Thanks, everyone. Great weekend discussion.
We’ve touched on legal weddings in Türkiye before. The civil wedding is the legal one in Turkey. Yes, novelera, the one with the red book. The religious wedding makes the marriage helal (permissible, allowable) in the eyes of God. So, I suppose you could call it sidestepping in a sense. Unfortunately, there are no legal protections for the woman in this case. Anyway, even a legal marriage doesn’t always protect a woman from abuse or obtain justice for her.
In the Turkish, when Zeynep’s pregnancy was revealed, she shouted something about meeting with an imam, father (hers? boyfriend’s?), and a friend. From that I gathered she might have had or was planning a religious wedding with her boyfriend. That would have “allowed” them to have sexual relations. As far as I know a woman can’t have multiple marriages like a man. There were no English or Turkish subs for this so I can’t be sure. I wish my Turkish was better.
novelera, if they can redeem Azize, then anyone can be redeemed.
I’d go with Ahmet’s pronunciation of Mardin. Sometimes I catch myself thinking of Spanish pronunciation when reading Turkish words. The “i” might be pronounced more like “ee” near the beginning of a word but near the end it could be a bit shortened like Ahmet said. Maybe there are regional differences, too. I’m no expert, this is just what I think I’m hearing. And then there’s the dotless i (ı).
“The thing that really troubles me about Cihan is that he’s a real jerk sometimes.”. I see your point, Maggie. Cihan told Alya, that “the truth has many faces as do people.” This is part of what I like about dizis. Many characters are not written as black or white. There are flawed heroes and villains who might have some redeeming qualities.
I think I have more sympathy for Cihan than some of you. He’s stuck in a situation he never wanted so he’s not a warm and fuzzy guy. He’s got a dry/wry sense of humor that can be misunderstood. He jokes about being heartless, but I think he’s far from that. He’s avoided killing anyone so far. He could have insisted on sending Zeynep back, but he listened to Alya. Now he’s planning her wedding and setting up a home for her. His response of "estağfurullah" tells me something about him. He helped save Mine’s daughter. (I commented on their relationship in an earlier post.) He can be a grouchy boss, but I think he truly cares about the people who work for him. He calls Muzzafer, Ihtiyar, out of respect.
Keep in mind we miss subtle things with the Spanish translations and horrible edits. Not to mention, we are cheated out of the music. BTW, I’m glad you are enjoying the music, K! Lol, the konak is made of stone so I don’t know if it will burn down. Just the contents or, heaven forbid, the people.
Hi, Susan. Inshallah - if Allah wills it. Ojalá originated from it. You can repeat it back or answer “ameen” (amen). Mashallah - Allah has willed it. Acknowledging something good while warding off the evil eye. If someone says it to you, you can say thank you.
Once Annoying Laura gets killed off eventually, it will be so refreshing. I do NOT like the character.
Kaya's trial started. Zerrin on the witness stand, as urged by her father, that Kaya attacked Sedet (her harasser) unprovoked. Sadakat called her a liar and caused enough of a scene that the courtroom went into a short recess. (Which was Sada's plan.) This gives Cihan, Erol and Musafir more time to find the motorcyclist witness. The witness had been kidnapped by Sedet's father. After beating up Demir, who was involved somehow, they found out where the motorcyclist witness was and got to him at the end of the Spanish episode. The witness agreed to help. Hurry! Get him to the courtroom! In all this, Demir had been beaten up in or near the hospital(?), and Alya found them. She immediately agreed to treat Demir as a patient and help hide what happened. Musafir jokingly said to Cihan that he should involve Ayla more as she is good at subterfuge. (Out of character for Alya to not make a big fuss bout the beatdown, but she knew the stakes.)
Also the wedding between Zeynep and her lover was set up, with the obligatory engagement meeting between the two families. Cihan scolded Zeynep's father into agreeing to it. As Cihan is going to provide the couple with a house, effectively money was involved also. Cihan and Alya will be the couple's witnesses. Deniz wants to go to the wedding as Zeynep has been playing with him. Cihan doesn't think that will be safe.
#31 part 1
Alya bristles at Nare’s observation that she’s interested in Cihan. She calls it ridiculous and calls Nare rude. We were forced to get married. And it’s Boran’s fault. ["Methinks she doth protest too much"]
Alya mentions the butterfly hair clip she found on Cihan’s desk. Turns out Cihan gifted it to Nare when they were kids. She shows Alya a photo. Cihan took it back when Nare said she didn’t like it. He kept it all these years.
Nare says that Zeyda never entered Cihan’s bedroom. Alya is the first woman to do so. He never slept with Zeyda. Alya chalks it up to Zeyda and Demir being in love. And she understands why Demir would hate Cihan so much.
