#47 part 1
Gulgun and Orhan try to talk Kazim into coming to the New Year's dinner. He refuses. He asks, aren’t you listening to me? Don’t you understand? Even the sofa I sit on is uncomfortable. I have to stand. I was very offended. Allah knows how offended I was. You’re absolutely right, Kazim Bey, Orhan replies, you told us so yesterday and we heard you. Seyran and Ferit are trying their best to fix things. As adults, we should support them. Don’t you think it’s for the best?
Gulgun adds, what family marries their children with the intention of separating them? Orhan and I came to ask for Seyran’s hand. Halis aga wasn’t even with us. Maybe you lost faith in Ferit, but have faith in us. Gulgun makes a plea to Esme to say something.
Yes, say something, Kazim mocks Esme, I want to know what you think. Esme stutters…uh… Seyran wanted to come here herself… but of course, they’re together now. Gulgun smiles. But Esme isn’t sure. Kazim says, this is the situation. Children are one thing, but Halis Ağa is another. Words… deeds. He humiliates us. Gulgun and Orhan look discouraged.
The doorbell rings. Hattuc and Suna have returned. Orhan stands up. We’ll go then, Kazim Bey, you can discuss the situation with Hattuc Hanim. We will be waiting for your answer. Hattuc speaks up, don’t worry, we’ll be there. Kazim objects. I said we were weren’t going. Why did you say yes? Because we have to go, Hattuc snaps. Even Halis Aga agreed to go so we can resolve this problem.
Gulgun asks, he agreed to go? Not in so many words, Hattuc replies, but I know he’ll be there. Gulgun and Orhan are pleasantly surprised. Orhan says, honestly, I don’t even know my own father as well as you do. Hattuc answers, they say you’re the same at 7 as at 70. We’ve known each other for a long time. Don’t worry. Notice Kazim’s look of surprise here. Orhan holds out his hand to Kazim. Kazim reluctantly shakes.
Kazim walks out on the terrace. He complains, Oh my God. This is unbelievable. Hattuc joins him and asks him to listen. What’s there to listen to, he asks, how dare you walk all over me like that? I kept quiet because you raised me and I respect you but this doesn’t suit you at all. Hattuc explains, Halis Aga will come this evening and apologize. Kazim is skeptical. You’ll wait a long time for that. If he meant it, he’d come here and apologize.
Don’t drive me crazy, Hattuc says, don’t you want to fix this problem? Kazim asks, you think this will end? She replies, what do you think they’ll say in Antep if they hear Halis Aga kicked you out? What will they say as you walk down the street? A normal separation would be different. If your daughter wants a divorce, there’s nothing we can do about it. Until then, we have to try.
Kazim tells Hattuc she can go, he’ll stay home. He asks, didn’t you tell me you were going to pick up Seyran’s clothes? Ifakat didn’t let me, she replies, everyone else is being responsible and doing their part to resolve this problem. Stop being so stubborn. Kazim asks, what did Halis Aga say to you? You were so dead set on leaving but he changed your mind. She doesn’t answer the question. Esme, Suna and I are going shopping, she tells him. Take this time to reflect on this. Think. You’ll agree this is the right thing to do.
#47 part 2
Preparations are already underway at the mountain house when Seyfer return. Who are these people, Seyran asks. We need help getting the house ready, Ferit replies. She asks, isn’t it a bit much? He reminds her they made a promise. A worker gives an update, the lights are up, the food is ready and the tree just arrived. Great, Ferit says, I left some things in the back of the car. They’re ornaments that Seyran Hanim personally chose. She will put them where she wants.
After you, Ferit says. And Seyran enters the house first. Wow. Everything is decorated beautifully. The table is being set. And there’s the tree. Seyran is overcome with emotion. That tree… as a kid, it’s how I dreamed it would look. Thank you. There’s more, Ferit tells her, they are bringing the ornaments you picked. Once you decorate it, it will be just like you dreamed.
Seyran says, I wish my mom and Suna were here. I want them to enjoy this, too. I want to share this with them. And you will, Ferit replies, they will be here. Don’t you think your husband, who organized everything so perfectly, will also bring your mother and sister? She answers, I think to myself, “what’s next.”
Kazim is suffering alone at home. The ladies return from shopping. Hattuc is wearing a very nice pink suit and has her hair up. He takes one look and starts in, what’s going on? Are we going to a wedding… all pink like this? Did you forget to tell me someone was getting married? Stop complaining, Hattuc orders, the car is waiting for us downstairs. Oh my God, I repent, Kazim replies, let me say, “O messenger of Allah, I will not come”! I don’t care if a car is waiting. You go. I’ll let you go.
