Here's Page 2 for the week. The current telenovelas are as follows (all times are Eastern Daylight Time):

9 - 10PM - Sed de Venganza
10 - 11PM - La Familia

A new Turkish dizi (novela), La Familia, began on Tuesday. It has been described as "an intense love story in which Aslan (Kivanc Tatlitug) and Devin (Serenay Sarikaya) must confront the secrets and power struggles of Aslan's criminal family, as well as his controlling mother, in order for their love to flourish."

Everyone is welcome to join in the conversation. Since discussions of all the novelas share the same page, please remember to put the name of the telenovela you're referring to at the top of your post, so readers can easily find the conversations they're looking for.

By common agreement, this group DOES NOT discuss previews, trailers, or any other plot information not found in a current or past episode of the current production. Spoilers WILL be removed by the admin. This includes reference to earlier productions of the story, and even the original novel. Thanks for your cooperation!

Dondi, many many thanks for this superb recap. I'm afraid I would have been hopelessly lost without it. Even so, I did like parts of the episode. I especially enjoyed watching Devin and Hulya together, with both of them saying one thing and meaning quite the opposite. Devin talks about the destructive way some mothers behave, while at the same time "assuring" Hulya that of course she's not like that. At first, I wasn't I wasn't sure whether Hulya was aware of Devin's sarcasm. But learning that Hulya arranged with the reporter to ask about Aslan's "womanizing" so that Devin would hear him, it seems clear that both women are skilled in using and recognizing deceit.

I realize that the family business is supposed to be a major aspect of this dizi, but so far I find myself perplexed by the business and the people involved, and fascinated by Hulya and Devin.

"VENGANZA" HIGHLIGHTS DISCUSSION
Howdy from the Alamo City CarayCaray Family. Here's my super-short recap of last night's episode.

*Francisco had to get restrained by Marcelo after Francisco is pissed seeing Crazy Whacky Fern at the graveside services for Manuela. Crazy Goldie Locks insults Manuela even in death when she put the flowers at the gravesite.

*Gullible Elisa wearing the necklace that she got from Francisco 10+ years earlier.

*Crazy Whacky Fern gives Redhead Girl the hostile stare while everyone is eating lunch or dinner at the del Pino Mansion. We see Sebastian, Elisa & Daddy del Pino as well.

*Gabriel suffers some health episode while having sex with Brenda: He almost had a Nelson Rockefeller moment LOL.

*Tania still head over heels over Marcelo: Gut feeling Alonso is NOT going to like that & will react violently.

*The wedding of Elisa & Slick Robert begins. I'm snickering because neither Elisa nor her father have any clue that Goldie Locks & Slick Robert are having an affair LOL: I cannot wait for that dirty little secret to get exposed down the road.

Steve, thank you for the excellent recap. Fern is very scary crazy. Susan

Venganza #8

A few of my observations. Brenda meets for breakfast with her parents. Daddy wonders if she has learned anything. She claims she has no access to the business side of things, but she tells him some Mexican businessmen are interested in the Pompano Beach building site. I think perhaps it is a refurbishment of existing condos to make them luxury condos, but I'm once again lost on the business aspect.

Sebas, I think, wants to stay in Mass after graduation and not be part of the family business. Later in the episode Alfredo seems upset and perhaps tries to sweeten the deal if he comes back to Miami. Fernanda snidely remarks they can open a cafe that Monica (Moni) can work in. Moni says it is up to Sebas to do what he wants.

Ah, poor Gabriel. The little blue pill failed him so he thinks taking 4 more is the solution. I hear defense, now Brenda knows the problem she seems to want to stick by her man. Alonso in his usual crude manner offers himself up as stud. I think most of Gabriel's dysfunction is because of his brother.

Mirna tries to be the voice of reason to Fernanda but she is too damaged. So Eugenio made a reappearance in her dreams, grotesquely burned and stabbing her as she lays in bed.

Did Alfredo hint that he wants Fernanda to have a child with him. Gabriel and daddy discussed children while they were golfing, because Brenda is obsessed with wanting a child. The fact Fernanda didn't have a child came up, but daddy says he already has 5.

No spoilers, but I am happy this show is not following the Pura Sangre script too closely. It is keeping me guessing.

OT I still am in face down positioning hoping this gas bubble dissolves from my eye sooner than later. I fear it will take more than the 5 days, the shortest time suggested.

I took some notes last night. Mostly, they're illegible, but here are a few random things I recall about last night's episode, which I guess is #3.

Aslan asks Devin "Will you marry me?" He adds, "Be careful. If I don't like your answer, I won't ask again." Devin replies, "No."

Hulya arrives at the pool. Various family members are in the water having what seems to be a good time (but with these people, I can never tell). Hulya shouts for Ceylan, and when Ceylan doesn't answer, Hulya apparently fires a rifle into the air, causing everyone to flee from the pool. (I have no idea what this is all about, other than showing us yet again what a [fill in the blank] Hulya is.)

