I got a 7-day free subscription to VIX so I could binge the entire series, including Temporada 3.
No spoilers, I promise.
Cons: the usual coincidences, misunderstandings, betrayals.
Big Con: Pablo. I don't know if the probem was the actor, the acting, or the writing, but he seemed like such a passive character, so easily mislead, not at all what one would expect from, say, a Bernstein or Woodward (for you young'ens, the reporters who cracked the Watergate Scandal back in ancient history).
Pros: Superb casting and acting by everybody (Pablo excepted) especially Rivera. Good dialogue, well-drawn characters. Adult situations. I adored Mirada de Mujer and this was an exceptionally good remake, all things considered.
Anon, thanks for the info on the 7-day free trial for ViX as well as your assessment of the whole series since you saw the original it was based on. . Your comment about the “young’ens” made me smile.
Callar los miedos (Silence the fears)
Pablo is shredding documents while Daniel takes full advantage, shredding Eloisa’s photos! No love lost there! 😊 next, a distraught Pablo confronts Julieta – did she cash the check? She is forced to admit it and he is furious. She apologizes as Pablo tries to shield Daniel from what is transpiring.
Far too much time in this last precious episode was spent on Matilde. I must say I might have been able to understand a great deal more had I understood her diagnosis. Unfortunately, I did not. Julieta is at Matilde’s bedside, bearing flowers. asking how she is. Matilde asks her to leave her alone. Eloisa comes in and Julieta asks to speak with her. As they step out in the hall, it is obvious Matilde is in physical and emotional pain. I think Julieta starts to say something about the check to Eloisa but the doctor is examining Matilde and she lets out a frantic cry so the conversation is cut short as Eloisa runs into her.
Karen and Pablo nosh. I have great difficulty translating anything Karen says. I believe the gist of this is that Pablo is accepting her job offer and going to Spain. Karen seems a bit surprised but there are other emotions flitting across her face, relief prevalent among them.
A family confab with Carmela, Octavio, Eloisa, Antonia, Leticia and Samuel ensues. Most eludes me but Carmela states that Gabriela will be a grand ballerina. In her room, Gaby’s “friend” shows up, comforting her. She gives her a bottle of pills with a warning they are not to be taken more than once a day. Gabriela’s eyes mirror her concern as her friend appears sweaty and slightly out of it. There is little time for conversation as Eloisa comes in and her friend bids her goodbye Octavio enters purposefully with a tray of food; Gabriela visibly stiffens, especially when Octavio makes it clear he is going to spoon feed her. “Respect me” he insists with that icy cold countenance of his; she answers with a biting retort. Eloisa and she have words, Gabriela chokes and calls after her grandmother. Gabriela lies on the bed and wails. Samuel brings in a plate of food for himself. She looks at it her hunger palpable, as they talk with Eloisa and Octavio listening in the hall. Gabriela can’t resist and reaches over and grabs food from her bro’s plate. He gets her laughing and leaves the plate. “Te quiero” she says hugging him as he returns her words. He leaves shutting the door behind him. Eloisa hugs him and Octavio graces him with a rare smile.
A minute later we see Gabriela throwing up. She takes the bottle of pills and throws them against the wall as they scatter across the floor.
Leticia tells Eloisa how important Matilde is to her.
Antonia goes home where Tomas is waiting. He talks about Spain…
Gabriela is at Julieta’s. She tells Gabriela about the check, the one from Carmela, that she cashed. Gabriela soaks it all in. She thinks back to her discussion with Octavio and in the present, shakes her head. Later she recalls Carmela humiliating her. She makes a call…
Diana
Eloisa makes sure Gabriela is sleeping soundly just as Gabriela calls her. She tells her Pablo didn’t cash the check; Julieta did! I think Eloisa’s initial reaction is that it is for Daniel but no, it isn’t. I am assuming Gabriela told her why Julita did it. Eloisa, realizing what truly unfolded, is gripped with regret. As she is hovering in the doorway ready to go to Pablo, she is stopped in her tracks as Pablo is right outside the door. He studiously avoids eye contact as she invites him in. He steps inside and hands her a check to reimburse Carmela for the one Julieta cashed. He starts to leave. She stops him but he cuts her off. He is obviously wounded she thought the worst of him. He is teary-eyed and clearly devastated. He seems steadfast in not allowing himself to give her another chance. Eloisa expresses her love for him; she talks about a dream and again asks forgiveness. He seems bereft of words, managing only “buenos noches” before he leaves. She shuts the door to her present and her future.
