MIRADA #4 Part 1

El despertar de Eloisa (Eloisa’s Awakening)

Eloisa is taking pictures of their beautiful room as Octavio sits outside. She hears Octavio’s phone ring and while he lies on a chair on the balcony, she picks it up. There are a series of texts that I’m assuming are from Gabriela. Alarmed, she opens his laptop as he comes into the room. She looks frozen and asks about the other woman. Contesta she screams. He asks if she is serious and goes on an angry offense. She is quiet but her face reflects her devastation. She reaches the boiling point and again tells him to answer her. She gets dressed and leaves as he calls out after her. He reads the email which I couldn’t see.

Renata and Pablo are working when she says something about her child. A distraught Eloisa calls Renata as Pablo stares. Octavio has another woman she tells her; what a surprise on her anniversary. Octavio has packed in record time as he catches up to her, rolling suitcases in hand. Meanwhile, Octavio’s phone continues to ring. A concerned Pablo asks if Eloisa is all right and Renata responds that no she isn’t! He rushes off after giving her a kiss on the cheek. Renata downs a shot.

In the car, Eloisa leans back as they discuss the situation. She says” nunca” (I’m not sure of the question) and shakes her head.

Gabriela ends up at Karen’s who offers a comforting hug to her cheating, heartless amiga.

Matilde is salivating as her friend decimates a chocolate bar with great relish.

Antonia doesn’t seem to be feeling well as she talks with her boyfriend, Tomas.

Pablo ends up at his ex’s, Julieta’s, to pick up his son who wants pepperoni pizza. He seems to have a good relationship with her and a better one with his son.

Eloisa and Octavio arrive home. She wheels her suitcase in. Once inside, she holds her stomach, crying in grief and pain. He sees all the texts Gabriela has left him. He opens his laptop and sees her emails; he closes it in anger. Eloisa is looking at her artwork, and doubling over in anguish, she rips the canvas from its frame, holding it as she sits on the floor. She then puts it in a trash bag (where it belongs I say approvingly). Octavio hears the commotion and sees her outside, putting the bag into the garbage. He stares…

The next morning, Octavio is in the kitchen when Eloisa leaves the house. He follows her out, then knocks on her window. I’m not sure if he asks her what she plans on doing. We next see Eloisa at the ballet academy, introducing herself to Pablo’s ex. They discuss Matilde’s talent and potential. After, Eloisa remembers talking with Pablo. She either sees or imagines a couple which confused me.

MIRADA #4 Part 2

An angry Octavio enters Gabriela’s confronting her (so much is bleeped out it must have been profanity laced). She pleads it wasn’t her intention (I gather to hurt Eloisa). He screams Eloisa is HIS WIFE (NOW he remembers it??). He reminds her how many years he and Eloisa have been married and that they share THREE children. She screams something at him that I didn’t understand but he is rattled. She tells him to leave. He hands her back her keys and seems to threaten her. Kindly fill in if you can. She puts her hands over her face and cries.

Pablo’s son runs into Eloisa, and Pablo is not far behind she notes what a coincidence it is. He explains Julieta is his ex, and Eloisa seems to like her. He calls Eloisa hermosa and intelligent. Just then, Octavio calls her just then to spoil the moment. Pablo asks her for coffee the next day. He looks after her longingly.

Octavio pulls his portrait from the trash and starts to dust it off. Antonia comes in and watches him through the window as he tries to straighten out the canvas. He rolls it up and puts it in a case as her eyes well up with tears.

Pablo, Julieta and their son are having coffee and ice cream.

Octavio comes into the bedroom to find Eloisa laying her clothes on the bed, seemingly ready to pack. Did he say he’s ended the affair? I couldn’t follow their conversation although Eloisa does say the most important thing is family. He tries to kiss her on the neck but she gets up and leaves.

Gabriela boo hoos to Karen.

Eloisa is in the shower when Octavio comes in behind her and starts kissing her. She doesn’t listen to me when I yell at the TV, telling her to make him get lost. The water cascades over them as she reciprocates her ardor and we mercifully see no more.

Antonia talks with her parents as Matilde comes in. Octavio seems uncomfortable with the discussion and takes his leave. Samuel soon joins the group.

Gabriela was obviously in bed with a man. I was typing and glanced up too late to get a good look. Is it anyone we know?