Aslan tells Devin "I want this to end. We are nothing to each other." He adds that she's angry because she wanted to break up with him, and he beat her to it. We then see a conversation Devin has with her mother where Devin says essentially the same thing--"he beat me to it."

At one point, Aslan asks Hulya, "How are you so sure Devin won't be my wife?"

Devin reluctantly comes to see her father on his birthday at the house where he lives with his second wife and their child(ren?).. He is emotionally cold toward Devin and is unhappy that she came. A bit later, Aslan appears, introduces himself to Devin's father, wishes him a happy birthday, and gives him a present, which seems to be a golf club. Devin is surprised and seemingly not pleased that Aslan was able to find out her father's address.

Hulya arrives at Cihan's restaurant. He immediately announces that the restaurant must close for the day, and everyone should leave at once. There will be no charge for the food. Almost everyone gets up and leaves, but one person tells Cihan that he's not finished with his meal and continues to eat. Cihan comes over to him and pushes his face into his plate of food. This convinces the guy to leave. Cihan then tells Hulya "I took care of Aysel (the woman who was in love with Aslan). When Hulya doesn't say anything, Cihan pleads with her to look at him. He tells her, "I really miss you. I'm not well. I need you. Hate me, but don't ignore me."

At the end of the episode, Devin asks Aslan to marry her.

Fam2 #3

Juanita, Is Ceylan Hulya's daughter or granddaughter? Not sure how old Hulya is in real life but she looks to be in her 70's to me.

I was thinking Aslan and Devin were joking around with the marriage proposals. (That red dress he bought her was super revealing. Better for a bedroom scene than a business party.). Devin certainly came across as dead serious on her proposal.

Devin's dad is awful. No wonder her sister is so messed up.

Kat in SC: Something tells me Brenda will get knocked up by either Alonso or someone else. With her obsession of wanting kids, it looks like Brenda will get preggers at some point.

Gabriel might NOT be able to have any kids at all for obvious reasons.

Monica is the Telemundo version of Aurora (MEPS) or Paulina (PS): completely gullible. I've got this awful feeling that Psycho Goldie Locks will instigate Alonso to rape Monica just in order to break up Sebastian & Monica for good.

fam2

Thanks for the recap, novelera. You posted it on the previous page so some might not have read. Thanks to Juanita for supplementing with notes.

Power struggles everywhere. In business and at home.

The edits from ep 2 were in ep 3. Ceylan’s party and Aysel and Cihan.
Slight edits at the party: Tolga was really enjoying himself at Ceylan’s party, chatting up a couple of girls. Ha, he snuck out of there without shotgun granny Hulya noticing.

Hulya purposely told Cihan that Aslan is with Devin now. She’s the perfect woman for him and they will get married soon. Looks like Cihan will turn his attention to Devin.

Kat, Ceylan calls Aslan and Cihan and Leyla, brother/sister. I haven’t heard her call Hulya mom unless I missed it. Could be Yusuf’s daughter by another woman. Not a spoiler, just a speculation. I only saw a few Turkish eps.

“All during the whole episode they keep playing the most awful, sappy ballads in Spanish I’ve ever heard.” I don’t know why Telemundo doesn’t spring for the Turkish songs. Univision does.

I have the Friday recap but tonight is Game 1 Dodgers v Yankees. I’ll watch the episode tomorrow so the recap will be up later Saturday. Thanks for your patience.

I agree about the music, Dondi. At least they aren’t using mariachi music like they did in one dizi, the name of which escapes me!
Thank you for recaps! They really help! Two very dysfunctional families. Makes me really hope this generation can overcome the psychological damage.

Well, I did it again, posted this to Page 1. Thanks, dondi, for letting me know. Is this better late than never? Probably not.

#3 Wow! These are some incredibly damaged people. Here's a quickie.

As I suspected, there was no sex. Devin took off the black dress and put on the red one he bought for her. They just cuddle, joking about how the worst error of their lives would be marrying each other.

All during the whole episode they keep playing the most awful, sappy ballads in Spanish I’ve ever heard. They should have gotten Christian Nodal who sang the song that ran over the credits in El Conde. I really enjoyed that song.

Hulya storms into a party where Ceylan is swimming with friends. It looks pretty harmless to me, but when Ceylan doesn’t pay attention to Mommy Dearest, she pulls a shotgun and shoots a couple of rounds outside the door.

Aysel is furious, somehow having a video of Aslan and Devin on her phone. It looks like Cihan really is into Aslan’s leftovers because he kisses Aysel.

The next morning Aslan changes up and tells Devin that this is the end of this relationship. He’s only willing to have, maybe, a superficial sex thing with her. He cares about her and doesn’t want to hurt her. She blows up. He says he knew she was going to tell him it was over on that boat. She calls him an idiot and leaves.

Aslan comes to see Seher, his grandmother. She’s all in on Devin and wants him to take her to meet his father.

Aslan seems to taunt his mother, making her believe that he and Devin are a real thing.