Eloisa visits Carmela, asking her about the check, and handing her Pablo’s repayment. I believe Carmela says that Fernanda has returned to Columbia.
Octavio and Antonia talk about Gabriela and then (quite disparagingly) about Pablo and then Eloisa.
Gabriela and Karen meet. Karen natters on, seemingly oblivious to Gabriela’s lack of enthusiasm. She likely never thought (or cared) that by luring Pablo away, Eloisa would be vulnerable to Octavio’s entreaties of forgiveness and reconciliation. Aren’t you happy for me Karen asks? Gabriela shakes her dark mane and rubs salt in the wound espousing the truth that Pablo is very much in love with Eloisa! “Ouch” Karen murmurs taken aback. Gabriela gets up and imperiously stalks out.
Eloisa picks up the keys to her art studio and thinks back to being with Pablo and then he handing her the check and leaving with a cold finality.
Renata arrives, wanting to talk about Samuel. I believe Eloisa calls her family saying the relationship was incestuous. There was also something about Fernanda being abused. Please clarify if you can. Eloisa thanks her for telling her. Renata is shocked when she tells her Pablo is leaving.
All of a sudden, there is screaming and Eloisa runs to Gabriela’s room. She is on the floor, Eloisa cradling her in her arms. Gabriela seems to take responsibility for what she’s done…
Octavio joins Eloisa as we see Gabriela on crutches through a window, hugging Eloisa’s assistant. I believe Octavio asks her to call off the divorce. I couldn’t make her reply but they hug each other tightly.
Pablo gets into a taxi as Eloisa drives up, crossing the street to meet him. They hug and he harkens back to their meeting, their first kiss, telling Eloisa he loves her. Then, she asking him to coffee, their ardor, his last stinging words to her, their lovemaking. Eloisa tries to be supportive, telling him this is a great opportunity. Just then Karen pulls up and runs over, kissing him on the cheek and then Eloisa. Karen clearly rolls her eyes to herself. Pablo thanks Eloisa: she turns and walks across the street. Eloisa turns as she get in her car. Pablo looks as though he is thinking. The next few shots seem to be in slow motion as he gets in the cab. Eloisa speeds off and that is where we end.
No tying everything up with a pretty bow tonight. While this may not have been a cliffhanger, things are still up in the air…at least in my humble opinion. I wish I could have understood more and translated better. Kindly fill in, add to/correct as you see fit. I look forward to reading everyone’s sure to be marvelous insights and comments.
Diana
Jarifa, first and foremost, I would like to thank you for your incredible translations of the spoken and unspoken word. You brought everything to life in vivid color and illuminated exquisitely. You gave the precious gift of your time and gave it so generously. I could never have gotten through this without you or without your kind words and unwavering support. Thank you…
Maggie, Liz and Susan, thank you for your nice words and all of your wry and wonderful contributions. I am truly grateful and can’t wait to see what you have to say!
Anon, thank you for the info on VIX! I actually liked Diego Klein’s performance; I think Pablo’s sensitivity is one of the main reasons Eloisa fell in love with him…
Diana
I referred to "Gabriela" rather than "Matilde" in several instances. I thought I'd corrected them all but didn't. Apologies!
Diana
Before anything else, I want to thank Diana for starting and keeping the coverage of this series going. Without her efforts, this patio would have never existed.
Above all, Pablo is upset that when Julieta cashed that check he ended up looking like a swindler in her eyes.
Matilde didn't follow the doctor's orders about keeping off her foot to let it heal and did so much damage to it by trying to dance on it that she will no longer be able to dance again. Julieta is sorry. Matilde doesn't believe her and feels that she wanted to just get rid of her since her mother started going out with Pablo. Julieta talks to Eloísa and tells her that if she had known that Matilde couldn't be on point for six weeks . . . Eloísa cuts her off saying she would have thrown her out of her school. Matilde would rather suffer an injury like she did than experience Julieta's rejection. Julieta refuses to take responsibility for Matilde's ballet career ending. Eloísa believes her daughter has a lot of talent but she could not care less about ballet being her career. Julieta needs to know that her child must not be the only one feeling very pressured in Julieta's school. Julieta also tells Eloísa that Pablo is not a swindler. The conversation is over because Matilde is screaming at the doctor that she wants to be left alone.