Octavio kneels next to Eloisa who still seems shaken up. He leaves as she silently busies herself …

There was much I could not translate. Everything seemed to be moving quickly although it was distressing Eloisa yielded to Octavio. Your help in clarifying what I missed or got wrong would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

MIRADA
Thanks, Diana, for covering tonight's episode so well. So much happened.

Translation of what was on the phone and the email Gabriela left for Octavio. The phone calls came from "unknown" and messages were left each time. The e-mail came from "colibri (hummingbird) 92": "So, you are having such a good time with your wife at the cabin that your rented for us that you can't even answer messages. What the hell! Coward. Fake. Liar. I hate you . F*** off!

After Octavio complains about how much he hates that Antonia is so open about sleeping with her boyfriend, Eloísa says that her daughter has NEVER lied to her about where or who she was sleeping with

Matilde's ballet friend is into bulimia. Matilde ends up getting accepted at the dance school for a probationary 3 month period. The director (Julieta) tells Eloísa it is a matter of talante (will) and not talento (talent) on Matilde's part.

Gabriela screams back at Octavio that it isn't all about him. She is sick of getting only the crumbs of his time or being his entertainment when he is bored. He is not the victim. If his wife is suffering, it is because he cheated on her not because his lover sent an email. As Octavio is handing her the keys, he informs her he will not be back. She tells him not to even think about it. He thought that she was mature enough to know what she was getting into and what he was risking to be with her. What a mistake he made!!

Thanks for the laugh, Diana: "She doesn’t listen to me when I yell at the TV, telling her to make him get lost. The water cascades over them as she reciprocates her ardor and we mercifully see no more." I have a feeling that Octavio is going to be a repeat offender. . .

Things are moving along, finally. Carolina is in Miami. Back home, Lorena found Manuel at work. She’d have liked to do something, but was gracious in agreeing that he should be with his daughter. I like Lorena, but even if she’s thoughtful, she and Manuel will cause a lot of harm.

Carlos is very keen on Cristina but he agreed to slow down. I like that about him , Tamara runs and hugs him, with Cristina watching.

Carolina was impressed with her protege, especially when Cristinsa showed enough knowledge to hide the dress flaw for all the photos, saving the day’s work.

Maria Luisa finally told her son, Father S ,that he’s a dad.

What’s going to happen when everyone finds this out?

Mirada

Terrific recap, Diana, and also details from Jarifa. So helpful and hugely appreciated! Eloisa was putting clothes on the bed to make a stack for donation. And no, I don’t think we’ve seen the fellow before who Gabriela was in bed with.

I’m so impressed with the writing in this show. I loved the exchange between Octavio and Gabriela. There was her pointing out that the pain Eloisa is feeling is due to his having an affair, not to her (Gabriela) sending an email. Then he counters that she knew he was married for 25 years and you don’t just ignore all that (he did!) and that look at what he had risked just to be with her. Boy, did he somehow make himself the hero. Jerk.

I liked the scene where Eloisa crumples up the big drawing, but then embraces it before finally stuffing it in a trash bag and toting it out. Octavio watching her out there at the trash can and later retrieving it and trying to flatten it out and dust it while she secretly watches. These wordless scenes said a lot.

At the end he asks if they’re going to be okay and Eloisa says yes. Me, I don’t think so.

A side note: Did you see that blazing bathroom full of candles? Who lit all those? What will they do if the wax gets all over? Nobody put them out when Eloisa left and Octavio followed and they got in the car and headed home. I wonder what the candle budget is for these telenovelas.

Los Hilos

First we gotta have a big ad for Price Shoes! They are excellent! The sales team is so excited! They will make a lot of money selling this fabulous product!

Somehow Cristina saved the day by concealing a rip in the garment she was modeling. Uh oh she almost gets blamed. What if it showed in the photos? But no, it didn’t and she got huge praise for being a professional and saving the day. Oh please. I’m sure fashion shoot people have somebody on hand with a needle and thread. Also, if the seam opened so easily the production people goofed up. Why blame Cristina?

Also, why did they fly all the way to Miami just to shoot against a wall?

There was Carlos romping romantically through the streets with Cristina and uttering classic mujeriego lines to her, only we know he’s sincere. If I heard all that, I’d run. And then they end up in her hotel room but she’s not ready. He’s cool with that. I’m thinking she was brought up by nuns and just left the orphanage which seems to have all girls, so no, she wouldn’t be ready.

