I am very, very late to the party. Was out and about most of the day. Thanks a million, dondi, for that terrific recap. I really appreciate your filling in the Telemundo blanks.
I felt like cheering when I saw what Devin did to Hulya's nameplate.
I enjoy it when Aslan teases Devin. He told her she broke his foot when he put it in the door. And how could any woman resist the guy when he gets that close?
Again, I seem to miss things. I didn't know Aslan had really bought the buyers off of Nese's house. I believed him when he told her he did not. Yes, he is lying a lot more than a male protagonist who gets a HEA should do. The prospective buyers said Ergun could keep the deposit. Aslan probably made them whole.
Cihan needs to get Aysel out of his life. She's nothing but poison.
Thanks for filling in the earlier part about Zeynep on her way to being a menace. I guess I thought she was an innocent who was merely spouting the party line about not speaking to "the help". But it seems she prefers hierarchy.
I am a bit confused about Cihan's dream. I thought it was meant to be a flashback, and he really was asleep on the sofa when Yusuf blew his brains out. But what dondi wrote sounded to me like he was dreaming the scene that meant he was guiltless about his father's death.
I also wondered about whether Leyla might be falling for the doctor. But probably dondi is right....that they don't put scenes of same sex lovers in dizis. Telenovelas are now all in. Every one I've seen lately has a couple like that somewhere.
#12 – Part 1 of 4
I am having a lot of angst watching Hulya at work. She’s diabolical. I have an aversion to controlling people and have quit more than one job at the first sign of that behavior. I’ll be the best employee you could hope for if I have freedom to do things my way, to make improvements if I see the need.
Cihan: should we be surprised at how extremely screwed up he is? The writers have Viewerville zigzagging between pity and anger. He’s very threatening toward Devin. He blames her for his re-living his father’s death (if that’s how it really happened).
Hulya, aka The Spider, calls Nese and invites her to the house in the country to review el ajuar (trousseau) of the bride. Nese agrees, and we get a shot of Hulya’s face scheming in her head.
Cihan calms down. He keeps bringing up Aslan, alluding somehow to their both being victims.
We see Nese admiring the trousseau while Yagmur looks on, worried. Nese peeks longingly at some other clothes in a closet. [Are they at the mansion; are these Hulya’s clothes she’s envying? Like always, I have a problem knowing where these people are.] Hulya seems to know everyone’s weakness. Yagmur and Ceylan decide to leave them to it, saying the two consuegras are getting along like uña y mugre. [Consuegro o consuegra is what you call the mother or father of your daughter in law or son in law. I love that Spanish has a word for that. And the fingernail and the dirt under it is a common simile in Spanish for people getting along well.]
The family lawyer calls Hulya to tell her Devin has applied officially to keep her own name. Hulya blows up. [But I think she’s faking it for Nese’s benefit.] She asks the lawyer not to let this get to the press. Nese, of course, overhears.
Back to Cihan, who still mystifies me: damaged victim or devious agent of his mother against Devin? He says she’ll be isolated in “that house”. “It will seem as if she’s been dropped from an airplane. But, of course, she’ll have a parachute…Aslan.” Then he says no (meaning Aslan won’t be there for her). “Hulya has already made you miserable.”
Neurotic Nese turns on her own child. She says she’s ashamed of her daughter. [I’m sure Hulya managed to get the whole story of Nese’s weaknesses before this kind invitation.] Nese gets agitated and says that Ergun destroyed their family. She also says she’ll talk to her daughter (presumably pressure her to not keep her own name).
#12 – Part 2 of 4
Cihan tells Devin about the three letters Yusuf left: for Cihan, for Aslan, and for Ebo. [No letters to his daughters, I notice.] Cihan again, against Devin’s wishes, brings up Aslan. He says Aslan never opened his father’s letter, that he was scared to do so. Cihan says the letter he got just depressed him. He gets up seeming to say this will be the end of his confiding in her. Devin either falls into the trap or Cihan is really a good guy who needs help. She promises to break her code of ethics about treating family members and continue to treat him. [Pretty sure this will blow up in her face.] She says she wants to keep him from taking his father’s path (suicide, I presume she means).
Yagmur has begun to take Ceylan under her broken wing. She says that Ceylan can stay overnight in her house (Devin’s apartment, I think), and they can go out together to that party Ati invited Ceylan to attend.
Devin is in her car and gets a notice about the funds deposited in her account (the daughter-in-law salary) and storms into the mansion furious. Hulya says it’s a tradition and, rubbing salt in the wound, asks if Devin thought it wasn’t enough. Leyla sees the coming storm and puts a hand over her eyes. Devin asks her MIL what she’s trying to do. She says that Hulya can’t hide the offense behind false good intentions. Aslan walks in. He does manage to tell Hulya she should have consulted him first.
Devin says she makes a good living and she’s going to return this asqueroso sueldo de nuera (disgusting daughter-in-law salary). Aslan: “You called it daughter-in-law salary? Layla pipes up that, yes, this is offensive.
Ati is angry with Ibo for not protecting him from Aslan. And Ibo hasn’t given him the money he promised. [He doesn’t have it because Aslan blew up the warehouse with the drugs inside.] Ibo gives Ati the letter from his brother (or what he says is that letter) that contains the sins that caused Yusuf to kill himself and that he forced his brother to share his crimes. Despicable Ati’s eyes glow at what this will do for the documentary he’s planning.
[I’m starting to think we can’t believe what any of these people say, with the exception of Devin.]
Aslan doesn’t seem to see his mother for what she really is. He asks her why she described it as daughter-in-law salary. Hulya: “I wanted her to feel part of the family. I wanted her to come see the trousseau, but she refused.” [Is this a Turkish custom; the in-laws surprise the bride with the sexy undies?] Hulya goes on: “She refused the chauffeur and car I provided. She said that at the table about our not letting Saher say goodbye.” He agrees that was inappropriate but wants her to get back to what he wanted to say. “Anything you do with my wife, ask me first!” Hulya: “You’re giving your mother warnings about a woman you’ve barely met! I’m hurt.”