Devin argues with her sister, who says she wasn’t invited to their father’s birthday dinner.

Ati, the guy who Aslan threatened at the party after the funeral, has come at Uncle Ibo’s request to meet with him. Ibo does want to participate in the documentary about Yusuf Soykan.

Devin reluctantly goes to her father’s birthday dinner. We see that he didn’t invite her at all and is furiously whispering to his wife about her being there at all. Aslan shows up, all smiles.

Cihan tries to reason with his mother, saying he misses her very much. She’s cold as ice and tells him to stay away from Aslan.

Devin’s stepmother asks about her mother and then the house where her mother lives is mentioned. Devin blows up and goes right after her and her father. She’s irate that, after the terrible father and husband he was, the two of them seem to want to take away the house where her mother lives. Then her father goes off. He rips into her and eventually says he wishes his daughters would disappear.

Aslan slams his hands down on the table. [Fortunately, it’s not glass this time.] He tells the stepmother and son to leave the table. They kept trying to do so when Daddy Dearest was raving, but he wouldn’t let them. Aslan says he doesn’t like to interfere in family relations, but he’s in love with Devin. He goes on a bit about how much she means to him and then leaves.

fam2

Missed pasting the last sentence:

He’s driving off. Devin runs after the car, catches up. And when he gets out of the car, she asks him if he wants to marry her.

fam2

Kat, I think Ceylan is Hulya's daughter, but I'm not 100% sure, so I just referred to her by name.

fam2

Novelera, it never occurred to me to look on the previous page. Had I known you were even thinking of doing a recap, I wouldn't have tried to get things started with some random notes. And in answer to your question, YES!, seeing your recap is immensely better than not seeing it. It clarified a lot for me, and I'm sure for others as well. MANY THANKS!

Sed..
Thanks for recapp, for some reason spanish caption is not working.!!

OT

dondi, yes, the World Series. My DVR is ready to record. Like me a guy in my Spanish class is a San Francisco Giants fan. There are no words to describe how much we hate the "billion-dollar boys in blue" who outbid us for every good player on the market. So, despite there being a California team playing, it's impossible to root for the Dodgers.

On the other hand, I've barely recovered from my hometown team (grew up in Akron...loooong time Cleveland Indians fan) losing once again to the hated Yankees. After so many years in Califas I don't hate the Yankees the way I did as a child. The Indians did the right thing, I suppose, changing their name to Guardians. But I have a closet full of Cleveland Indians sweatshirts, t-shirts, and caps with the Indians logo. My brother sent them to me for Christmas over the years. While the Guardians were playing, there were many phone calls between my sister, my brother and me. Hopes were high. Dashed once again. The Indians/Guardians haven't won it all since 1948!

Gracias, Juanita and Novelera. There sure was no shortage of drama last night. Thanks for the help through it. Both familias are dysfunctional with a capital D.

Hulya and Cihan are a foul pair. How can a mother not be revolted that her older son gets off on boinking his younger brother's (discarded) women. Hulya seems to blame Cihan for her husband's suicide, but I'm wondering if she had something to do with it herself or whether it was actually suicide.

Aslan certainly knows Devin's dress size. She was poring out of that gown. I like that they only snuggled. These two have chemistry and I'm buying that they both desire to marry each other. Woohoo, Hulya will have a cow.

I'm wondering if Ceylan is a granddaughter or goddaugher even though she calls Aslan "brother."

It's strange that the uncle is all for the documentary. I guess he's Aslan's enemy.

Fam 2
Niecie, I also wonder if Aslan's dad really died from suicide. Time will tell.

Sort of, or OT .... Halimacandy, the title used for sed de venganza is actually Venganza. Sorry your CC's weren't working. I rely on them heavily so I'm sure the recaps help

"VENGANZA" HIGHLIGHTS DISCUSSION
Kat in SC: I overslept last night & missed last night's episode. If you can, could you do the recap of last night's episode please ?

Thanks!

Novelera: I'm also a die-hard fan of the San Francisco Giants.

Venganza #9

1. Elisa walks down the outdoor aisle as if she is walking to a guillotine. She stops near Francisco/Emilio, from here on out I will call him FE, which is fitting because of the necklace he gave her 10 years ago, and they say a few words. During the vows both Roberto and Elisa flashback to lovemaking with Fernanda and FE respectively. Alonsa is giving Brenda lascivious looks during the ceremony.
2.I guess they skipped showing a reception. The happy couple aren't at the house. Family discuss the wedding and jokingly tell Sebas and Moni they are next. He says they would want a simple wedding. BTW, I'm coming to work in the firm.
3. The 3 amigos discuss the wedding. FE is kind of happy because Elisa was wearing his necklace.
4. Elisa and Roberto are at the airport. She is totally preoccupied because of Ana.
5. Alonso and Brenda have a sex fest in his room while she told Gabriel she was getting something to drink....That sure took some nerve on her part.
6. I need a cheat sheet of names. Mexican amigo is flying back to Mexico tomorrow.
7. Moni has Fernanda pegged right. She does not want to live with that woman. Sebas suggests they get their own apartment.
8. Brenda's dad talks about the shifty practices the Del Pino firm uses to FE and Mexican amigo. Do they want to be associated with such a firm?
9. Poor ana dreams fernanda is suffocating her by pillow just like she did to her mother. When she tells FE he reassures her and tells her to concentrate on getting well.
10. The dead clinic doctor had connections. Fern meets with him. She wants him to find ana. She must be in another clinic under a false name. Find her and kill her.
11. Alonso hits on Moni. She has his number and just wants him to leave her be.
12. The hitman calls Alfredo with a ransom demand. Alfredo wants to go to the police. Fernanda, of course, just wants him to pay the ransom.

