Monday, pt. 1 of 3
This may be a little light or more off than usual because I'm really tired. But the highlights should be there.
.
Devin isn’t leaving the hotel. He ignores her anger, which would make me even more mad. She’s not impressed with his use of reverse psychology. She’s not leaving and he can’t win. (I’m pretty sure he just did).
.
Cihan yells at Hulya outside the charity function. She ignores him. He then gets in the car of some woman. Serap Something, Devin’s lawyer. Cihan wants to know why she’s following him. She’s looking for testimony on behalf of Devin. Cihan chuckles. But the lawyer says that the testimony would hurt Aslan. Cihan is suspicious and tells her if she wants something, she should show her hands and not hide them. Couldn’t tell if she was actually hiding something. He leaves her car.
.
Turgut and Isko are monitoring a couple sketchy guys at the new marina and are monitoring Hulya’s account for Aslan.
.
Aslan and Devin argue a bit outside the hotel. She hears a crying child, and this turns out to be a real child! The kid ran away from her brother’s wedding because she stole the veil. She hates her brother’s bride, etc. Aslan and Devin chat with the kid, who asks if they’re married. She says no and he says yes. It’s complicated. Devin gets the kid to go back. Unfortunately, the girl’s name is Hulya, which makes Aslan laugh and Devin sigh.
.
Leyla and the kids are having a grand ole time at their apartment. Her face is all painted when someone comes to the door with something she has to sign for. Tolga, the dumb jerk, wants to take the kids from Leyla due to mental and financial issues. He needs to eat the Ilyas's mom's beans.
.
Devin gets a call from her father asking if she’s ok. Apparently, he was helpful during the miscarriage? I don’t get this. But he has some bad news about a possible infection due to the miscarriage. She tells him she’s fine and either isn’t taking this seriously or doesn’t’ want to say anything in front of Aslan.
.
Aslan and Devin drop the kid with her family and are invited to stay at the wedding. He agrees that they can stay for half hour, probably because the groom won’t stop nagging them to stay. Devin enjoys the food but has to explain to someone else that the relationship is complicated. The guest tells them to make love and not was, which makes Devin choke on her food. Then the guest makes them dance, which they do. There are some glances between the two of them and then a slow song comes on. He misses her so much, and they stare at each other while everyone else applauds the happy couple.
.
Eko is talking to Yagmur outside, telling her how much he loves her, etc. He’s upset because his family is making him marry someone else. A man interrupts, asking if Yagmur is ok. He’s her boyfriend. Eko has sad face, but he deserves this.
.
Aslan and Devin are still staring and looks like they’ve stayed longer than a half hour. He holds out her hand and they end up dancing to the same boring Spanish song even though we all want to hear the Turkish one. Aslan tells her he loves her and she looks sad, moves closer to him but doesn’t say anything.
.
Guns are shot in the air to celebrate the wedding and Devin has a panic attack. Aslan asks them to stop but too late. Devin has wandered away and Aslan has to go looking for her.
Monday, pt. 2 of 3
.
Aslan has somehow found Devin, thanks to the brutal editors of this show. They are in a restaurant and Devin is still upset. She asks if she ever told him that she’s always wanted to be a mother? They leave and Aslan follows her and stops her. She wants to go but he’s not giving up on her or their relationship. He wants to start it again, but on the right foot this time. (Somehow, while Hulya Senior is still alive?). He’s in love, they can make this work, blah blah blah. He kisses her neck, which seems like not the thing she needs right now but I’m not a romantic. And they kiss. Even though not only has nothing changed but everything is worse and somehow Aslan will make everything ok? But he does look good with his shirt off in the next scene, so there’s that.
.
Next day. Devin gets texts from Yagmur wanting to talk and her dad asking about the test results. She looks at the results and goes into the next room to make a call since Aslan is still asleep. The doc tells her they need to talk about the results in her office but says her AMH levels are low, then explains for us non-medical people that her egg count is very low and it’s unlikely she’ll get pregnant again, plus other stuff that fades out, signifying that Devin isn’t listening. The doc wants to talk to her more and Devin agrees to call her when she’s back in Istanbul. Devin cries.
.
Aslan has woken up and gets a call that Devin is leaving the country for London. He thinks it’s a joke and is mad that she didn’t tell him. They fight. He thinks something else is going on and wants to know what. She tells him Hulya helper her get this job, for once doing something good. He knows she’s hiding something (the medical stuff) and yells at her to tell him. She yells back that he doesn’t own her just because the slept together one more time. She’s leaving this life behind and is out. She cries as she walks away while he watches her out the window.
.
Hulya. Seems it was her who wants to take Leyla’s kids away, as she talks to her friends. He wants to talk to her and whispers that she’s not as nice as Leyla and will burn the house down if she doesn’t step out to talk to him.
.
Some guy seems Turgut and Isko walking towards him room and he panics. I don’t remember who he is. As he’s leaving, he runs into Cihan, who headbutts him and then escorts him away to a car. The boys know they lost him but go back to search his apartment and find something interesting but they don’t tell us what.
.
Cihan is now interrogating the Guy about some money he has. Ilyas is after him, which comes as a shock to Cihan who still thought Ilyas was dead. The Guy got money from the Soykan foundation, embezzling it. Cihan asks him to do something for him and then he’ll forget all this other stuff.
.
Aslan tells Hulya that Devin is leaving and he knows that she’s the one who made this happen. He wants to know why she’s doing this to him. Doesn’t she love him more than anyone? Why does she want to hurt him? Can’t she see that he loves her too (for some reason)? She did it for “family” and it’s in their best interest. She’s “helping” them. But she also says they are repeating her history and she won’t allow that. She can’t lose him. (Does this mean Yusuf died because of her? Because of love for her? It doesn’t make sense. he didn't seem like a "love" kind of guy).
Monday, pt. 3 of 3
.
Aslan tells Hulya not to worry. We aren’t going to lose anyone and from now on, the whole family is together “por las buenas o por las malas”. This usually means someone is getting raped and it’s probably not great in the context of this family as well.