Demir’s shipment arrives. Weapons and drugs. They were transported in Yonca Hospital trucks and hidden in medical equipment and supplies. [Guess they got away with it because border guards didn’t think contraband would be smuggled this way.]
Nare tells Alya how Zeyda almost killed Cihan. She didn’t do it at Demir’s bidding. Zeyda fell in love with Cihan. Cihan rejected her and Zeyda couldn’t accept it. Then she killed herself. Demir doesn’t know this. Nare knows this because Zeyda confided in her.
Erol tells Cihan that drugs and contraband entered the country from the port of Mersin. Rumor is they have arrived in Mardin. We don’t know who handled the shipment.
Muzzafer interrupts. Mine has come to see Cihan. Cihan is not happy to see her. She came because he wasn’t answering his phone. She apologizes for what she did. He tells her this isn’t the time or place to talk. Don’t make it worse, leave. We’ll talk later. She says she will wait. She’ll always wait for him.
Mine runs into Nare. Nare calls her out on giving Alya the Boran video. Mine asks her if you were Alya, would you want to be lied to? Nare considers this but adds, you wanted to split them up but you failed. They have become closer.
Nare enters Cihan’s office. She asks why Mine was there. He doesn’t answer that. Nare tells him that Alya is concerned about his behavior. Something is going on. Is this true? Cihan won’t say anything. He can’t tell her anything. All he says is that mom’s done unforgivable things but she’s also right about other things. And don’t tell Alya about this conversation.
#31 part 2
Deniz wants to go to Zeynep’s wedding. Alya tells him to ask Cihan Amca. She brings up their trip to NYC and Cansu. Deniz says he’d like to go there again and take Cihan with them. When the boy is asleep, she says uncle can’t come, he wouldn’t leave here and he’s not part of our world. You won’t grow up in this dark place. And we will free your uncle from this responsibility.
Cihan comes home early and Alya snarks, what no contraband to take care of? She tells him that Sahin and Zerrin are in bad shape. She thought Zerrin might change her statement.
Alya asks about meeting Zeynep’s family. Cihan says they are coming tomorrow, and they’ll set a wedding date. Why does she want to know? Well, she has to ask for time off. And Deniz is coming. He will ask to come. Cihan wonders if Alya is pressuring Deniz. They argue.
Cihan notices things on his desk were moved. He asks her about it. She denies it. She blames Nare for telling him. She won’t admit anything. He asks, what did you talk about with Nare? None of your business, she replies. It is my business if you go through my things, he answers.
Alya gets all worked up. She admits she was curious, so she took a look. She says she asked Nare about the hair clip. She accuses Cihan of overreacting. [lol.] She blurts, why didn’t you tell Demir that Zeyda fell in love with you? Because he suffered enough, he answers. That shuts her down and she leaves.
Erol calls Cihan. They ID’d the moto rider but he wasn’t at home. Mahmut’s men were spotted outside the house, and the kid disappeared. I hope they didn’t hurt the kid. [Mahmut is Sedat’s father.] They must find the kid, the camera, and the footage for the trial tomorrow.
Meeting of the families to plan Zeynep’s wedding. Alya is there too. Cihan lays down the rules. No punishments. Let the kids marry. If you oppose it, you’ll have to deal with me. And my wife Alya and I will be the witnesses at the wedding. Both families agree. Ha, Cihan shoos away the men who go to kiss his hand. Sada shows up in time to make a snide remark to Zeynep, you were going to pay dearly. You should thank Cihan.
Sada asks if Cihan’s got the evidence for Kaya’s trial. Not yet. Muzzafer gets a call from Erol—Mahmut is traveling on the farm road. Cihan and Muzzafer intercept Mahmut.
Mahmut asks, what’s wrong? You lost faith in Zerrin and came to beg? With the moto rider on my side, I don’t have to, Cihan replies, he’s the one you’re hiding. The one I’m taking to my brother’s hearing. How dare you, Mahmut answers. No hard feelings, Cihan says, patting something pinned to Mahmut’s jacket. [did Cihan place it there?] I’ll take the evidence to the judge. Mahmut looks concerned.
#31 part 3
Cihan leaves and Mahmut makes a frantic call to Demir. Do you still have the kid? I just met Cihan and I think he knows where he is. You need to check. [Yep, Cihan must have planted a bug on Mahmut, he’s listening to this convo.] Demir says it’s a lie. The kid isn’t stupid. He asked for his life in exchange for the video. He hid the camera but we’ll find it.
Cihan tells Muzzafer to pull over. He gives the phone to the car following him and tells them to follow Mahmut.
Time for Kaya to go to the courthouse.
Ecmel gives last minute instructions to Zerrin. Don’t protect Kaya.