Hattuc asks, you’re going to let us, as women, go alone? As if you respected my decision as a man, Kazim answers. I might as well be another woman in this family. You treat me like a horse and climbed on top just like that. Go at a gallop. (He makes the sound.) She reminds him, remember what you always say, and especially, what you sacrificed. All the money you spent on the girls. Everything you invested in educating them. Are you going to let an old grump having a bad day make you abandon what you want?
Looks like Kazim is considering this. Hattuc continues, don’t leave me alone because I need your support to even be at this dinner. Kazim says, you know full well that if that old grump had any shame, he’d come here and apologize and even then, I wouldn’t go. Do you want me to bring that ratty old hag, Esme?
You act like they don’t see Esme when they come to the house, Hattuc says. Oh, and speaking of which, I have a surprise for you. Kazim perks up. What surprise? Is this a joke? Hattuc gives a big smile, come with me. She calls Esme.
Esme appears at the top of the stairs and slowly makes her way down. Kazim is disappointed at first. He asks, Esme is the surprise? But Esme’s had a complete makeover. Kazim’s mouth drops open. Wow. With the look of a çapkın, he asks, Auntie, who is that woman? He winks at Esme. Look at me, what color is this lipstick? Wow, mashallah. He winks at her again.
The Korhans head to their cars. Halis watches from his window. Ifakat turns and looks up at him. Halis leaves the window. The staff gets into their cars.
Final preps at the mountain house. Ferit takes a quick look around inside and heads outside. He turns on the lights. It’s beautiful.
#47 part 3
It’s showtime. Ferit waits out front in formal dress. Seyran, dressed in a red strapless gown, comes out to join him. [Afra is so beautiful.] Wow, wow, wow, wow, Ferit says. Thank you, Seyran replies. He tells her she looks beautiful. Did that really come out of your mouth, she jokes, did you say something nice to me? Think of it as a New Year’s gift, he answers. Seyran looks at all the lights thinks they’re beautiful.
Cars arrive at the mountain house. Seyran takes Ferit’s arm. She’s nervous and asks, do you think your grandfather will be upset when he sees me? if that were so, he wouldn’t be coming, he replies. Ifakat, Gulgun and Orhan are the first to walk up. Hoşgeldiniz. Hoşbuluk. Ferit asks, where’s grandpa? Ifakat says she couldn’t convince him to come.
Ferit is very disappointed. He’s not coming? Seyran puts her hand on his shoulder. I didn’t want to spoil your mood, Ifakat says, I had hopes until the very end but he wasn’t convinced. Don’t be sad, Gulgun says, if he doesn’t soften today, he will tomorrow. Orhan says that Hattuc agreed to come but he doesn’t know if Kazim will. Everything will be fixed but maybe not tonight. Orhan tells Ferit he did well.
Seyran tries to comfort Ferit. Don’t worry, you did the best you could. Remember what you said… at least we’ll have a nice, big farewell dinner. Fuat and Asuman walk up and the yali staff follow. Did you notice Ferit and Fuat shook hands but Ferit and Abidin shared a hearty hug. Ha, Dicle and the Camel [Yusuf] walked up side by side. She took his arm after she slightly stumbled. Did she do that on purpose? As Yusuf passes, Ferit quietly says, welcome Camel Bey.
The Sanlis arrive. Kazim gets out first. He holds his hand out for a surprised Esme! She takes it. Suna follows and helps Hattuc. Ferit complements Esme and gives her hand a kiss [not the traditional one.] Ferit kisses Kazim’s hand. Welcome Kazim baba. Kazim grumbles an answer, and he pats Ferit on the arm. Seyran kisses her father’s hand. Hattuc’s hand is kissed. Ferit welcomes Suna but she goes straight to Seyran. Ferit holds up his hand, like what was that?
That’s it for the guests. Seyran says let’s go inside. Ferit sighs, Ah grandpa. Ah, grandpa, ah. Dinner is served. Everyone is having a good time, except for Ferit. He keeps his eyes on the door and looks so sad. Kazim shakes his head and turns to his aunt. Ah, Hatice Hanim, the great Hatice Hatun. All you can do is stare at the door. Is this enough of a response for you tonight? Hattuc sighs.