This doesn’t work as well as she’d hoped. He tells her he’s going to take his wife out to dinner. Hulya gets almost hysterical about this. She says she won’t permit his leaving the family table. But she’s saying it to his back.
#12 – Part 3 of 4
As they leave Devin feels a bit guilty, but he assures her that they’ll have a romantic dinner. He tries on one of his good jokes (at least I like them). “How much did they pay you? Maybe you can lend me a million or so.”
Hulya is so furious about their leaving that she doesn’t make any fuss when Ceylan says she’s spending the night at a friend’s house. She makes a call to that lawyer.
[I get distracted by Ibo’s bad toupee. Is it me or is that a thing in dizis? Are Turkish men vain about their hair loss?]
Aslan takes Devin to his club. Turgot smiles from ear to ear when he sees her. A woman named Cansin, in a slinky evening gown, drapes herself all over Aslan. Turgot looks completely disgusted. He’s completely in Devin’s camp, I think. Aslan introduces the woman to his wife. Cansin says something about Aslan having read some poetry to her by Orhan Veli. Aslan whisks her upstairs.
Ceylan and Yagmur are dancing in some club. It seems that this is the party Ati invited her to. They’re drinking vodka. Yagmur ignores a call from Eko. Ati puts some moves on Ceylan. [Uh oh! Next time it won’t be a soft landing from Aslan’s helicopter.] Ati is so smarmy and disgusting and about 20 years older than Ceylan. He offers to buy her a drink, winking at the bartender. I’m thinking date rape drug until I realize that I think they might be at one of Aslan’s clubs and the bartender wouldn’t be in on something like that.
Aslan and Devin are on the second floor of what I know is one of his clubs. He’s grilling steaks. She teases him about the poetry. “Are you jealous”, he asks. He tells her that he might have spouted poetry when he was drunk. She brings up a serious topic, saying that he always evades questions from her with jokes.
Yagmur sees a guy at the club. [I think I should know why she’s frightened, but it’s gone from my memory banks. Please fill in if you know.] He says that she accused him of having something to do with the death of a prostitute [??] He calls her Hande, not Yagmur, and shows her he’s packing a pistol.
Looks like the bad guy did them a favor. Because Yagmur hustles Ceylan right out of Ati’s clutches. The guy with the gun tells Ati that Yagmur is a prostitute, something about putting $1,000 in her pocket and she’ll do wonders. He wants Ati to get him her address.
Devin asks Aslan why he doesn’t seem to have friends. He says they wouldn’t hang with him after he took over the Soykan businesses. Also, he was in a bad place after his father died, and he pushed everyone away. She asks if he cried when his father died. He laughs ironically. His father said that men don’t ever cry. That’s for weaklings. If he had cried, his father would have risen from his tomb and hit him.
#12 – Part 4 of 4
She kind of goes therapist on him. She says he hasn’t really properly grieved, just like his grandmother. He looks like he’s agreeing with her when something changes. She asks if his father left a note. He glares at her. “Where’d you get that from?” She’s taken aback but says that sometimes suicides do. Aslan, curtly, “He didn’t leave anything.” Another lie.
Yagmur wants to get away from the club and is scared when cabs aren’t stopping. She calls Eko.
We see another scene between Ebo and Hulya. He again shows up at the mansion. He looks maybe a bit drunk. He says it’s been too much for him. She left 45 years ago. Five years ago, Yusuf left. “One can’t avoid destiny. Am I a bad man according to you?” She tells him she won’t let the guards kill him; she’ll do it herself. Ibo: “I’ve never regretted anything I did for you.” Looking like a beaten dog, he walks away.
Eko and Yagmur are, I think, in Devin’s apartment. Ceylan is asleep. He’s worried about Hulya finding out about this. He intuits something happened at the club, but she won’t own up to it. [Yagmur does not deserve a sweetie like Eko.] He tells her why he blew up at her at the hospital. He lost his father to drugs. He tells her how much she means to him, and he doesn’t want to lose another loved one. At least Yagmur’s tough cookie expression softens.
Hulya gets a text from the lawyer about the news having spread.
Devin sees the news on her phone about her keeping her name. Aslan grabs her phone and gets indignant. She tells him she put this in motion before they married. And he agreed to it. He reads a bunch of nasty comments posted after the first post. He jumps up. “It’s best if we leave.”
She’s asleep in the car when they get back. He’s curt with her. She says she’ll stay in the car. He argues a bit, then throws his overcoat in for her. Hulya peeks out the window and smirks.
The next morning, we see that he’s slept on a sofa in their bedroom. Mommy Dearest brings him coffee. She doesn’t hesitate to tell him she knows where Devin spent the night. She tells him he knows how much she adores him. She’s worried about his suffering. She says that, while she and his father had problems, they always slept in the same bed. He says that he’s not his father, nor is Devin Hulya. Aslan says that his father was that way with them all. But my marriage is different. It’s a special affection. I want you to get to know her.
Hulya says that Devin is pulling him away from his family, his name. He asks her if she knows how much he loves her. He says that won’t ever change. He takes her hands and pleads: “Please, stop this. Devin has already given in, living every day in this nuthouse. Who would want to live with a bunch of crazies like us? Treat her well. She’s part of the family. She’s now a Soykan. Accept her. “
We close on Hulya just staring at him. Why do I think she’s thinking: “In your dreams, my son.”?
Kat in SC: I'm assuming you're doing the recap of last night's episode ?
Novelera, I loved your recap! In addition to helping me figure out what happened (I kept dozing off last night), I especially appreciated your discussing your very interesting responses to the episode.
