself.

We know Martina will survive this attempt on her life and this incident can't be kept a secret. So when would be a good time for Ignacio to see that letter and find out that she was the ultimate cause of his misfortune?

The parties...

It was not a good prank to "kidnap" Fidel. Anyone else might see humor in this but he is a bad candidate for such a thing. He will be a nervous wreck for the rest of his days. Kudos to Alberto Castro for his performance in that one.

The bachelorette party was fun and getting a more mature male stripper was a stroke of genius. Martina surprised us by not freaking out about this and the early attempt at covering her eyes was good for a laugh. What wasn't so genius was the guys crashing it.

The wedding itself was amusing because of both of them being so nervous they were more cursi than Eva feared Fidel would be. I definitely caught Eva's near freak-out about wearing her sister's necklace.

The proposal party was doomed from the outset. Gabriel needs to throw Vanessa out on her nasty arse.

Rogelio going in to rescue Martina caused me to flash back to a similar situation in El Privilegio de Amar wherein the protagonist was played by Cesar Evora, but that was in the last few episodes. Coincidence was that Diana Bracho played the younger version of his toxic mother.

It's high time for Paula see that Imelda is a lost cause.

Jarifa, thank you for a great report from your view from the couch.

I love Fidel. I LOLed at him trying several goodbye hand signals with the scary bad hombres ...and then he wrote them a check. This actor is bringing some fun to this tale . He and Rog were funny as they tried to protect each other as they delivered the cash.

My firemen friends would be shaking their heads at Rog going into the burning building with only a blanket covering him. Uff They wear equipment that weighs as much as they do.

I thought we might get some dancing and singing at the bachelor\bacheloette parties , but all we got was the guys jumping around in a group hug and we almost got to see some Magic Mike. Disappointing . I liked the little veil headbands the girls got to wear . Michaela tried to cover Martina's eyes, but Martina wanted to get a look at Magic Mike. Not judging.

Imelda is trying to hold on to Fernando. I dont think you can refuse to divorce someone . Can you ?

The actress playing Vanessa is bringing her bored ,nasty personna.

OT. Weirdo, I have never seen La Patrona. What year was it shown? I started watching telenovlas about 16 years ago . It was like entering a whole new fantasy world ! I am looking forward to " Minas." The trailers I have watched looked good and had many familiar faces , including Oswaldo.

Eternamente

Thanks again Jarifa for your fantastic notes from the couch!

Kidnapping Fidel for his bachelor party might have been a bad joke character wise, but it was a pretty cool trick filming wise. I was so nervous for him the whole time he was with the bad guys, and then pleasantly relieved, and then boom, he's taken and it's commercial break!!! So much anxiety just to end up at a boring bachelor party! LOL They should have brought the excitement after that!!!

I agree with this: 'Ana Bertha Espin sure can bring on the cray-cray!' Wow!!! I was actually worried for Martina when she called her after trashing the cabin, I was like 'don't go, don't go', but she did, and in a taxi too!!! So fancy! hehe

I don't think Martina is evil. Controlling yes, and unpleasant definitely but not evil. I also think we're headed down redemption road with her. She's softening already, when Paula invited her to the bachelorette party and she asks if it was a dignified event and Paula said not exactly, all she said was I don't think it's for me. The Martina we met day 1 would have railed and forbidden it since it's improper for any daughter-in-law of hers to attend such a scandal much less organize it!!! I got a chuckle out of both Ceceila and Eva protesting Martina's invitation and hoping she won't accept.

Eternamente

Darcy, maybe by the end of this story Martina will be copying Paula's hippy wardrobe, wearing love beads and sandals , and telling people to call her " Marty." Butterflies are free. Her boys will be shocked. Will she and her teen love Gabriel get married ? Will she ask for a Magic Mike at her bachelorette party ? Who knows ?

Jarifa,

You vividly brought all of startling and very enjoyable events to life! Amidst the horrors of the fire (rescues mercifully successful) there was much to smile about and enjoy. Excellent job as always!

Best moment of the night was Martina’s shock (and interested awe) at the bachelorette party, removing Micaela’s hands from her eyes wanting to see the stripper! I couldn’t believe the men arrived to ruin what would have been a fabulous and fun party! This could have been a great side story too bad they nipped it in the bud just as it started. I wanted to see “some Magic Mike” too Susan…

Next best moment was “Before kissing the bride, Fidel asks for permission from Martina who wholeheartedly gives it to him”. The wedding was short and sweet and I savored every too short second. Carrying Eva over the threshold proved to be harder than it should. I enjoy the heartfelt emotions and genuine love between the brothers and the couples (Irma and Fernando aside of course 😊)

I almost jumped out of my chair when Fidel got “abducted”!

Instead of declaring her love for Fernando and wanting to fight for him, why didn’t Ximena tell him her brother is going to kill her? What is she thinking? Oh wait, she isn’t!