Ozkan and Nare pass by Ecmel’s family inside the courthouse. Ozkan makes sure to show his affection for Nare in front of Sahin. Here comes Sada and her crew. It’s tense.
Nare asks to speak with her mother. She’s sorry she pointed a gun at her. [and we’re sorry she didn’t shoot.] Nare asks, what’s going on? Cihan is acting strange and won’t say why. What are you hiding? Sada shuts her down.
Kaya arrives at the court. He shakes his head at his mother and tells Zerrin not to cry.
Cihan and Muzzafer arrive at the hospital and catch Demir as he exits an elevator. Cihan pushes him back inside. Where’s the moto kid? Demir laughs in his face, your brother will rot in jail. Cihan beats Demir. Cihan’s phone rings and he hands it to Muzzafer to answer. It’s Erol. Where’s Cihan? The trial is about to begin.
Mahmut finds the bug that Cihan pinned on him.
Cihan promises to make the elevator a tomb for Demir if he doesn’t talk. Demir doesn’t care, he’s not talking. Mahmut calls Demir. Muzzafer takes the phone, hands it to Cihan, and keeps Demir silent.
It’s too late, Mahmut, Cihan says. Demir told me where the kid is. Mahmut gets in his car. Cihan’s men follow. They call Cihan. Cihan delivers a knockout punch to Demir. Oops, the elevator opens and there’s Alya. Did you kill him? Cihan says Demir hid evidence and he’ll explain the rest later. He tells Alya to find a room for Demir and examine him. They put him into a wheelchair and cover him up. Muzzafer says Alya ought to work with them. [Ha, a compliment.]
At the trial, the judge notes that Zerrin has made contradicting statements—verbal (not guilty) and written (guilty). Did Kaya Albora deliberately attack you and Sedat Nalhanoglu with a firearm? Which statement is true? She looks at Kaya, then addresses the judge. I already gave my statement. There’s nothing more to say. I guess she’s going with the written.
Sada jumps up. She’s lying! Fidan shouts at her to shut up. The judge calls for order but Sada continues, her first statement is the real one! She changed it. She’s working with Sedat. Erol doesn’t mind the outbursts. It gives them more time to get the evidence they need. The judge orders Sada and Fidan removed from the courtroom. He orders a 30 min recess.
Erol calls Cihan. Zerrin changed her statement. I’ll try to get her questioned again, but you need to find that kid. Your mother caused a scene and we have a 30 min recess but if you don’t get here, you’ll need a lawyer to get your mother out of jail.
Mahmut has led them to the moto kid’s hiding place. The kid is scared but okay. He’ll take them to the camera.
Trial has resumed and Erol makes his case to question Zerrin. She was coerced to change her statement. Muzzafer shows up with the evidence. Will it be enough?
And we are out.
Anastasia and Dondi – thank you both for this wonderful recap. Did you two tag team?
I wonder how they IDed the motorcyclist given that he was wearing a helmet. Maybe his motorcycle had a license plate?
Oh no, Mine! “I will always wait for you.” What do you want with a man who just glares at you?
Dondi – I so much enjoyed your observations about Cihan. I’m curious to see if you and the patio are taking his depiction the way I am. I do love me a complex character, but what I’m perceiving is that he is being portrayed as the ideal man. I’m thinking the writers don’t think he has any flaws. He’s a good man, no doubt, with the noble intention of trying to keep all these red-hot embers that are our characters from bursting into a conflagration. He is far-seeing and wise while others are myopic, seeing just their own heartbreak or their greed or their thirst for power and revenge.
That’s all great. What’s not great is his imperiousness which I think is there to show his quiet power and superiority. Also, having tons of money helps. His constant shushing of women and ordering them about. His lack of communication. Yes, he has to keep secrets about his machinations to keep war from breaking out, but he could communicate his feelings and thoughts about personal things. He could actually hold conversations with the people around him. Not communicating with others seems to be presented as a virtue here - he’s very much the strong silent type. Tip for Alya: when selecting a husband strong = good, silent = definitely not good. (I’ve thought the actors must like the script because there’s so little dialog to learn.)
Then there’s his treatment of Mine. If he was really good-hearted he would break it off with her for her own good. Just saying “I’ll never marry you” is not enough. The very least he could do is show her a bit of kindness. She’s starting to act nutsy and this is not going to turn out well.
I do like the Mine actress. She’s good at looking doe-eyed and melting, but now she’s using the same big eyes to throw some very calculating looks.
Thanks, Anastasia. That was a very good quickie. There are two days in the week where we don't have firm volunteers: Monday and Thursday. That's why I put up a hopeful comment soon after the page appeared online. I appreciate recaps of any length.
And, dondi, this is not your first Monday effort when we might have had no recap. As always, excellent writing and insightful words about the characters and their motivations.