Yes, I too noticed that Yusuf didn't bother writing notes to his daughters (or any other women, as far as we know). In his eyes, apparently only men really mattered. I wonder what his marriage was really like.
I loved your observation, "Yagmur has begun to take Ceylan under her broken wing."
And I'm beginning to feel as you do that the only person we can trust in this dizi is Devin.
So did Ibo want to marry Hulya but she chose Yusuf instead? Or someone else chose Yusuf for her? Ibo still seems to care a lot for her. (Frankly, I find it difficult to believe that anyone could care for her, but perhaps she was different when she was young?)
I don't have much else to say except ¡Muchísimas gracias!
Novelera ,thank you for that excellent account of every detail.
Yes, Yusuf doesn't appear to have valued the women in his life. Unfortunately, that hasn't changed for some people. I have a family full of girls and women, and even the dogs are female. Fortunately, the men in my family value and like females.
I can understand Aslan's bond with his awful mother.I have taught young guys from certain cultures who have very strong ties to their mothers. That works in your favor if you are their female teacher.l
Ibo certainly Seems to have a thing for the dragon lady...a mystery. They must have a history. Maybe Ibo can't forget his first love . she must have been very different in her youth. Susan
Gracias, Novelera. Beautiful recap. I too loved your reference about Yagmur taking Ceylan under her "broken wing."
Oh boy, now I can't stand Nese, dissing her own daughter with Hulya like that. Unlike Nese, Yagmur seemed to get that Hulya was up to dirty business against her sister.
Not sure if this was shown in the Telemundo version, but in the original [going by the English caption - I speak no Turkish] Aslan's old flame (or whatever) dedicates a song to him. He denies the song is dedicated to him but Devin enjoys teasing him about it. The singer comes to their table and suggests a song (or something) and Aslan quickly shoos her replying that Devin's sister is a singer, but not Devin. Devin takes the mike where they stand and sings beautifully. Take that, Aslan! :>
Of course Hulya's lawyer knew she wanted Devin's name petition in the press when she told him to keep it out of the press. I hope one day they get their signals crossed and he does the opposite of what she intends.
Great recap, novelera. Love that you always include a vocab lesson for us.
Devin and Aslan are both lying to each other. Aslan is worse.
Diabolical is a good description for Hulya.
Yes, I think Nese was ogling Hulya’s clothes. Now Hulya has Nese on her side.
In the dizis I’ve seen, the bride’s family is usually in charge of the trousseau (çeyiz). But I’ve seen the groom’s family send something before the wedding. Hmm… can’t recall if there were sexy undies. Lol
For now, I think of Cihan as damaged victim. Of course, that can change.
Ah, Orhan Veli. We heard one of his poems in Fatmagül. Kerim recited it to Fatma at the country house. "I am listening to Istanbul with my eyes closed” Beautiful poem and scene.
Edit: Cansin sings “Yaramızda Kalsın” and prompts the crowd to join in the song. She asks Aslan, won’t you sing. He declines. What about Devin? Aslan answers, Devin can’t sing but her sister can. Devin grabs Cansin’s mic and belts out the song. Serenay has a great voice. You should watch.
Song: Yaramızda Kalsın/Let it Stay in Our Wound

I’m very curious to see Ati’s documentary. I wonder if it will ever be made.
Ibo Amca is pitiful.
I’ve got tonight’s recap, and it will be up tomorrow.
Donde, oh my...now you made me want to watch " Fatmagul" again . I am almost at the end of " Amor Prohibido"...yikes . What a sea of tears. Susan
Does she really sing like that or did they dub someone in? If that’s her, I can’t believe TM would cut it. That’s one heck of a mic drop.
Is Turkey really so conservative when it comes to women’s last names? I get that it doesn’t always go over well here either, but she has to apply to NOT take his name? The only other Turkish show I saw was La Sultana, which had an amazing tiara game but not exactly indicative of current rules. I hope.
K
K, that's Serenay's voice. Either Telemundo is too cheap to pay for the original soundtracks or they think we can't appreciate Turkish songs.
Thanks, all. I appreciate the mention, maybe by dondi, that this might only be 30 episodes. It's intense, full of dialog with hidden meanings, so sometimes I'm just wildly guessing when I describe what happened in a scene.
Juanita, I'm right there with you, burning with curiosity about what went on with Ibo and Hulya long ago. 45 years since she left him seems to definitely rule out Ibo being Aslan's father.
Susan, yes, we can be sure Hulya was less diabolical and maybe more charming back in the day. Maybe we'll get some flashbacks with younger actors portraying what went on.
I think the Anon who mentioned hating Nese dissing her own daughter might have been you, K. Let's see if I'm a good detective of turns of phrase. I suspect we're meant to believe that Nese might have been fairly neurotic to begin with but that living with and then being left by that awful Ergun probably messed her up even more. I think Devin is used to her behavior and won't take it that much to heart when Nese tries to influence Devin.
Dondi, I suspect you're right about Cihan. He could end up being an ally of Devin, but I dread the day Aslan finds out she's treating him.
Thanks for the clip of Serenay singing in the club. I agree that Telemundo is just butchering some music that would enhance the dizis they show.
K., I am also shocked that a woman would have to go to that much effort, and presumably expense, to keep her own name.
Novelty’s- Nope! Not me. I didn’t realize those were Devins clothes. I thought they were actually Hulya’s and maybe Hulya was handing them down? It’s only a little less weird than what was really happening. I would die before letting my family pick out my wedding night chonies. I doubt mom would like it any better. And if Devin is a grown woman with her own apartment and business, she doesn’t need help picking out clothes, especially not from Hulya!
K
novelera, I mentioned that the original Turkish dizi was 30 episodes. Those eps are between 2 and 2 1/2 hours long. There are edits in our version. So we get about 2 eps for every Turkish ep. Still shorter than the average TN.