Darcy, Martina is definitely softening although it will still be a loooong thaw! I look forward to see how she is going to tell her sons about her romance…

Vanessa is such a beyotch.

Diana

Eternamente

Thanks, Jarifa, love reading your notes in the morning. It’s a great replay of the whole show.

I was pretty unsure of what they were doing with the bad guys so thanks for clearing that up. Ignacio is the real bad guy here and I hope the brothers don’t forgive him and welcome him into the family. He’s hiding a big part of himself from his therapist, so will never get the help he needs. Cecilia needs to leave him. I always think she has, but apparently she takes breaks from him and then goes back.

We’re sure Martina survives the fire but what about Irma. If we’re only half way through Ignacio really can’t find out his father’s intentions yet. But Martina has to tell what happened, surely the fire department will investigate and discover it was arson.

I felt sorry for both families at the dinner party. Imelda is an embarrassment to the family. How can she not see how she is! And Vanessa is right there with her. I missed a lot of what she said but it looked like she couldn’t even accept a gift graciously.

Tonight should be another good one!

Liz

Eternamente

Liz, this is the signature style of the actress playing Vanessa ...smirks and nasty comments and causing problems for everyone in her orbit. She always looks like the cat who swallowed the canary . I think Gabriel told her to " shut up" A couple times. When I look at the poor guy, I imagine he is thinking " How did I ever get involved with this chick and why is she back?" Adiana looks so embarrassed around her. I am surorised that Martina hasn't out her in her place. Is Vanessa going to have a bigger role in the story ? Poor Marco handed Vanessa that vase And looked embarrassed when she didn't just automatically graciously accept it . She is cut from the same cloth as Imelda.

I am always amazed that people think that they can get what they want by yelling. QTH??? I feel very sorry for her poor baby .

Susan, La Patrona aired in 2013, just as the decade of glory at Telemundo was reaching its end.
Christian Bach reveled in her role of arch-villain Antonia Guerra. Previously of course she was the star of so many now-legendary telenovelas in her youth before moving on to producing some classic telenovelas (there will never be another Cañaveral de pasiones) with her equally famos husband, and then moving to TV Azteca and finally Telemundo. We lost her a few years ago at the too-young age of 59.

I am looking forward to Minas, but have my doubts. The producer took one of the most successful and entertaining, literally HISTORY-making Portuguese telenovelas of all time ('Meu Amor') and managed to turn it into an admittedly well-produced boring snooze-fest, in spite of the best efforts of its cast.

La Patrona is itself a remake of a very successful Venezuelan telenovela. This is a story of excess that lives and dies on its villains and its heroine. And... looking at its Mexican timeslot and with the Producers past track record, I am doubtful this will be as epic as La Patrona was, and as La Duena (the Venezuelan original) was. This is a 9 pm telenovela story, not a 6:30 pm one.

Hopefully I am wrong. But it is a story that warrants rising above mediocrity, which is exactly what this producer gave us in his last attempt, when he took the first Portuguese telenovela to gain International acclaim and recognition (and an Emmy award) and reduced it to a nice-looking nothing... I hope that this time he will bring his "A" game and provide us with more than just a nice looking, well-produced package that in the end contains nothing.

But I WILL be watching. And hoping. :-)

I DO feel for Ignacio. I know he is supposed to be the villain here, but he grew up without his real father, with a step-father that tortured and abused him constantly (and that he was only able to be freed from by killing the man), and a mother who endured the abuse and then, when she didn't have to anymore, had as her only mission in life to sow seeds and bitterness in her son so that she can utilize him to extract some crazy revenge... and who we now KNOW is deeply unhinged, unstable, and dangerous herself (and probably always has been).

My GOD! i doubt the boy/man has never known a moment of peace or ANY kind of healthiness or normalcy in his entire LIFE!

Is it any WONDER his treatmemt of Cecelia??? She brings a goodness and a NORMALCY to the table that Ignacio has never, and maybe CAN ever know, nor understand, nor know how to deal with!

Talk about "the sins of the father/mother..." Irma's actions have scarred her son, perhaps irrepairably. He is now toxic to everyone he touches.
Perhaps this was Irma's goal all along...

But I can't recall a novela that has a more justifiably tortured and complex villain, as well as one who arises my pity so much. There can BE no better example of "damaged goods" than Ignacio.

I wonder what is going to happen now. They are BOUND to discover that Irma set the fire. This is arson and attempted murder. What will he do?? What will SHE do??

I can't wait to find out.

Enternamente

I forgot to add earlier, Fernando all but admitted to his 'bro' Ignacio that he raped Imelda!!! That was not a good idea! It's also surprising that he can bring himself to so easily admit what he did.

OT

Anonymous, I could copy-past your whole comment! I loved La Patrona. I also have serious doubts regarding Minas, but I'll watch it exactly because I am negatively prejudiced towards it.