.
Devin talks to Cihan and asks if he’ll ever forgive her. He does because she was the only one who talked to him. He tells her she has a good lawyer, and Devin is surprised that she talked to him. Cihan thinks then that she’s ambitious and this is a good thing. He’s probably right.
.
Turgut and Isko talk about the guy who escaped. And something about Ibo escaping? I don’t know what’s happening with Ibo. The boys, with Eko, think Aslan has a strange look on his face and think someone is trying to drive him crazy.
.
Devin talks to her lawyer who wants to be able to do her job without questions, and asks Devin she can get another lawyer if she wants. Devin is ok with her so far. The lawyer thinks someone is trying to drive her crazy too, and that’s it’s the family. As Devin leaves her office, Cihan shows up. He accuses her of leaking the video. She says nothing but looks guilty.
.
The boys find out from Aslan that Devin is gone. They give him a letter that they found in Tolga’s room. So the Guy that Cihan smacked was Tolga, who I didn’t even recognize. He looked so different with a bigger beard. But the letter they found in his room suggests that Ilyas is still alive. Aslan rolls his eyes and then gets a look that says “es lo que mas INRI”.
.
And we’re out.
.

Kat in SC: Looking forward to seeing your recap of last night's episode.
Something tells me Telemundo moved this Telenovela to 11:30 PM CST because of potential dreadful ratings amongst the viewers. Do we know how many episodes this Telenovela is supposed to have overall ?
If I was Telemundo, I would've moved "VENGANZA" to 9:00 PM CST.
Gracias, K. I love the snark you bring.
I think it's Hulya who's trying to get custody of Leyla's kids. Tolga is too busy fleeing both Aslan and Ilyas. His room was a mess. What a slob he is.
Fashion note. Both Yagmur and Devin were rocking micro-miniskirts, in their respective workplaces. I'm pretty sure the guy Yagmur claimed was her novio to Eko is just a coworker. They stopped holding hands after they walked away from him.
So Devin's lawyer got the shooting tape and released it? Now I'm wondering who she's really working for.
Nice to see Cihan and Devin are still good with each other.
Wow..K..thanks for that snappy recap. I am glad that I read it before I watched . I hope to watch this episode tonight . What a,sea of tears !!! Susan
Steve, no idea on how many episodes. I think there isn't a lot of lead time from production to distribution, and it is premiering in the US so no spoilers from Mexico to give us an idea. I'm watching it now. Hopefully all the recap will be up in the next 1.5 hours.
Thanks very much, K., for another rapid and helpful recap.
As always, I love your side comments, such as this one about Tolga: "He needs to eat the Ilyas's mom's beans."
I was very surprised that Devin's father calls to see if she's OK. Yes, that's something most fathers might do, but not Devin's. He repeatedly has given me the impression that he cares about no one but himself.
Yes, the editing has again managed to make things even less clear. But at least they didn't edit out the shot of the shirtless Aslan. Yum!
Of course, we find out that Devin really does want to be a mother in the same episode as she's told her egg count is very low and she's unlikely to become pregnant again. Such a cheery dizi.
The conversation between Cihan and Tolga wasn't all that clear to me. I think Tolga tells him that he embezzled money. Cihan then tells him to go back to the accountant who helped him do this and gather evidence of money laundering. He should then give this evidence to Cihan (who I think offers to pay Tolga for it).
Another thing that wasn't wholly clear to me was the conversation Aslan had with Hulya. Aslan tells her he's sure she's behind Devin's going to England. He asks his mother why she did this. Was it simply because she doesn't approve of Devin? Hulya claims she did it for The Family. According to her, the family loves and hates itself equally. Huh? Hulya also claims that Aslan and Devin make each other suffer, and "I experienced the same hell with your father. I lost my family, my life, my self." She also claims that history is repeating itself, and she can't let this happen. "You are my everything," she tells Aslan. Hmmm... Presumably we'll learn more about this eventually.
So now both Cihan and Aslan know that Ilyas is alive. It would be great if they'd join forces to do him in, but....
1. Darn, he lives! Alonso is rescued by passing boaters, dragged to shore by a guy swimming who does chest compressions resulting in him spitting up water. In real life he would have been dead as Gabriel kayaked to shore and the rescue boat never saw him so he was under water at least 5-10 minutes. Oh well, now 2 brothers will want to kill him so if he is murdered another who done it in the making.
2. Exhumation of daddy Del Pino. Both 'sona are in attendance. One thinks it is a waste of time and the other hopes Alfredo isn't related at all.
3. Ana visits Roberto in the hospital. She talks about her drug problem. I think she advised him not to become dependent on pain killers, but I may have imagined that.
4. Fern sees Emilio at the office where he is very all of to her. He claims it is because of the location. She wishes Marcelo' was gone so she could have her way with him. He asks does she care who the true del Pino is. She claims not to care, she just wants it over so she can run far away with him, after finding her daughter that is. Emilio offers to help, saying the daughters father's name would be another lead. She claims she wants to do it on her own .
5. Tania wants to support Moni in her suit against Alonso.
6. Pati gives some gossip to Fernanda about how her sisters seem to suspect Fernanda knows Miguel
7. Marcelo and Francisco discuss how Fern can lie with such impunity. They get a call from Fermin. Claudia found Fernanda as a contact in Miguel's phone. ( Another lie she has told). Francisco finally says he won't lose sight of the objective in memory of his abuela.
8. Elisa is at the office with Ana. They encounter Emilio and Marcelo in the hall where introductions are made. As they walk off Ana says, very fine looking men.. Elisa agrees.
9. Some meaning of life discussions between Pat and Alfredo in the office, whilst a similar conversation was going on between Adelberto and Eugenio on a dockside restaurant.
10. Some guy is taking photos through the window of a restaurant where Mirna and Fernanda are having their latest therapy session, discussing Ana. Of course Fernanda has the solution, kill her, as Mirna rolls her eyes and shakes her head in disbelief. Mirna says you promised no more killing. Fernanda is going to get Eugenio's advice.