I QUESS/HOPE...Friday recap is heading in soon[Saturday/Sunday??]
...So..with this in mind[ful] and in order to stay out of CARAY CARAY 'jail'.[hopefully]....

So, because of her pimp/groomer Eugenio puling her ear and brain cells ... She has never thought abt her own personal wealth??savings/401k/403b nothing, maybe a stash of gold /diamond jewelry for rainy day..
This chick/bimbo is dumber that a street hustler...[on drugs]..
No ,she isn't even worth of that comparison ...those women got it together... even they have enough sense to hide money from their pimp/daddies...
I'm starting to wonder. Can she be all that dangerous or is she JUST RECKLESS...she deserves to burn.!!!
HOW stupid. CAN YOU BE--? [I am going to marry my pimp, and we will have a family]..All that bimbo-'choochie'.. flaunting .and in Miami..!!!... the land of playboys...and she hasn't [pulled] another oldaszz sugar daddy....as a side hustle..
What kind of failed Fem-Fatal- side chick is she.!...A real poor representation for the regular sluts that have $$$savings.
I am finally getting a chance to watch to Last 2 episodes . I can only interpret the usual clues, so I am grateful for the recaps. .
The teaming up of Yagmur and Ceylan can't be a good thing .
These people are all so screwed up. I am so glad them are in my orbit.
As for the trousseu, it used to be perfectly correct here for the bride to receive a tasteful peignour at her shower. Susan
I
Novelera, gracias for Thursday's epi. The anon was me. At this point, I am not sympathetic to Nese at all. Devin definitely didn't get her smarts, pride, and resiliency from her mom, but then her pops is no prize either. Shudder.
Sorry, this is a long one. There were important scenes and ridiculous edits. I couldn’t leave them out.
Aslan takes his coffee and heads outside to the car to see Devin. Günaydın… I brought you some coffee. He starts with the jokes. Would you like to live in the car? Not a bad idea. He calls out to Hava who is passing by. Hava Hanım, please bring our breakfast to the car. Devin shouts, he’s only joking!
Aslan starts to nibble on Devin’s neck. She stops him…we’re in the garden. They are all smiles. Apparently, the morning is wiser than the evening for these two. And all is well again. He picks up her phone and notes that her “fans” went silent. Devin says she closed her account. She had a thousand lousy comments. He says let’s go in the house.
Edit: Ceylan catches Yagmur and Eko sleeping on the couch. Eko panics. Ceylan, no one can know anything, okay? Ceylan laughs and gives them a ship name: #Ekmur. Yagmur tells Eko not to worry because if Ceylan outs them, then she will have to explain how she found out. Eko gets a call from Isko and has to leave.
Yagmur warns Ceylan not to get involved with slimy Ati. Stay away from him, don’t answer his calls. Ceylan says she will have nothing to do with that viejo. And as soon as Yagmur goes, Ceylan sends Ati a text.
Ati gets the text while he’s with Ibo. He’s smiling and he answers. Ibo asks, is it a woman? Ati just laughs it off. Ati asks Ibo about a rumor. It’s about Devin. They say her sister has a dark past. She was a prostitute in Izmir. Ibo is shocked. Ati says he heard it from a son of the Koruzade family. He adds that Ceylan was at the party, and she was with Devin’s sister. Another shocker for Ibo.
Ceylan asked me not to tell you or anyone else, Ati says, but I felt I had to tell you. All I ask is that you don’t give me away. Ibo replies, forget everything you just said, okay? Make sure the Koruzades don’t know she’s Aslan’s SIL.
Kemal tells Ibo that “the news broke”.
Edit: Aslan brings a cupcake with candle into Seher’s room and wishes her a happy birthday. Devin smiles in the background. Very sweet granny and grandson scene.
The sweetness is interrupted by a call to Aslan. Isko tells him that thieves broke into Yusuf’s office. Aslan asks, did they steal anything? Not known yet. Isko says they are on their way over there. He says there’s no need to come, but Aslan says he will meet them there.
Edit: Devin senses something is wrong and asks Aslan, what is it? Aslan replies, you said I had to take time to grieve. I’m going to do that now.
Aslan drives and stops to meet up with Cihan at a random location. He asks Cihan, did you bring it? Cihan hands over some keys. Cihan asks, what happened? I don’t know, Aslan replies, I’ll find out. Cihan asks, you want to go in there? Why would I ask for the keys if I didn’t, Aslan answers.
Cihan notes it’s been five years since Aslan’s been there. There’s a letter there, waiting for you. Don’t be afraid, it’s no use. Ikraa… almighty God’s first commandment [as revealed to Muhammed] is to read. Read… read the letter. Maybe you will understand why dad took his life.
Aslan is upset. Why did he do it? If you know, tell me. Tell us why the powerful Yusuf Soykan, a man who never cried, decided to shoot himself? Cihan replies, you didn’t know dad at all. Know why? You were too worried with nonsense. Read the letter. Maybe then you will get to know him. He pats Aslan and says, selametle (he's wishing Aslan to be safe and well on the way).
Keys were found at the crime scene. Cameras were erased. Aslan arrives and Eko tells him they broke in through the back during the shift change. Aslan asks, did they steal anything? Turgut says it’s a mess, we don’t know yet. Aslan asks about the safe. Turgut says if you have the key, you can check.
Tolga tells Hulya the foundation received a large donation from Devin. She wrote “my dowry.” Cue a smiling Devin to greet Hulya a good morning.
Kemal is recording Aslan and crew at the office. He sends it to Ibo. Ibo says, it’s time to fear dear Aslan. You will be afraid.
Cihan has a session with Devin. I can’t believe that so much of Cihan’s story was edited out! He explains his relationship with Yusuf and his last moments with him.