ETERNAMENTE

My favorite scene was Martina in the ambulance who only had eyes for Gabriel making Rogelio feeling oddly left out. He better not start criticizing her like Marco because it is none of his business either.

Thanks for stopping by and adding more info from the episode as well as your own opinions.

Anon 2:38AM, glad you enjoyed the recap. Yes, I do remember Ana Berta Espín from "La que no podía amar" crawling on the floor as she was being dragged by somebody's leg. She was wonderfully crazy in that novela, too.

waterlily, so true about Imelda. "Imelda hasn't learnt anything. She doesn't respect Fernando and had no problem showing her disdain. Now she is so desperate it's funny." Every time she insists she has changed it only takes a few seconds before she is blaming everyone else for her situation one more time. She cannot give up being a victim.

Urban, "The bachelorette party was fun and getting a more mature male stripper was a stroke of genius. Martina surprised us by not freaking out about this and the early attempt at covering her eyes was good for a laugh. What wasn't so genius was the guys crashing it. " Yes, it didn't seem original either. Haven't we seen this before in novela land? Men that just cannot entertain themselves without the women. Anyway, I wish they wouldhave left more of the party and wedding scenes intact but then they had to get to 44 minutes. : (

Susan, Alfredo Gatica (Fidel) is showing a whole other side of his acting talents in this one. "He (Fidel) and Rog were funny as they tried to protect each other as they delivered the cash." That was hilarious. I thought Rogelio was going to fall over if not for Fidel pulling him back. I love physical comedy.

Darcy, I so agree with "I don't think Martina is evil. Controlling yes, and unpleasant definitely but not evil. I also think we're headed down redemption road with her. She's softening already, when Paula invited her to the bachelorette party and she asks if it was a dignified event and Paula said not exactly, all she said was I don't think it's for me." She also didn't get all bent out of shape about Paula teasing her about getting married and admitted to Gabriel that she was wrong about Paula. As for Fernando, thank you for including that" Fernando all but admitted to his 'bro' Ignacio that he raped Imelda!!!" He sure did. Ignacio understood what he meant.

Diana, Good one: "Instead of declaring her love for Fernando and wanting to fight for him, why didn’t Ximena tell him her brother is going to kill her? What is she thinking? Oh wait, she isn’t" Nope, for so many of these characters all I can say is that the hormones are running high and logic is on the back burner. "Best moment of the night was Martina’s shock (and interested awe) at the bachelorette party, removing Micaela’s hands from her eyes wanting to see the stripper! " Martina might be old but she ins't dead.

Liz, that whole section about Ignacio's crimes was messy. Excellent take on Ignacio. "He’s hiding a big part of himself from his therapist, so will never get the help he needs. Cecilia needs to leave him. I always think she has, but apparently she takes breaks from him and then goes back." Yes, I thought that Cecilia said she was done with him, too, a couple of episodes ago but there they were at the wedding and after.

ANON 11:12, "But I can't recall a novela that has a more justifiably tortured and complex villain, as well as one who arises my pity so much. There can BE no better example of "damaged goods" than Ignacio. " So true. I am finding his character to be one of the most interesting and the most tragic. What a waste of a human being!

What great comments! I should probably add my name- I am the Anon from before. :-)

My name is Jaime. Long time fan and lurker to this site. New to commenting!

Jarifa, you have been so excellent in being the nucleus for us all with this telenovela, which surprises me with how much I am enjoying it. Thank you for recaps and to everyone else watching, for your comments.
Now I understand why you all call them "patios", where we can sit and dish and enjoy ourselves! :-)

At this point, I don't think there can be any hope for redemption as long as Irma is alive. She just will not EVER allow it, and he is too tied to her to be able to become a free man on his own.

I do not think he has the strength nor the guts (nor perhaps even the desire) to introduce Irma's face to some of that Patenten telenovela "intensive pillow therapy" but really, at this point in time I think it would be the best thing both for him AND her AND everyone else, if she is not going treated for her obvious Psychoses. She is a threat to everyone now, right?
(By the way... when WAS the last time we saw a good pillow smothering in a story?? In the telenovelas I watched growing up, they happened all the time, but they don't seem to happen much anymore!)

Thanks, Jarifa.

I feel like Uni took scissors to Magic Mike's act. What a shame, but nice to see Martina as a good sport.

Irma exhausts me. Ana Bertha Espin is bringing the CRAY-CRAY.

Jaime, thank you for letting us know who you are. Welcome to the patio! We are a friendly group. Glad you are enjoying the blog.

Niecie, it seems like those magical scissors were slicing and dicing all the entertaining fun parts. Martina is coming along . .. slowly. ; )

OT....Hi, Jaime. Welcome . Glad you are joining in on the conversations .