Venganza #9 2/2
13 Fermin and Erika are having relationship/marital (are they married or just living together)? He keeps coming home late. She suspects another woman. He is mad she doesn't trust him. Sorry, I take her side on this one.
14 Tania and Mexican amigo, Marcelo (I wrote a cheat sheet of the main characters as provided by Wiki) flirt on the phone. It's good to see her getting over Alonso.
15. Brenda is trying to befriend Moni. They'll have to go shopping when Moni returns from Cambridge. She could use a makeover, per Brenda.
16. FE's investigator has discovered that Eugenio Beltran is the son of Alfredo del Pino's father and his secretary...i e. Alfredo's half brother. But the investigation also found he is dead, burned in his house.
17. Brenda asks Gabriel did he take his little blue pill? Guess she wants some more action. I think he tells her they aren't effective, he is considering an implant. She tells him not to rush into anything. Gabriel calls her a saint as she remembers her sin with Alonso.
18. No happy "papa" tonight for Alfredo. Fern has cut him off. She thinks he needs to "rescue" Ana by paying the ransom.
19. In Gay Paree (Paris) there's another unhappy "papa". Elisa wasn't in the mood because she claims to be too worried about Ana.
20. Fren calls the hitman and tells him to lose the phone he called Alf from. He tells her he is a professional, already done.
21. FE is at the big house, not sure why. Everyone is at the office but Fernanda. She is putting the moves on him. She is so stressed. Sunday a person she greatly cared for was buried. Fire was smoking from FE's nostrils at this. Also my stepchildren hate me, with the exception of Ana. My husband sent her to a clinic 10 years ago because she is a drug addict and it messed up her brain.
22. Moni has de9dhe wants to remain in Cambridge.

OT

I’m not a Dodger fan by any means and I hate the Yankees. (OMG Let’s go Mets!) So, I’m rooting for the Yankees to lose. Satisfied with last night's outcome. Historical. It’s a beautiful thing!

ps I just finished last night's episode. I have to edit and I'll post in a little while.

fam2 #4 part 1

At a stoplight, Devin asks Aslan, benimle evlenir misin? Will you marry me? Aslan just stares at her. [obligatory delayed response to create suspense.] Finally, he asks her to get in the car so they can talk. Nope, she wants her answer! Yes or no? The drivers behind them get impatient. Eko smiles. Aslan tells Eko to go retrieve Devin’s car. Aslan finally convinces Devin to get in and they drive off.

Aslan thinks Devin wants to get married to have a victory over her father. Are you a psychologist, she snarks in reply. Aslan asks, do you really want to marry me? She answers, have you ever considered getting married? Be honest. Did you mean what you said at the house? Of course, he says. Then my offer stands, she answers, we will sign the papers.

Not that simple, Aslan tells her. It’s ok to be crazy but we shouldn’t be stupid. She’s annoyed. He takes her hand and says, look at me. She softens. He continues, [from the Turkish] when you look at me like this, and from the bottom of your heart, without questioning, without anger, you ask, come on Aslan, let’s get married, I will be sure. He playfully warns, don’t be too long, I won’t be able to bear it.

Devin laughs, are you pressuring me? He moves in for a kiss, but he’s interrupted by a phone call from Annem (my mother). He doesn’t take it. Where were we? Another interrupting call. From Yavru Ceylan. [Yavru can be translated as “baby”, “young”, “little one”.] Now he’s concerned and he takes the call. Grandma Seher is missing! Devin wants to come along to help.

The Soykans are frantic. Grandma snuck out while her aide was drawing her bath. The aide is fired and the Soykans get ready to search the property. Aslan and Devin arrive. Hulya is ticked to see Devin has come. Aslan rips into the security guy. Devin pulls him away.

Ibo arrives and slaps the security guy to the ground. He berates Hulya for being negligent and useless. Hulya says it’s not the time to discuss it. The search starts.

Devin discovers a trail of flowers. She follows it to find Seher standing at the top of a steep hill. Seher is holding a bunch of flowers. Devin calls out to her. Seher turns and exclaims, mother! Mother! The family hears and heads in that direction.