Orhan gets up to speak. Welcome everyone. I’m so happy to be with you all this evening. Of course, I would have preferred my father to make this speech. But since he’s not here, I would like to ask Ferit—who brought us all together and put in a tremendous amount of effort to prepare this place for us—to say a few words.
Okay, Ferit says. As he rises from his seat, there is a knock at the door. Halis Ağa has arrived, followed by Latif. Everyone stands. Ferit rushes over to grandpa. Hoşgeldin, Dede, he smiles. Halis smiles back, hoşbulduk. Ferit kisses his hand and they hug.
Seyran approaches Halis with her head down—hoşgeldin, efendim. Everyone waits for his reaction. Halis holds out his hand for Seyran to kiss.
#47 part 4
Halis takes his place at the head of the table. He asks everyone to sit. Hattuc looks up at him and smiles. Halis starts, it’s so nice to see our whole family together like this. All of you, whether related to us by blood or not, are so precious to me. I couldn’t bear the thought of leaving you alone, or rather, of being alone without you. Today is a special day. Sometimes I get very angry, hurting your feelings. Frown from Kazim.
I know that when you reach this age, Halis says, you learn how short life is, and that mending a heart is harder than breaking one. But sometimes we succumb to our desires. In this short life, if you have any grievances against me, or against each other, please forgive (haklarinizi helal et). [This has significant cultural and religious meaning. Look up “hakkini helal et” if you want more information. We also mentioned in a recent KPA post.]
Halis continues, since we’ve gathered here tonight, let’s all wipe the slate clean and enter the new year with new hopes and clear consciences. Hattuc is a bit emotional. Ferit is beaming. Halis turns to Kazim. I got angry and snapped at you. You’re upset and hurt and rightly so. Anyone would be. But a broken heart is a sign that there is still love and mercy within it. He directly asks Kazim—hakkini helal et. Don’t let my presence harden your heart. I said so many things to you, and you didn’t say a single word in front of me. Thank you, and I apologize.
Now it’s up to Kazim. He sits, staring down. Hattuc pokes him on the thigh. Kazim gets up, approaches Halis and says, estağfurullah. He kisses Halis’ hand and keeps his gaze down. Well, look at me, Halis says, and he opens his arms wide. On a day like this, you can’t hold grudges. They hug. Everyone applauds. Kazim kisses Halis’ hand again.
Halis says, afiyet olsun and they continue the meal. Ferit looks around. Everyone is having a good time. Seyfer look at each other. Ferit winks at her. He holds his hand out on her lap, under the table. She takes it. They smile at each other. This was the end of Turkish episode 15.
The staff returns to the yali ahead of the family. Sultan has celebrated a little too much and she stumbles as she gets out of the car. Mustafa catches her and Sefika and Dicle grab hold of her. Sefika says they have to get ready for the family’s return. They might need something before bed. Dicle says her mother isn’t well and should lie down. Sefika worries, what if Ifakat Hanim needs Sultan? Sultan is dizzy. Sefika says she’ll make her coffee.
Seyfer, Suna and Abidin arrive home. Ferit helps Seyro out of the car. [Ferit speaks English here—"be careful princess” and they dubbed it into Spanish!] The four enter the yali and it’s time to say goodnight.
Seyran remembers her bet with Ferit and she panics. Abla, would you mind coming upstairs to talk? Ferit looks at his wife. Suna answers, uh…I’m tired and I want to get some water. Seyran makes pleading faces at her sister and Ferit catches her. He says, kariciğim, I’m not falling for these games. You lost the bet. Seyro asks, what bet? Ferit replies, you forgot? That’s enough. Remember what would happen if the family made up? He whispers in her ear to remind her.
#47 part 5
Seyran pushes Ferit away. Stop it! I only said that because it thought it was a joke! You’re unbelievable, this is frightening, Ferit says, I don’t understand, you lost the bet, it’s over. Seyran makes a huge fake yawn and turns towards the stairs. She’s very sleepy. She waves goodnight to Suna and Abi—get some rest, good night. Ferit tells Seyro, I’ll make sure you have a good night. She stumbles, then elbows him in the jaw. She runs up the stairs.
Abi comments to Suna, they act like a real couple. Suna says, they’re funny. Ferit says, I heard that. You hear everything, Abi replies. Abi turns to Suna, let me wish you a good night. She stops him from going. I got you a new year’s gift. She takes a small box out of her purse. I couldn’t give it to you at the cabin because I didn’t want anyone to misunderstand. Abi’s face lights up. Thank you, should shouldn’t have. I’m embarrassed. It’s a red string bracelet. Suna says, I hope your dreams come true this year.