Tierra
If anyone is watching Tierra, perhaps you could answer a few question because I get lost in some of the dialogue.

In the beginning of Thursday's episode, Marcos grabbed this woman and pushed her up against a pillar before Remedios intervened. What was he saying to her?

Why was the owner of this business giving Adrianna and her sidekick two packets of money?
what did Adrianna say to Marcos when she gave him the envelopes, and what was Adrianna say to her sidekick after they left Marcos' presence and seemed to splitting up some money?

thanks
Lester

Highlights of the lowlights from the couch . . . Rogelio made these episodes very tedious

AFTERMATH OF THE FIRE Martina and Irma end up in the hospital for smoke inhalation. Martina is out of danger and will be sent hone after a night of observation while Irma ends up in the intensive care unit with a low oxygenation level and hypertension. The doctor doesn't know if she will make it or not.

The next day, Gabriel and Andrea stop by the house. Paula manages to sneak Gabriel in to see Martina without anyone knowing by supposedly getting him a better cellphone signal in the house. Martina tells him that Irma tried to kill them. It was all about a letter that she had that proved that Ignacio wanted to recognize Ignacio as his son. Gabriel encourages Martina to tell the truth to the police. She is not going to do that because then she would have to testify and that would ruin her reputation.

ROGELIO turns into a mad dog with a bone as he questions his mother over and over again about what happened. He was obnoxious. I didn't include all of his "questioning." He is aggravated because of what Martina said to Gabriel about "loving him" when she was getting loaded into ambulance and that she was at his cabin. Gabriel tells Rogelio he has no idea why she was there. He asks him not to say anything about his relationship with Martina to his brothers. Martina wants to tell them herself. Rogelio tells Fidel that he wants Gabriel investigated. He keeps asking her the same questions again and again and she isn't talking.

At one point, the rest of the family arrives to see how Martina is doing and soon she is being peppered by countless questions on what happened and comments about what she should have /could have done. She only says that Irma wanted to meet and talk to her about something important. Suddenly there was a fire and that is all she remembers. Paula tells the family they sound like they are interrogating a criminal and that Martina needs to rest. Paula starts to become her protector from these questioning assaults.

Rogelio asks Gabriel if he knew why Martina and Irma were there. Gabriel has no idea. Rogelio oversteps his bounds and tells Gabriel he doesn't want to see him near his mother. Gabriel tells him that is up to his mother not him. Rogelio wants to know how Gabriel could come to his house and talk to him that way. Gabriel asks what way? Gabriel admits the he has loved Martine his whole life and he has no Intentions of giving her up. Rogelio tries to interrogate his mother one more time but she is not talking. Paula tries to convince Rogelio that it is not time to pressure his mother. He is irate that his mother is having a relationship with Gabriel who was Ignacio's lawyer(like it is any of his business!!!) and acting like a little girl (a touch of ageism here???) He doesn't trust Gabriel.

ETERNAMENTE Part Two

He feels the whole family could be in danger. In the conversation, Rogelio finds out that Paula knew about his mother's relationship and is angry that she didn't tell him (really? She promised Martina that she wouldn't tell. She had integrity!!) Paula says it wasn't hers to tell. It was his mother's. He should respect his mother's decision. He tells her that she should keep on the sidelines of family affairs.

Gabriel encourages Martina to tell the family at least that they are going out. She promises him she will but now she is more concerned that Rogelio doesn't not find out that Irma tried to kill her. That could push Rogelio around the bend and cause other tragedies. Fidel tells Rogelio he has talked to Ignacio and he knows nothing about the fire either. His mother cannot talk. Rogelio, being just as classist as his mother, tells Fernando that Ignacio isn't one of them, he isn't at their level, social class. Their mother nearly died because of him. Fernando informs him that isn't true because his own mother almost died and they all should work together to find out what happened. Fernando also suggests beating the truth out of Gabriel to get the answers they want from him. Rogelio says that Fernando will do no such thing.

PAULA brings Martina a bouquet of flowers. She tells Martina that Rogelio told her that she told him about Gabriel when they were loading her into the ambulance. Martina is sure that Rogelio will never accept him. Paula suggest that she give Rogelio some time and space to think about it all. Martina asks why she is helping her. Paula, in her best value neutral tone, says because she knows what it is like to have a love that everyone judges and rejects. Martina accepts it well. She later tells Gabriel that Paula gave her the push she needed to have a relationship with him.