11. Elisa and Ana talk with an on edge Gabriel in his office. Not sure if Elisa is trying to get Ana a job at the construction business.
12. Back to Mirna and Fern. More talk about who is the rightful heir, does Fern care as the camera clicks away. (I'm thinking a video to read their lips would have been smarter, or getting a table close to them and eavesdropping...)
13.Gabriel is sitting at his desk with his dead down shaking it in disgust with himself, fear of being seen, who knows. Loud knock on his plate glass door, Hola, it's Alonso.! Gabriel looks like he's seen a ghost. No I'm not a ghost. You hit me and left me for dead though. Alonso taunts him and starts screaming my impotent brother, blah blah blah, as Gabriel tries to choke him and silence him.
14. Elisa offers Ana a job at her foundation which she is thrilled to accept. She tells Elisa she has spent time with Roberto who is really nice and handsome. She doesn't understand why Elisa doesn't love him. Elisa says I do, but not as a spouse. She can't forget Francisco. ( Who managed to forget her by coming to Miami, discovering his grandmother was dead and not trying to see her).
15. Marcelo receiveds a photo of Mirna and Fernanda. Francisco has never seen her before. Fern is antisocial with no friends, maybe the woman is an associate of Beltran. ( Our galan is getting a bit smarter as he is weaned away from the Medusa).
16. Erika has given her 1 week notice aas a maid at the big house. She will work full time for Elisa's foundation. Claudia wants to quit also. I think Erika encourages her to remain as eyes and ears there. I guess if they both quit maybe a bodyguard, PI, maid (anonymously put forward by Marcelo)could be hired to protect Ana.
17. Alonso tells Gabriel will have to buy his silence about the attempt on his life. I want a nice office, equal salary to you, etc. you have 2 days.
18. Fern talks to Alfredo about the trauma of exhumihis father. He says it fine ( as he remembers his time with Pati). Fernanda wants to throw a welcome home party for Ana, with Emilio, Marcelo, Tania invited.. he says whatever you want to do.
19. The part is on. Tania tells Francisco and Marcelo she will be fine if she sees Alfonso. She just feels nauseous around him now. Sebastian and Moni are moving into the same condo building as Emilio. Moni has her hair in a cute ponytail. Sebastian notices her birthmark at the nape of her neck. Convos between Fern and Alfonso. Also between Brenda, Gabriel and Alfredo. Not going into detail about them...
20. Brenda's parents at their home. I think they are discussing their possible divorce and division of property.
22. Omg, at the bar. Miguel and Rafita discuss Ana. Rafita misses her. I guess he actually has feelings for her besides a meal ticket, not that I blame him. She is the most likable member of this ensemble!. He asks Miguel, is this love I feel, which earns him a laugh from Miguel.
23 Mirna visits Eugenio. He's going back to Dallas soon. Mirna wants him to tell ern where her daughter is. He says it would have been better if she continued to believe her daughter was dead.
24. Claudia and Erika are arguing about something.
25. Miguel suggests a break in at the del Pino estate, perhaps with Claudia's unbeknownst assistance. They hope to have her let them know when Fern is there solo so they can rob the place and have their way with her,( I'm not aghast at the idea, she deserves having some bad things to happen to her.). Oh no, they hope Elisa is there too...
26. Papa is not in favor of Alfonso moving up in the company hierarchy. Alfonso says it's Gabriel'idea... N.O. no Alfredo repeats.
27. Ana and Gabriel talk. She wonders if he would have preferred she had died.
28. Adelberto is trying to revive his marriage. Ninette believes she was second choice behind Maria Laura.
29. Observant Sebastian notices Fern's birthmark. He puts them side by side and takes photos of the identical marks. Emilio, Marcelo and Sebastian agree they are, as Moni sidles as far from Fern as possible.
Susan, Eko broke off the engagement with Yagmur (in the middle of the engagement party!) because his parents refused to approve it. ITA Devin is probably pregnant again after last night.
Thanks so much, K. Another great, snarky recap. I also loved "he needs to eat the beans". It looks like Tolga embezzled the foundation Hulya is always puffing herself up about. Sorry about any needy recipients. I'm surprised he got away with it. Hulya doesn't miss much. Are we to assume he paid off the dominatrix/blackmailer?
Gah! We see Leyla playing with her children. Even the girl/Hulya copier seemed very happy. So the worst mother in Turkey has decided to yank away her daughter's children.
I missed the part about Eko being "forced" to marry someone else. I thought he was just apologizing for buckling under to his parents at the engagement party. Eko, just go away. I agree that the "boyfriend" is just Yagmur trying to shake him. But, as long as she stays away from substance abuse, I'm OK with her dumping Eko.
What a letdown! Aslan tells his mother he needs to talk NOW or else. Instead of ripping her for sending the woman he loves to another country, he tells her he loves her and wants an explanation. How about she's just a rotten control freak who wants her son married to a puppet she can control? I guess we'll eventually get some explanation of "history repeating itself" but I don't care. I want the worst for Hulya and nothing justifies what she does to her children.
Kat in SC: Awesome job with the recap of yesterday's episode. I will post my personal thoughts sometime this evening.
Be on the look out for it.
Thanks for the recap, K.
When Serap offered her business card to Cihan, he turned her hand over and revealed a scar across her wrist. He told her, you need to cut long, not across. This wound won’t kill you.
Nedret must be coming soon. Hulya told a worker at the Foundation to return a large donation from Nedret Soykan in the name of her son, Bedri Cakir.
Edit: Leyla’s kids paint her face. Zeynep is concerned about what will happen when her mother starts working. She wants Leyla to ask Uncle Aslan for money, so she doesn’t have to work. Leyla reminds her that they agreed not to take money from anyone and to build their own lives. After Leyla received the notice, she called Cemre and explained that Hulya wants her kids and asked if she could come watch the children.
What? All of a sudden Ergun cares about Devin? Didn’t see that coming. But after Devin hangs up, he’s ticked at her because he feels this wouldn’t have happened if she took his advice to have an abortion.