Devin asks him why he was so angry the other day. Because I kept quiet, Cihan says, because I was unable to answer. Devin asks, to whom would you like to answer? To my father, he replies, but I can’t reply to his suicide letter.
Start of edit: Devin asks him if he would like to speak about his father. He begins, I am the son of Yusuf Soykan. I grew up next to him. I was about 7 years old when he killed a man in front of me. Then he turned to me… and told me not to tell anyone… a man’s promise. I was only 7 and I was his black box. I made many promises. I was probably an idiot to keep all the promises.
Devin asks, what promises? Dad drank a lot, Cihan replies, and then he started crying. Yusuf Soykan, who said a man shouldn’t cry, sobbed in front of me. He talked about his sins, that there was a place in hell ready for him. He took a gun and put it to his head. I immediately jumped on him, holding his hand, begging him not to do this. I said I loved him, I wept with him. I held him by the leg. By the collar.
I don’t know if he felt sorry for me or if he was tired of me, Cihan says, but he put the gun away. Then he drank more and fell asleep. [I’m a little unclear on this next part.] Cihan says something happened in the evening, and again he gave his word to his father not to say anything.
I thought that’s how he showed his love for me, Cihan recounts, I didn’t tell anyone. Mom and Aslan are mad at me because I didn’t tell them. Supposedly, they would have found a way if I had told. We could have helped Yusuf Soykan. Yusuf Soykan, who no one can help. But nothing would have changed even if I told.
Cihan continues, Dad drank again, I thought he was about to fall asleep, and I fell asleep. And he… wrote letters and put them on the table and shot himself in the head. We see the flashback. This is the end of the edited dialog.
Cihan thinks maybe Aslan was right. Devin asks, what did Aslan do? He ignored it, Cihan says, he ignored his father’s death.
We see Aslan at the office building as Cihan continues speaking. In the last 5 years, he’s never visited the place where dad took his life. (Aslan approaches the office door.) The smart son, the mama’s boy… my mother is smart. She was smarter than dad, unfortunately. Smart people can also be cowards. They won’t open a letter because they were denied the right to reply. If they saw what was written in mine, they could live without opening theirs.
Aslan stands in front of the office door and summons the courage to put the key in the lock and enter.
Devin asks Cihan how he would feel if he could reply to the letter. Cihan says—fear.
Aslan sits in Yusuf’s chair. He looks up and his father’s blood is still on the ceiling.
Cihan continues, a fear of doing something I’ve never done before. The worst kind of fear. It’s a sin to talk back to Yusuf. You know, he’s not really dead. He lives on.
Aslan drinks some alcohol. He opens the safe. There’s the letter.
He always wanted to control us, Cihan says, and tell us what we could and could not do. We couldn’t go against his rules. As if he hadn’t done enough while he was alive, now even in death, we suffer for his sins.
Aslan removes the letter from the safe.
Devin asks, if you had the opportunity, what would you tell your father? Cihan begins, In the letter, you said I shouldn’t do some things, and honestly, I’m not doing what you asked. You asked me not to drink but I’m an alcoholic. You asked me to start a family, but I’m not even close to my family.
Another dialog edit for Cihan: I’d also tell him, this time you promise me. You will not interfere with my life. I’ll be like you. I will do what I want. If need be, I will shoot myself like you did. Dad, life is soup, and I am a fork. Let me stay like this. Cihan breaks down and apologizes.
Devin looks affected by this. She says, don’t apologize. Crying helps ease the pain. People mourn their parents after they pass. (We see Aslan holding the unopened letter.) [Turkish] If they can’t cry, that pressure becomes a deep wound. A person’s soul can suffer far more than the body. You’re not running from your feelings. You’re examining yourself while being vulnerable. You are brave enough to face your father’s ghost. That courage is the only thing that will save you.
Aslan takes the alcohol and the unopened letter with him. It’s riding in the passenger seat of his car. He looks as if he’s about to cry but doesn’t.
A messenger delivers clothes and handbags to Devin’s office. He had this address, and they are for Nese. There’s a card: İyi günlerde kullan, Neşeciğim, (Enjoy in good days, dear Nese) Hulya Soykan. Devin asks the man to take the things to her car.
Hava tells Hulya the items were delivered.
Devin confronts her mother. How could you? You are willing to use things with Hulya’s name on them? Don’t yell, Nese replies, I’m your mother. Devin shouts, that woman treated you like crap and you are putting up with it?! Why did you go to the house without telling me?
Nese says Hulya invited them, what should they have done? Devin is still on fire. She wants to humiliate us! She wants nothing else! She sent this crap to my office! Nese calls Devin rude and ungrateful. You joined their family. Don’t be a brat. Nese mentions the last name issue and questions why Devin would want to continue using her lousy father’s name.
Devin realizes that Hulya knew about the name thing before it reached the press. She leaves.
Aslan is so upset and maybe so drunk that he sees his father in the rear-view mirror.
Devin asks to have a word with Hulya in private. Hulya ignores her request, they are in the middle of preparing for dinner. It’s a bit chaotic. Seher thinks Yusuf has arrived. Devin asks again and Hulya puts her off for later.
Aslan picks up the letter and sets fire to a corner. He looks back and his father is gone. [please don’t burn the letter! I want to know what it says!]
Cihan shows up to dinner with flowers. The family, with exception of Hulya, is happy to see him. He tells Seher he came for her birthday. She asks, dad’s coming, right? Did he talk to you? Yes, we spoke and smoothed things over, Cihan replies, I feel much better. Cihan looks over at Devin. Devin is expressionless.
Hulya goes off to the kitchen and Devin follows her. She asks the staff to excuse them for a moment. Devin accuses Hulya of leaking the name issue to the press. You spend your days trying to control me. You gave my mother clothes and passed it off as kindness. You sent it to my office. I’m not the fool you take me for. All because we didn’t stay for dinner. Admit it.