Ha! I was all primed for a big reveal about the butterfly hair clip, and it was a gift to his sister!
Thanks, dondi, for clarifying that the truck full of contraband was a hospital truck and, I assume, delivered into and unloaded from said hospital parking lot. BTW, Demir caressing the nasty looking long gun...eww. The guy is definitely a sociopath.
I enjoyed Nare getting in Mine's face. I guess I'm just following the writers' wishes...she's an obsessive, calculating woman. And the fact that her daughter prefers to live with her father also says a lot.
I get a touch of Maggie's annoyance when Cihan issues orders, say, to Nare. But I usually think he's a product of his culture. We all are. I thought Cihan memorizing everything on his desk and getting huffy when something was moved was pretty OCD.
Hmmm. Alya telling Deniz about New York may be what upsets her apple cart.
Grrrr. I wish Nare had jerked her hand away from Ozkan when he paraded her past Sahin and IIRC, kissed her on the cheek.
I assume the manila envelope Muzzafer brought has a USB with the motorcyclist's video of how Sedet was the aggressor. What's wrong with these people. Why does Mahmut bear such a grudge that he wants the evidence suppressed?
I laughed at your aside, dondi. "and we're sorry she didn't shoot" regarding the Friday cliffhanger with Nare pointing a gun at her mother.
Besides Cihan not communicating well, and Alya getting upset too easily, the dizi dialogue is simplified because they know it will be translated into other languages. The programs are sold to other countries.
For more complicated Spanish, we can watch the Mexican, Colombian and US-produced telenovelas. Such as "Dinastias Casillas" and those on Univision.
Lejos de Ti – Uzak Sehir – Far Away
Episode 32 #1
La Hora de la Verdad – The Hour of the Truth
Outside a warehouse:
Cihan and Muzaffer arrive at this remote location to find Mahmut Aga Nalhanoglu (same last name as Sedat) standing with several men with drawn pistols pointing at him.
One of Cihan’s henchies: He wouldn’t give it to us.
Cihan asks Mahmut if he had gotten rid of it. He then asks his men if they really need it.
Muzaffer: No, Cihan, of course not.
He goes over to the warehouse corrugated door and is able to break open the lock. (“It” must have been the key.) He and Cihan enter the warehouse. Cihan asks the other henchie if he’s ok, he replies that he was a little scared but that he’s OK.
Cihan: Is the camera near here?
Henchie: Yes. I’ll take you to where it is.
Cihan has Muzaffer take the man to the camera while he interrogates Mahmut.
Cihan: You thought you were clever didn’t you? (No answer.) Say hi to Curmi for me, Ecmel as well. And anyone else involved, give them my regards. See you Mahmut.
At the courthouse:
Kaya’s hearing is underway.
Erol: Your Honor, the witness Zerrin Albora has given contradictory statements. Taking into account the existing hostility of her father toward the accused and her behavior in court, it’s evident that the written statement that was presented was taken under coercion and does not reflect the truth. That is why we request that she be questioned again. As such, her testimony ought not to be considered in your ruling.
There is a door knock and Muzaffer [I think of him as the magician] enters. He brings an envelope, perhaps with the pictures they wanted.
Erol: Excuse me, Your Honor, may I have a short break? We might have obtained some crucial evidence in the case.
Muzaffer opens the envelope to find a cell phone.
Kaya, Zerrin, and Sedat look at each other.
Erol: Your Honor, while the trial continues, we’d like to present new evidence that I believe will be key to your ruling. If I may, I’d like to show it to you.
He gives it to an officer of the court who takes it to the judge.
Erol: This video recording was sent to us by Cihan Albora and shows Sedat Nalhanoglu shooting at Zerrin Albora with a firearm and then pointing said firearm at Kaya (and Zerrin) Albora. As I mentioned, I believe this evidence can change your ruling in this case.
Sedat now has a frowny face.
The judge: That’s right. This changes everything.
Sadakat gloats: My son is saved. Did you really think you’d ruin my family? (She directs this to Fidan and family.)
Hasan tries to stop her outburst.
Sadakat: What a relief! It’s a miracle.
Kaya looks over where Halis is sitting in front of Sahin, Zerrin and family.
In the hospital:
Ecmel sits up in bed after hearing Mahmut called.
Ecmel: What did you say, Mahmut? How did he find the kid? (He listens some more.) Fine, fine. Hangs up.
Ecmel: They’re all idiots.
Meanwhile, Mine brings hospital security to the room where Demir is locked up.
Demir: Dammit, I was beaten. What the hell were you doing? Listen, Mine, the hospital has a serious security problem. We have to find a solution immediately.
Demir stomps off.