Karen is not surprised that Pablo's relationship with Eloísa has gone to hell. (She starts to poison the well in reference to Eloísa) Eloísa is a spoiled rich woman. She must have been excited at first being with a guy 12 years younger than she. That he was from a run of the mill neighborhood didn't make a difference until things got tough and she had to put her prejudices to the test. That is when she judged him just like her mother. As he is a friend, she just had to be truthful with him . . . Pablo tells her he needs an advance from his job in Girona. She concludes that he must have decided to take the job. He thinks it is too much of an opportunity to waste. She will take care of the advance. It is hard for her to stop smiling.
Matilde's family has gathered because she has not touched any food or drink since she left the hospital. What to do? Octavio thinks she is rebelling because she knows she will never dance again. Carmela blames Eloísa. Eloísa refuses to be a mother like she is. Leticia is there as friend and psychologist to give them advice. Matilde needs treatment.
Matilde's friend Alana (who looks like death warmed over) gives her weight loss pills because Matilde is sure she is going to get fat lying around in bed with her injured foot. Alana makes it clear that she only take one pill a day. She could kill herself if she took more. Matilde thinks that maybe committing suicide would be the quickest way out of her situation. Alana tells her not to talk like that. Alana says she has to come see her dance in May.
After Matilde rejects the food and her father, her mother comes in to tell her what her options are if she doesn't eat. There are two. Either she can go to a treatment center and find out why she doesn't want to eat or they can hospitalize her and have her fed by a tube. That gets Matilde's attention. They will not allow her to die from not eating.
Samuel comes in with a plate of food for himself. She tells him that she doesn't know who she is if she is not a ballerina. Eloísa and Octavio are outside listening to it all. He understands her having been through something similar. She doesn't want to eat because she doesn't want to get fat. Fat girls cannot be ballerinas. He says but everyone dances. She says she is referring to ballet. He is referring to dancing and that feeling you get when you let yourself go with the music. She grabs a quesadilla off his plate and takes a bite. He tells her to look at her situation as an opportunity to deal with something really tough. Use their mother as an example. She got a bad deal but she got herself together and moved on ahead and has never looked happier. He says that Matilde is a bad *ss, brave and stubborn. She laughs. He leaves. She goes to throw up.
Antonia tells Tomás that Gabriela (not her father) called him to offer him a job at the law firm.
Gabriela tells Julieta that her ex Jeffery was very careful in the legalities he had drawn up with relationship to the ballet school. There is no way they can make him pay for anything. The only way for Julieta to get out of debt is to sell the school. Julieta explains about the check she cashed by mistake.
Pablo appears at Eloísa's house with check in hand and is cold and formal with Eloísa. She asks him to please forgive her and he cuts her off. He says he will send her the rest of the money he owes her mother in a few days when he gets his advance from his job in Spain. She asks when he decided to go. He answers it was the day after she called him an opportunist but, or course, that wasn't exactly the way she put it. He explains that he never realized what her mother would do to stop them from being together. Eloísa will never forgive her. Pablo will because he understands her. Her mother was raised with rigid standards just like she probably raised her own children. So, what was her mother going to think of a 30 year old journalist with a ten year old car who couldn't pay his rent? Of course, she would expect that he would go for her million peso offer. What he never expected was that Eloísa would believe it, too. She ended up believing what everybody believed except she wasn't "everybody." She was the woman he fell in love with like a fool.
Octavio tells Antonia that he had nothing to do with hiring Tomás. Gabriela is free to hire her own team. He sarcastically says how lucky they are that Tomás didn't go to work with the great Pablo Casas. Antonia lets him know that Pablo is going to Spain. He wants to know all of the details . She asks why it is so important to him. Is it because he wants to get back with her mother? Oh no, of course not! He is only concerned because Pablo was taking advantage of her mother. Antonia's smile says "sure."