Ferit has changed for bed. He calls out to Seyran, did you lock yourself in the bathroom? She comes out. Why would I lock myself in? Here I am. You’re here now, he replies, but you were in there for about two hours. She says, I removed my makeup, brushed my teeth, brushed my hair. Ferit thinks for a second, then smiles, ah… I understand. You were getting ready. Of course, my thoughtful wife. Wait here, I’ll be right back. Seyran wonders what he meant.
Ferit takes a shower, brushes his teeth, gargles, sprays some cologne. He applauds himself, then fixes his hair… and his eyebrows! He leaves the bathroom and Seyran is already sleeping in the bed. Oh, my dear wife… He looks at the couch and sees the pillow and blanket… How funny. He approaches the bed. Seyro… are you asleep? Look, you hardly left me any space. He turns down the quilt and gets in bed. He slides his arm over her to cuddle.
Seyran startles and pushes him off—Ferit! Stop! What are you doing?! What did I do, he asks, I’m lying next to you. What happened? Didn’t you see the pillow and blanket on the sofa, she says, that’s where you will sleep.
Ferit says he thought it was a joke. The only joke is your presence in this bed, she replies. Go to the sofa! Come on, he says, we slept together in the cabin, and you held my hand at dinner. I did it in a friendly way, she explains, you know, because Seyran and Ferit are “friends” again. He proposes their couple name should be “Seyfer”. She thinks and then approves. [and so do millions of fans.]
Great, Ferit says, but I think it’s time to go a step further. I kissed you… then you came and kissed me… I think we need to move to the next stage in our relationship. Seyran replies, I suggest you be very careful about what you say, Feritciğim. She asks, what is the “next stage”? Whatever you want it to be, he answers, relax, we can stay at the same stage if that’s what you want.
#47 part 6
Ferit closes his eyes and puckers up waiting for her kiss. She tries not to laugh out loud. Then she gives him a little slap on the mouth. Seyran! He laughs. She laughs, look at your face! What was that, Ferit? You’re acting like a little boy. Is this the way for a grown man to behave? You make me act this way, he replies, canım karım benim… come on, let’s go to bed now. We won’t get any results from you tonight. Come.
Seyran is ticked. What do you mean? Am I a playing field? There is no keeping score, Ferit. He falls back in the bed and laughs. She imitates him. He says, Seyran, ya, I thought, "the girl has finally left Antep and become an Istanbul-ite." But no, you are the same, you never change. He keeps laughing and throws a pillow at her. She throws it back and says, you can have the bed. I’ll sleep on the sofa.
Ferit follows her to the sofa. Seyran! Come to bed. He tries to get her up. Come on, all I want is what I deserve. He pulls on her. She demands, let go! I won the bet, he says, and I want my prize. You lost, don’t deny it. What were you going to do if I won? Why did you even agree to it? Weren’t you going to kiss me for a very, very, long time?
Seyran kicks, but Ferit won’t let go of her leg. Go get some fresh air, take a cold shower, she complains, you’re acting like a child who didn’t get any sweets. He replies, please…let me show you my sweet side. She gives him a weird look. He bites her covered foot and asks, where’s my phone? How should I know, Seyran says. Let go of my foot!
Ferit drops her foot and gets up. You’re so annoying! But what else is new? He gets a sweater and puts on his sneakers. Seyran says, is that your solution? To go to your lover? Sorry… your ex-lover. Go. Run, run, run. He answers, you think I’d go see her like this? Ridiculous. She snarks, should we be surprised, ladies and gentlemen? Never.
Ferit tells her, my phone is in the car. I was just going to get it. He goes back to the sofa. And you, wow! Mashallah! You neither let me into your bed, nor do you kiss me, and yet you’re jealous! They grapple with the blanket. She swats him, he lightly swats back. She protests and struggles. He pulls the blanket off and she pulls it back. He leaves the room.
And we are out.
Thank you Babachita and Dondi for your support, and everyone for their prayers. My relative Saddaf, a citizen, has been able to chat by video with her husband Fareed (born in Pakistan). She is in Baltimore awaiting the birth of their baby in a month. He was arrested by ICE while they were walking to her Obgyn appointment. He has been transferred to an ICE detention center in Texas. She does have in-laws living near her to help her out.