EVIDENCE Rogelio finds his dead father's cigarette lighter at the burned out cabin pretending to be an insurance adjustor. The public prosecutor gives Fidel a list of all the calls made to/from Irma's phone. It turns out that Irma phoned Martina. Other evidence is being analyzed by the prosecutor's office. The prosecutor tells Fidel that if they discover that the fire was set, the culprit will feel the full force of the law. ALL cases are important but taking care of a case for La Monarca is even more so. (Okay)

IRMA gains consciousness. Ignacio is overjoyed. Gabriel tells her he is happy she is alive to pay for what she did. If she does anytihg against Martina again, he will destroy her. Ignacio visits her again and she is out of contact with reality thinking that Martina was out to kill them and that there are microphones in the room and people are following them, etc.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT Martina has all of the family around the supper table except for Rogelio and Lucas. She announces that she has begun a formal relationship with Gabriel. SILENCE until the next episode.

EVERYTHING ELSE

Martina asks Imelda why she brought her that box of letters from irma's in the first place. Did she think they would make her happy? Did she read any of them?

IMELDA keeps trying to get in good with Fernando but he isn't buying it or believing her.

Aunt Pati wants Lucas to come live with her or at least stay with her some times.. She says that Imelda is tough on him. Rogelio says that is taken care of. If Pati keeps insisting that Lucas come to live with her, he will make sure that she never sees him again. (Good for him) He tells Lucas that if anybody like Imelda bother him, to let him know.

Ximena is still mooning over Fernando at her mother's and talking to him on the phone. Her mother tells her she needs to let him go. Her creepy brother overhears the conversation.

Please include anything I left out.

Thank you Jarifa for the highlights and lowlights! I totally agree with this: 'Rogelio made these episodes very tedious'

Boy did he ever, I like this show more and more all the time and most of these characters have grown on me, but Rogelio still hasn't AT ALL!! I try to leave room for the idea that he has so much pressure and responsibility, but it's not working. I just think he's a jacka$$. I just do. I can't stand his arrogance and entitlement. I wanted to slap him when he walked into Martina's room and interrupted Luis' sentence saying 'Sorry to interrupt, but I need to talk to mom, alone!' Really?? I mean, really??? You're so important, you can't even wait til your brother finishes his sentence before ordering him out because now YOU want to talk to mommy?

I can't even say good for him for telling Pati if she doesn't stop insisting she will never see Lucas again, I think there for miles and miles of options before you get to 'you'll never see him again'. He could say no more visits until you stop insisting, for example. The whole idea of threatening to keep her nephew away from her forever because he doesn't like her suggestion is too controlling to me. I could see it if Pati was being shady or scheming but she is genuinely concerned and maybe she's off base, but if Rogelio wasn't such a jerk he could have an actual conversation with Pati about her concerns.

Martina seems to be developing a genuine affection for Paula and vise versa. This isn't playing nice anymore, it's the beginning of true friendship.

Jarifa, your observant eye was sharply focused and you relayed tonight’s events flawlessly.

Tonight was a startling and glaring contrast between galan and villain on how they handled their shared tragedy, reuniting with their mothers at the hospital.

“IRMA gains consciousness. Ignacio is overjoyed.”

“ROGELIO turns into a mad dog with a bone as he questions his mother over and over again about what happened. He was obnoxious”.

If my mother had just been rescued from a blazing inferno, my first thought would be utter relief. I would tell her how much I love her and ensure she was as physically as comfortable as possible. Berating and interrogating her about personal matters that were none of my business would not occur to me.

Rogelio telling Gabriel “he doesn't want to see him near his mother” was totally inappropriate. “Rogelio, being just as classist as his mother, tells Fernando that Ignacio isn't one of them, he isn't at their level, social class” shows us exactly who elitist Rogelio can be.

Rogelio does have some good qualities but I agree with you Darcy, his arrogance, entitlement, and imperious air can be insufferable.

No one spoke up to defend or support Martina’s announcement about Gabriel. The silence was deafening although I didn’t blame Marco a bit. Poor Blanca is still trying to get Martina’s approval which she still won’t budge on. She certainly sampled that candy quickly though, didn’t she??

Were there sparks between Ulises and tia Pati or did I imagine that?

Thank heavens for Paula. Glad she defended herself for keeping Martina’s secret. I’m happy she and Martina are indeed forging a friendship.

Thank you Jarifa, this was wonderful.

So why am I supposed to like Rogelio again? Someone provided some explanations for his behaviour some time ago, but the man is just insufferable in general, whatever problems he might have. Rogelio seems to be channeling Martina here, with all his threats and other nonsense.
Martina might like Paula, but it's kind of not that impressive after Paula has been nothing but good to her. And Martina's actions go beyond just 'mean' with what she told Fidel. I believe she also doesn't want her other sons to recognise Ignacio. Did she say they'd bring him into the house if they knew the truth? And the whole 'my reputation' speech is not just old-fashioned, it's selfish as hell. She stopped being an ass after being given ample proof of how good Paula is. Well, that's something I guess.
Paula being her protector now feels a bit funny because it somehow seems overdone.
Rogelio also only talks to his son after someone else tells him there's a problem. Typical of him. 'taken care of'? How exactly? They'd have to move out for this to be true. What a liar! And he even dares to threaten someone who at least has some idea things aren't OK.
I find it hard to feel sorry for Martina, given that she now gets a taste of her own medicine. I love it when a control freak gets this kind of payback.