Remember who you are talking to, Hulya admonishes, how can you accuse me? Know your place. I know my place and to whom I am speaking, Devin replies. What about you? I asked you to respect my privacy.
Aslan arrives and heads for the house.
Hulya accuses Devin of starting everything, and now she must take responsibility for her actions. Devin makes it plain that Hulya has been provoking her since she started dating Aslan. And now she is going after her family. Leave us alone!
Hulya calls Devin paranoid. Your mother warned me about you. I see she is right. I can’t expect someone who never felt the warmth of a home to adapt to a family like ours. She cites Devin’s father and her broken family.
Devin retorts, isn’t your family broken, too? Where is the unconditional love for a son you boast about? My father isn’t the only one who abandoned his children. Oops, Aslan is standing in the kitchen, and hears. He turns around and walks out. Devin follows.
Aslan takes his seat at the table. Devin is next to him. Seher asks Aslan, where is your father? Is he coming? He’s not coming, Aslan replies. Did you know that there are 5 stages of grief? Grandma, you are in the denial stage. I’m a lot like you. But we are supposed to experience our grief, face our fears. Grief buries us with pain.
Cihan tries to stop Aslan, but he continues, I’ve moved past denial. Do you know what comes next? Anger. Devin tries to stop Aslan. The anger is here, he says. He looks at Devin, weren’t you taught that therapy is for those who seek it? No one in this family wants therapy. You’re not our psychologist. You are the wife of a Soykan. Understand? Apologize to everyone!
Hulya tries to interrupt, although I expect she’s secretly enjoying this. He tells her not to interfere.
Seher stands and looks at Yusuf’s portrait. Where’s my son? She becomes hysterical and knocks her plate off the table. The family rushes over. She wails for Yusuf. Aslan holds her and asks for someone to get the cologne. The family takes Seher to her room.
A doctor has seen Seher. She’s now in bed, asleep. Dr tells the family to keep Seher sedated.
Thank goodness Aslan didn’t burn the letter. He places it in a safe. Hulya enters the room and asks if he’s okay. She says he shouldn’t be so hard on her (Devin). She said terrible things but don’t be hard. I’m not a fool, Aslan answers, I know what’s going on. You angered Devin. Devin and I will deal with it between us.
Devin is packing her things. Aslan asks for an explanation. Are you leaving over something so insignificant? Insignificant? She fires back, don’t you realize how you humiliated me at the table? I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said those things to your mother but… he interrupts, are you really leaving because of that? Yes, she replies, I won’t spend the night here. Is that a problem?
Aslan warns, if you walk out the door, I won’t go after you. You’ll set us on a path of no return. Devin takes it as a threat. Are you going to divorce me? He doesn’t answer. Okay, she says, there’s still time to fix this nonsense. She leaves the house. Aslan fiddles with his wedding ring and he removes it. Hulya smiles at her window as she watches Devin drive away.

Two weeks later.
Devin has been sick but now she’s ok to go back to work. Ezgi, Dani and Ilkay are with her. Ezgi cautions her, if Aslan calls, remember what he said. And he hasn’t even called! You’re sick and he’s in Romania! Ilkay tells Devin he’s got a friend who handles divorces. She’s not interested. Her friends leave.
Devin gets a text. Aww, it’s not Aslan, it’s a bill statement.
Devin calls to Yagmur, I’m ready, I’ll take you. Yagmur is on her phone. There’s a message from Serhat: Hande, you’re in Istanbul. Did you think I wouldn’t find you? Be afraid, you whore. Flashback to the party: Serhat says, you’ve been talking behind my back. Look at me, I will be hard on you.
Yagmur is afraid, she looks out her window. There are men on the street. It looks like one man is showing the others something on his phone. Is he looking for Yagmur?
Devin asks Yagmur if Ceylan knows if Aslan is back from Romania. Yagmur says he comes back today. Devin looks upset. Is she worried that Aslan will call, or he won’t call?
Leyla gets some confusing test results. She makes another appointment.
Ceylan gets a text from Ati, I’ll send you an address where we can meet. I have a surprise for you. Hulya asks who she’s texting with. No one.
Aslan arrival is announced. Hulya tells the fam if he asks about grandma, she’s okay. Ceylan says that’s not the case. Granny hasn’t left her room.
Aslan appears bearing gifts. He asks about grandma. Hulya says she’s okay, upstairs sleeping. Don’t disturb her. The dr, comes every day to check.
Aslan wants a word with Hulya. Hulya tells him he needs a lawyer because of Devin. He’s annoyed. He doesn’t want to talk about Devin. He wants to talk about work. Hulya starts, you said you would straighten everything out. There’s a method to the madness, but are you going to destroy this family and what your father built in 40 years in 5 years?
Look, Aslan replies, the family isn’t the problem. The problem is you want to stay in control. When you lose your money, your last name will mean nothing. That’s what worries you. This is the time to hand over the gaming business. Who will you sell to, Hulya asks, who would want to work with Ilyas Koruzade in Romania? No one. We can’t sell.
Aslan says he’s meeting with Serhat. They will come up with a price. The sale will happen and that’s final. Hulya asks, have you decided to make your father turn in his grave?
Hulya receives a text from Ibo: we need to see each other at once. She can’t deal with him now.
Yagmur has a flashback to 5 months prior. A body on the floor, a panicked man (Serhat?) is on the phone. I don’t know, he says, I think she broke her neck [or did he break it for her?] We see Yagmur hiding and recording it.
Serhat says, hurry, we need to get her out of here! No, the other girl is asleep. Yagmur heads for the door. Door is locked. Serhat is alerted by the sound. Serhat calls, Hande, come out, come out, wherever you are. He finds her hiding in a closet. End flash.