Episode 32 #2
Back at the courthouse:
Hasan: You see, sister, I told you everything would be fine.
Halis: Cihan did a great job. He’s just like his father.
Ozkan and Nare are walking out of the court, and Ozkan says it looks like everything turned out OK.
Nare asks: Were you really worried about Kaya?
Ozkan replies just as Sahin and Zerrin walk up: No, but I detest Sahin.
Ozkan grabs Nare’s hand. Nare and Sahin are busy looking at one another. Fidan takes her children (Sahin and Zerrin) by the hand and they leave.
Back at the Albora Konak:
Muzaffer and Kadir bring Kaya home. Cihan, Alya, and Deniz are waiting, and Deniz runs to his beloved Uncle Kaya. Nare joins the hug. Deniz then goes to hug Kadir, telling him he also missed him. The two hug. Then Cihan reaches out for Kaya, calling him the Unbreakable Albora. They also hug. Then it’s Alya’s turn to welcome him. Cihan checks to be sure Kadir is OK. Ummu hugs Kaya along with Kadir. Kadir says they should go inside, and Pakize tells him: Welcome back, Kadir.
Kadir has a little smile at this: Thank you, Pakize.
Pakize: Don’t smile at me! My father asked me to drop the charges. I didn’t do it for you.
No more smile on Kadir’s face.
The mood is suddenly less joyful.
Sadakat comes running: Kaya!
She hugs her son, telling him how much she missed him and how she suffered: I was so worried.
Kaya: Why did you do that to my uncle, Mom?
The mood continues to worsen. Alya asks Pakize to take Deniz to his room.
Cihan tells Muzaffer and Co. to go drink coffee. He suggests that Kadir might want to play the games he surely missed. This cleared most of the people out, leaving Sadakat, Kaya, Alya, and Cihan.
Sadakat to Kaya: Don’t act as if you don’t know. They tried to ruin your life. They wanted you to die. And, Zerrin, your obsession, betrayed you. If not for your brother, you’d still be in prison.
Kaya: She had no choice.
Sadakat: You think so? Would you have done nothing in my place? Would you not have avenged me? Impossible. You’re obsessed with that dam woman. She doesn’t love you. She betrayed you, son.
Kaya: No. They act like this because of the war you started. You attacked them first. That’s why they want revenge.
Cihan tries to calm Kaya down, but he refuses to.
Kaya: You think I’m wrong?
Cihan: I told you to stop.
Kaya: Why are you yelling at me? Am I wrong? Am I lying?
Cihan tells Sadakat to go inside.
Kaya: Everything I’m saying is true. Why are you defending her? Why’d she do it?
Cihan: Mom despises Uncle Ecmel. That’s why she did it.
Kaya: They despise us, too, and with good reason. Is that not true?
Nare: Kaya, it might’ve been for the best.
Kaya: What are you talking about, Nare? What’s going on with all of you?
Nare: They made a decision and chose their families. This fight isn’t over. Like you, I was opposed for a long time. I suffered, and you know I’m still suffering. But there’s no end to this, Kaya. Give up.
Kaya: I will not give up. I’m not like you, Nare. I don’t understand you two.
Kaya walks away.

Episode 32 #3
In his room, Kaya paces around. He sees the cell phone. He is very tempted to call Zerrin.
Zerrin is with her mother and Sahin when the call comes through. Sahin answers it: Don’t call again Kaya!
Kaya makes a pained expression and lowers his phone. He thinks out loud: No, I don’t believe this!
Back at Ecmel’s, Fidan hollers about Kaya having no shame. Why is he calling? Sahin reassures her that he won’t call again.
Fidan: It’s very easy for him. They entrapped your father, he (Kaya) gets out of jail, and now he’s free as a bird. And Ecmel once again paid the price. He’s going back to jail and he’ll be ruined. Is that fair to you? (No answer.) Sahin, answer me, is that fair?
Sahin: You’re right, Mom, but calm down.
Fidan: Don’t ask me to because I can’t. I swear they won’t let your father live in peace.
In the hospital, Ecmel is talking to Demir, who has lots of facial wounds from his fight.
Emel: This turned out very badly.
Demir: As you can tell, I had nothing to do with it. Every ounce of me resisted. I never would have imagine they’d find the kid. This is all due to Mahmut’s stupidity.
Ecmel: Idiot!
Demir: Ayyy.
Ecmel: When am I being discharged, Demir?
Demikr: Not yet. I got them to extend your stay for a day, but that’s the best I can do, Ecmel.
Ecmel: You have to help me escape the hospital.
Demir: Did you speak with Sahin? Will he help us?
Ecmel: We didn’t talk, but of course he will.
Demir: And if he refuses?
Ecme: That will never happen.,
Demior: I don’t even trust my own father. How can you assure me everything will go off without a hitch?