Eternamente #61/62

Gracias, Jarifa.

This attempted murder/suicide will mean a setback in Ignacio learning the painful truths about his mother. He does not see her crazy and doesn't want to. We are now seeing that it goes way back and may have been caused by something other than her abusive husband and her failure to protect Ignacio from that psycho. Other than the two who killed James Bulger what could any ten-year-old possibly do to provoke the abuse that resulted in those kinds of scars?

And how many people have seen her crazy? Beatriz, Cecelia, and now Martina have. Ignacio seems to choose not to see it. and we have 58 more episodes to go.

If any mental health condition is heritable along with environmental influence Ignacio is doomed.

Does Martina know about Rogelio's investigation into Ignacio's past? His apparently classist talk about him could be hiding his knowledge of Ignacio's illegal activities which he has only just obtained proof of. The big question there is whether that will stand up in a court of law. He could be withholding this info until he's sure. However, Ignacio's behavior in the board meeting the other day definitely showed that he is not on their level in the ways that matter to Martina.

As for Rogelio's reaction to the revelation about Gabriel, didn't Gabriel resign as Ig's lawyer? or does Rogelio not know that? I doubt he would object if he knew the backstory Martina is hiding.

At least Lucas has come to his senses but Imelda is always a danger, as is Ximena's brother is to herself. That actor looks like a young Christopher Walken, who creeps me out even when he isn't supposed to.

Finally, about Rogelio's visit to the crime scene: Hasn't he seen any crime shows on TV that bring home the point about mishandling possible evidence? He should have taken a pen out of his pocket to pick up the lighter. Had he done that Irma's prints would still be on it.

Lester, on Thursday's episode when Marcos was talking to that young lady (I think her name is Camilla) he was telling her to go away and leave her alone and she was threatening that she was going to expose him...it was a veiled threat. She did say something about seeing him coming out of the police station that made it seem like such an action was nefarious but she didn't spell out what exactly it was she knew or thought she knew. Marcos side of the conversation was simply don't mess with me or you'll regret it. This is the same young lady he got pregnant and then abused in the beginning of the show, causing her to lose the baby.

The owner of the business, the same guy who was supposed to be buying the supplies from Maria Teresa that got stolen, was giving Adriana money because she sold him merchandise instead. It's what she and Marcos were arguing about the day before. She committed the materials for sale to this guy and he already had a different plan for them. Anyway, Adriana sells the stuff and the guy pays her, it sounds like they are planning a recurring sale much like the guy was going to do with Maria Teresa.

As for her conversation with Marcos, she gave him the money and he wanted to know what it was for. She hadn't told him exactly what her business was but she was showing him the money she made and telling him it's only his half. The rest of the conversation was about her trying to show she's successful and can make money too and him downplaying her success.

When Adriana was talking to her side kick, she gave her part of the profits which surprised her and then she asked how it went with Marcos. Adriana filled her in and sidekick said Marcos can't be trusted. Adriana said she knows that, she expects Marcos to play dirty but she thinks he can get the upper hand.

Thanks Jarifa, another great recap!

I like Rogelio less and less each day but last night I decided there’s no way I will ever like him. He overstepped his bounds in everything. Questioning his mother, going to the crime scene and his behavior with Gabriel. He wasn’t nice to Paula or Pati.

Fernando seems to be right in his feelings for his brother. Rogelio really thinks he’s in charge of the world. Of course he probably got that from his mother.

I felt like Pati was trying to help Lucas as she knew he wasn’t happy there. Instead of threatening her, Rogelio should have worked out regular times for Lucas to be with his aunt.

Paula should be really fed up with her husband. She and Cecilia need to just live together for a while, while their husbands get their acts together.

I’m not sure why Martina isn’t telling the truth about the fire. Is it because she threatened Irma and feels she pushed her to it? I hope the truth comes out. It’s Gabriel’s cabin so he should report to the police. But then he loses Martina.

Imelda needs a filter on her mouth. Her parents really didn’t teach her anything. I’m glad Martina got on her about bringing her the letter. And she’ll fight for her marriage for her place in society. Not sure how she will end up at the end of this. But I sure don’t want her to be around her daughter. She was bad mouthing Fernando when he couldn’t leave the office to go out with them. If she keeps that up Fernando’s daughter will hate him.

Liz

Tierra,

Darcy, thank you so much for answering those questions. That was extremely helpful. You also gave me some information that apparently went over my head. I don't recall or I completely missed that Marco had impregnated her, then caused her to lose the baby.

Regarding Camila, I always wondered who she was. I see her name in the credits show during the opening theme song but never see or recognize her in the story. I didn't know what part of this TN she played. Now, thanks to you I can watch for her as the show continues to develop.