Mother is that you, Seher asks. Sweetheart, come to mommy, Devin calmly replies. Seher tells her look, your little bird knows how to fly! Seher turns to the drop. No, no, no, Devin calls out, stop! Devin makes her way towards Seher and slides down a small muddy hill. Did you pick flowers for me, she asks, those are my favorite flowers. Devin inches closer and holds out her hand, come on, sweetheart. Seher is very confused.

The rest of the family show up, shouting for grandma. Seher spots Hulya and becomes agitated. She begs her mother (Devin) to keep Hulya away from her. She follows me everywhere! Hulya shouts, that’s enough! Devin holds up her hand for Hulya to shut up and stay back.

Devin tries hard to calm the hysterical Seher. Seher begins to slip but Devin manages to pull Seher into a hug. Seher cries in Devin’s arms. I feel so alone, mother, you have no idea how much I’ve missed you. Devin comforts Seher, I’ve missed you too, sweetheart. Hulya’s not happy.

Back at the house, Ibo plays the devoted son. He kisses his mother’s hand and thanks Devin, who has her arm around Seher. Seher rests her head on Devin’s shoulder.

Ibo warns Hulya if this happens again, he won’t be so calm. Hulya fires back, if it wasn’t for me, she’d be in a nursing home. If she were, Ibo answers, she wouldn’t have gone missing. Ibo tells Aslan to be careful who he trusts. Aslan tells him to get out.

fam2 #4 part 2

Aslan smiles at granny and she calls him Cihan! He reminds her he’s Aslan.

Hulya orders Ceylan to put Seher to bed. Ceylan's not happy but she obeys.

Leyla wants to get Devin a change of clothes. Hulya says she will see to it and Devin goes with her. Lol, Devin comes back wearing Hulya’s clothing. Not very flattering. Aslan comments, couldn’t she have borrowed Leyla’s? Tolga adds that Devin could wear a smaller size.

Ceylan returns. She got Seher cleaned up but couldn’t get her to sleep. She looks at Devin and laughs. She asks Hulya, did you get a clone, mom? Everyone laughs except Hulya.

Hulya asks Devin to sit, and she thanks her on behalf of the family. Devin was happy to help. Aslan is stone faced. I guess he knows what’s coming. Hulya continues, you didn’t just help, your ability to adapt provided us with peace of mind.

Hulya turns to Aslan, you saw her, right? She talked Grandma into thinking she was her mother and brought her to her side. She turns back to Devin to add, and the confidence with which you raised your hand to stop me… in any case this will be the last time you do this for us. You won’t be involved in our family’s affairs.

Ceylan speaks up, why? If they get married, she will always be around. Hulya quickly answers, absolutely not, it’s too soon. Aslan pipes up, it’s late. We should go. Devin says wait. She has a question for Hulya Hanım. What do you mean by “it’s too soon”?

Hulya clarifies—you’ve just met. That’s what I meant. The older generation says, [Turkish] there is remorse in hurrying, salvation in peace. [They substituted the Spanish “no por tanto madrugar amanece mas temprano”. They translated that as, “time will take its course”, but I think it’s closer to “getting up early doesn't mean dawn comes earlier”]

Don’t look at me like that, Hulya says, [Turkish] your generation is full of broken people who think everyone is as broken as they are. Devin drops a bomb on Hulya, I guess this will shock you, but just before we got here, I asked Aslan to marry me. Aslan is stunned. The family turns to see Hulya’s reaction. We go to commercial with a staring contest between Devin and Hulya.

When we return, Aslan and Devin are walking to the car. Devin turns and waves at the family who is watching. Family waves back. Wow, Tolga says, she proposed immediately. Leyla says she’s happy for them. Ceylan quips, she will make a man out of Aslan. Hulya takes exception to the remark. That’s not what I meant, Ceylan replies.

Hulya tells Ceylan she’s in charge of watching after Seher until they find a new aide. Ceylan protests. It's not up for discussion.

Devin asks Aslan why he was upset with Seher. What happened between you and Cihan? Aslan explains that Cihan is the black sheep of the family. [the black sheep of a mafia family?] We don’t talk to each other unless absolutely necessary. We don’t bring it up. But I’ll say this, if he ever approaches you, notify me at once.

Devin asks him if he’s angry she mentioned the proposal. She admits that Hulya knows how to push her buttons. She’s sorry, she couldn’t help it. Is she’s the only one, Aslan asks. Devin smiles and places her hand on Aslan’s—you know how to push my buttons, too.

fam2 #4 part 3

Aslan moves his hand away. I’m not angry, he says, you saved us tonight. She invites him upstairs for coffee to celebrate her heroic act. She leans in. [maybe she has some sweets to serve too?] Aslan makes an excuse—Yagmur is inside, and I don’t want to bother her. Some other time.

Devin backs off. She says she’d like to introduce him to her friends, and he says okay. She bids him a goodnight and gives him the two-cheek kiss.

Next morning, Hulya asks Aslan if Devin is pregnant. Aslan answers, Ya Allah’im sen bana sabir (God, give me patience). Is that what you think? Then why are you rushing to get married, Hulya asks. He tells her to get to the point.