Gabriela comes to see Karen and finds out that Paco and Eloísa broke up. Karen is almost giddy as she thinks that is the best news ever. Gabriela concludes that is why Pablo is going to Spain. Karen says not exactly but it helped. It turns out that Eloísa believes that Pablo accepted the money that Carmela offered him to stay away from her. Karen is pleased she will have Pablo feeling spiteful towards Eloísa and far away from her. Yes, Karen will be going with Pablo at first to introduce him and get him settled. Then she will be coming and going over ten weeks. Karen asks a stone-faced Gabriela if she is not happy for her. Gabriela says she is but the other day at the event she noticed how Eloísa and Pablo were so in love. She doesn't believe that they broke up. Karen tells her not to be stupid. That relationship doesn't have a future. Gabriela tells her she is the stupid one thinking that she can force Pablo to fall in love with her. That isn't how love works. Karen says "OUCH". Karen understands how Gabriela must be afraid because Eloísa will now be alone but it isn't her fault that Pablo and Eloísa broke up. Then, Karen saw an opportunity and decided to take it. Gabriela notes that Karen presented herself as "only a friend" to Pablo and had no concern for her or Julieta. She wishes her good luck because she will need it. Karen is left in shock.
Eloisa picks up the keys from the room where she and Pablo spent their romantic interlude. She remembers it was called temictli . . . dream in Nahuatl.
Renata comes to see Eloísa but doesn't want to talk about Samuel. Eloísa does. She says what Renata did was like incest. What if he fell in love with her.?Renata announces that is why she decided to stop drinking. What happened with Samuel was ALMOST touching bottom. Renata corrects her: it WAS touching bottom. Eloísa thinks considering that Zoe , her daughter is going to have a baby and since she is going to be a grandmother, it is good she decided to quit drinking. Renata says that she really came to talk about Fernanda. She saw Fernanda changing clothes in a boutique where she was and she noticed that Fernanda had marks on her back, just like the ones she has. She is worried that Fernanda is being physically abused by her husband. Eloísa says she will make sure to talk to her sister. Renata was worried that if she didn't tell Eloísa and something happened like her sister being killed, then Eloísa would have two things to not forgive her for.
Matilde is hysterical because she just found out that her friend Alana died from a heart attack. Matilde blames herself. Alana wasn't eating or sleeping this last last year and she did nothing about it. Eloísa tells her it isn't her fault. Matilde insists it is and then begs her mother to help her. She cannot keep going on like this. Eloísa holds and rocks her telling her they will take care of it together.
It looks like Matilde is on her way to a treatment center. Octavio arrives at Eloisa's and starts blaming himself for Matilde's problems. Eloísa tells him it isn't anybody's fault. This started way before their separation. He is afraid she will die like her friend. Eloísa insists she will recover. The important thing is that Matilde is asking for help herself. Octavio tells her that he will be signing the divorce as soon as she wants him to. He is only asking that they remain a united front when it comes to parenting their children. Eloísa says of course. They are always going to be their children's parents. They hug.
Diana and Jarifa – You two outdid yourselves this time! Outstanding.
Thank you both for your marathon recapping – and every single night!!! I don’t know how you did it.
And I do want to thank the whole patio for being such delightful company, unfailingly kind. I just loved all the comments and observations.
In this episode I particularly loved the exchange between Gabriela and Karen. When Karen was all triumphant about Pablo going to Spain with her and was ripping on Eloise, Gabriela saw right through it, then zinged her and walked out. Go, Gabriela!
I’ve been thinking about Univision/Televisa’s approach. Obviously they are hoping a tidal wave of viewers will sign up for VIX’s paid subscription to see the rest. I wonder if that will work. But there’s also this: They’ve already paid to make the show. If they broadcast it, they get advertising dollars. Lots, I would imagine. Which is the best way to monetize their creation? That must be the question that went around the board room. I wonder if they will decide to broadcast the rest later. That way they would have their new subscribers and also get advertising dollars. I hope that is their choice! But the advertisers might say Most people already watched it on VIX so we won’t pay as much. Hmm.
Jarifa, thank you for this masterpiece. Brilliant, start to finish.
You filled in all of my gaps perfectly. Pablo's sadness was illuminated by your descriptive words. In retrospect, Eloisa should have believed him, trusted him! Their last, long, lingering looks were heartbreaking.
I heard "heart attack" but did not realize Alana died! How tragic...Astute of Eloisa to say "Julieta needs to know that her child must not be the only one feeling very pressured in Julieta's school". Julieta was cold and aloof. Sad that both Karen and Julieta are rather ruthless; Pablo deserves so, so much more. It was rather interesting that in her own way, Gabriela seemed much more human, didn't she? I'm glad Julieta has to sell the school.