Thank you also for helping me better understand what Adrianna is doing.

Jarifa, thank you for capturing every moment. It was a great morning read.

Igy and Irma are now slipping down a very steep slope as Rog and Faithful Fidel are finding out more about Igy and Irma is becoming increasingly insane .

Adult children sometimes do not like to see their parents dating after they have become single due to losing their partners through death or divorce . Sometimes this is due to worry about the parent or feeling loyalty toward the other parent. Sudden!y the roles are reversed and the child takes on the role of parent . Where have you been? Where did you meet this guy? What do you know about him?

Since I mostly concentrate on the visual , I got a giggle out of Paula handing Martina that huge bouquet and Martina just holding it.Get a vase. Flowers are such an important part of showing love and respect in Mexican culture .

I also noticed how awkward it was when sweet Blanca offered the bag of candy to Martina and she didn't put out her hand to accept it. Who does that when someone holds out a gift to you ? It was funny the way Martina immediately grabbed the bag as soon as Blanca left . She must have a sweet tooth.

It looks like Ulises and the father of one of the music school students may be connecting with Pati and that teacher . Who will get whom?

Marco reminds me of someone ....maybe a cuter, younger Jimmy Fallon.

Ximena's brother is muy creepy , but what was his expression saying as he listened to her talking to their mother ? Was it pity for her ?

OT....Watch for the Super moon on Aug 30. I miss Kirby's photos of the moon and birds .

Super job, Jarifa.

ITA Rogelio was an a$$ to Martina about Gabriel. But she gets no sympathy from me. Madam, you're reaping what you sewed. You have certainly lucked up to have a forgiving dil like Paula.

Diana, yep Ulises and tia Pati were instantly smitten with each other. Lucas noticed. I guess this means Ulises is here to stay and might even join Rogelio's extended family.

Rogelio will have to lose some of his controlling ways, inherited no doubt from dear ole mom.

MUJER (Susan!)
Thank you so much for filling me in, Susan! I didn't get to reply yesterday because things were happening.
Mujer has been amazing. I love the plotting/writing, how we think things are one way, and then no! It's not how we thought. And then later another little scene will tell us something else is not what we thought. They really kept me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out the mysteries of what happened.
I also love the very complex characters, not black & white, cartoony characters like you get in the usual novelas. And the acting!
It's amazing that there is so much love in this show, but not one kiss, not one bedroom scene with lit candles all over (who lights those?) no scene of swimming in the pool under the waterfall, etc.
I want to know what happened after Sarp got out of the water! It looks like they won't tell us this season. Have you heard anything about Univision showing the next season??
I can't wait for Monday's final!

Tierra

Thanks, Daisy, for your notes on #18. I unexpectedly fell behind this week but hope to catch up by Monday.

ETERNAMENTE

Thanks, everyone for all of your comments. This continues to be fun to recap. : )

Darcy, "Martina seems to be developing a genuine affection for Paula and vise versa. This isn't playing nice anymore, it's the beginning of true friendship." If that is true, then everybody better watch out because Paula is just as strong and stubborn as Martina.

Diana, "If my mother had just been rescued from a blazing inferno, my first thought would be utter relief. I would tell her how much I love her and ensure she was as physically as comfortable as possible. Berating and interrogating her about personal matters that were none of my business would not occur to me." Exactly. I was surprised she didn't make him sit down so she could have slapped him up side the head. He sure deserved it. The lack of respect was appalling no matter what he thought she did or didn't do.

waterlily, all your points are valid. All I can say is that these characters are so multifaceted that they are like real people who are not either all good or all bad.. The writers have done a good job so far considering all of our different pints of view.

Urban, "Finally, about Rogelio's visit to the crime scene: Hasn't he seen any crime shows on TV that bring home the point about mishandling possible evidence? He should have taken a pen out of his pocket to pick up the lighter. Had he done that Irma's prints would still be on it." So tue!

Liz, "Imelda needs a filter on her mouth. Her parents really didn’t teach her anything. I’m glad Martina got on her about bringing her the letter. And she’ll fight for her marriage for her place in society. Not sure how she will end up at the end of this" YES! Imelda never seems to get the message and change. No matter how she states her conversations with Fernando, Martina, etc., she ends up fang herself as a poor suffering martyr.

Susan, "Adult children sometimes do not like to see their parents dating after they have become single due to losing their partners through death or divorce . Sometimes this is due to worry about the parent or feeling loyalty toward the other parent. Sudden!y the roles are reversed and the child takes on the role of parent . Where have you been? Where did you meet this guy? What do you know about him?" Very well put but then IMHP he parents need to take back their parental position and not allow their children treat them as less than. Marina better not roll over to her childrens' demands.