Devin asks Yagmur if she considered finding another job or will she start singing again. Yagmur isn’t paying attention, she’s looking around. She thinks a car has been following them. Devin looks and thinks it might be Aslan’s doing.
Turgut drives, Eko rides shotgun and Aslan is in the back. Eko is looking at Serhat’s posting on social media. A pic of him with 2 women. It reads: [Turkish] The only difference between a woman and a gun is that women don’t wear silencers. I’d love to beat him up, Eko says, but I can’t do that.
Turgut comments to Aslan, [Turkish] I know you’ll be pissed, but it’s ridiculous to leave the casino when you are making so much money. And it will go to this goat (Serhat). Aslan tells him MYOB and drive.
Devin has had enough and stops the car. The car that’s following stops behind her. She gets out and confronts the driver. Go back to your master, Aslan Soykan and tell him to stop spying on me! The man has no idea. Aslan Soykan? A little girl in the car asks her father what’s going on. He assures her it’s okay.
Devin apologizes. The man says he has to bring his daughter to school. The man drives off and Devin is embarrassed. She tells Yagmur it wasn’t Aslan’s man. Who said it was Aslan, Yagmur replies. Devin blames her sister. You said we were being followed. Who else could it be? How should I know, Yagmur fires back.
What’s wrong, Devin asks, is there anything you’d like to tell me? Yagmur replies, would you stay with me regardless of what you learn? Of course, Devin says, why? Yagmur chickens out and says it’s nothing.
Devin asks again, is there anything you’d like to tell me? Yagmur answers, yes there is.
And we are out.
Hami ( is it ok to shorten your moniker) glad you are reading my recaps. I will persevere with them if it helps you. BTW, I'm with you, I also believe Eugenio is alive.
Erika isn't the only one with loose lips, Sebastian also lets Alonso know that Brenda isn't pregnant. I guess siblings believe their secrets are safe with each other.
Emilio is cutting Fern off. Now they are business partners it's not appropriate. The kiss he shared with Elisa in the previous episode put the nail in this bit on the side. He felt all the heat he remembered with Elisa (and vice versa, as Elisa tells Tanya). Also in the previous episode Roberto guilted Elisa into finally sleeping with him again by threatening to kill himself (that idea was Fernanda 's). Elisa didn't seem to enjoy it though.
One important detail from episode 17, Ana is free at last. She is now stashed at one of Emilio's apartments? Fernanda just happened to appear at the sanitarium minutes after she and the PI ( I'm going to have to figure out his name...Igna io)) exited the building and were getting in his car. Fortunately Ana saw her and they left.
So Ana was left with some money in the apartment and she pocketed it. Hope she doesn't do anything stupid and stays inside and hidden.
Alfredo and Gabriel have found the best PI in Miami to look for Eugenio, and he just happens to be Emilio's PI.
Gabriel tells his dad, who wants to eliminate Eugenio when they find him, that while he's at it making Brenda's brothers 'disappear' would make Brenda ( and their baby his sole beneficiary . Alfredo is impressed with his thinking.
Moni is helping Claudia and Erika in the dining room, perhaps they are folding napkins, but the order of business is bonding time and gossip. I didn't understand what they were gossiping about.
Alonso asks why is Brenda going through with AI if she is already pregnant. He is going to figure it he's the baby daddy.
Speaking of, in episode 17, I think Tanya took care of her problem. I'm thinking she had a pregnancy termination of Alonso's baby. When Marcelo came back they resumed their relationship.
Ana is with Emilio she is worried about Ignacio ( her identity in the clinic was that she was his sister), Emilio reassures her. She needs a new identity as she isn't Ana nor Sandra. Ignacio calls him with the news Gabriel has hired him to find Eugenio Beltran. Gabriel tells him to feed them the information a little bit at a time.
Moni is chastised by Fern for hobnobbing with the help at the dinner table. Some business is discussed . Alonso has been relegated to work from home as his office was needed for Emilio.
Poor Ana. I think she used the money to buy some pot. She remembers a fight with her mother and then envisions she smothered her. Ghostly mom appears to her as Ana insists she didn't kill her.
Mirna, ferns confidant, once again gets an earful of Ferns obsession with Emilio. She is mad he severed their relationship. Mirna, as usual is full of good advice which Fern ignores. If you really want a relationship with him, separate from your husband.
Patty no longer wants to play feliz de papa with Alfonso. Unless he is rewarding her well , I never understood that at all. Of course she could fall pregnant and hit him up for child support like the secretary of his father did with her child, Eugenio.
Gabriel wanted a breakfast en familia with Brenda's parents. I'm not exactly sure why. But that backfired. Good chance Brenda will be written out of his will as she is no longer a Ferrero since she married into the del Pino family.
Well Patty didn't cut him off and he tucked a whopping $100 in her bra to go buy herself a present. Her eyes lit up as he pulled out a large wad of cash, but deflated with that paltry sum.
Ignacio and Gabriel discuss slow feeding the facts about Eugenio to Gabriel. Ignacio asks how Ana is doing( not well, she is buying drugs on the street) and Emilio tells him she needs a fake id. Emilio also wants him to look into Fernanda 's past, pronto.
Tanya finally kicks Alonso to the curb( for now). She tells him Marcelo knows all about her past with him. I think he threatened her with something else though.
Patty is in the restroom in tears as she crinkles up the $100 bill.
Claudia shows her new boyfriend (Fernanda's PI searching for Ana) the exterior of her workplace. His eyes light up when he discovers who the owners are. Ana gets back to the condo and takes one of the white pills she bought on the streets from a dealer.
Gabriel is giving Sebastian terrible advice about Moni. She needs friends like Brenda and her ilk, not the help.
Emilio and Elisa are telling each other their kiss was a mistake. Forget about it. Then they passionately kiss again . All these offices have glass walls. You'd think they would do like Alfredo and shut the blinds! Aha, and the door was open. In walks Fern!