Not sure where Yagmur is working, maybe real estate. She makes a sale and rings a bell. Everyone in the office applauds and congratulates her.
They played great party music at the wedding… too bad we didn’t get to hear it on our broadcast.
Big, big edits: The Foundation dinner. As Hulya gets up to speak, we see Tolga sneaking out the back door. He gets into his car and drives off.
A taxi arrives, it’s Leyla. She is stopped at the door, her name isn’t on the list, and she is refused entry. She collapses into the guard’s arms and sends him off to get water. Leyla takes the opportunity to sneak in. She approaches her mother who is returning to her seat and gives her a big hug. The crowd applauds. Leyla whispers in Hulya’s ear, don’t be afraid mother, your daughter has arrived.
Leyla goes to the podium and introduces herself. She starts by praising her mother’s Foundation work. Then it takes a turn for the worse. All the things she learned about motherhood from her mother’s example. To keep your head up when you’re dying inside. A woman’s place is next to her husband. A bad marriage can be fixed by having children.
Leyla continues, but the most important thing is –to be silent. Because I was afraid of you mom, she says, intimidation is the easiest way to learn. But I won’t be silent anymore. I’m not afraid of you or these hypocritical people.
The host tries to interrupt Leyla. When that doesn’t work, they shut off her mic. Leyla addresses her mother, if you wanted to be the voice of girls, why did you silence me for so many years? But okay, I forgive you. She mentions her AVM. It can be solved with an operation. But an operation that will solve your problem has not been invented. You can’t bully my children. You can’t take my children. If you touch them, I won’t forgive you. I will destroy you. Leyla walks out.
Next, Hulya storms out and gets in her car. She calls lawyer Cagri. She tells the driver to take her to Leyla’s house. She doesn’t realize the driver is Cihan! Once she does, he demands to know why she ruined his life. She has the nerve to call him ungrateful, he would have died if she didn’t take him. He wishes he had died. He tells her she will pay for her sins. She tells him he’s the one going to hell. He starts speeding. He heads straight for a wall. She shouts. He stops within inches of crashing.
They get out of the car. Hulya is in shock. Cihan tells her he wanted to die. Man is the only animal that lives knowing he will die. He knows, but he wants to live. So he needs something—hope. Power. And of course, money. I will take your power and money. You will remain powerless and pathetic. You’ll be in a nursing home and die in your f’ing bed. Welcome to Hell, Hulya Soykan. He kisses her forehead.
They cut the end of the Devin – Cihan scene. He told her if she doesn’t leave or if she comes back, keep in mind he will be here. She holds out her hand to shake, it’s an awkward second, but Cihan brings it in for a hug. They tell each other to be careful.
Wow, did Serap leak the video? What’s her game? Who is she working with?
My personal thoughts on last night's episode.
168.) Right on cue: Slick Alonso LIVES. Lucky SOB survived Gabriel's attack. Just wait until Sebastian finds out the TRUTH about how Slick Alonso drugged & raped Monica.
169.) Speaking of Monica: She's gotten more STUPIDER than ever. Send her away ASAP.
170.) The exhumation of Daddy del Pino takes place & as usual, the bickering scumbag brothers continue insulting each other. OMG.
171.) Mirna is annoyed with Crazy Goldie Locks wanting to kill Ana & probably the entire del Pino family too.
172.) Claudia still being pimped out. Good riddance because I want her to severely SUFFER.
173.) Ana meets Mooching Roberto: What could possibly go wrong? I think he's still faking that illness somehow & wanting to keep control of Gullible Elisa.
174.) Marcelo still the voice of reason. But is he in some danger considering Goldie Locks is getting annoyed with him lurking around ?
175.) Emilio/Francisco SLOWLY wants to unleash his revenge plans. But HOW will he do it ? All I see is him banging Crazy Goldie Locks 24/7.
176.) Elisa giving Ana a job at the Foundation is a BAD IDEA because you know Goldie Locks might have spies plotting to drug up Ana again.
177.) Alfredo letting the so-called welcome home party for Ana take place. We all know what's going to happen next?
178.) If I'm Marcelo: I might want to keep a close eye on Tania because I think she's still got Slick Alonso on the brain.
179.) Of course, Gabriel would prefer that Ana would've died. He needs to answer for killing Brenda's brothers.
180.) Speaking of the Ferrero's: More nagging between Daddy & Mommy Ferrero & the topic of discussion: the late Maria Laura del Pino.
OMG. dondi, I can't believe that Telemundo cut out all these powerful scenes! MANY MANY THANKS for letting us know about them! I'm especially astonished that they cut Leyla confronting Hulya at the Foundation, and Hulya getting into a car/cab driven by Cihan. WOW!!
What terrible decisions on Telemundo's part.
Ditto the above. That sounds like a scene I want to see! And thanks for filling in the details I miss. Curious now about Serap’s history.
Also curious about things that happened tonight, and who thought it was a good idea to store the ax in the guest bedroom. Looking forward to the recap.
K
#33 – Part 1 of 3
Cihan asks Serap why she released the video (showing Devin shooting Cihan). She says it was to help her client. She tries BSing Cihan, but he’s not buying it. [The actor portraying Serap looks familiar to me. I looked her up on a Wiki, but I can’t translate the titles of anything she’s appeared in from Turkish to see if I’m right or not.]
Looking paralyzed and furious, Aslan watches a documentary on elephants. The lawyer Cagri comes to tell Aslan that there’s going to be an investigation of the Soykans for blanqueo de dinero (money laundering). Aslan comes out of his stupor remembering Iskoc telling him that Ilyas Koruzade could be alive.
We see Devin packing and saying goodbye to her friends, the kindly couple.
Aslan tells Turgut and Iskoc that he needs the lawyer. He asks when Devin leaves for the U.K. and is told the coming weekend.
Devin is in a hire car with Ilkay, who’s very smug about where they’ll live and work in London. She asks the driver to stop, throws out his bag (surprisingly small). She tells him to give her best to Hulya. He sort of shrinks down, looks guilty and tries to explain. Nope!