Ecmel: Of course it will. Don’t worry.
Demir: Congratulations, you have a very reliable son. You’re luckier than my father with me.
Emel: I can assure you that tomorrow I’ll be out of here.
Demir: Alright, I have everything under control, so don’t worry.
At the Albora Konak, Alya is heating milk in the kitchen. Cihan enters and asks what she is doing. She says Deniz can’t sleep, so she hopes this works.
Cihan hopes he likes it.
Alya: I don’t know what you’re hiding, Cihan, but I think as long as it continues, Kaya won’t be at ease. Just saying.
Cihan: I think we shouldn’t bring it up. Kaya just got out of jail. I really am happy about it, so leave me alone. I’d like to enjoy it even if just for a moment.
Alya: And thanks to you. Kaya is very lucky to have a brother like you.
Cihan: Do you think you’re unlucky to have a husband like me? (He looks a little flirty here.)
Alya: Not like you’re that lucky either.
Cihan: Why? (Smiling.)
Alya: Well, you married a woman because your brother asked you to. Now that’s having bad luck. [Spanish language music here, Aaaaargh!]
Cihan: Did you get permission to go to the wedding?
Alya: Yes.
Cihan: Great, then we’ll leave early tomorrow.
Alya: Deniz is coming with me.
(This is mood breaker!). Cihan yells: We’ve talked about this and I said he’s not going!
Alya: You’re wrong. He’s coming. There’s no way I’m going anywhere without my son. And it’s not up for discussion.

Episode 32 #4
Cihan: You leave him alone when you work the night shift.
Alya: What! What’s that got to do with it?
Cihan: Of course it’s relevant!
Alya: Of course not. You’re going to start bothering me about my job now?
Cihan: I’m not trying to, but my point is very clear. I can’t guarantee his safety there and there’ll be many people there. It’s very dangerous.
Alya: Reinforce the security. Deniz wants to go.
Cihan: Well, he’s not coming with us.
Alya: He will.
Cihan: Don’t push it, Alya.
Alya: Cihan, please.
Dihan: I don’t get why you’re so insistent about this. What if something happens?
Alya: Don’t worry, nothing will.
Cihan: You really think so. If you want him to go so bad, fine.
Alya: He wants to go.
Cihan: Fine, he can.
The door opens rapidly, and here is Sadakat! She must have been listening!
Sadakat: My grandson cannot go anywhere. (Slams door.) He cannot go anywhere.
Alya: Oh no (making a wry face).
Cihan: Is the milk ready?
Alya: Yes.
Cihan: Great, take it to him so he can get some sleep, now before it gets cold.
Sadakat is looking daggers.
Alya bids Cihan good night, and he hopes she can get some rest. She rolls her eyes toward Sadakat from the door.
Sadakat: Have you lost your mind, Cihan? You know how I feel about this. My grandson is not going to that wedding. He takes one step outside this mansion and my heart will stop.
Cihan: I know, Mom. I’m aware. Don’t worry, I’ll reinforce security, OK?
Sadakat: That woman has become your Achilles heel, Cihan.
They stare at one another.
Sadakat: She’ll turn your world upside down.
After she leaves, he is very thoughtful. His pleasant, slightly flirty encounter, went south very fast. Too bad!
In her room, Alya puts the code in her room safe. She hears Cihan and quickly shuts the door to the safe.
Cihan: Did Deniz fall asleep?
Alya: He did. What did your mother say? Is everything OK? Deniz will come?
Cihan: Uh huh.
Alya: That’s good. He’s very happy. We can’t let him down.
Cihan: Have a good night.
Alya: Get some rest.
After he leaves, she gets into the safe again and takes out the passports.
He leans on the back of his couch, looking at her room. He senses that she is up to something.
Alya takes photos of the pages of the passport and gets her credit card out to buy tickets. She gets a notice that the transaction went through. She looks back at Cihan’s room as she finishes this. She seems conflicted.
Meanwhile, Cihan is still looking at her door, thinking.
Alya thinks while she is putting passports into a case that she puts in her closet (perhaps back in the safe, but we didn’t hear the sound of the safe). She keeps looking at his door.
Next morning we hear a rooster crow. She opens her safe and removes the passports and puts them in her bag. She keeps hesitating, but then looks around, perhaps for a last look. She looks sad, especially when she sees the green chair. She is sighing, when Cihan enters. She still looks around as if it’s the last time she will be there. Cihan senses things, and this should really give him pause. He looks very sad.
Alya and Deniz come out and Nare and Kaya greet them. Deniz tells Kaya that they will fly kites together when he gets back.
Sadakat shows up. Alya tells them she will see them soon, all the while knowing that she won’t.