Hulya obliges. An unassuming psychologist comes into your life, not your type. Mother is bipolar, sister is sick, and their father wants nothing to do with them. Why? Aslan asks, you think she’s a gold digger? Not everyone thinks like you, he says. Devin doesn’t value the same things you do.

Aslan points out that she’s ruined Leyla’s life by hooking her up with Tolga. I’m next? Hulya says if he’s getting married, she will have a prenup put together. Aslan doesn't let his mother walk away. Do you think she will sign the prenup and if we break up, nothing happens. Do it. Hulya says she has no plan but joining the Soykans comes at a price. Tell your girlfriend that your BIL signed one, it’s a family rule.

Aslan’s driver, Iskoç, looks at his phone. Social media reports, “Aşk Sarhoşu Aslan Soykan!” – Drunk in love Aslan Soykan! There’s a picture of Aslan and Devin at the party. Aslan tells him he’s going to drive. Isko doesn’t show Aslan the pic.

Tolga is outside the gate, on the phone with someone. He says, I can’t do that. I’ve already gone too far. Aslan watches, if I make a mistake… Aslan almost runs Tolga down. He wants to know who Tolga is speaking to. Tolga lies, it’s my mother.

Aslan comments on Tolga’s new watch. He asks, is the salary we pay enough for you to afford it? Tolga is offended. Aslan asks him how much the watch cost. Tolga claims it was a gift. Aslan warns him to watch his spending.

Hulya calls Devin. They didn’t get a chance to talk. She was shocked by the proposal news. She thought it was a joke. But she feels better after speaking to Aslan. You were serious, she tells Devin, I wanted to congratulate you. May God bless you both.

Devin wonders how Hulya got her phone number. Hulya says Aslan gave it to her and she wants to invite Devin for dinner. A chance to get to know each other better. Devin turns down the invite, I have plans with Aslan tonight. Didn’t he mention it? Hulya lies and says, yes, she forgot. Another time then. This will be tougher than Hulya thought.

Devin arrives at her office. She’s worried about being late. The woman tells her that a Mr. Sadik just arrived. Devin apologizes to Sadik for being a bit late and will extend the session. We see that Sadik is Aslan’s brother, Cihan, but it looks like she doesn’t recognize him. [Cihan has borrowed Josie Zambrano’s (from El Conde) brilliant sunglasses disguise.] She asks him, so what brings you here?

fam2 #4 part 4

Aslan and Isko arrive at a hotel (one of his businesses) and see Aysel checking out. Is there anything you’d like to tell me, she asks. I waited for you, but you never came to see me. It was pointless, he replies, I knew you had company.

We heard the news, Aysel says, your girlfriend Devin is very pretty. You’re finally seeing a psychologist [snarky!] We didn’t get a chance to talk about our relationship. But I see you’re open about your relationship with Devin. Are you in love? Aslan takes his time to answer. He looks her over and quips, where’s your makeup? Be sure to wear some next time. I hardly recognize you without it.

Aslan and Isko walk away. He asks Isko, how does she know about Devin? Isko says it’s leaked video from Ati’s party. Aslan had no idea and he’s ticked. He tells Isko not to let anyone bother Devin. Stop the leaks on the internet. Delete everything.

Eko and Turgut are waiting in Aslan’s office. Turgut shows Eko something on his phone. Eko worries, don’t let Aslan see it. Aslan walks in on this. He wants to see the phone. “Atilla Ozyilmaz announced that he, along with Ibrahim Soykan, will work on a documentary about infamous gangster, Yusuf Soykan.”

Therapy session begins. “Sadik” begins, what do I do now doctor? Lie down? Not necessary, Devin replies, you don’t have to address me as doctor, Mr. Sadik. We don’t receive a medical degree. Allah, Allah, Sadik replies, don’t you heal people’s souls? You could say that, Devin answers.

Sadik removes his sunglasses and says, then you’re a doctor. Devin’s demeanor changes. I see that you like metaphors she says. He replies, they say that there ar some wounds in life… that eat you up inside, they devour your existence. Like leprosy. That’s why I’m here, because of these wounds. See?

She sees now—Cihan Soykan, right? You read Sadik Hidayet? Vay be, I see my name and reputation reached you before we met, he replies, yes, Cihan Soykan. I prefer to keep a low profile. Sadik Hidayet is fine for now. [Sadik (Sadegh) Hidayet was an Iranian writer. Maybe Cihan is quoting Hidayet.]

Devin asks, how did you find me? He says it was fate. I manage a restaurant (a kebapci, kebab house). Yesterday, someone I hadn’t seen in a while dropped by. We talked about many things. That’s how I know. Flashback to Hulya talking about Devin.

I’ll ask this once, Devin poses, why are you here? What’s the motive for your visit? I’m here for a session, he replies, aren’t you a psychologist? I’m depressed. She says, I’m dating your brother. He knows that—does she want his blessing? Devin tells him it’s unethical for her to treat her partner’s relatives.