Aslan has gone to his mother’s house. He tells them that the family is in pieces. Ibo says it broke apart years ago. He tells them that the D.A. has begun an investigation that could end with them in the street or behind bars. “We’re together or we’re lost.”
Ibo wonders who plotted this, and Aslan said it was Cihan. But he has a partner. Ilyas is alive. They put out the video and got the investigation started. The only way to fight this is to be authentically a family. [Ha! No family with Hulya in it meets that description.]
Oh boy. Serap is Ilyas’ daughter, and Cihan is at the dining table (probably beanless).
The cops arrive and put the Soykans in handcuffs. Aslan says his wife is included. We see her taken off the plane by two police officers.
We now hear from Aslan The Parable of the Elephant. “The hunters go into the savannah and dig a big hole to trap a calf. The hunters show up in dark clothes and torture it. Then they come back dressed in white, are kind, and take it from the hole. The elephant calf thinks they saved it and becomes a slave.” He, I think, makes an analogy about the family being saved by the same method as the elephant, i.e., the authorities’ threats drive them closer to each other.
#33 – Part 2 of 3
Aslan tells Ibo and Hulya to just say they don’t know to whatever they’re asked.
Cihan tells Ilyas and Serap that the King Lion accelerated the investigation and thinks he can get away with una multa (a fine). [We see Aslan's crew shredding documents. Cihan says that Tolga took the money. Ilyas says he has to die. Serap thinks Aslan must be nuts to let his family be arrested. Cihan says it’s a Yusuf Soykan trick, the Elephant Hunt.
Devin is at the police station and overhears Cagri (the ubiquitous lawyer) talking to Aslan about the funds wired from the foundation to another account. Aslan realizes it was Tolga. He says no one can know about the foundation. He says he’ll tell his mother and uncle to jugar al vestruz (make like an ostrich hiding its head in the sand). We see Ibo and Hulya following orders.
The D.A. is interrogating Devin and asks her if she has any financial ties to the Soykans. She says there aren’t any. Then, looking SO innocent, asks if this only means the company businesses. She smiles and mentions the “wife’s salary”. She says she was sent $10,000 each month. And she goes on to say that, without exception, she transferred it to Sevdem, the family foundation. The D.A. gets a triumphant smile.
Devin comes out of the room, kisses Aslan and walks away. There’s no sound but we see Hulya losing her s^*t. Some narrator intones that there will be a larger investigation.
Hulya tells Ibo to get his guys moving. Devin must die or go to prison. Ibo nods. Hulya shouts to the press that Devin was the one who did it, if there were any irregularities at all.
Devin has been released, and we have to listen to a rant by Nese, who presumably has come to pick up her daughter. Ibo’s contacts work fast. Devin’s car is pulled over. They seize the car, and we listen to Nese coming unglued. Devin just walks away. Yagmur calls to say the police are there searching the apartment. Devin remembers Hulya’s threat.
Aslan drives up, screeches to a halt and tells his demon mother she was supposed to keep her trap shut. He tells both of them that he’s in charge. It’s martial law until they catch Tolga. He seizes their phones. [How can he resist telling Hulya that Tolga is totally her fault?]
While Devin is walking Yagmur calls Aslan to say that the police are there searching the apartment. And that he needs to keep Devin away. Just then the bag of money is “found” and an arrest warrant will be issued. Aslan realizes it was Hulya and Ibo. Aslan springs into action, saying he’ll kidnap Devin.
We see her approaching her apartment, seeing Yagmur being led out. She opens her mouth, and Aslan clamps the stereotypical serial killer chloroform rag over her nose and mouth. Eko looks on, saying Yagmur’s name. [Has anyone else noticed Eko’s galán curls are cut way back, making him look more sinister.]
#33 – Part 3 of 3
Cihan tells Ilyas and Serap that he’s going to meet with Tolga, who’s bringing him some more dirt on the Soykans. Serap means to go along. Ilyas gets feisty and wants to go himself. The other two remind him he’s dead. Ilyas sees Cihan, he thinks, looking at Serap in a certain way and cuts his hand. He tells him to remember the cut every time he looks at his daughter and that there could be other cuts.
Serap calls Devin. She’s passed out in the back of a car Aslan is driving. Cihan says she must be in a cell by now, smiling evilly. [This disappoints me, for some reason. I thought Cihan didn’t harbor a grudge against Devin.] Aslan reaches for Devin’s phone and sees Serap’s face on the screen. He throws Devin’s phone away.
Devin wakes up in the house Aslan asked Iskoc to set up. She asks if he’s lost his mind, and he slowly nods. She starts yelling, saying she knows she’ll go to prison, but so will Hulya and Aslan. He tells her she brought it on herself pulling the foundation into the mix. He says she’ll stay there until he resolves things, be it a day, a week, or a year. She finds there’s bars on the window to the bedroom and starts screaming again.
Some woman at the foundation tells Hulya they’re finished. Another woman comes in to say that Hulya’s out as President. Some fiduciary has been set up.
Ibo’s thugs are following Iskoc and Turgut. Ibo says the rat has to die ASAP; he knows too much about Ibo. Aha! We see that the rat in question is Tolga. Cihan sees him approaching, smiles, and thinks to himself Aquí viene el sanguijuela” (leech, bloodsucker). Tolga sees Ibo’s thugs and then Iskoc and Turgut. There are four guys in pursuit. Tolga runs into a street and his hit by a car (driven by Serap). The nine-lives brother-in-law seems none the worse for wear.
Oh please! This whole thing takes place around the corner from Zeynep and Kaya’s school. Tolga approaches, kneels in front of his children, and tells them that their mother had their uncle send someone to kill him.
Zeynep approaches Cihan, calling him uncle and crying. She tells him that her father said her mother wanted him dead. Cihan says her father misunderstood. She makes him promise not to kill her father. The yellowbelly has his son walk with him to a taxi and then flees. Turgut takes a picture of Serap with his phone, rather surreptitiously.