Episode 32 #5
The servants also say goodbye. Alya is highly affected, and Cihan, knowing she’s up to something, is watching her very closely. She looks back at the family on the balcony. Cihan is staring at her very seriously. He joins them and Kadir drives. Muzaffer is also with them. Cihan stares at Alya.
They reach Diyarbakir where the wedding will take place. There are kids playing. The three of them sit at a table. There are three guards. Cihan tells Muzaffer and Kadir to join them. Kadir sits, but Muzaffer tells him to get up.
Kadir: But Cihan told me to sit.
Muzaffer tells him he can’t keep watch while eating. Get up and work. Cihan tells Kadir to get up but to take some food.
Kadir stuffs food in his mouth, making Muzaffer angry: Don’t speak with your mouth full or I’ll smack you!
Kadir, with his mouth full, asks what’s wrong with it?
Kadir: Here comes the couple. Clap for them. Zeynep comes up to Deniz, smiling.
Dilaver invites Alya and Cihan to come over with them for the ceremony. They leave Deniz with Kadir.
Zeynep and Cemal make their vows. Zeynep smiles at Alya and Cihan when she accepts the marriage. After, they congratulate the happy couple. Cemal thanks Cihan for buying them a furnished house and money for their baby. Alya looks at Cihan, and he looks bashful.
Cemal: You have a large heart; may life repay you. May you and your family have a wonderful life. Cihan finally says that’s enough. He gives Alya a box with a gold necklace to put on Zeynep.
There’s a loud sound that startles Alya, but it’s just the big drum (davul) starting up, soon to be joined by the zurna, a sort of wind instrument. They join the festivities and Alya is encouraged to dance. They stand in a line holding pinkies and shaking their shoulders. [I’m touched thinking of how many years back this traditional dance has probably been done.]
Deniz joins them on Cihan’s shoulders. Cihan tells her he will be back and takes Deniz. She watches them together; they love one another so much. Deniz is really getting into it. Afterward, they enter their hotel room and put Deniz to bed. He’s already asleep. Cihan looks at Alya and smiles his little Alya smile. She thanks him for letting Deniz come. She told him how happy Deniz was. Cihan asks if she is also happy. Of course, she replies. Seeing Zeynep like that brightened my day. Knowing that she will have her child and raise it alongside the man she loves makes me happy. Thank you, Cihan.
Cihan: Maybe you’ll be the one who brings her baby into the world.
Alya: Maybe.
Cihan leaves, bidding her good evening.
Cihan goes back to the festivities. They ask Cihan to sing a song with his beautiful voice. He agrees reluctantly and gets Muzaffer to join him with two guitar-like instruments, baglama (saz).
Cihan decides to sing “You Left in the Darkness,’ which sounds very appropriate for what Alya is up to. Kadir and Alya watch from the balcony. Alya had no idea that Cihan was musical. Kadir says he knows how to play every instrument, taught by Muzaffer. [I’m so thrilled we get the Turkish version!] Alya is listening to the words, very impactada. Cihan looks very sad. Alya looks sadly back at her hotel room. Then she goes to Deniz and tries to wake him. She puts his coat on. She takes Deniz and sneaks out of the room. Kadir tells Cihan they have left. Cihan is muy impactado.

Episode 32 #6
FLASHBACK: Alya is telling Deniz about their friend from New York, Cansu. Deniz remembers. Cihan is listening to this! Did you like it there? New York. Yes, I liked it very much, Mama. Do you want to go again? Yes. But can Uncle Cihan come with us? Your uncle can’t come this time. He can’t because he’s not part of our life. We have to let him go. He has to be free.
Back at the party, everyone thanks Cihan for playing and singing. At the airport, Alya carries Deniz from the taxi. Meanwhile, Kadir is following them. Kadir, Cihan, and Muzaffer put on their overcoats and follow.
Deniz is awake enough to walk with her. She gets in the passport line. Cihan sees her. Muzaffer tells him if they don’t go now, she will get through passport control, and they won’t be able to join her. She is having trouble going because she wants to go and she wants to stay. The passport guy calls her to come up. She is very conflicted. Cihan watches her, hoping she’ll turn back.

End of episode 32.
Youtube has a couple of videos of Ozan Akbaba (Cihan) singing.
Diyarbarkir is an hour north of Mardin, and has a population of over a million people. It's Kurdish. (Our characters are possibly Kurdish and Wiki says polygamy occasionally happens although not sanctioned by the government. Just sayin'.) Alya knew there would be an airport there. Interesting to watch her decide to go or stay, and Cihan, at least for now, letting her decide.

Babachita, thanks for a wonderful recap of a pivotal episode. You don’t miss a thing. I’m very happy that there were no edits to this ep, especially in the wedding scenes.