Relative, Cihan laughs, I’m related to your boyfriend? May I say something? You’re the only one who sees me as a part of the family. Thanks. Now I can fill you in. Devin sits back. Cihan asks, do you know what a bilge is? It’s in the underbelly of a ship. Tar, oil, trash goes there. One day the bilge is full. You go out to sea and press a button… and the bilge empties. Cihan continues, let’s say the Soykans are a ship. I’m the bilge.

Aslan is angry with that 70 year old geezer of an uncle who is trying to clean his reputation at the expense of his family. What will happen when he destroys everything? Why not go to the police instead of making a documentary? Aslan starts drinking. Turgut asks him, are you sure you can clean this up? I think Turgut is worried what will happen when all the dirt is uncovered. When have I ever put you in danger, Aslan asks. Turgut stops the questions.

fam2 #4 part 5

Eko mentions a car he saw online. [Turkish] It looks like Uncle Ramiz’s car, he says, he’s the one who helped me with my business. Aslan stops him—are you still writing about us? Eko stutters, no, not anymore. I’m writing about other things. A story about gunmen. Aslan smacks Eko and grabs him. Isko pulls him away. Aslan shouts at Eko—there’s no script! Get rid of it! Eko says okay. Aslan and Isko leave.

Aslan has asked Ibo for a meet up. Ibo’s guy tells Isko are we so afraid of a documentary? He adds, the truth reveals itself sooner or later. Much like idiots, Isko replies.

Ibo asks for an update on Seher. She’s fine. Then Ibo wants to get to the point. What are you doing, Aslan asks, what’s this about a documentary? What are you going to say? I assume you want to come off as a hero. No, Ibo replies, I’m just going to tell the truth. You shouldn’t fear the truth. Until today, everyone listens to you. They respect you. They should know the truth.

Aslan says no one is interested in Ibo or Yusuf’s story. Do you know what they want to know? They want the story of a former criminal who got depressed and blew his brains out. They want the aftermath of his actions. We have a lot of skeletons in our closet and I’m trying to clean it up. If you keep this up, one of us will end up like dad. If you insist on doing this, if you want to be selfish and betray us, do it. I’ll drag you to Hell.

Ibo smirks and pats Aslan on the cheek. Are you scared of the business? Let me tell you. The top dogs don’t resolve things with threats. Ask me how I know… it’s because I was born way before your father knew you. Yusuf was your father, but he was my brother, too. I won’t ask my nephew for his blessing.

Ibo walks away. Then turns. Aslan, this is only the beginning. There will be a sequel. Get ready. It will be good.

Cihan is determined to continue with the session. Devin tells him they are through. She can’t treat him. She can refer him… No, he doesn't want that. He offers to pay twice her charges and ahead of time. He tells her, I have a lot to say. He slaps a wad of big bills on the table.

Devin has a better idea. She tells him to take his money and leave her office. She stands up and folds her arms to make it final. Cihan gets up and walks over to her and gets threateningly close. She takes a small step back. Cihan turns away and notices his mother’s clothes hanging (the ones that Devin borrowed and had cleaned). He’s stunned.

Before he leaves, Cihan tells Devin, you are a very brave woman. If my father had a doctor as brave as you, he would have been saved.

And we are out.

Wow Dondi, are you also fluent in the Turkish language! That recap was amazing. I watched up to Grandma on the cliff. I will probably get more from the show reading your recap, then watching it.

Wish I had time to revel in your recap, dondi, and to comment about another really interesting episode, but I have to hit the road. My granddaughter's big birthday/Halloween party is tonight and it's a two-hour drive to get there for me. Something to look forward to when I get home.

Dondi, thank you VERY much for yet another superlative recap. It clarified a lot for me, and I also enjoyed your side comments, especially "[Cihan has borrowed Josie Zambrano’s (from El Conde) brilliant sunglasses disguise.]"

We get yet another indication of Hulya's nastiness when she immediately fires the aide who was drawing Grandma Seher's bath when Grandma snuck out.

I'm wondering whether Grandma's calling Aslan Cihan means that perhaps Cihan is also a good (though rather disturbed) guy. It makes me take his statement to Devin later about her being the only one who regards him as part of the family as another possibly positive sign. But on the other hand, his coming to see Devin also seems to be an indication of his unhealthy attraction to Aslan's girlfriends, and why Aslan warns Devin that she should tell him if Cihan comes to see her.

We get more of the on-the-one-hand and on-the-other-hand from Hulya, who says quite emphatically that Devin will not be involved in the family's affairs and a bit later seems to welcome her into the family and says "May God bless you both." But there's little doubt in my mind that Hulya means the first statement and not the second.