Aslan is fixing some food for Devin and hears some alarming banging. Turgut calls to say they had to let Tolga go because he used Zeynep and Kaya to protect him. When Turgut says Cihan was there, Aslan figures that they wanted to kill Tolga before his people could trap him and put the blame on him.
Somehow there’s a huge axe in Devin’s room. She does a Jack Nicholson, breaks out, and runs. Aslan pursues and shoots out one of her tires. She goes nuts in the car. When she quiets down and rolls down her window, Aslan approaches. “Do you want to know who’s your lawyer? It’s Ilyas Koruzade. He’s alive. I’m still trying to protect you. You’ll have to kill me to leave here. She grabs the axe before getting out and Viewerville wonders for a moment. But she says: “If you want me here, I’ll stay.” She meekly hands him the axe.
Thanks for another great recap, novelera. Appreciate the snark and vocab.
“The actor portraying Serap looks familiar to me.” Yes, she played Asu, Oyku’s crappy bio mother in Kizim/Todo Por mi Hija. We watched and recapped that.
Ilkay’s “surprisingly small” bag. lol Ilkay got off easy.
Edits: Ilyas and Kiymet are in their safe house. She reads the coffee grounds in her cup and tells Ilyas she sees a dagger—it means betrayal. Serap enters the room. Doesn’t seem like Kiymet likes or trusts her very much.
Serap notices someone is moving into the house next door. It could be dangerous. Ilyas complains about being stuck in the house watching women’s daytime shows. Serap tells him to be patient, he will get the passport. Kiymet wonders why they are trusting the Americans. It’s since your son died, Serap replies, so your dead son can live the rest of his life in comfort. Let me know if you have a better plan.
Serap goes back to the window and sees the new neighbor is Cihan. He sees her and waves. Ilyas goes to the window. Cihan flashes a big smile, holds up the rental sign and waves again. We see a mattress brought into his house.
“… Cihan is at the dining table (probably beanless).” Lol, I made the effort to look. But that bean dish may be in his future if he messes with Serap.
Edited convo: Serap wants to go with Cihan because Ilyas needs to stay hidden. In front of Cihan, Ilyas tells Serap, I don’t trust this man as much as I trust my sins. You don’t have to trust him, Serap replies, just trust me. When I’m done with him, I will take care if necessary. We need him now. That’s when Cihan jokes, the dragons are not coming anytime soon.
Edit: Cihan and Serap both try to open the driver’s door at the same time. Of course, their hands touch, they look at each other. Cihan glances up to see Ilyas watching at the window. Then he jokes with Serap, it would be a shame for your father to see. She asks, what shame? If you were to sit on my lap, he replies, it would be nice, but not now. He shows her the cut Ilyas made. She smiles and says, you’re ugly, but a cute kid. I don’t get into a car driven by someone else. She drives, he rides.
“I thought Cihan didn’t harbor a grudge against Devin.” I don’t think he does. I think he laughs because he figures the Soykans/Aslan are holding her somewhere.
I had to laugh at everyone chasing Tolga. I could run faster. What an awful father Tolga is to speak to and use his children like that.
Cihan qualified his promise to Zeynep. He wouldn’t kill her dad because her “mother is mad at him”. There are several other reasons to kill Tolga.
“Somehow there’s a huge axe in Devin’s room. She does a Jack Nicholson, breaks out, and runs.” Lol beanie moment. Is there anyone who didn’t think of Jack Nicholson?
Gracias, Novelera. Super recap. I got whiplash from last night's action and I certainly wasn't expecting Jack Nicholson from "The Shining" to invade Devin.
Dondi, thanks for the edits. Telemundo should be ashamed.
I cheered when Devin threw Illkay's bag and ordered him out of the car. But I jeered when she told the detective about the daughter-in-law transfers. Sure, stick it to Hulya, but she is out of her league with this bruja and it's she (Devin) who will suffer.
Serap is not as together as she appears to be. Earlier, Cihan had noted a scar inside her wrist (a past cutting problem? or suicide attempt?). Funny that Ilyas warns Cihan off his daughter, as said daughter wears a black bra as a top.
It starts where it left off, the identical birthmark. Fernanda sees nothing special about it. Moni of course wants nothing to do with the witch.
Ana tells dad she is happy to be home but remembers nothing of her "kidnapping". He tells her Monday she needs to give a statement to the police. She tells them the same thing. She recalls nada.
Marcelo is leaving for Mexico. He warns Francisco to be careful now Moni and Sebastian are moving in. He thinks this is a good thing, Fern will stop dropping by. Marcelo asks what about Fermin? I guess Francisco will think of something about how to meet with him.
Brenda is baffled why Gabriel is promoting Alonso to Roberto's job. He says it's your fault. You had an affair with him , the baby is his, I'm being coerced to supporting his promotion.
Fernanda is at Eugenio's. She is repeating Ana's claim of. Memory loss. She doesn't believe her. Eugenio says it's your problem if she talks, Fern corrects him, it is our problem. Ana knows we are involved together. You have to kill her.his advice is to get her back on drugs and she will kiss her sobriety goodbye. Fern wants Eugenio to return to Dallas, win or lose the paternity fight. He tells her that is his decision to make. She asks again about her daughter, and once again he shuts her down.
Claudia needs her "tequila" shot again. It seems like Miguel is cutting her off. Something about enjoying her John's a bit too much but I may have misinterpreted that. At any rate, it seems she is now an addict.
Sebastian paid attention in college to genetics and birthmarks in particular. Emilio is all ears, but Moni wants to know nothing.
Alfredo talks with Ana about her memory loss. A psychiatrist may be able to help. She then turns the tables and questions his speedy marriage to Fernanda. She mentions he doesn't seem to have a happy marriage.
Brenda is leaving. Gabriel has insulted her father again and she is done with him. She rushes out, going down the stairs Gabriel tries to stop her. She trips and falls a few steps, seated on the stairs we see symptoms of miscarriage.
Alonso is pestering Tania again. She tells him quit calling me or I am blocking you. I wish you were dead. She hangs up. He hears Brenda screaming. Gabriel is with her on the steps. She tells Alonso to call an ambulance and get her purse.