Cihan said (don’t remember who he said it to, maybe Nare) if Alya tries to leave again he wouldn’t stop her. Now he’s letting her make a choice.
The türkü Cihan purposely chose to sing is Akşam Olur Karanlığa Kalırsın/When Evening Comes, You’ll be Left in the Dark.
As evening falls, you are left in darkness,
You sink into deep, deep love
Oh bride, bride, beloved bride, you have killed me
You leave me and go to foreign lands,
Isn't this cruelty for you and death for me?
Oh bride, bride, beloved bride, you have killed me
Nightingale, why do you sing, do you have no nest?
Or is your suffering as great as mine?
Oh bride, bride, beloved bride, you have killed me
If I had a gold necklace made for my beloved's neck,
By God, beautiful women have many enemies
Oh bride, bride, beloved bride, you have killed me
Her room is dusty, her cupboard is smoky,
Wake up, my coal-eyed one, wake up from your sleep
Oh bride, bride, beloved bride, you have killed me
When your hands touch mine
Whether it's death or separation
Oh bride, bride, beloved bride, you have killed me
I already (re)watched the YouTube clip of Cihan singing at the wedding, Anastasia. And I often wonder if the characters in these “aşiret” dizis are Kurdish. They will never say it outright.
I can’t wait to see what happens tonight. I think you’ll have a very interesting episode to recap, novelera!
Thank you Anastasia and Dondi for all the information. I will look up Cihan on YouTube. The lyrics you provided are so sad, Dondi. I don’t know how he can sing that without breaking down.
It was quite an episode. Once we find out he overheard her, it makes more sense.
Can’t wait for tonight!
Babachita
Babachita, this is wonderful! Huge thanks for all the detail.
I really enjoyed this episode. The wedding was wonderful to see, and we even got Cihan singing a song. Alya looked so wistful that I thought the lyrics must mean something important and I was thrilled, Dondi, that you supplied them for us. Thank goodness they didn’t put some awful Spanish song over his singing. (I really hate that song. It comes gushing at us way too loud. I guess it’s supposed to give us Big Emotions but the big emotion I get is being mad about it and wishing they’d turn it off.)
I also liked the peek into the kitchen, which, like the rest of the konak, is amazing. I just can’t get over the beautiful architecture. Say, did you notice in the drone view of our town that somebody painted their house pink? It sticks out like a sore thumb. I wonder what the neighbors think of it.
Ayla looked great in her travel outfit but I was worried about her carrying not-small Deniz through the airport on her very thin high heels. Great way to break an ankle if you slip.
I liked that Cihan didn’t try to stop Alya. She’s going to have to decide for herself. I bet she decides to stay. I’m thinking though that that blood feud is never going to end and that when Deniz reaches his majority he’ll have to deal with the same things Cihan is dealing with.
Anastasia – back to the language question. I’m thinking both the dizis and the TNs are made for the masses and so are unlikely to have literary language. Both are exported all over the world.
It’s not the quality of the dialog in our show, it’s the small amount of it. I was watching Monteverde last night (a really fun TN!) and paying attention to how much dialog there was. It’s practically nothing but dialog from start to finish. All the characters expound on what they’re thinking and feeling – at great length!
In our show, the men are cryptic, except maybe Ecmel. Or Demir. As for the women, the young ones have been cowed into silence, all except Alya. It’s Sadakat’s personality to not say much and only Fidan really expresses herself at length, but nobody pays her much attention.
Another thought: In the Spanish-language TNs they use the exact same dialog lines from show to show, particularly when they’re talking about amor, which they do a lot. Sometimes we can say the line before the actor does as we know it’s coming up. All this repetition makes the TNs brilliant for language learning.
I think at the Televisa school for acting they must have one whole unit on the various ways to say “¿Que haces aqui?” Ha!
Thanks so much, Babachita, for another terrific recap. You helped me with describing the "it" Cihan and Muzaffer were talking about while the guns were on Mahmut. I thought they were saying 'he" when they said he must have disposed of it. Meaning they'd killed the motorcycle rider.
I also was wondering how Kadir was released since his crime was not the same as Kaya's. But your recap explained that she'd withdrawn the charges.
Loved the dance. The whole wedding was enjoyable. Best of all...no Sadakat!
We saw a typical dizi development. Often, in the ones I've seen, we're led to believe a certain thing is going to happen. In this case Alya being able to get away to the airport while the party is still going on. And then we see a flashback. In this case we're shown that Cihan knew of Alya's plans.
I'm convinced she'll stay. There couldn't be a dizi if she were in New York and Cihan in Turkey. We saw a number of instances of everyone's deep love for Deniz. The child is happy in this family. She must realize he'd be very unhappy with living in New York and losing all those aunties and uncles.