Niecie, "yep Ulises and tia Pati were instantly smitten with each other. Lucas noticed. I guess this means Ulises is here to stay and might even join Rogelio's extended family." This was a relief that hopefully Ulises will have his romantic interests centered elsewhere. It could be a good thing if Rogelio would have to see him at family functions in the future. Very funny.

I really liked La Patrona as it offered actors I was not familiar with.

Minas

I am going to recap all the episodes from the first week (29 August - 1 September). I might also recap the Monday, September 4th episode. If anyone would like to help afterwards I'd be gald.

"MINAS":

Weirdo: I'll be watching only because of Livia Brito.

Steve Boudreaux

MINAS

Weirdo, your recaps are always wonderful; it's nice of you to offer to recap the first week of Minas.

This looks really good; Cesar Evora is a perennial favorite of mine. But I'm already trying to watch what I can of three hours of Eternamente and Tierra. That said, I will try to give this a go but am not sure. At best, I would only be able to comment...

Diana

Minas

Steve, I'm also interested in seeing Livia Brito here.

Diana, watching 3 novelas at once (4 hours a day!) is certainly hard. I definitely understand not being able to recap. I hope you comment though! Your comments are always thoughtful, interesting and spot on.

Eternamente

I'm not watching this, but I saw that Eternamente's double episodes with stop in September 4. 1 hour episodes from then, at 20:00.

Minas

Weirdo ...I am looking forward to this show . I will be grateful for your recaps.
I am a fan of Cesar and Oswaldo , and I will be happy to see the young guy who played Theo in Invencible again. I recently watched Annette Michel in an Azteca telenovela from maybe 8 years ago , and I wasn't sure if she was good of bad. She was a little wooden to me . She played opposite Mauricio Islas ,who was very good . I think she is the villain in Minas .

There are many new faces for me in this show.

It will be fun to start a new show together .

ETERNAMENTE

Weirdo, thanks for the good news. I just hope that Uni follows throw with it.

Minas + Eternamente

Susan, I'm glad we'll be starting a new show together too! I'm going to post my "Antes del Gran Estreño" tomorrow morning, in which I explain all the characters and more, like the one I did with La Madrastra.

Jarifa, double episodes are a nightmare. I hope Uni follows through with it too.

MINAS

Interesting that César Évora is involved in a novela with mining in the plot again. He played a villain in "Mariana de la noche" where he owned a mine.

Midas

Weirdo ...According to the trailers I watched, there are many characters ,so your preview and explanations will help.

I am watching "Eternamente " and"Mujer" .

It's always fun to anticipate a new ride. I loved Invencible but absolutely hated the ending . boo. I like happy endings .

Out on my real patio. Finally started a new canvas . Can't believe the kids are back in school and fall is around the corner . Where does the time go?

Tierra

I have a few questions on Friday's episode. If anyone is watching and can answer I would appreciate it

When Rutilio and Bernarda were talking, he his hand is a reminder of her ( I think that's what he said). It appears to have been burned. Can anyone elaborate on that?

At Remedio's store, she seemed to caution Norma about believing all the gossip surrounding Maria Theresa. Then she put something in her hand. What was that all about?

Also, did Valentina ask her mother to teach her somethings about being a veterinary?

Finally why did Adrianna give money to Rutilio?

thanks

Lester

Cesar Évora

FYI.

Cesar Évora studied Geophysics in order to dedicate himself to looking for minerals and petroleum for his native Country,Cuba. Like others, he spontaneously showed up at a casting and was selected out of 500 people.

He immigrated to Mexico in the early 1990s after making several successful movies in Cuba.

Minas

Susan and others, my "Antes del Gran Estreño" post is up for anyone who's interested.

Tierra

Lester, I haven't yet watched Friday's episode. I will watch some time today and answer your questions later if no one else beats me to it!

Tierra

Rutilio was referring to his burnt hand when talking to Bernarda. This would imply that she somehow was able to burn him when he attacked her. Rutilio raped Bernarda in the past as we've seen in flashbacks. Their whole conversation was a scary predatory exchange where Rutilio was talking about how much she turns him on and how he'd love to be with her again. Bernarda warned him that she's no longer the weak little girl she was back then and he'd better not ever touch her again.

I didn't catch what exactly it was that Remedios gave Norma, it was some ointment or something she uses for her aliments and Remedios gave it to her for free out of good will after basically reminding Norma they've known each other many years and she shouldn't need Adriana to tell her who Remedios is or isn't...their relationship should speak for itself.

Valentina was asking a bunch of questions about vet stuff. She was trying to distract mommy with the idea that a cow was sick so Regina would have time to see Clemente without getting caught.

Adriana gave Rutilio money because he was the one who gave her the tip about the business deal with the store. It was like his cut or finder's fee. He said it wasn't necessary but she insisted.

Tierra,
Thank you so much Darcy. I really appreciate your help with this.

Lester