Elisa and Roberto discuss their marriage. He wants to stay in it, she doesn't love him like she loved Francisco. She leaves to get back to Ana He recalls his conversation with Fernanda. Not sure if the act with Elisa was to try to get back with her because he loves her or because Fern ordered him to.
Claudia is offended at the insults Miguel is telling her. He has ruined her life. He orders her back to work so she can get her fix.
Gabriel is taking Brenda to the hospital.
Marcelo and Francisco say a lot, much of which I barely understood. Marcelo asks about Francisco's mother. His abuela never said much about her (hmm, could Eugenio be his father?)
Alonso tells dad about Brenda. I think he won't be sad if she loses the baby. Alfredo tells him he crossed the line sleeping with his sister in law...
Poor Ana is being counseled by Fernanda. She is very uncomfortable trying to keep up the pretext of remembering nothing.
Fermin' and Erika discuss Claudia. She has stopped going to Mass, I'm afraid the same thing as happened to Ana at that place is happening to Claudia.
Brenda lost the baby. Elisa comforts Gabriel at the hospital. She knew about Alonso. Gabriel feels like an idiot being the last to know. He is broken up because he actually loves Brenda.
Alfredo has to connect the dots in Alonso's pea brain what it means if Brenda goes home to daddy...
Francisco and Marcelo discuss Fern some more. He tells Marcelo about the missing baby.
Fernanda is working Ana still. Suggests she really does not want to recall what happened the day she was sent to the clinic. Fernanda spins a yarn about how she wishes she had convinced her parents to send her to a different rehab clinic.
Erika feels her sisters are a lost cause.
Brenda's parents arrive at the hospital and get the news from Gabriel that she lost the baby ( I don't wish a miscarriage on anyone, but a child with Alonso's genes is no great loss).
Tania is calling an escort service for someone. Is she setting a trap for Alonso?
Brenda asks her parents if she can move back home.
Roberto is back at the del Pino home in Elisa's room. She is sleeping with Ana though, not him.
Ana and Claudia are talking. Claudia is shaking. Ana knows that she is on drugs.
Alfredo tells Gabriel to beg pardon of Brenda so she returns. He's like, she was the one unfaithful to me! Daddy says if you don't win her back I'll suck Alonso onto her. Daddy gives him a week to win her back.
The day of reckoning...whose the true son? The lawyers meet in the conference room. Beltran is the son but you aren't! ( As I laugh at getting that bingo card right).
What an amazing recap, novelera! As I watched the episode, I kept trying to follow and make sense of what was happening, but quite often I failed. I always love your recaps, but this one I not only loved but really NEEDED.
I should mention that I appreciate your providing some useful Spanish vocabulary that went right by me. And I loved your delightful asides, such as "[Ha! No family with Hulya in it meets that description.]" and "[How can he resist telling Hulya that Tolga is totally her fault?]"
I'm still not sure what Devin's motive was in mentioning the "wife salary" that she received each month and immediately transferred to the foundation.
Does she want Aslan to go to prison? I don't really think she does, but I can't imagine any other reason for her respnding as she did.
Aslan certainly doesn't want to see Devin go to prison. I loved your description of his using the "stereotypical serial killer chloroform rag" to render her unconscious so he can kidnap her and thus prevent her from being (re-)arrested by the police.
With both Ibo and Ilyas determined to see Tolga dead, I don't have much hope for his survival. Then again, that's fine with me.
Perhaps I shouldn't admit this, but when I read "She [Devin] does a Jack Nicholson, breaks out, and runs," I had to put "Jack Nicholson axe" into Duck Duck Go to understand the reference. I see dondi has asked, "Is there anyone who didn’t think of Jack Nicholson?" Yep, there is [raised hand]. I never saw "The Shining," never wanted to see it, and had no idea Jack Nicholson was even in it [she admits with a mixture of embarrassment and pride].
What stood out for me in the above scene was how unlikely and absurd it was that an axe would be left in a room seemingly designed for holding someone against their will. Oh well, "unlikely" and "absurd" do seem appropriate adjectives for what goes on in telenovelas and dizis.
Juanita I'm raising my hand also. In fact most movie references are unknown to me. BTW, if you can retrieve my part 2 recap of Venganza, Blogger ate it.
Kat in SC: Spicy recap of last night's episode, now my personal thoughts (It will be super SHORT)
*Only a matter of time before Ana goes back on drugs & sent back to the clinic of horrors. Memo to Francisco/Emilio: YOU OWN THIS: You just didn't want to be bothered with Ana.
*Claudia is on the full-fledge of drugs. Still don't give a shit about her at all.
*Right on cue: Slick Alonso doesn't give a damn about Brenda losing the baby & Alfredo is PISSED OFF; Gabriel feels like an idiot for shoving Brenda down the stairs like that, I hope your goal of becoming the company's president makes you happy buddy.
*Mooching Roberto is FAKING that illness I'm telling y'all. Elisa should've moved to NC or maybe TX.
*Tania better hope her plan works. Marcelo going back to Mexico once again.
*How long before Crazy Goldie Locks figures out that Emilio is really Francisco ? Let's see: Ana, Erika, Claudia, Patty (maybe), Fermin, Ignacio, Marcelo all know about his real identity. I've got a feeling it's only a matter of time before Emilio/Francisco slips up, then Goldie Locks & maybe Beltran strike.
I laughed with the Maury Povich MIC DROP: You are NOT the son of the late Daddy del Pino.
Thanks, all. Last night's episode was a good chance to throw in some interesting Spanish. Well, The Shining was a Stanley Kubrick epic, taken from a Stephen King novel. There were so many stunning scenes. To me it absolutely elevated itself above the horror genre. Nicholson was fantastic. That "Here's Johnny!" reference to Johnny Carson can never be forgotten.
Thanks again for the edits, dondi. I thought Cihan was moving into Ilyas' mother's house when the mattress went by the window. Then I thought about how very unlikely that would be and left it out of the recap. And thanks also for satisfying my curiosity about where I'd seen the Serap actor. Yep, not exactly mother of the year in Todo por mi Hija.