Gabriela's career as a ballet dancer is over. I hope her physical and emotional therapy helps her to heal. "Octavio arrives at Eloisa's and starts blaming himself for Matilde's problems". Truth or lie?? I fear the latter, he may have some resolve initially but his nasty nature will not be easy to change.
So many threads left hanging and we are left to wonder and ponder.
This was excellent. Again, thank you Jarifa for bringing all of this to life and our wonderful patio for their sharp insights.
More later...
Diana
Another great episode. I never thought that my favorite character
would turn out to be Gabriela who, in spite of being the other woman, is highly ethical. Loved her telling goofy Karen what’s what. The writers did an exceptional job with her as with all the characters.
The best performance for me last night was Klein as “on the verge of tears” Pablo expressing his outrage that Eloísa turned out to be just like her mother when he thought she was somebody special.
Most interesting plot twist: Fernanda being the victim of physical abuse?
Saddest scene last night: Eloísa waiting longingly for just that one look from Pablo as she sat in her car ready to pull away. Of course, he finally does try to catch her eye, but she is long gone by then.
Maggie, thank you very much.
"When Karen was all triumphant about Pablo going to Spain with her and was ripping on Eloise, Gabriela saw right through it, then zinged her and walked out. Go, Gabriela!" Exactly! Karen was so manipulative and was never a friend I suspect. It just isn't part of her makeup.
This and all of your insights were greatly appreciated.
Diana
Maggie, thanks, it was fun filling in on this one and not being responsible for anything. As for Univision/Televisa, they did the same with the 2 season 16 episode “El extraño retorno de Diana Salazar” back in February. I recapped that one. No news of when or if the final season will ever be aired. I understand their marketing but resent it at the same time. Interesting comment about how they might decide to “monetize” their creation. I wonder if enough viewers signed up for ViX to see season 3 of Diana Salazar that it supported this move. Unless you are watching Univision free via antenna tv which I do at times, you are already paying for Univision via cable or some streaming service. Getting tired of being nickeled and dimed to death. They seem to be doing this only with their specially produced series and not their novelas. “Papás por siempre” starts a season 2/ 82 episode run tonight.
Jarifa, loved your comments.
"I never thought that my favorite character would turn out to be Gabriela who, in spite of being the other woman, is highly ethical". YES!!! Who knew?? I think all of us are appreciating Gabriela. What a shocking but very welcome twist.
I completely agree that "The best performance for me last night was Klein as “on the verge of tears.” There is something so earnest, so Clark Kent-ish about his character and his kindness. It was hard to watch his disillusion with Eloisa. She must have been devastated hearing him "... expressing his outrage that Eloísa turned out to be just like her mother when he thought she was somebody special". As Karen would say "ouch"...
Another exceptional installment that has me yearning for more...I'll have to look into VIX to see if they have some kind of trial offer. I fear Uni will never air the third installment...
Ms. Rivera is back after something around a 17 year absence. It's as though she didn't miss a beat.
Diana
No need for thanks, Diana. It was a pleasure being able to help out but not responsible for anything! The writers did such a beautiful job writing this novela. There were so many unexpected nuances as in the characters of Gabriela and Renata. Then the plot surprises like when Renata and Sami actually had sex. I NEVER thought they would go there. Then they taught us a word in Nahuatl! They kept us guessing which made it a fun watch. As for the cast and acting, it was the best.
Back later.
Thanks so much, Diana and Jarifa, for letting us all know what was going on daily in this telenovela. I did not realize that Pablo felt Eloisa turned out to be just like her mother. That must have hurt Eloisa.
It was good of Gabriela to tell Eloisa the truth about the money, but I feel part of it had to be for her own best interests. It would be better for her relationship with Octavio if Eloisa was very unavailable to Octavio. Meanwhile Pablo is mad at Eloisa but is blind to Karen’s manipulations. And I think he was pretty clueless about Julieta until it smacked him in the face.
It looks like Renata and Eloisa will become friends again. And a new plot is added with her maybe sister being abused by the husband. I don’t remember any mention of Renata being abused by her husband, so not sure if it had been mentioned before or not.