I enjoy the scenes with Manuel. He’s great. The Lore actress is great too, and sweet Marisol, the Tarot lady and her son. And now we have the hopeful renter who we know will reappear even though the rental has been taken. So even if I’m out of patience with Carlos and Cristina, I’m liking these other characters.

Oh and yes Babchita – things are about to get very interesting with the padre!

MIRADA

Jarifa, thank you for all of your marvelous additions! I so appreciate your word by word translation of Gabriela's poisonous "correspondence". :) She did know what she was getting into and men (generally) don't leave their wives for their mistresses.

I felt so much frustration (tinged with hopelessness) when Eloisa capitulated in the shower. It made me want to take one. Blech.

I suspected but wasn't sure that " The director (Julieta) tells Eloísa it is a matter of talante (will) and not talento (talent) on Matilde's part". Sad her friend has bulimia, I hope Matilde doesn't follow suit.

"I have a feeling that Octavio is going to be a repeat offender". . .Me too.

Diana

MIRADA

Thanks so much Maggie! I'm also enjoying this; the writing, the actors everything is on point.

Initially, Octavio seemed underwhelmed by Eloisa's sketch. I was shocked Octavio ministered so tenderly to it (whether it was because he actually liked it or if it was merely the idea of it doesn't matter I suppose). "These wordless scenes said a lot" was perfect.

"At the end he asks if they’re going to be okay and Eloisa says yes. Me, I don’t think so". Ditto!

I did notice the dozens of candles burning brightly! Talk about a fire hazard. No expense spared there. :)

Diana

MIRADA

Diana, Univision did a good job of trying to only show part of that note for a second because of its crudity (or would that be crudité? LOL ) since the title of the correspondence was "f*** off." On ViX, it was a different story. This is such a short series, I hope we do not go down the bulimia road. We do not need complicated subplots with only 16 episodes.

MIRADA

Jarifam I laughed at crudity vs, crudité. :) Well the title would certainly explain why part of the note was shown so briefly.

Just no to the bulimia theme. While the topic is an important one, this is far too brief to give that the attention it deserves plus I think we are going to need every second to bring the plotlines we already have to conclusion.

Hopefully Jarifa will be able to do so when she returns.

Liz- I think. Found your comments! It looks like you posted on thread number 1 instead of thread number 2!

Thanks, Maggie! I will move comments over.

Miranda

Thanks Diana and Jarifa, you guys make a perfect team, Diana, you give a great review of all the events and then Jarifa fills in any difficult translations.

It was very frustrating to not be able to read the e-mail. But it did prove she had no idea he had rented it with someone else in mind-and on their anniversary! But thanks for telling us what it said, Jarifa.

Is Gabriela going to keep working with Octavio? It seems she said something about that to Karen, but I couldn’t translate it.

I still don’t know how this will end soon. I feel like it’s just beginning!

Liz

Hilos

I was surprised to see Tamara at the airport, although I shouldn’t have been. She’s going to be a thorn in Carlos’s side, what a persistent thing she is. And I’ll be very surprised if Cristina still wants to still be Carlos’s novia.

I thought Ramiro was just creepy when he met Manuel. Manuel seems a little put off by him. I wonder how much Omar knows about his father. He didn’t seem bothered about the way his dad talked about Carolina. And if he’s in love with Romita he wouldn’t be happy with his dad wanting her mother to “pay”.

I can’t like Lorena. She’s just a little too pushy with Manuel. She’s waiting for a chance to jump his bones. And she barely tolerates Ricardo. She should gently tell him he hasn’t got a chance. Marisol did seem to believe that Lorena looks on Manuel as a father figure. And Marisol is obviously very interested in Ricardo.

I think the man that came about the apartment was the man Ricardo recommended. So hopefully he’ll be back. And another romance will be here!

I couldn’t believe his mother told Salvador he had a daughter. I don’t think she’ll be found until the very end. But Carolina needs to tell Manuel about her past.

Mirada and Hilos

Thanks Maggie, that’s where they are! I don’t know how to move them. I wrote a lot on one of them. A lot for me! So I don’t want to retype them. I guess I’ll just say look at the last two comments on page 1 if you want to read them! I guess I wasn’t paying attention to what I was doing!

Liz

MIRADA

Maggie and Jarifa, thank you for finding and reoposting Liz's comments.