Dondi, thanks for the play by play. I keep falling behind since this is on late and I'm still adjusting to the time change. I catch it the next day and I've decided to just use the English CC's on this show as the words and lip movement don't match anyhow. I understand most of what is going on but your giving names to the characters is invaluable to me! A bunch of Turkish names I've never heard before with way too many beginning with a C! About the time this finishes I may have figured out who is who.
Dondi, mil gracias for that fantastic recap. While watching I kept repeating to myself: 'Thank God it's dondi recapping and not me. I was confused by a lot of it." I really, really appreciated your giving us all of Cihan's "session". For me what Telemundo unbelievably eliminated clarified Cihan as the poor victim and removed my doubts about him.
It seems to me that the gene pool of the Soykans ran dry by the time Ceylan was born. She's almost too dumb to live. Whatever ghastly thing Ati has in mind, I don't feel much sympathy for her.
Ibo surprised me a bit by insisting that Ati keep mum about Yagmur's checkered past. He hates his nephew but not to the extent of it being public that Aslan's sister-in-law was in the world's oldest profession.
It sure looks like Serhat killed that woman. And Aslan is selling the casino to him? Yagmur has lived a troubled life, but I don't want Serhat to ever get his hands on her.
ITA, dondi. Please let us know what's in the letter from Aslan's father. I may have screamed at my TV when he set fire to it.
Anyone else think Devin could be pregnant when she looked kind of pale and haggard? Gee, I hope not. I like that dizis don't do the obvious things that telenovelas do.
Devin and Hulya were really having it out. And I was enjoying Hulya's mask dropping off. But unfortunately, Aslan looked in at exactly the wrong moment. Later on, he at least told his mother the truth, that she's all about the power. But what he said to Devin at the dinner table was unforgiveable. I would have packed up and left as well.
Dondi, MANY MANY THANKS for this fantastic recap! I'm especially grateful for all the additional scenes you included. It's particularly hard to understand how the editors could have even considered omitting the parts dealing with Cihan's early life!
And then there's Yusuf's office, looking exactly the same as in Cihan's dream/recollection. After five years, there's not even a coating of dust, so someone must have gone in to clean it every so often. You'd think they would have removed the bloodstains on the walls.
I'm not sure I understand Aslan's setting fire to the letter. The first time he did that, I assumed he was unwilling to see what it said and decided just to get rid of it. But no, it turns out he put out the fire after just a small corner of the envelope (and presumably a similarly small part of the letter) had been burned. Some time later he takes the letter out and sets fire to another corner. But, again, just the corner. Is this supposed to indicate his indecision, or perhaps his frustrated artistic talents??
Is Serhat the nasty guy who knew Yagmur under a different name in Istanbul and is now pursuing/threatening her in wherever it is that they live in Turkey? And is he also someone that Aslan knows? Oy!
It looked as if Yagmur was about to confide in her sister about her past in Istanbul and her fears about Serhat's pursuing her. But this dizi excels inraising expectations and then thwarting them, so....
Dondi, thank you for that excellent review of a jampacked episode . Thanks for adding what was cut out .
Serhat is a scary dude. I hope Eko and Turgut are around if he comes looking for Yagmur.
So , Hulya sent her hand me downs to Nese.
Yes, Devin is probably pregnant . susan
Thanks everyone. These edits are driving me crazy.
Thoroughly enjoying the battles between Devin and Hulya.
Ceylan is an afterthought in the family. The girl needs a wakeup call before it’s too late. Hulya nags her but then forgets about her when golden boy Aslan shows up.
“Ibo surprised me a bit by insisting that Ati keep mum about Yagmur's checkered past.” Yes, novelera, possibly to protect the family name, but he might want to use this info later if it benefits him.
It’s one big coincidence that Serhat Koruzade is an acquaintance of the Soykans and of Yagmur. I wonder how Yagmur managed to get away from Serhat in Izmir. Is it possible he’s not a cold-blooded killer and just a a-hole mafia scion?
I thought about Devin being pregnant, but they said she also had a fever. I wonder. If she continues to feel unwell, it’s a pregnancy. Then wait until the Soykans find out.
Thank goodness Aslan’s letter is mostly intact. Juanita, I didn’t notice that Aslan set it on fire a second time. I thought it was just a flashback that showed how he changed his mind and put out the fire.
Kat in SC: Only a matter of time before the del Pino family finds out Emilio Montenegro is really Francisco Ramirez.
Claudia is STUPID! Dating the Hitman that Crazy Whacky Goldie Locks has hired OMG. At this point, just KILL THEM ALL!
Ana! Ana! Ana! OMG! She is too far gone with the drugs. Will she make it to Ultimos Capitulos ?
Tania obviously aborted the pregnancy. Just wait until Slick Alonso goes OJ Simpson on Marcelo & Tania.
Gracias, Dondi. I'm so glad you included the cut scenes, but I know it's a lot of extra work. Shame on Telemundo for snipping.
I felt like Yusuf had invaded Aslan's body at The Table. Kudos to Devin for not tolerating that humiliation.
I too am surprised Serhat is the one to whom Aslan will sell the casino. Serhat doesn't seem like the head of a crime crew, just a nasty lowlife thug. In the flashback, I take it that the murder of the woman was not intentional but sex that got too rough.
I'm wondering if Yagmur has formulated a plan. She's endangering herself and Devin staying in Istanbul.
Cihan is emotionally wounded by his father, but it bugs me that he is obsessed with Aslan. Hombre, good for you reading your father's letter, but doing so doesn't seem to have done you any good. Mind your business. If Aslan isn't yet ready to read his own letter, that's his business. I dread when Aslan realizes Devin has been meeting with Cihan, remembering that she asked him if his dad left a suicide note.