I wondered why there was always something about Vix on the screen at the end of each episode, now I know! That was disappointing. They never intended to air the whole show. It sounds like it’s only on the Vix you pay for, not on the free one. But I’m not sure about that. I wonder if they bleep out all those words when they show it on Vix! But I may have to make up my own ending to the show!
Thanks, Diana and Jarifa, for faithfully recapping this show. I enjoyed the recaps and shows and appreciate your daily work on this.
Liz
Thanks so much Liz. This has been a fantastic show and an equally amazing patio.
Great observations including "It was good of Gabriela to tell Eloisa the truth about the money, but I feel part of it had to be for her own best interests. It would be better for her relationship with Octavio if Eloisa was very unavailable to Octavio". I completely agree. While relieved Gabriela told Eloisa, there certainly was more than a scintilla of self interest involved.
You are also spot on about Pablo being clueless about Karen. I can't wait for her to show her two faced self.
I have a sneaking suspicion that Renata and Sam might not be over. Anyone else? :)
Diana
Jarifa, after mulling this over a bit, I don't think Univision has the slightest intention of airing the third season of Mirada. I'll go further and (as much as it pains me) regretfully say I don't believe season three of Diana Salazar will air on Uni either.
Longer TNs (Vencer, Papas) have time to cultivate a following and sequels/continuations make perfect sense. People likely won't remember all of the details but they likely remember the heart of the story and the main players. Viewers know the shows will air where the originals did - Univision. I fear too much time has elapsed for Diana. While many of us here are devoted to the storyline, will enough viewers tune in to make it worth Uni's while? It seems unlikely those who haven't watched the first two seasons will tune in to watch the last. Also, have the majority already watched (or plan on watching) season three on VIX? (Same question for Mirada).
I'm wrong about so much but I'd be just fine if I am wrong about this too...
Diana
Diana, I think you are most likely right about them not airing the third and final season of either series. What you wrote makes total sense. Also, they never quite let the viewer know how many seasons a series will have at the beginning. Guess it is a case of viewer beware. : (
I can’t believe Carlos’ parents are forcing him to marry Crazy Tamara! She’s nuts. It must be Leonardo’s baby. Why would anyone want their son to marry such a crazy person without dna evidence? Manuel wasn’t as sure about it. Carolina even told Carlos some of her backstory. The situations are different. Carlos would take responsibility whereas the Padre knew nothing and his family wouldn’t take responsibility. Did Carolina's family reject her at the time? I don’t recall. Tamara wouldn’t be in that situation with financial support available. So, I don’t see the parallels.
It was funny watching Catalina's son’s friend call out Lorena for using him to pay her tab!
Babachita
Babachita
Diana, thank you so much for your excellent recaps. Jarifa, thank you so much further extras. You two are a dynamic duo.
I thought that things were finally lightening up for me, and I would be able to hang out here and comment more often, but I am still picking up the, pieces of my spring , summer, and early fall problems. Looking forward to " Papas.". Susan
Thank you for your nice words Susan!
I know life gets in the way sometimes but you were missed...
I'm planning on watching Montverde, hope to see you there!
Although I'm likely not going to continue, I did watch the debut of Papas tonight. If you (or anyone else) watched and would like to discuss where we are now as opposed to where the original ended, perhaps we can discuss tomorrow.
Diana
Do you think this is being cut? It seemed very choppy. Definitely the very end of some scenes were trimmed off, but maybe that was to fit in ads.
I had trouble orienting myself with the new actors playing some of the kids. I had to wipe some cobwebs away to remember the past story, but it started coming back. Does anybody remember who Lila is? She seems to be estranged from the family but I don’t recall her at all.
They are bringing in some new characters played by actors I really like. All in all, this is a fun bit of fluff, like cotton candy for the brain. Well, there was some sad stuff like Chano’s ex-wife being inexplicitly dead. She looked plenty healthy the last time we saw her. I guess the actress didn’t want to sign on again. And Chano decides just now he’ll tell his son she’s dead and not just on a trip?
Also, I was very sorry to see the abuela suddenly pass away, right there on the couch. She went out happy, at least. She was a great character and I loved the actress. I wonder why they wrote her out. She was very important to the story before, an anchor to the family.
I do think if you have a household full of kids you’re responsible for you shouldn’t be jumping out of planes together.