Liz, thanks for your nice words. I'll echo your musing in not imagining how this will all be wound up with so few episodes. And we can't possibly know everythig yet because as you noted this is indeed "just beginning". :)

I am completely puzzled as to Eloisa's forgiving Octavio. And right away too!!

It would be beyond awkward for Octavio and Gabriela to continue to work together but perhaps even more to explain if they don't continue to do so. This will be interesting.

MIRADA #5, Part 1

"Tras la sombra de Gabriela" (In the Shadow of Gabriela)

We see a swimming pool where two people are doing laps, their arms gently but firmly cutting the water as they glide the length of the pool. Ahhh, it’s Eloisa and Octavio. Leticia and Villalobos look on (somewhat) approvingly. Leticia does not seem kindly disposed toward Octavio. They talk and Leticia seems to caution her. Meanwhile Octavio and Villalobos take a steam and discuss Octavio’s matrimonial woes, especially Gabriela in detail. I cannot add specifics during these brief confabs I’m afraid.

Eloisa murmurs Gabriela’s name out loud and speak of the devil, we next see Gabriela calling Samuel about her photos.

Gabriela greets Octavio, Villalobos and another gentlemen Ismael (I think) as they sit down for a meeting. (Did he call Villalobos “pa”?) Octavio gives her the side eye. After the meeting, Gabriela seems to be flirting, not unnoticed by Octavio.

Eloisa and Renata discuss her situation, Eloisa thoughtfully relating how nervous Octavio has been. Finally, she gets her computer and we see Gabriela gracing the cover of a magazine. Renata ID’s her as the woman at the airport who was with Octavio!

Pablo stopped for a bite at his favorite restaurant. Renata slides into the seat across from him. She slips him a card on which she has written Eloisa’s phone number!

Once home, Eloisa confronts Octavio with Gabriela and mentions Antonia as well. She is accusatory but Octavio acts as the injured party. She asks him what his intentions are but there is an ill-timed knock on the door.

Pablo talks with a man (I assume a source or mole) who has a stack of paperwork. He pushes across the desk to him; I’m thinking it must be pertinent to a case Pablo is investigating. Pablo puts his head in his hand and stares thoughtfully.

Eloisa’s phone rings off and all I can make out from the texts is that they are from Pablo. He calls her and she is polite. Conversation turns to Octavio but he continues to be gentle and sweet. Kindly add more details if you can.

Karen and Julieta have lunch. No doubt Karen is extremely interested in all the divorce deets as she wants to spirit Pablo away the second he is free.

Diana

MIRADA #5, Part 2

Eloisa drops Matilde off at school. She tries to talk to her daughter but Matilde avoids conversation saying she will be late.

Eloisa calls Renata and asks her about her plan regarding Pablo. Eloisa says some flattering things about him, especially that he is special. We next see Pablo having milk and cookies. Literally. Oh, and Julieta is there. Extrano. They get into a heavy conversation and she asks him to forgive her. He says it’s OK and she says it’s not. She is confused. She walks up to him and they start kissing. (Side note: do we know why they are divorcing?)

Eloisa is curled up on her side asleep as Octavio finally puts down his computer. She gives him the cold shoulder and says buenos noches. No nookie tonight. Good.

Gadabout Karen is now with Gabriela. Gabriela went on a rant I couldn’t understand but Karen looked a bit rattled and incredulous.

Eloisa insists Matilde have something to eat. She takes one bite and puts down the food and flies out. She later receives texts showing emojis throwing up. She goes to the bathroom to vomit.

Samuel leaves his room, with the folder containing the pictures of Gabriela on his desk, out in the open.

Pablo drops Julieta off at work (with dialogue uninterpreted) and waves.

Gabriela, Octavio, Villalobos and Ismael seem to have words. Gabriela leaves, Octavio leaves them alone and chases after Gabriela. He follows her to her car, obviously angry, consumed with the green eyed monster.

Eloisa is preparing to start a new art project as Samuel calls her and asks her to get the folder with Gabriela’s pictures. She calls him back as she goes through them, saying Gabriela’s name (yet again), very upset.

Eloisa still has her paint splattered work apron on as she gets in the car throwing the photos on the passenger seat.

Octavio, the seething with jealousy rat, has obviously followed Gabriela home. They are screaming at each other and he is pushing her. We instinctively know where this is going, don’t we? Meanwhile, Eloisa’s phone alarm goes off and she drives to a building where she sees Octavio’s car. She goes to the front desk as we see Octavio and Gabriela in bed. Gabriela’s buzzer rings and she gets out of bed. Eloisa, struggling emotionally, heart in her throat, finally reaches her destination and stands in front of the door.