Yes, indeed, Tolga is beneath contempt for trying to poison his children's minds against their mother. Cihan handled his talk with Zeynep perfectly. It was really funny watching all the antagonists in a row watching Tolga outwit them. Surely he won't survive to the end.
Juanita, an axe being stored in the Guest Room doesn't make it onto the Top Ten of absurdities I've seen in telenovelas!
Are Turks that devoted to their mothers? Aslan keeps forgiving Hulya over and over for the sabotage to his relationship with Devin. I have a couple of friends who've written family members off completely because of sabotaging behavior.
Niecie, I loved your bit about Serap wearing a black bra in public and her father treating her like a 15-year-old virgin.
Ooh, Novelera. I actually saw todo por mi hija. Is it considered a dizi? I'm still 6 episodes behind. Whittled down 2.5 episodes tonight. Maybe I'll catch up before the end of the series.
Steve, Gabriel didn't actually push Brenda. She slipped while rushing out of the house. I don't see how Roberto can fake kidney cancer. He had the kidney removed and spent a good week in the hospital I think. A lack of an abdominal scar would give the game up. I guess he could have volunteered to donate a kidney and thus fool Elisa, but he doesn't seem to be an altruistic type of guy.
Novelera, thank you for a great recap.
Wow, this show really knows how to spin it out of control.
Devin makes me crazy . The anger and screaming is just too much. Watching her in the car physically freaking out made me wonder how this actress isnt harming herself. An axe in the bedroom....time to suspend disbelief.
Nove!era, I have taught many guys from the middle east, and yes, they are extremely devoted to their mothers. Susan
A couple of comments to get us started.
- Aslan finally throws in the towel on keeping Devin with him. After the axe escape, the drinking glass attack to the head, and the running escape in the thick mud, Devin breaks down and tells him all her hurt, including her not being able to get pregnant again. He's supportive, but agrees to a divorce because that's what she wants. He gives her his wedding ring.
- Turgut and Iskoc get the video of Ibo's guy entering Devin's place to plant cash. This clears Devin and Yagmur, who is released from jail and free again to argue with Eko who offers to take her home.
- Leyla is on fire and literally sets Yusuf's portrait on fire in response to Hulya refusing to turn over her kids, whom Hulya picked up from their school. Leyla escapes the mansion with her kids, but back at home she catches that ratfink Tolga stealing from her safe. She valiantly and quite impressively tries to kick his a$$ but he gets way.
- At last Cihan, Serap, and Ilyas corner Tolga on the roof of a tall building. Cihan pushes Tolga off the roof (to his death?). Ibo and his crew are watching this, but Cihan takes a photo of them.
- Cihan takes a small step in wooing Serap, but she has a flashback to her younger self (early teens?) being a sexually intimidated?/assaulted? by someone (we don't see his face or torso) in her bedroom and shuts down Cihan.
Thanks very much, Niecie, for getting the discussion started.
You've definitely hit the major moments in last night's episode. For a while, Aslan and Devin seemed to be about to reconcile and get back together (or at least that was my sugar-coated hope). Aslan tells her "I'll do anything for you." Alas, she responds "I want you to sign the divorce paper." Sigh.
Devin has made it clear that she is upset about losing the baby and, perhaps especially, about her probably not being able to conceive again. Finally in this episode she expresses regret as well for the career she enjoyed and was good at and has apparently now lost.
I don't recall seeing Leyla set fire to the portrait of Yusuf, but as soon as I saw it burning, I was sure she had set it ablaze. It was her unmistakeable response to Hulya's telling her, "As long as that picture is on the wall, you will obey Soykan rules." Brava, Leyla!
I'm not sure why Cihan took a surreptitious photo of Ibo and his crew looking at the scene of Tolga's death. Is Cihan going to try to blame them for Tolga's death?? I'm not sure how he'd do that, but why else take the photo?
I wish I could add more, but I'm afraid I can't. I hope some other folks will fill in more of the blanks. I'm especially curious about Serap and Ilyas.
Thanks, Niecie. I appreciate your highlights and 100% agree with what you said about Leyla being on fire. My God the awful entitlement of Hulya and the timid acceptance of the school whatever (principal, admin) in allowing Hulya to take her grandchildren. When Leyla confronted her, she said Leyla had two choices, take some anti-depressants and move back in or go away forever.
I was glad they showed Cihan seeing Serap read his texts. I'm not sure I understand his motivation for not changing locale. Where are those snoopy press people when you need them, to take Ilyas photo and out him as NOT dead.
Looks like Devin's monologue about the life she had before she met him had its effect. I know it affected me. The first thing she said was "I had friends". That was before she mentioned her successful practice as a psychologist. She said all she'd lost in a monotone, with SO sad eyes.
Did we miss something about why Hulya has any chance of legally getting her grandchildren away from their mother?
Cihan is looking very Zen these days. He's determined to harm his (former) family but looks like he's always reciting a mantra. He even looked neutral when he pushed Tolga off the building.
Granny looked daggers at Serap when she seemed to defy Ilyas about something. Is she one of those women who only has room in her heart for males. She certainly sobbed over Serhat, a waste of space in Istanbul.
Will we see a time lapse? Will Devin end up in the pokey for what she said about her "wife's salary"? Will Novelera throw her remote at the TV about Hulya's newest outrage?
Niecie, thank you for the recap. I'm starting to really not like Devin. Bashing Aslan with the glass was ridiculous. She's a psychologist? She can't control her emotions one bit! Aslan is protecting her and she acts crazy. Idiot.
Yay for Leyla burning the portrait! It's one more step in dismantling the whole Hulya family farce.
Cihan..maybe he's faking his anger at his family and is something of a "double agent" infiltrating the enemy camp. I hope so. Hulya deserves his anger, but Leyla & Aslan do not.
Serap could turn against Ilya, if he did abuse her. In a twisted way, maybe a relationship with Cihan would give her the courage to break free.
Am I nuts to want Aslan to have an HEA, even though he has killed people?