I'm still not clear about the family business and Aslan's role in it. And I'm still unsure who some of the characters are. Ibo is Aslan's uncle Abraham, I think, but who is Atilla Ozyilmaz? Is he a business rival? And who is Eko? I gather he is somehow involved in the proposed documentary that Aslan opposes. Is Eko related to any of the other characters? Finally (for now), who is Isko? Questions, questions, questions. I'm almost always confused at the start of a new dizi/novela, but somehow this one confuses me more. Thank heaven for the recaps, without which I'd have thrown in the towel.

Wow, Dondi, thank you for providing us with every moment.

Lots of toxic people in this show . I suppose who are the good guys and who are the bad guys will become clearer.

Usually novelas and dizis present a good family and a not so good family , but both Devin and Alan's family are toxic. Yikes.
OT ..Dondi..I started watching season 2 of Another Self on Netflix , but I can't remember season one !

Juanita- I think Eli and Isko are employees. Or henchmen, depending on what Aslan’s business actually is. Ati I’m not sure if. I got the impression he was a cousin or family of some sort but maybe just a family friend. Or family frenemy?

I’m still catching up myself thanks to Dondi! I watched but miss things.

I wish we could at least hear the Turkish music (as others have said) to go along with some of the cultural differences, like the kissing and putting the forehead on the hand of an elder, as Devin did to Grandma Sehan the first time they met. But you’d think with all that money they could hire TWO aides.

Thanks, everyone. Glad you found the recap helpful.

Kat, I am not, nor will I ever be fluent in Turkish. I only wish. I’ve learned some by doing Duolingo, and I watch a lot of dizis and movies. I always have a Turkish dictionary handy. I’ve done a lot of reading about Turkish history and culture over the years.

Juanita:

Ibo is Aslan’s Uncle Ibrahim, also brother of the late Yusuf Soykan

Atilla Ozyilmaz (Ati) is in the entertainment (TV and streaming) business. He wants to do the documentary about Yusuf. Aslan and Devin went to the party he hosted on the day of his uncle’s funeral.

Aslan’s “employees”: Iskoç (Isko) is Aslan’s driver. He’s the man who picked up Aslan from the airport in the first episode. Ekrem (Eko) and Turgut are the other two guys always with Aslan. Turgut is the chubby guy and Eko is the thinner guy who fancies himself a scriptwriter.

“Lots of toxic people in this show. I suppose who are the good guys and who are the bad guys will become clearer.” ITA, Susan. We know that things are not always as they seem at first in a dizi or TN. PS I enjoyed the second season of “Another Self”. I heard they will have a third season.

K, I check back to the Turkish episodes for edits, and I usually post links to the Turkish songs. Sorry I’ve neglected to do that so far. I’ve been short on time and a little lazy. I’ll try to do better. My focus has been on clearer Turkish to Spanish to English translations. I’m finding a lot of changes in the dialog.

Thanks very much, K and dondi, for your help in identifying who's who.

fam2

Dondi, thank you for all that background info and explanation of who's who.

Kat in SC: Awesome job with the recap of Friday evening's episode. I've got a bad vibe that Ana MIGHT not be among the living if Crazy Goldie Locks is hell-bent on increasing the Body Count.

PS: Mirna needs to WATCH HER OWN BACK too because Crazy Goldie Locks will do almost anything to keep her dirty little secrets stay secret forever.

On Francisco/Emilio's revenge plans: I've got a feeling it'll be way too slow & ultimately blow up in his face.

Wow! Such a terrific recap! I really appreciate your including the Turkish dichos that are being replaced with less cogent ones in Spanish.

Hulya made a big point about her not putting her mother-in-law in a nursing home. That she hasn't seems out of character for her, especially revisiting the premiere where Seher went on and on emphasizing Hulya's evil deeds. Maybe it's: keep your friends close...etc.

I am noticing that Hulya rules the roost, but we see the downtrodden daughters getting in some passive-aggressive digs once in a while.

Devin seems more than ready to push Hulya's buttons.

Must be nice to order someone to wipe the internet of things you don't like.

I'm picking up another dizi characteristic. Things begin for the characters sort of in full action. We don't get much background info. Viewerville is left to put together the pieces of the puzzle.

I was actually shocked seeing Cihan showing up with a false name to try to get close to Devin. So...is this like a sexual fetish for him? Or sibling rivalry, wanting to get a toy from his brother, even a discarded one? In any case I'm pretty sure it's unhealthy. That bilge monologue was very creepy.

fam2

Gracias, Dondi. Riveting recap.

Seher seemed to like the "Cihan" that she mistakenly called Aslan. Maybe Cihan wasn't such a bad guy in the past, but he's definitely a mess now. Got my fingers crossed that Devin will indeed tell Aslan about Cihan's visit.

I'm not sure if Aslan is such a good boss. He doesn't seem to treat his underlings very well.

Tolga made me laugh when he said Hulya's outfit was too big for Devin. I was all ready for him to be the lovable doofus in the family, not a snake in the grass feeding info to Aslan's enemies.

OT/Amor Prohibido

The Turkish dizi Amor Prohibido moved to a new hourtime at 11/10c PM.