Well we knew Octavio would cave but this certainly was in record time, wasn’t it??

I apologize but understood very little. Kindly fill in; your comments and insights are greatly appreciated!

Diana

MIRADA

Diana, nothing ever to apologize about. Your efforts are always appreciated. You say you understood very little but you got just about everything. Thank you! There was a lot of dialogue but very little drove the action.

I never heard any reason for why Pablo and Julieta are divorcing. It seems like they had a final hurrah for their good old times together but it won't be happening again.

Gabriela is dating Villalobos' son. The fact that she could move on that easily is driving Octavio nuts.

Gabriela leaves a meeting with Villalobos, his son Ismael and Octavio. When she is out of ear shot, Villalobos says he has noticed how his son looks at her and classifies her as a "mega good lay." His son cannot believe he is saying that. If one of the feminists were to hear him they would sue him. He asks Octavio to agree. Before he can say anything , Villalobos reminds them they are men talking among themselves He thinks his own son might have an interest in her.
His son says he refuses to talk about anyone like that with whom he might have a serious relationship. That perks up Octavio's ears and moves his legs to go running after her.

So, now Matilde is becoming bulimic but I really do not care.

Eloísa is doing her son a favor delivering those photos. Okay . . .

Gee, I wonder wonder what Octavio could be doing that would raise his heart rate and blood pressure and set the alarm off on Eloísa's phone. . . Hmmmm Sorry but I couldn't resist. He is such a rat!!!

MIRADA

Jarifa, thank you for your gracious, supportive words. I so appreciate all of your insight and masterful translations!

"Villalobos says he has noticed how his son looks at her and classifies her as a "mega good lay" was so crass and vulgar; no wonder he and Octavio are friends. Leticia (and certainly Eloisa) deserve so much better. Ismael's declaration showed he is a cut above (despite his poor taste). Octavio and Gabriela are detestable; like seeks like doesn't it?

Gabriela played Octavio like a pro; she knew exactly how to manipulate him.

Loved "Gee, I wonder wonder what Octavio could be doing that would raise his heart rate and blood pressure and set the alarm off on Eloísa's phone". HA! Perfect! Yes, he certainly is a rat, now caught in a trap.

I can't wait to see what happens!

Diana

Mirada

Diana, I am super grateful for your recap and Jarifa I thank you too! Tonight my captions were squirrelly. They showed just every other line. When that happens I have to re-boot my TV but I didn’t want to re-boot during the show. The writing is much more complex than we usually get with TNs and I need those captions! You two saved the day for me!

I think Pablo’s wife (now ex) had an affair with some other man. She was confundida I think she said.

I too noticed how Eloisa had her art apron on when she jumped in the car. By the time she arrived, she’d taken it off somehow.

Hilos

This time we get an ad for a big fabric shop. Carolyn’s sidekick takes her there and Carolyn seems amazed. You’d think a designer would know about a place like that because they have some really out-there fabrics, fun to see. So fun that the two romp around feeling the goods and unrolling some bolts. An extra shot of the shop’s sign as they leave, just in case we’d forgotten already.

When she arrives home Carolyn tells Manuel that it was a difficult shoot and she’s tired. We saw the shoot – just a few models in dresses striking some poses and a photographer doing his thing. Probably took an hour or so. Not that Carolyn is lying, but that we’re expected to believe that that was a grueling day’s work.

Cristina is devastated by seeing Tamara plant a kiss on Carlos at the airport. He runs over to her place and pounds on the door for her to answer. She does. And here we have another trope – in the first seconds after she answers the door he could blurt out “That’s an old girlfriend I broke up with but she’s pursuing me! It’s over!” But no, he says let me explain and she says no you can’t and he says please and she says no etc etc. Then closes the door.

Later when he comes with mariachis (lots! He must’ve paid big to get a group like that) she won’t come to the window. I thought that was pretty rude. Alternately the other two girls could have gone to the window just to be nice and so that Carlos isn’t embarrassed in front of the mariachis. At least a few locals in the background were enjoying the music. And Cata came down to say some kind and soothing words.

Jarifa, you said you don't like Lorena and you’re right, she’s being a very bad girl. And just for money! But somehow the actress has so much sparkle that I find it hard to dislike her as much as I should.
